NEW YORK — Kanye West is nothing if not a showman, and on Tuesday, the rapper celebrated the release of his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, with a performance that was as daring and dashing as it was fraught with traces of the petulant MC of the past.

Shortly after midnight, West took to the stage at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan accompanied by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and femcee/singer Teyana Taylor.

The trio launched into "Dark Fantasy," the spirited opening number of 'Ye's new set.

Sporting a skin-tight dress, Taylor admirably belted out the chorus to the track and stuck around to ride shotgun with the G.O.O.D Music chief.

"New York City, make some noise," West told the gathering crowd after the opening selections. "Today, I'm gonna do My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."

From there, West breezed through "Gorgeous," "Power" and "All of the Lights," the latter of which was a rumbling effort.

Nicki Minaj joined Yeezy on stage for some album-release unity when the DJ spun "Monster," sans Jay-Z.

Rick Ross arrived onstage for the Bink-produced "Devil in a New Dress."

When West teased the first few chords of "Runaway," the crowd — which included Diddy, music executives Lyor Cohen and Sylvia Rhone, ?uestlove, comedian Aziz Ansari and Selita Ebanks — erupted with approval.

The dramatic rendition was easily the night's highlight and featured artist Pusha T looked possessed on the microphone. Meanwhile, West was like a mad scientist pounding away on his MPC machine, creating musical backdrops to match almost each song.

After over an hour of performing, Yeezy closed the proceedings with a stirring, slowed-down rendition of the song "Lost in the World," the song he's slated to perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.

He reappeared on stage shortly after for an encore and powered through brief versions of "Christian Dior Denim Flow" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

Although he finished with "Good Life," it may have been the defiance of "Can't Tell Me Nothing" that stuck with 'Ye after the performance, when he spoke to the crowd.

"As you know, it's been an extremely hard year for me," he began. "But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album ... I never thought I'd say this, I wanna thank the magazines for perfect scores across the board. I always felt like I could do anything.

"To do 100,000 digitally," Ye continued, remarking on his first day tally in sales from Monday. "And slated to do 600,000 the first week. I'm not here to do mother----ing politics. I'm here to make music. I'm not here to talk in no interviews; no one ask me any stupid f---ing questions."

Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

'I was pregnant with this DVD,' she laughs to MTV News as 'I Am ... World Tour' is set to air Thanksgiving Day on ABC.

Beyoncé never really seems to slow down, so when the time came to choose a director for her concert special DVD "I Am ... World Tour," the singer decided to take on those duties too. It's an accomplishment the singer jokes may have sparked those pregnancy rumors.

"I was pregnant with this DVD, yes!" she joked to MTV News.

The DVD hits stores on November 30, but fans can catch the 90-minute "I Am ... World Tour" TV special when it airs on ABC Thanksgiving night at 9:30 p.m. ET. Beyoncé opened up about what it was like to sit in the director's chair.

"Well, I've done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I'm so thrilled," she said at the New York City screening for the flick.

Beyoncé said she was completely hands-on, deciding which moments made the final cut and which ones wound up on the cutting-room floor. "It was hard work," she said. "I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it."

Her parents, Mathew and Tina Knowles, who also attended the screening over the weekend, said the film gives B the recognition she deserves after years of collaborating on many of her own videos.

"I'm really excited about this because Beyoncé has been making little short films and really helping to direct her videos," Tina told us. "So it's nice that she'll get credit for doing something that she really loves doing and that she's very talented at."

Dad Mathew recalled all of the effort his superstar daughter put into the special. "I'm so proud," he said. "I had an opportunity [to see the film], I've been to Houston with a screening; I've been to Bentonville, [Arkansas], with a screening, and to see the excitement from the audience, what an incredible job Beyoncé did as a director in the editing, I'm just so proud. Hopefully, all the fans go out and get the DVD and soundtrack and look at that ABC special coming on Thanksgiving."

Bruno Mars' 'Just The Way You Are' Gets The 'Glee' Treatment

'Furt' episode also features 'Marry You,' the fourth Mars song to be covered this season.

It's no surprise that one of 2010's biggest collaborators, Bruno Mars, has already teamed up with the folks at "Glee" three times this season. While last week's cover of "Forget You" (which skyrocketed to #1 on the iTunes charts after Gwyneth Paltrow's take on the tune) technically belongs to Cee Lo, Mars did partially write the wildly popular tongue-in-cheek track. And new kid Sam sang "Billionaire," Mars' collaboration with Travie McCoy, in the season premiere.

Now it's his solo work that's getting the "Glee" treatment. In this week's episode, "Furt," Finn (Cory Monteith) sang "Just the Way You Are," the first single from Mars' debut LP, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. And the "Glee" couples all chipped in on another one of his songs, "Marry You."

Before Gleeks were singing along with Mars' sweet lyrics, he's been making his mark on the industry for years.

The 25-year-old, who was born Peter Gene Hernandez and originally hails from Honolulu, has already written songs for some of the industry's hottest pop, rap and R&B acts. In fact, Adam Levine (of Maroon 5, who Bruno opened for during their most recent tour), Sean Kingston and Flo Rida (Bruno penned his monster hit, 2009's "Right Round") are just some of the artists who've sung along to his undeniably catchy hooks.

It was only a matter of time until Bruno moved from having a hand in some of the year's biggest hits to creating his own. While "Just the Way You Are" is a rather subdued song, it certainly made some noise on the charts. The song was released on July 19 and reached #1 by September 23 on the Billboard charts (and held onto the spot for three consecutive weeks).

The subsequent music video for the song, which features an adorable throwback to cassette tapes, was released in early September. His latest video, for "Grenade," just premiered on MTV last week.

In a year that saw him drop both an EP and an album, perform at the VMAs with Paramore's Hayley Williams and B.o.B and take the stage on "Saturday Night Live" (on the episode hosted by "Glee" star Jane Lynch), Mars also experienced a setback. He was arrested for possession of cocaine in Las Vegas on September 20.

The arrest clearly hasn't deterred most fans and critics. Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which was released on October 5, hit #3 on the Billboard 200 and sat atop the Digital Albums charts. The Boston Globe noted that Mars "clearly has his eyes on the charts." But he had a more poetic way of putting it when he spoke to MTV News.

"There's no way to describe the feeling of seeing your music being recognized. ... As an artist, that's what you hope for," he said. "I want the world to fall in love with my music, that's what I'm doing music for. I want to be able to do shows and have people come and see me do my thing."

Did the "Glee" kids do Bruno Mars' songs justice? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Andrew Garfield Is The Actor We're Most Thankful For In 2010

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 03:52 AM PST

His Oscar-worthy turn in 'The Social Network,' 'Spider-Man' casting and overall humility have endeared the young actor to MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian

He plastered an all-too-human face on the backstabby founding of Facebook in "The Social Network" and just might win an Oscar for his troubles. He healed our broken geeky hearts when he assumed the role of Peter Parker after the "Spider-Man" franchise collapsed unexpectedly in January. And let's not forget his powerful performance as a cloned human desperate to prove he has in a soul in the underrated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel "Never Let Me Go."

For all of these reasons — as well as for being such a damn nice fellow — Andrew Garfield is the man MTV News is most thankful for in 2010.

Just don't tell that to him. Humble as ever despite talk of awards-season love and the prospect of taking on one of pop culture's most beloved superheroes, Garfield has trouble accepting the fact that he's deserving of all the hype. A conversation with him veers through talk of insecurities, I-better-not-screw-this-up fears and the self-consciously naive hope that his life isn't about to change forever.

He is, in other words, an utterly charming guy, and we can't wait to see what he brings to the screen in 2011.

MTV: So every year, we look back at the film folks we're truly thankful for, and this year, you're the man we're most thankful for. Congrats!

Andrew Garfield: Wow, that's stupid. That's very, very silly. I guess if I make you feel better about yourselves, that makes sense.

MTV: We're very insecure.

Garfield: No, I'm very insecure! I'm incredibly insecure. That's crazy, but it's very flattering.

MTV: Do you have a speech prepared for the occasion?

Garfield: Yes, I would like to, first and foremost, thank you for inflating my ego. I really only want to thank you.

MTV: It's been quite a year for you, with "Never Let Me Go" and then "Social Network" and then you obviously landed "Spider-Man." Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you?

Garfield: I feel incredibly lucky that I've had the good fortune to work with people and on projects I care about. From "Never Let Me Go" to "I'm Here," a short film I did with Spike Jonze, to the David Fincher thing, "The Social Network," with all the casts and crews — I don't take that lightly. It's inspiring, and you feed off it. In that way, I'm incredibly happy. And moving on to the next job I'm going to be shooting, being given that responsibility, I see it as a real gift. It's a character — I'm talking about the Spider-person — I've known for my whole life. He's been a presence in my upbringing and a very symbolic figure and force of manhood and bravery and a moral compass. All of those things that have shaped me as a person, he's been very much involved in.

MTV: It seems like maybe you were fairly well known in the U.K., but until recently, not many people in the U.S. knew who you were. How has your day-to-day life changed, if at all?

Garfield: It hasn't changed yet. I say "yet" as if that will happen. Maybe naively, I think my life is going to stay the same in terms of anonymity. I feel it's so important to have a normal life, to be able to walk down a city street and have a normal human experience in order to reflect that in the work. Otherwise, you can't relate. It's so funny how actors are perceived. It's craziness. Even the way I got when I met Doc Brown the other day. What's his name?

MTV: Christopher Lloyd from "Back to the Future"?

Garfield: Yeah, I met Christopher Lloyd. I lost my mind. I turned into a schoolgirl. I started screaming in his face. I went insane. But I guess because his performances had such a profound effect on me, it was like meeting a hero. I personally haven't been on the receiving end of that, thankfully.

MTV: Well, people aren't probably walking around shouting at you, "Hey, Eduardo," your character from "Social Network," but you'll probably be getting a lot of, "Hey, Peter Parker!"

Garfield: Unless they let me play Peter Parker with a disguise so no one sees my face. I'll play him with a beard and mustache.

MTV: Maybe a little "Benjamin Button"-style CGI facial work ...

Garfield: Yeah, they could face-replace me, and then it'll just be my body. People will recognize some other, better actor's face.

MTV: You should bring that up with Sony.

Garfield: You think they'll like it?

MTV: Totally. ... I mean, not a chance. Anyway, has there been a surreal moment from 2010 that kind of encapsulates what a crazy year it's been for you?

Garfield: I did have a strange moment when I was told I was going to play this role. I was like, "Oh, wow, this is something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid." There was a moment of total boyish excitement. It was this cosmic convergence where I was in the past, present and future all at once. In the future, I was thinking about my nephews that are going to have an uncle who's Spider-Man, but then I thought that could be bad because kids can bully you for any reason, and it's like, "Where's your uncle now when I'm beating the sh-- out of you?" I'll have to go to their school a lot, but by that time I'll be really old and fat and no one will believe I was Spider-Man. Then I was thinking about the past and when I was first shown a "Spider-Man" comic. It inspired me because I was one of those people who felt stronger on the inside than they looked on the outside. And then in the present moment, I was thinking this moment is something I'll never forget.

Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it's about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long.

Lil Twist Finishing Debut Album After 'Emotional' Lil Wayne Homecoming

'We did it big, and he was just happy to be home,' Young Money MC tells MTV News of his close friend and mentor.

The "Free Weezy" campaign officially ended following Lil Wayne's release from Rikers Island after serving an eight-month sentence, and the streamers and balloons from the "Welcome Home Weezy" parties have been taken down. Now, the Young Money captain and his stable of artists can focus on resuming their recording careers.

Earlier this year, Drake released the now-platinum Thank Me Later album only to be followed by labelmate Nicki Minaj with her debut album, Pink Friday, which is also expected to turn out big numbers on next week's Billboard charts. In the coming months, the home that Weezy and Birdman built will show no signs of slowing down with more debut efforts slated to drop in 2011 from Tyga, Lil Chuckee, Shanell and Lil Twist.

Twist didn't sit still while Wayne was away, staying busy recording a litany of material, some of which could see the light of day on his upcoming mixtape project with pop phenomenon Justin Bieber.

"Me and Justin are working on this mixtape," Twist told MTV News. "We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done."

This past weekend, while walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards, Bieber also confirmed that the pair were working on something together. "Lil Twist is my homey, and we're working on stuff for fun," the teenybopper told MTV News.

Twist recently returned to his Atlanta home following some much-needed time with Wayne, his close friend and mentor. According to Twist, the reunion was memorable and emotional.

"My big brother just got home, Weezy F. Baby," Twist told MTV News from Atlanta. "We did it real big in Miami as soon as he touched down. I actually missed the show he did with Drake in Vegas, but as soon as he did, we partied like crazy. It was a very emotional and fun moment, man, because everybody was there, the whole Cash Money label and Young Money was there. We did it big, and he was just happy to be home, and it felt good."

Now that Weezy is home, it's back to business. "Right now, I am working on my debut album, Don't Get it Twisted," Twist said. "I actually went back into the album, I was done with it, and I went to Birdman with it, and he loved the album. But I wanted to go back in and get a few more songs by myself. I got a lot of collaborations on the album, so that's what I'm doing right now."

Dane Cook Sizes Up New-Release Rivals Kanye West, Justin Bieber, More

Comedian drops I Did My Best - Greatest Hits the same week as new albums from Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha and a load of other megastars.

With all the hype surrounding MTV News' musical Mega-Release Week — Bieber! Kanye! Nicki! Ke$ha! Jay-Z! MCR! — you might not be aware of yet another album hitting stores this week: Dane Cook's I Did My Best - Greatest Hits.

Lucky for us, the man behind the album stopped by our office to discuss his just-released comedic stylings, as well as his thoughts on the other big albums dropping this week. So why release a greatest-hits album?

"I've been doing stand-up comedy 20 years altogether — ten years of recording tracks and club sets and arena sets," Cook explained. "So I thought it would be a great way to close out the decade, a great 'thank you' to fans to say, 'These are the high-water marks that we shared,' remaster it, make it sound great. To new fans that are always discovering me saying, 'Where do I start?,' this is really the collection of what I think are the highlight moments," he said.

And for the die-hard fans out there who already have some of those greatest hits, he included a bunch of unreleased tracks on the album as well. "There's something for everyone on there," he assured us.

Regarding his competition in the new-releases category, we asked Cook to share his thoughts on some of the big names. First up, Kanye West. "Never heard of him. What is he about?" Cook deadpanned. "Kan-J? Kanye? I'm just going to call him West. That's great. I'll definitely look him up."

With Nicki Minaj, Cook pretended that we were asking about something suggestive — "Oh, no, I'm thinking of a ménage a trois that I once had" — but then praised the talents of that "guy or girl."

What about Ke$ha and Justin Bieber? "Ke$ha is like mini-Gaga," Cook said. "I think whatever outfits Gaga doesn't end up using, she probably just gets those and spins them into hits.

"Justin Bieber is, first of all, he's adorable," he said, sincerely. "That Bieber hair that caught on for a little bit, and he enchants the little girls. That 2- to 5-year-old demographic I think is really where he's at. And he's going to have a really long career, or until they turn 8 or 9," he quipped. "As long as they stay 2 to 5, I think that kid's going to be around for a long time."

'Burlesque' Is About The 'Tease,' Cher Says

Plus: We badger co-star Stanley Tucci about why he doesn't get a song-and-dance number in the film.

After weeks of seeing those titillating "Burlesque" billboards and TV spots, the movie is finally here! For those looking for something fun to see this holiday weekend — specifically a musical with a little sugar and spice, plus Cher, Christina Aguilera and a lot of eye candy — then this is the movie for you.

And despite the stars' admissions to a few unsexy moments during production, it's safe to say that the majority of the film is sexy, sassy fun. But don't take our word for it; take Cher's. When we caught up with the legendary star recently and sly, quick-witted co-star Stanley Tucci, they gave us a rundown on what sexy is all about: chest hair.

To better set up this scenario, it should be noted that when MTV News walked into the interview room, Cher and Tucci were involved in a playful exchange about whether Tucci should button more buttons on his shirt.

"I can see the little 'I think I'm sexy,' because you've got the button happening," Cher told Tucci about his chest hair peeking out of his shirt.

"Oh, the button, yeah. Oh, I can't [button it up]. That would be sad," he quipped.

"Also, the hair is pushing the shirt away, so you've got to let it out," Cher shot back.

"That's right," Tucci said, opening his collar wider. "That's right, baby."

"It's gotta be free, it's gotta run wild," Cher added.

With a break in the friendly banter, we told Tucci that with all the song-and-dance action in the film, we were disappointed that his character doesn't have his own number.

"No, believe me, you're not," he said, which made Cher laugh out loud.

"Everybody keeps asking that question!" she exclaimed.

"If there had been, there would have been real disappointment," Tucci insisted.

Surely with all the downtime on set, he picked up a few things, like some dance moves.

"I did, but I got shots for those," he joked. "No, I'm not a singer, I'm not a singer."

Very well. We then turned the conversation back to the subject at hand — "Burlesque" — and Cher's take on what makes the film's style of dance sexy without being all about sex.

"Burlesque itself is more about tease," Cher said. "It's more about what you think is going to happen, not necessarily what's happening. It's kind of fun."

Check out everything we've got on "Burlesque."

Naya Rivera Wanted To 'Be Like Paris Hilton,' On 'When I Was 17'

'Glee' star recalls getting her dad to spring for an expensive Hilton-inspired dog on episode premiering Saturday at 11 a.m.

When "Glee" star Naya Rivera was a teen she didn't just look up to one of the most popular girls in her high school, she admired one of the most popular girls in the world: Paris Hilton.

"All I wanted to do was be like Paris Hilton," she says in the latest episode of "When I Was 17," which also features stories from Taye Diggs and Carmelo Anthony. Rivera, who was 17 in 2004, had a major Hilton obsession when she was a teen.

"Everything that Paris did, Naya was all about it," her friend Alyson said.

Any good Hilton fan in the mid-aughties had to have an appropriately small pooch to tote around. So Rivera persuaded her father to buy her a socialite-approved pup.

"That's when I bought a little dog like Paris. So I convinced my dad to get me a Maltese," she says. "I called around, like, to a million breeders. Oddly enough, this lady that I found was like, 'Oh, yeah, I just sold Paris Hilton a dog.' And I was like, 'Yahtzee! I want my dog from there.' "

However, it turns out that cute, clutch-sized canines don't come cheap and getting one from the same breeder as Hilton came with a hefty price tag.

"The dog was, like, $1,500, so we had a payment plan for this dog. We literally made monthly payments on the dog," she recalls. "Her name is Cali. I took it everywhere with me."

After a while, though, carrying around an adorable dog, even one that Hilton may have dubbed "hot," got old.

"It was cool for like three months then it crapped in my car," Rivera concedes.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Naya Rivera, Camelo Anthony and Taye Diggs — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

Kanye West, Justin Bieber Join Tradition Of Mega-Release Weeks

This isn't the first time labels have loaded the shelves with new releases all at once.
By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker

The sheer volume of mainstream albums dropping this week makes our head spin like that ancient artifact, the vinyl record. Monday saw the release of Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Ke$ha's Cannibal, Jay-Z's The Hits Collection Vol. 1, Lloyd Banks' Hunger for More 2 and My Chemical Romance's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. And Friday is the big day for Justin Bieber's My Worlds Acoustic.

Many may wonder why the bigwigs of the music industry would put out such a gargantuan selection all at once. But there's a precedent for this kind of strategy. In fact, music lovers have been through this very same overload dilemma a handful of times over the last decade. Here's a look back at some of them:

September 11, 2001 became a national tragedy, though it was supposed to be a huge day for the music business. Mariah Carey's "Glitter" soundtrack, Jay-Z's Blueprint, Bob Dylan's Love and Theft, Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs, Nickelback's Silver Side Up and P.O.D.'s Satellite were among the many albums that were released at the beginning of the week.

November 18, 2003 marked the start to one of the year's biggest music release weeks. The range of albums seemed to hit every demographic imaginable. Releases included Britney Spears' In the Zone, Blink-182's self-titled fifth studio album, Timbaland & Magoo's Under Construction, Part II, Christmas albums from Whitey Houston and Ashanti, compilations from Michael Jackson, Moby and Joe Satriani, and live albums/DVDs from Dave Matthews Band and Linkin Park.

Following the pattern of Thanksgiving week album releases, November 22, 2004 began another big week. Two "American Idol" winners, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard went head-to-head with Free Yourself and I Need an Angel, respectively. The shelves were also packed with U2's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Gwen Stefani's solo debut Love. Angel. Music. Baby., as well as other releases from Creed, Anthrax, Evanescence, Nirvana and Jessica Simpson.

September 12, 2006 was the drop date of Justin Timberlake's second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which produced five smash hit singles. That week John Mayer's Continuum and Bob Seger's Face the Promise were released, and both eventually went platinum. Other albums and compilations came from the Mars Volta, Papa Roach, Lionel Richie, Veruca Salt, Everclear, and the Barenaked Ladies.

On September 11, 2007 after threatening to retire from music if his album Curtis was outsold, 50 Cent came in second to Kanye West's Graduation. And though he wasn't included in the 50 Cent Challenge, Kenny Chesney's Just Who I Am: Pirates and Poets was released the same day and sold very well. The date also marked the release of Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, which didn't exactly pose a threat.

One of the wildest weeks of 2009's album drop calendar was easily that of November 16. Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, Justin Bieber's My World, Leona Lewis' Echo, OneRepublic's Waking Up, Kris Allen's self-titled debut, Norah Jones' The Fall, and compilations from both Janet Jackson and Fall Out Boy were some of the new additions to the music scene.

Which new albums are you buying this week? Talk about it in the comments!

'Dancing With The Stars' Finale: Jennifer Grey Bests Bristol Palin

Is it safe to say that Jennifer Grey had the time of her life during this season of "Dancing With the Stars"? Considering that she took home the top prize during Tuesday night's (November 23) finale, that's a resounding yes.

Before the winner was announced, past contestants from this season were invited back to settle scores and dance one last go-round. One dance highlight of the night was Rick Fox versus Kirk Warner — and the two played up their basketball and football backgrounds.

Then the three finalists — Bristol Palin, Kyle Massey and Grey — came back to dance one last time before the big reveal.

The moment that everyone has been waiting for came: The tension was thick, as viewers waited to find out whether Palin would nab a controversial win. Turns out, there was no need for all the controversy.

Palin landed in third place but received a standing ovation from the crowd. "I have so many good memories in this competition," Palin said. "It's been a life-changing experience."

Palin smiled as she and her partner Mark Ballas watched a montage of their special moments throughout the season.

Once Palin was eliminated, Grey and her partner Derek Hough being named the champions seemed like a foregone conclusion. The announcement was the first non-surprise of the season, considering that the actress had consistently been a front-runner in the dance competition. Grey, who had a flawless finale performance the night before, fought back tears while nodding in agreement when co-host Tom Bergeron mentioned that she didn't think she'd be able to actually perform at the finale, given that she had a few injuries that were bothering her.

Grey paraded and danced with the trophy before she and Hough were lifted in the air by their fellow contestants.

Are you happy with the outcome? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Gerard Way says new album Danger Days is an 'allegory for the music industry.'
By James Montgomery

Much has been made about the path My Chemical Romance took in making Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, a two-year odyssey that saw them record an entire album, scrap it and part ways with drummer Bob Bryar.

But for all the drama that went into Danger Days, MCR frontman Gerard Way can trace the entire album's genesis back to one single moment: the making of their "Desolation Row" video, which they shot for Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" film in late 2008.

"In a weird way, yeah, 'Watchmen' was [the beginning]. ... It's kind of funny, because [we] had a weird experience with making that video. There's always early signs," Way told MTV News on Monday. "I remember somebody in that audience when we were shooting that video saying, 'Wow, is your new stuff going to sound like this? Because I've never been into you guys, but if it sounds like this, I'm into it.' And I remember kind of thinking — and I should've really paid attention to the signs — like, 'Well, I'm not doing this for you to all of a sudden like us, 'cause we're kind of playing tough.'

"Like, to me, that would be the ultimate pandering," he continued. "And I kind of feel like the first attempt at the record, in a strange way, was that. It was like saying, 'Oh, we can be a straight rock band; we're not going to irritate you with the way you look anymore, or what we're saying. We're not going to challenge any ideas, we're just going to be so straight ... and do what we do great — write great songs — but we're going to do that so much that we're no longer a threat. And once we're no longer a threat, maybe there will be less noise, maybe there will be less opposition.' So Danger Days was a fight against those feelings."

And so, Way got busy creating an entire world, retrofitting the "Killjoys" comic book he had been working on as MCR's newest, most purposeful effort to date. To him, Danger Days isn't a concept record like Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge or The Black Parade. It's something deeper, bigger and more important: it's a rallying cry.

"It's not a concept record with a story. It's just a complete allegory. Even the existence of Battery City and these Zones outside of it — they're very dangerous to live in — Battery City is very safe and clean, and you're living outside of it just to be free," he explained. "It's a complete allegory for the music industry, for the state of music. Rock kind of has to get its legs back and take back a lot of real estate, and I think that's what Danger Days is trying to do."

'Glee' Bully May Never Come Out, Max Adler Says

'High school, that's kind of your world and Karofsky's fear is for people to find out who he is,' he speculates to MTV News.

McKinley High's resident bully Dave Karofsky is causing a whole lot of trouble on "Glee." Tuesday night's (November 23) episode was especially painful to watch, what with his creepy klepto move with Kurt's wedding-cake topper and that unbridled violence. It's enough to make us wonder: What the heck is going to happen to him?

Max Adler, the actor behind Karofsky, recently told MTV News he has some ideas about what might become of his character.

"He could join New Directions, he could be a glee-clubber," Adler offered. "Of course ... he will maybe think about suicide," he added. "Just because that's going on in the nation right now, but I don't know if they're going to touch on that and go that deep.

"I don't know if there is any redemption [for Karofsky]," Adler continued. "I don't know if he's ever going to come out. In high school, that's kind of your world and Karofsky's fear is for people to find out who he is."

The "Glee" star emphasized that as far as his character's arc is concerned, he really doesn't know what's in store but he's glad to be making an impact onscreen.

"I'm really just so thrilled to be able to play this part, and at this point in time in our nation and the world, even. I feel like I'm representing such a large group of people and it's a crucial time. I don't know where it's going to go. I want it to be a great message," Adler said. "I think I want him to have redemption and to eventually realize that people are tolerant and not prejudiced and there's no ignorance and that he can come out and feel safe. I think that would be a great message," he said hopefully. "But it depends where [creator] Ryan Murphy and all of them want to take him."

Where do you hope the "Glee" story line will take Karofsky? Tell us in the comments!

Christina Aguilera And Cam Gigandet Talk Sexy 'Burlesque' Wardrobe

Fresh off Christina Aguilera's saucy song-and-dance number at the American Music Awards on Sunday, many are sweating out the release of her new film, "Burlesque," which hits theaters Wednesday.

"Burlesque" follows a small-town girl (Aguilera) who journeys to the city looking for her big break but instead finds herself in the sensual world of burlesque. Aguilera makes her feature debut alongside the legendary Cher and a beautiful and talented supporting cast that includes Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough and Eric Dane.

We recently caught up with the stars of the film, who giggled as they recalled their unique wardrobe racks for the suggestive-yet-sweet musical.

Gigandet joked that, unlike the women in the film who were clad in elaborate bustiers and stockings, his wardrobe included "cookie boxes and pajamas." (In one very memorable scene, Gigandet parades around with nothing but a Famous Amos box covering his nether regions.) Aguilera lamented that he got off easy: "You didn't have to do any push-up bras, any high heels, any fishnet stockings."

Aguilera did reveal a few makeup secrets, however, and reported that Gigandet donned eyeliner for his part as Jack, the love interest to Aguilera's Ali. Gigandet took it all in stride. "It was fun to be something different," he said. "Yes, it was. I gotta say, it made my job easier to kind of, you know, step into a different character, into a different world."

On a side note, Gigandet also commented on how the legion of fans from his stint in the "Twilight" series has followed him, as compared to other roles — particularly as martial-arts champion Ryan McCarthy in 2008's "Never Back Down."

"It varies, where I am," he said, regarding whether he's still bombarded by Twilighters wherever he goes. "I mean, you know, when I was in New Orleans and Louisiana a few months ago, it was 'Never Back Down' that caught everyone's attention. I know, I love it. But there's 'Twilight' fans all over the world."

Aguilera noted that, once "Burlesque" hits theaters, it will be Gigandet's character Jack who will get all the buzz from fans. "Of course," Gigandet laughed. "Then I'll be 'Famous Amos cookies' for the rest of my life."

Black Eyed Peas Plan Stadium-Heavy 2011 Tour

Group may hit the road 'after February,' will.i.am tells Billboard.

The Black Eyed Peas are planning to rock as many bodies as possible when they hit the road next year, so they're hoping to pack their trek into massive venues around the world.

Peas frontman will.i.am told Billboard that the foursome's recent South American gigs will be the blueprint for filling the seats in stadiums across the globe.

"South America was a test," he said. "We did all our homework ... to try to figure out how we can do stadiums in other countries, in America, in Europe. If Black Eyed Peas can do five O2 arenas, why don't we just do it in one shot? If we can do three Staples Centers, we should do one Dodgers Stadium. So that's how we'll probably tour this time around."

"The Time (Dirty Bit)" MC said rocking to the collective's pop smashes with thousands of other revelers is the best way to experience the Peas live.

"It's like you're there with all your friends. You're there in front of 50,000 people and they're there to watch you and your friends," he said. "Nothing gets any better than that. It's the best feeling, the best one yet."

The band is expected to get in some practice hitting the stage for a major crowd at the top of next year. Sources have revealed that the Peas will helm halftime-show festivities at the Super Bowl, which often draws over 100 million viewers. Will's comment that the hitmaking quartet won't launch their global stadium takeover until "after February," the same month the Super Bowl airs, is perhaps a hint that the Peas will be throwing down at the football-fest.

The Peas' sixth record, The Beginning, is slated to be released November 30.

NEW YORKNicki Minaj took New York City by storm Tuesday (November 23) while promoting her debut album, Pink Friday. Her first stop was the Times Square MAC Cosmetics store, where she talked about her special edition Pink Friday MAC lipstick. Her fans — known as Barbiez — eagerly awaited her appearance.

Jasmine Taylor, 23, was "super excited" to see Nicki. "She is my idol. I live for her. I'm, like, shaking right now," said Jasmine, who sported a Nicki Minaj haircut and a glittering "Barbie" necklace. "She keeps it real and is so personable. The guys give her respect because of her lyrics."

Kelly Baker, a student at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, wasn't dressed like Nicki, but she was just as big a fan. What draws Kelly to Nicki is how she is not like any other artist. "She is really different and the only person who I can think of that is like her is — I don't know. I think she is so different and inventive."

Eric Cruz, 23, loves her so much that he wanted her to sign his neck so he could get it tattooed on him permanently.

All her fans came armed with the new Pink Friday album, hoping to get their copy signed. Tishae Lauren from the Bronx had to go to three different stores until she finally found a few lingering copies at Walmart — which she promptly bought up.

All the Barbiez in the crowd thought Nicki would outsell Kanye West and My Chemical Romance, who also dropped new albums Monday.

"I think Pink Friday will do good because everybody loves Nicki. She's the sh--," Anthony Pecheco insisted.

Her fans are also excited about her upcoming documentary, "My Time Now," which premieres Sunday, November 28, on MTV. "I'm excited because we always see her as a cartoon character," Tishae said. "Finally, we get to see her more serious side."

Nicki also drew one fan all the way from Rome. Mario Petroccione came to New York just to see his favorite female MC. "She's huge, and I love her," he said. "She never comes to Italy, so that's why I come to New York to see her." When asked what it was about Nicki that got him to fly all the way from Rome, Mario replied, "She's just lovely."

'I got kicked [and] hit on the head, but it never felt so good,' gushed one fan at MCR's Danger Days release party.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CaliforniaMy Chemical Romance threw a party on Monday night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip to celebrate the release of their brand new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, and the members of the MCRmy showed up in their Killjoy finest.

Both inside and out, the House of Blues was transformed into a DayGlo diaspora, part postapocalyptic fashion spectacle, part bizarre performance-art piece, as My Chem fans donned neon masks, brightly colored bandanas and a variety of blinking accessories (glasses, necklaces, bracelets, etc.), all in the name of Danger Days. They strolled through the "Zone 5 Carnival," scarfed down cotton candy, avoided the menacing Draculoids that patrolled the grounds and — perhaps most importantly — witnessed one heck of a concert.

"It was amazing. They're my favorite band, so I was just completely stoked the whole time," 17-year-old MCR fan Ryan Johnson said. "There was a lot of moshing going on, and it was kind of crazy. The energy was amazing."

And that energy was matched only by some MCR followers' dedication ... they came from miles around (and a half a world away) to be here on this night, to be with their fellow fanatics and say they were there on the night their favorite band released its most ambitious album to date.

"It was one of the most amazing concerts of my life ... the utter energy that MCR puts out to the fans and the love all of us have for them, we all come together and it's like one big family having an amazing get-together," 15-year-old Matt Jennette said. "I came all the way here from Chicago because this is the album-release party and I love them with an unholy dedication. I had to see 'em. I paid like $200 for the tickets and it was worth it without a shadow of a doubt."

"I came from Italy, just because I love them more than my life. Their music makes me feel happy," Stefania Fiorese, 24, added. "We were in the first row and it was amazing. I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Paris, and it was so good, but this one was better. The crowd was pushing so hard — everyone was jumping, everyone was trying to reach them. Tomorrow I will be purple all over my body but I don't care."

That sentiment was echoed by pretty much every MCR fan who MTV News spoke to on Monday, many of whom limped out of the House of Blues a little battered, but completely, totally, blissed out of their minds.

"They never cease to amaze me, they're always great shows," John Conaty, 20, beamed. "I got kicked, crowd surfed on, got hit on the head numerous times, but it never felt so good. At every My Chemical Romance show, getting crushed feels the best."

"I got kicked in the face! I didn't even see it coming!" 16-year-old Savannah Hill laughed. "There was a crowd surfer and then they just came out of nowhere and whammed me in the face, but then I continued to watch the show. It was awesome."

Mark Wahlberg Gives Thanks For 'The Fighter,' 'The Other Guys' In 2010

He's also thankful for 'Boardwalk Empire' — and we're thankful for him.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Next up on our short list of people for whom we're most thankful this year: Mark Wahlberg. Certain generations will always remember him as Marky Mark from his days of "Good Vibrations" and Calvin Klein underwear ads. But in the last decade, Wahlberg has emerged as one of the industry's most savvy and bankable players.

In 2010, we were introduced to a new side of Wahlberg — his comedic timing — which he showcased by way of "Date Night," "The Other Guys" and MTV's own "The Knife Show." Behind the screen, Wahlberg teamed up with heavyweights Martin Scorsese and Terrence Winter ("The Sopranos") to bring "Boardwalk Empire" to HBO. He also produced and stars in "The Fighter." The man has been busy, and we're happy about it.

MTV: You're one of the people we're most thankful for. Has this year been particularly better than others?

Mark Wahlberg: It has. Every year above ground was a special year. Professionally, things couldn't be better. Personally, my kids are healthy — aside from my youngest having a double ear infection. My wife is healthy and happy and everything is good, so really I'm so blessed and so fortunate.

We've had a chance to talk and play around, but I'm not one of these guys who feels, like, entitled to be in this position. I feel so grateful and so humble. I've obviously worked very hard, it's been an amazing journey, but if it ended today, I would be happy because I was on the ride.

MTV: Is there a highlight from this year?

Wahlberg: I would have to say between the movie stuff and the television stuff — with "Boardwalk Empire" premiering, "The Other Guys" did so well. Getting to go do a comedy at the beginning of this year with Seth McFarlane, his directorial debut. I'm so excited, it's off-the-charts funny.

MTV: Tell me about "Teddy Bear," because it sounds absurd and amazing at the same time.

Wahlberg: I don't know how much he wants me to tell, but it's about this kid who gets a bear for Christmas, it's in the '70s, it's one of those Teddy Ruxpin-ish bears where you squeeze it and it says, "I love you!" The kid wishes and dreams that the bear would come alive, and a Christmas wish must be granted and it does. And Seth McFarlane is voicing the bear, but the bear is going to look like a little teddy bear, but it's motion-capture, like "Avatar." It's never been done before. It's insane. What the bear does is just ...

MTV: An R-rated comedy? I assume when Seth McFarlane is involved ...

Wahlberg: Yeah. The bear becomes famous, and then that's my ticket to getting things and living a life of privilege.

MTV: How satisfying was it for you to finally make "The Fighter"?

Wahlberg: Just to be able to get the movie made was such an uphill battle. I was so happy we got it made, and then the fact that we were able to make a great movie and, I think, the best possible version of the movie. There were so many times where I thought I would make the movie just to get it done, but it happened for the right reasons.

MTV: Do you have plans to direct?

Wahlberg: I want to direct, but I don't want to direct myself in a movie, because then it becomes about directing my performance. I don't have the ability to be that kind of multitasker. Producing was tough enough. But in the future, I'd like to take a crack at it.

MTV: What's next? You've talked about "Cocaine Cowboys."

Wahlberg: Yeah, probably right now. And then there's this other thing, "Broken City," that I want to do at the end of next year with Allen Hughes directing, which is on the Black List. [Editor's note: The Black List is a compendium of unproduced screenplays that different studios/readers have given high marks to.] It's one of the best unproduced screenplays, an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talent. ... Hopefully "Fighter" will make it a little easier to get some of these passion projects off the ground.

MTV: What kind of film is "Broken City"?

Wahlberg: Crime, mystery. It's in the vein of those old classics, "Chinatown," even "L.A. Confidential."

Check out everything we've got on "The Fighter."

Dr. Dre Is 'Constantly Working,' Producer Alex Da Kid Says

'Love the Way You Lie' producer tells MTV News he met Dre through his sessions with Eminem.

After years of working on his long-awaited album Detox, Dr. Dre is the epitome of a perfectionist. In addition to some rumored collaborations, the super-producer, who is set to drop the LP early next year, has been logging studio sessions with the industry's newest hitmaker, Alex Da Kid.

When MTV News caught up with the British producer at the American Music Awards on Sunday, he revealed that the duo were introduced through Eminem, who worked with Kid on the Rihanna-assisted "Love the Way You Lie."

When asked about Dre's forthcoming project, the producer remained tight-lipped, joking, "I'm not allowed to say too much because I will get shot and killed. They have snipers on the rooftop as we speak."

Despite working with Em, Rihanna and other music staples, Kid admitted that the biggest challenge when working with the West Coast icon was overcoming his "fear of getting in the studio with such a perfectionist."

Once the duo met, Kid said his anxiety melted away. "He's been working at this for 11 years, but once you get over that, he's like the nicest guy ever. I can't describe how nice he is," he said, adding, "He just makes you feel comfortable and easy."

As a newcomer within the industry, the 27-year-old music mind said Dre's secret to success boils down to his work ethic. "I think, basically, he works harder than everybody I know," he said. "He's constantly just working. I think that's what it takes to be successful in anything, not just producing."

Detox may not be out until early next year, but fans have already gotten a taste of Dre's Alex Da Kid-produced material, including "I Need a Doctor." The track, which features Eminem, hit the Internet last Wednesday. The collabo coincidentally finds Slim Shady giving Dre a musical reality check about his perfectionist goals.

Who else do you hope Dr. Dre will collaborate with on Detox? Tell us in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Calls 'Roman's Revenge' With Eminem Her 'Coming-Out Record'

MC plays coy when asked by Power 105's DJ Clue who the blistering Pink Friday track is aimed at.

When Nicki Minaj was wrapping up Pink Friday, there was one last song she needed to finish: a track Swizz Beatz had sent her way that she was having trouble finishing. But after securing Eminem for what would become "Roman's Revenge," she was able to breathe easy.

"That was my coming-out record," she told Power 105 radio host DJ Clue in an interview airing later Tuesday night (November 23).

All the pressure of putting together her album was in the past by the time she recorded "Roman's Revenge," Minaj said, so she was free.

She secured Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna and more A-listers for the project, but the Queens lyricist more than held her own. On the blistering track, she delivers jaw-dropping lines that many have translated as an attack against Lil' Kim. But the femcee has downplayed the tension between the two, letting the track speak for itself.

When Clue pressed her about the reason for the rift during the interview, Minaj said she has moved beyond any lingering issues the two may have had. "I don't even want to discuss it anymore," she said. "That's water under the bridge. I don't think about it, only when people bring it up."

Nicki was a little more aggressive when asked about Kim in an interview Monday with New York's Hot 97. "When you see Gaga, you see Madonna — but Madonna never hated on Gaga," Nicki said. "Why in the black community we gotta hate on each other instead of saying, 'Thank you for showing me love, thank you for keeping my name alive'? The same way she opened doors for me, I'm opening doors for her. Nobody was playin' your music and you damn sure couldn't get an interview to save your life. You getting interviews, and every time you do interviews they're asking you about Nicki Minaj. So it's like we help each other. That's the point, we're helping each other. But if you are bitter, get a life."
