We put the pieces in play; you guys did the heavy lifting.

About a month ago, we made the announcement of a project that left the majority of the power in the hands of you guys, our audience: "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010." Unlike our "Hottest MCs in the Game" throwdown (check back with us in the weeks to come for details), "Breakthrough" is not about established superstars. It's all about MCs we feel have potential to shatter the glass ceiling and elevate to that elite status.

So members of the MTV News hip-hop brain trust selected 20 names based on their buzz right now, with the understanding that no one on the list could have released a solo album on a major label. We put the names out and gave you all a chance to vote on your picks for "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010." More than 200,000 votes were cast, and the polls close Friday at midnight. Now here is the fun part: You get to see the results.

Starting Monday, we'll roll out the top-five vote-getters (in no particular order). One finalist name will be revealed each day. Then on Sunday, July 25, at noon during the "Sucker Free Summit," the winner will be announced. Stay tuned and make sure to give us your thoughts in the comments section.

A tumble onstage didn't slow down Pink one bit. The 30-year-old singer took to Twitter (naturally) after a performance on Friday (July 16) in Germany to announce all was well and she was back to performing.

On Thursday, the singer suffered a mild scare when she was rushed to the hospital after falling from a harness meant to hold her suspended above stage at a concert in Nuremberg, Germany. According to GossipCop.com, the acrobatics enthusiast fell from the harness directly onto a steel barricade; the show ended immediately.

She sent out a tweet Friday saying, "Well, we did it!!! always get right back on the horse that bucked you. thank u gorgeous people of Salem, Germany!!! totally worth it!"

Pink had also tweeted her fans while riding in the ambulance on the way to the hospital Thursday, writing "to all my nurnberg fans...I am embarrassed and very sorry. I'm in ambulance now but I will b fine."

She later hit Twitter again to explain the fall, tweeting: "[I] didn't get clipped in2 harness correctly, drug me off stage, fell in2 barricade." The "So What" singer kept fans updated throughout her hospital visit. "Nothings broken," she reported at one point. "No fluid in the lungs, just seriously sore. I made that barricade my b*tch!!!" Thanx nurnberg :("

Pink, in the midst of her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour, is scheduled to continue through Eastern Europe, making stops in Germany, Russia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Are you surprised Pink went back onstage a day after her fall? Or is it exactly what you expect from the star? Tell us in the comments!

Drake Says 'Fancy' Video Sets Out To 'Make Women Feel Special'

Hip-hop heartthrob Drake is keeping it all about the ladies in the video for his Swizz Beatz-produced single "Fancy." The Young Money MC enlisted Swizzy and T.I. for the Thank Me Later joint's clip, but even with all that hip-hop testosterone on set, Drizzy insisted that his latest clip is for his female fans.

"It's just made to make women feel special," Drizzy told MTV News on the set of the video. "It's a great performance video." Drake teamed up with director Anthony Mandler, whom Drizzy dubs a "phenomenal cat" and who has, so far, helmed all the clips for Thank Me Later.

Mandler, Tip and Swizz all put in work on the "Fancy" video, but Drizzy was also geeked out about an artist who was grinding behind the scenes. Drake entrusted the clip's footwork to renowned choreographer Fatima Robinson and gushed that working with the dance diva was "an honor in itself."

With a rap king and a game-changing producer stuntin' in the video and a visual master and dance legend making magic behind the lens, "Fancy" is stacked with stars and packed with top-shelf talent. Star power aside, Drizzy chalked up the appeal of the upcoming video to a few simple things.

"A lot of nice shoes, a lot of nice faces," Drake smiled. "A lot of fun."

Drake might be gearing up to unleash "Fancy" as a single, but the joint almost didn't make his album. It was originally slated to land on projects by both Mary J. Blige and Swizzy before the Toronto rapper lobbied for the track.

"He was like, 'That's the record I need,' " Swizz told MTV News about Drake's reaction when he first heard "Fancy." Swizzy initially offered to re-create the vibe of the song on another joint: "I said, 'OK, I'll make you that.' " Apparently, Drizzy wasn't having it and insisted on the actual "Fancy" song, not a replacement. "No. That's the record I need," Drake said.

"I'm a producer first," Swizz said. "So he can have the record. I'm still on it, it's still love."

What are you looking forward to seeing in Drake's "Fancy" video? Sound off in the comments below!

"Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" Candidate: Vado

This summer is a lot different than the last for Harlem's Vado. During a Mixtape Daily shoot, our cameras caught up with him as he filmed a viral video for his Boss of All Bosses mixtape with mentor Cam'ron and DJ Drama. You had to walk several floors to the rooftop, where Killa and a circle of a few dozen of their friends were waiting. It was scorching hot and bottles of liquor and water were in heavy rotation.

Last week, though, Vado was still surrounded by bottles and a lot of his guys were there, but there were more chicks and, lo and behold, air conditioning. The caliber of production was on a much larger scale. Cam and Vado were filming the clip for their first single, "Speakin' Tongues," which is the lead cut from their group album, Gunz N' Butta (due August 31).

"It was a good look, because that was my first official video, and it was with the big homie Cam," Vado said.

"I don't know what nobody thought," Cam laughed last month in Atlanta when asked about the song. "It's me. This is what I do for a living. But shout to Vado. It's his record. He got the beat and all that. I was like, 'Nah, we gotta put that out immediately.' "

"The song is about partying, living the Harlem life. Ballin'. You already know," Vado added.

Vado's name being mentioned with the "Hottest Breakthrough" candidates comes off the strength of his MCing, as it should. Put aside all the extras — backstory, swagger, affiliations — the guy can rap. He has lyrics but gets his point across every time with gallons of energy.

And with the Killa Cam co-sign to add to his talent, Vado has become one of the top-tier blue-chippers.

Vado, who's been rapping for the past decade, finally got his shine when Cam — who's from the same neighborhood — introduced him on the mixtape circuit last year through tapes as a member of his new crew the U.N. The duo have kept their buzz bubbling with their Boss of All Bosses mixtapes.

Cam is taking his time before fully unleashing his protégé. Gunz N' Butta is the setup to Vado's solo album, Slime Flu, due before 2010 is done.

Vado and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" — and the winner will be decided by you!

Cast your vote for the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" right here. The top five will be revealed beginning on July 19, and the winner will be announced on the "Sucker Free Summit" July 25.

Lil Wayne Owes $1.1 Million In Unpaid Taxes

IRS filed a tax lien against the incarcerated rapper last month.

We've already found out that Lil Wayne plans to drop an EP before he's released from prison in November, and his Young Money cohorts have said their capo is eager to get right to work the day he's out.

But before he takes care of any of that, he may have to settle some business with the state of Florida. According to The Detroit News, Florida court records indicate that the Internal Revenue Service filed a $1.13 million tax lien against the rapper last month in Dade County Circuit Court.

Apparently, he owes income taxes from 2004, 2005 and 2007, and the lien lists the address of Weezy's One Family Foundation on the document. The 2004 line shows an unpaid balance of $176,561, as well as $97,686 for 2005 and $864,511 for 2007 for the organization.

This is the second time Wayne has had a tax lien filed against him, following one in 2008 when he paid off a tax debt of $977,840.

A spokesperson for Wayne could not be reached for comment at press time.

The good news out of Wayne's camp is the EP, which manager Cortez Bryant recently spoke about.

"I'm putting out a [Wayne EP] called I'm Not a Human Being, and I'll probably drop it on his birthday, September 27," Bryant told Vibe.com. Bryant said the EP won't have the fanfare of a high-profile major-label release and revealed that he's opting instead for a more low-key way to get the music to the masses. "We're not about to roll out no three-month setup. I'm not even putting it out in stores. We just gonna put it out virally and maybe package it up for Christmas. Give 'em a hard copy later for fan appreciation," Bryant said of the release, which is billed as a prelude to Tha Carter IV.

Wayne is approximately halfway through his yearlong sentence and may be released early on good behavior. While the Human Being EP might satisfy fans until the star is back on the scene, Weezy protégé Nicki Minaj — who has kept in touch with Wayne throughout his sentence — said he's probably going to head back into the game with an arsenal of new material.

"I know when he comes out, it's gonna be a problem, 'cause he's one of those people that needs to get out his thoughts," Minaj told MTV News. "So I would imagine he would probably be in the studio for 60 days straight. He'll probably do three albums the day he comes home."

Are you looking forward to new Wayne music when he's released? Let us know in the comments!

Lindsay Lohan Will Do Jail Time, New Lawyer Insists

'Ms. Lohan is suffering from a disease that I am all too familiar with,' says Robert Shapiro, whose son died of a drug overdose.

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that Lindsay Lohan's new attorney, Robert Shapiro, didn't have plans to appeal Lohan's 90-day jail sentence but instead would try to convince Judge Marsha Revel to put Lindsay in a rehab facility and either eliminate or minimize jail time. At the time, the site reported that Shapiro wanted to have Lohan placed in a live-in rehab facility with which he is said to be involved.

That appears to have changed.

"I have agreed to represent Ms. Lohan on the condition that she complies with all the terms of her probation, including a requirement of jail time that was imposed by Judge Marsha Revel," Shapiro told TMZ. "Ms. Lohan is suffering from a disease that I am all too familiar with."

The lawyer, who represented O.J. Simpson in his 1994 murder trial, was talking about his son Brent, who died of an MDMA drug overdose in 2005.

Lohan's original lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, resigned shortly after the actress was sentenced.

Onetime Lohan attorney candidate Stuart V. Goldberg said the actress didn't understand what she was up against.

"My impression of Lindsay is that she's a fragile lost child — a sleeping beauty with her head in the sand," Goldberg said in an interview with People magazine this week. "I found her not fully forewarned of the consequence of her actions. I'm concerned that she's not disciplined or tethered enough to the reality of adult consequences. ... She doesn't seem to have the awareness of what's going to befall her."

Lohan must surrender herself Tuesday to begin serving 90 days in jail, followed by a 90-day inpatient drug rehabilitation program.

Joss Stone Set To Star In James Bond Video Game

There's a new Bond girl on the block.

British singer Joss Stone is the newest Bond girl but don't look for the 23-year-old to heat up the silver screen. Instead, she'll put her smoky pipes to use voicing a character in the upcoming video game "James Bond 007: Blood Stone," from Activision.

A Stone likeness will appear in the game (for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC), and she'll be right there alongside Bond himself, actor Daniel Craig, and Judi Dench (as M), both of whom are reprising their film roles in the game. The singer will also record an original song that she wrote with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics titled "I'll Take It All."

While performing for the gaming world might be novel for Stone, the English soul singer has lent her vocals to several big-screen soundtracks, including songs for 2005's "Fantastic Four" and 2008's "Sex and the City: The Movie," on which she sang "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" with Al Green. Stone has also previously flexed some acting muscle, making her film debut in 2006 in the fantasy adventure film "Eragon," as the witch Angela.

No word yet on whether the video game will help to push the next James Bond film. Earlier this month, production on the movie was halted indefinitely. With Sam Mendes set to direct, production company EON announced in a press release that the project was on hold and wouldn't make a 2010 release date.

Christopher Nolan Never Created A 'Bible' For 'Inception'

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 02:44 AM PDT

'You don't want to go back in and change the rule set,' he says of restricting himself with a guidebook.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Leonardo DiCaprio in "Inception"
Photo: Warner Bros.

There's a moment early in "Inception" (beware mild spoilers) when Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page meet within a Parisian dream world of Page's creation. Leo is a former architect turned professional dream thief, and he's trying to convince Page to ditch her architectural studies and become part of his crew.

In the course of their discussion, DiCaprio raises a metaphor about the act of creation: When you're truly inspired, it's almost as if you're not creating so much as discovering something that already exists. Their dialogue exchange, writer/director Christopher Nolan revealed, is actually ripped directly from his experiences penning the script.

"That's how this felt to me," he explained to MTV News. "It felt like there's a world here that I'm just trying to understand and put together for the audience. ... You feel like it already exists, and you're kind of uncovering it."

Unlike James Cameron in the writing of "Avatar," Nolan declined to create an "Inception" bible to track his various ideas, characters and plot threads. "I kept thinking about doing that," he said. "But what happens is, you come up with a rule set, then you're writing the script, and you need the story to go somewhere else, you don't want to go back in and change the rule set."

Because, as Nolan made clear, he would have had to do a ton of revision to that bible over the course of the writing process. "The backstory, the rules of the world, they evolve as the picture of the whole movie evolves," he said. "You also want to bring actors in and technicians in and really keep the thing fluid until it has to be locked down. So to me, the rules are sort of evolutionary in a film like 'Inception.' You have to be true to them. There's no question about that. You can't cheat with them. But you don't want to sit down and put one to 10, 'OK, these are the rules.'

"Writing is a strange thing, because sometimes it's cart before horse," he added. "Sometimes you know there's a scene that's going to happen, but you don't quite know how you're going to get there. And that's one of the things that I really enjoy about writing."

Katy Perry, Usher Top <i>Billboard</i>'s New Songs Of Summer Chart

Lady Gaga, Drake, Eminem also make top 10 of new list, which ranks biggest summer jams.
By James Montgomery

It would appear, after years spent debating, deliberating, dissecting and disputing, that there is finally a better way to determine just what is the biggest Summer Jam of the year ... and of the past 25 years, too.

That's because Billboard just unveiled its brand-new Songs of the Summer chart, which ranks the Top 10 summer jams "based on actual performance on the Billboard Hot 100, from the June 12, 2010, chart date through the most-recent chart."

Not surprisingly, Katy Perry's "California Gurls" holds the top spot on the chart. After all, the song has been #1 on the Hot 100 for six straight weeks. Usher's "OMG" — which had previously nabbed the top spot on the Hot 100 — is in at #2, followed by B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes," and the Travie McCoy/ Bruno Mars track "Billionaire." Ke$ha's "Your Love Is My Drug" rounds out the Top 5.

Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" — which won MTV's Summer Jam Sweepstakes last month — is at #6, Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart" is at #7, Drake's "Find Your Love" is at #8, Eminem's "Not Afraid" is at #9 and Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me" closes out the Top 10.

The "Songs of the Summer" chart will run until September 9, when Billboard will crown a champion. So it's still plenty early, which means that you probably can expect to see newer Hot 100 entries — like Eminem's hard-charging "Love the Way You Lie," which sits at #2 on the chart after just three weeks — to make a dent on the Summer chart as well. Hot 100 rankings are based on radio play and sales.

Along with the Summer chart, Billboard also unveiled a comprehensive list of the biggest summer songs of the past quarter-century, as determined by impact on the Hot 100 and something called "an inverse point system, with weeks at #1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least." For music obsessives, it's a treat. And for trivia buffs, it finally provides an answer to the question "Who had the biggest summer song in 1988?" (Steve Winwood!) So, really, everyone wins.

'American Idiot' Cast Brings Broadway Punk To 'Good Morning America'

Green Day fans and theater geeks flood Central Park for musical tribute.

NEW YORK — If someone came up to you and called you an American idiot, you wouldn't react too kindly. But for the people in the audience for Friday's "Good Morning America" Summer Concert, the insult became a chant of praise for the cast of Green Day's Broadway musical. Families and punk rockers alike had gathered in Central Park, holding up signs and wearing T-shirts for "American Idiot" and the band behind the Tony-winning show.

The cast opened with the chorus of "American Idiot," accompanied by a mixture of choreographed movement and punkish freestyle head-banging, getting the audience excited. They ended with the salute to punk rock, their fists held in the air as the audience screamed.

The audience waited patiently as host Robin Roberts talked about the cast and show, but some of the actors passed the time by doing flips. Finally, lead actor John Gallagher Jr. stepped onto the stage with a guitar, singing the beginning verse of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," accompanied by violins, and eventually the rest of the cast. Then they transitioned to the faster-paced "Holiday." There were a few wobbly standouts as each actor sang a line, but the rest of the cast and the audience helped out with the mighty "Amen!" the song asks for. They also shouted "Hey!" the way Billie Joe Armstrong does at Green Day shows.

After a break, and more praise from George Stephanopoulis, star Rebecca Jones sang "Letterbomb" (with some swear words taken out) while the other female castmembers danced. After Jones called out, "Wake up, America!" the guys arrived onstage and sang the opening verse of "American Idiot." And though this was the second time this song was played (with the same choreography), the audience didn't seem to mind.

Guitars in hand, the cast ended their set with "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," the song that has ended many a Green Day show.

"It was awesome! They really captured the spirit of Green Day," one fan said after the show. "We saw the actual Broadway show on Wednesday, and even though [this] was shorter, it was just as good!"

What has been your favorite morning talk-show concert this summer? Talk about it in the comments.

Ciara Relives Her Cheerleading-Captain Days On 'When I Was 17'

As we've seen from several episodes of "When I Was 17," some of the biggest stars spent their high school years as awkward social misfits. Not Ciara, though. The "Ride" singer reveals on the latest episode of the series, airing Saturday at 11 a.m., that she was far from a geeky wallflower. The singer known for bringing the heat with her skillful dance moves brought the same undeniable spirit to her high school's cheerleading squad.

"I loved cheerleading — dancing, the game, the excitement, the energy — just everything was fun about it to me," Ciara enthuses.

The ATL princess' powerhouse energy and limber footwork are apparently assets she's been honing for years. But Ciara wasn't just a cheerleader: She was apparently so good at the whole pom-pom waving, high-kicking, cheer-hollering thing that she ended up running the team.

"I was really excited when I was elected captain my senior year," Cici said, giddily reliving the memory. "It was big, like, 'OK, we in the house right now.' "

Although Ciara was at the top of the cheerleading game, she had big dreams and left the sidelines of her high school matches for the nonstop action of superstardom.

"Unfortunately, I couldn't be as involved as I wanted to be because it was a year when my music started to become even more important to me," the star revealed.

She may have given up her pom-poms, but focusing on her music obviously paid off.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Ciara, CC Sabathia and Debi Nova — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Pink Says She Will Perform Friday After Onstage Injury In Germany

'I will be on that stage, even if I have to crawl,' singer tweets after falling into stage barrier Thursday night.

Pink had a bit of a scare during one of her high-flying stunts at a show in Nuremberg, Germany, on Thursday, when she fell into a stage barrier and was immediately rushed to the hospital. According to her Twitter updates from the hospital, however, she didn't break anything and was "just seriously sore."

"Okay. Full steam ahead, people," she tweeted on Friday morning (July 16), apparently determined to perform the same day in Salem, Germany. "No pain, no gain. Or is it no brain, no pain? Either way, I will be on that stage, even if I have to crawl:)"

During the opening bars of her hit "So What," a video posted online shows dancers helping Pink into her harness. "Shall we do it?" she asks the crowd. "I can't hear y'all! Are y'all ready?"

Then, she shouts "No! No!" as the wires pull her off the stage and she falls into the crowd. The music stops, as Pink says from beyond the camera's view, "Oh, f---, that hurt like a mother----er. Sorry."

Although the crowd's cheers die down considerably, some fans can still be heard screaming for the pop star while her crew and dancers work to figure out what is wrong with the singer. Eventually, after some moments pass, Pink is able to get up and make her way back on the stage where she still seems visibly in pain.

At press time, a rep for the singer had not returned MTV News' request for comment regarding her current condition or the status of Friday's show. But Pink's husband, Carey Hart, wrote on Twitter that she has already been released from the hospital and seemed confident that she would be ready for the concert. "She [will] better feel better soon, she has a show tomorrow!" he tweeted. "No, sriously, she is good. Just super banged up. One tough girl."

As for Pink, she is keeping in good spirits about the injury. After Hart wrote about her encounter with the barrier, she made light of the situation, writing, "Nooo! I WON!! RT @hartluck: Fyi@pink out of the hospital+ all good. Just got the shit kicked out of her by the barrier. Steel barrier-1 Pink-0."

Michael Cera Recalls Hanging With 'Jersey Shore' Cast

'We got drunk ... and danced and got in a hot tub and ate pizza,' 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' star says.
By Jocelyn Vena

While he's made a splash in a string of lovable, if nerdy, roles, Michael Cera took on a new part of sorts earlier this year when he allowed the cast of the "Jersey Shore" to give him a very special, personalized makeover. Now, in a new interview with Playboy, the "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" star recounts the time he spent with Snooki, the Situation and rest of the crew.

"Actually, it was one of the most pleasant days I've had in a long time," Cera says in the magazine's August issue. "We got drunk and laughed and danced and got in a hot tub and ate pizza. It was sort of like my 8th birthday party."

While he has no plans to resurrect his "guido" look anytime soon, next up, Cera will star in August 13's "Scott Pilgrim," and he addresses critics who say his onscreen work tends to appeal, a bit too much maybe, those living in nerd-land.

"I would say this movie is both a nerd and a non-nerd's dream come true. For the nerds, there are lots of Nintendo references and sound effects, and the non-nerds will enjoy making fun of all the nerds in the theater exploding with joy, and afterward, will possibly beat them all up."

When talk turned to his "Scott Pilgrim" co-star Anna Kendrick, Cera readily responds to the question of how he stacks up against Kendrick's "Up in the Air" leading man, George Clooney.

" 'Natural transition' is not the phrase I would use. 'Handsome transition' seems to be a better phrase to encapsulate what that lucky girl has experienced," Cera joked.

"Unfortunately, Anna and I got to work together for only one day," he continued. "Though she plays my sister in the movie, one of our biggest scenes together takes place over the phone, and we shot our respective sides of the conversation at completely different times on the shooting schedule. She regrets that we weren't able to spend more time together," he added. "We got close enough for me to feel comfortable in assuming that."

Hours after Pink was rushed to the hospital following an on-stage accident in Nuremberg, Germany, that saw her slip from her harness and land on a metal barricade, Pink was already back on Twitter, assuring fans that she was alright and joking that she "made that barricade [her] bitch!"

And she wasn't the only one who turned to Twitter: Her friends and fans flooded the site as news of the accident broke, sending her well-wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery.

"Pink, feel better, you're more punk rock than all of us!" Katy Perry wrote.

"Pink, thank Jeebus you are alright!" Perez Hilton added after tweeting video of the accident that he deemed "so scary and shocking."

Her fans also sent their love en masse, writing messages like "You are unstoppable!," "Pink's rock hard abs vs. a steel barrier? Steel barrier 0, Pink 1 (million)" and "My prayers go out to you, get well soon gurl!"

Even her husband, Carey Hart, got in on the act, tweeting to her fans that "Pink is out of the hospital and all good. Just got the sh-- kicked out of her by the barrier," adding, in a message to KROQ radio personality Stryker, that Pink "better feel better soon, she has a show tomorrow! No, seriously, she is good. Just super banged-up. One tough girl."

And eventually, Pink herself returned to Twitter, first to tell fans that she would be taking the stage on Friday night in Salem, Germany, "even if I have to crawl," and then sending a message to all her well-wishers.

"A HUMONGOUS thank you to everyone who sent their love and concern," she wrote, adding that "Nikki [one of her dancers also injured in the accident] is also doing fine. I will buy her an ice cream later."

Earlier this week, when the M.I.A.-headlined Hard L.A. concert was abruptly canceled, promoters originally cited "increased security costs," then added that those costs had nothing to do with the death of a 15-year-old girl at a Los Angeles rave a few weeks earlier. Late Thursday, we learned that it was a combination of those extra costs and sluggish ticket sales that ultimately led to the concert's demise — or, more specifically, its grouping with another Hard event.

"We needed to double up on police and fire resources, driving the cost of the show higher," Gary Richards, Hard L.A.'s promoter, wrote in a statement to MTV News. "Sales were not what we expected, so we put both events together to make one large event on August 7th [called] Hard Summer."

Richards added that he's since added Flying Lotus, Switch, Theophilus London and the Gaslamp Killer to the August 7 bill and that the slow ticket sales for Hard L.A. appeared to be an anomaly, as a Hard Events-promoted concert scheduled for Saturday at the El Ray Theater — featuring Die Antwoord, Borgore and Destructo — "is sold out."

He also said that Hard plans to bring most of the artists originally slated for Hard L.A. (M.I.A., Sleigh Bells and Rye Rye) back to Los Angeles for another show this fall.

Last week, the Los Angeles Times' Pop & Hiss blog reported that ticket sales for Hard L.A. were "slow." The concert was scheduled to take place in the 36-acre Los Angeles State Park, which could hold some 25,000 people. When asked by the Times about the slower-than-expected ticket sales, Richards originally replied, "I'd rather not comment on that."

In his statement to MTV News, Richards did not address the date of Hard NYC, which is scheduled for July 24 on New York's Governors Island. In a follow-up e-mail, a publicist for the concert said Hard NYC is going ahead as planned.

A spokesperson for M.I.A.'s label, Interscope Records, did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter.

The-Dream Says He Attempted Suicide When Marriage Unraveled

'I am human, and people fall in and out of love all the time,' singer/songwriter says.

After announcing their split earlier this week, The-Dream wrote an open letter to his fans about his separation from wife Christina Milian. The pair, who were just married in September, reportedly parted ways late last year but didn't formally announce it until long after the birth of their daughter, Violet, in March.

In the statement titled "In My Own Words," posted on his website, he wrote, "First I want to thank God for the trials of life, without them we can't know purpose!"

While the letter is long, The-Dream said he wouldn't address the reasons for the split in the statement. "It's easy to say that it's because of another woman or a new relationship but truthfully, IT'S NOT," said the singer/songwriter, who is rumored to have been unfaithful to Milian.

"I take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for misleading everyone into thinking everything was fine and okay when we knew problems existed for awhile! I wanted to speak up but we decided it wasn't for anyone to know. I would NEVER intentionally hurt a soul and everyone around me knows that!" he continued. "There was so much going on in me and Christina's personal world that I tried to deal with it as delicately as I could and tried to regain my footing. Instead of being direct in order not to cause even more hurt or hurt someone's feelings, I carried the weight in secret!"

The-Dream says in the statement that he even attempted suicide over the breakup of his marriage. "This is not to justify anything, it's true emotion! It's a real thing that involves real people!" he wrote. "I've cried about this for months, after interviews, after prayer and I've tried to take my own life at a point because of the failure that was looming."

He goes on to defend himself, writing, "I am human, and people fall in and out of love all the time. ... This is Life. Nothing's promised or perfect, neither am I. ... I'm sorry for the embarrassment to everyone involved!"

He finishes the by quoting his mother and signing his given name, Terius Nash. "But I was reminded by my MOTHER that I am not 'Superman' and it's okay to lose sometimes," he wrote. "This too shall pass! And everything will be fine!"

'Inception': The Reviews Are In!

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 10:29 PM PDT

A cabal of critics isn't lulled by the blockbuster dreamscape, with one deriding it for having 'no soul, no sex and almost no joy.'

It happened last winter with "Avatar" and it's happening again with "Inception": a hugely hyped, big-budget thrill-ride hits theaters, pretty much everyone loves it, yet there remain a few critics on the sideline defiantly shouting, "But it's really not that good, people!"

To those "Inception" haters, we might ask: Um, what exactly do you expect from a summer blockbuster? Because "Inception" is about as perfect as a summer blockbuster can be. Which is not to say it's a perfect movie. No doubt, Christopher Nolan's cinematic dreamscape has its fair share of flaws. But if you expect a ripping story line, whiz-bang special effects and the sense of being transported to another world, you will not be disappointed. In fact, you will be elated.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, the brains behind a crew of thieves — including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and Tom Hardy — with a peculiar specialty: They possess a machine that allows them to enter another person's dreams and steal a secret. Their quest in "Inception" is to implant a memory, which requires them to create dreams worlds within dream worlds — and not get lost forever on the bewildering shores of their own subconscious.

Will you be a fanatic or hater of "Inception"? There's only one way to find out: Get thyself to the multiplex. And before you do, check out what the critics have to say.

The Hype
"The accomplishments of 'Inception' are mainly technical, which is faint praise only if you insist on expecting something more from commercial entertainment. That audiences do — and should — expect more is partly, I suspect, what has inspired some of the feverish early notices hailing 'Inception' as a masterpiece, just as the desire for a certifiably great superhero movie led to the wild overrating of 'The Dark Knight.' In both cases Mr. Nolan's virtuosity as a conjurer of brilliant scenes and stunning set pieces, along with his ability to invest grandeur and novelty into conventional themes, have fostered the illusion that he is some kind of visionary." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

The Dissenters
"If you approach 'Inception' with lowered expectations it's a pretty good time ... For all the complexity, craftsmanship and color of 'Inception,' it's yet another of [Nolan's] ultra-serious schematic constructions with no soul, no sex and almost no joy, all about some tormented dude struggling with his ill-managed Freudian demons. That same guy sitting next to me cracked that Nolan needs to stop seeing a therapist; there's not nearly enough sublimation in his movies." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

The Complexities
"Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay, lays out the rules of his world deftly. A ton of exposition is needed, yet it never feels like exposition. Things are explained plausibly, and in just enough detail for us to get it — the last thing Nolan wants to do is over-explain himself. The information is parceled out carefully, not all at once, but not in a way that's maddening or cryptic, either. Again, I marvel at how many films with concepts far simpler than this one never make sense at all, or else only make sense because they repeat themselves clumsily." — Eric Snider, Cinematical.com

The Performances
" 'Inception' benefits immensely from a series of low-key and thoroughly credible performances. DiCaprio, in a kind of riff on his 'Shutter Island' performance, embodies both the steel and the putty of Cobb, a man who can do remarkable things and is at the same time deeply vulnerable. Gordon-Levitt, stylish and lean as a dagger, makes a fine and steady cohort, Page is utterly at home in the intellectual depths of her character, and Hardy has a seedy nobility that suggests a John le Carré antihero. In [Cillian] Murphy we have a man who isn't a villain but a decent fellow with reasonable defensiveness, and in [Marion] Cotillard, as you might expect, we have a woman worth losing one's mind for — literally, as it happens." — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian

The Director
"Nolan exemplifies the best kind of filmmaking, unchained from the laws of time, space and even gravity, but never from the most basic rules of narrative. Even at its most tangled and paradoxical, 'Inception' keeps circling back to the motivation that has driven films from 'The Wizard of Oz' to 'E.T.': Cobb, finally, just wants to go home." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Stunts
"Many of the movie's effects and digital manipulations are spectacularly imaginative, especially a sequence of weightless action in a rotating hotel corridor, the unexpected arrival of a huge train in a scene without tracks, and the startling sight of a long boulevard peeling up off the ground and rising to double over on itself." — Kurt Loder, MTV News

The Final Word
"When was the last time you had your mind blown by a movie? Because when 'Inception' ends and the lights come up, you'll be sitting in your seat, staring at the screen, wondering what the hell just happened. Of course, it won't be the first time director Christopher Nolan has shaken us out of the apathy that modern moviegoing induces. 'Inception' blends the blockbuster enormity of his 'Dark Knight' with the indie insights of 'Memento' to create an all-encompassing experience that makes most other summer films seem mediocre." — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

iPhone 4 Press Conference: Apple Offers Free Cases As Antenna Fix

Current owners and anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 before September 30 can apply for cases online starting next week.

After weeks of controversy surrounding the iPhone 4's antenna issues, Apple has responded by offering free cases to current owners and anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 before September 30.

Rumblings of technical issues with the iPhone 4 antenna began on launch day, when users and tech blogs were reporting that, when touching the iPhone's antenna in the lower left part of the phone, service would drop out substantially. It was found that having a case, such as Apple's rubberized Bumper, would prevent direct contact with the antenna and thereby fix the issue. The Bumper sells for $29.99.

Earlier this week, Consumer Reports announced that it couldn't recommend the iPhone 4 until Apple offered a free solution to the antenna problem.

Apple held a press conference Friday (July 16) to discuss the problem. Steve Jobs, the co-founder and CEO of Apple, spoke to a small crowd of media, saying the antenna problems on the iPhone 4 have been blown out of proportion. Jobs mentioned that "less than one half of 1 percent" of those contacting AppleCare were experiencing problems with the iPhone 4 antenna and that the rate of dropped calls is equal to that of the iPhone 3GS.

Jobs continued, saying that "[smart] phones aren't perfect ... every phone has weak spots," and he proceeded to show videos of other smart phones experiencing the same drop in reception when held in a certain way.

But Jobs was quick to note that Apple is still concerned about the small percentage of users who are experiencing problems with their phones. He announced that any current iPhone 4 owner, or anyone who purchases the phone before September 30, 2010, will be able to submit a request online for a free case. Because Apple won't be able to manufacture enough Bumper cases for everyone, the site will allow users to select from a range of third-party cases as well.

Those who receive a free case will then have 30 days to decide whether they want to keep the phone or take it back to the store for a full refund.

Apple will begin taking requests for free cases starting late next week.

Justin Bieber Beats Lady Gaga In YouTube Video Popularity -- For Now ...

Lady Gaga has been on an epic, record-setting tear, packing 'em in at concerts, selling millions of records and recently smashing previous marks for downloads, Facebook fans and total online video views.

But a girl can't have it all, right? After a heated battle, Gaga went down in rare defeat on Thursday, when Justin Bieber surpassed her to set a record for the most-watched music video in YouTube history. At press time, Bieber's "Baby" collabo with Ludacris had logged 245,746,720 views, pushing past Gaga's epic "Bad Romance" clip, which was not far behind with 245,596,709.

Now, given Gaga's rabid fanbase of little monsters, there's no doubt this pitched battle will continue and perhaps see a few more lead changes, but for now, the Biebs has emerged victorious.

Bieber, in the midst of doctor-imposed vocal rest while on tour, reacted to the news with delight, tweeting on Thursday, "what is goin on with the 'Baby' video on YouTube is crazy ... I started on YouTube so the support ... well I just need to say thank u."

Showing he was raised right and is a good sport, he followed that tweet with a flip of his bowl cut to his rival, writing, "someone just showed me and I just need to say that @ladygaga is an incredible artist who have great respect 4. And her vid is incredible ... so it doesn't matter who has more views, what matters is that we have incredible fans that support us ... that I'm sure we are both grateful 4."

Then again, winning feels kinda sweet, so he did do a bit of Twitter victory lap. "So thanks ... like I said, I started on YouTube so ... WOW!! Love u and wish u all the best in each and every one of ur lives. Thanks Beliebers!"

And in case the race got close again, his next post was a link to the video.

Trailing way behind on the list of most-watched music videos on YouTube are: Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." (138.6 million), Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" (131.8 million), Miley Cyrus' "7 Things" (125.2 million), Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" (117 million), Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" (101.7 million), Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" (100.1 million), Vanessa Hudgens' "Say OK" (89.1 million) and Timbaland and OneRepublic's "Apologize" (87.4 million).

Katy Perry has made it known that she wants to be "one of those ... teenage wet dreams," and her "California Gurls" video has certainly set the bar high for the singer, who is set to release her new album, Teenage Dream, next month. So for "Teenage Dream," the album's second single, Perry headed to the beach.

In photos taken from the video shoot for the title track, Perry is seen canoodling with a hot guy in a hotel pool in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California. The guy is rumored to be actor Josh Kloss. In another still, leaked online, a bikini-clad Perry is kneeling in the sand, looking up at a scantily clad man, presumably Kloss.

Perry tweeted about the clip as well, writing, "Cut, copy, print, moving on! That's a wrap for Teenage Dream! So gorgeous, I really can't wait to see what [director] Yoann Lemoine makes of it all!!! In my hometown. I got to cast all my friends in the new music vid for Teenage Dream = amazing insanity."

Previewed at a listening party last month, the radio-friendly title track picks up right where "California Gurls" leaves off. With a strong beat to back her up, Perry sings about a boy who makes her feel like a teenager again.

"I wrote that song in Santa Barbara and it was a very pure moment for me, because that's where I'm from," she told MTV News in early June. "And it was, like, where I started my creative juices. And also it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling because everybody remembers what their teenage dreams were — all the girls that were on your poster walls."
