| Katy Perry And Russell Brand Divorce Details Emerge Posted: 31 Dec 2011 09:16 AM PST Sources say a 'massive fight' led to Brand's divorce filing Friday.
On Friday, Russell Brand filed for divorce from his pop-star wife, Katy Perry, after only a year of marriage. With the new year on the horizon, more details about what led to their split are emerging.
Sources told Us Weekly that the couple always fought, but in the time leading up to the divorce filing, the arguments had gotten more heated, leading to one "massive fight." "She was like, 'F--- you. I'm going to do my own thing.' Russell replied, 'Fine, f--- you too,' " the source explained. See a timeline of Katy Perry and Russell Brand's relationship. Meanwhile, other sources close to the couple told E! News that the twosome had spent "a lot of time apart" as of late and that they have been having a number of "problems." TMZ further reports that those separate vacations were planned so that neither party would be in L.A. when the papers were filed. The couple had been having problems for some time, and after trying to make it work, TMZ sources add that "it just wasn't there" anymore. Brand eventually filed for divorce first due to Perry's strong religious beliefs and background. Other reports suggest that Brand and Perry may have had differing views about how they wanted to live their lives. The Daily Mail reports that recovering drug addict Brand didn't approve of Perry's friends (like fellow pop star Rihanna). He had reportedly asked her to "tone it down." The split may be surprising for some given that in the past few weeks, the former couple had gushed about one another in various interviews. When Brand stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," he steadfastly denied that he and Perry had plans to divorce. "There are always rumors, aren't there? In the end, you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult, because a lot of the nude-women websites I quite enjoy," he joked. "I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar," he added. "Yeah. I am really happily married. I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge." In fact, when MTV News spoke to Perry at rehearsals for her "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig earlier this month, she noted that she was getting lots of advice from her soon-to-be ex-husband. "My husband, of course, every day I call him and I'm like, 'This happened,' and he's like, 'I know what that means, and here's the next play-by-play for tomorrow,' so he's gotten me really prepared for this week, thankfully." Whatever happens next for these two in 2012, the comedian noted in a statement that he hoped to remain friends with Perry. "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends." Perry has remained mum since the news broke. The couple kicked off their love affair at the 2009 VMAs when Brand was hosting and Perry was on hand as one of the night's performers. They later got engaged in India during a New Year's vacation months later. The pair married in a lavish affair in India in 2010. Can you hear that? It's the final hours of 2011 winding down, getting ready for a bright and shiny 2012. And what better way to welcome the new year than with another round of celebrity New Year's resolutions? MTV News recently sought out a few of our favorite movers and shakers, including Mac Miller, Florence Welch and the boys of Blink-182, to see what they're resolving to achieve next year. "I make resolutions every five minutes and then I never stick to them," Welch admitted. "My New Year's resolution is to be more patient and observant," said 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC nominee Roscoe Dash. "I feel like if you're patient, you're going to be more observant anyway because you've got nothing but time on your hands." "[I resolve] to have more fun, gain some weight and I want to make a difference in the world. I'm shaving my head next year for charity," 2011 VMA House Artist Jessie J revealed. "I just want to bring more good [to the world]." Fellow Hottest Breakthrough MC nominee French Montana vowed to keep on keepin' on. "Definitely not to change," he said of his resolution. "Everything I've been doing has been working so far, so definitely not to change." "My New Year's resolution is to be healthier in every aspect of my life," Mac Miller said with a smile. We're impressed by all the warm and fuzzy do-good-esque commitments, but Tom Delonge of Blink 182 gets special commendation for his specificity and honesty. "I want to get another tattoo," Delonge announced. "But I need to exercise before I get it because I want to be able to show it off and look really awesome. It's mostly on my genital area," he joked. "No, no, I want to do a back piece." "Travis, do you have a New Year's resolution?" Blink 182 frontman Mark Hoppus asked his bandmate Travis Barker. "I'm down with Tom's," Barker said, prompting Hoppus to also throw his support behind Delonge. "Our New Year's resolution is for Tom to get a back piece," he said. Before making those resolutions a reality, many celebrities will be out and about on New Year's Eve looking to break loose at a number of big New Year's parties. And MTV will also be getting in on the fun during "NYE in NYC 2012," which will feature Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller and more. As the last few hours of this glorious, Adele-ified year disappear, MTV News is turning its attention to the next 12 months, which promise to be full of big-time blockbuster films ("Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Hunger Games") and even bigger-time celebrity events (Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby, Britney's betrothal, Robert Pattinson doing something) — oh yeah, and there's also going to be a presidential election and the London Olympics and, potentially, the end of the world as we know it. So, basically, 2012 is totally going to smoke 2011.
But with so much to look forward to, what will be the event of the year? Well, we decided to take to the streets of New York's Times Square, where the big shiny ball will drop at the stroke of midnight, to find out what's topping your New Year's wish list. "I'm most looking forward to hopefully seeing a Nicki Minaj tour," Adya Goswami said. Alison Grant added, "My favorite is Lil Wayne, so I hope he puts something out again." Of course, while we got plenty of folks clamoring for new music, we heard from even more who couldn't wait to check out the year's biggest movies — and from the sound of things, 2012 might very well be the year of the bat. Or the vampire. "The new Batman movie coming out should be an awesome movie," Nick Stuart said. Haley Race shared, "I'm really excited for the next 'Twilight' movie. I'm really a big fan. I've read the books like 40 times, each of them!" And while "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" seem like sure bets, there are some New Year's wishes that may not come true in 2012. After all, you can't get everything you want. " 'How to Make it in America': If that show gets put back on the air, that would be great," Steve Borrebach said. Fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand were sad to hear Friday that the Gammy-nominated pop star and her actor/comedian husband were divorcing after just 14 months of marriage. Theirs was a whirlwind romance: They were engaged less than four months after they started dating, were married 10 months later in an elaborate ceremony in India, and now, after months of endless baby and breakup rumors, are parting ways.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Brand said in a statement. "I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends." Like so many Hollywood couples before them, their flame burned hot and fast. Here's a look back at the many milestone moments in Perry and Brand's relationship. September 7, 2008: Brand met Perry when he was hosting the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. "Get Him to the Greek" director Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to snag some fun celebrity cameos for the film, in which the British comedian stars. Stoller lined up Christina Aguilera, Pink and Perry, who had immediate chemistry with Brand. Later, following Perry's performance of "I Kissed a Girl" at the VMAs, Brand joked, "I was so inspired by Katy Perry's song's message that I'm currently going through nine ChapSticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized." There was only one problem: Perry wasn't single — she was still dating Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy. September 13, 2009: A year later, at the 2009 VMAs, however, was a very different story. Perry and McCoy had parted ways, and longtime ladies' man Brand, who was back for his second time as host, was single as well when both returned to the VMA stage. They flirted their way through rehearsals for the show, and rumors that they were an item began soon thereafter. April 7, 2011: During a co-hosting stint on "Live With Regis and Kelly," Brand says he and Perry are as happy as can be despite ongoing rumors to the contrary, but admits that the constant attention from the paparazzi does put stress on their relationship. Katy Perry was chosen as MTV's 2011 Artist of the Year. November 11, 2011: Appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to tout the end of her successful California Dreams Tour, Perry told DeGeneres she wanted kids with Russell. "I would love to have children. I think that's one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, 'Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,' " Perry said. "But I'm not sure it's yet. We'll see, you know?" During the sit-down, she admitted that she and Brand worked hard to see each other while she was on tour but that it was often a challenge. "Two weeks, that's the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun." Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge." December 25, 2011: Katy was spotted splashing around in the ocean in Hawaii without Russell and not wearing her wedding ring. Just days later, Brand's ring finger was bare when photographers caught him out walking in London. December 30, 2011: With the new year looming, Brand filed for divorce from Perry in Los Angeles Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences."
