Matt And Kim Avoid 'Getting Too Musician-y' On Sidewalks

Brooklyn pop duo Matt and Kim have had a whirlwind year. They picked up a Breakthrough Video VMA in 2009 for their "Lessons Learned" clip; "Cameras," another track from their '09 album Grand, was featured in advertisements the world over; and they picked up enough fans along the way for the track to be certified gold.

So, when it came for them to record their latest album, Sidewalks, out Tuesday (November 2), the band celebrated for its do-it-yourself aesthetic tried to call on the same work ethic that had already won them numerous accolades.

"We did come up with a good phrase: 'What would Matt and Kim do?' " one half of the duo, Kim Schifino, recalled to MTV News.

" 'WWMKD,' " Matt Johnson added, "and any time we ended up getting too musician-y or too educated, we'd have to dumb it down," he laughed. "No, but there was something about the naive way we came at instrumentation — Kim not ever playing drums, me not playing keyboards — and it like, made you think more about the songs rather than trying to show off on a damn instrument."

Recording Sidewalks also afforded them the opportunity to bring in outside help — something they'd never done before.

"This was the first album where we worked with a producer, and we worked with Ben Allen, who had done a lot of things we like from Animal Collective to Gnarls Barkley to engineering Christina Aguilera and Biggie and all sorts of really different kinds of things," Johnson said.

Still, the pair came to occasional blows during the making of the album, though nothing that couldn't be alleviated with a bit of breathing room.

"Kim and I are so used to working on things, the two of us. [We] basically share the same brain. If you talk to one of us and the other one comes in, they're gonna tell you the same damn stories. All the same things. We shared a cell phone for five years! Never had to call each other! But so, there was some head-butting," Johnson explained.

And if you ask Matt, it was all worthwhile: "In the end, we made an album we're very happy with and whether there was some head-butting or whatnot, I think it added to the whole process."

Temper Trap Tap DJs For Conditions Remixed

Australian band recruits Alan Wilkis, Rollo, Sister Bliss, Peter, Bjorn and John and more for remixes, including 'Sweet Disposition,' on new LP.

In order to quench the thirst for new material, Australia's the Temper Trap released a new album of sorts on Tuesday (November 2). Conditions Remixed is a reworked version of their 2009 LP, Conditions, which was propelled by their smash single "Sweet Disposition."

The single itself was a bit of an anomaly. In an Internet age when most rock tunes fail to maintain their hold on the masses, "Sweet Disposition" generated the kind of attention only a few bands, like Kings of Leon ("Use Somebody") and Phoenix ("1901"), experience these days.

And if you ask the guys in the Temper Trap, they'll tell you they're equally surprised by the song's extended shelf life.

"I think that when we first wrote the song and recorded it, I don't think we ever expected it to last as long as it seems to have," guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto told MTV News before the band's acoustic gig at the 98.7 FM Penthouse at the historic Hollywood Tower‬. "I don't know how long ago we would have written it, probably almost three years ago. So yeah, to think that three years on and people are still discovering the song is quite amazing."

As the story goes with many of these unexpected hits, the song came by chance at the tail end of the band's songwriting process.

"It was kind of by accident. I came across the riff and I took it into the studio and these guys just came together pretty instantly when we started playing it," Sillitto explained. "And it was probably one of the shortest, like quickest, songs that we'd written on the album, so it was pretty special."

Now the specialness of "Sweet Disposition" has been given the remix treatment, along with other gems from Conditions. The idea came to the band after they heard (and liked) how producers and DJs were reinterpreting Temper Trap singles.

"We kind of pieced together from the ones that had been singles and kind of put the word out and [saw] who came back and had some lists of people that we wanted to work with," drummer Toby Dundas said. "You know there's people like Rollo and Sister Bliss from Faithless on there; Alan Wilkis, a New York guy, did a great remix of 'Sweet Disposition.' But the songs that kind of came up the most were kind of by more unknown people — a guy called BretonLABS out of South London; an American dude, Penguin Prison, who did a remix of 'Resurrection' — those are the two that really stand out for me.

For those dying to hear fresh material, beyond Conditions Remixed, the Temper Trap say they'll begin work on a new album in February, but they're already playing some spanking-new songs on the road. The band hopes to release the next album in late 2011. In the meantime, fans can listen to a full stream of Conditions Remixed on the group's website.

Why Should You Vote In Midterm Elections?

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 03:52 AM PDT

'We're in store for the biggest shift in congressional representation in a generation,' one pundit says.
By Gil Kaufman

Some see midterm elections as a referendum on the president's first two years; others as a way to restore some balance to Congress after one party has had its run of things for a while. And, if you're a follower of the upstart Tea Party movement, perhaps Tuesday's (November 2) elections are a chance to shake things up in Washington and give the boot to the good ol' boys in favor of some fresh blood.

Whatever your take, the final vote will have a huge impact on the legislation that passes through Congress over the next 24 months, and no matter which way you lean, pundits told MTV News voicing your opinion is key.

"What we're in store for, regardless of where you stand, is a historic election day ... the biggest shift in congressional representation in a generation," said Jordan Lieberman, 34, former editor of Campaigns & Elections magazine and current VP of Business Development for CampaignGrid, a company that does targeted online messaging for candidates and causes. "It's bigger than the 1994 election [when Republicans swept into power during the Clinton administration], and whether you're for or against, it's a strong motivator to show up."

If, as predicted, Republicans take anywhere from 45-60 seats in the House of Representatives, Lieberman said you will see a dramatically different direction in Congress, as well as a lot more compromise legislation coming out of the White House. What you won't likely see are any more massive programs like the Obama health-care plan or any major Social Security reform.

"It's important because ... the first half of the president's term is up for evaluation, so many members of Congress ... voters are evaluating them based on their votes," said Brian Morgenstern, 28, a consultant on a number of Republican campaigns in New York and former staffer for John McCain during his 2008 presidential bid. "It's sort of an indirect referendum on what Obama has done over the last two years."

As a general rule, whichever party the president is in tends to lose seats in midterm elections. It is rare for the White House and both chambers of Congress to be controlled by the same party as they are now — it has only happened 10 times since 1945 — and given early projections, President Obama is not likely to wield that control in the final two years of his first term.

"Generally, what the public sees is a new president sweeping into power, and if he has both houses of Congress, he has the ability to pass a lot of new legislation," said Morgenstern, alluding to the passage of the landmark health-care law, major new regulations of the financial industry, a bailout of the car industry and the economic stimulus bill.

"What's at stake this time is slowing down the president's agenda," Morgenstern added. "I think that's where you're seeing the Republicans go in their new movement to 'shrink' the size of government." In other words, instead of big, flashy legislation, you can expect more incremental changes and, possibly, some undoing of a few Obama policies.

The fear is that if Republicans do gain control of one or both houses of Congress, their goal will be to not work with Obama for the next two years in the hopes that he does not win re-election in 2012, explained Corey Johnson, 28, who works as the director of government affairs for a financial firm after putting in time as an Obama delegate in 2008 and on a number of campaigns for local and state government in New York.

While they didn't agree on much, both men said it's important for young voters to look closely at which party is proposing policies that will make it easier for them to get a job. Morgenstern thinks it's Republicans, because they are adamant about lowering taxes, which could help jump-start hiring.

"It's important, because the parties fundamentally disagree on a lot of issues," added Johnson. "It's important to engage in the process and to know that these issues are fundamental and that they affect everyone."

"Voting is not just for old people anymore," said Morgenstern. "Let's all get out there and tell our leaders what we think of them."

Justin Bieber has twice shown fans into his world, thanks to 2009's My World and the 2010 smash follow-up, My World 2.0. On November 22, the singer will do it again, unplugging for his third project, My Worlds Acoustic.

Fans got a taste of what Bieber's latest will sound like when the video for the acoustic version of "Never Say Never" premiered over the weekend, and it's clear he has a mission for this album: to prove he's a great singer.

"I really think that I did an acoustic album because there's a lot of haters out there that say, 'Justin Bieber can't sing. His voice is all Auto-Tuned,' " he told MTV News at an L.A. signing for his book "Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story." "And there's a lot with production, it kind of drowns out your voice, and it takes away from the singer, over the synths and everything."

My Worlds Acoustic will be a response to his critics, Justin explained. "I think kind of stripping it down and having it kind of really mellow and being able to hear my voice is why I wanted to do it."

While Bieber didn't want to reveal too much, he confirmed a brand-new track will be included on the LP.

"A lot of [the songs] from My World 2.0. 'Baby' was redone, and then we got an extra song on there that no one's ever heard, and it's a really inspiring song too. ... Can't really talk about that song yet."

Are you eager to hear a stripped-down Justin? Do you have any doubts he can really sing? Tell us in the comments!

Fans went a bit bonkers when they heard that besties Katy Perry and Rihanna might be collaborating for the latter's forthcoming new album, Loud. Rihanna confirmed that the pair have hit the studio to team up on some dazzling music but noted that it won't appear on her next album, due November 10.

"No, but we're actually working on some music together ... hell yeah," she told MTV News, adding that she'd also love to team up with the California Gurl on the road. "I would love to tour with Katy. She's a rock star. And when I see her live, she just brings such a fun [vibe], like a colorful rock star. She has all these [props]. She has candy and fruit and a blown-up ChapStick onstage, but then she's rocking out with a guitar and banging her head and swinging onstage and crowd-surfing. That's the sh-- that just makes you excited when you see her perform. She's beautiful, but then she rocks out."

Two other big-name acts do appear on Loud. Rihanna picked up where she and Eminem left off on "Love the Way You Lie" with a sequel to the hit song, and she and Drake trade flirty lines on "What's My Name?"

As for the Eminem collaboration, Rihanna admitted she was initially wary about trying to re-create the magic from the duo's first song together. "When I first heard the idea about doing a part two, I was just completely against it," she said. "I just felt like you couldn't beat the original. There's no way you can outdo that, so why compete with it?"

Demi Lovato has entered a treatment center, her rep confirmed to MTV News on Monday (November 1). The singer/actress has left her current tour with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment.

"Demi Lovato left her tour early this weekend in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time," her rep said in a statement. "Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that."

Lovato is currently in South America on the "Camp Rock" Tour with the JoBros. "[Demi] regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future," the statement continued.

According to TMZ, Lovato recently got into a physical altercation with a female on tour with her; that report was not confirmed by Lovato's rep.

On Saturday, the JoBros announced that they couldn't have a Web chat with their fans, tweeting, "Due to tour production issues that require our attention, we won't be able to do the webchat on Cambio today. We can't wait to talk to all our fans again. We love you." It is unclear whether the "tour production issues" were related to Lovato's exit.

Lovato also unexpectedly shut down her Twitter page over the weekend. Soon after, the hashtag #demicomeback was a Twitter trend, according to CNN.

T.I. turned himself over to authorities once again on Monday (November 1), as the Atlanta rapper is set to begin his second stint in prison in less than a year.

T.I. (real name: Clifford Harris) reported to the Forrest City federal facility to serve his 11-month sentence shortly before noon, according to The Associated Press.

The low-security prison is the same facility where T.I. served nine months last year after he secured a plea deal with Georgia prosecutors stemming from a 2007 gun case. The experimental deal required Tip to complete 1,500 hours of community service and endure home confinement in exchange for a lesser sentence; he was also required to complete a probation period afterward. The rapper was released in March after serving out the remainder of his time at a halfway house.

But last month, he and his wife, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, were arrested in Los Angeles for a driving violation and charged with drug possession after police checked their vehicle.

Los Angeles authorities eventually dropped the charges against the rapper, but documents filed by police suggested the rapper tested positive for opiates in his system, was with a convicted felon at the time of his arrest and was in possession of Ecstasy. All three accusations were violations of the rapper's strict supervised-release probation.

T.I.'s wife was charged in the case, and the rapper himself lost several endorsements, including with AXE and Remy Martin Cognac.

During his sentencing, T.I. asked the judge for leniency in his case and help with a drug dependency in lieu of jail time. However, Judge Charles Pannell, who authorized T.I.'s earlier plea deal, didn't comply with the request.

In support of the upcoming release of Pink's new album Greatest Hits ... So Far!!!, the spunky pop star is hard at work filming a video for the single "Raise Your Glass."

When MTV's "The Seven" caught up with Pink on the set of the new clip, she revealed new plot points in addition to the gay-wedding theme she talked about last month. The video will be her "celebration" for underdogs.

"I don't know if it's going to be huge, but it is new," she said of "Glass." "I did three new songs [for the album]. It was good timing. I had been on the road for two years and I hadn't written anything and I wanted to write a song about underdogs."

Pink said that she's far from perfect herself and has a soft spot for imperfections. "Whatever the case may be, there's nothing cooler than a pair of effed-up teeth or freckles," she said of different variations of beauty. "I like all the dirty stuff."

In the behind-the-scenes video shown on "The Seven," Pink talked about taking on a sumo wrestler in the clip. "The sumo wrestler represents Wall Street, the big banks," she explained. "It's the middle-class working family against 'the man.' Another psychotic scene."

Regarding the album's title, Pink said she chose the So Far phrase because she still has a lot of music to make. "I still feel like I'm 17. I'm just hitting my stride," she said of her adventurous spirit. "[I like to try] new things so I don't get bored. I'm 30 but can still hang better than most of them."

Pink's new album drops Nov. 16 and will include "Get the Party Started," "There You Go," "Don't Let Me Get Me," "Just Like a Pill," "Family Portrait," "Trouble," "Stupid Girls," "Who Knew," "U + Ur Hand" and "Dear Mr. President," as well as newer Pink tracks "So What," "Sober," "Please Don't Leave Me" and "Glitter in the Air."

'Saw' Trap Builder Recalls The Most Gruesome (And Funniest) Traps

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 08:01 AM PDT

'They probably unloaded enough blood for 10 human bodies,' Jason Ehl tells MTV News of one especially bloody death.
By Kara Warner

With a cool $24.2 million opening weekend, fans of the storied "Saw" franchise celebrated the final installment, "Saw 3D," by getting to theaters and making it the #1 movie at the box office. The final chapter topped "Saw VI," which earned a modest $14 million its opening weekend, but finished fifth overall in the franchise's opening records.

Given the fact that the seventh film is likely the last, MTV News sought out one of the unsung heroes of the "Saw" series — trap builder/ engineer extraordinaire Jason Ehl — to talk barrels of blood, reveal a few of his "greatest hits" and find out why three of the films' directors refer to him as a "mad scientist."

MTV: What was your filmography leading up to "Saw"?

Jason Ehl: It's funny, because the first year I did "Saw," I just came off of "Thomas the Tank Engine" and [TV's] "RoboCop." ... I came from family, sort of G-rated stuff, and then the very next day, you would be coming home and then having to clean all the blood off your clothes. It was a wacky mix of models and miniatures and all that kind of stuff ... [but there] was really nothing comparable to "Saw" before we started "Saw."

MTV: What intrigued you initially about the "Saw" films?

Ehl: I started on "Saw II," and there were two things I worked on: the puppets and the reverse bear trap. To be honest, I hadn't seen the first "Saw" movie. I just got a call from one of my regular clients about this kind of cool movie that's come to town and "Would you like to do a few things on it?" It was after that build that the intrigue started, because it was, with my engineering background, the best job you could ever expect. It's in the movie industry and you get to sort of make cool little machines. When I was a kid, I used to — do you remember Mouse Trap? I've never played a game of Mouse Trap, but I played with Mouse Trap ... so essentially, to me, "Saw" is like Mouse Trap.

MTV: How many calculations are involved in designing the traps and whether humans can survive them?

Ehl: On paper or on the books and stuff like that, all the traps kind of started like that. Like, if we refer to one of the movies that just came out, one of the more heavily engineered traps would be the very opening trap, and it started out as a single saw, and then based on the changes and story development, it turned into what you see on film. The reason why it was heavily engineered [was] to keep up with the schedule that had to be built when the change happened. You have to engineer on top of what already exists to make what we want to happen rather than just engineering on a flat paper starting from scratch. There's that, which I would say is the extreme case, and then there's when we're on sets, "Wouldn't it be great if this happened? And, by the way, it plays tomorrow morning." So paper and trying to calculate it doesn't fly, and it's a matter of going back to the shot at midnight and hoping something will make it happen.

MTV: What have been some of the most challenging or interesting traps to build?

Ehl: On the last one, we had some big ones, such as the rail car. The challenging part, a lot of the times, comes from a lot of the departments [working] independently, and then all their bits in the 11th hour have to come together and then hopefully work together. So that one was a bit of a challenge in the sense that I couldn't build everything in-house. We kept it there and then brought it to set and made it go. It was the matter of, this has to go to a trained yard and work with whatever is existing there. ... I would say the most challenging ones were when everyone and multiple departments have to come together and make it all happen in a short period of time.

MTV: Any other examples?

Ehl: Also in "Saw 3D," the throat-puncturing trap. That was me, prosthetics and the carpenters department. That one went through a lot of changes along the way. The only thing that you can count on, there will be a lot of changes, but the due date never changes. Everyone has to keep up with the due date and keep up with what everyone else is doing so that their thing locks into my thing, which works with someone else's thing. The most challenging thing to do — less from a mechanical point of view and more of a logistical point of view — when things are happening so quickly.

MTV: Are you ever surprised at what traps people come up with? Do you have a favorite?

Ehl: This last round, my favorite was probably that throat one, because it was an elegant setup. The mechanical bits were nice and simple, and it has a nice blend of some mechanical engineering, some electrical engineering. The other thing that I remember, back to traps and how pleasant they are and how hard they are, is just the time on set. The actor was great, took one for the team and would sit in the trap for hours and everyone was just pleasant and just moved along and got it done.

MTV: Are you surprised by how gruesome it gets, or are you so totally desensitized that the traps make you chuckle?

Ehl: [Laughs.] The triple saw trap at the beginning [of "Saw 3D"], the effects team had gone through three 5-gallon pails before we even got halfway through, and someone was like, "Do you know how much blood is in the human body?" We're at a few pints here and there. When you walked across the floor, everything was red and everyone's shoes. That's why I laugh, because all I remember is, our feet were sticking to the floor like you were in the oldest movie theater you have ever been in, and you stay too long and you're, like, glued to the floor.

MTV: So on that one, did you use more blood than is actually in the human body?

Ehl: Oh, yeah! Big time! On that one, that was for visual effects, and it was just crazy. They probably unloaded enough blood for 10 human bodies. One trap, the meat-scale one, one [actor] said he had to lay in his blood for a day, and he actually got glued to the floor. When we peeled him up, it peeled the paint off the floor. He was stuck there. [Laughs.] So that's how I see the "Saw" movies as far as scary. It's just stuff like that when you're on set and see an actor stuck to the floor.

MTV: How much do you pay attention to putting someone in a trap and having it work the way it's portrayed?

Ehl: The buildup of building the trap is a lot of that. I know [production designer] Tony [Ianni] would spend hours researching whether or not this would do what it's supposed to do. They would call in experts from whatever fields. Like when they were going to electrocute the person in the bathtub, they called in an electrical engineer and said, "Would this happen? And if it wouldn't, how would you recommend this should be?" Kind of so it would be realistic. Doctors, engineers, all that kind of stuff are referenced in. Just Internet galore, looking up references to industrial accidents and actual stats and things like on the blood amount to make things seem realistic. Like the one with the saw that we talked about was for sheer spectacle. The reality of that one was blown out of proportion.

MTV: What was the most painful or gruesome trap?

Ehl: The hair-pulling trap was pretty gruesome. When we're trying a fresh trap, I would go on the Internet and read what people like and would write. There was this thing with the best "Saw" traps ever, and the ones that people really chime in on are almost like the simplest ones, like the needle pit, which from a trap point of view is the simplest it gets. For the prop guys, there were thousands and thousands of needles that needed to be made, but really, it's the simplest concept. The trap where the lady put her arms in the glass closure and her wrist gets cut when she tries to get her wrists out. But the hair one, it was built simple. Just a whole bunch of spinning wheels and elements, and it was pretty gruesome.

Check out everything we've got on "Saw 3D."

Drake Teases Lil Wayne Concert Appearance

Lil Wayne has been locked up since March, but the superstar MC is expected to be released this Thursday from a New York prison.

His first public appearance after that?

Well, the final stop of Drake's Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour is November 6 in Las Vegas, two days after Wayne's scheduled release.

"I would just advise you to book a ticket out there. If you can get tickets to that show on the 6th, I would strongly advise it," Drake told MTV News about the possibility of reuniting with his mentor onstage.

Wayne is expected to travel to Miami upon his release and reunite with his family. The rapper is the father to four children, including offspring with actress Lauren London and singer Nivea. Bryan "Baby" Willams, the head of his label, Cash Money Records, has repeatedly insisted that Weezy will spend time with his family after being away from them for eight months.

"I think what's important, we want to see family first," the Birdman told MTV News last month when asked about a rumored Big Apple concert on the day of Wayne's release. "If the concert happens, it happens. But right now, we just want to come home and see our family and party, I think. That's what we gonna do: just come to Miami, and just party for a minute. Work and party and play. Have the whole team out here, and we gonna do it up. Miami is gonna be Weezy world. Weezy weekend."

Lil Wayne has managed to remain successful while away from the spotlight. He was named #7 on the 2010 Hottest MCs list, his album I Am Not A Human Being debuted at number one on the charts, and his Drake collaboration "Right Above It" currently rests at number 20 on the Billboard "Hot 100" chart.

It's "Welcome Home Weezy" week at MTV News. Check back every day for articles, updates, blog posts and more as we track the countdown to the Carter's homecoming. Stay tuned!

Justin Bieber premiered the mini-video for his song "Never Say Never" on Saturday during the World Series. The video features the unplugged version of the song, which will be included on his upcoming acoustic album, which drops November 22.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber at his book signing Sunday in Los Angeles, the singer said he wanted to make the video for the World Series because he's a big sports fan.

"For 'Never Say Never,' it's kind of like a really inspiring song, so I think that, you know, for people watching it, I guess it's really inspiring. I mean, I love sports," Bieber said, also reminding fans that he recorded "Never Say Never" for the "Karate Kid" soundtrack.

So who is Bieber rooting for in the World Series? "I was wearing a Rangers jacket, and then I was wearing a Giants hat, so, I mean, it was kind of like the idea of, like, 'I'm not cheering for you,' " he said of his outfit in the video. "I'm a Yankees fan, so it's like I was kind of making both teams happy."

Lasting one minute and 24 seconds, the clip gives fans a taste of what Bieber's forthcoming acoustic album will sound like.

The clip, which debuted during Game 3 of the World Series, features footage of Bieber singing from the baseball diamond cut with shots of players hitting balls and hanging out in the dugout. The video shows Bieber playing some acoustic guitar as well. In the end, Bieber walks off the field, bat and guitar in hand.

Oprah Winfrey is closing out her long-running talk show's final season with a bang. So far, Winfrey has scored hard-to-get interviews with the likes of "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, featured a much sought-after reunion of the cast of "The Sound of Music" and on November 8 will dedicate a full hour to a Jackson family tell-all special.

According to The Associated Press, Winfrey recently visited the Jackson family home in Encino, California, for an extensive sit-down with matriarch Katherine Jackson. A rep for Harpo Productions confirmed the air date for next Monday with MTV News. Jackson's father, Joe, as well as his three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, will also appear during a "backyard visit" taped for the episode. Katherine will reportedly discuss the day her son died and reflect on his life as a child star.

Gossip website X17 Online reported that it is still unclear how many other members of the family will be featured, but that several relatives, including Randy Jackson, were not informed about the interviews so as to avoid any possible confrontations.

The site also reported that the show's producers are still trying to secure an interview with the mother of two of Jackson's children, Debbie Rowe. Other topics that may be addressed during the one-hour special include Katherine's wrongful death civil lawsuit against promoter AEG and the family's legal woes with Michael's estate.

The rep for Harpo did not comment on attempts to secure an interview with Rowe, but said there were no plans to extend the one-hour episode into two shows.

The MTV Europe Music Awards are always a rather epic time (we're still recovering from last year in Berlin ... those Kaulitz brothers definitely know how to party), and with the 2010 EMAs set to take over Madrid on Sunday, we decided that we had to go back — and we've got the perfect guy to lead us.

AT&T and MTV News are teaming up to send Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta to Madrid to cover the 2010 EMAs. In addition to being a totally sweet bro who loves to party (and who somehow gets mentioned in the same article as Bill Clinton), Saporta, who's Uruguayan, also speaks Spanish. It's a pretty big deal ... we even got him one of those old-school fedoras with the little "press" tag tucked into the hatband and everything.

In the days leading up to the big show, he'll be darting across Spain's capital city, checking out the biggest and baddest EMA pre-parties and talking to some of your favorite artists: EMA performers include Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, B.o.B and Hayley Williams, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars and the Kings of Leon. And then, during the EMAs, he'll be holding down MTV News' spot on the red carpet, too. It's a big job, but we're confident Gabe can handle it. He's a professional, after all.

Starting on Wednesday — and continuing throughout the weekend — you can follow Saporta's updates from Madrid on his Twitter page.

The 2010 EMAs will air on MTV2 on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

It's been a tough week for Charlie Sheen. On Tuesday, the 45-year-old actor was hospitalized after an "adverse" reaction to prescription medication. And on Monday (November 1), the "Two and a Half Men" star and wife Brooke Mueller filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences."

Back in May, Sheen and Mueller signed a 43-page settlement that divided all their assets and settled a child custody agreement. According to documents obtained by TMZ, the couple are seeking joint custody of their twins, Bob and Max.

In addition to physical custody, Mueller will receive $55,000 a month in child support. That monetary sum must be no less than the amount of support he is obliged to pay for his children with ex-wife Denise Richards, as the document reads, "Under no circumstances shall the child support paid by Charlie for Bob and Max be less than the child support paid by Charlie to Denise Richards for Sam and Lola."

The couple, who married in May 2008, have experienced their share of trouble, including a domestic dispute over Christmas at their home in Aspen, Colorado. Sheen had reportedly threatened Mueller with a knife and was charged with misdemeanor third-degree assault as a result of a plea deal. He later entered rehab "as a preventative measure," according to a statement issued by his publicist.

Wearing a slate-gray girly dress and suede, nude booties, Taylor Swift kicked off her Monday (November 1) appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show with a rocking performance of her fan favorite "You Belong With Me," from 2009's Fearless.

Later on, during her sit-down with the host, she changed into a ladylike black-lace dress and was grilled all about her love life, past and present. The Speak Now singer tried her best to dodge questions about her beaus, instead focusing on her album. "It took two years to make this album, and at some point in the process, I made the conscious decision to write it by myself," she said. "And then a little more than halfway through, I was like, 'I can do this by myself really, maybe.'

"With this album, it's been such an emotional process," she continued. "I'd have nightmares in the middle of the night that Rolling Stone hated it. I was really nervous about it, because taking this on, you're taking a lot of ownership of whether people like it or don't."

As for the song "Dear John," Swift wouldn't confirm or deny rumors that it's about John Mayer. "It seems to be the pattern, yeah," she said of writing about boys. "It could be [a 'Dear John' song]. That song kind of is what it is." Swift said she always wanted to be the same songwriter, and she won't change, despite all the speculation. Her plan? "To continue to never tell" who songs are about.

DeGeneres even asked about those Jake Gyllenhaal dating rumors. "What?" she laughed when asked who she might write a song about now and DeGeneres posted a picture of Swift with Gyllenhaal. "I'm always optimistic about love. Yes, always, sometimes."

They eventually moved on from the subject, capping off the interview by talking about Swift's new apartment. "It's been wonderful," she said. " ... [It's] become a privilege to hang out with my parents."

Swift wrapped up her time on the show with a solo acoustic performance of her latest single, "Mine."

Portia De Rossi Opens Up About Eating Disorder On 'Oprah'

Actress says it was 'cathartic' for her to write 'Unbearable Lightness' memoir.

Hollywood can take a turn for the dangerous, and Portia de Rossi knows the downside all too well. On Monday (November 1), the 37-year-old actress appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to promote her new memoir, "Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain," which chronicles, among other topics, her struggle with an eating disorder.

Reading a portion of the book, de Rossi gave viewers a glimpse into her tale by recalling her early memories of when she began to binge and purge.

"It was very cathartic for me to write," she said of the memoir. "It was very difficult for me to write. There were a lot of tears shed on that keyboard."

The Australia native opened up about how desperate she was to be thin, admitting, "I remember starting that diet, thinking ... 'I'd rather die than fail another diet.' "

The actress also detailed some of her lowest lows, including a 300-calorie-per-day diet that led her to weigh a staggering 82 pounds. "It wasn't that I was proud of it, but it was certainly a recognition for my self-control. I definitely had some pretty amazing will power to get down to 82 pounds. And that's what I was holding on to. I didn't think about anything else."

De Rossi told the host that she got a wake-up call from her brother after eating Christmas dinner with her family one year. "He broke down. I'd never really seen him cry before, and he just said to me, 'You're going to die,' " she recalled. "It was the first time that I ... it just woke me up. It was the thing that led to me thinking about getting better."

The actress said that, shortly after her brother's plea, she collapsed on the set of a movie and was later told by doctors that many of her organs were close to failing. In a pre-taped video segment, Ellen DeGeneres spoke about her wife's personal struggle.

"I look at her and just think, 'How did you not know how amazing you were?' It's heartbreaking. I didn't know that person. I met her after she had gone through that. I knew she had suffered with eating disorders, but nobody really sees the ugly, deep, dark places that she takes you in that book," she said.

Fortunately, the actress is now past her dark days with DeGeneres by her side. The actress took Oprah viewers inside her personal ranch, where she revealed that her focus on horses and nature brought her new insight and put less emphasis on her appearance.

Will 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Be A Midterm Elections Issue?

'If the Republicans do take over either branch, it's dead,' one young Democrat says of a potential 'don't ask' repeal.

It's a mantra you've heard from both Democrats and Republicans relentlessly in the lead-up to Tuesday's critical midterm elections: It's all about jobs.

And while the economy is likely the issue foremost on everyone's minds, there are certainly many young, LGBT voters who will tell you that the Obama administration's failure to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy will also be on their minds when they cast their votes on Tuesday.

Just weeks after the Department of Justice requested a stay on a California judge's ruling that would have effectively ended the 17-year-old policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly, Tuesday's vote could turn out to be a referendum of sorts on the Obama administration's handling of the issue, according to political experts.

"In terms of this election, I don't think that a whole lot is going to happen in terms of the political branches, no matter which party takes over. I think it's being fought in the courts," said Republican Brian Morgenstern, 28, who admitted to having a more liberal view on DADT than many in his party. Morgenstern — a former teenage congressional page who has interned with a Congressman and worked for the congressional committee and John McCain's 2008 presidential bid — has been consulting for a number of New York Republican campaigns this year.

The contrast on the issue between the parties could not be starker, said Democrat Corey Johnson, also 28, who noted that his party's House members helped pass legislation repealing DADT as Dems in the Senate attempted to do the same before being thwarted by a Republican filibuster in September.

"If the Republicans do take over either branch, it's dead," said Johnson, who has been active in Democratic politics for more than a decade on gubernatorial and presidential campaigns and who now works as director of government affairs for a financial firm. "There will be no legislative repeal that will move forward."

Johnson argued that the DADT repeal should not be a partisan issue at all, since it has resulted in the military discharging badly needed Arab linguists, medical professionals, military police and combat officers. But for some voters, many of whom are among the electorate that helped sweep President Obama into office on the promise of change on DADT and more openness in government, the existing policy may make the difference on Tuesday.

Unlike previous elections, where social issues such as gay marriage and abortion have taken prominence, in 2010, those topics have been forced into the backseat due to the economic crisis. In fact, one campaign consultant told MTV News that of the 2 million pieces of e-mail he's sent out over the last two months and the more than 1 billion online impressions he's logged for Republican candidates, there have been little or no blasts related to social issues.

"For young people, jobs and the economy are critical issues because things like the national debt and taxes are becoming increasingly important as young people realize how those issues will affect them in the long-term very directly," said Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Fordham University and executive editor of Campaigns & Elections, a bipartisan trade publication for the political consulting industry.

"Though Democrats have delivered on a number of things they promised, they've failed to deliver on other key things ... and [some voters] have come to distrust President Obama and question those other achievements and their importance," Panagopoulos said. "His failure to execute leadership on 'don't ask' is one of them. That is weaved into a broader narrative of Obama's failure to exercise leadership on a range of issues and it's feeding into a negative perception overall. It all boils down to giving the public a sense of what kind of person they want in the White House."

How divisive is DADT? Morgenstern said it has not only driven a wedge between the parties, but even created a bit of a division between older and younger Republicans. Like the overall generational divide, he said younger GOP members tend to have more Libertarian, accepting views on social issues such as DADT, while an older generation is focused on concerns about troop morale and security risks.

"I'm happy that this is an issue," Johnson said. "I think that, for younger folks that maybe consider themselves Republicans, gay and lesbian issues are a no-brainer for them ... and it should be. It's a matter of basic fairness and equal rights and I think it's an issue as younger people gain more power ... it's a matter of time."

Will the issue of "don't ask, don't tell" bring you to the polls on Tuesday? Let us know in the comments.

Forget trick-or-treating: Justin Bieber's army of dedicated fans gathered in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon to meet Bieber and have him sign copies of his book, "Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story". So what was it like for those who got to come face-to-face with their teen dream? MTV News found out!

"He was, like, so amazing, and he's wearing the most adorable thing ever," Amber Culwell gushed. "And I got to give him the hat I bought him, and we gave him candy and a note."

Apparently there were lots of hugs doled out at the book signing.

Audrey Altman added, "We went up to him, and I was like, 'Hi, can I have a hug?' and then he grabbed my hand, put his arms around me and was like, 'Of course!' "

Daisey Nicholas had an equally exciting encounter with the star. "I went up and I was really excited," she said. "What happened is I went up and I put my arm around him and he said 'hi' to me."

Another Belieber, Allie Tamonzian, was still super-buzzed from the encounter when she spoke to MTV News. "It was amazing," she said. "It went so fast, though. I wish I could talk to him more, but I got a hug out of it."

Sofia Nunez recalled, "We took a picture with him. My favorite part [of the book] is when he talks about his family because I feel like family is important, and to him it's important, too. And he hasn't changed since he was that small-town kid, and now he's this big superstar and he's still the same."

Other Bieber fans were also eager to share their favorite parts of the book. "I'm just really shocked right now. I'm just so happy," Sabine Rutten said. "I just like how you can tell he wrote it. I love the pictures, but he also talks about his family and his background. I felt like I knew him."

'Jersey Shore' Star Angelina Is 'Happy' She Did Season Two

'To be honest with you, I would be fine with being their friend,' Angelina tells MTV News of 'Shore' castmates.

During the first season of "Jersey Shore," Angelina Pivarnick made an abrupt and early exit from the hard-partying reality show. Angelina returned for the show's second season, in Miami, but unfortunately things didn't pan out much better for the Staten Island native. Nonetheless, she has no regrets.

"I'm the type of person, I can never live in regret," the reality star told MTV News last week. "I did what I did. I went back on the second season. I'm happy I went back."

Angelina, who chose to leave the gang behind after nonstop bickering with her roommates, said she's moved on now and wants to make peace with the crew.

"If I ran into one of them, I wouldn't be mean. I wouldn't say anything wrong, like anything nasty to them. I want to be an adult basically so I would just say, 'You know what? Let's put this all behind us,' " she explained. "To be honest with you, I would be fine with being their friend. I'm really not a bad person. I mean, obviously, if I've had friends since I was 2 years old and they're still in my life and I'm 24 years old, [then] I have to be actually a decent person."

During the course of season two, Angelina landed a drunken slap on Pauly D and got into a massive fight with Snooki, but Angelina said she initially wanted "to come together and have this big discussion" in order to make amends with her "Shore" co-stars. But with the entire cast pitted against her from the start, according to Angelina, she never got the chance.

Pivarnick explained that viewers also never got the chance to see her trying to make good with her castmates by helping out around the house in Miami.

"They didn't show me cleaning the house after the Jenni and Sammi fight. I cleaned the whole entire kitchen. I swept the floor. I cleaned the dishes. They didn't show any of that. They basically didn't show any of me being neat or anything like that. It was always me being a mess."

From Bieber to Britney, celebrity fragrances are just part of the fame game, and Taylor Swift wants in. The country/pop star, who is set to make Billboard history with first-week sales of Speak Now, is ready to fill a spot on department store shelves with her debut fragrance. It was announced Monday (November 1) that the 20-year-old has inked a deal with Elizabeth Arden to develop her own line of products.

According to a press release, Swift's first fragrance will debut in fall 2011 and be available at North American retailers. It also says the songstress will be involved in various stages of the scent's creation, including product development, packaging and advertising.

Never afraid to incorporate her personal experiences and memories into her songs, the singer reveals she loves how a particular aroma can spark immediate nostalgia.

"I have always loved how fragrance can shape a memory, the way certain scents remind you of events and people that are imprinted in your thoughts," Swift says in the release. "Lately I've been having fun experimenting with combining some of my favorite scents, so I'm really excited about working with Elizabeth Arden to develop my own unique fragrance."

Ronald Rolleston, executive vice president of Elizabeth Arden, says the company's enthusiasm toward its partnership with Swift is credited not only to the singer's critical acclaims, but also to her status as a role model.

"Her rise to superstardom has been meteoric, and her multiple awards and incredible record sales are a testament to her extraordinary talent," he explains. "Equally important to us is what Taylor represents as an artist: a role model who inspires her global fan base every day. We look forward to launching a new fragrance brand that reflects every facet of this extremely talented young artist."

Elizabeth Arden also has developed fragrances with Britney Spears and Mariah Carey.
