Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh?

In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he's the same guy he always was.

"I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me," Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. "And that's been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing."

What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop's best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically.

The first shot, "Power," was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. 'Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them.

"He really figured that great music will change things," RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine's Elliot Wilson explained.

It wasn't just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people's good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident.

In words that he couldn't seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online.

"He did select press but he made a lot of noise online," New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium."

But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that "he really brought it all back to the music," as Callahan-Bever put it. "At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or 'Today' show appearance can take away from [that]."

Chris Brown Apologizes For Homophobic Raz-B Twitter Rant

'Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter,' singer tells TMZ.

A day after launching a series of N-bombs and homophobic tweets in the direction of former B2K singer Raz-B, Chris Brown was feeling contrite Thursday (December 30). The singer, who recently boasted about his completion of a court-ordered, yearlong domestic-violence course as part of his sentencing for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna, told gossip site TMZ that he regretted making crude sexual comments that were considered homophobic.

"Yesterday was an unfortunate lack in judgment sparked by public Twitter attacks from Raz-B, who was bent on getting attention," Brown said of the virtual feud. "Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter. I have learned over the past few years to not condone or represent acts of violence against anyone."

On Wednesday, the "Deuces" singer got charged up when Raz-B tweeted a comment critical of Brown in the midst of a flurry of tweets in praise of Rihanna. "I'm just sittin here thinking how can n---as like [Eric Benet] & [Chris Brown] disrespect women as intelligent as Halle Berry, Rihanna," Raz wrote.

Brown quickly shot back, tweeting, "N---a you want attention! Grow up n---a!!! Di-- in da booty ass lil boy."

The harsh comments were an apparent allusion to allegations Raz-B made (and later retracted) that B2K manager Brian Stokes had molested him. Several other homophobia-tinged responses followed, but, unlike in the past when Brown went into Internet silence after making heated statements, he vowed that this time, he would not delete his Twitter account.

"I was minding my damn business and Peter pan decides to pop off!!!" Brown wrote. "I'm not mad though!!! I'm just not silent nor am i one of these scary R&B cats!!" In light of the harsh statements, Brown followed up by writing, "I'm not homophobic! He's just disrespectful!!!"

Since the Rihanna assault, Brown has made a series of outrageous or confounding statements that he quickly followed with apologies or retractions. He followed that pattern on Thursday, when he told TMZ, "Molestation and victims of such acts are not to be taken lightly; and for my comments I apologize -- from the bottom of my heart." An unnamed source connected to Brown pointed out that Raz's allegations against Stokes were suspect, adding that regardless of their veracity, Brown's comments were not acceptable.

"I love all of my fans, gay and straight," Brown went on to say. "I have friends from all walks of life and I am committed, with God's help, to continue becoming a better person."

Though Brown was extending an olive branch, TMZ also noted that Raz's brother, the singer known as Ricky Romance, posted a video threatening that if he saw Brown in Los Angeles, he would "put my mother----ing pistol in your mouth." A spokesperson for Raz noted that Ricky's comments do not represent Raz's feelings but are the result of a protective instinct among siblings. "Raz-B has already spoken to his brother and told him to chill out," the spokesperson said.

As fellow Cash Money affiliates Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine and Baby made their way into the Fifth African Baptist Church in New Orleans on Thursday morning (December 30), hundreds of fans gathered outside the church to pay tribute to fallen hometown rapper Magnolia Shorty.

In addition to Weezy and his crew, a number of other local bounce artists made their presence felt at the funeral, including Partners-N-Crime, Kilo G, DJ Jubilee, Big Freeda and Ms. Tee, who was the first female artist to sign with Cash Money, followed by Shorty in 1995, who was the label's second, and last, female member.

The closed funeral began at 11 a.m., and while more than 1,000 friends and relatives packed into the brick house of worship, the street outside was overflowing with nearly 1,500 fans paying tribute to the bounce legend. Many were wearing shirts in praise of Shorty (born Renetta Lowe), 28, with messages such as "R.I.P. Magnolia Shorty" and "We Love You Renetta," as well as buttons that read "Forever 'Shorty.' "

Wayne, Birdman and Mack Maine tweeted their condolences in the wake of Shorty's murder last week, but on Thursday, it was former Cash Money rapper and Hot Boyz member B.G. who remembered his fallen comrade after the funeral.

"Magnolia Shorty was like a sister to me and it ain't just what she meant to me; it's what she meant to Louisiana, it's what she meant to New Orleans," B.G. told MTV News, noting that he was the one who brought Shorty into the Cash Money fold when she was just 12 years old. "She was the queen of bounce. She was someone you loved to be around. She was the best at what she do. I'm really speechless right now, but it ain't sunk in yet. ... She owned this city, but she was this close to ownin' the world."

The program for the service featured a photo of Shorty under the headline "A Homegoing Celebration for a Phenomenal Queen." Shorty was gunned down last Monday alongside an unidentified man in a vehicle that crashed near a New Orleans East housing complex. Her murder came seven years after the November 2003 killing of another New Orleans rapper, James "Soulja Slim" Tapp, whose original stage name was Magnolia Slim and who grew up with Shorty in the Magnolia housing projects and gave her the Magnolia Shorty stage name.

The funeral was to be followed by a traditional New Orleans second line celebration in which her casket was be paraded down the street accompanied by musicians, friends, family and supporters.

Is T-Pain Signing To Young Money?

Will the king of Auto-Tune soon rock some Young Money-approved jewels? Judging by the footage of some bling that recently hit the Web, T-Pain may be the newest member of Wayne's crew.

In a video that surfaced online Thursday (December 30), jeweler Gabriel Jacobs, who has created rock-laden pieces for Birdman, 50 Cent and more, shows off a hefty ruby-and-black-diamond-studded piece in the shape of the New York Yankees-inspired Young Money logo that also features what appear to be tiny Nappy Boy insignias (the mark of Pain's label) along the sides. Jacobs says in the clip that he crafted the king-size ice, which he says costs about $40,000 alone and almost $100,000 with the chain, because Pain is signing with Weezy's camp.

A rep for T-Pain did not respond to MTV News' request for comment at press time.

A T-Pain move to Young Money would continue the Auto-Tune crooner's longstanding musical relationship with Weezy. Wayne and T-Pain have already charted together with collabos like Weezy's Tha Carter III single "Got Money" and Pain's Thr33 Ringz cut "Can't Believe It," which both dropped in 2008. The dreadlocked duo have also maintained that they plan to put out a joint album, an effort Pain told MTV News in March was temporarily thwarted by Weezy's eight-month prison bid.

"The T-Wayne album, we're actually gonna wait until he gets out," Pain said about Weezy's jail time. "He has so much going on. He has Rebirth out right now. I don't wanna interrupt that. We just gonna wait until he gets out to really get in on that. We recorded a bunch of songs. But, right now, it's time for him and his personal sh--. We definitely got an album's worth of material, but it's only an album's worth. It's nothing to pick from. We just got an album. We can put out whatever we feel like and say, 'Hey, this is T-Wayne's album,' or we can actually try to make it good. Like we're actually trying to make an album and say, 'This is the good T-Wayne album.' Rather than just record 12 songs and say, 'Here you go, mutha----as! I know you want it. You gonna buy it anyway, just 'cause you think it's good.' "

For Wayne's part, the MC has said that the collabo-friendly stars "both have the same energy" when he explained their similarities to MTV News in 2008.

"I don't sleep. If you ask anybody, I don't sleep. I think it's the cousin of death. As much as you sleep, you're impersonating death to me. He don't sleep. I play all day. He plays all day and all night. The connection is crazy," he said. "He loves to be creative, he loves to work; I love to create, I love to work. He really wants people to respect his rapping; I really want people to respect my harmonizing."

Justin Timberlake has said over and over again that he's not ready to record a new album. Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped the pop star-turned-actor from hitting the studio for collaborations with other artists and doing some recording here and there for himself. His latest musical serving to appease his hungry fans is a track called "Take You Down," which leaked online Thursday (December 30).

Timberlake opens the drum-heavy track with a summon to all the girls, before a female vocalist echoes the matching line with a series of stuttering "uh-oh's." The song, reportedly produced by the Neptunes, finds JT luring, tempting and somewhat challenging his female interest.

"I've seen my magic/ What's your looks and your religion?/ And I want you to understand that I can make you feel better/ So it's me and you, my place, sexiness all day/ I'mma do whatever you like, if you cater to me all night, girl," he sings during the second verse.

In addition to production credits, various Internet blogs have reported that "Take You Down" may in fact be a demo as opposed to one of the 29-year-old's own songs.

Timberlake recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times about fans who feel like the star has neglected his musical calling. "They're looking at me like, 'Why aren't you staying with one path?' " he said. "They look at me like I'm ungrateful for my music career because I want to do film."

Until JT feels ready to hit the studio to record the follow-up to 2006's FutureSex/LoveSounds, fans will have to make do with the singer's scarce musical ventures. His next offering may be a collaboration with Drake, who recently revealed, "I've always wanted to work with him, and it's in the works right now: Me and Justin Timberlake will probably have a song soon."

Eminem's Proof Tribute 'Difficult' Leaks Online

Shady remembers late best friend in somber track.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Eminem has always maintained that the death of his best friend and D12 member Proof was one of the most devastating moments of his life, and four years after his passing, Eminem is still upholding the late MC's legacy in his music.

On Thursday (December 30), the Em track "Difficult" surfaced on the Web, in which the Detroit lyricist devotes several bars to his relationship with his fallen homey -- who was gunned down in a Motor City nightclub in 2006 -- and how the memory of his trusted friend still lingers.

"Doody, most of my life it's just been me and you there/ I continuously stare at pictures of you/ I never got to say 'I love you' as much as I wanted to, but I do/ Yeah, I say it now when you can't hear me/ What the f--- good does that do me now?/ But somehow I know you're near me," Em rhymes in the first verse. On "Difficult," a solemn, hook-free record powered by somber chords and a glacially slow beat, Eminem speaks on the enduring impact the loss of Proof has had on his life and the lives of their mutual friends.

"Everyone else is just trying to pick up the pieces/ Man, how could you touch so many f---ing lives and just leave us?" he spits. "They say grievance has its way of affecting everyone different/ If it's true, how the f--- I'm supposed to get over you?"

Em also opens up about the duo's bond as childhood buddies who remained close friends for much of their lives until Proof, born DeShaun Holton, was killed at age 32.

"Doody, that's what we called each other/ I don't know where it came from, but it just stuck with us, we was always brothers/ Never thought about each other's skin colors," Em rhymes. The Recovery star also speaks candidly about cherishing an article of clothing Proof wore during a special moment in Em's life.

"And this may sound a little strange, but I'mma tell it/ I found a jacket that you left at my wedding, I picked it up to smell it/ I wrapped it up in plastic until I put it in glass and hang it up in the hallway so I can always look at it," he raps.

Em also hints at the controversy surrounding Proof's violent death. The D12 rapper allegedly shot a fellow clubgoer at the Detroit haunt CCC and was shot and killed by a bouncer who was related to Proof's shooting victim. A local prosecutor later ruled that the bouncer was acting in his cousin's defense and did not face murder charges. In "Difficult," Em paints a portrait of Proof as a peaceful person who wouldn't have resorted to violence unnecessarily.

"You were the peacemaker, Doody/ I know sometimes you were moody, but you hated confrontation and truly hated the feuding/ But you was down for yours whenever it came to scrappin'/ If it had to happen, it had to happen," he spits.

The leaked track isn't the first time Shady has turned to music to eulogize his late friend. Em said earlier this year that "You're Never Over," from his chart-topping seventh album, Recovery, "finally did Proof some kind of justice by being able to put that together and dump my heart on the record."

With all the 2010 wrap-up stories and year-end lists dominating these last few days, it's time to start thinking beyond New Year's Eve and into the new year. And you know what that means: New Year's resolutions. The most popular vows generally revolve around health (weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking) and finance (spend less).

However when MTV News caught up with a few of our favorite stars recently to find out what they resolve to do in 2011, their commitments were a bit more unique.

"My New Year's resolution is to stay true to myself," "Bottoms Up" singer Trey Songz revealed. "Regardless of what anybody says, I'll never let anybody else's thoughts dictate that of my own."

"Probably just progress more as an actor," said 12-year-old "Modern Family" scene-stealer Rico Rodriguez.

Avril Lavigne had three broad goals in mind: "Be healthy, focus hard, make sure to see [my] family."

MTV's own "Jersey Shore" standout Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino said his plans involve moving from the small screen to the big one. "[I might be] doing maybe a movie or something," he teased.

Chart-topping pink princess Nicki Minaj offered the most colorful response: "[I'll be] touring around the world. It's looking like the biggest, baddest, I don't know ... I should've had something better to say," she began, and then invented a few words on the spot, for emphasis on just how big 2011 will be for the "Your Love" singer. "[I'm going to be the] biggest, baddest, boldest, booming-est, fearless-ocity-est, Pink Friday-est, girl," she promised.

Ryan Gosling Calls 'Blue Valentine' A 'Cautionary Tale' For Couples

'People can see the film and can see themselves in it or say, 'How do we keep that from happening?' ' he tells MTV News.

We already know Ryan Gosling thinks his latest film, "Blue Valentine," is a "nice companion piece" to his 2004 romantic drama "The Notebook." And this is despite "Valentine" having much darker, more sexually charged elements and some MPAA ratings drama.

But we wanted to know, given the film's edgier theme, is it detrimental or beneficial for a couple to see together?

"I think it's the best thing for a couple to see, honestly. I'm not just trying to sell the movie," Gosling insisted when MTV News caught up with him. "Well, I am trying to hawk the movie," he laughed, adding that he thinks it's good for couples to see and experience together, since it might prompt discussion or bring to light existing problems in a relationship that the couple could be trying to ignore.

"If there is a problem in their relationship, they're not able to look at it, and they're caught in their own experience of it, there's no dialogue about any of the bigger issues," Gosling explained. "I think ['Blue Valentine' is] a cautionary tale about what can happen to love if you ignore it and you take it for granted."

He went on to say that, because the film highlights the "nitty-gritty" of what it takes to sustain a romantic relationship, it will get couples talking.

"I think that people can see the film and can see themselves in it or say, 'How do we keep that from happening?' "

Check out everything we've got on "Blue Valentine."

Eminem, Jay-Z's Leaked Track 'Syllables' Was Recorded In 2007

Cashis, who is also featured on the cut, reveals the song was meant for one of Em's albums or Dr. Dre's forthcoming Detox.

Heads were scratched when a dated, top-notch collaboration between some of hip-hop's biggest MCs, including Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Stat Quo, surfaced in the blogosphere yesterday. And while deliberate (and unintentional) leaks happen all the time, it was odd that nobody had ever heard of the all-star cut titled "Syllables." However, Cashis, another one of the track's featured rappers, gave fans some insight into the track in an interview with Vibe.com, admitting his excitement as a then-newly-signed artist to collaborate alongside rap icons.

"I laid my part at Dre's studio with Stat, 50 and Em," Cashis recalls of the track, which talks of the industry's lack of lyrical substance and its reliance on gimmicks. "I heard that Jay had just left when I got there. Fif' was there kicking his verse in another room when I did mine."

But the MC, who had just been signed to Shady Records at the time, confessed that he wasn't nervous to spit alongside the hip-hop heavyweights. "I was more so excited than intimidated because I already had held my own with Em, and I think they believed in me this time. After I kicked my verse, Em, Dre and 50 all said it was dope. That was the cosign I needed. I learned more from that session than any other before that."

While Cashis isn't sure whether the "Syllables" leak was authorized by his label or not, the Slim Shady protégé says that the version that hit the Internet is different "and even better" than the one originally recorded in 2007. The tune was set to be featured on one of Eminem's LPs or Dr. Dre's highly anticipated Detox.

However, the rapper, who released his County Hound EP that same year, reveals that he's remained patient and hardworking while waiting for Eminem to sort through his personal trials in recent years.

"I ain't never left. My position is good over at Shady," the MC says. "Em pulled me to the side when he was coming back and told me the plan. He was going to get himself going again and then put me out. It got to a point where Em didn't want to rap anymore. But I told him to take as long as you want to take. For him to get inspired again is a blessing."

Teena Marie Autopsy Fails To Pinpoint Cause Of Death

Days after soul singer Teena Marie suddenly died, answers about her death remain in short supply.

According to The Associated Press, investigators said an autopsy turned up no signs of trauma or a discernible cause of death. Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Marie's cause of death may be determined by toxicology tests, the results of which would be available in around six weeks. No illegal drugs were found in a search of the singer's Pasadena home earlier this week, and the AP reports that police said Marie appeared to have died from natural causes.

Marie was found unresponsive in her home Sunday after she settled in for an afternoon nap. TMZ reported that Marie might have suffered a grand mal seizure while she slept, which may have contributed to her death. The songstress' publicist has also said Marie experienced a grand mal seizure a month ago, from which she was still recovering, and had since reportedly insisted on having someone nearby when she was sleeping.

According to Essence, Marie had suffered an additional seizure en route to the hospital after she sustained an attack last month. She was unable to secure an appointment with a neurologist for another three weeks and was prescribed medication in the interim. However, her publicist, Lynn Jeter, said the medication "made her suicidal," so Marie reduced the dosage.

Marie also opened up to Essence last year about her struggle with an addiction to prescription medication after the sudden 2004 death of her onetime musical mentor and paramour Rick James.

"After his death I became addicted to Vicodin, which I had been taking for my physical pain because I'd had a lot of accidents. Once I realized that those pills not only took away my physical agony by masking my emotional pain, I really became addicted. When I was on the medication I never cried about him, but then I went cold turkey and I cried so much and have been for the last three years," she said. "He was my musical soul mate. We were like an extension of each other. I miss all our talks. We were like family; only family can talk about family, not anyone else."

Khloe Kardashian, Lamar Odom Reality Show Coming

Fans might have thought they kept up with Khloé Kardashian before, but in 2011 they'll be seeing a whole lot more of her. The regular member of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," who ventured to Florida to "Take Miami" with her sister Kourtney, will be getting her own "Newlyweds"-style spin-off with her basketball-playing hubby, Lamar Odom, along the lines of Bravo's "Bethenny Getting Married."

"It shoots in the spring," an insider told Us Weekly. "They're so cute, playing off one another."

It seems as if the couple are waiting until after Odom's season with the Lakers is over to start filming the show. The two were married more than a year ago after dating for only a month, and "Kardashians" producer Ryan Seacrest said at the time he was "seriously thinking" about making a spin-off show for the newlyweds. Even though the marriage isn't really new anymore, there is plenty of interest around the Kardashian sisters' lives to warrant another spin-off.

After their marriage, Odom said their relationship was "real" and the ceremony was "a beautiful event." Shrugging off suggestions that he married a Kardashian to get more publicity, Odom said, "I don't need that. I get enough with the Lakers. I do well for myself."

He defended their hasty decision to get married, saying, "There's people who've been married for 25 years, and they get divorced. There's people who get married overnight, and the next thing you know they've been married 25 years."

Kourtney and Kim Kardashian have their own spin-off debuting on E! on January 23 called "Kourtney & Kim Take New York." Kourtney's son Mason won't be appearing on the show, though, because, according to Us, his father, Scott Disick, demanded E! pay $5,000 an episode for the 1-year-old, though Disick said it was because he wanted his son to have a "normal" life.

Just because Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon didn't make it as a married couple doesn't mean that they can't be happy for one another in their new romantic endeavors. Phillippe has come out publicly to express his well-wishes for Witherspoon and her new fiancé, Jim Toth.

"I'm very happy for both Reese and Jim," the "MacGruber" actor said in a statement to the New York Daily News on Thursday (December 30). "I wish nothing but the best for the mother of my children."

Phillippe and Witherspoon met in 1997 at Witherspoon's 21st-birthday party, where she reportedly told him, "I think you're my birthday present." The couple was married for seven years and divorced in 2007. They have two children together, Ava, 11, and Deacon, 7.

Phillippe told Men's Health last May that he was still sorting out his feelings from his relationship with and eventual divorce from Witherspoon.

"I still have sadness and complicated feelings about my divorce," he said. "But how beneficial is it to keep hanging onto those feelings? If someone lives through an accident, his aim is to become better and healthy. My aim is always to progress — to make better decisions and be a better father, a better boyfriend, a better husband if it happens again, a better friend, a better actor."

Phillippe is currently rumored to be to be dating "Letters to Juliet" actress Amanda Seyfried, and will next appear on the big screen alongside Matthew McConaughey in "The Lincoln Lawyer."

Kanye West's Unfinished 'Monster' Video Leaks Online

Gory video features Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, and images of decapitated women and zombies feasting on flesh.

The lyrics to Kanye West's all-star track "Monster" are full of dark images of bloodsuckers, dead hands, the devil, sarcophagi, ghouls, goblins, murder, fangs and Chucky from "Child's Play."

And though he's not often one to take such a literal path in the imagery that accompanies his songs, a leaked version of the unfinished video for West's "Monster" lives up to the gruesome, blood-drenched lyrical barbs served up in the song by Yeezy, Rick Ross, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj. The fuller version is in keeping with the gory glimpses seen in late November when a preview leaked online.

At press time, West had not commented on the leak, but online hip-hop communities were abuzz about the transgressive nature of the images in the five-minute clip. It opens with the disturbing sight of several woman in lingerie and high heels hanging from nooses around Ross as he sits on a throne and smokes a cigar, then switches to a scene of West being groped by the hands of unseen women reaching through a metal gate.

As he raps about "the best living or dead, hands down, huh?" West pops up shirtless on a bed with electric-blue sheets next to two hollow-eyed women in lingerie. They appear to be dead as he positions their limp arms around each other. What follows are scenes in which a woman in a designer dress drags a lifeless man's body across the floor and then draws blood as she steps on his chest with her spiked heels.

The clip, which borrows heavily from monster and horror movie tropes seen in such films as "Saw," "Night of the Living Dead" and "American Psycho," depicts Kanye in a mansion trying to hold back a horde of zombie attackers, dead women splayed out on dinner tables, a zombie couple feasting on a bloody corpse, glowing-eyed ghoulies crawling down halls, Jay-Z rapping in a crisp suit in front of a dead naked woman draped face-down on a leather couch, and West standing in cowboy gear while holding a woman's severed head.

Amidst all these graphic images of decapitated and dismembered female forms comes a scene in which Nicki, wearing black leather bondage gear and wielding a leather riding crop, engages in a psychological showdown with herself. She's seen riding herd over a hooded figure in a white wedding dress strapped to an executioner's chair, wielding a long, sharp sword. Once the hood is removed, it's clear that Minaj is confronting her pink-wigged Barbie alter ego as the two sides of her personality engage in a death match that swings from a lap dance to seeming threats of murder.

The flesh feast ends with glimpses of a female werewolf in black teddy and rocking bushy grey muttonchops dancing in front of a fire, West cuddling in bed with his deceased female companions and pale hands reaching out from behind a door.

No release date has been announced for the official version of the "Monster" video.

Michelle Williams Says She'll Watch 'Brokeback Mountain' With Daughter

Actress says Matilda will see the film in which her mother and father Heath Ledger co-starred 'when she's ready.'

Michelle Williams already told MTV News that she'll show her daughter Matilda her racy drama "Blue Valentine" someday, but that's not the only controversial film the actress thinks she'll be proud to show her child. In an interview with Angeleno magazine, Williams said that there will be a time in Matilda's future when she will sit down and show her daughter "Brokeback Mountain," a film that has a special place in Williams' heart.

"I will watch it with her, when she's ready," she said of the gay-cowboy film in which she co-starred with the late Heath Ledger, Matilda's father. "It is hard to imagine what that would feel like, but one day, yes, we will watch it together."

When describing why "Brokeback" was so important to their family, Williams said, "I was just an actor who happened to be lucky enough to be in the right place, and it was the place where I met Matilda's father, and that is a lot. It was a lot. And it will be a lot for Matilda too, when she gets around to watching it."

Matilda is only 5-years-old now, but Williams told MTV that she is excited for the day when she can share her work with her child. She described "Blue Valentine" as a movie she could "stand behind" and has been thinking a lot about what Matilda's reaction to her filmography will be.

"I feel like I'm excited for the day when she's old enough to see it, because my aim is to make her proud that the time I spent away from her wasn't in vain," she explained.

Williams recently opened up to the press about Ledger's death. Her ex-boyfriend was found dead in his apartment on January 22, 2008, at age 28. His death was attributed to an accidental overdose of a number of prescription medications.

"I've found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event itself still doesn't ... I can't find a meaning for it," Williams told ABC's "Nightline." "I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I can find a lot of meaning in that, but not in why."

The February 11 release of John Chu's 3-D doc "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" is fast approaching, and in addition to the Biebs' many tweets about the flick, we now have another glimpse at what it has in store for eager fans. A new clip from the film shows how Bieber's talent for drums surfaced at a young age. It's also full of more cute Bieber baby videos.

"He never had any lessons or anything. I just never thought of it being anything other than for fun," Bieber's mother, Pattie Malette, says in the clip.

Bieber's drum collection quickly expanded from a handheld drum to a mini drum kit, and eventually, his family friends held a benefit concert and raised enough money to buy the young prodigy his own set of Pearl drums.

The 16-year-old pop star made waves at the 2010 VMAs when he rocked out on the drums during his amplified set. He also showed off his skills on the skins at the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento, where he played an impressive drum solo during Cobra Starship's performance. Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, who had been trying to challenge Bieber to a dance off, tweeted after the fact, "Justin Bieber smoked me hard tonight. He couldn't win the dance off. But he shredded a gnarly drum solo. I back this kid on the real. Legit."

Bieber wouldn't be the first artist to start out behind the kit before his vocal capabilities propelled him to the spotlight. He joins the powerful ranks of drummers-turned-singers such as Dave Grohl, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Ringo Starr and Tommy Lee.

'Teen Mom' Star Amber Portwood Reunited With Baby Leah

Portwood still can't have contact with ex-fiancé Gary Shirley after domestic-violence arrest.
By Terri Schwartz

"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood's hope for the "no contact" order preventing her from seeing her daughter Leah to be lifted came true. Radar Online confirmed that a judge modified the initial order Wednesday so Portwood is able to have contact with her daughter, but she is still prevented from seeing ex-fiancé Gary Shirley.

Portwood has primary custody of Leah, but the "no contact" order was put into effect after she was arrested Monday over domestic-violence charges. She pleaded not guilty on Tuesday and was released on bail. Shirley kept baby Leah overnight Tuesday, but the Indiana Department of Child Services brought her back to Portwood's home Wednesday. If Portwood is convicted of any of the felonies for which she was arrested, she will lose custody of her daughter.

The charges stemmed from a September episode of "Teen Mom" that showed an altercation between Portwood and Shirley where she punched him in front of then-1-year-old Leah. Anderson, Indiana, police started investigating Portwood for domestic battery and child neglect and passed the case to the Madison County Prosecutor's Office, which issued the arrest warrant with three felony counts of domestic battery and one misdemeanor count of neglect of a dependent.

Child Protective Services have been strictly supervising Portwood since November. If they found her living situation to be unsuitable or felt that Leah was in any danger, she would be returned to her father's custody.

During the reunion episode after season two of "Teen Mom," 20-year-old Portwood opened up about the incident, saying, "I have no clue why I hurt Gary. I sort of do, but it's kind of beyond myself. I can't help myself. I have to get help and then help myself. I never notice how bad I am until I see it. And I feel so terrible. And it's like, did I really do that? The people who are around me, how do they feel? I don't remember it being that bad at the time. How did Gary feel? What the hell was I doing?"

How Katy Perry Avoided A Sophomore Slump

Critics weigh in on pop star's rise thanks to Teenage Dream.

In 2008, Katy Perry proclaimed she was One of the Boys, going around town kissing girls and "Waking Up in Vegas." Then two years later, Perry released her triumphant sophomore effort, Teenage Dream, a spirited mix of sugary love ballads and feisty anthems.

Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs.

While her contemporaries were busy rapping, like Ke$ha, or making grandiose political statements, like Lady Gaga, Perry just wanted to have fun. She wanted her fans to dance around in daisy dukes, and it paid off: She had a string of #1 hits including "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream" and her empowerment anthem "Firework."

So, when MTV News asked a few critics just what it is that helped solidify Perry's pop star status in 2010, they had this to say:

Perry looks like a pop star, but isn't as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, "She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess.

"What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist's growth, and I think that she's challenging. I think she's brash and bold."

Plus, over the course of the past 12 months, she's used that persona to sell herself and her music. "She's very good at the marketing side of things," Noah Callahan of Complex explained. "She has a very clear aesthetic. It's very digestible and understandable, and it doesn't hurt that she's very easy on the eyes."

Writer Julianne Esobado-Shepard credits Perry's kooky persona as one of the reasons why she's been so embraced by pop lovers.

"She's got hooks. Again, [her producer] Dr. Luke just kind of murdered it, especially with 'Teenage Dream,' " she said. "She's sort of a blank slate in a way. She's like an avatar of what people think they want, which is again like boobs. The fact that she likes shooting things out of her boobs so much has really gone a long way for her career."

Unlike the multitude of stars descending upon Las Vegas, Miami and New York City on Friday to celebrate New Year's Eve, there are a few who will be keeping a much lower profile as they ring in 2011. Like 2010 superstar Justin Bieber, for example, who said recently that his big plans consist of him getting some much-needed rest and spending time with his family.

"For New Year's, I'm just hanging out," Bieber told MTV News last week. "I'm just going to be with my family. Just being with them and relaxing, because I've been go, go, go for the past three years."

Judging from his recent tweets, the 16-year-old phenom is making good on his plans so far.

"Another solid day hanging with the family and friends. love the #holidays," he wrote on Monday. "New years is coming....what is gonna be your new years resolution?" Then yesterday, he tweeted a message focused on R&R: "Need the rest. #grateful."

The soon-to-be big-screen star (his film debut, "Never Say Never," opens in February) later commented that he's grateful for everything, from his success to all the rumors about his love life.

"Chillin and happy. It's been a fun year with a lot of blessings," Bieber wrote on Twitter. "Some crazy rumors but so much love and memories. We r just gettin started!! So enjoy the holidays. Get crazy and have some laughs. Life is too short. At least that is what they tell me. #newyearsIsComin"

What are your plans for New Year's Eve? Big blowout or low-key evening in? Tell us in the comments!

Uptempo pop-rock tune is reportedly lifted from singer's Teenage Dream recording sessions.

Just a few weeks ago, Katy Perry confessed that she was ready to take her relationship with Russell Brand to the next level by taking his last name. Despite the amorous stage in her life, the pop star appears strong, bold and just a tad resentful after a breakup on the previously unheard pop-rock song "Part of Me," which surfaced on the Internet on Wednesday.

With reported production by pop mastermind Dr. Luke, the song has Perry declaring herself unbreakable after an ugly breakup, singing, "Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade/ 'Cause you chewed me up and spit me out/ Like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my light, you drink me down/ That was then and this is now, now look at me."

Similar to the pop star's hit single "California Gurls," the tune's steady beat amplifies as the chorus opens. "This is the part of me/ That you're never gonna ever take away from me/ Throw your sticks in the stones/ Throw your palms in your clothes/ But you're not gonna break my soul/ This is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me," she sings.

"Part of Me" is rumored to be a leftover cut from the singer's Teenage Dream recording sessions. However, fans have speculated that the track may be included in a yet-to-be-confirmed re-release of the Grammy-nominated LP.

In addition to the new material, fans can rejoice in yet another Perry tune, "E.T.," as online reports have indicated that the futuristic song has been selected as the pop star's next single. Despite multiple live performances of the song, Perry took to Twitter to ask her legion of fans which track they'd like the singer to release next. "Thanks for all your great suggestions for the next single today!" she tweeted on December 13. "Your voice has been heard! We're on the same page..."

Michael Jackson Doctor To Claim Singer Killed Himself

Prosecutor thinks Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyers will say Jackson self-administered lethal dose of propofol.
By Gil Kaufman

More than 19 months after Michael Jackson's shocking death at the age of 50, the only person charged in the case, the singer's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, is due in court next week. And, according to a Reuters report, Murray's lawyers plan to defend Murray against a charge of involuntary manslaughter by claiming that the pop icon killed himself when he self-administered a large dose of propofol, a surgical anesthetic Jackson used as a sleep aid to combat chronic insomnia.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and has admitted to giving Jackson propofol. Murray's lawyers have said the physician did not administer any drugs that "should have" caused Jackson's death. The investigation into his death was lengthy, lasting more than eight months, after which Los Angeles prosecutors charged that Murray gave the King of Pop a lethal combination of propofol and other painkillers and sedatives in the hours before the singer was found dead in his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Reuters reported that in a Wednesday court session to discuss evidence in the case against Murray, Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said he thinks that the doctor's attorneys appear to be preparing a defense claiming that Jackson self-administered the lethal dose while Murray was out of the room.

Murray's attorney would not respond to questions about Walgren's statements. Murray's trial is slated to begin on January 4 with a preliminary hearing that will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to a full trial. Prosecutors and defense attorneys said they expect the preliminary hearing to take around two weeks.
