Lindsay Lohan To Report To Jail Today

Actress is expected to serve at least 23 days of her 90-day sentence.

Lindsay Lohan has been here before. The troubled actress knows what it's like to spend time behind bars in Los Angeles, but unlike her quick, 84-minute trip to the all-female Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, in 2007, beginning Tuesday (July 20), the "Mean Girls" star is expected to do at least 23 days of a 90-day sentence on probation-violation charges.

And because she will be in protective custody in the special-needs unit to prevent any harm to her from other inmates, Lohan, 24, is likely to spend up to 23 hours a day alone in her 12-by-8-foot cell. Despite tabloid reports to the contrary about other inmates eagerly anticipating her special arrival, a number of lawyers told MTV News that jailers will likely go out of their way to make sure no harm comes to Lohan in order to avoid any potential litigation.

The same jail that housed Paris Hilton, Khloé Kardashian and Nicole Richie during their brief stints behind bars will greet Lohan with a harsh reality, as she'll be locked alone in the 2,200-bed facility in a room with only a small window, toilet, sink, table and bunk. She'll have to wear the standard orange prison jumpsuit and give up all jewelry during her stay as well, along with cell phones and computers.

According to AOL News, Lohan won't have access to makeup, a TV or a phone in her cell, though she will be able to use a pay phone for a few hours each day and can have friends and family visit on weekends. And aside from her one weekend visit, the only other contact she'll have on a daily basis is with her lawyer and jailers, since she'll likely be alone during her one hour a day of exercise outside, weather permitting.

Reports have described the jail as dark and grim, with celebrity inmates complaining about the lousy food and noisy screaming that occurs during the night.

Due to overcrowding and likely credit for good time, Lohan should be out in just over three weeks, or in time for the September 3 premiere of "Machete," in which she plays a nun. She won't walk the red carpet, though, since the judge in her case ordered that she got straight from jail to 90 days of inpatient rehab, meaning she won't be able to start work on the Linda Lovelace biopic, "Inferno," until she's completed her entire sentence.

In the days leading up to her jailing, Lohan was spotted checking into a sober-living house. After reportedly shopping around for a lawyer who might be able to help her avoid jail time following Shawn Chapman Holley's resignation, Lohan settled on O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Shapiro, who said he only took the case on the condition that Lohan agree to serve her jail and rehab terms.

Wiz Khalifa Is A Top-Five Finalist For 'Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010'!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2's 'Sucker Free Summit' Sunday at noon.

It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can't express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010," as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the "Sucker Free Summit."

Chosen One: Wiz Khalifa

Rising in the Ranks: When Wiz Khalifa talks gang affiliations, it's not about red or blue. It's the yellow and black: the colors of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins of Pittsburgh. The past couple of years for Khalifa have brought constant elevation, not just with his daily fruits and vegetables (the green kind), but in the public's awareness of him and his artistic acumen.

Wiz spent 2007 and '08 waiting to drop an album on Warner Bros. Records that never materialized. He kept his name in the streets and on the Internet by releasing a slew of mixtapes in the interim, developing a small cult following. Wiz's fans were eventually dubbed the Taylor Gang, after a group of MCs he was down with in Pittsburgh. Last November, he put out an independent body of work called Deal or No Deal as a sort of declaration that he would make it in the game regardless of whether he had the backing of a major label.

Deal spawned the popular "This Plane," which has been soaring in the past few weeks with a video on MTV Jams and, of course, online. The blogs and Twitter is where Wiz has thrived unlike any MC in his peer group. The Taylors have been very active with their rabid love for Khalifa. His Kush & OJ mixtape was so heavily downloaded and talked about when it came out in April (just in time for 4/20) that it became a trending topic on Twitter and Google.

Wiz's musical appeal lies with his melodies and his lovable stoner mentality.

Early Insight: "There's certain cities where you have that hometown pride. Pittsburgh is just one of those cities where you go hard for anything that's Pittsburgh," Wiz explained. "Knowing that everybody's got my back and knowing that I keep it real with everyone back home, 'cause I still live in Pittsburgh, so people still see me every day. People see me at the gas station, eating wherever everybody's eating. I sign autographs and take pictures, but I'm still a regular person. I never thought I was going to be that dude — you know, to really put Pittsburgh on the map — but it's cool."

Blistering Ballistics: "I live life sucka free/ That's why them n---as you be wit talk down like they don't f--- wit me/ I get money realistically/ And the homies show me love/ Groupies wanna leave the club wit me/ Ain't nothin' to a G/ Let your hair blow in the breeze/ Roll some bomb-ass weed." — from Khalifa's "The Kid Frankie"

Forecast: The tide has definitely turned in Wiz's favor. His Internet presence is steel-cage solid, and his fanbase has been steadily growing. Now his big-homie peers, such as Rick Ross, have taken notice and are calling him for features. The biggest thing Wiz has on his side right now is freedom. He's a free agent, making his next album at his leisure and with his own creative vision. Kush & OJ is being heralded as his best project to date, so his follow-up is pivotal. Besides the aforementioned album, Wiz has also been crafting his mixtape Cabin Fever (think more private jets than out in the woods), so the sky can literally be the limit.

MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" on Sunday at noon!

Rick Ross Tells The Story Behind Drake's Extended 'Aston Martin Music'

Ross tells Mixtape Daily we might see the unofficial track on a Teflon Don re-release.

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Rick Ross' Teflon Don LP came out Tuesday (July 20), and by now, if you've been listening to the radio and the mixtapes, you've already heard the extended version of "Aston Martin Music," a highlight of the project. The track features Chrisette Michele and Drake sharing hook duties. On the extended version, which is not on the album, Drake adds a rap verse.

Ross stopped by our 1515 headquarters on Monday to explain Drizzy's extra vocals.

"It boils down to me having the idea, the concept," Ross said. "Shout-out to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I got the production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I wanted to do something else, two-seater music. That's what I like to call it when it's personal music for you and that special female that's riding shotgun in a two-seater. Chrisette Michele, she was on 'Mafia Music 2.' She came to Miami to film the video. I got her in the studio to do the first half of this idea I had, which is 'Aston Martin Music.' She was like, 'What you mean just do half of the chorus?' I was like, 'Yeah, just do half. I'mma save the other half.' "

Trusting Ross' direction, the singer got in and laid the vocals we hear today: "Riding to the music, this is how we do it/ All night/ Racing down the freeway/ Just me and my baby/ In our ride."

"She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics," Ross continued of Michele's session for "Aston Martin." "It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I'm sitting there like, 'Wow. All right, all right.' At that point, I didn't know who was gonna sing the second half."

The Bawse said listening to Drake's new album, in his leisure time, inspired him to make that call to his friend from Toronto.

"I sent it to the homie," the Miami rap lord described. "He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, 'I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I'mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, 'I'm finnin' to go in the studio, Ross. I'mma need to get on that.' "

A version of the song with just an extended chorus and Drake's verse called "Paris Morton Music" came out shortly after "Aston Martin Music" leaked to the Net almost two weeks ago. "I talk slicker than a pimp from Augusta," Drake raps on the track.

Then, one of Ross' engineers mixed Drake's verse and extended chorus with the album version of "AMM," and that song has lived on the Net and mixtapes ever since. It's also getting play on the radio.

Ross said he has no problems with an unofficial extended version of "AMM" being out. He might even include it on a repackaging of Teflon Don in the future.

"It's only right," Ross said. "I got on [Drake's] first single ['Find Your Love']. He even put a twist on the title after some sexy ladies, I believe. It made it feel good. That's what that music is about. On that re-release, that deluxe packaging, that's what you may get. You never know."

More sad news for Big Star fans. Almost four months to the day since Alex Chilton's sudden death comes the loss of original bassist Andy Hummel. According to Dallas website DFW.com, Hummel died Monday (July 19) after a two-year battle with cancer.

Current bassist Ken Stringfellow broke the news, tweeting: "Another sad loss for Big Star fans as Andy Hummel passes away after long illness."

Jason Elzy, a representative with Big Star's label, Rhino Records, confirmed the report to MTV News: "Sadly, I can confirm this is true. Andy has passed away."

The Memphis-born Hummel, along with singer/songwriter Chilton, guitarist Chris Bell and drummer Jody Stephens (who is the only living original member), formed the rock band in 1971, and their uniquely layered power-pop/rock influenced a generation of bands, including R.E.M., Wilco, the Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Primal Scream and the Posies, whose Jon Auer and Stringfellow helped re-form Big Star in 1993. R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck famously said, "We've sort of flirted with greatness, but we've yet to make a record as good as Revolver or Highway 61 Revisited or Exile on Main Street or Big Star's Third."

Big Star influenced other areas of pop culture as well. "In the Street," one of the songs from their 1972 debut album #1 Record was the theme song to "That '70s Show," re-recorded by fellow power-pop legends Cheap Trick. Plus, the title of Katy Perry's hit "California Gurls" is a nod to Big Star's "September Gurls."

"My manager, Bradford, he's from Mississippi, and he's a huge Big Star fan," Perry said. "And with the death of one of their members [Chilton], I had just written that song, and he's like, 'Katy, just for me, will you please title it 'California Gurls,' with a 'u'? People won't even know!' "

Hummel was 59. Services will reportedly be held near his home in Weatherford, Texas, on Wednesday.

Share your memories of Big Star and Hummel in the comments.

On July 8, 2010, these words changed it all for NBA fans: "This fall I'm going to take my talents to South Beach..."

LeBron James made his now infamous decision to join friends and fellow free agents Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat and shook up the world, at least when it comes to professional sports.

Fellow athletes Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan have weighed in, and so have a plethora of your favorite MCs. No one seems more excited than Miami native Rick Ross. MTV News has received footage from the night of James' live ESPN special. While on the road promoting his Teflon Don LP (in stores Tuesday), Ross, on his tour bus, watched King James' announcement.

In the footage, which was shot by Ross' video director Spiff TV, Ross, hearing James reveal his plans, jumps up as if he were watching the former #23 make a game-winning shot in the seventh game of the NBA finals. Ross, wearing a black T-shirt, jumps out of his seat with his eyes and mouth wide open and both his arms extended with his hands balled up in fists.

"I told you!" Spiff yells. Meanwhile Def Jam executive Kendell "Young Sav" Freeman sits on the tour bus couch with a disappointed look on his face and says "damn." Ross' manager, Gucci Poochie, stands up and smiles. "Wow," he says.

"God is great," Ross says, holding his Blackberry, readying a tweet. "It's over for the next decade, baby. 305. Wade County. Chris Bosh. The King James. And it's gonna be Ricky Rozay on the wood! I ain't in the stands, I'm on the wood! I'm at all the games, baby. Maybach Music. I'm on Miami Heat now. Miami Heat, let's go, baby. 305, Wade County!"

Monday (July 19) morning, Ross was saluted by James, who tweeted lyrics from Ross' new record, "Free Mason."

"My top back like JFK, they wanna push my top back like JFK," James wrote on his page. "So I JFK, join forces with the Kings and we ate all day!"

Ross responded on his page, writing, "Kings!!!!!! @KingJames bron bron. JFK!!!!"

'Scream 4' Has A 'Perfect Setup,' Hayden Panettiere Says

'For an audience that is so well-versed in 'Scream' ... it's trickier to throw them a curveball,' she tells MTV News.

With filming of the fourth chapter in the "Scream" franchise under way in Michigan, fans are hard-pressed to find out new details about the fourth film's notoriously mysterious plotline. However, when MTV News recently caught up with Hayden Panettiere, she said she's confident the filmmakers are doing the previous movies justice and that the process so far has been a blast.

"I think it's just perfect timing, the amount of time that has passed since the last one came out," the former "Heroes" star told MTV News. "It's a perfect setup, with all of these films ... the [fictional] 'Stab' [movies] and all the things like that. I think with all of the 'Scream' [films], the idea is to throw the audience for a loop every time."

Panettiere acknowledged that for savvy audiences, the surprise factor is an even bigger challenge this time around.

"For an audience that is so well-versed in 'Scream' [films] and in what happens and who becomes the killer, blah, blah, blah, it's trickier to throw them a curveball," she said. "I think they've done a really cool job with the script. We've had a blast on it."

Panettiere also heaped praise on her castmates and director Wes Craven. "Wes Craven is, he not only is the nicest human being, but he's a brilliant director. And it's all the original cast as well: Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox and David Arquette. We've got an incredible new cast that's come in, and we have a pretty good team." The spunky actress said she couldn't reveal too much about her character Kirby, only that she's "edgy, sassy and smart. She's a very strong character."

Other key players in the star-studded cast include Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson and Marley Shelton. "Scream 4" is scheduled to open April 15, 2011.

Nicki Minaj Is A Top-Five Candidate For 'Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010'!

Chosen One: Nicki Minaj

Rising in the Ranks: Nicki Minaj went from working at Red Lobster to being the red-hot current face of female hip-hop in less time than it takes to complete college. She's as much an iconic figure for her standout fashion and beauty as she is for tearing up the mic alongside your favorite MCs. Her rabid following has bought into Minaj's entire package. The hype is backed by true talent, and she's unique and feisty. And while every photo you see in the press personifies her glamorous life as a Young Money superstar, Minaj is no different from every other MC who has ascended the heights of their genre. The native of New York's Jamaica, Queens, neighborhood started at the bottom and had to grind her way to the top.

First discovered by Lil Wayne on the street-DVD series On the Come Up, Nicki couldn't get any love from DJs in her hometown, so she moved to Atlanta. It was there she recorded some verses for Weezy's Gangsta Grillz: Dedication 3 mixtape — singing and rapping on songs such as "Still I Rise" with the rest of Wayne's then-mostly unknown crop of new talent, including Drake. Nicki also aligned herself with Gucci Mane, adding heavily to her street credibility and profile.

While her sexy image was our first impression of Nicki (who can forget that bathing-suit photo in which she paid homage to Lil' Kim?), Minaj really found her own lane during the spring of last year with the Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape, which she put together with Atlanta's DJ Holiday. Nick showed us she has boundless personality on the mic, bringing forth her Barbie persona and all the charismatic outfits, rhyme flows and vocal inflections that go along with it. Records from the tape — "Kill the DJ," "I Get Crazy" with Lil Wayne and "Itty Bitty Piggy" — bubbled on the streets for months, allowing Nicki to hit the club circuit with her own shows.

In the summer of last year, Nick was spotlighted on the Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival, and by the fall, seemingly all the guys in music wanted to get with her. Minaj's career went to the next level when she started turning in show-stealing cameos, which have carried well into this year. Diddy, Robin Thicke, Ludacris, Sean Garrett, Usher, Jadakiss, Trey Songz, Gucci Mane, Sean Kingston and, of course, her Young Money family all know that she's developed into one of the most versatile performers in hip-hop — and she still hasn't released her debut album, which is due late this year.

Early Insight: "With [my debut] album, I think it's more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again," Nicki said. "People don't even know what a female rapper does. We're so not used to seeing it. We don't get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come."

Blistering Ballistics: " Now all these bitches wanna try and be my bestie/ But I take a left and leave 'em hangin' like a teste/ Trash talk to 'em, then I put 'em in a Hefty/ Runnin' down the court/ I'm dunkin' on 'em, Lisa Leslie/ It's goin' down, basement/ 'Friday the 13th,' guess who's playin' Jason?/ Tuck yourself in, you better hold on to ya teddy/ It's 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' and guess who's playin' Freddy?" — from Ludacris' "My Chick Bad"

Forecast: Nicki, who is also a member of the Diddy-led all-star Dream Team, didn't get an overwhelming response for her debut official single, "Massive Attack," but the misstep did nothing to hurt her popularity. Her follow-up, "Your Love," is already a #1 hit (with no video yet!). It was a leaked track that the fans loved so much, program directors on radio were forced to add it. Minaj is working on her yet-untitled first album with Young Money and Swizz Beatz. If she continues to attack her own tracks with the fervor she does on her guest appearances, the LP should be a hands-down winner.

MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit" on Sunday at noon!

It goes without saying that the inner workings of the film business are a mystery to most of those on the outside looking in. Sometimes, even the individuals closest to the projects are left in the dark — particularly with regard to movie release dates.

Such is the case with Zac Efron's "Charlie St. Cloud" moving into the release date previously held by girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens' "Beastly." When MTV News caught up with Efron to talk about "St. Cloud," we asked him what he thought of his film taking over the "Beastly" weekend.

"It was disappointing," Efron said. "It was hard. I actually had to break the news to her. I was like, 'I think we are moving on to your date.' ... She took it really well, but it's hard when that kind of stuff happens. We don't, as actors, have any control over it, so we'll see. I mean, hopefully it will work out for the best. 'Beastly' is a great movie, and when it does come out, people are absolutely going to love it."

In talking to MTV News about her film being pushed to March 2011, Hudgens was equally diplomatic. "I just didn't feel right about us having movies coming out on the same day," she said. "It's just not right."

It could have been fun for a little friendly competition, though. "True," Hudgens admitted, "but, I don't know, I just don't think it's fair to either of us."

She added that the delay has given filmmakers the time to perfect the film. "We're actually going to be doing some re-shoots and changing it up a bit, so hopefully we'll make it that much better."

What do you think of the release-date shuffle? Are you glad you won't have to decide between "St. Cloud" and "Beastly"? Let us know in the comments!

Waka Flocka Flame 'Hard In Da Paint' Video Premieres

'Whatever the fans grab, I'm running with it,' the rapper says of choosing his singles.

Waka Flocka Flame is used to a certain amount of chaos surrounding his environment. The Atlanta-based rapper premiered his latest video for "Hard in Da Paint" on Sunday on MTV2, and in the clip the production was shut down by gang activity and police presence.

The Benny Boom-directed number was shot in Los Angeles in the Jungle, a neighborhood made infamous courtesy of the Denzel Washington flick "Training Day."

"I go hard in that mother----ing pain, n---a, leave you stankin' n---a," Waka raps on the track.

Earlier this year, the upstart rapper and Gucci Mane protégé was shot and hospitalized after an attempt on his life when Waka stopped at a local carwash. However, the flamboyant rapper recovered and has kept his buzz building with a slew of mixtape material, including "Hard in Da Paint."

"Whatever the fans grab," Waka said about his process of deciding which songs will be singles. His first two records originated from mixtapes and they proved to be what the streets gravitated toward.

"Whatever they grab, I'm running with it," Waka told MTV News earlier this year.

"They grabbed 'O Let's Do It,' so I feel like they can grab the next one. I don't go to the studio like, 'Oh, this is a hit. This is a hit!' Nobody in this world know what a hit is. When I dropped 'O Let's Do It,' nobody knew it was a hit. The only person that knew it was a hit was my mama [also his manager]. All the music I ever did, she was like, 'I like that one.' I was like, 'That commercial song? Heck no. I hate that song.' "

Lil Wayne, Paris Hilton, T.I. Provide Pre-Jail Playbook For Lindsay Lohan

There's a reckoning that needs to happen before you surrender to authorities for a jail term. Whether you're a celebrity or an average Joe, affairs have to be put in order, plans need to be made, and goodbyes have to be said.

But if you are a celebrity, there may also be a lot of business you have to complete before surrendering your freedom. And with Lindsay Lohan less than 24 hours away from reporting to a Los Angeles jail to serve a 90-day sentence for probation violations, it's worth noting how other celebrity inmates spent their final hours before going in.

Lohan is expected to serve only 23 days of her sentence, due to chronic overcrowding at jail facilities in Los Angeles, to be followed by a 90-day term in an inpatient rehab facility, meaning she is likely to be out of the star machinery full time until the fall. With only one major project on her docket at press time — the Linda Lovelace biopic "Inferno" — unlike other celebs, Lohan isn't leaving behind a lot of unfinished business.

In contrast, before he began serving a one-year term in March on a gun charge, rapper Lil Wayne was a dervish of activity, filming seven music videos in one day, hitting the studio to lay down tracks that might show up on an upcoming EP, hopping onstage with Young Jeezy, Nicki Minaj and Drake at Madison Square Garden and attending various parties.

Before going in for his one-year bid on gun charges, T.I. spent his time filming the MTV show "Road to Redemption," on which he attempted to put some wayward souls on the straight-and-narrow, and logging time at more than 260 public appearances talking to youth groups, churches and schoolkids. He also joined Young Jeezy and Ludacris onstage at a peacemaking show in Atlanta and spoke out against gun violence.

Gucci Mane also spent time in the lab just before he went away for a year on probation-violation charges, finishing up work on The State vs. Radric Davis.

Then there was Paris Hilton, who did what she always does the night before she was locked up as a result of a parole violation for DUI arrest: She partied. The golden-haired heiress walked the red carpet at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards, bucking those who expected her to shamefully slink to jail by spending her last hours of freedom basking in the limelight. "I decided to do something nice before I went off," she told MTV News of her 23-day jail sentence at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, California, the same jail that will hold Lohan. While Hilton was released after five days for medical reasons, the judge summoned her to reappear in court and ordered that she be sent back to jail to serve her full sentence.

It was mostly business as usual for Khloé Kardashian, who was sentenced to 30 days in jail for a DUI. The youngest of the reality-TV sisters spent the weekend before her incarceration at a beach-house party in Malibu with her mother and sister Kourtney, where she got a massage.

Lohan, typically seen at several Hollywood hot spots a week, has kept an unusually low profile in the days leading up to her jailing, which will be considerably longer than the 84 minutes she spent in lockup in 2007 on a drunk-driving offense. Last Thursday, she was spotted checking into a sober-living facility, which she appeared to be staying in until she reports Tuesday.

Too Short Addresses Idaho Nightclub Arrest

'The incident that night was completely taken out of context,' rapper says of reports that he was socializing with underage females.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Last week, Too Short was arrested and charged with three counts of misdemeanor battery after a scuffle broke out between the star and his associate and club security at the Boise, Idaho, Knitting Factory. According to the Idaho Statesman, witnesses said the fight started after security informed the star that bringing underage women backstage and into his dressing room was prohibited. The MC was released from custody after posting bail.

Too Short (real name: Todd Anthony Shaw) recently spoke out about the incident and blasted reports that suggested he was inappropriately fraternizing with young women. "The accusations against me regarding my arrest in Idaho on July 15th were untrue and exaggerated," the rapper told XXL magazine in a statement. "Due to my work with young people in Oakland, I am extremely outraged at the way I am being portrayed. The incident that night was completely taken out of context, and I have not and never will take advantage of any woman that is underage."

The MC also said he wanted to maintain his status as a role model to his young fans. "I have been dedicated to youth organizations and wish to continue to support them," the statement continued. "I do not want my community and especially young people that look up to me to think that this is the type of thing that I would do."

Reps for Too Short did not respond to MTV News' request for comment at press time.

The Cali star is due in court August 4 and could face a $1,000 fine and up to six months in prison if convicted.

The 2010 box office has been very kind to Leonardo DiCaprio. In February, "Shutter Island" delivered his biggest opening to date, with $41 million in ticket sales, and went on to gross $128 million domestically. This past weekend, "Inception" performed even better, grossing $60.4 million, likely setting itself up to rake in even more dough in coming weeks.

Where does the 35-year-old actor, now clearly at the top of his Hollywood game, go from here? He's got a slew of projects lined up, all in various states of development. Let's take a look at some of his most high-profile potential films and see how Leo's cinematic future might shake out.

"Hoover"
Next up for Leo is the title role in Clint Eastwood's biopic about controversial FBI director — and rumored cross-dresser — J. Edgar Hoover. The script comes from the pen of Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for the Sean Penn-starring "Milk."

"The Wolf of Wall Street"
Based on a tell-all memoir, this project has been around since 2007, but it was given new life earlier this month when Martin Scorsese offered to hand over directorial duties to Ridley Scott. DiCaprio would play a stockbroker who lands in prison for refusing to cooperate in a 1990s securities-fraud case. The only question about production is timing: Leo is set for "Hoover" next and Scott is ramping up to shoot his 3-D "Alien" prequel.

The Mel Gibson Viking Movie
Word about this project dropped in December of last year, and earlier this month, DiCaprio told us he couldn't wait to be a part of Gibson's take on "some of the most barbaric people ever in history." But after Mel's vicious phone conversations with girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva became public, it's hard to imagine Leo wanting anything to do with this movie.

"Travis McGee"
Oliver Stone is circling this detective story, with DiCaprio attached to star. The character is the hero of over 20 novels written by John D. MacDonald, with the first film to be adapted from 1964's "The Deep Blue Good-by," the first book in the series about a "salvage consultant" pulled into various adventures.

"Prisoners"
DiCaprio is attached to star in this thriller as a father who kidnaps and tortures the man who kidnapped his daughter. A director has yet to be announced. File this one under "wait and see."

"The Chancellor Manuscript"
This flick would put Leo in Jason Bourne territory. Based on the novel by "Bourne" mastermind Robert Ludlum, DiCaprio would presumably star as the author of a novel about a government conspiracy theory which actually turns about to be true. "Quantum of Solace" helmer Marc Forster is attached to direct. No word yet on when production might actually begin.

"Brave New World"
We haven't heard anything about this one since last summer, when Ridley Scott and DiCaprio announced plans to bring an adaptation of Aldous Huxley's seminal novel to the big screen. Leo is onboard as a producer with an eye on a starring role.

"Sinatra"
Scorsese is putting this picture together, and word is that DiCaprio is a top candidate to play Ol' Blue Eyes. When we asked him about the possibility earlier this year, he said, "I don't know [if I'll play him]. I have no idea, really. That's really up to [Scorsese] and the people involved with [Sinatra's] estate."

Which project do you most want to see Leo take on next? Tell us in the comments!

Enrique Iglesias Says He'll Water-Ski Nude 'At Some Point'

'I'm waiting for a very, very, very dark night,' the Spain-born pop star jokes to MTV News of honoring World Cup bet.

Ladies everywhere — whether soccer fans or not — should have been celebrating Spain's win in the 2010 World Cup, since the team's victory means that Enrique Iglesias will now have to make good on his promise to water-ski naked. The singer vowed that if his native country took the Cup, he'd hit the water in the buff.

"I was just extremely passionate about the World Cup, and to watch Spain win was just unbelievable," Iglesias told MTV News on Monday (July 19), opening up as well about his latest album, Euphoria.

"What happened is ... I'm from Spain and I was rooting for Spain and they lost their first game against Switzerland, so all my friends would call me up and make fun of me ... and that's where that bet came in."

Cheering on his squad paid off for Iglesias (in a sense), but fans are wondering just when they can expect to see the star au naturel.

"I'm waiting for a very, very, very dark night and ... yep, a bet's a bet," he conceded. "At some point, I will have to do it."

If Enrique does go through with it, he'll probably need to ensure there aren't any police around first. But for now, he sounded less concerned with law enforcement than with what might be lurking on the beaches of Miami.

"Technically, it is indecent exposure, so I guess you can get arrested for it," he said. "There was a bunch of [conditions I required for the bet]: I had to be a little drunk. It had to be late, late at night and the thing about the bet, what's scary is that Miami's full of sharks, so you don't want to fall, middle of the night, naked in the ocean. It's not fun — especially drunk."

Do you want Enrique to keep his promise to water-ski in the buff? Tell us in the comments!

Vanessa Hudgens Says 'Sucker Punch' Would Be 'So Badass' In 3-D

'Having my tomahawk fly towards your face, [it would be] just too cool,' she tells MTV News of Zack Snyder flick.

Vanessa Hudgens' upcoming film roles are definite departures from her squeaky-clean work in "High School Musical" — particularly in the upcoming action-thriller "Sucker Punch," directed by "300" helmer Zack Snyder.

When MTV News recently caught up with the young star, she revealed just how different the role really is. Hint: She's traded singing for slinging bullets.

Although the film will present at Comic-Con this weekend, Hudgens said it is far from completion. "It's probably, definitely not done," she said. "There's so much CGI in it, it's ridiculous."

Regarding the film joining in on the popular 3-D trend, Hudgens was enthusiastic about "Sucker Punch" going that route. "It would be so badass," she said. "It's already really badass, but having it in 3-D ... having my tomahawk fly towards your face, [it would be] just too cool, you know?"

Speaking of badass, Hudgens continued to cite the gun-slinging as her favorite aspect of filming.

"Shooting a .50-cal [machine gun], there's nothing like it," she said with a smile. Hudgens added that she and her female castmates (including Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning) found a new sense of empowerment with their gun-wielding skills. "I think all of us girls loved it so much. We're all strong individuals, and when you give us a gun ... you kind of unleash something."

Hudgens is also excited for fans to see a sneak peek of footage, which will premiere at Comic-Con in San Diego. "I'm going for the first time, and I'm so excited!" she exclaimed. "I want to go dress up in a mask or paint my face so I can walk around in the crowd."

Most of all, Hudgens can't wait to see the first clip from the film, which is slated to premiere Saturday. "I'm really excited [for fans to see it]. There's this beast that's been unleashed with all of this. ... I'm a lot tougher, stronger, badass — I don't want to sound cocky, but it's cool."

Although his "Harry Potter" duties are not quite behind him — "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" parts 1 and 2 open, respectively, in November 2010 and July 2011 — superstar Daniel Radcliffe is already lining up work. His post-Potter plans now include three projects that, like "Potter," are book adaptations, as it was announced on Monday (July 19) that Radcliffe will lead the cast of "The Woman in Black," based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel.

Radcliffe will also return to Broadway for a revival in spring 2011 of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (from Shepherd Mead's 1952 book of the same name) and recently signed on to star in a remake of "All Quiet on the Western Front," due in 2012 and derived from Erich Maria Remarque's beloved novel.

In "The Woman," a thriller to be directed by James Watkins ("Eden Lake"), Radcliffe will play a young lawyer named Arthur Kipps who's dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client's affairs. He works from her creaky old house and, according to the studio's press release, soon discovers the nearby town "is held hostage by the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance."

While Radcliffe's upcoming endeavors have the based-on-a-book aspect in common, his lineup is actually very diverse: The young star seems determined to follow up his "Potter" credits with work that will show him to be a serious actor.

Pete Wentz Wants Black Cards To Make 'Global Music'

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:58 AM PDT

Bassist asserts that new band isn't making reggae music, but he wants to transcend 'cultures and borders.'
By James Montgomery

With each passing week, we're seemingly learning more and more about Pete Wentz's new Black Cards project.

First, the information came in drips and drabs — a snippet or two of a song, a few sentences from Wentz about who wasn't in the band. Then things picked up a bit, when the bass player posted a lengthy message on the Cards' site and then revealed the identity of the band's mysterious female singer to Rolling Stone.

But for all we know, there's still plenty we don't. And Wentz doesn't exactly seem like he's in a hurry to fill in all the Black Card blanks just yet. There is one misconception about the band, however, that he couldn't wait to clear up: Despite what he may have written in that message on the Black Cards' site about how he was influenced by a trip to Jamaica, this definitely isn't a reggae band.

"I think it came off as though it was gonna be a reggae band ... that's not true," he wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. "It's a mashing together of ideas — the first few pieces we put up were more big-band/jazz/dance, [but] I don't know how to describe it. There are a few songs that have more of a reggae swing to the beat. I think I meant that I'm interested in making global music. I like the idea of art transcending cultures and borders ... [but] who knows whether I can."

Of course, Wentz ended that statement by adding that the Cards do have one song — tentatively called "Summer Nights" — that "reminds me of Montego Bay ... but it's not necessarily a reggae song though."

Despite such vague statements, Wentz swears that he's got a plan for the Black Cards, even if it's a pretty loose one. After spending months searching for a "quirky, British girl" to front the band, he heard unknown singer Bebe Rexha — who hails from Long Island — laying down tracks in an adjacent studio, and decided to sign her up on the spot.

"Really, [the band] wasn't even a thought in my head until it all clicked together. I didn't really even want to talk about Black Cards until we had figured it all out," he wrote. "The truth is we're writing/recording about a song every week or two weeks. Now we're just trying to beat other songs we had."

Wentz has got big ideas, for certain, but he's still trying to figure out how — or, really, if — he's going to be able to pull them off. And that applies to the question of whether the Cards will be taking their act on the road anytime soon.

"We have to figure out exactly what is practical. To me, if and when we play shows, I want them to be events," he wrote. "I think this music lends itself to different imagery and exhibition [more] than anything I've been a part of before."

Patrick Stump Clears Up Rumors About Solo Album On Twitter

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 12:23 AM PDT

'I was tempted out of my cave by misinformation,' he says of his recent tweets.
By James Montgomery

Patrick Stump has never really been the most tech-savvy dude — his social networking presence isn't exactly what you would call robust — so, when he took to his Twitter account late Friday (July 16), it was clearly because he had something important to say.

"This is the first tweet I'm typing myself," he wrote on the page, which, up until this point, had been maintained/updated by someone else. "Gonna clear up some misinformation."

At issue were stories about his upcoming solo album, several of which seemed to insinuate that he'd no longer be playing every instrument on the disc (something he's long maintained), but would be joined on the album by former Taking Back Sunday bassist Matt Rubano and drummer Mike Fasano.

"Matt Rubano is playing in my band, he's a genius, but he is not playing on the record," Stump wrote. "Mike Fasano isn't playing on the record either, he's my drum tech, and a damn good one ... I'm still playing everything on the record and it's almost done."

Considering that the Rubano stuff had been circulating since late May, you get a pretty good idea of how often Stump checks in online. But, since he had momentum, he also used his Twitter to address a Washington Post blog post that quoted him as saying his debut disc would feature "outsider folk."

" 'Outsider folk' was a misquote. I said, 'Outsider funk,' but it's not even really that anymore," he wrote. "It's basically an R&B album, but as they say, 'Talking about music is like dancing about architecture ...' You'll have to just hear yourself."

He closed by promising that fans would be hearing his much-discussed solo debut very soon, writing, "Patience will be rewarded. I guarantee no Chinese Democracy."

MTV News sent Stump an e-mail to see if he had anything to add to his, uh, addendums, and, somewhat surprisingly, we got a response — one that hinted, in a very funny way, that fans probably shouldn't expect another outpouring of Tweets like this any time soon.

"The only thing I have to add: I still don't dig Twitter. To paraphrase Lee Marvin, 'I know my career must be doing great 'cause I'm getting quoted incorrectly,' " Stump wrote. "I was tempted out of my cave by misinformation. But you'll never see me tweet what I had for lunch."

'The Walking Dead' Zombies Take Over Atlanta, Then Your TV

'I'd like to do 20 years of zombie TV,' executive producer Frank Darabont says on the set of new AMC series.

ATLANTA — There is carnage on the streets of the ATL. At least there was, when MTV News went down South, to visit the set of "The Walking Dead." There we found a horde of living dead prepared to bring Frank Darabont's live-action adaptation of the hit comic books to life when the series premieres on AMC in October.

We also found Darabont, "Walking Dead" comic creator Robert Kirkman, and many of the creative minds behind the show.

"We have blocks of Atlanta shut down here, and there's a tank behind me, if you can't see it," said Kirkman, who also serves as the series' executive producer and a screenwriter for two of the first six green-lit episodes.

"Just the scale of everything," he marveled. "Everything is being done exactly the way I would've wanted it. And it's better than I could have ever envisioned it. The whole thing is just amazing."

"The Walking Dead" follows a small group of human survivors in a world overrun by flesh-hungry zombies. Unlike zombie stories of the past, however, the comic book series and its small-screen adaptation focus on the effects a zombie apocalypse would have on the people who survive it. Instead of the zombie outbreak, it's the zombie aftermath.

And what an aftermath it is, as the project's team brought the devastation of a zombie plague to the streets of downtown Atlanta — complete with overturned vehicles, scattered debris and yes, even a tank.

"We're going to follow the Robert Kirkman narrative pretty closely, but we're giving ourselves permission to veer off path and find the interesting detours," Darabont told MTV News. "We've got hundreds of zombies. We've got a downed helicopter; it just goes on and on. It's crazy — all on a TV budget."

"The cool thing about it is, Frank Darabont, everything that he's doing is him looking at the book and going, 'I think there's something here that would make it better,' " said Kirkman. "And I'll be damned if he's not right every time."

During our visit to the set, Darabont gave direction to series lead Andrew Lincoln, who plays police officer Rick Grimes, as hundreds of extras in full zombie makeup waited in the wings, ready to crawl, shamble and drag themselves into action. Given the 95-degree temperature on the day of our visit, the performance of the zombie horde was impressive.

"There's a certain look that we're going for," makeup effects supervisor Greg Nicotero told MTV News. "We want real gaunt, real thin features. ... Tall, so that then we can make it look like they're malnourished. So far, we've had some great performers, and they bring the makeup to life."

Darabont said he'd love to make the series a regular part of his career well beyond the first six episodes, much like Kirkman himself has done with the long-running comic book series.

"I'd like to do 20 years of zombie TV," he laughed. "Every day I'm at the monitors, and I'm going, 'This is really, really cool.' "

Much of the show's team will also be attending this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego and will host a "Walking Dead" panel on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Room 6BCF.

Meet 'Inception' Breakout Star Tom Hardy

The Brit actor gets another shot at stardom with a role in Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster.
By Eric Ditzian

In the midst of all the visual complexity and storytelling wizardry in "Inception," the weekend's big box-office winner with a $60.4 million opening, one performance in particular shines through. Tom Hardy plays Eames, a forger on Leonardo DiCaprio's team of fantastical bandits who is capable of impersonating other people within a shared dream state.

From the very first time we meet him in a dusty Kenyan cafe, Eames comes across as an erudite ass-kicker, if such a thing is possible — a guy who can discuss intricate psychological issues at a PhD-level and then turn around and bust a few skulls. Hardy slips into Eames' sweaty skin for an effortless performance in which... well, it just never seems like he's acting.

Before last weekend, American audiences might not have remembered who Hardy is, but they certainly know now after his breakout "Inception" performance. He actually sports an impressive Hollywood résumé, and with the lead role in a rebooted "Mad Max" franchise in the works, Hardy's moment in the spotlight has finally arrived.

The 32-year-old Brit got his first break when he was in drama school and was cast in Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's HBO miniseries, "Band of Brothers." From there, he landed in the urban warfare flick "Black Hawk Down." Hardy was poised to break onto the A-list, landing the role of the central villain in "Star Trek: Nemesis." But the film turned out to be critical failure and box-office dud that effectively ended that sci-fi franchise's big-screen run for seven years.

By that point, after a string of whirlwind successes, Hardy found himself utterly unprepared for the pressures of Hollywood life and falling into addictions to drugs and alcohol. "It was all in, like, 16 months. I thought, 'This is it!' and I wasn't prepared at all for any of the pressure. It manifested in panic and fear and lots and lots of drinking to bolster my courage," he told MTV News late last year. "I ended up in the hospital just after it came out. I broke down physically, spiritually, mentally."

Eventually Hardy got sober and retreated to theater work in the U.K. He'd pop up in films here and there, but in nothing close to the high-profile roles he enjoyed at the start of the decade. His American comeback began at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2009 with "Bronson," a biopic about England's most notorious prisoner. It was a buzzworthy performance, and while it hardly made a ripple at the box office, the film served as notice that Hardy was back.

"It hasn't changed the way I work at all," he explained. "But it's sort of a fishing thing — right place, right time — and offers have started to come in which weren't offered before. There are two sides to that story. I don't know how the industry works, how somebody becomes a hot property or not. But ['Bronson'] was definitely a good business card in that sense."

One of the directors who came calling was Christopher Nolan, who cast Hardy alongside DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Inception." Then in October, word surfaced that Hardy was circling the lead role in "Mad Max," taking over a franchise that launched Mel Gibson's career. Finally, it seems, Hardy is getting his due. It couldn't happen to a more talented and humble person. And this time around, Hardy is approaching his resurrected career with an entirely different attitude.

"If I feel anything is encroaching on my ability to stay stable and have a purpose in my life, then I'll bow out respectfully," he said. "I came very close to losing everything before, and it scarred me. I'm very proud of the mark, but I don't ever want to go there again."

Check out everything we've got on "Inception."

Vampire Weekend 'Look Forward' To Resolving <i>Contra</i> Lawsuit, Label Says

Posted: 18 Jul 2010 10:43 PM PDT

Frontman Ezra Koenig calls album-cover suit 'a little frustrating.'
By James Montgomery

Last week, Ann Kirsten Kennis — the cover star of Vampire Weekend's Contra album — filed suit against the band in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that her signature was forged on photographer Tod Brody's photographic release.

At the time, VW's label, XL Recordings, told MTV News they had "no comment" on Kennis' lawsuit, and the only comment from the band itself was a winking emoticon tweeted by frontman Ezra Koenig.

Since then, things have changed.

First, Entertainment Weekly spoke to Kennis' attorney and Brody, who, somewhat understandably, had differing opinions about the suit.

Alan Neigher, who is representing Kennis, said his client was unaware that a Polaroid of her was being used by the band until her daughter told her, adding that the picture was "taken by her family" in 1983 and Kennis "has no idea how that photograph got into the photographer's hands."

Brody — the photographer — laughed when he heard Neigher's claims, maintaining that not only did he take the photo, but that it "was in my possession the entire time, for 26 years, until it was delivered to Vampire Weekend."

And late Friday, reps for XL sent a statement about the lawsuit to MTV News, saying they did their due diligence when securing the rights to the photo and that they "look forward" to proving that claim in court.

"As is standard practice, Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings licensed the rights to use the photo on the cover of Contra pursuant to a license agreement that contains representations and warranties authorizing this use of the photo," the statement read. "Now that a lawsuit has been filed, we look forward to having the matter resolved in Court. We will be filing our response after we have had an opportunity to review the allegations. Consistent with our practice, we will not be commenting further about the pending litigation at this time."

And finally, during a talk with British mag NME at this past weekend's Latitude festival, Koenig broke his silence, saying he and his bandmates found the entire experience — and the inability to speak openly about it — "a little frustrating"

"I think I can speak for all of us and say this is the first time any of us have ever been sued, so we're still learning how it works," he said "There's so many things we could say about it, but given we have no experience of it, we're just keeping conversations to a journal for now, which is a little frustrating.

"There's nothing we can say about it," he continued. "We're not trying to be mysterious. I imagine in the next few months, there'll be plenty to talk about. Given it's our first time, we just want to do it properly."
