The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

The Game says he's about to put out music to make his rivals pump their brakes. He has a new mixtape, hosted by DJ Skee and produced entirely by Cool & Dre, ready to drop at the beginning of August called Brake Lights.

"We did this Drake record called 'Good Girl, Bad Girl' in L.A. during the BET [Awards] for The R.E.D. Album," Dre of Cool & Dre told us earlier this week of how the mixtape was conceived. "That record feels like an authentic Game record, something off The Documentary. It has that soul music. Him and Drake made a classic record. It feels like something the DJs would drop the needle on. What Game wanted to do was take the energy from that session and continue it.

"The R.E.D. Album is wrapped up," Dre continued of the August 24 album. "Sh-- sounds good. Pharrell gave him some heat, [DJ] Khalil gave him some heat, Dr. Dre gave him some heat. So what he's trying to do is 'Let's kill the streets with a mixtape before the album.' And he asked me and Cool to produce it for him. I always get on him, like, 'Yo, Game. One of these albums, man. Our track record is kinda all right. You should give us an opportunity to really go in with you, do the majority of your album.' "

"Every time, they'll be like, 'We ain't never did a whole mixtape with you,' " Game explained Wednesday night from his tour bus. "They said, 'We know Skee is gonna host it.' They was like, 'Let us supply all the tracks.' They started sending me tracks. Three one day, four the next day. I was bodying them joints back to back to back."

In just three days, Game had recorded 10 songs over the Miami duo's beats. Everyone loved all the cuts.

"Me and Cool will play a beat, and he'll turn that beat into an incredible song," Dre applauded. "We sent Game a CD with 15 joints. For three days he spazzed out. He sent back 10 to Cool, and Cool started mixing them."

"Mixtapes, you don't mix them joints," Game said. "You just throw them out. But Cool wanted to mix them joints, make sure all the vocals and the beats was right, well blended. We dropped the 'M.I.A' joint — the LeBron, D. Wade and Chris Bosh joint — on the Internet. The people went nuts. It was the first song talking about that. A shot in the dark I threw out there for the people, man. We buzzin'."

Game also revealed that one of his favorite records from Brake Lights is the title track, and he put a few guests in the mix as well. "I did a few collaborations," the Compton MC said. "I got something I did with [Lil] Wayne before he left. I got something with Baby. Always gotta have them a part of anything red. Them my dudes. Waka Flocka came through to jump on the mixtape hook. I got some stuff, man."

Dre is partial to a song Game has with Busta. "He's got a record with Busta Rhymes called 'Shot Down in Cold Blood,' " Dre described. "The beat is a beat we originally did for Kanye, for his new album. It's got a vibe, man. Through the whole song, Busta says, 'Shot down in cold blood.' Every two bars he says, 'Shot down in cold blood.' Busta does it in a Jamaican patois voice. Game just spits a bunch of sh--, which makes the 'shot down in cold blood' make sense. He has a feature on there I can't say.

"There's a record called 'People' that has Mary J. Blige on it," he continued. "That's soulful. It's a lot of soul-sample beats, which we're known for, on the mixtape. There's a lot of gangsta sh-- on there. Some 'Big Dreams,' 'Hate It or Love It' type sh-- is on there. You're getting a free Game album to get you ready for this R.E.D. Album."

Game says he wants to shoot a couple of videos for the mixtape when he gets off tour.

As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" have been revealed all this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can't express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied last week. Keep in mind: The names unveiled this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010," as voted by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the "Sucker Free Summit."

Chosen One: Diggy Simmons

Rising in the Ranks: Diggy Simmons snuck up on the rap game with a warning shot that rang loudly throughout the blogosphere. Rev Run's son paid homage to his dad's Queens stomping ground by snatching Nas' "Made You Look" beat for his own slick-witted freestyle. With the click of a mouse, the hip-hop community soon discovered Run's son was nice on the microphone. The accompanying viral video shot all around New York City shored up Diggy's bona fides, and soon, the teen Simmons was a hot commodity.

With the spotlight fully on the reality-TV star, Diggy became a staple at fashion events across the city, mixing his style of designer duds and youthful exuberance to score supporters like Kanye West.

The debut mixtape First Flight solidified his rap dreams and earned him a deal with Atlantic Records, officially following in his father's shell-toes as a major-label artist. Now, Diggy is readying his next mixtape, Airborne, a holdover for fans until he releases his still-untitled debut album.

Early Insight: "Each track I do, it makes me keep wanting to go, because there's always new people looking at my music," Simmons told MTV News. "I'm not a figure, obviously, like Jay yet or somebody like T.I. or something, where people are like, 'Oh, I'm gonna listen to the new song, of course. I heard a previous single.' I always have to come my hardest, because there aren't always people that have heard [about me already]. There's people that are newcomers. And you always want to make the best first impression."

Blistering Ballistics: "The flow I cater, it's something major/ An indicator of what happens later/ It's greater than you've anticipated/ Some people love it, the way I does it/ That's why n---as buzzing/ 'Cause they calling me sick, something like Robitussin/ I hear you coughing, I treat you often with freestyle/ And as I'm walking the people talking, they see now/ And I don't rap for my age like Lil Bow Wow/ The son of a king, so why would I ever bow down?" — from Simmons' "Made You Look" freestyle

Forecast: He might have been raised with a silver spoon, but the Run-DMC progeny is anything but a spoiled rich kid toying with hip-hop. He has the style, the social-network following and an elastic flow that could make his star burn as brightly as his legendary father's. Although he hasn't delivered another blow as big as the "Made You Look," freestyle, the kid is swinging for the fences, and it's only a matter of time before he connects with another one.

MTV News rolled out the top-five candidates for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" all week — the winner will be revealed on MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" Sunday at noon!

Pauly D Recalls Being 'Fresh To Death,' On 'When I Was 17'

'Loud music, nice cars, women — that was my thing,' 'Jersey Shore' star laughs on Saturday's episode.
By Eric Ditzian

"I was fresh to death!" Pauly D says.

He's not talking about his time cruising the boardwalks and stomping the dance floors of Seaside Heights on the first season of "Jersey Shore." No, the man with the most famous blowout in reality TV was deathly fresh back in his teenage years, as Pauly reveals on the upcoming episode of "When I Was 17," back when he was popping wheelies on his motorcycle, getting his first tattoo and DJing his first parties.

"Loud music, nice cars, women — that was my thing," he laughs.

Tying all these things together, it turns out, was a bit of an obsessive streak. "When I was 17, I had a little bit of OCD," Pauly says. "My closet was color-coordinated, my bed was made every single day, my pants had to have creases in them. I took a lot of time to get ready before school. The night before, I'd lay out my outfit that I was going to wear. Had to wake up early to take a shower, do my hair."

About that hair — it started out smaller and has grown over the years into the shellacked specimen we see on our TV screens today. "My hair was always spiked and gelled up, like a gentleman's blowout, where it was more controlled," he says. "Always had to be fresh."

Can you tell freshness is an ongoing aspiration for the guy? Take his devotion to his first motorcycle, which he bought at the age of 17 and polished up every day until the chrome shined like the summer sun down on the sands of the Jersey Shore.

"My mother was so against it. I knew she wouldn't let me get it, so I just had to go out and get it," he says. "It was a '92 Honda CBR-600. It was red and white — coolest thing in the world."

Far too cool, obviously, to risk parking outside during a cold winter, or even in an unheated garage. Instead, Pauly took drastic measures to keep his bike in top shape.

"I pulled it around the back of the house and I pulled it in my house," he explains. "I parked this motorcycle next to my fireplace. My mother flipped out. She's like, 'You better have that motorcycle out by Christmas Eve dinner.' I didn't! We kept that motorcycle there. I remember the Christmas tree was right there. ... We had our Christmas dinner next to that bike!"

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring "Jersey Shore" stars Pauly D, JWoww and the Situation — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

'Salt': Whack A Mole, By Kurt Loder

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:51 AM PDT

Angelina Jolie is back in action.

Angelina Jolie in "Salt"
Photo: Sony Pictures

There's no law that an action movie has to make sense — it can just be all action. "Salt" is a demonstration of this. However, the best action movies consist of more than nonstop frenzy, and they can sell their wildest implausibilities — James Bond with his jet packs and underwater tuxedos, Jason Bourne still alive in the sea after taking two bullets in the back — with a spirited blend of style, pace and personality. In its indifference to such elements, "Salt" is a demonstration of how important they are.

The story does kick off with a clever hook. Top CIA agent Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is in the middle of grilling a Russian intelligence operator named Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) when he tells her that the Agency has been infiltrated by a Russian mole, whose ambitious mission it is to destroy the United States. Salt asks Orlov the mole's name. "Salt," he says.

Two of Salt's fellow agents have been watching this interrogation, and they're naturally startled. One of them, Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber), say's he certain that Evelyn can't be a mole. The other, however, a hardass named Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor), isn't so sure. Salt herself doesn't stick around to explain — she takes off. All kinds of pursuers leap into action, and as the chase proceeds we marvel at her ability to dispatch hordes of heavily armed soldiers (all terrible shots) and her easy access to guns, chemicals and high-end designer clothing. (At one point in her flight, attired in a flowing fur-trimmed cape and matching hat, she looks like a fugitive from a fashion shoot.) She has also brought along a venomous pet spider. Well, her husband's pet spider. Her husband's name is Mike (August Diehl), and he's an arachnologist so esteemed, we're told, that he has "unlimited access to the border areas of North Korea." This would explain why he was on hand when Salt was freed from the North Korean prison where we'd seen her being beaten to a pulp in her underwear at the beginning of the movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain what the Norks have to do with the story, which seems to be nothing.

When it's not swamped in uproar — one damn thing after another — the movie attempts to maintain its focus on the Russian mole. Or moles, actually — because there's a whole nest of them, raised from childhood to become deep-cover saboteurs. (We see the devious nippers being schooled in the nuances of colloquial English by watching old "Brady Bunch" episodes!) At first we don't think Salt is one of these spies, but then it begins to seem that maybe she is. Anyone hoping for a resolution to this question should be aware that the movie is openly intended to be the first installment of a franchise. Stay tuned, presumably.

The picture is light on CGI and heavy on stunt work, a lot of it impressive. In one sequence, which must have been tricky to stage, Salt drops from a bridge onto the top of a speeding truck down below, then leaps onto the top of another truck, then onto a third, and then, down on the street, yanks a passing motorcyclist off his chopper and tears away on it. There's also a heavy-damage freeway chase that ends with Salt driving a car off an overpass and landing with a crash on a tangle of taxis (and then, of course, walking away). The Bourne movies also traffic in this sort of fantastical mayhem; but in those films, the action has a rush to it — it sucks us in. Here, Phillip Noyce, who directed the Jack Ryan CIA thrillers back in the early '90s, never quite closes the audience-action gap — we don't feel like participants, only observers.

The picture also makes puzzlingly little use of Angelina Jolie's skill as an actor — she's been directed to remain, for the most part, stone-faced and closed-off throughout. (Kurt Wimmer's script is no help: It seems to have been converted from the Tom Cruise vehicle it was originally intended to be with little more than a change in pronouns.) Jolie could have brought humor and emotion to this character; but the complex depths Salt is purported to have remain pretty much as inscrutable at the end of the film as they were at the beginning. Will all be made clear in the sequel (indicated by a rather Bourne-like conclusion)? We'll have to wait and see. Judging by this somewhat leaden opening installment, though, it may be a longer wait than the filmmakers had planned.

DJ Drama Is 'Digging' 'Sucker Free Summit' Nominee Wiz Khalifa

'It's always good to see someone put a city on the map,' Drama says of Pittsburgh MC's Mixtape of the Year nomination for Kush & OJ.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Wiz Khalifa's been bubbling in the underground for some time now, but the Pittsburgh native broke out this year with his stellar mixtape Kush & OJ. The collection earned him supporters as diverse as Miami rap star Rick Ross and Atlanta mixtape kingpin DJ Drama, not to mention a recent nomination for Mixtape of the Year at the "Sucker Free Summit." His fellow nominees include Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Jadakiss and Young Jeezy; winners will be announced Sunday at noon on ET on MTV2.

As Wiz enjoys his status as a rising young spitter, Drama continues to champion the upstart, calling him a fresh addition to the hip-hop landscape.

"I'm digging Wiz. I'm digging what he's doing, especially coming from a place like Pittsburgh," Drama told MTV News. "If you go to Pittsburgh — I've spent a lot of time there — for the last year or two, the first name that's coming up in Pittsburgh is Gucci Mane. It's not necessarily that [Wiz] is a product of his environment, but it's always good to see someone put a city on the map [like Wiz has]."

Back in April, Wiz's loyal followers, the Taylor Gang, bombarded Twitter upon Kush & OJ's release and made the tape a trending topic under the hashtag #KushandOrangeJuice." These days, the "This Plane" MC seems to be racking up nominations: He's currently a top-five contender in the race for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010," also to be announced Sunday. And Wiz isn't letting all of the accolades slow him down. He's in the studio working on his major-label debut, which he hopes will break him into the mainstream and help take his woozy rhymes up the charts.

"Just staying in the studio, always working, always putting out mixtapes, material for people to listen to, capitalizing off of whatever I do," Khalifa told MTV News earlier this year. "If something does well, you got to keep going after that. You can't get comfortable after that and think that's it. So just constantly working and reinventing myself, making smart moves — and having great fans."

"Sucker Free Summit" Mixtape of the Year Nominees:
Wiz Khalifa - Kush & OJ
Lil Wayne - No Ceilings
Fabolous - There Is No Competition 2
Jadakiss - The Champ Is Here 3
Young Jeezy - Trap or Die 2
Gucci Mane - The Burrprint: The Movie 3-D

Tune in to MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" on Sunday at noon to find out who wins!

'Salt' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 03:50 AM PDT

MTV News has been chasing down details on this Angelina Jolie thriller since it was announced.
By Eric Ditzian

Angelina Jolie in "Salt"
Photo: Sony Pictures

Two thrillers will collide this weekend at the multiplex as Leonardo DiCaprio's current box-office champ "Inception" zooms into battle against Angelina Jolie's "Salt." Both flicks feature serious firearms, brutal hand-to-hand combat and enough high-tension stunts to have even an audience-goer reaching for some Tylenol after the credits roll.

That's probably where the similarities end. Whereas "Inception" is the cinematic equivalent of a nesting doll, each layer opening to reveal another hidden dream world, "Salt" is a straightforward thrill ride — eschewing a densely layered plot and CGI wizardry for 90 minutes of chases, gunfire and catch-me-if-you-can theatrics.

MTV News has given chase since the beginning, following the rather odd journey of "Salt" from its inception to its arrival on the big screen. Before hitting the theater this weekend, check out our cheat sheet for everything you need to know about "Salt."

How Edwin Became Evelyn
"Salt" stars Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent specializing in Russian cat-and-mouse espionage. When a purported Russki defector shows up at headquarters and suggests Jolie is in fact a sleeper agent with plans to assassinate a world leader, she's forced to go on the run to clear her name. Unless, of course, she really is a double-agent ... duh duh duuuuh!

"Salt" keeps you guessing about Jolie's true identity, and the filmmakers themselves juggled various identities for her character as they struggled to get a green light for the picture. Evelyn Salt was originally Edwin Salt, back in 2007 when producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was trying to get Tom Cruise to play the part. But di Bonaventura couldn't get a studio to bite — until the filmmakers decided to switch the spy's gender and recruited Jolie to take on the role.

"You certainly have to do work on her character [in the script]," di Bonaventura explained to MTV News. "Yes, that was hard work. But it was even harder with the characters around her. First, we did her character and said, 'That works, but everyone else seems kind of off.' So then we had to go back and do everybody else. It was a much larger undertaking than we previously expected."

My, How You've Changed
Filming kicked off early in 2009, and we got our first look at Jolie as Salt early in March.

It wasn't until the fall, though, that the first trailer for the film dropped. What we saw was an A-lister in full-on action-hero mode: rigging MacGyver-style weapons, blowing up tons of stuff and throwing herself off freeways onto speeding trucks.

It looked like dangerous stuff, and it was: Jolie ended up with a bloody cut on her face after a particularly perilous stunt that got her a trip to the emergency room. But it was worth it for the type of realistic action she and director Phillip Noyce were gunning to achieve. Just check out Jolie flying onto that oncoming 18-wheeler, using a rejiggered fire extinguisher to blow away the authorities and tasering a cop in an effort to get him to drive his car off an overpass while she's still in the backseat.

There's a Badass in All of Us
"Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "Wanted" — Angelina Jolie has done the action-star thing before. But at this point in her life, with six kids at home, she took particular pleasure in her "Salt" stunt work.

"Maybe it's because I spend so much time at home with the kids that I really like to get out and jump on something and not be Mom for a bit," Jolie told MTV News. "My kids are watching and rooting for me, so I want to impress them and be cool."

It wasn't just the stunts that attracted Jolie to the role, but the chance to play a character with such complex allegiances — one who keeps you asking, "Whose side is she on?"

"Maybe that's why I liked it so much, getting to play this character," she said. "I got to be all different people all the time. I think there is [a complex] element to all of us. That's why we like espionage."

Then Jolie added: "There's a badass in all of us. I've certainly got mine."

Check out everything we've got on "Salt."

SAN DIEGO — Comic-Con coverage kicked off in full force Thursday (July 22) as the MTV News team attended the hottest panels and spoke with the biggest stars. One of the major highlights was our live-stream broadcast with MySpace, in which we received such illustrious guests as Bruce Willis, Karl Urban, Seth Rogen, Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo.

Willis and Urban were on hand to talk about their movie "Red," the star-studded live-action adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's 2003 comic series. At one point during the interview, Willis and Urban got into an in-depth conversation about how many bodies pile up in the film (they couldn't agree on a number). Willis also talked a bit about "Die Hard 5", while Urban expressed enthusiasm about being considered for the lead in the new "Judge Dredd" film.

Comic book fan (and now comic book movie star) Seth Rogen was full of energy and excitement when he stopped by to discuss "Green Hornet." Asked whether the film really was as difficult to pull together as it seemed form the outside, Rogen seemed to imply that, indeed, it was — but the cast and filmmaking team pulled together to make it happen.

"Yeah, it was exponentially more difficult, but the fact that we all hung in there and kept working on it is a testament to the fact that we really like it and that ultimately we all kept thinking it was worthwhile and the idea was good enough to keep plowing forward with," he said.

Last but not least, MTV News and MySpace welcomed "Machete" director Robert Rodriguez and star Danny Trejo to talk about the film that started as a "fake" trailer in Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" segment. The director mentioned that he felt he had to write the film backward in a sense, in order to incorporate all the footage from the trailer and have it make sense in a full-length feature. Another highlight was Rodriguez giving an update on his upcoming projects, which might include the "Deadpool" movie.

And this is just day one! Check back Friday at 3 p.m. ET/ noon PT for another Comic-Con live stream.

MTV News and MySpace are live at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con! Have you ever wanted to chat him up about his favorite pair of vintage Cazal sunglasses? Perhaps you have some real questions about how he parlayed his laid-back flow and easy cool to become one of the hardest lyricists in the game. On Friday at 1 p.m. ET, fans will have the chance ask Ross all of their questions directly during the first-ever edition of "RapFix Live," a live-stream series.

Ross will take questions instantly from a live Twitter feed and fans will be able to watch an unedited, real-time interview with the hip-hop heavyweight. In addition to the live-stream series, hip-hop fans will be able to satisfy all of their music needs with the official launch of MTV's RapFix blog, at RapFix.MTV.com, on August 2.

Ross has already established himself as a major Web force with mixtapes like his The Albert Anastasia EP, which is packed with street hits, including "Blowin' Money Fast (B.M.F.)" and "MC Hammer." And earlier this year, Ross told MTV News that he always keeps his Net following in mind and would continue to create his popular online-only videos saying, "You know we'll never stop releasing those black-and-whites, those virals."

With the "RapFix Live" stream, Ross fans, whose main access to the star was via those black-and-white visuals and lyrically potent mixtapes, can chop it up with the MC in a very accessible yet unique viral capacity. The Ross event will kick off a new series of live streams featuring some of the biggest artists in hip-hop today. Justin Bieber To Guest-Star On 'CSI' Season Premiere

CBS is about to get a lot more dreamy. The perfectly coifed teen dream that is Justin Bieber just inked a deal to guest-star in the season premiere of "CSI," according to E! Online.

The pop star will play Jason McCann, a "troubled teen who is faced with a terrible decision regarding his only brother — a decision that leads him into an explosive confrontation with the CSIs. It is the beginning of an emotional story that will conclude later in the season," CBS told E!

Bieber seems to be up for the role. The 16-year-old — who is in the middle of his My World Tour, which stopped in Los Angeles this week — tweeted Thursday, "Morning world...we got the acting coach here....learning 'a new craft.' "

CBS also seems pretty excited about getting Bieber on the forensics drama. "Every 20 years, a phenomenon like Justin Bieber graces our world," the network's Carol Mendelsohn, Don McGill and Anthony Zuiker wrote in a statement. "We'd like to believe that the phenomenon of CSI has had the same impact on popular culture. The opportunity to bring them together in the premiere is a great treat for our audience and all of its new viewers. This will be true event television."

The multiplatinum young singer is following in the footsteps of another chart-topping pop star: Taylor Swift also appeared on the long-running TV show back in March 2009. On the show, Swift played a brunet country singer named Haley Jones, whose family owned a seedy Las Vegas motel.

The new "Tron Legacy" trailer that arrived with Disney's San Diego Comic-Con panel Thursday (July 22) showcased the company's forward-thinking approach to applying new visual effects to vintage properties.

Despite the fact that actor and comedian Patton Oswalt took the microphone to moderate, the film's cast and surprise "Haunted Mansion" director Guillermo del Toro emphasized new technologies and serious approaches to their projects.

"It was pretty wild, pretty psychedelic," "Tron" star Jeff Bridges told the San Diego Convention Center audience. "You can play yourself at any age, whether it's an old man or an infant. To be in this groundbreaking movie where the idea for that has really been born is really an exciting thing."

Bridges referred to the fact that he plays two roles in "Tron Legacy" — that of his original character Kevin Flynn and Clu 2.0, who is meant to look like Bridges from the original "Tron" in 1982.

"I was attracted to this one for the same reason I was to the first one," he said. "It appealed to the kid in me."

Bridges, along with Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner, sat on while Disney unveiled eight minutes of "Legacy" in 3-D, which director Joseph Kosinski and "Tron" creator Steven Lisberger were also onboard to present.

"There's a lot of intensive training that went into this," said Hedlund, who plays Bridges' son in the movie. "I think I started the first week of January, and we didn't start filming until April 6."

The panel went on to involve audience members in a recording session that technicians from Skywalker Sound plan to use for the film's final cut. The actors watched as the crowd shouted "Disk Wars," "Rinzler" and "Derez" aloud and stomped their feet for effect.

Further surprises came toward the end of the "Legacy" discussion when two other Disney properties appeared in the spotlight. A release date for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was confirmed for May 20, 2011, and Oswalt announced del Toro as the director of a new "Haunted Mansion" movie to be filmed in live-action 3-D.

"To me, the Haunted Mansion is the most precious real estate on earth," del Toro said, revealing that he's been to the Disney attraction every year since he was 3 years old. "This is a place where I go to when I need to think or I need to relax.

"We're making the Haunted Mansion the most haunted place on earth," the director stated, declaring that his film would part ways from the comedy in Rob Minkoff and Eddie Murphy's 2003 film of the same name. "We are not making it a comedy. We are making it scary and fun at the same time, but the scary will be scary."

In that respect, del Toro will be taking the Haunted Mansion name into the style of filmmaking that has defined his career — with quirky effects and chilling themes throughout movies like "Pan's Labyrinth," "Mimic" and "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."

He'll also be taking on something with a great deal of personal meaning. "This, to me, is a dream come true, and I hope to steal as many props as possible," he said.

T.I. Honors Fiancee In 'Got Your Back' Video -- Watch It Here!

In the new clip, featuring Keri Hilson, recently incarcerated Tip shows love to the women who stand by their man despite legal woes.

Art imitates life in T.I.'s latest clip, "Got Your Back," in which the Atlanta rapper rhymes about a lover holding him down during arduous times.

The clip begins with a couple sitting in a sterile courtroom, the man seated before the judge and his love, tearful, sitting in the row behind him. The video then segues to another couple, showing the female love interest having lunch with her man at his loading-dock job. The visual transitions again to the pair making the best of what legal troubles have done to their lives: She shares a laugh with her incarcerated love during a visit to him in jail.

Whether it's the easy bliss of one romance or the strain of another, the clip represents how both women get his back.

"This is for the women who man caught in a sentence," Tip raps to the sing-songy beat. "Who gonna be there for a minute/ But they didn't keep their distance/ They stayed home, waiting on the phone/ And on visit day, they show up looking good/ Smelling better, playing kissy-face/ Just wanna let you know we appreciate/ Everything that you do for us on the day to day."

In the very last frame, as Tip is rapping, the recently freed MC's fiancée, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, makes a surprise cameo, walking out from behind the Atlanta superstar.

"Got Your Back" is the latest offering from T.I.'s forthcoming King Uncaged album, due next month. The number follows "I'm Back" and "Yeah Ya Know (Takers)." Currently, the rapper is locked in the studio with a couple of A-list producers, trying to eke out a few more tracks before he drops his new project.

"We got a few big, big, big sessions coming up next week: Timbaland, Swizz Beatz," T.I. told MTV News recently. "I'm trying to show up and show out every time."

'Batman 3' Can Go In 'Any Direction,' 'Dark Knight' Star Aaron Eckhart Says

Christopher Nolan 'is up against it, because he made such a good movie with 'The Dark Knight,' ' Eckhart says at Comic-Con.

SAN DIEGO — Any news that will come out of Comic-Con about Christopher Nolan's upcoming "Batman 3" project will most likely be presented at Saturday's Warner Bros. panel, but that didn't stop MTV News' Josh Horowitz from trying to get some information from "The Dark Knight" star Aaron Eckhart. The actor who played Batman villain Harvey "Two-Face" Dent stopped by to chat with MTV about his 2011 flick "Battle: Los Angeles," and talk quickly turned to his upcoming projects.

Turns out, Eckhart doesn't have anything on the docket for March or April of next year, when "Batman 3" is allegedly set to begin filming.

"I'll give Chris a shout-out. You know, I'm available," Eckhart said, earning a laugh from his "Battle: Los Angeles" co-star Michelle Rodriguez. "Or [James] Cameron. Ridley Scott. ['Battle: Los Angeles' director] Jonathan [Liebesman]; I don't know what he's doing. I'm available."

Since Two-Face was last seen dead at the end of "The Dark Knight," it isn't a big surprise that Eckhart isn't the most knowledgeable about Nolan's plans, but any comic book fan will say that "death" is never the end for villains. The loss of Heath Ledger, whose Joker was supposed to return in "Batman 3," however, did mean Nolan had to find a new villain to be the centerpiece of the final installment in the rebooted franchise.

"Obviously, the script was meant to bring back Heath, and unfortunately that can't happen, so I think starting over is a good thing," Eckhart said. "I'm excited to see. Chris is up against it, because he made such a good movie with 'The Dark Knight,' that he's got to really come up with something good."

Speculation about the "Batman 3" villain started immediately after "The Dark Knight" was released, and the latest rumor pins "Inception" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Riddler. Eckhart couldn't speak to that rumor specifically but said he thought that the opportunity to start fresh was good for the film.

"Chris, he's an exceptional filmmaker from start to finish," he said. "Whenever I hear stuff like that [Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Riddler], if Johnny Depp's going to play the Riddler, I'm into it. I feel like he can go in any direction."

When asked if he thinks his time is done in the franchise, Eckhart avoided the question by giving a shout-out to Rodriguez being in the film. Horowitz asked if she should play Catwoman, Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn, but Rodriguez wasn't having it.

"I say we come up with our own superheroes," she said. "I think it's time for something new, man."

Travis Barker Says New Blink-182 Album Will Be Out Next Year

Drummer will juggle finishing off his solo album with work on the new record by his band.

Last month, Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus made waves when he promised that [link type="content" id="1642163"]new music from the band was "on the way,"[/link] and that, after almost seven years, the wait for their next album was mercifully entering the homestretch.

"Blink-182 is full-steam ahead!" he wrote on his blog. "In June and July we will be at the rehearsal spot, getting ready for the European tour this summer, and writing new songs. When the European tour is finished, we head back and play ONE SHOW in Southern California. Then that is IT for live shows for the rest of 2010. Why? Because we'll be in the studio recording the new Blink-182 album. Until it is finished."

It seemed pretty definite ... but when MTV News found ourselves on the set of Blink drummer Travis Barker's new video — for "Carry It," which will appear on his long-delayed solo album — we got a little worried. If Trav was here, who was laying down drums at Blink rehearsals? And who would be playing on the new record?!?

Of course, we had to ask him ... and luckily, he assuaged our fears. And, much like Hoppus, he promised that 2011 will mark the return of Blink.

"We are in rehearsals — what will soon be production rehearsals — for our European tour, and that's exciting," he said. "[The new record] is gonna be [out] next year, so we're gonna start on it right when we get home [from tour.]"

Barker added that, despite the fact that he's rehearsing with Blink and gearing up to promote his solo album, neither project will be put on the back burner. That's just not the way he operates.

"I love juggling stuff. It's in my best interest to stay busy," he said. "I don't like downtime, and I love playing music. So it doesn't even feel like work."

Kid Cudi, Vampire Weekend & Best Coast Stars Talk 'All Summer' Collabo

Occasional 'frustration' of fusing their varied musical styles makes it 'a good summer song,' says VW's Rostam Batmanglij.

Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij didn't really know what to expect when it came to collaborating with Kid Cudi and Bethany Cosentino of surf/pop outfit Best Coast. But the star was taken aback by how chill it was to make their song "All Summer."

"I was nervous, so I had a couple ideas. I had some production ideas and some lyrics ideas and some melodies," Batmanglij told MTV News on Tuesday at New York's Bowery Ballroom, where Cudi and Cosentino joined him to perform the song. "Bethany and I just started ... vibing off each other. It actually was kind of scary how easy it was."

When Cudi came into the recording process, Batmanglij and Cosentino had already had their initial vibe session, but the Cleveland rapper decided to shake things up a bit and put his stamp on the collaboration.

"I was surprised when Cudi was like, 'I wanna rap over that.' I was like, 'You wanna rap over that part? That's not the part [for you],' " Batmanglij laughed. Eventually, Batmanglij let the "Day 'N' Nite" MC approach the track his way, admitting that the final result worked out. "He was so right," the VW multi-instrumentalist said.

Combining the beachy rock of Best Coast, the hazy hip-hop of Kid Cudi and the sunny, tribal-pop of Vampire Weekend to create the ultimate summer jam is a tall order. And the trio knew it.

"[There were] moments where it could have gone all bad ... just all of us just being creative people," Cudi observed. "But I think since the energy was good ... we all found a way and we hit a couple brick walls but we found ways around it."

Batmanglij thinks those bumps in the road actually brought some character to the record. "I think that's what kinda makes the song a good summer song because there was frustration and there was tension," he said. "Hopefully, that's a little bit captured in the song. Summer's, like, f---ed up; it has its ups and downs."

But don't think the trio won't get back in the studio together. Cudi said he'd love to work with the musicians again and Bethany already has an idea for the next collaboration: "The sequel to this song is called 'Next Summer.' "

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr didn't waste any time getting down the aisle. It was just a month ago that the pair confirmed they were engaged, and on Thursday (July 22), it was reported that they have already tied the knot, according to People magazine.

Kerr, a 27-year-old Victoria's Secret model, and Bloom, a 33-year-old actor, are currently on their honeymoon, Kerr revealed in a statement. The model canceled an appearance at David Jones, an Australian department store.

"David Jones very graciously released me during this period so we could celebrate an intimate ceremony and honeymoon together," Kerr writes in the statement. "I'm very much a part of the David Jones Family and I am very committed to my role. I am enormously grateful to David Jones to have been given this time to enjoy such a special moment in my life."

The couple have been together since 2007. "We were friends for a while, and then it just developed into a little more," Kerr told Hello! magazine back in September 2008.

It wasn't until April 2008 that the now-newlyweds made their first showing as a couple, at Sydney, Australia's Doncaster Day at the Randwick Racecourse, and the same weekend, People reports, the actor also met her parents.

The twosome tended to dodge questions about marriage, and as recently as last Thanksgiving, which they spent together in Morocco, Bloom told reporters they were "just enjoying our time together now" when he was asked if they were getting married soon.

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys plan to hit the altar eventually, but the producer/rapper denied rumors that the pair will get hitched this weekend on a yacht.

"The wedding is not this week," Swizzy told People magazine Wednesday. "People are very creative [with gossip], but it's cool. We have fun with this stuff."

As for whispers that the musical duo will marry on a yacht, the super-producer said it's all talk. "[The rumors are that] we're taking a boat to do this, and we're like, 'Man, who's paying for that?' " Swizz said.

Keys and Beatz plan to become husband and wife and are expecting their first child together, but the beatsmith insists he's not taking the reins when it comes to his Keys' career. "I am one trillion percent not managing my fiancée," Swizz said, responding to rumors that the MC was stepping into the role after Keys recently split from her longtime manager, Jeff Robinson. "I'm not a manager."

Swizzy might not be controlling his Grammy-winning lady's professional moves, but the hitmaking pair do enjoy collaborating musically. Swizz recently told MTV News that the duo keep it impromptu when it comes to recording sessions.

"Me and AK, we just love music," Swizzy said. "When we in the studio, we work on a lot of things that ain't planned. We was just in the studio vibing on some stuff for her album, vibing on some stuff for my album. We might use it, we might not use it. Anytime we in the studio, it's just musical genius, minds connecting on another level, which is always cool."

Mel Gibson Texts Ex: 'I Wasn't Safe For You Last Night'

Actor reportedly asked Oksana Grigorieva how her teeth were after fight.

After a series of explosive recorded telephone conversations in which Mel Gibson threatened ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva and showered her with a string of expletives and racial epithets, the latest wrinkle in the unfolding saga is a series of purported text messages in which the troubled actor appears to admit he is struggling to remain composed.

Gossip site RadarOnline.com, which has been slowly rolling out the tapes, posted what it claimed was a series of text messages between Gibson and Grigorieva from earlier this year in which the "Lethal Weapon" actor writes to the mother of his 9-month-old daughter, "Oksana, I wasn't safe for you last night."

Gibson is at the center of a domestic-violence investigation by Los Angeles authorities, and Radar claimed the text message was a key part of the investigation. The text was allegedly sent the day after the actor punched Grigorieva twice in the head while she was holding their then-2-month-old baby.

The "safe" text reportedly came at 3:25 p.m. January 7, the day after the alleged incident. "I spent two hours with a therapist today and have regained some perspective," Gibson, 54, reportedly wrote to Grigorieva, 40. "What I'm telling you know [sic] is I am safe & would like to come by and make amends to you, [son] Sascha and [the couple's daughter]. I won't stay, just let you say your peace and I'll say mine."

While a spokesperson for Gibson has offered a "no comment" on the tapes — though he did not deny that the out-of-control voice heard on them is that of the Oscar-winning actor/director — his lawyers have denied that he ever hit Grigorieva.

In several of the tapes, Gibson is heard making what sound like death threats against Grigorieva, and in one, he says she "f---ing deserved it" when she complains about him hitting her while she was holding the baby.

According to Radar, Grigorieva was ordered to surrender her cell phone — which holds the texts — to authorities as part of the domestic-violence investigation.

After six messages from Gibson with no response, Grigorieva reportedly responded, "I have two broken front teeth and a concussion. I can not c u today, I'm hurting. U can apologize to Sascha some other time." He then is alleged to have sent five texts in response, including one in which he begged to see her and asked, "Did you get them (the teeth) fixed yet? ... When can I see you? I need to see you this evening & then I promise I'll leave you alone for as long as you want."

The Los Angeles Times reported that as part of the domestic-violence probe, Grigorieva is being investigated over claims that she attempted to extort money from Gibson. Grigorieva's camp has denied the allegations.

Rage Against The Machine To Rock Against 'Racist' Arizona Immigration Bill

Tom Morello says that when he and his Rage Against the Machine brethren first heard about the passing of Arizona's controversial SB 1070 immigration bill, they knew they had to do something about it.

So the band decided to do what it does best: bring the sound and fury.

In tandem with Sound Strike — an organization that calls on musicians to boycott the state until SB 1070 is repealed — Rage organized a benefit show set for Friday in the band's hometown of Los Angeles. Considering the heft of the situation (and the fact that the gig will be RATM's first L.A. appearance in 10 years), well, you can expect that it's going to be a pretty monumental evening.

"Sound Strike is artists united against Arizona's recently passed, racist immigration legislation," Morello told MTV News on Wednesday. "[And] Rage Against the Machine are playing our first show in 10 years in our hometown of Los Angeles to support activists within the state of Arizona who are against this legislation. We're playing with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, and it's going to be a pretty fantastic time."

Morello said that all proceeds from the show, which is already sold out, will go to the Sound Strike Fund, which directly supports the Arizona-based organizations PUENTE Arizona and The Florence Project. And he promised that fans will be in for a fiery night. After all, the stakes are high, and the band's anger is even higher.

"Rage is playing just one show in North America this year, and the reason we're doing it is to stand up against legislation that just reminds me of the worst aspects of apartheid," Morello said. "It's a soft-core apartheid, so we're going to rock until that f---ing thing's kicked out."

What do you think of Rage Against the Machine's stance on the Arizona immigration law? Let us know in the comments!

DJ Drama, Rocko Shout Out 'Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010' Finalists Travis Porter

'They really did it from the streets on up,' Drama tells MTV News of rising Atlanta MCs Quez, Ali and Strap.

"Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" finalists Travis Porter have scored fan acclaim, millions of YouTube hits and a prized position as one of the most promising underground acts around with their swagged-out hip-hop.

On their way to top-five "Breakthrough" status, the Atlanta trio have been making a lot of noise with their fresh, dancefloor-ready style, and a number of industry figures are hearing them loud and clear. DJ Drama bigged-up the crew's ability to realize their big dreams via nonstop hustle.

"They really did it from the streets on up," Drama told MTV News in June at the star-studded ATL Birthday Bash concert. "They're the type of artists that, for the last couple Birthday Bashes, might have even been in the crowd like, 'Yo, we going to be on that stage, we going to be there next year.' They worked hard, they grinded it out. They put a couple mixtapes out [and] let the streets pick it up. Hence, here we are now — they got national, international hits."

The Travis Porter fellas had a brush with mainstream fame when they appeared on an early version of the rock-tinged hit "All the Way Turnt Up" with fellow "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" nominee Roscoe Dash. Dash eventually ditched the Porter boys for Soulja Boy, and the newer version of "Turnt Up" launched the party-startin' rapper to stardom.

The Travis dudes, however, didn't stay focused on Dash and didn't fall off their game. They've since built a following of loyal fans, dubbed the Differenter Gang, who get it poppin' to tracks like "Go Shorty Go." Also, TP are still doing the collabo thing with other up-and-coming hitmakers like Waka Flocka Flame and the recent release of their mixtape Proud to Be a Problem.

Fellow ATL rapper Rocko, who's worked with stars like Young Dro and Dem Franchize Boyz, said the Porter appeal lies in the boys' commitment to doing things their own way.

"Shout out to Travis Porter. I feel like that because they're different," Rocko told MTV News at Birthday Bash. "They outside the box. They let off the attitude ... 'You gonna like us or hate us. Either way we gonna do what we do.' They different and that's what they do," the "Umma Do Me" rapper said.

MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" on Sunday at noon!
