Fat Joe Says <i>Darkside, Vol. 1</i> Establishes Him As 'One Of The Greats'

'Who you know, 10 albums later, get better than he's ever been before?' Joey Crack asks Mixtape Daily.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Independent Album: The Darkside, Vol. 1

Headliner: Fat Joe

Key Cameos: The Clipse and Cam'ron on "Kilo"; R. Kelly on "How Did We Get Here"; and Lil Wayne on "Heavenly Father."

Essential Info: When Fat Joe says that this is just the first volume of The Darkside, the Bronx veteran means it. He's already started recording the follow-up to the LP, which officially dropped Tuesday (July 27).

"The Darkside, Vol. 2, we already started the intro," Joe said with a grin when he stopped by 1515 headquarters recently. "We're just trying to make The Darkside its own brand. It's Fat Joe, but it's The Darkside. We come with Vol. 2, make it crazier than Vol. 1, by the time Vol. 3 come, we got a problem on our hands.

"Your man Raekwon, without a radio single, banged out numbers on that Purple Tape [a.k.a. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt. II] because that was already an established classic. It was a brand itself. People knew 'I gotta hear that next album.' "

While the second offering probably won't be out until February, Joe's current effort, which marks his 10th LP, still has plenty of legs.

"I'm excited about this album. I can't wait 'til the fans get it," Joe said." We locked ourselves in the studio for like eight, nine months: wasn't going out, just concentrating on music. I feel like this album is finally where people can hear it and be like, 'He's one of the greats.' Who you know, 10 albums later, get better than he's ever been before? It's hard. To come from all this huge success like a 'What's Love,' and a 'Lean Back,' then take it back to the street with The Darkside.

Joe said that his friends, producers Cool & Dre, were two of the people who inspired this project. The production duo believed the Bronx MC had missed the mark with 2009's Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.) 2 and wanted to hear an album of just hardcore Joey Crack music. He recorded the album in their Lake Oasis studio in Miami.

"They was like, 'Joe, you the boss, man. We need you to be on top. We need you to be hot. If you not hot, nobody's hot, ' " Crack detailed. "They felt like, 'Yo Joe, when I first met you, when we was doing the J.O.S.E. album and [2002's] Loyalty, Joe Crack was from the Bronx, he was hard, we couldn't tell him nothing.' They wanted that back; so did some of the blogs. My fans kept on me like, 'Joe, we love you, we gonna support you. But we need that Fat Joe the Gangsta.' "

Joe jumped in the lab, not only with Cool & Dre, but also the likes of Just Blaze, DJ Premier and newcomer Scoop DeVille to bring him those gutter soundscapes.

"I turn around sometimes and I see you-know-who and other rappers say, 'Fat Joe is dead,' " the veteran MC began. "I say, 'If I'm dead and I come with the first single, 'Ha Ha' with Young Jeezy, the hottest rapper in the 'hood. Then I come with Trey Songz, the hottest R&B artist [on 'If It Ain't About Money']. What's gonna happen when I'm alive?' It's so crazy to me."

One of the tracks to strike a big chord with fans is "I'm Gone." The song from Vol. 1is a tribute to Gangstarr's Guru and was produced by Premier. At the end, Joe speaks for several minutes about the late MC's career.

"It feels like Gangstarr is the purest group in hip-hop," Joe declared. "They was shooting videos on the beach in the winter when the water was ice. Razor-blade music. A bunch of guys in front of the project steps. 'Mass Appeal,' 'Dwyck.' 'Stick up kids just out to tax ... ' It's just so much, man. When [Guru] passed, and I'm hearing all these rumors, I just wanna kill everybody. I want to shoot the computer, 'cause I'm like, 'No, this ain't what we do when our legends, our icons, pass. We salute them. We don't go for rumors; we salute these dudes.' He was an icon, man. It's the purest group in hip-hop, in my opinion. DJ Premier, this guy is like a god, a walking god. Guru, he put it down legendary.

"Preemo, I was waiting for Preemo to give me a 'Ten Crack Commandments' or a shoot 'em up, bang bang," he continued, recalling his expectations when he got the track for "I'm Gone." "He sent me the beat when Guru died — the day Guru died. It was a somber ... sad beat. I was like, 'Ah, man.' I knew where to go with it. It really troubled me and I knew Guru passed away. I knew Preemo was hurting; I been through that with Pun. I knew how it felt. I had to pay homage and salute."

Tuesday night at S.O.B.'s in New York, Joe is celebrating his 10th with RapRadar.com, fans and several surprise guests. He'll be leaving the singles at home, instead performing all of his street hits and of course records from The Darkside.

"My favorite song on my album is 'Valley of Death,' produced by Cool & Dre. We gonna go to the desert and shoot that video. It's a record for the streets. It's a record I could have saw Game doing, saw Kanye doing, something with that real soulful sample. Then I'm talking that 'ish,' legendary. I love the Just Blaze [track, I'm Crack]. It's a lot of sick records on the album. Of course Scoop DeVille, 'No Problems,' that's gonna paralyze the city when we drop that. We got some gems on the album."

Other Heat This Week Killer Kyleon's Natural Born Killa. DJ White Owl's Whiteowl Drop That 129. DJ Cali: Lil' Boosie: Bad Ass Thug DJ Just Dizle's Redman: Whut The Mix. Swazy Baby's The Future of Hip-Hop.

'Jersey Shore': Enrique Iglesias, Pete Wentz On What They Want For Season Two!

It's only a matter of days before Snooki, The Situation and the entire "Jersey Shore" crew are seen taking their antics to Miami for the second season of their hit MTV series. So, with the new season kicking off on Thursday at 10 p.m., some of the show's many celebrity fans shared what they'd like to see this time around.

"I want to see the fights. I want to see the drama. I want to see the chaos," Enrique Iglesias, who recorded "I Like It," the hit single from the Jersey Shore Soundtrack, told MTV News. "I grew up in Miami, so it's going to be fun to watch the show."

While The Situation has gained many female fans thanks to his famous abs (and charm!), one of the show's fans hopes that this season he gains a few pounds. "I want them to gain weight, so I feel a lot better about myself," musician/songwriter Philip Lawrence, who is featured with B.o.B and Bruno Mars on "Nothin' on You" and has written songs for Melanie Fiona and Travis McCoy, joked. "Eventually in my life I want to take off my shirt again. You 'Jersey Shore,' stop! Quit doing the abs!"

Before season two kicks off, Christina Applegate may want to learn about the characters: She recalled her confusion over the cast's usage of nicknames. "I kept calling the one guy 'The Revelation' the other day," she recalled. "I couldn't remember what his name was, but my sister said to me, like, nine times, 'It's The Situation. And I'm like, 'I don't know! What's the situation?' "

Pete Wentz makes an interesting point: in season two these people are actually famous, unlike when they shot season one. "It'll be interesting to see those people now that they're famous because before they weren't famous," he said. "I feel like that's an interesting thing to introduce into the mix."

However, leave it to Kathy Griffin to come up with the most interesting thing she'd like to see happen this season.

"I noticed that Snooki's Bumpit [hairstyle] was a little lower and frankly I don't like that," she joked. "I want to see them Bumpit higher than ever and I want to see her, when she gets into her bar fights, actually just Bumpit somebody out of the way!"

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

Is Ryan Reynolds Getting Greedy With The Superhero Genre?

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 04:48 AM PDT

With upcoming turns in 'Green Lantern' and 'Deadpool,' Reynolds doesn't think he's latched on to too many comic book properties just yet.

Many aspiring actors work through their entire careers without ever once diving into the superhero pool — which is why it's particularly unusual that actor Ryan Reynolds is playing superheroes in two upcoming films.

Reynolds is currently in the midst of wrapping up filming on "Green Lantern," director Martin Campbell's adaptation of the beloved DC Comics icon. But despite his upcoming appearance as the brave star-spanning Hal Jordan, Reynolds is equally well known for his brief but memorable turn as mutant mercenary Wade Wilson in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Little more than a cameo, Reynolds' work as Wade is set to expand in a planned "Deadpool" spin-off film from 20th Century Fox.

Given the two roles — polar opposite though they may be — one could make the assumption that Reynolds is getting a little bit greedy when it comes to the superhero genre. But when MTV News pointed out that notion to the actor at last week's Comic-Con in San Diego, Reynolds was quick to get on the defensive.

"First off, Deadpool is not a superhero and he would stab you in the thorax if he heard you say that," Reynolds said, adding with a laugh, "I don't think I've ever said anything geekier than that in my entire life."

Reynolds' second line of defense was a bit more practical. "I've only played Deadpool for four and a half minutes thus far," he said, acknowledging that the character's spin-off movie is currently in the planning stage. "When we're talking down the line and we're talking about the 'Deadpool' movie, at that point you can call me a greedy bastard."

For now, Reynolds is more than content playing the ace fighter pilot turned superhero in "Green Lantern" — and even off-camera, the actor is nothing short of a hero for his young fans, thanks to his decision to recite the "Green Lantern" oath for a young fan at Comic-Con.

Heidi Montag Pulls Out Of Reality Show With Ex-'Hills' Co-Star

'I don't know if Heidi wants to be involved in reality TV at the moment,' Jen Bunney blogs, citing Montag's 'personal' issues.

It looks like there won't be a Jen and Heidi show, after all.

Jen Bunney, the current bestie to Heidi Montag (and onetime friend of "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad) recently updated her blog and revealed that she and Montag would no longer be co-starring in a reality show together. The proposed TV series would have been a follow-up for the "Hills" alums, whose hit MTV show ended earlier this month.

"Originally I was supposed to do a reality show with Heidi, but right now it looks like some things have changed," Bunney wrote on her site in response to queries from fans. "I don't know if Heidi wants to be involved in reality TV at the moment with everything going on in her personal life (no we are not in a fight, and no Heidi is not 'dropping' me to do reality shows with the twins)."

Montag, 24, has been separated from her husband, Spencer Pratt, since earlier this summer. It has been reported that Montag was shopping around "The Heidi Show" with Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriends (and former "The Girls Next Door" co-stars), twin sisters Kristina and Karissa Shannon.

But Bunney still wants to move forward with a show and has been going to production meetings in the past few weeks. The show, she claimed, will air in January.

"I was actually surprised that this happened, considering my name is not one that has been plastered across every tabloid the past few years, but I am super excited," Bunney continued. "I suppose the buzz from the original show with Heidi garnered enough interest and publicity and enough about me as an individual that several networks are interested in still pursuing it despite Heidi's absence. So that's the news for now!"

Soulja Boy Tell'em is basking in the success of yet another hit in "Pretty Boy Swag." But the young superstar is still keeping his promise to deliver more lyrically inclined numbers.

The "Crank Dat" rapper is prepping the second single from his forthcoming The DeAndre Way album, "Speakers Going Hammer," produced by Drake collaborator Boi-1da. And according to Soulja Boy, the song will show off his improving rhyme skills.

"Basically, it's all about the sound of the music," SB told MTV News about the track. "I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars, another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it's another hit."

Earlier this year, the teen rapper told MTV News he's earned the respect of some of his older peers with his new material. Soulja Boy said Kanye West has become one of his biggest supporters. The two reportedly worked together on a number of tracks for West's next effort. During their studio sessions, SB played the Chicago star some of his records and the result was surprising.

"When I was in the studio, I played him a couple of joints, and then he just said, 'Damn, he's really starting to go hard,' " Soulja Boy explained. "And I was like, 'Yeah, you feel me?' ... Out of all the artists to get the go-ahead or the co-sign from, it was Kanye.

"Me working with him, collaborating on different beats," he continued, "him showing me a lot of stuff I didn't know. Me showing him a lot of stuff he didn't know. He had an ear for my sound. Of course I had an ear for all the stuff he did. Genius! You know what I mean?"

Are you excited to hear a more lyrical Soulja Boy? What did you think of "Pretty Boy Swag"? Tell us in the comments!

Captain America Remains 'Little Steve Through And Through,' Chris Evans Says

In "Captain America: The First Avenger," not only will Steve Rogers' suit and shield go through a few transformations, the man behind Captain America will have to transform from scrappy wannabe soldier to full-fledged action hero. And the movie's star, Chris Evans, says that the studio has figured out the perfect way to do it, using technology to shrink him down to play the smaller than Captain America-sized Steve.

"They got some great stuff going on right now. Initially they were going to do all body replacement — hire another actor completely and have this skinny body do the scene and do face replacement," Evans told MTV News at Comic-Con in San Diego. "But I guess the first couple tests weren't what they were hoping it would be, and then they decided to go with just shrinking me down. They did a couple tests. It looks fantastic and it's really going to be a big transition."

While Evans will eventually end up playing a beefier hero by the film's end, he hopes that when fans watch the flick, they still can relate to the skinny young man Captain America once was. "It's absolutely one character," he explained. "I think he's little Steve through and through, even after he goes through the transformation. I think you want the audience, even in the final frame of the film, to look at him and see the little guy.

"That's what I think is endearing," he added. "That's why I think it's great, it's an origin story. You get to understand how he has come to appreciate the gift he's been given."

Wiz Khalifa Thanks Fans For His 'Hottest Breakthrough MCs' Victory

'It's a great thing to be recognized on that level,' Wiz tells MTV News.
By Steven Roberts

Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Gang is one dedicated group of fans: Their votes helped to catapult Wiz to the top of MTV News' poll to make him 2010's "Hottest Breakthrough MC." Numerically, Wiz crushed his competition, garnering more than 66,000 voted, nearly 30,000 more than Young Money MC Nicki Minaj, who came in second place.

Wiz himself is quick to acknowledge their efforts. Over the weekend, MTV News caught up with Wiz at his crib in Pittsburgh, where he watched MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" with friends and family, and he explained he owed all his success to his fans.

"It's a great thing to be recognized on that level, and really just by my fans," said Wiz. "That award right there, I feel it was real special to me, because I feel like my whole career has just been based off my fans. My fans just really came through and they just pushed me over."

Wiz was one of 20 up-and-coming MCs nominated by MTV News for the crown, which was decided by a reader poll. More than 200,000 fans voted, and five finalists emerged: Wiz, Minaj, Atlanta's Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole.

In the end, Wiz reigned supreme, but he kept the entire event in perspective.

"It's like a friendly competition," he said. "It's not competing like I'm going against [the other candidates], but it's like we're all in the same thing. To be mentioned in the same thing as them and then to have my fans come through and just push it over — it's cool!"

We'll have lots more from the "Hottest Breakthroughs" in the coming days — thanks to everyone who voted, tweeted and otherwise got involved! And keep an eye out for MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" later this year!

Chris Hemsworth's 'Thor' Drew Influence From Mike Tyson

Every superhero has a unique weapon at his or her disposal. Iron Man has a wide array of highly advanced armored outfits in his multibillion-dollar wardrobe. Black Widow is a sultry threat with graceful moves capable of taking her opponents down to the mat every single time. Captain America wields a shield, uniform and ideology that embodies the great American dream.

So, what does Thor have on his side, other than his mighty hammer, Mjolnir? Well, how about a Mike Tyson-inspired knockout punch?

At Comic-Con International in San Diego, MTV News spoke with "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth about his leading role in the Marvel Studios comic book adaptation. In addition to discussing his character's iconic hammer and his sleek armored appearance, Hemsworth spoke to his character's fighting style, which draws inspiration from Tyson's renowned boxing prowess.

"First we looked at the comic books and the posturing and the way he moves and fights — a lot of his power seems to be drawn up from the ground — and we talked about boxers," Hemsworth told MTV. "Mike Tyson is very low to the ground, with a big open chest and big shoulder swings. Very sort of brutal but graceful at the same time."

As filming progressed on "Thor," however, Hemsworth, director Kenneth Branagh and their colleagues realized that the Tyson-inspired fighting style was trickier to pull off than initially imagined.

"As we shot stuff, we realized that it's virtually impossible to do that. The costume is pretty limiting with the movement, so there was a lot to work around," Hemsworth said, adding that they found "better and cooler" ways to explore Thor's combat abilities. "But there are vicious sorts of fight scenes in the film that are going to look fantastic."

Those vicious fight scenes were doubtlessly helped along with the use of Thor's mighty hammer, a weapon he described to MTV as "a very heavy ... incredible thing."

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

As a journalist, you love hearing the person you're interviewing say, "I don't know if I'm supposed to say this ..." That almost always means they're about to talk what we call "good ish." Last week in Atlanta on the video set for Drake's "Fancy," Drizzy dropped a jewel on us: Lil Wayne rapped for him over the phone again.

The last time Weezy kicked a verse on the jack from Rikers Island, it wound up being a super-underground, added-on remix verse for "Light Up." This time, the New Orleans Fireman gave his Young Money family member a preview of Tha Carter IV.

"He called me the other day from jail and rapped me two verses, man," Drake said. "It really made me, like, 'I gotta do something different. I gotta get sh-- together,' because he's really got bars and he's rapping from a broader life perspective, saying these things people love to hear."

Drake also revealed that, although he wasn't aware of the title of Weezy's September EP I'm Not A Human Being at the time, he's definitively a featured guest.

"I'm on it," Drake said. While our talk continued with the 23-year-old Toronto native, he also said that his mentor was in that rare space where fans loved him no matter what.

"It's gonna transfer over to whatever he does," Drake said of Weezy's following. "They're waiting for that new Wayne. I don't know if people are waiting for that new Drake. Thank Me Later was great — it was phenomenal things I've never seen, like people lining up. But it might have just been the moment — that's yet to be proven. But Wayne is just a proven artist. There's no doubt in my mind that people are waiting for that I'm Not a Human Being, that Carter IV, that Wayne and Drake album. All that!"

Seaside Heights Businesses Disagree With Governor's 'Jersey Shore' Dis

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 01:21 AM PDT

'For Seaside Heights, the exposure has been good for us,' exec says.
By Eric Ditzian

Over the weekend, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie appeared on ABC's "This Week" and took a shot at MTV's hit reality show "Jersey Shore."

"Negative for New Jersey," the Republican politician declared. "It takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them at the Jersey Shore, and tries to make America feel like this is the Jersey Shore. I can tell people — they want to know what New Jersey really is — I welcome them to come to New Jersey anytime. The Jersey Shore is a beautiful place."

Although the governor argued the show is a blight on his state, small-business owners in Seaside Heights — where the "Shore" kids filmed season one and are now in the midst of shooting the third season — have a different stance.

"For Seaside Heights, the exposure has been good for us," Maria Maruca, executive director of the Seaside Heights Business Improvement District, told MTV News. "The governor is expressing his opinion, and he does represent the entire state. I represent Seaside Heights."

Maruca said the beach town has already experienced an economic boost from the show's production crew, which swept into town recently and has kept hotel staff and catering services busy. And now that Snooki, the Situation and the rest of the cast are back in town — after a jaunt down to Miami Beach earlier this year — Maruca expects tourists to follow.

"Saturday evening, the cast did come down the boardwalk. They went to a local establishment called the Beach Bar for dinner," she said. "There was a buzz. There was a surge of people saying, 'Oh, there's the cast and crew — let's follow them!' It has created a buzz within the town. We're hoping that will equate to more people coming down to see what it's all about."

As for Christie's issue with the New York-centric makeup of the cast, Maruca argues that the Jersey Shore itself attracts a geographically varied clientele. "It's a microcosm," she said. "Our market is a tri-state market of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. A majority of our visitors are from New Jersey, but it's extremely diverse."

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

DMX Returns To Jail

Recently released from an Arizona jail, the troubled rapper began serving a 90-day sentence for a 2002 reckless driving case in Los Angeles, attorney says.

DMX turned himself in to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Courthouse on Monday afternoon (July 26) at about 2:30 p.m. to begin serving a 90-day sentence stemming from a 2002 reckless driving charge, according to his attorney.

X was arrested for DUI way back in '02, but reached a plea deal for a lesser charge of reckless driving, the rapper's lawyer, Aja Southern, told MTV News on Monday. Southern alleged that a series of events, including X having to serve time in an Arizona jail on an unrelated charge, had caused her client to postpone his L.A. sentence.

TMZ, however, reported that the Yonkers MC violated terms of his probation related to the 2002 case and as a result must serve time behind bars.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Probation Office would not confirm to MTV News whether DMX had violated his probation. Representatives for the Los Angeles Superior Court system were not available at press time to respond to inquiries made by MTV News.

And at press time, it remained unclear what the rapper may have done to land back in prison; DMX was recently sprung from an Arizona jail after completing a month stint arising from another probation violation.

DMX has made headlines in the past several years for his many mishaps with the law — from drug possession to a series of driving offenses — in both Arizona and Florida.

But his attorney said X is already on the path to becoming a more responsible citizen.

"Mr. Simmons is here today to fully cooperate with respect to any matters of the Court's concern," Southern wrote in a prepared statement. "This is one of many steps towards rebuilding his image and rapport with the community and his loyal fans."

VH-1's "Behind the Music" series recently aired a special focused on X, in which it was revealed that he had been working on a brand-new album. Swizz Beatz and newcomer Scoop DeVille were said to be onboard. The Dog, as his fans and friends call him, also appears on the just-released remix of Busta Rhymes' "Stop the Party," along with Ghostface Killah, Cam'ron and Swizz.

Katy Perry Gets Deep About <i>Teenage Dream</i>

Katy Perry gets personal about her journey to pop megastar and the songs on her upcoming album, Teenage Dream, in a new Billboard magazine cover story.

And while much of the stuff about Perry's early years has been well-documented — pastor's daughter strikes out in Nashville, does the major-label shuffle in Los Angeles, finds improbable success with hit single about snogging girls (and liking it) — the behind-the-scenes details on Dream are sure to raise more than a few eyebrows.

Perry talks in-depth about a handful of songs on the album, including "Circle the Drain," which Billboard's Monica Herrera writes is "about [her] ex-boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy," and features the lyrics "You fall asleep during foreplay/ 'Cause the pills you take, I know your forte/ I'm not sticking around to watch you go down."

"It's kind of like my 'You Oughta Know,' Alanis Morissette moment," Perry says.

She also claims that making much of Dream was a battle of wills with her all-star team of producers (which included Max Martin and Dr. Luke), one that she was determined not to lose, no matter the cost.

"I'm in the studio fighting with them to change the melody, or I'm fighting for the best lyric at all times," she says. "I think we rewrote 'Teenage Dream' five times for 10 days straight. On the last day, I was so happy to finally get somewhere that we all agreed on."

And she doesn't exactly shy away from expressing her opinions about some of her pop contemporaries either, taking an (assumed) potshot at Miley Cyrus — "I'm not coming out trying to prove anything to anyone, like, 'Oh, I'm in assless chaps!' or 'I can't be tamed!' ... I've already been through that phase" — and expressing no regret over the now infamous "blasphemy" tweet aimed, in part, at Lady Gaga and her "Alejandro" video.

"[Spirituality] is just important to me," she says. "The details of the importance are still to be determined, I guess. ... It's one of those things that as the older you get and the farther you try to run away from your parents, you just turn right around and they are embedded into your DNA."

Daniel Craig To Star In 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'

It may be a while before Daniel Craig slips back into James Bond's signature tuxedo, but he's booked a trip to the tattoo parlor to keep him busy in the meantime.

Long rumored, but now confirmed, Deadline Hollywood reports that Craig has finalized a deal to star in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the American remake of the critically acclaimed Swedish crime thriller based on the novels by late author Stieg Larsson.

The "Casino Royale" actor will star in the film as Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist who finds himself in the thick of a dangerous mystery involving the disappearance nearly 40 years earlier of a wealthy industrialist's niece. It's currently unknown whether the character's name, nationality and the story's Swedish setting will change for the American adaptation, to be written by screenwriter Steve Zaillian.

Craig is the second high-profile talent to be attached to "Dragon Tattoo," with director David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Social Network") already onboard to helm the project. With the role of Blomkvist filled, Fincher and producers are now tasked with finding the right actress to play Lisbeth Salander, the film's female lead. Rumored candidates include Ellen Page ("Inception"), Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch") and Rooney Mara ("The Social Network").

Slated to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2011, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is just the first film in a possible trilogy, with potential sequels including "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest," also based on Larsson's novels. (Craig has options for both films.) "Dragon Tattoo" begins filming this fall once Craig's work on Jon Favreau's "Cowboys and Aliens" is complete.

Wiz Khalifa is the first to tell you that his base of supporters, the Taylor Gang, is one of the most powerful entities in hip-hop. And over the past month, they showed out in force for him in the voting for MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010." Wiz was crowned the winner in the poll-based contest on Sunday.

Nearly 70,000 votes were cast for the Pittsburgh MC, giving him a tally that was almost twice that of runner-up Nicki Minaj, who clocked a little less than 40,000 votes. Nicki's Team Minaj always makes an impact when it comes to the Queen Barbie and it was no different for this event. Meanwhile, Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole rounded out the top-five finalists. Each collected more than 30,000 votes, running neck and neck with one another.

Travis Porter have their own major following, the Differenter Gang, and those fans helped the Porter trio go from #5 to #3 within the last two weeks. Simmons, the son of Run-DMC's Reverend Run, made the most dramatic leap of any of the nominees in the initial lineup of 20 contenders. The 15 year-old held steady in the middle of the pack throughout most of the voting, but jumped into the top five in the last week of voting, knocking the talented Detroit swag savant Big Sean; Sean finished in the sixth slot. In the last two days of voting, the Simmons' tireless fans boosted him and bumped J. Cole down one spot from four to five.

"Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" was a project started in late June, when members of the MTV News brain trust came up with 20 names. These MCs represented artists who we felt were not just on the rise, but had the potential to make a major impact as superstars in the industry. Once the original list was compiled, the 20 contenders were announced to the public and presented for voting.

Beginning last Monday, on July 19, the top-five "Hottest Breakthrough" finalists were rolled out (in no particular order — we didn't want to risk ruining the surprise). And on Sunday, during the "Sucker Free Summit," Wiz took a victory lap as the Breakthrough champ.

"Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" Poll Results:
1. Wiz Khalifa: 66,054 votes
2. Nicki Minaj: 37,519 votes
3. Travis Porter: 35,950 votes
4. Diggy Simmons: 34,218 votes
5. J. Cole: 32,759 votes
6. Big Sean: 27,193 votes
7. Curren$y: 21,657 votes
8. Tyga: 15,359 votes
9. Roscoe Dash: 11,517 votes
10. Donnis: 9,914 votes
11. Nipsey Hussle: 8,292 votes
12. Freddie Gibbs: 8,236 votes
13. Waka Flocka Flame: 5,034 votes
14. Trae Tha Truth: 4,441 votes
15. Jay Electronica: 4,256 votes
16. Yelawolf: 3,938 votes
17. Pac Div: 3,206 votes
18. Vado: 2,831 votes
19. Jay Rock: 1,311 votes
20. Pill: 865 votes

We'll have lots more from the "Hottest Breakthroughs" in the coming days — thanks to everyone who voted, tweeted and otherwise got involved! And keep an eye out for MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" later this year!

Ryan Reynolds Finally Recites 'Green Lantern' Oath At Comic-Con

A young Con-goer got a previously tight-lipped Reynolds to say the pledge following four failed attempts by MTV News.

Ryan Reynolds at Comic-Con

We've been trying to get Ryan Reynolds to recite his "Green Lantern" oath — the iconic pledge that starts, "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight" — for a very long time and thought we'd finally get him to do it at Comic-Con.

He turned us down in November when we named him the actor we were most thankful for in 2009. And he declined again a few months later when we caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival. He demurred still a third time while walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

So we were hoping a fourth time would be the charm when Reynolds swooped into Comic-Con this weekend to unveil previously unreleased footage from the upcoming DC Comics superhero flick. Alas, our hopes were soon dashed when the 33-year-old yet again skipped out on an oath recitation for our cameras.

"You're going to see the oath," he assured MTV News.

With hope flickering again, we wondered if that meant Reynolds would finally debut the oath during the "Green Lantern" panel at the Con.

"You might. You may. I'm not sure," he answered. "They're going to get the oath in a great way, but it ain't going to be right now."

No, but it happened shortly after our talk, when a young boy at the panel asked Reynolds if he would recite the oath. Unable to say no, Reynolds launched into the monologue. It was a heartwarming moment for a young fan, and the crowd assembled in Hall H erupted into applause when he finished.

We guess Reynolds got over his earlier uneasiness, which he neatly summarized to us at the Oscars in March. "Do you have any idea how much trouble I'd get into if I just belted out the oath right here?" he laughed.

Seth Rogen 'Might Direct' 'Jay And Seth Vs. The Apocalypse'

The 'Green Hornet' star tells MTV News at Comic-Con that he and co-writer are at work on script for adaptation of 2007 short.

SAN DIEGO — While fans are excited that a big-screen adaptation of "Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse" is on the way, it's still unclear exactly when the full-length flick — based on the hilarious 2007 short starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel — will actually hit theaters.

When we caught up with him at San Diego Comic-Con, Rogen explained that it can take "years" to get a movie like "Jay and Seth" off the ground — if it's going to be good. But according to the "Green Hornet" star, he's hard at work on a script.

"Me and Evan [Goldberg] are writing it right now, actually, and it's come a long way and it will probably be one of the next movies that we make, I would imagine," Rogen revealed MTV News. "And I think me and Evan might direct it, which is a pretty big step for us."

So a production date might not be far off?

"It takes years to write a good movie, that's what we've learned," Rogen said. "We're finally going to script form. Once you're there, you're kind of on the homestretch; it means you have the key ideas to build the movie," he continued. "It's a movie about a group dynamic. We've been watching movies like 'The Mist' and stuff like that to try to make a 'Tremors.' We're kind of trying to go into the horror/comedy genre a little bit."

Fans got a taste of what to expect from the film when a 60-second trailer hit the Net, and Rogen said he saw nothing odd about dropping a trailer for a movie he hasn't filmed, let alone written a script for yet. "It's a great lesson in filmmaking, honestly, that we made the trailer for the movie, and now we're getting to make the movie, which is really great," he said.

Earlier this year, co-star Baruchel teased to MTV News some special cameos.

He explained, "It'll be what you see in the trailer and then some. It's going to be a pretty offensive vision of the apocalypse, and I want a lot of dead-celebrity cameos. Because L.A. is full of famous people, I'd like all of the cameos to be them as corpses."

Travie McCoy Gets 'Dark' In New 'Need You' Video

Song is about a painful breakup, and may be inspired by McCoy's ex, Katy Perry.

Travie McCoy always intended his Lazarus album to be the soundtrack to summer, but even he couldn't have predicted the runaway success of "Billionaire," his lilting, Bruno Mars-aided tune that's become a surprise summertime smash.

So, when MTV News caught up with the Gym Class Heroes frontman at the Los Angeles stop of the Rihanna/Ke$ha Last Girl on Earth Tour (for which he is the opening act/possessor of the Y chromosome), he admitted he was still "trying to wrap [his] head around" everything that's happened since "Billionaire" made it big, especially now that he's gearing up to release a video for the second proper single, "Need You."

And if this one hits, he may very well never be able to recover. Because unlike his breezy hit, "Need You" is shaping up to be a decidedly darker affair.

"We just shot the video two nights ago from, like, 9 at night until 10 the next morning — it was tough," McCoy said. "It's definitely a little darker than what people are used to from me. I'm never serious at all — it's hard for me to grasp this whole thing, the fact that I'm getting paid to do something that I love, so I'm always cracking jokes or smiling. All the videos I've been in have had a lighthearted feel, but this one is kind of serious. ...It's one of the more introspective and personal songs on the record, so it's only right to have a video that's kind of dark."

Of course, since it's McCoy we're talking about, "Need You" isn't exactly the musical version of Lars von Trier's "Antichrist," but hidden beneath the song's chorus, there's definitely something serious going on: It's a blow-by-blow of a relationship coming to an end, and everything bad that comes with it. And, given that he once dated Katy Perry, you can infer from that what you will.

"The concept of the song is basically me explaining to a girl that I'm not in a position to give her what she needs, and that's always tough, especially when you have feelings for someone," he said. "So the video is definitely relationship [based]. But, in this situation, she doesn't take it too well. Let's just say that."

'Star Trek' Scribes Are 'Making Significant Progress' On Sequel

Busy duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci say the script will 'focus in' on the first movie's characters.

The writers of the hit 2009 flick "Star Trek" are pretty stingy about what they can reveal about the much-anticipated sequel, but they can tell us one thing: They're working on it.

"We actually are making significant progress on the story," Alex Kurtzman told MTV News at Comic-Con in San Diego. "I will tell you nothing more. That's something we've never told anyone."

Kurtzman was quick to point out that while he and co-writer Roberto Orci are busy with other projects, they are making sure they get in plenty of time for "Star Trek 2," which star Zachary Quinto said probably wouldn't begin filming until next year.

"Our days are regimented by the hour; it's the only way to get through it," Kurtzman explained. And if they're on the set of another film, he said, "We can step into the trailer and do work on 'Star Trek.' "

The writers said they are developing storylines for "Trek" characters both new and old.

"There were new characters in the first one, so we really want to focus in on them," Orci said. "For example, Scotty (Simon Pegg), who you met at the end of the last movie, who [was] so important to the crew but had the shortest screen time, now is going to be in the movie from the very beginning. In fact, the whole crew is in it from the beginning.

"Now, the whole family is there," he continued, "and you want to focus on them first before you worry too much about new characters, and then make sure you have them taken care of."

And that means their personal favorites may make the cut for the next flick.

"I loved, and a lot of people loved, Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood)," Orci said. "I loved Bones, who a lot of people thought, '[Karl Urban is] too good-looking to be cast as Bones.' ... He was a fan favorite and ours too."

What do you want to see happen in the sequel? Tell us in the comments!

While Chris Brown has always made it clear that he looks to Michael Jackson for inspiration, there are nearly as many parallels to be made between Brown and Usher. And last weekend, Breezy joined Usher on stage during the Reggae SumFest 2010 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The duo wowed audiences in the concluding night of the festival.

Brown had already performed his own set on Friday, tearing through songs like "Run It" and "Forever" and showing off his formidable dancing skills. But it was his surprise appearance during Usher's set the following day that really set the crowd off. According to TheChrisBrownBlog.com, the two were also joined onstage by Elephant Man and later engaged in a dance-off.

Video footage from the performance had not surfaced online at press time, but photos reveal the two singing together and even showing some affection with an onstage hug.

Brown took to Twitter Saturday to thank Jamaica. "I wanna thank you Jamaica for your wonderful embrace last night at the show," he wrote. "Next time well do passa passa ... lmao ... (oh hell naw). Love ya!"

Later on Saturday, he tweeted about performing with Usher. "Me and Usher killin Jamaica right now," he wrote.

When Chris burst on the music scene five years ago, he was overcome with excitement when meeting Usher. "To see him face-to-face, I was like, 'OK, Chris, it's gonna be all right, just chill out right quick. You about to do the song, man, don't be no punk,' " Brown told MTV News about recording a song that was later featured in Usher's 2005 film "In the Mix."

How 'Inception' Beat 'Salt' At The Box Office

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 01:30 AM PDT

Angelina Jolie spy flick can't overcome the dream thriller's buzz.

Christopher Nolan can't quit winning. His 2005 "Batman Begins" held the top box-office spot for two straight weeks, followed by "The Prestige," which nabbed that slot in 2006. Then along came 2008's "The Dark Knight" with four straight weekend wins.

Was there ever any doubt that "Inception," his new thriller about the world of shared dreams, would tear up the multiplex for a long time?

Actually, there was. After opening to $62.8 million, "Inception" was expected to finish second at this past weekend's box office, giving way to Angelina Jolie's spy flick "Salt." But by the time the weekend was over, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring "Inception" was once again the top ticket-seller.

Was this a case of Angie faltering or Leo soaring? What exactly went down at the box office?

"Sensational word-of-mouth," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations.

No matter how bankable Jolie remains as an action star, "Inception" was riding a wave of critical and audience buzz that could not be defeated.

While most blockbusters fall more than 50 percent in their second weekend, Nolan's flick dropped just 31 percent. As Box Office Mojo points out, a movie in that genre hasn't experienced such a small drop since "The Matrix" in 1999.

Jolie's movie, then, never really had a chance.

" 'Salt' had a solid opening and did exactly what I was expecting of it," said Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru.

For a film not based on an existing entertainment property — like "Inception," a real rarity in Hollywood these days — the $36.5 million bow was a very respectable one. We might question the wisdom of scheduling the movie's release so close to that of "Inception," because of the films' potentially similar demographic, but Sony is likely pleased with how "Salt" performed.

"Credit Angelina Jolie and her big guns," Bock said. "She is the only woman in Hollywood right now that can open an action film with such boffo box office."

In the end, though, not even Jolie's guns could subdue all of the positive water-cooler chatter about "Inception."

"The buzz has been incredible, and it has quickly become the must-see event movie of the summer," Pandya said. "I see it eventually outgrossing the latest 'Twilight' film and breaking the $300 million mark in North America alone. This is an old-fashioned case of a good movie selling itself."

Check out everything we've got on "Inception."
