Rihanna Was 'Shocked' Eminem Wanted To Work With Her

'What? Eminem wants to do a song with a pop artist? With me?' singer recalls thinking when offered 'Love the Way You Lie.'

It's less than two weeks until Rihanna releases Loud, which will feature Eminem on the sequel to their smash "Love the Way You Lie." But when Rihanna initially found out that Em wanted to feature her on his Recovery album, she was "shocked."

"That's the first thing I thought. I was like, 'What? Eminem wants to do a song with a pop artist? With me?' 'Cause, you know, he always raps and talks sh-- about pop artists and pop female artists," she told MTV News. "So it was more of a shock to me than anything, and then that was the first thought. The second thought was, 'Of course I'll do a song with Eminem.' That's just something that doesn't come around every day. And then thirdly, I heard the song, and I just loved it."

She might have loved it from the second she heard it, "but I didn't know how intense the song would be to people," she continued. "I didn't know. I didn't expect them to connect with that song the way they did. It was incredible to see."

Rihanna said her fans' passion for the song made her have even a stronger connection to it. "They got really emotional, and you automatically connect, because now you both have in common [something] that you wouldn't have been able to know if you didn't have this song to bridge that," she said. "This song, it gave a voice to victims, but what I really enjoy about this song is not only how cleverly written it is ... but the fact that [Eminem] confronts himself on this record is the biggest thing for me."

Justin Bieber Says 3-D Movie Is 'Really Inspiring'

'You just got to remember that the sky's the limit,' he tells MTV News of 'Never Say Never.'

With fans going crazy over the trailer for Justin Bieber's 3-D movie, it seems that he wants them to know one thing about the February release: It's meant to inspire them to do whatever it is they've always dreamed of. Good thing it's called "Never Say Never."

"I want to let people know there's a lot of people that are discouraging in life and that will tell you you can't do something, but you just got to remember that the sky's the limit," he told MTV News at an L.A.-area book signing over the weekend. "You're able to do whatever you set your mind to as long as you remember to keep God first and stay grounded. So I think the movie really explains that, and it's really inspiring."

The flick's director, Jon Chu, echoed that sentiment when he spoke with MTV News last month." "It's really an interesting sort of pass between his real life to his music, so I think in the trailer, we break it down every step of the way in his life. Everyone said, 'It's not possible,' " Chu said. "Every step, everyone's always said, 'No, no, no, no.' And he's always said, 'Yes, yes, yes.' And that sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer.

"That's sort of the power of our movie: to help inspire kids to follow their dreams, and anyone really, kid or adult," he added. "It's been sort of a family journey of fulfilling your destiny."

The trailer, which debuted last week, was filled with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with some of the people important in Bieber's life, including mentor Usher and manager Scott "Scooter" Braun. Chu said that if Bieber's fans were tempted by what they saw in the trailer, they should love the film when it hits their local theater.

"We talked about the story of us sort of going back to his life and seeing a lot of archival footage and things that have never been seen that his mom shot when he was a kid," Chu said. "We don't have as much of that in the trailer, [and] the movie uses a lot, 'cause we're finding it really fascinating to see him grow. It's one of the very few generations that have been able to be shot when they were a kid to a teenager and see all the steps of his development."

Danny Boyle Capitalized On 'Slumdog Millionaire' To Make '127 Hours'

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:52 AM PDT

'We obviously had a short, small window in which to strike,' director recalls of his Oscar-winning glory.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

James Franco in "127 Hours"

Given the intense, harrowing story line of "127 Hours" — the upcoming film from "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle and starring James Franco — it stands to reason that the film's production was just as challenging.

Based on the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston, who was pinned beneath a boulder in Utah and freed himself by amputating his own arm, "127 Hours" wasn't a particularly easy sell with the major film studios.

"We obviously had a short, small window in which to strike, when people really believe in you for all sorts of reasons," Boyle told MTV News of pitching the project and capitalizing on his "Slumdog" success. "We used it to try and make this film, obviously. It was an amazing challenge. I'd always wanted to make it. I've always been fascinated by the idea of trapping someone. In a medium that's all about movement and change, constant vibration of images, I thought it would be wonderful to challenge that and see if we could make an action movie where the hero doesn't move."

That's where Franco's performance came in, a feat he said he accomplished with varying degrees of frustration and perseverance. "You could write [in a screenplay] that he tries to tie the pulley and then he gets frustrated, you can do that moment, but actually trying to do [that while] being trapped, and doing it with my left hand, and doing that for like 15 minutes, I remember yelling out [the F-word] a couple of times," Franco told MTV News of his experience. "That was like the character and me blurring at that moment.

"For me, that really showed how parts of the way we approached this performance are authentic on a real level," Franco added. "[We're] blurring the line between acting and experiencing, giving yourself physical tasks and trying to really complete them in a way."

Check out everything we've got on "127 Hours."

Pink's 'Raise Your Glass' Video Premieres

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 05:22 AM PDT

Just-released clip is alternately bizarre and uplifting.
By Kara Warner

Pink in the video for "Raise Your Glass"
Photo: LaFace Records

Just as she promised, Pink's new video for "Raise Your Glass" is colorful and chaotic and features "80,000 different things going on."

The clip for the upbeat single, which Pink has said she wrote for the underdogs, runs the visual gamut from ironic to uplifting to downright fun. The video opens with an overweight girl calmly eating in-between two cardboard cutouts of thin women. After a beat or two, the young girl punches one of the cutouts and knocks it over.

Pink then appears, appropriately costumed as Rosie the Riveter, singing the opening bars to the song. Cut to various scenes of shock-and-awe empowerment — Pink performing at a gay wedding, a reverse take on a bullfight wherein the singer threatens to deliver the final blow not upon the bull, but the bullfighter.

There is the scene with a sumo wrestler, where Pink faces off against a mustachioed man, which she described as "the middle-class working family against 'the man.' Another psychotic scene."

From there, we see more odd, striking images. There is a scene in what looks to be a dairy farm, but instead of cows being milked, a line of blindfolded women are hooked up to pumps that feed into a bottle for a calf. Another daring scene features Pink waking up from a series of potentially scandalous acts with various religious figures.

However, in the midst of all the images meant to shock, there are plenty that offer hope and encouragement: a montage of different, diverse faces that runs over the song's chorus, Pink and a nerdy-looking guy dancing up a storm at a school dance, Pink releasing lanterns into the sky, a woman crying at her graduation ceremony.

Obviously, "Raise Your Glass" has a lot going on, but it's all very Pink and suits her lovable, no-holds-barred spunk.

Gucci Mane was arrested in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon (November 2) after police discovered the rapper driving his vehicle down the wrong side of the road.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Brick Squad star (real name: Radric Davis) was charged with running a red light or stop sign, damage to government property, obstruction, no license, no proof of insurance and other traffic charges, in addition to driving on the wrong side of the road. Police reportedly had to use pepper spray to get Gucci into custody.

MTV News' request for comment to the Atlanta Police Department was not returned as of press time.

Gucci Mane was released from prison in May after serving six months of a yearlong sentence for a parole violation. The rapper has a history of drug issues and emotional instability following a shooting he was involved with, according to a lawyer who represented him in the past.

The charismatic Atlanta rapper has been in and out of prison over the past few years on a variety of infractions. Gucci was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital following his arrest, the Journal Constitution reported. He's expected to be booked at Fulton County Jail following his release.

Last month, Gucci Mane revealed in an interview that his last stint in jail changed him and he was channeling his experience through his latest album, The Appeal.

Republicans Make Major Gains In Midterm Elections

House projected to switch to GOP control; Senate still expected to be in Democratic hands.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images

Results are still pouring in, and probably will be for the next 24 hours, but the writing on the wall for Democrats on Tuesday night (November 2) is clear: A change is gonna come.

Nearly two years after President Barack Obama swept into power on a wave of excitement and promises of change that helped Democrats gain control of the White House and both houses of Congress in a rare political hat trick, voters gave the president's ambitious agenda a harsh rebuke in the midterm elections. According to the Huffington Post, exit polls showed that voters were very worried about the economy and not happy with the way Obama and Congress had handled the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, leading many to vote for Republicans or for candidates from the protest Tea Party.

In all, CNN projected that Republicans would pick up well above the 39 seats needed to take control of the 435-member House of Representatives. With possibly as many as 52 seats switching to the R column, a major sea change was afoot that could radically change the ability of President Obama to pass some of his major legislative priorities, and put other victories, such as the landmark health care bill, in danger of being picked apart or stalled.

Among the most decisive wins Tuesday night was the one by rising Republican star and Tea Party darling Marco Rubio in Florida, who beat Republican-turned-independent Charlie Crist for a Senate seat in one of the states that has become pivotal in recent election cycles. In Ohio, another state that has been one of the deciding factors in the past two presidential elections, Republican Rob Portman beat out Democrat Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher for the Senate.

One of the toughest and nastiest Senate races of the season was also won by a Republican, as Tea Party favorite Rand Paul took the Senate race in Kentucky, while one of the upstart party's other potential stars, Christine O'Donnell (best known for her "I am not a witch" campaign ad) lost her bid for Senate in Delaware.

It's unclear how many seats the new party-without-a-leader will pick up in all, but the next challenge will be how traditional Republicans will work with the Tea Party to govern given some of the TP's more radical ideas, such as getting rid of the federal income tax in favor of a flat tax and eliminating the Department of Education. While Republican leaders were ebullient about their big victories on Tuesday night, there were reports that some Tea Party candidates were already putting the party on notice that they would not necessarily fall in line and play by Washington business-as-usual rules.

With the out-of-power party typically gaining three seats in the Senate in midterms since World War II, Republicans were on track to double that number with an expected pickup of seven seats, according to Fox News' Karl Rove. Even with that swing, though, control of the Senate was expected to stay in Democratic hands, if only by a razor-thin margin.

Among the Republican incumbents picking up wins was longtime Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, as well as five-term Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa, while Arkansas' John Boozman was projected to beat incumbent Democratic Senator Blanche Lincoln. Adding to the W's in the Republican's column in the Senate was conservative Dan Coats' projected win to take over the seat held by retiring Democrat Evan Bayh in Indiana, as well as John Hoeven's win in North Dakota.

Republican WWE executive Linda McMahon faced a serious smackdown in her bid to win a Senate seat in Connecticut, losing to Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal despite spending tens of millions of her own fortune. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin was projected to win in that state's Senate race, while the results were too close to call at press time in Illinois in the bitter race to fill the Senate seat vacated by President Obama, with Republican Mark Kirk and rising Democratic star Alexi Giannoulias separated by just 1 percent.

Though this was painted as the year when incumbents were in danger of getting tossed in favor of fresh faces, a number of senators were projected to hold onto their seats, including Democrats Patrick Leahy (Vermont), Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (New York) and Barbara Mikulski (Maryland), as well as Republicans Tom Coburn (Oklahoma), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Richard Shelby (Alabama) and South Carolina's Jim DeMint, who has emerged as the veteran voice of the Tea Party and the person who could help integrate the insurgent movement into Congress.

For other incumbents, it was a tough night, as longtime Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold was projected to lose to Republican Ron Johnson. With only 37 of its 100 seats in play, the Senate was projected to remain in Democratic hands, though key races in Washington and Nevada were still up for grabs at press time. In one of the closest races, Nevada's Harry Reid, the Democratic Senate majority leader, was in the political fight of his life against Republican challenger Sharron Angle. At press time, Democrats were projected to hold 48 seats in the Senate while Republicans picked up four to bump up to 44, with 50 needed for control of the chamber.

It was a tough night for Democrats in an often harsh campaign season in which candidates spent more than $3.5 billion. Many pundits speculated that, like fellow Democrat Bill Clinton after his party was handed a crushing defeat in midterms in 1994, the losses may force Obama to work more closely with his Republican rivals. The burden of control of at least one house of Congress and the ability to more effectively stymie legislation in the Senate could also force Republicans to come up with some concrete, workable ideas for pulling the country out of its economic malaise after being tagged with the nickname "The Party of No" due to their obstruction of many of Obama's policies.

There are plenty more results to come over the course of the night, so check back with MTV News on Wednesday morning for all the latest news on Tuesday's midterm elections.

What's the perfect appetizer for Thanksgiving dinner? A Kanye West show, of course. The Chicago MC will perform during the 2010 Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, along with pop stars like Jessica Simpson and Juanes, according to The Associated Press.

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie, R&B legend Gladys Knight, boy band Big Time Rush and singer Victoria Justice will also take the stage during the annual production. While the mix of performers might seem strange to some, Orlando Veras, a spokesman for the Holiday ritual, said it's all part of Macy's master plan.

"We want to make sure we are capturing people who are in the zeitgeist," Veras told the AP, before assuring any who may be worried that all of the performances will be "family-friendly."

This year marks the 84th annual parade, which has become as integral to Thanksgiving as football. India.Arie, Keri Hilson, Miranda Cosgrove and the casts of Broadway shows "American Idiot," ''Elf," ''Memphis" and "Million Dollar Quartet" will also appear during the parade. The procession will begin on New York's Central Park West and end in front of Macy's flagship store, located on 34th Street.

The G.O.O.D. Music MC recently premiered his short film, "Runaway," starring himself and model/actress Selita Ebanks, on MTV. His fourth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, hits shelves November 22, just three days before Thanksgiving.

"Real World: San Diego" alum Jamie Chung is trading her small-screen stardom for big-screen cred. Having survived her San Diego season and the "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno II," her latest role will have her traveling to Bangkok to be a part of "Hangover 2."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chung is set to play Stu's (Ed Helms) fiancée. Despite the fact that it looked like Stu would end up with Heather Graham's character at the end of "Hangover," Graham will not reprise her role for the sequel.

Jamie's acting credits include roles in "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," "Sorority Row," "Grown Ups," Zack Snyder's upcoming fantasy "Sucker Punch," and the thriller "Premium Rush," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The major plot details for "Hangover 2" are under wraps, of course, but we do know that Liam Neeson will appear in a brief cameo and all the guys — Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha — will journey from L.A. to Thailand. And Ken Jeong will be back as crazy Mr. Chow, though he has no idea how.

"No comment!" he told MTV News recently. "I'm just happy that I'm in it. For me, this is not predestined to happen so I'm just so happy I'm involved in any moment. Anything Todd asked me to do, I would do. Anything."

Lil Wayne may have been gone, but the Cash Money Records rapper was hardly forgotten.

We can thank his work ethic for that — he released a bevy of videos and an album, I Am Not a Human Being, while away — but Wayne also owes a debt of gratitude to two bloggers who helped him stay connected.

Through the WeezyThanxYou.com site, Wayne was able to communicate with fans who wrote to him while he was in prison. Webmasters Karen Civil (KarenCivil.com) and Karla Moy (AllThings-Fresh.net, Drake's fan site) worked with Wayne and his camp on the project.

"Going into it, given what his situation was, you weren't really thinking how we were going to keep him hot; everybody was sad he was going away," Civil told MTV News about the blog's origins.

"The first week in, he wanted his fans, more or less — it wasn't about commercial success for him — he just wanted fans to know he was still there and to keep the presence with them," Civil continued. "So, just brainstorming, we put it together. We created the site and then spoke with 'Tez [Wayne's manager, Cortez Bryant] as far as keeping his music out and having the 'Free Weezy' shirts and doing all this stuff."

On Tuesday (November 2), Wayne wrote his 10th and final letter to fans. Weezy thanked them for their support and prayers and relayed that he also prayed for his followers.

"I smiled like a child on Christmas," he wrote about receiving their letters. "But when I began to read them, my heart smiled."

"Imagine being imprisoned for eight months with the same routine every day," Moy told MTV News. "That's no fun at all. So besides Wayne's phone calls and visits, these fan letters brought life to him. I also believe it motivated him to stay positive throughout his sentence. I can't wait for Wayne to come home."

It's "Welcome Home Weezy" week at MTV News. Check back every day for articles, updates, blog posts and more as we track the countdown to the Carter's homecoming. Stay tuned!

Demi Lovato Has Discussed Rumors, Body Issues In Past Interviews

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:40 AM PDT

The teen singer/actress has opened up previously to MTV News about dealing with public scrutiny.
By Jocelyn Vena

Since news broke late Monday night that Demi Lovato had left her tour with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment for "emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time," her fans have been coming to the singer/actress' side sending well-wishes to the "Camp Rock" star.

Lovato has always been open with her personal struggles with bullies, as well as with her own body issues and the constant scrutiny her life is under as a celebrity. "When I was younger I used to struggle from always feeling insecure about my body ... because I wasn't as skinny as Paris Hilton or as thin as some girls. I have a normal body type, and when I started getting older and doing more red carpets I would look to Kim Kardashian because she has the curves," she explained to MTV News this summer about why Kardashian was a role model to her. "I feel healthy, and I feel like I look great."

While Lovato hasn't commented about the speculation over why she's seeking treatment, she always has maintained that she tries to brush off rumors as best as possible. In a June 2009 interview with us, Lovato addressed having her life under constant scrutiny.

"I try not to listen to rumors," she said. "Rumors are stupid. They're not true. I mean, of course you get stuff like that all the time. You read it online, and you're just like, 'Why did they even make that up?' But, I mean, I don't really remember them, 'cause they're not important to me."

But there is one person Lovato wishes people would stop writing about: her little sister and "Desperate Housewives" actress Madison De La Garza. "She's great. She's a beautiful little girl, and she asks me for advice sometimes," Demi said. "She's gotten her little taste of haters online and things like that, and just teaching her how to deal with it has actually gotten us closer."

Regardless of Lovato's current issues, the singer/actress always has tried to send a positive message to her fans. It was a message she was quick to include in the video for her song "Remember December." As Demi explained, the clip was "all about being fierce and kind of, like, taking control as a girl. It's like girl empowerment. Yeah, divas!"

Share your well-wishes for Demi in the comments.

Say what you want about Ke$ha — and some people certainly do — but when she "goes hard," she goes haaaarrd.

New photos from the set of her "We R Who We R" video, likely to be the first clip released from her November 22 sophomore album, Cannibal, have emerged online. For the video, the party moves to a downtown Los Angeles tunnel, which, under the direction of legendary director Hype Williams, comes complete with fiery flash-pots and explosions.

The new photos — different from the ones that hit the Internet earlier Tuesday (November 2) — show Ke$ha in a look reminiscent of Rihanna's post-apocalyptic getup in Jay-Z's "Run This Town" video, with the pop star rocking ripped-up leggings and a one-piece bodysuit covered in shattered glass. And, naturally, there's a bandolier across her body for good measure.

Reports from the set also indicated that at least two cars drag-raced down the same underground street for a different sequence in the video.

The track takes its cues from its Animal predecessors, but with its edges honed like the broken mirror parts Ke$ha wears in the video. Less Auto-Tune (that's less, not none) and more topical lyrics help make "Who We R" a step forward for the oft-badmouthed pop star who recently told Entertainment Weekly that she wrote the song with her mind on the recent wave of young people who had taken their own lives due to bullying. "I wanted to inspire people to be themselves. It's a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities." Especially if your quirk is to wear silver lipstick and an outfit made of broken glass, padlocks and bullets.

Are you looking forward to Ke$ha's upcoming video? Let us know in the comments!

Jon Favreau, Guy Ritchie, Oliver Stone — these are just some of the acclaimed directors that Robert Downey Jr. has collaborated with over the course of his lengthy career. But after 40 years in the business, RDJ says he finally met his filmmaking soul mate in the form of "Due Date" director Todd Phillips.

When the "Iron Man" and "Sherlock Holmes" star spoke with MTV News on the "Due Date" red carpet in New York City on Monday about his work on the new film, he showered Phillips with praise. "What happened was that I found my soul mate in the artistry of Todd Phillips," he declared. "He's a genius."

Downey suggested, however, that his respect for Phillips might not have been apparent had you seen the two on the set of "Due Date." The actor admitted that he and Phillips often got at each other's throats, but thankfully, that was all just part of the process.

"We would get together and have heated arguments," revealed Downey. "If we had taped them, you would have thought that we'd never speak to each other again."

But the by-product of these conflicts, said Downey, was the creation of some fully formed characters — namely, his role as the expectant father Peter and Zach Galifianakis' Ethan, an aspiring actor. "We made a character for [Galifianakis]," Downey explained, referring to his collaboration with Phillips. "We made him, we built him! Plus, he's a genius."

Indeed, these occasionally heated creative conversations existed only between Downey and Phillips, as Galifianakis told MTV — jokingly, we hope! — that he was never invited to participate in the collaboration process.

"These two differ. I wasn't allowed to talk," the comic actor said in his signature deadpan voice. "I would say something, and have you ever seen two people roll their eyes at the exact same time? That's what would happen."

Check out everything we've got on "Due Date."

Demi Lovato is currently seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues," and the promoter behind her tour with the Jonas Brothers is sending her the best.

"Everyone on the tour obviously wishes her the best of luck and wishes her well," a rep for Live Nation told E! Online.

For fans wondering how the tour, which wraps up November 13 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will resume without its leading lady, it's reported that she will not be replaced during the remaining set of shows in South America. The show will make a stop Thursday in Santiago, Chile, with a concert in Brazil later this week.

A source told TMZ, "There are no plans to replace Demi for the remaining six days on the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert tour."

A rep for the Jonas Brothers hadn't responded to MTV News e-mails for comment by press time. The brothers have not yet commented on the matter.

Earlier on Tuesday (November 2), Disney released a statement in support of one of its biggest stars, thanks to leading roles in the "Camp Rock" films and as the star of "Sonny With a Chance." "We support Demi's decision to put her health first and we send her our best wishes," the statement read; Lovato's show "Sonny With a Chance" appears on the Disney Channel and is currently on a scheduled hiatus.

Demi's father, Patrick Lovato, is also speaking up about his daughter seeking treatment, noting that he thought she was feeling the pressures of acquiring so much fame at such a young age. "There are a lot of pressures. That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney," he told Radar Online. "It's just going to happen."

Share your well-wishes for Demi in the comments.

The global electronic dance music community celebrated a victory last week as Underworld conquered a first for EDM groups in the States. Never before has an electronic act performed live on late-night television. But that all changed when Underworld's Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson treated "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" viewers to a live performance of "Always Loved a Film," a collaboration for which they brought along electronic music staples Mark Knight and D. Ramirez.

Along with that feat, Underworld are also toasting the release of their latest album, Barking. Prior to the release of their new LP, Underworld hadn't much tested the waters of collaboration, but Knight and Ramirez reached out to Hyde late last year to ask if he'd be interested in providing the vocal for their track "Downpipe."

"That was one of the things which made it possible for us to think about collaborating with people," Hyde tells MTV News of Knight and D. Ramirez, who also joined forces on the Barking track "Between Stars."

"The whole collaboration thing on this album comes out of 20 years of having our work remixed, and you hear all these cool remixes, but it's too late to collaborate with those people. The album is out and you're on tour, but you're thinking, 'That guy did something fantastic!' and, 'If [only] we had that track on the album, instead of the one we had.' After 20 years of that, Rick was like, 'Enough is enough, and let's start jamming with these people!' "

That's just what Underworld did. Their eighth studio album embraces their classic sound but adds an undeniably fresh vibe. From "Scribble," the euphoric drum-and-bass collabo with fellow Brit High Contrast (a.k.a. Lincoln Barrett) to "Diamond Jigsaw," a guitar-laden electro-pop track co-produced by veteran Paul van Dyk, to the piano-laced ballad "Louisiana," Barking serves as a refreshing symphony of sounds and emotions.

"Every time I hear that song ['Louisiana'], I think, 'People might not get this when I say it, but it's kind of dark.' I had written the verse and the chorus with a piano and it was in the archive, and I said, 'I think there's something here, something really strong and I think we need to make the rest of the tune,' " Hyde recalled. "So I said [to Rick], 'Let's try something radical. We'll get into the room with you on piano, we'll have a beat box, and I'll have a microphone!' " he explained.

The move was a radical experiment for Underworld who typically work via the Internet. "Eventually, this song appeared and there it was, and we sort of crafted it in a really, really traditional way. When it was finished we just felt, we don't want anyone to work on it; it's done, it's complete."

Underworld continue to embrace the collaborative process, pairing up with dance music download giant Beatport for a remix contest focused on the album's first track, "Bird 1" (itself a collaboration with Deep Dish's Dubfire), in which fans can compete to win a bag full of studio gear and more.

Hyde explained their reasons for agreeing to the Beatport initiative.

"If we remain an island, then people will think, 'These guys don't want to interact. We can't get in — they don't even know we exist!' And for us, it's about communicating. It's about keeping the doors open to the idea of finding something out. We're not expecting anything; that's kind of the best way to do it, but let's see what happens. So if we found somebody, it might be somebody we end up collaborating with or it might end up being somebody we write for or somebody that we just support and give them all of our traffic."

And what advice can Karl offer young hopefuls? "I say be honest, look inside yourself and [ask yourself], what do you want to do, not what do you think we want you to do. That would be the complete opposite of what we're looking for. Just be yourself and keep doing that because that's the thing that will connect with a lot of people."

Lil Wayne Has Another Legal Issue To Address Post-Prison

The good news for Lil Wayne (born Dwayne Carter) is that once he steps out of the gates at New York's Rikers Island prison on Thursday after serving nearly nine months of a one-year sentence for attempted possession of a gun, he truly is a free man.

"When he gets released on Thursday, he has satisfied his obligations to New York," the rapper's lawyer, Stacey Richman, told MTV News on Tuesday (November 2). "Part of the resolution of the case was that there's nothing [else], no probation or parole, because the plea was to attempted possession."

That doesn't mean Wayne will be totally free and clear. There's still the matter of his sentence in Arizona stemming from a January 22, 2008, arrest near a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in which authorities claimed they found cocaine, Ecstasy and a handgun on Weezy's tour bus.

While Wayne was in Rikers, a plea deal was also reached in that case in which the MC was sentenced to three years of unsupervised probation, community service and no jail time. That deal had Wayne plead guilty to one count of possession of a dangerous drug in exchange for the dismissal of three other drug and weapons charges.

"Even though it's treated as a felony while he's on probation, if he completes his probation without any violations, the offense will be redesignated as a misdemeanor," Wayne's Arizona attorney, James Tilson, told MTV News. Aside from flying out to sign some paperwork sometime in the next few weeks, that means Wayne will not have to appear in court again in Arizona.

Tilson said Weezy's unsupervised probation will be transferred from Arizona to Florida, where that office will decide on what standard conditions of probation the rapper may have to adhere to. While he will not have a set number of monthly appointments, is not subject to drug testing and can travel and carry on with his music career, Tilson said it is up to Wayne's Florida probation officer to decide any other terms of his probation.

And though the plea in Arizona clears up any major remaining legal issues on Wayne's calendar, Tilson said any future felony gun or drug arrests could possibly land his client back in front of a judge in that state. "The prosecutor's office has the discretion to file a violation of probation if something else were to happen," Tilson said. "Chances are fairly slim that if it was not in Arizona or Yuma that they would, but it is totally up to the prosecutor's office."

Wayne intends to fly to his home in Miami and get right back in the lab as soon as he's out, and his plans also call for a cameo appearance at protégé Drake's Saturday night show in Las Vegas.

He penned his final letter from prison this week, thanking fans for their support and reflecting on his time behind bars. "I think back to when I first arrived and I had no clue what I'd be experiencing. I was never scared, worried, nor bothered by the situation," he wrote. "For that, I thank God, my family, and you, my amazing fans. I prayed for you all every night, as I'm now aware that I as in y'alls prayers as well."

Lil Wayne has managed to remain successful while away from the spotlight. He was named #7 on the 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game list, his album I Am Not a Human Being debuted at #1 on the charts, and his Drake collaboration "Right Above It" currently rests at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It's "Welcome Home Weezy" week at MTV News. Check back every day for articles, updates, blog posts and more as we track the countdown to the Carter's homecoming. Stay tuned!

Choreographer Shane Sparks was ordered on Monday to stand trial on eight counts of sex involving underage girls. The 41-year old hip-hop dancer (born Melvin Shane Sparks) and former judge on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," was arrested on December 18 at his Los Angeles-area home on charges that involved alleged sexual contact with an underage girl in the 1990s.

The Associated Press reported that during a preliminary hearing on Monday a Superior Court judge ruled that there was enough evidence to bring Sparks to trial on six counts of lewd acts on a child and two counts of oral copulation of a person under 16.

Sparks' lawyer, Steve Meister, told MTV News on Tuesday (November 2) that he believes the witness in the case has "serious" credibility issues and he plans to question the statute of limitations on the charges.

"We will continue to challenge the statute on constitutional grounds and I think we have a strong case," said Meister, noting that the witness testified in the preliminary hearing and that the burden of proof to bring the charges forward at that point was very low.

Meister added that the statute of limitations on some of the charges against Sparks ran out almost a decade ago, with others timing out around 2006. "Nothing was reported back then and for someone to claim now that justice has to be done? All the challenges we made to this case were made at the preliminary hearing and I'm not persuaded of her veracity in the slightest," he said. "And we are not done."

The alleged acts reportedly began in 1993 and continued until 1997. The child in question was identified in court documents by her first name and last initial and was described as being under the age of 14. Sparks was hit with the six felony counts of committing a lewd act on a child, "with the intent of arousing, appealing to, and gratifying the lust, passions and sexual desires of the said defendant and the said child." The alleged incidents are said to have occurred at various times between July 1, 1994 and April 30, 1997.

He was also charged with two counts of oral copulation of a person under the age of 16 by someone over the age of 21 for incidents that allegedly occurred between April 4, 1995 and April 30, 1997 and August 4, 1995 and April 30, 1997. At the time of his arrest, a Los Angeles TV station reported that the victim was one of Sparks' dance students at Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles.

Cincinnati-born Sparks has worked with Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica and Lindsay Lohan and was nominated for an Emmy for his choreography on "So You Think You Can Dance." He is scheduled to be arraigned on November 15.

Demi Lovato announced late Monday that she was seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues," and now Disney is sending "best wishes" to the teen star.

"We support Demi's decision to put her health first and we send her our best wishes," a Disney spokesperson told People; Lovato's show "Sonny With a Chance" appears on the Disney Channel and is currently on a scheduled hiatus.

Her father recalled his own brush with the entertainment industry and how hard it was on Demi's older sister, Dallas. "[Demi's mother] Dianne and I each played in a band and we toured all over the United States and Canada and our oldest daughter Dallas went with us and I could see then what the pressures would be like for a child on tour because it was hard on Dallas too," Patrick said. "She enjoyed it because we were always on the road and we had a nice bus and it wasn't too bad but the hours were difficult.

"[Demi] grew up around it, so I guess that's why she went into it; I guess it's in her genes with her mom and her dad," he continued. "Mainly watching her mom; I'd gotten out of it myself. 'Cause someone had to take care of the kids."

Patrick and Demi are estranged, and he is reportedly battling cancer. Lovato has spoken in the past about her relationship with him. In an interview with MTV News in 2009, she said, "I wrote a song called 'For the Love of a Daughter' with William Beckett from the Academy Is ... . Totally wasn't planning on writing a song that deep or anything, but we just got together, had a really long talk and then spit out this song."

The song is about Lovato's relationship with her dad, and she hoped that by addressing it, she could help her fans out. "It's basically about my past relationship with my birth father. ... I think everybody — well, a lot of people — go through this situation where parents divorce, and what they don't realize is that it really affects you. It's selfish for me to bottle up my past when I could be helping others."

Share your well-wishes for Demi in the comments.

On their new single, "The Time (the Dirty Bit)," the Black Eyed Peas rejoice in having the time of their life. And that's exactly what the group's frontwoman, Fergie, is doing as she's been named one of Glamour magazine's 2010 Women of the Year. In an interview for Glamour's December issue conducted by former winner Katie Couric, the 35-year-old songstress opened up about her band's recent success and her marriage to Josh Duhamel, while also giving advice to young women.

"For some lucky reason or gift from God, I've known what I wanted to do since I was a little girl," Fergie told Couric. "And even through disappointments and rejection, there was something inside of me that wouldn't give up. I'm a survivor, and I'm very driven."

Admitting that she hasn't always had the time to reflect on her success, Fergie revealed to the magazine that she doesn't even have her awards out on display. "My mom and dad and stepdad ordered display cases for Josh and me to put our awards in," the singer said. "They haven't arrived yet, but it's nice to think about getting my awards out of the safe and putting them in one by one. Because when you're in the middle of it, you don't just sit there and give yourself gold stars all the time."

In addition to Fergie's numerous accolades, the pop star also dished about her actor husband. "Well, I knew, getting into a relationship with him, that girls were very attracted to him," she said of Duhamel's flock of female admirers. "He was filming a show called 'Las Vegas' and was constantly around half-naked women. It was just the premise of the show. For me, I'm not a jealous person. That's just not my thing. You have to have trust in your relationship."

Asked what her advice is for the number of women out there who are not satisfied with how they look, Fergie replied, "It's become actually the norm, I feel. And it's really sad. The thing that I can say is, you're not alone. [And if] you start making the right choices for yourself, all of a sudden you start feeling better and better ... You'd be surprised how addicting high self-esteem is."

As for whether the singer has any plans to have babies, Fergie revealed that it's on her list of goals, but added that "a girl's gotta keep something private."

Meanwhile, the Black Eyed Peas are gearing up to release their brand-new album, The Beginning (due out on November 30), featuring the aforementioned "The Time (the Dirty Bit)" as its lead single. The tune samples the "Dirty Dancing" theme song "(I've Had) the Time of My Life."

President Obama Urges Youth To Vote On Ryan Seacrest Radio Show

'You can't shape your future if you don't participate,' the president said on the morning of midterm elections.

If you were driving around listening to "On-Air With Ryan Seacrest" on Tuesday morning (November 2), and you thought you heard him say he was about to talk to President Obama in between reports on Demi Lovato, the traffic and weather, you weren't mistaken.

In the final push to get out the vote as midterm election balloting got under way across the nation, the president made a number of pre-taped appearances on mainstream morning radio shows, dropping in to chat with "American Idol" host Seacrest as well as popular urban radio personalities Russ Parr and Steve Harvey.

"This is such a critical election, because we're living in a huge moment of change in this country," the president said of the past two years, which he called the toughest since the Great Depression. "Despite that, I am optimistic about this country because of young people. Because of their energy, because of their enthusiasm, because of their ideas. But none of that will make a difference if they're not participating."

With pundits predicting that the Democratic Party could lose control of one, perhaps both, houses of Congress, the president steered clear of any partisan rhetoric while chatting with Seacrest, instead focusing on big picture topics like immigration reform, jobs, terrorism and his role as First Father while urging the wave of young voters who helped him get elected in 2008 not to stay home on election day.

"I just want to make sure that everybody who's listening understands we need that same enthusiasm and interest on the part of young people in 2010," he said. "Because of the issues of war and peace, the issues of the economy, making sure that we have good opportunity for young people. That they can afford to go to college, that they can find good jobs. Those issues are still on the table, and we're going to need to make sure that we keep on making progress in the years to come."

After being criticized last week for becoming the first sitting president to appear on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show," which is considered by some Washington pundits as a lightweight entertainment show, Obama again faced barbs from the right for the broad pop-culture reach of his election-day radio messaging.

Rather than ask about Justin Bieber or Snooki, though, Seacrest kept the 10-minute chat mostly topical, quizzing the president about the negative tone of campaign ads and the revelation over the weekend that two bombs were found on cargo planes in what appears to have been an attempted terror attack.

In speaking to a young audience, Obama stressed the positive work his administration has done providing Pell Grants to students and encouraging them to make sure they do everything they can to maximize their education. "We live in a competitive global environment and the more we have the best trained young people in the world, not only will that be good for them, that will be good for the whole country," he said.

And though he touched on the attempted plane bombings and urged citizens to remain alert to prevent terror attacks, Obama also faced a few lighter questions about being a dad in the White House.

"The truth is the girls are thriving," Obama said about daughters Sasha and Malia. Because the press have kept up their promise to leave the first daughters alone, the president said his kids have adjusted well to school, made friends and are able to go to the mall, have sleepovers and go to the movies just like other grade-schoolers. They even got to go trick-or-treating on Sunday, with Malia dressing as a Sour Patch girl and Sasha donning a turkey costume.

The president also admitted that he never gets to hit the snooze button because of his hectic work schedule. When he tries, the White House operator has been instructed to keep calling until he wakes up. He also said he'd been called "much worse" than "dude," which is how Stewart referred to him at one point last week during their interview.

"The main thing I want everyone to remember is you can't shape your future if you don't participate," the president said. "Young people all across this country, they're the ones who are going to make the difference, not just now but in the future."
