Before her hometown headlining debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (July 6), Lady Gaga tweeted a photo of herself standing in front of the New York arena's marquee. The photo had no commentary except for the tag "#madisonsquaregaga," and indeed, it seemed like she was on the verge of taking over the arena in the hours before she took the stage.

Some fans were dressed as characters from her videos — the Diet Coke curlers from the "Telephone" clip were particularly popular — while others took her glammed-up aesthetic to the hilt, with glitter, elaborate eye makeup and giant hair bows ruling the night. The fashion statements were all the more impressive given the weather in New York, where temperatures soared past the 100-degree mark on Tuesday.

Gaga's Tuesday night concert was the first of three Monster Ball shows taking place this week in New York, which serves as the setting for the elaborately staged concert. During the course of her show, Gaga and her dancers veered all over the city, from the Lower East Side to the F train to Central Park. But it was obvious that Gaga was very aware that the fantasy world she'd created had been set up inside the arena where, as the young Stefani Germanotta, she took in quite a few performances by music's biggest stars.

"My name is Lady Gaga and I used to sit right over there, way far in the back and way up top," she said at one point during the evening. She then reeled off a list of artists she'd seen during her past visits to the Garden — Madonna, Cher, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Kiss. "I used to stare at this side of the room, and I used to think, 'I'm gonna be up there,' " she continued.

"Every second you watch me on this stage," she told the crowd, "you remember, I was sitting where you are."

Later in the show, she dedicated a wrenching performance of "Speechless" to her father, who was in the audience. She recalled the days of him helping her carry a piano down four flights of stairs so she could bring it to shows in the early part of her career and said, while pitched over the piano, "Of all the drunk men in my life, Dad, you're my favorite."

"Without New York, I would not exist," Gaga then declared. "But I also would not exist without my friends," she added, and after a lengthy rundown of the challenges she'd faced with the help of her pals she dedicated her new song "You and I" to them. Her performance of the rock-tinged track was full of passion, stretching into a near-epic where she pounded away on the piano.

The obvious nods to New York sprinkled into the evening — both within the show and timed to tonight's setting — only seemed to energize the crowd, and Gaga fed off the adulation. By the time the night came to a close, there was a triumphant feeling in the air.

"We did it, little monsters," she told the crowd after the night's closing number, "Bad Romance." "We made it to the Monster Ball! We made it to Madison Square Garden.

"Thank you for making my dream come true," she continued. "I love you so much."

"Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" Candidate: Freddie Gibbs

Of course Freddie Gibbs wants to get a little paper, but he's still giving away whole bodies of work for free. His fans should be familiar with his mixtapes Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs, Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik and The Labels Tryin to Kill Me, and the buzz around those projects have him in the running for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010." He introduced us all to his forceful baritone and Midwest flow. In the next couple of weeks, he'll drop his Str8 Killa, No Filla Mixtape (July 29) and the Str8 Killa EP (August 3).

"I been giving my fans the music with the Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik. I had so many projects with nothing for sale," the Gary, Indiana, MC said of the EP; he did note that the EP will have several records the mixtape doesn't, such as "Oil Money" with Bun B, Chuck English, Chip the Ripper and Dan Aurbach.

"I just wanted to throw something in stores that people who ain't on the Net can grab," he said. "Really, you're getting 25, 30 songs for $8. Get the mixtape first and try it before you buy it. If you wanna support, you can support."

Gibbs' first release from Str8 Killa is "National Anthem."

" 'National Anthem,' all I was really doing was documenting my personal struggle, the things I've been dealing with," he said. "The struggle, that rebellion is a theme that everybody can relate to. I used my tailor-made flow."

Gibbs said the follow-up record is called "Face Down": "Straight gangster sh-- for the clubs and the streets."

"The whole process, man, it was just me taking my time doing what I wanted to do musically," he added about the tape. "Getting creative, making my sh-- sound more like an album than a mixtape. I look at dudes like 50 Cent. His mixtapes was sh-- that sounded like records. Even if he was rapping on other people's beats, he made them his own. I studied him, and I put my own flavor and came with the Str8 Killa. It's going to jump me off like Trap or Die did for Jeezy.

"Str8 Killa is gonna blow your mind, he added. "The world kinda got A.D.D. right now. You gotta keep fresh material. With me putting out a body of work, it works in my favor. I want people to fall in love with me as an artist. I don't want one song to be bigger than Freddie Gibbs. People get attached to one song with dudes, then when they done, they throw them out the window. I want the people to really fall in love with me. That's why I put out good, structured bodies of work."

Freddie and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" — and the winner will be decided by you!

"Jersey Shore" star Nicole Polizzi is better known as Snooki these days, but back in high school the MTV reality darling was a bit of a tomboy. And on the latest "When I Was 17," the TV star admitted that she had one dangerous and scary incident while four-wheeling.

"So growing up [I was] very into, like, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, snowboarding," Snooki recalled in this week's episode, which also features "Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek and N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams.

It seemed that her love of four-wheeling got her into a little bit of trouble. "So one day, I was 17, and my girl came over and we decided to go four-wheeling," she said. "So me and her are driving on the road and I pass this really hot senior's house. He's outside watering his plants with his shirt off."

This obviously caught Snooki's attention. Her pal Stephanie added, "It was this guy that we all thought was gorgeous and, of course, Nicole got distracted."

"I turned my head," Snooki further explained about the incident. "And I noticed that I'm going into this bank [at] 20 miles per hour [and] ran into the bank. The four-wheeler tumbled three times. My girlfriend jumped off [and] skinned her knee. You could see her knee bone and I got stuck under the four-wheeler. I couldn't move anything just because I looked at this boy because his shirt was off."

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Snooki, James Van Der Beek and Pharrell Williams — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

New York, New York, we back! The New York Knicks gave their fans a healthy helping of hope on Monday when they came to contractual agreement with one of the top stars in the NBA, Amar'e Stoudemire. While in their pursuit of the former Phoenix Sun, the Knicks brass called on none other than a Big Apple King to help with the recruitment: Fat Joe. recently Joe posted a photo on Twitter featuring himself, Spike Lee, Stoudemire, Chris Rock, Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni and others.

"I'm a New York Knick fan, die-hard!" Joe told us. "And we been losing for a long time — like, eight years or something. The Knicks organization called me and said, 'Yo Joe, we're trying to get Amar'e.' By the way, he's my favorite player, no hype! That's who I wanted to come to New York. It's been a long time since New York had a guy to dunk on people, pound his chest, go crazy. That's my type of player. Hard body. So they was like, 'Joe, we want you to call him up, start talking to him. Tell him to come to the city, tell him how beautiful the city is.' 'Mare, I've known him for years — since he came in the league as rookie."

Joe has also known Knicks owner James Dolan for many years — the leader of the Terror Squad said after the Knicks front office called, he put the full-court press on Stoudemire.

"When I called [Amar'e], he was like, 'Fat Joe.' He already knew it was me," Joe recalled. "I was like, 'We need you, we need you!' I did my greatest Khaled rendition ever created. 'I gotta have you. You're killing me, I'm gonna die. I need oxygen!' He was like, 'Joe calm down. It might happen. Calm down.' It was a great experience."

Finally, after all the wooing and a $100 million contract offer, Stoudemire agreed to come play at Madison Square Garden for the upcoming season. His commitment was celebrated Monday night at a dinner in New York.

"So then they called me up and said, 'He's gonna sign. We want you to come to the first meal,' " Joe recalled. "So after I came in there, it was small — Spike, Chris Rock, Allen Houston, John Starks, Carl Banks, [Michael] Strahan — then you had the coaches and the owners and Fat Joe representing that hip-hop side of things. It was an honor for me. I always remember when I used to go the Garden and I was in the nosebleeds — and Jordan and Ewing looked this small from up there. Now I sit on the woods. To have them call me and be like, 'Joe, we need you to go in on Amar'e,' it was an honor."

Joe's headhunting isn't done — he's been talking to other NBA superstars in his own time to convince them to play in his hometown.

"I can't sleep," Joe said of all the speculation over where top NBA free agents such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will land. "I been talking to Carmelo [Anthony] since the Puerto Rican Day parade. I been hammering on his head like, 'We need you.' He loves the city. I was in France talking to Chris Paul and Tony Parker, like, 'Yo, we need y'all to come.' I'm going in. This is the most exciting time I ever experienced on a free-agency level. Just to know where LeBron is going. Carmelo said he might leave. Wade! Who's coming to the Knicks? We lost the last three or four years with them telling us they was going to make big moves this summer. There's been a lot of pressure on the Knicks organization to pull something off and they told me last night, 'We're not done, Joe.' I'm like, 'Please man, I got my guy Amar'e, but we need a team around him as well.' "

James, Wade and Bosh are all free agents, free to sign with any NBA team. Their main suitors have been the Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks. Meanwhile, Anthony, Bosh and Parker are still under contract to their respective teams, but have been the subject of trades around the NBA rumor mill.

Kelly Cutrone Reveals Her Favorite 'Hills' Moments

'I didn't even know what 'The Hills' was,' 'City' star reveals about her season one appearance on the show.

With the series finale of "The Hills" set to take place on July 13, it's time to reflect on some of the show's greatest moments. Whether it's the time Lauren Conrad first stepped into her apartment with Heidi Montag or what is certain to be an emotional final scene on the show, "The Hills" has had fans glued to their TV screens week after week for six seasons.

For a while, People's Revolution head honcho Kelly Cutrone was part of the madness. Now one of the stars of "The City," Cutrone admits there are a couple of standout moments from her time on the show that are her favorites in its storied history.

It was the moment Cutrone met LC for the first time at the Jennifer Nicholson fashion show during Fashion Week. And it was a moment that Cutrone made her future employee cry when she didn't comply with getting LC tickets for her Teen Vogue boss Lisa Love. Cutrone is now able to laugh about the whole experience.

"I didn't even know what 'The Hills' was," Cutrone recalled about being featured in the season-one finale. "But I knew this girl was coming. It took her a while to realize [I was the woman she was supposed to get the tickets from at the show]. And I think I made her cry.

"It's one of my favorite moments. I wasn't happy that she was crying. That look was kind of Betty Davis, Tammy Faye. It's the ultimate pop-culture drama-girl moment," she recalled.

And Cutrone's list would not be complete without her now infamous job interview with Stephanie Pratt. "I was walking into the L.A. office, Pratt's there, and she's sitting on the couch [looking scared]," she remembered. "[Lauren explained,] 'She's just really nervous to meet you.' Not to be mean, but it was probably one of the least exciting interviews. The first thing I notice is [her] objective. It says 'to become a handbag designer.' " How does Cutrone feel about that objective now? "I've never seen anything like that," she said. "Why would you put that?"

Which of Kelly Cutrone's 'Hills' moments is your favorite? Tell us in the comments!

Iamamiwhoami: The Viral Campaign That Just Made People Sick

Posted: 07 Jul 2010 03:50 AM PDT

Mysterious videos never really turned into anything, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Iamamiwhoami
Photo: iamamiwhoami

Back in December, the Gulf of Mexico had yet to be sullied by roughly 50 kajillion gallons of crude oil, people were freaking out about swine flu, and Lady Gaga hadn't even begun feuding with Jerry Seinfeld yet (or released the "Telephone" video, for that matter). It seems like a million years ago, doesn't it?

Anyway, while all that was going on, I had become newly obsessed with Iamamiwhoami, a mysterious, decidedly spooky viral campaign that involved strangely sexualized tree sap, sorta-gross scenes of a woman smeared in mud and definitely gross scenes of a live goat birth. Needless to say, it was pretty much required viewing.

As 2009 turned into 2010, Iamami kept churning out videos, and my obsession only continued to grow. I was spending hours attempting to crack the bizarre numeric codes, neglecting work to continuously refresh Iam's YouTube page and basically foregoing any semblance of a normal life. I was determined, come hell or high water (or my eventual unemployment) to figure out just who was behind this thing. It got so bad that I even wrote an open letter to Iamami, begging him or her to stop for the sake of my own sanity.

Only, they didn't. If anything, Iamami only ramped up his or her efforts, sending me a terrifying package filled with doll hair and wood splinters and a mysterious codex. And then, well, then nothing really happened.

That's not exactly true. We got even more videos, most of which were e-mailed to me by Iamami through a Gmail account. But, for all intents and purposes, the viral campaign that had so engrossed me stopped right there. It's still going on right now, in fact (a brand-new clip was sent to me last week), but really, I can't be bothered anymore. And, judging by the falloff of media coverage about the campaign, not to mention the rather dormant comments section on Iamami's YouTube page, I'm not the only one. And that's why I brought up December, when this whole thing began. Because while seven months certainly wasn't "a million years ago" in reality, on the Internet, it's practically an eternity. Most people's attention spans don't last seven minutes, let alone seven months, and whomever is behind this thing — for reasons I cannot even begin to comprehend — never grasped this. Or, more probably, they just didn't care.

Which is why, I suppose, will be Iamami's legacy. It is quite possibly the first viral campaign in history that ceased to be viral and just sort of became, well, something. Whether this was due to some gross miscalculation, general lack of foresight or really, really lofty expectations (because, remember, for a while there, people truly believed Christina Aguilera was behind this), Iam will probably best be remembered for being an engrossing, if not totally satisfying trifle, a brief sensation that, ultimately, hung around too long.

And sure, a lot of this is because, from the looks of things, Iamami has something to do with Swedish singer Jonna Lee (that's definitely her in the latest video), and after months of fingering everyone from Xtina to Gaga as the woman behind the scenes, Lee wasn't exactly a rewarding payoff. It's sort of like what will happen if, after months of speculation and round-the-clock coverage, LeBron James just ends up re-signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers — all that hyperventilating, all those miles logged by J.A. Adande, ultimately, were for nothing.

Then again, in true Iamami fashion, we're still not clear if Lee is solely responsible for the campaign, or, really, what this campaign is intended to promote in the first place. And that — more than anything — is probably my biggest problem with the whole thing. The folks responsible spent months teasing us with clues, with numbers and animals and Swedish cakes, with strands of hair and codices. They made us believe every single detail of the videos was somehow paramount to solving the mystery of Iamami — "OK, in this scene, there are seven dogs" — and really, none of it was. It's kind of like the trick the folks behind "Lost" pulled with the finale (to use an aptly dated example). Six seasons spent making even the most trivial of details seem vital, only to pull the rug out from viewers at the end and say that none of it really mattered. And yes, I found it just as unsatisfying as Iamami.

So, seven months in, we're still no closer to knowing anything about the campaign, who's really behind it or, honestly, why we should even care. Still, the Iamami machine keeps chugging along, seemingly without a resolution in sight, off into the horizon of the Internet. Some are still hanging on, but I'm happy I got off at the last stop. It was a good ride while it lasted, though.

'Despicable Me' Star Steve Carell Weighs In On Key Supervillain Traits

Posted: 06 Jul 2010 01:24 AM PDT

A great onscreen villain needs 'good funding, lots of good gadgets,' says Carell, who plays evil Gru in animated 3-D flick.

How can you possibly choose the greatest big-screen villain of all time?

Do you go sci-fi and pick Darth Vader or Khan? Or perhaps you favor a bit of a psychopathic streak in your baddies, in which case you might tag Hannibal Lecter or Norman Bates. Meanwhile, supernatural flicks offer up the likes of Freddy Krueger and the Wicked Witch of the West. But then you start to consider aliens, machines and comic book rogues, and you realize it's all an exercise in futility. The best you can do is to enumerate what truly makes a madman, well, totally freaking insane, which is where Steve Carell and "Despicable Me" come in.

In the upcoming 3-D animated flick, Carell plays the world's top supervillain, at least until a pint-size scoundrel displaces him from the #1 spot. Nonetheless, we turn to Mr. Carell for an enlightened perspective: What makes an onscreen villain truly depraved?

"You need good funding," the actor told MTV News. "You need to have a powerful bank behind you. You need to be well-prepared. You need lots of good gadgets."

Sounds like Carell is describing Gru, his bald, scarf-wearing "Despicable" gangster, who maintains an army of minions and whose gadgets include freeze-rays, flame guns, rocket launchers, and all manner of funky-looking planes and cars. And after playing Gru, Carell walked away, he said, with the sense that cinematic villains might simply be misunderstood.

"My character in this is very much like Hannibal Lecter because they both start pretty villainous," he joked, "but they end up being really sweet."

What do you think makes a movie villain truly memorable? Tell us in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Shocked By #1 Hit 'Your Love': 'Isn't That Crazy?'

Nicki Minaj aimed to make noise with her debut single "Massive Attack," which was produced by Alex Da Kid (Eminem, B.o.B), featured a hook penned by Sean Garrett (Beyoncé) and boasted a Hype Williams-directed video. It didn't quite connect with the masses, however, despite all the pedigree.

But then "Your Love," a throwaway number the Queens femcee planned to sit on, was stolen and leaked to the Web. The result? Nicki Minaj became the first solo female hip-hop artist in more than eight years to score a #1record on Billboard's rap chart.

"I was not planning on putting the song out at all," she told MTV News over the weekend on the "Your Love" video set. "But then I heard it one day, somebody told me it was online. And I was like, 'No way, no way in the world that song is out.' I went and listened to it and was really upset. It wasn't mixed, it wasn't finished, it wasn't anything — I wasn't gonna use it at all. But then radio started playing it."

Soon enough, the record shot up to #1; the last woman to rule the rap charts was Missy Elliott with "Work It."

"Isn't that crazy?" Nicki said. "Crazy. I don't even know how it feels [to have a #1 hit] right now. But it's amazing."

In the meantime, the Lil Wayne protégé is still working on her untitled debut album, which she hopes to release by the end of the year. She recently aligned herself with Diddy and is fresh off winning for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards last month.

According to Nicki, though, she's still rooted in the spirit of a newcomer and not letting success go to her head.

"Sometimes people see the glitz and the glamour. That's why they envy you," Minaj said earlier this year. "They don't see three, four, five years ago. They don't see when I was selling my mixtape for $2 on Jamaica Avenue [in Queens]. They don't see when I couldn't get New York DJs — I lived in New York my whole life — to even play a song. At the end of the day, it's all about hard work. You clearly see that hard work; that's all it takes. If you really want it, direct your energy on positive sh--, and it will happen."

Lindsay Lohan's Legal Troubles: A Timeline

Posted: 06 Jul 2010 07:04 AM PDT

Actress' 90-day jail sentence is hardly her first brush with the law.
By Kelley L. Carter

Lindsay Lohan in court Tuesday
Photo: MTV News

Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in a drug rehab center on Tuesday (July 6) for violating probation, but it was hardly the actress' first brush with the law. MTV News takes a look back at Lohan's legal issues, as well as her trouble with drugs and drinking:

February 2, 2005: A personal-injury suit is filed against Lohan by Eddie Pamilton and Ilex Harris, who claim the actress injured them in a traffic accident that took place the year before.

October 4, 2005: Lohan is transported to a hospital for minor injuries after she crashes her car into another vehicle in West Hollywood, California. The then-19-year-old actress collided into the passenger's side of a van that was turning in front of her, which then collided with a parked van. A passenger in Lohan's car and the driver of the van suffered moderate injuries and were transported by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital.

January 2006: Vanity Fair reports that Lohan admitted she had bulimia during an interview, but Lohan denies that she has an eating disorder. The article quotes Lohan as saying, "I was sick. Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, 'You're going to die if you don't take care of yourself.' "

January 2007: Lohan checks into rehab for the first time. "I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health," the singer says in a statement. "I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time." In December, Lohan's publicist revealed that Lohan had been voluntarily attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

May 26, 2007: Lohan gets arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her Mercedes convertible strikes a curb in Los Angeles. Police reported that they found a substance they believe to be cocaine at the scene.

May 28, 2007: Lohan checks into rehab again. "Lindsay admitted herself to an intensive medical rehabilitation facility on Memorial Day," a representative for the singer/actress says in a statement. "Because this is a medical matter, it is our hope that the press will appreciate the seriousness of the situation and respect the privacy of Lindsay as well as the other patients receiving treatment at the facility."

June 14, 2007: Lohan is accused of being drunk when she crashed into a parked van in Beverly Hills in October 2005, according to a lawsuit. Raymundo Ortega claims Lohan — who was 19 years old at the time — "consumed alcohol and became intoxicated" at the Ivy restaurant before the accident.

July, 14, 2007: Lohan checks out of Promises rehab facility after more than six weeks and celebrates the end of her 45-day stay by soberly partying with some friends at Pure nightclub in Las Vegas.

July 24, 2007: Less than two weeks after leaving a rehabilitation facility, Lohan is pulled over by police early in the morning and arrested on five counts, including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and possession of narcotics. Lohan checks into an undisclosed rehab facility hours after the arrest.

August 14, 2007: Lohan gets sued again, this time for assault and negligence by one of the passengers who was traveling in the car the actress allegedly chased the month prior while driving under the influence.

August 23, 2007: Lohan gets charged with seven misdemeanor counts for her two DUI arrests earlier that year. She reaches a plea deal, saying she would spend one day in jail, serve 10 days of community service and complete a drug-treatment program. Lohan is placed on 36 months' probation and required to complete an 18-month alcohol-education program and pay hundreds of dollars in fines. She also is to finish a three-day county coroner program that required her to visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunken drivers. "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan writes in a statement released to MTV News.

October 5, 2007: Lohan leaves a two-month rehab stint at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Utah. She is also seen with her estranged father, Michael, who was carrying her suitcases.

December 31, 2007: In a video posted on TMZ, Lohan drinks straight from a bottle of champagne while partying in Italy.

October 16, 2009: Lohan shows up more than an hour late to a probation hearing in Beverly Hills for a progress review on her two DUI cases. She gets another year of probation tacked on due to failure to complete alcohol-education classes as required.

April 26, 2010: Lohan is asked to leave the film "The Other Side." The director says Lohan was fired because she is not "bankable."

June 8, 2010: A Beverly Hills judge issues an arrest warrant for Lohan and orders her to post $200,000 bail after she violates a court order to not consume alcohol while wearing a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet. The warrant is recalled after bail is posted.

July 6, 2010: Lohan is sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating her probation.

Eminem? Drake? Fans Name Their Best Albums Of The Year (So Far)

Last week we had reached the midway point of 2010, and I wrote my annual "Best Albums of the Year (So Far)" list. And, much like every other year, there were a whole lot of people who had different opinions.

It seems that no matter how many albums I choose to highlight (23 this time around), there are always some that I miss ... and more often than not, at least one of those albums is by Eminem. Last year, I left Relapse off of my list, and, boy, did the Em fans let me know about it. This year, his Recovery disc failed to make the cut, and once again, the fans were out in full force, voicing their displeasure and calling me all sorts of nasty things.

While we could live without the catcalls, we want to know your picks for the best albums of the year so far, and lots of people have written in with theirs (Drake, B.o.B, Christina Aguilera). Oh, and a few folks out there actually agreed with my list, so, hey, let's hear from them, too — and let us know what your picks are!

"What about Eminem's Recovery? SEVEN of his songs are on the Top 100 Billboard list," reader Keith wrote. "And also, what about Drake's Thank Me Later? The numbers show clearly for these guys." Reader Ian had similar feelings: "Where is B.o.B's album The Adventures of Bobby Ray? That was incredible." As did ConcertConfessions.com — "Dude, you forgot Deftones' Diamond Eyes. Oh, and I am trying, but just not feeling the new Against Me! Some songs I love, some songs I want to smack them for" — and Stomp17 ("Where is Gorillaz's Plastic Beach? That album should at least be number 10 or 9 on the Best of 2010 list." [Note: It made the list as an Honorable Mention.]

Several people had a lot to say about their picks. MclintM sounded off about Christina Aguilera's Bionic: "I don't understand all the backlash and unnecessary criticism with [Bionic]. If you give it repeat listens — the whole 24 tracks as it was meant to be ... can't stand label's deluxe editions now — and have heard previous efforts it all makes sense in her trajectory. Really plays with her voice and is some of the most downright club-worthy stuff she's ever laid down."

Others drilled down into my picks, singling out Janelle Monáe in particular. "Great article!" reader Mike wrote. "Kudos on a lot of your choices. A couple comments: 1) I think you should check out Foxy Shazam. Their self-titled album came out in April and it is fantastic. They have an incredible amount of energy and talent. 2) I think Robyn deserves higher on the list. Even at eight tracks, the album is really great. She really has a knack for writing great quality pop songs. 3) Others that I think you should consider for your list are Sia's We Are Born and Motion City Soundtrack's My Dinosaur Life. I also think Janelle Monáe should be #1 on your list. Her album is fantastic and innovative. I really think she is the future of music."

"I heard Janelle Monáe's CD and I must say, pure epic," Cwilson10 wrote. "I was hearing all kinds of stuff, I thought I was tripping for a second. To tell you the truth I didn't know her CD was going to be that much fun. It felt like I was in a movie theater when the CD was over and Janelle was my date. I'm not lying, she puts everything into a story!!"

And, of course, a few readers shared their disappointment in certain releases. "Sorry, but the new LCD Soundsystem is the biggest disappointment of the year," Theboogieman631 wrote. "Time to get off Mr. Murphy's n--s." And Yoprince sounded off about several albums: "Glad to hear I'm not the only the Hold Steady fan who was a bit disappointed, which is to say a lot disappointed since they're like my favorite American band. Damn Craig for thinking it was time to start harmonizing. I still haven't been able to get all the way through that Gorillaz record. Janelle Monáe, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells FTW! And yes, I like the Drake record, which seems to be an unpopular opinion outside of teenagers and some very defensive blog writers. No Eminem? Fine with me. Too many tracks and Em fans won't admit it but some of those punch lines were more miss than hit."

Alicia Keys' BET Awards Performance Was 'Amazing,' Swizz Beatz Says

'She's taking it there,' fiancé recalls thinking as pregnant Keys climbed atop piano during Prince tribute.

It was one of the most talked-about moments of last week's BET Awards show. During a tribute to Prince, Alicia Keys sat at a piano bench singing "Adore." As the music seemed to be getting good — to Keys and the screaming Shrine auditorium crowd — the Grammy-winner, now barefoot, crawled up from the bench to the top of the baby grand. "They know you are my fix," the visibly pregnant Keys wailed.

The cameras caught every square inch of shock on Prince's face, as he and everyone else watched the still-graceful, but expecting Keys performing atop the keys. Prince then looked over smiling at A.K.'s fiancé, Swizz Beatz, also in the audience, with an expression that as if to say, "are you seeing this bruh?"

In New Orleans over the weekend, Swizz told MTV News he was just as surprised as viewers at the Shrine Auditorim (and at home) when Alicia scaled that piano. He said he had no idea she was going to do that.

"I didn't even see Prince looking at me at the awards," Swizz said. "But when I went back and seen the replay of the show, I was like, 'Man, he must have been in my head, thinking what I'm thinking.' 'Cause I'm like, 'Wow, that's crazy! She's taking it there.' But I thought it was amazing. I thought it was an honor and it was a blessing even to be in Prince's circumference of greatness. ... He is a great person and he's a great friend as well."

Keys performed at the Essence Music Festival over the weekend. She was one of the main headliners alongside Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson, who also performed on separate nights during the three-day festival. On Saturday, Keys' night, the singer slipped and fell during "Love Is Blind," but she recovered so quickly, without missing a single lyric, that it didn't matter to the crowd. Keys was on the ground only a couple of seconds and went on to continue a successful performance.

Lindsay Lohan Likely To Serve A Fraction Of Her Sentence

Right after Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating probation, a Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesman said she likely will only serve a fraction of the time.

Steve Whitmore talked to reporters outside of the court Tuesday (July 6) and said that, because of overcrowding, women sent to jail for nonviolent crimes generally only serve 25 percent or less of their sentence.

The exact time will depend on the wording of the judge's order and the level of overcrowding, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"A person [of] such notoriety will be kept away from the general population," Whitmore added.

Lohan, 24, also was sentenced to 90 days of inpatient rehab. The actress was tearful earlier in court before Judge Marsha N. Revel's sentencing.

"I wasn't trying to get special treatment," Lohan said in court. "I have to provide for myself. I have to work. Having said that, I did everything to balance my jobs and showing up. I'm not taking this as a joke. It's my life. It's my career. ... I take responsibility for my actions. I've tried to do the best I can. It's been such a long haul. I don't want you to think that I don't respect you."

Her plea wasn't enough. Lohan had failed to attend alcohol-education classes, and the judge also cited several instances from over the past few years, saying the actress lied about drinking and taking drugs.

"It's like someone who cheats but doesn't think it's cheating if they don't get caught," Revel said in court.

Lohan will serve her time in Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. She is scheduled to begin her sentence July 20.

David Banner Says 9th Wonder 'Made Me Wanna Do Music Again'

David Banner is feeling like a 2008 Dwyane Wade right now. The rapper/producer is putting the finishing touches on his 9th Wonder-assisted collaborative effort, Death of a Pop Star, his first new collection in nearly two years.

With a rekindled zeal for making music thanks to his work with 9th, Banner is set to revisit his most seminal LP, Mississippi: The Album, with hopes of delivering a redemptive effort à la Wade and his return to prominence after injuries slowed the star guard down.

"I'm working right now on Mississippi: The Album 3 — it's called The Trinity Movement," Banner told MTV News. "It's the best work I've ever done and it's because I'm coming off of Death of a Pop Star — the creativity coming off of Death of a Pop Star — and I'm able to go in a slightly darker place with me. 'Cause some of the things I talk about on my album, I wouldn't put that pressure on a 9th album — I think that responsibility should only be held by me. I have a lot of wild views and I know they're wild. They're meant to be. I would never put that on my friend. So I'm able to take that creativity and spin it off of 9th Wonder.

"It's like we playing basketball overseas for the USA and we win the gold — that's how I'm feeling," he continued. "I'm coming right off of that and going into my next album."

Banner said the strain of making music and operating within the major-label system proved to be a grind for the Mississippi-bred star, but he credited the North Carolina rapper with helping to restore his faith in music. Banner said he was set on living comfortably in Los Angeles and focusing on acting and commercial advertising opportunities — he recently scored a Gatorade spot.

"I had fun and gained a friend," he said of making Death of a Pop Star. "It made me wanna do music again."

Lindsay Lohan's 'Inferno' Director Bashes 'Outsized' Jail Sentence

'I am 100% behind Lindsay,' Matthew Wilder tells MTV News about his Linda Lovelace biopic star.

Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating probation on Tuesday (July 6), and one person offering the actress his unconditional support is Matthew Wilder, who will direct Lohan in "Inferno," a biopic about '70s porn star Linda Lovelace.

"This is a sad chapter in the ongoing tragicomic circus between the tabloid media and the 'justice' system," Wilder wrote in a statement to MTV News. "An outrageously outsized sentence garners attention for all the players involved, but brings only sadness to the poor soul who has to serve it. I am 100% behind Lindsay and can say the same for everyone involved in the production of 'Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story.' Indeed, we are proud to have this remarkable artist work on our film. And as for the haters relishing this moment, I can only quote Jesus in 'The Last Temptation of Christ': 'And those who are laughing now...will be crying after.' "

Regarding how Lohan's sentence will affect the "Inferno" production schedule, Wilder wrote that they will shoot when "this chapter is finished, and we'll all happily put it in our rear-view mirror."

Wilder has been steadfast with his support for his star. "I love her so much," he told MTV News in May. "I think she is so fantastic. I am amazed every day. I'll read some blurb in some gossip thing, and I will read the user comments that are so hateful. ... It's so weird. I think people have a really twisted, wrong impression of who she is, what she's all about, and the bottom line is that she is a brilliant actor. We've worked on this movie, rehearsed it, read it, and she is great. I think she is as good as anyone in her age group. I hope this will turn the story for her a little bit and remind people that this is someone who is serious about acting and who is really different from the cartoon portrayed in the tabloid press."

Hip-hop diva Lil' Kim is looking to collaborate with pop princess Rihanna. The MC recently opened up to Australia's Lifelounge about her dream collaboration and singled out the chart-topping singer as an artist she'd like to work with.

"I'm a huge [Rihanna] fan and she's a friend of mine, so I'm almost guessing — if I had to guess — I'm 90 percent sure that a song is probably in the works," Kim told the magazine's website, hinting that she and Rihanna may have already touched base about teaming up on a record.

However, Kim said that she's not stressing the potential collaboration and wants to spring the track on the world if, and when, the time is right. "I look at it this way: If it happens, it happens. And it should be a surprise. It shouldn't be something that people are anticipating, or have their own personal opinions on it before it even comes out," the rapper said. Whether or not a Kim/Rihanna collabo jumps off, the MC maintained that she has a lot of love for the singer. "I think she's great."

The potential collaboration is just another Lil' Kim matchup that has been thrown around. Earlier this year, Ludacris said that Kim and Nicki Minaj should hook up for a track and end the drama between the two femcees. "I think if Lil' Kim and Nicki Minaj do a record together it's gonna kill the entire industry," Luda told MTV News last month. "You don't have that many women in the industry so the lane is wide open."

Lindsay Lohan Sentenced To 90 Days In Jail

Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in a drug rehab center on Tuesday (July 6) for violating probation.

Before the sentencing, Lindsay Lohan stood in the court and became emotional. "As far as I knew," the tearful 24-year-old actress said, "I was in compliance with my programs."

She continued, telling Judge Marsha N. Revel: "I wasn't trying to get special treatment. I have to provide for myself. I have to work. Having said that, I did everything to balance my jobs and showing up. I'm not taking this as a joke. It's my life. It's my career. ... I take responsibility for my actions. I've tried to do the best I can. It's been such a long haul. I don't want you to think that I don't respect you."

It wasn't enough. The Beverly Hills judge ruled that Lohan violated the terms of her probation, which stem from a 2007 drunk-driving case. The actress failed to attend alcohol-education classes. Revel also cited several instances from over the past few years, saying the actress lied about drinking and taking drugs.

"It's like someone who cheats but doesn't think it's cheating if they don't get caught," the judge said in court.

Lohan's legal trouble date back to 2007, when she had her first drunk-driving arrest. The judge said she continually deceived officials. Revel said Lohan lied by pretending she wasn't the driver in that case. Two months later, the actress was arrested for drunk driving.

The judge also cited an instance when Lohan lied about being in possession of what ultimately tested positive for cocaine. Revel also was critical of the operator of the weekly alcohol-education classes that were mandatory for her, of which Lohan was said to have nine absences. She said Cheryl Marshall, who testified, failed to report Lohan's absences to the court before she had her bail revoked when the alarm on her alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet was triggered June 6.

Marshall told the prosecutor that Lohan didn't attend classes on days that she said she had, and she also told the court that Lohan never attended group meetings but instead chose one-on-one sessions because of privacy concerns.

Lohan must surrender on July 20 in Judge Revel's court.

Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' Video Partially Inspires Hazardous Circle-Contacts Trend

American Optometric Association has cautioned against circle lenses and other novelty contacts.

Lady Gaga's trendsetting fashion may have harmful consequences for fans who take the star's outrageous style too seriously. The New York Times reports that Gaga's bug-eyed look in her hugely popular "Bad Romance" video has inspired fans to seek out "circle lenses," contacts which make peepers seem larger by covering some of the whites of the eyes as well as the iris. The lenses are illegal in the U.S., however, fans have been obtaining the contacts online.

In addition to being illegal, the lenses apparently pose serious health risks and in a statement to CNN, the American Optometric Association has cautioned against donning circle lenses and other novelty contacts. "Consumers who purchase lenses without a prescription or without consultation from an eye doctor put themselves at risk of serious bacterial infection, or even significant damage to the eye's ability to function, with the potential for irreversible sight loss," the AOA warns. According to the Times, Gaga's wide-eyed look was likely a computer-generated effect.

CNN also reports that using non-prescription contacts such as circle lenses improperly is linked to a host of eye issues. Users can develop an allergic reaction, conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion and swelling, in addition to other vision and eye problems. The Times reports that while websites approved to sell contacts by the FDA must confirm prescriptions with customers' doctors, sites that sell circle lenses let buyers determine the strength and the color of their lenses.

The lenses, which give a doe-eyed appearance to people who wear them, are similar to the look characters have in Japanese anime films, and have long been popular in Japan and South Korea. In recent months the look has spread to the U.S.

"In the past year, there's been a sharp increase in interest here in the U.S.," Joyce Kim, a founder of Asian pop fan site Soompi.com, told the Times. "Once early adopters have adequately posted about it, discussed it and reviewed them, it's now available to everyone."

Gaga's wide eyes aren't the only eye-catching moments in "Bad Romance." The singer also sports glasses made of razor blades in the video as a nod to her no-nonsense pals. "I wanted to design a pair for some of the toughest chicks and some of my girlfriends — don't do this at home! — they used to keep razor blades in the side of their mouths," Gaga told MTV News last year.

Eminem 'Finally Did Justice' To Late D12 Member Proof With 'You're Never Over'

Rapper said he couldn't get tribute right before recording song from Recovery LP.

Eminem tried, and in his eyes failed, to pay tribute to his late friend and D12 partner Proof in the past. Though the subject of Proof's death in 2006 weighed heavily on his mind, Em couldn't quite figure out how to put it into words.

But on the "Road to Recovery" special on Sirius' Shade 45 channel last week, the rapper explained that on "You're Never Over," from his new Recovery album, he finally put the right bars together. Produced by Just Blaze, the song grinds along on fuzzed-out guitars and a spare beat as Em rhymes, "The days are cold livin' without you/ The nights are long, I'm growing older/ I miss the days of old, thinkin' about you/ You may be gone, but you're never over ... If Proof could see me now, I know he'd be proud/ Somewhere in me deep down, there's something in me he found/ That made him believe in me, no one can beat me now."

"For me, this is the most important song off the record," Em said of the tune in which he credits his "guardian angel" Proof (born DeShaun Holton) for inspiring him to keep going and not fall victim to his darker tendencies. "It's a dedication to Proof. It is one of those records that I tried ... I had several attempts at making. Every attempt just wasn't good enough. It was one of those things, I tried a bunch of records and it just didn't work. Like, 'This is not good enough, the rhyme's not crazy enough, the beat's not crazy enough.' When I finally got it, I felt like, 'Thank you, thank you, God for just giving me the strength to be able to write this record and make it feel like it does.' "

In an uncharacteristically gentle voice on the chorus, in which he sings, "I just miss you," Slim Shady does his best to croon out the dedication, though he was the first to admit that he's not a world-class singer.

"I guess as long as the emotion is there ... But it was one of those moments on the record where I feel like, 'OK, I finally did Proof some kind of justice by being able to put that together and dump my heart on the record,' " he said. "It was one of those things that when it got towards the end of the record, I really didn't even care about making the rhyme crazy, I just wanted it to say it."

'Predators' Star Adrien Brody Reveals Fiery Effects Scene

'Explosions are happening and you're running through walls of fire,' the actor says of on-set effects.

"I know that I'm not one of the guys on the studio's list for this movie," Adrien Brody told MTV News in March of his starring role in "Predators."

But his craft and his commitment to the role — he packed on 25 pounds of muscles to play ex-military man Royce — convinced director Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez that the Oscar-winning Brody was in fact the right guy for "Predators." They wanted to find a balance between a Schwarzenegger-esque action hero and a more grounded take on what a modern-day solider actually looks like.

That emphasis on realism extended from the cast to the actual production, which eschewed CGI fireworks for a practical approach to effects work. Almost everything you'll see in the film — from furious explosions to out-of-control fires as Royce and his crew battle those vicious alien predators — was executed on set rather than within the safe confines of a computer. And even with that extra weight on his frame, those practical effects made for a harrowing shoot.

"Explosions are happening and you're running through walls of fire with flame-retardant gels on," Brody told us recently. "It's hot. You see the flame bursts."

One scene in particular, in which Royce finds himself caught in the laser sights of the aliens, required such an inferno that the entire crew had to don protective gear just to get it done.

"That epic shot — it's also a great trailer moment — where all the lasers are on us and on Royce, we shot that indoors in the studio space and the entire crew had respirators on and masks," Brody said. "It was supposedly not hazardous, but I doubt it."

Not that he's complaining. "I think it creates a very exciting environment," he added. "You've got to do it and get the hell out of there."

Check out everything we've got on "Predators."
