M.I.A. Declares She 'Loves' Justin Bieber

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 03:50 AM PDT

New love songs like 'It Takes a Muscle' may have inspired her soft spot for the Biebs ... or not.
By James Montgomery

The lead-up to M.I.A.'s /\/\/\Y/\ album has basically been one long stream of bad PR, scurrilous spats and, uh, videos that depict things like the execution of redheads. So it may surprise you to learn that there's actually a pair of songs on the record that are actually, well, sort of nice.

"It Takes a Muscle" and "Lovalot" seem to be — on the surface, at least — about the trials and tribulations of the heart. So it seems that, deep down (and despite all the bluster), M.I.A. is actually a really sweet person. So in keeping with that spirit, we decided to ask her if there's anything else she really, truly loves.

"M.I.A. loves ... Justin Bieber?" she laughed.

Of course, we're not entirely sure we believe her. You'll remember, of course, that she once said that Bieber's videos were "more offensive" than her own aforementioned "Born Free" clip, and while she's since clarified her stance on Biebs, saying she meant it as "a joke," you still probably wouldn't peg her one who would succumb to Bieber Fever.

But then again, given her new album, we suppose anything is possible. Because /\/\/\Y/\ isn't just a new set of tunes, it's a new chapter for M.I.A. She's working with an entirely new team of producers, diving deeper into the sonic sample bin than ever before, and, most notably, she's actually singing this time around. Or at least that's what people are saying.

"It's sort of like [producer] Blaqstarr kind of encouraging me and making me comfortable to sing," she said. "And I think on my first album — I think, or I thought — that [songs like] 'Amazon' was me singing, and 'Paper Planes' was me singing, but I guess everyone seems to think I'm singing more on this album. I'm just singing louder."

Is M.I.A. really a Justin Bieber fan at heart? Tell us what you think in the comments!

'Inception' Director Christopher Nolan Reveals His 'Star Wars' Inspiration

'I want to try and give somebody in the audience the experience I had watching that film,' he tells MTV News.

The demented memory flipbook that is "Memento," the noir-ish freakery of Gotham City in "The Dark Knight," the intricately woven, epically scaled "Inception" — all this can be traced back to a formative experience director Christopher Nolan had at the cinema in 1977.

Seven years old at the time, Nolan took in a screening of "Star Wars." Nothing was ever the same.

"That completely changed movies for me," he told MTV News. "It changed everything, really."

Nolan had never seen a film that was so, well, intricately woven and epically scaled as George Lucas' space odyssey. "It created a world that lived on in your mind after you saw the film and seemed to have this limitless potential," he said.

And, as Nolan explains it over three decades later, he's made a career out of trying to instill a similar sense of wonderment for ticket buyers.

"I think, for me, my whole career in making films, really every time I set out to make a film, I want to try and give somebody in the audience the experience I had watching that film, where it really felt like anything was possible in that world," he said. "That's a really extraordinary experience to have as a moviegoer."

Nolan started out small, shooting "Following" on a shoestring budget with a bunch of friends. He graduated to "Memento," gaining some financial backing and the talents of professional actors. Eventually, Warner Bros. handed him the task of resurrecting the dormant "Batman" franchise. After delivering two blockbuster takes on the Caped Crusader, the studio basically gave Nolan a pile of cash and carte blanche to make a movie he'd been dreaming about for 10 years: "Inception."

As with all his earlier films, Nolan set out to deliver an experience that would create a world that lived on in the minds of moviegoers, that seemed to have limitless potential.

"I think that's the highest aspiration of the Hollywood blockbuster," he said.

Check out everything we've got on "Inception."

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Jay Electronica said there's no need for speculation: He is a part of the ever-expanding Dream Team super clique of hip-hop luminaries, which includes DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes and Diddy. Jay Elect recently released footage to the Internet, in which we get to see him and Diddy recording the underground banger "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace."

"I'm blessed, man," Jay told us in his hometown of New Orleans a couple of weeks ago. "I had records with Just Blaze, records with Puff. That record came from Twitter. I was on Twitter asking for beats through iChat. Quincy Tones [who produced 'Wallace'] sent the beat. I was sitting on that one line: 'The game ain't been the same since B.I.G. died/ And Wu swarmed on New York from out that beehive.' I had been sitting on that for two weeks. I didn't do nothing with it. Then I took a swim on it. I called Puff like, 'I'mma do this.' He said, 'Come to the studio right now. I need to get on that.' It was a crazy night. A lot of energy."

As you've heard, Jay spits audio fury for a little over two minutes, then Diddy takes over the track, talking greasy for the remaining four and a half minutes.

"I told him to," Electronica explained. "That's the Puff I love. That's the Puff I wanna hear. I grew up listening to Biggie records and all these other records. I hear both sides of the coin; some people like it, some people don't. He went long. We was supposed to go in the studio the next day with the engineer and only uses pieces. But I told him, 'Leave it all the way in.' I wanted it like that. A lot of times when I leave skits on there, it serves the same purpose. It's keeping the atmosphere and the energy."

Since "When I Was 17" premiered in May, we've heard celebrity stories of teenage heartbreak and hilarity, triumph and defeat, and OK, a whole lot of foolishness. Drake shared memories of his days rocking what he called a "terrible afro," Queen Latifah recalled the day she landed her first record deal, and Bret Michaels shared intimate details about the night he lost his virginity. This Saturday's episode brings us a tale of hope for the future — and a bit of terror at the present.

When "Drummer Boy" singer Debi Nova was 17, she emigrated from Costa Rica to Los Angeles. What she found in La La Land was enormously enticing and more than a little overwhelming.

"There was a very specific story that marked my coming-to-America moment," she explains.

The event took place almost as soon as her plane had touched down in California and she set out to get some household supplies.

"Very first week I get here, I go into the supermarket because I need some toilet paper," she said. "I go in the toilet-paper aisle and I'm like, 'OK, unscented, aloe vera, recycled, non-recycled, double-ply, triple-ply, four rolls, eight rolls, 12 rolls, 32 rolls. What do you want?' "

Tune into Saturday's show to hear more about Nova's first year in America, including the embarrassing time she failed her driver's license test. New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who already stood 6-foot-6 before he'd even hit his 18th birthday, and Ciara, who found out what it was like to be cheated on at the tender age of 17, are also featured in the new episode.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Debi Nova, CC Sabathia and Ciara — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Lil Wayne Expected To Be Released From Prison In November

A November 4 release would mean Wayne served eight months of his yearlong sentence.

Lil Wayne is approximately halfway through his one-year jail sentence, which began March 8 when the superstar MC turned himself into authorities after reaching a plea deal. According to prison records accessed by MTV News, the rapper has a projected release date of November 4.

Pending any violations or infractions for behavioral issues, the rapper is expected to see the light of day eight months after entering prison.

While Wayne has been away, however, his presence has remained potent. His protégé Drake debuted atop the charts with Thank Me Later, on which Wayne served as an executive producer.

The Toronto MC visited Lil Wayne in prison last month and told MTV News about the experience. "He kept looking to the window," Drake said. "He'd look up at the window almost like he's looking right through it. It's frosted, so you can't see out. I was like, 'Why does he keep staring through the window? There's nothing out there.' To him, there's a whole world moving out there that he hasn't seen for so long."

In addition to Drake, Diddy and Fat Joe have also ventured to Rikers Island to see Lil Wayne. Joe said the New Orleans native was in good spirits and appeared to be making the best of a bad situation through humor.

"He's doing fairly well," Joe told MTV News. "Way better than I thought he would be doing. He was telling me some crazy funny story about him and this older guy. They always going back and forth with each other, arguing. To hear him say it, it's like Archie Bunker [with this guy]."

Recently, Wayne's manager Cortez Bryant announced that an EP from the rapper would be released in September, and there are tentative plans in place for Tha Carter IV to hit shelves by the end of the year.

Another Wayne protégé and member of the rapper's Young Money collective, Jae Millz, said he expects his boss to get back to work right away on the day of his release. The Harlem rapper told MTV News that Lil Wayne is likely to perform a concert as soon as he gets out.

"That's the day," Millz said of the November 4 mark. "I hear when he comes home, he's hitting the stage. I hope they let him keep his inmate uniform. He needs to come onstage with that, the whole Bruce Leroy [jail attire] and take it off and throw all the jewels on and tear it down for everyone. 'Cause they waiting for him."

Are you looking forward to Wayne's release in November? Let us know in the comments.

The cast of "The Hills" shed countless tears over boys and broken friendships during the six seasons the hit show aired on MTV. But it wasn't all downs for the reality-TV stars; they had plenty of ups too, including the trips they got to take. When Lauren Conrad returned to the aftershow party to celebrate the "Hills" finale Tuesday night, she said one getaway in particular had become her favorite moment.

"I think it was Paris," LC told MTV News about the season-three trip she took with fellow Teen Vogue intern Whitney Port. It was an opportunity that she'd previously passed on to spend more time with her then-boyfriend Jason Wahler. "It was just this amazing moment that we got to get dressed up in gowns and attend a ball and take a motorcycle ride around Paris.

"And it was just this crazy experience for the both of us," she added. "I think that that I will always remember as my favorite moment on 'The Hills.' "

While Conrad remembered the romance of Paris, another onetime beau of LC's, Brody Jenner, fondly recalled his own (many, many, many) romances.

"Fondest memory? Kissing all the girls, man. Why not?" he laughed.

After all was said and done though, LC was happy with how the show came to an end.

"I think it's sad, but I think they had a great run," she said. "They went on for so long. I think it's nice they wrapped up everyone's story. It was a happy ending."

What was your favorite "Hills" moment? Tell us in the comments!

Ne-Yo took over BET's "106 & Park" on Wednesday evening (July 14), premiering two story-driven videos, "Beautiful Monster" and "Champagne Life." The singer promised MTV News last month that the clips accompanying his forthcoming album, Libra Scale, would form part of a larger overall visual narrative.

" 'Beautiful Monster' is one piece of a very long and intricate story," Ne-Yo revealed. "When you see the first video, make sure that you're paying attention because all of the videos tell a story. So pay attention — you don't want to miss nothing."

Under Ne-Yo and Wayne Isham's (Madonna, Aaliyah, Adam Lambert) direction, the clips present the singer as a member of a crime-fighting trio called "The Gentlemen." Ne-Yo is granted otherworldly powers by a mysterious figure (Columbus Short), who assures the three blue-collar workers that their new powers will remain active so long as they don't fall in love.

In "Beautiful Monster," Ne-Yo is portrayed as a disheveled superhero, à la Will Smith in "Hancock," who must battle his former flame Princess Sinclair in order to save the world from danger. Fans later learn in the "Champagne Life" video that Ne-Yo's superhero and Sinclair were once romantically involved. As a result, she assumed some of Ne-Yo's powers, but in adverse fashion. The transfer turned Sinclair into Diamond Eye, a "crazy, psycho mass-murderer," as Short's character describes her.

Short's shadowy character revisits Ne-Yo, now four years after first granting him those special powers, and offers the star an ultimatum: Both Sinclair and her alter ego, Diamond Eye, must die to save the world or Ne-Yo must reverse her curse and give up his own life to save the world. The singer then sets off in search of his onetime love and must make the difficult decision.

" 'Beautiful Monster,' in a nutshell, represents the love interest/ archnemesis in the story [of] Libra Scale, which the entire album is based off of," Ne-Yo told MTV News about the theme of the LP, due September 21.

Fergie, Enrique Iglesias, LMFAO, Lil Jon. The upcoming Jersey Shore Soundtrack, inspired by the show in all its tanned and tequila'd glory, boasts some of the biggest acts in music. But while "Jersey Shore" star Snooki has love for all of the featured artists, she had no problem naming her favorite track on the disc when MTV News caught up with her on the album release party red carpet at New York City's Marquee nightclub on Tuesday.

"My favorite track is obviously Pauly D's track," she told us about her fellow castmate. "It's his first track on an album, and I'm very proud of him."

But Pauly isn't the only "Shore" star with a new single. Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino has also recorded a club-ready song, in which he raps, "I ain't at a bar to get drunk alone/ I'm gonna take a hottie home."

"Mike's track is pretty good," Snooki said. "I'm proud of him."

She'd be happy to listen to either one while partying at clubs on the familiar Seaside Heights boardwalk or near the hot sands of Miami, where the cast traveled to shoot season two of their show. Just don't ask Snooki to pick which town has the hotter nightspots.

"Miami definitely has a lot of good clubs, and so does Jersey," she said. "The only thing that's good about Miami is they're open till 6 in the morning. Jersey closes at 2 a.m., so that kind of sucks."

And what of the clubgoers in each locale? When it comes to bumping-and-grinding and locking lips, which town comes out the winner?

"Better hookups, definitely Jersey," Snooki declared, "because that's where the guidos live!"

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

The final half-hour of "The Hills" saga wasn't brimming with the over-the-top drama fans had come to expect from the series. But a shocking twist at the end of the finale left many viewers with lingering questions.

After the final pained goodbye between Brody and Kristin, the "Hills" diva didn't ride off into the sunset as expected. Instead, a fake backdrop emblazoned with the "Hollywood" sign was rolled away and cameras pulled back to reveal a movie lot, as Kristin hopped out of the car — that should have taken her to the airport — and embraced Brody in a bear hug. The ending left fans wondering just how much of the reality show, which had captivated millions of viewers for years, was real. While some "Hills" followers liked the twist, others weren't so impressed.

"It was creative," Reyna commented on MTVNews.com. "I think it kept people talking."

LawGirl83 agreed, writing, "I knew it! That final [scene] was spectacular."

"I love the hills alot! The ending was great but goodbyes are always sad!" Kristina Bergmann wrote on the "The Hills" Facebook page.

"Kristin almost made me cry when she was with Brody saying good bye!"

"FREAKIN LOVED THE ENDING!!!!!!" Lauren Windey wrote.

However, many fans were simply puzzled. Noelle Ciemny wrote on Facebook, "I was so confused," adding, "I wish brody and kristen would be together theyre [adorable] together."

Kianna Green wondered, "Was it all fake?" while Joey Jakira Blum wrote, "I just dont understand why or what the point of the ending was."

Others, like Maya Willis, were conflicted about the show's final moments. "I was taken aback by the end scene, but honestly, how could you not know the show had its scripted and staged moments?" she wrote on Facebook, adding, "I do believe that there were some real emotions shown throughout the show and real arguments." Some strongly criticized the ambiguity of the ending. "[I] thought they should have answered the question straight up. The fans deserve to know!!" Nikah2o posted on our website. Still, for many fans, the way the show wrapped up wasn't as important as the fact that "The Hills" is gone for good. An anonymous poster on The Hills Gossip Online blog wrote, "I'm going to miss the hills!"

"I [choked] up a little," Suraya wrote on MTVNews.com. "It really ended," she added, tagging a sad-face emoticon onto her post.

Will you miss "The Hills"? Were you upset by the ending? Let us know in the comments!

It appears that the various rumblings regarding Lindsay Lohan's new legal counsel are true: The troubled star has secured experienced criminal defense attorney Robert Shapiro, who famously represented O.J. Simpson in his 1994 murder trial.

According to TMZ, Shapiro does not have plans to appeal Lohan's 90-day jail sentence but will try to convince Judge Marsha Revel to put Lindsay in a rehab facility and either eliminate or minimize jail time.

Shapiro's son Brent died of a MDMA drug overdose in 2005, and the website reports that the laywer has a specific plan and place in mind for Lohan: a live-in rehab facility with which he is said to be involved.

Shapiro has not yet shared his thoughts on his new client to any major media outlets, à la onetime Lohan attorney candidate Stuart V. Goldberg, who said the actress didn't understand what she was up against.

"My impression of Lindsay is that she's a fragile lost child — a sleeping beauty with her head in the sand," Goldberg told People magazine this week. "I found her not fully forewarned of the consequence of her actions. I'm concerned that she's not disciplined or tethered enough to the reality of adult consequences. ... She doesn't seem to have the awareness of what's going to befall her."

Shapiro did not respond to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Lohan must surrender herself on July 20 to begin serving 90 days in jail, followed by a 90-day inpatient drug rehabilitation program. Lohan's original lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, resigned shortly after the actress' sentencing.

'Inception' Stars Fondly Recall Slapping Leo, Sipping Tea For Film

HOLLYWOOD — The anticipation for "Inception" hit a fever pitch Tuesday night, when the film's stars descended upon the U.S. premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Tourists and fans alike crammed together, trying to catch a glimpse of the star-studded black-and-red carpet, backed by a continuous loop of Hans Zimmer's intense, ominous score. The stars of Christopher Nolan's latest mind-bender were less-than-ominous, however, when they shared the highlights of their experience working on the movie, which opens on Friday.

For Lukas Haas, the most fun aspect of shooting "Inception" was the stunt work ... and getting to slap his longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio in the face.

"I had to slap Leo a few times," Haas told MTV News. "I was a little hesitant [to do it]. He's been a friend of mine for a while. I pushed him in a big tub of water; it was fun. I loved the stunts."

The stunts were also a highlight for Tom Hardy, but for different reasons. "I got the pipe and slippers job," he admitted happily of playing Eames, an expert at assuming others' identities within dreams. "[Joseph Gordon-Levitt] took most of the weight of that. I got to sip tea and wear slippers."

When asked if he was harassed by fellow castmates for lounging around while they did all the work, Hardy said they hadn't, but he was happy to relax a bit, having just finished the upcoming cage-fighting flick "Warrior."

And though veteran actor Ken Watanabe did his share of stunts for the film, he was more frightened by the risks the movie posed to his mental state.

"I'm not a big dreamer, but after seeing the screening I had a nightmare," Watanabe told MTV News. "I woke up and felt like I had [been the victim of] inception from Chris Nolan."

Check out everything we've got on "Inception."

Drake's 'Fancy' Was Mary J. Blige's Song First, Swizz Beatz Reveals

Drake's new single "Fancy" almost ended up on two other albums before it finally landed on Thank Me Later.

" 'Fancy' has been well-traveled," said Swizz Beatz, who produced the song. "It started off as a Swizz record. Then I got Mary [J. Blige] on it. It was supposed to be on her [Stronger With Each Tear], but we missed the deadline. Then I pulled it back for my [upcoming] record. Then five o'clock one morning, on the phone speaking with Drake, he's in a different time zone, we're trying to figure out what he needs [for his album]. He's like, 'Yo, I just need a record for the ladies.' I'm on my computer playing him joints over the phone. Then I played him 'Fancy.' I was like, 'You want something like this?' But I was playing it as a reference."

On the original version of "Fancy," Swizz raps about an educated girl who works at the Guggenheim Museum, while MJB sang about an independent female. "She got it all together," Blige sings. "She don't need you to help her/ She got her own paper/ She don't need you to take her on a shopping spree/ My girl's fancy, fly and free."

Drake didn't want something like what Swizz played; he wanted that exact song for his album.

"He was like, 'That's the record I need,' " Swizz recalled. "I said, 'OK, I'll make you that.' " Drake replied: "No. That's the record I need."

Swizzy gave up the goods.

"I'm a producer first," Swizz said. "So he can have the record. I'm still on it, it's still love. He's a heck of an artist, and I feel no ways but honored."

The finished version of the song we hear on the album features Drake, Swizz and Tip, but at least one other MC was on the wish list to be on the song.

"Andre 3000 was supposed to be on 'Fancy,' " Swizz revealed. "Drake had a group of people he wanted to be on it: Andre, Tip, this one, that one. But the deadline for the album rushed a lot of things. [Drake] can tell you the rest, but Tip just wound up being on it. Which I'm cool with, cause that's the homie."

Drake is filming the videos for "Fancy" and "Miss Me" this week in Atlanta.

CC Sabathia Remembers An Epic Paint Fight On 'When I Was 17'

'I went and put a stripe on a girl's shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,' the Yankees pitcher recalls.
By James Montgomery

Back before he was throwing heat for the New York Yankees, CC Sabathia was throwing paint in the classrooms of Vallejo High School in California. And, as he explains on Saturday's all-new episode of "When I Was 17," he was just as good at it as he is at baseball.

"I remember one time in my junior year, in my art class, our teacher had us doing, like, finger paints, and I went and put a stripe on a girl's shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight," he laughed. "Paint all over the walls, all over everybody. It was pretty fun.

"The teacher was this short little lady, and she was screaming, 'You guys, stop!' and we kind of drowned her out," Sabathia continued. "I did a lot of bad stuff, I guess."

But, luckily, it didn't get much worse than flinging paint. Because back then, Sabathia — who stood 6-foot-6 and weighed 235 pounds and starred at not only baseball, but football and basketball too — could've done some serious damage. That wasn't really in his nature, though, and pretty much everyone who knew him back at Vallejo High remembers him as "a big teddy bear."

Of course, there was another reason he never really misbehaved: his mother, Margie, who was waiting at home every day and was more than willing to keep CC in line. And, thankfully for him, she didn't hear about the whole paint-fight incident until producers brought it up on "When I Was 17."

"Oh, man, I didn't hear about that one," she smiled. "See, there's some things they keep from you!"

Sorry, CC, hope we didn't get you in too much trouble.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring CC, Ciara and Debi Nova — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Kristin Cavallari, Lo Bosworth Call 'The Hills' Ending 'Spectacular'

'To see it come to an end is always bittersweet,' original star Lauren Conrad tells MTV News.

"The Hills" ended Tuesday night with a wink from the show's producers, and while it might have been a surreal way to end a show that was grounded in reality for six seasons, the stars of the show enjoyed the mysterious scene final scene.

Lo Bosworth, who has said that seeing the show again is like watching "home movies," had only one way to describe the finale. "The ending, I felt, was spectacular," she told MTV News. "I think the fans will forever question: Was it fake or was it real? And I don't think I will be answering that question."

"That day of filming, it was surreal to me, because they wouldn't tell me what we were filming," said Brody Jenner, who shared that an ending with Lauren Conrad had been shot as well. "I think the show has always battled with what's real and what's fake, and this ending was perfect, because you still don't know what was real, what was fake, and it's kind of like L.A., in a sense. I thought it was very clever, and I was happy with it. I was stoked they were ending it with me. I was flattered."

"I mean, I think we both couldn't have been happier with the ending. We were speechless," Kristin Cavallari said about the final scene, which saw her get into a waiting car destined for the airport and a plane to Europe — or so we thought. Instead of pulling away, the camera pans out to show the entire production, including crew members and cameramen. With the "fourth wall" dropped in the final moments, what does the show's original star, Lauren Conrad, think about the show ending after all these years?

"I think it's sad to see something that was so great, to see it come to an end is always bittersweet," she said. "But I think they had a great run. They went on for so long, and I think it's nice they wrapped up everybody's story and it's a happy ending."

M.I.A. Says 'Nicki Minaj Runs Hip-Hop'

'I just feel like I get her,' M.I.A. says of the Young Money MC.

M.I.A.'s brand of glitchy, warbling electro, zany fashion sense and singular vocals make the star one of the most eccentric artists on the scene. Perhaps that's why the controversial Brit has taken a liking to unconventional MC Nicki Minaj. The two joined forces for the remix of M.I.A.'s "Teqkilla" (a track she called "exciting"), and the artist said she was impressed by Minaj's imaginative approach.

"She's really creative with how far she's willing to go," M.I.A. told DJ Skee of Los Angeles' 102.7 KIIS-FM. "I just feel like I get her."

M.I.A. pointed to Minaj's willingness to put in work as the reason the MC has become an increasingly powerful force in hip-hop. "Nicki Minaj runs hip-hop," she said. "She works hard, and that's what it is. She's focused, and that's good. She's got really good work ethic."

M.I.A. is renowned for her unique style, but the singer has mystified some fans with the title of her latest album, /\/\/\Y/\. The singer acknowledged that the title's use of computer jargon may have rendered it less Google-friendly, conceding, "because of the 'forward slash' 'backward slash,' it's just not findable."

However, she asserts that punching out the moniker of her third studio album is actually very simple. "Everyone's got those keys. Everyone's got a 'forward slash' and everyone's got a 'backward slash.' It's actually a lot easier to write, 'cause you go [typing noise] 'Y' [typing noise]. You can write the album name with three keys," M.I.A. explained. The singer also said she was into the aesthetic appeal of the title. "I like it. I like it when you look on iTunes and you got the album title, and it's just made up of slashes. It looks good."

Carrie Underwood Says Her Wedding 'Exceeded All The Hopes I Had'

Bride changed into a cocktail dress for her reception: 'I wanted to get my boogie on,' she tells People.

Country princess and onetime "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood's wedding to Ottawa Senators center Mike Fisher graces the cover of People magazine this week and appears to have been every bit the fairy tale the bride envisioned for her big day.

Married Saturday on the lawn of Georgia's lavish Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation Resort, the happy couple exchanged traditional vows in front of 250 guests. Underwood told People the one thing she worried about above all else was keeping it together throughout the ceremony.

"My sister told me if I feel like tearing up to say the Pledge of Allegiance," she said. "I must have said it 20 times that night!"

The proud groom, who met Underwood through mutual friends at one of her concerts in 2008, said his bride looked simply "stunning" (dressed in a specially designed Monique Lhuillier gown). "I was thanking God for her, for that moment," Fisher, 30, gushed. "It's something I'll never forget."

When the couple finally sealed their vows with a kiss, the only objector among the 250 guests was Underwood's plucky rat terrier, Ace, who responded to the otherwise-enthusiastic applause by barking. "We were laughing, everyone was laughing, and Ace was barking," Fisher said.

For the reception, which was decorated with an overwhelmingly feminine, pink-hued touch, guests received their seating assignments via painted hockey pucks with their names written on an attached card. And Underwood changed out of her "huge" wedding dress in favor of a strapless cocktail dress — which Monique Lhuillier also designed. "I wanted to get my boogie on, so I had to change," the 27-year-old told People.

"The night exceeded all the hopes I had," Underwood said. "It was a great party."

Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and Sade will all grace the stage at the seventh annual Black Ball NY at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom. The event, which is mounted by Keys' Keep a Child Alive organization, will take place September 30.

"Sade? Jay-Z? Both icons and both major influences of mine. I am overwhelmed by their generosity in helping us continue the tradition of making the Black Ball the best fundraiser in NYC," Keys said in a statement. "There are more surprises coming up! Stay tuned!"

KCA also organized the Black Ball London this past May, where U.K. group Kasabian and British singer Bryan Ferry performed. The organization helps families struggling with HIV/AIDS throughout India and Africa and, since 2004, has generated more than $10 million. Keys co-founded KCA in 2003, and since then, the organization has assisted more than 250,000 people. KCA also provides financial support to orphan care and clinical centers in countries such as Rwanda and Uganda.

Last year's Black Ball in New York drew 1,000 guests, raised more than $2 million and was co-hosted by Keys, "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi and supermodel and entrepreneur Iman. The fundraiser was also held at Hammerstein Ballroom and honored former President Bill Clinton, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson and Senegalese legend Youssou N'Dour for their work fighting poverty and HIV/AIDS. Keys, N'Dour, John Mayer and Coldplay's Chris Martin performed. A range of celebs, such as Halle Berry, Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz, Nick Cannon, David Bowie, Spike Lee and Usher, came out to support the cause.

'Jersey Shore' Season Two Will Be 'Action-Packed,' The Situation Says

'This season is crazy ... it's like a movie,' the ab-tastic star teases to MTV News at soundtrack release party.

The Jersey Shore Soundtrack doesn't hit stores until next week — July 20, to be exact — but that didn't stop Snooki, the Situation, JWoww and the rest of the cast from taking over the Marquee nightclub in New York City on Tuesday night for an over-the-top album release party (like they needed an excuse, anyway).

But, still, there was business to attend to. So while revelers danced to the sounds of Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull's "I Like It" and downed drinks like "the Snooki Temple" (a DayGlo mixture of cherry vodka and grenadine), MTV News caught up with the Situation to discuss not only the album — and why his totally epic song isn't on it — but also season two of the "Jersey Shore."

"They really wanted me to be on [the soundtrack], they wanted my song, I think I was two weeks early or two weeks too late or whatever it was," the Situation explained to MTV News. "They really wanted it but we just couldn't get it together at the same time. I went off the grid."

While his self-titled single didn't make the cut, the Situation isn't letting the, uh, situation get him down. He's confident that the song will still be a big hit. In fact, he's just about to release an official remix of "The Situation" and shoot a video for it too. Though, to be fair, details about both seemed a little cloudy.

"It's doing real well on iTunes. We are doing a remix and a video," the Sitch said. "I don't know who the remix is with, but I know the video is gonna be pretty good and we're gonna have some cameos from a lot of different people. It's gonna be cool."

Also on the Situation's "gonna be cool" list: the sophomore season of "Jersey Shore," which premieres July 29 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "You know what, this [new] season is crazy. It's action-packed, it's like a movie. It's gonna be one of the best shows of the year, guaranteed," he said.

The Situation was so confident that season two will rule that he was even willing to invoke the catchphrase of the villainous Senator Trent from Steven Seagal's totally awesome 1990 flick "Hard to Kill" (or that of unhinged Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, for that matter):

"You can take that one to the bank," he smiled.

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

Muse Bassist Compares Being On 'Twilight' Soundtracks To Selling Soul

Chris Wolstenholme is ambivalent about soundtracks that have boosted his band's profile in the U.S.

After making millions of potential new fans thanks to the inclusion of their songs on all three "Twilight" soundtrack albums, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme may be risking the bloodthirsty wrath of the Twi-Hard Nation with some comments he recently made about the vampire sensation.

"I'm not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things, but sometimes you've just got to get your music out there in different ways," he told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat column.

Even with the films' box-office success and the massive exposure for the band, which is stadium-rocking huge in Europe but has not yet broken through in the same way in the U.S., Wolstenholme said he's not sure the trade-off has been worth it. "It's very difficult in America, because you don't have anything like Radio 1, nothing is national," he said. "You have to take every opportunity you get over there, and sometimes you have to sell your soul."

The group's "Supermassive Black Hole" was the lead track on the original "Twilight" soundtrack — and it played a pivotal role in the key baseball scene in the film — while "I Belong to You (New Moon Remix)" appeared on the "New Moon" disc, and "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)" is on the "Eclipse" album.

"Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer is an avowed fan of the drama-loving band and has said that their music inspired her writing, but Wolstenholme appeared ambivalent about how the music has been used in the films. He said he watched the original movie and "quite enjoyed it," even if it wasn't his "cup of tea," but he has not seen the two sequels.

When it came time to place "Neutron Star Collision" in "Eclipse," there appears to have been some confusion over where it would fit in that added to his uneasiness about participating in the project.

"When we were in the studio writing it, one minute they said they wanted to use it in the end credits, then they said they wanted to use it in another scene," he said. "Then it was another scene, and in the end, we were like, 'Do what you want with it, we don't care any more.' "

The comments were a bit of a turnabout from ones drummer Dominic Howard made in October, when he said the band was flattered to be the only group to appear on the first two "Twilight" soundtracks.

"It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us," Howard told MTV News. "We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix — it was before 'Twilight' came out. She's a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts."

At the time, Howard said that inclusion in the "Twilight" franchise had helped Muse reach out to "whole loads of new people that haven't heard us before. ... It's a nice side project to be involved in."

After moving up, rearranging and canceling a pair of North American dates due to the impending birth of Wolstenholme's fifth child, Muse are slated to be back on the road in the U.S. for a September 22 show in San Diego. And the bassist said things are finally breaking through for them stateside.

"It's going great over there," he said. "Early this year, we started playing in arenas, so it was great to finally take over the full production that we toured with in Europe. ... For a long time, America fell by the wayside and nothing was really happening at all, and we were having problems with our record company over there."

But with a full slate of dates through the end of the year, don't expect a follow-up to last year's Resistance any time soon. "The touring schedules are so crazy that just the thought of another album is just not even there at the moment," he said. "I'm sure [singer] Matt [Bellamy] has plenty of ideas, but physically trying to get together and work on stuff is just not possible on tour. ... The few days off we do have, we like to go home or go somewhere and chill out. We prefer to keep the two things separate and not try and think too much about recording when we're touring."

Joaquin Phoenix Documentary Gets Studio, Release Date

'I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix' will chart Phoenix's path from A-list actor to MC, studio exec says.

While fans of Joaquin Phoenix remain divided about whether to take the actor's rap music aspirations seriously — some saying his bizarre public appearances qualify him for "kooky actor" status, à la Gary Busey — he may get the last laugh. The documentary "I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix," has been picked up for distribution and release by Magnolia films, according to a recent report.

Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles confirmed to Deadline.com that the film, directed by Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck, is slated for a platform release on September 10, with a wide roll-out planned for a week later.

Bowles told Deadline's Nikki Finke that the film, which chronicles his evolution from A-list actor to MC, will surprise people — in a good way.

"No matter what I thought coming in, I came out feeling this was a pretty amazing piece of work, jaw-dropping but dimensional," Bowles said.

"It is going to get a lot of attention, but it is not some cheap stunt where they said, 'Let's do some wild stuff and film it,' " he continued. "It is extreme behavior but really good filmmaking as well. Frankly, some of the behavior is very extreme. But it is in the context of the insanity of being in Joaquin's life for that period of time. It is a unique piece of work that is going to surprise people in different ways."

Not too long ago, a credible hip-hop authority told MTV News that Phoenix's foray into rap was legitimate and that his career change was no hoax.

"If he's not for real, he tricked me," Diddy told us in May.

What do you think about Phoenix's career change? Are you convinced he's for real? Tell us in the comments!
