On Sunday night (January 15), George Clooney and "The Artist" continued their awards-season domination while Ricky Gervais giddily piled on the humiliation as the 69th annual Golden Globes went down in Hollywood.

The returning host kept his most pointed barbs confined to the monologue, while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the love a bit more evenly than some predicted, with Globes for stars like Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. Expected winners also took home statues, with Clooney nabbing Best Actor and "The Artist" winning Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical; the actor and film, like Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer and Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer have been cleaning up this month.

"Cheers. So, where was I?" Gervais began, in an appropriately devilish red suit.

The awards show itself was the comedian's first major target ("the Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton"), followed by the Oscars ("when the man who said 'yes' to 'Norbit,' says 'no' to you, you know you're in trouble"), the HFPA, Jodie Foster (Elton John looked unimpressed), Kim Kardashian ("I've sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches than [her marriage]"), Justin Bieber ("the only way that he could have impregnated a girl is if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters") and more.

Gervais introduced the first presenter of the night, Johnny Depp, with a plug for his own forthcoming HBO series, "Life's Too Short," which in one episode's fit of "meta" casting features Depp as himself grilling Gervais about last year's Golden Globes. Depp sipped from Gervais' glass of beer before the comedian asked him if he'd seen "The Tourist" yet. "No," Depp responded, as he stifled a laugh. (Depp went on to introduce a short clip about Martin Scorsese's 3-D picture "Hugo," which was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama.)

Gerard Butler and Mila Kunis presented the award for Best Supporting Actor to Plummer for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in "Beginners."

"What a wonderful welcome back to the home of King Kong, Rin-Tin Tin and all our youthful fantasies," the 82-year-old screen legend said. "I must praise my distinguished competitors for whom I have the greatest admiration and to whom I apologize most profusely. And I want to salute my partner, Ewan, that wily Scot; Ewan 'My Heart's in the Highlands' McGregor." His last bit of thanks was reserved for his wife of 43 years, Elaine. "[Her] bravery and beauty haunts me still."

"Two and a Half Men" star Ashton Kutcher and supermodel Elle Macpherson were up next to present Best Actress in a TV Series - Comedy or Musical. The Globe went to Laura Dern for "Enlightened," marking her third win overall at the event.

Teleprompter problems plagued Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore as they introduced this year's Miss Golden Globe (Rainey Qualley, daughter of actress Andy MacDowell). The pair went on to present the award for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie to "Downton Abbey." Fans of the hit PBS series include Patton Oswalt, who once tweeted that the show is "Star Trek for tea drinkers!"

"We're already five minutes over," Gervais chided when he returned to the stage, digging into overly long acceptance speeches. "You don't need to thank everyone you've ever met ... just do the main two, your agent and God." The self-described atheist added that both had an "equal amount" of input into his career. From there, he brought up the scene in "Bridesmaids" where Melissa McCarthy's character moves her bowels in a sink. "Amazingly, that's still less demeaning than what most of you have done to make it in show business," he told the audience.

McCarthy and Paula Patton gave the Best Actor in a Comedy Series Globe to Kelsey Grammer for "Boss" (prompting viewers like @mindykaling to reminisce about the actor's semi-legendary fall from a stage) and Best TV Series - Drama to "Homeland."

Jimmy Fallon broke out his Mick Jagger moves before presenting the award for Best Song and Best Score with Maroon Five's Adam Levine to "The Artist" composer Ludovic Bource. Madonna and Elton John had earlier engaged in some red-carpet cattiness about the Best Original Song - Motion Picture category, in which they were both nominated. Ultimately, it was Madge who triumphed: Her win for the song she wrote for directorial effort "W.E." followed a previous Golden Globe for her starring performance in 1996's "Evita."

Seth Rogen and a typically stunning Kate Beckinsale soon followed. "Hello, I'm Seth Rogen, and I am currently trying to conceal a massive erection," he said, which kept Beckinsale laughing as they introduced the nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy.

Michelle Williams won for "My Week with Marilyn," a film Rogen dryly called a "hysterical comedy" (the movie is arguably more of a drama, despite its categorization). "I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person that I most want to thank is my daughter," Williams said, speaking about Matilda Rose, her child with late actor Heath Ledger. She also thanked the HFPA "for putting in my hands this same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over 50 years ago. Thank you, I'm honored."

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Parabo presented Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie to Peter Dinklage for "Game of Thrones."

"I was talking to my mother in Jersey before I came out and she said, 'Have fun but, 'Have you seen Mildred Pierce? Guy Pearce is so good, he's going to win!'. ... I just love our moms, 'cause they keep us humble," Dinklage said. He then drew attention to the story of Martin Henderson, a dwarf who suffered a serious injury reportedly inspired by a cruel "dwarf-tossing" competition.

Ricky's punch line when he introduced Madonna was little more than a well-placed clearing of his throat, which followed this: "Our next presenter is the Queen of Pop — not you, Elton, sit down. She's all woman. I'll give you some clues: She's always vogue. She's a material girl. And she's just like a virgin ... ahem." The Queen of Pop was ready with a quick retort: "If I'm still just like a virgin, then why don't you come over here and do something about it?" she challenged. "I haven't kissed a girl in a few years — on TV."

"Seriously nuts... Seriously," Spencer said after Bradley Cooper introduced Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. "The Help" star has been stacking up awards this month for her part in the breakout hit. "With regard to domestics in this country, now and then I think Dr. King said it best: 'All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.' " She then sped through her thank-you's in a comedic nod to the show's habit of playing off winners mid-speech. "Table 10, thank you again!" she concluded.

Reese Witherspoon introduced "The Descendants," which she noted was directed by "my friend, Alexander Payne," with whom she made the classic dark comedy, "Election." Later in the show, Robert Downey Jr. introduced the film "The Artist."

Morgan Freeman is only the second African American actor to receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award; he accepted it 30 years after Sidney Poitier was similarly honored in 1982. The 84-year-old Poitier received a standing ovation when he came out to introduce Freeman. "In my humble opinion, sir, you are indeed a prince in the profession you have chosen. We thank you, Mr. Freeman, for raising the level of excellence yet another notch. Welcome aboard, Morgan Freeman," he said. The 74-year-old Freeman was honored for a career that includes iconic roles in movies like "Driving Miss Daisy," "Glory," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Million Dollar Baby."

Angelina Jolie gave Martin Scorsese Best Director - Motion Picture for "Hugo." "Sit down, sit down, everybody!" he commanded. He thanked the HFPA for all of the work they do to help ensure the preservation and restoration of cinema, which tied directly into "Hugo."

Gervais joked about Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas' accents when he introduced them, prompting a long, non-English response from Banderas. "Ricky, I don't understand [Banderas] either," Hayek teased. The pair gave the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical to "Modern Family," with Columbian castmember Sofia Vergara accepting with a short speech in Spanish that one of the show's producers comically mistranslated.

Michelle Pfeiffer introduced Steven Spielberg's "War Horse." Presenters Jessica Biel and Mark Wahlberg were up next. Wahlberg complimented Biel's pronunciation of Jean Dujardin (Best Actor winner for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical), before Queen Latifah introduced "The Help." Then Gervais was back onstage. "Nearly there, nearly there," he said at the two-and-a-half-hour mark.

"Our next presenter is British, like me. But unlike me, he's won an Oscar, for his brilliant portrayal in 'The King's Speech.' He's also swooned over by women," Gervais went on, also noting Colin Firth's high profile with critics. "What you don't know about him is he's very racist. I've also seen him punch a little blind kitten. Please welcome the evil Colin Firth!"

Firth pretended to kick Gervais when he came out, but the actor was smiling. "As I was on my way in, I noticed some very angry religious people outside threatening us all with brimstone ... for our sins. ... What they don't realize is we have Ricky."

"When Ricky Gervais' deal fell through and they came to me to play Margret Thatcher," Meryl Streep began as she accepted Best Actress, Motion Picture for "The Iron Lady." Clooney helped pass her glasses to the stage so she could better read her speech, but she stayed off her notes and offered heartfelt appreciation for all of the women nominated in the category alongside her. "I just want to thank my agent and God — Harvey Weinstein, the punisher," she added to much laughter and applause.

Jane Fonda presented Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical to "The Artist," as even the dog from the film took the stage.

Natalie Portman, Best Actress for "Black Swan" at last year's Globe's, was the next presenter. Gervais pointed out that she's nominated for nothing this year, seeing how she took time off to have her baby. "She's learned that valuable lesson that all of you knew: never put family first!" Portman gave the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Motion Picture - Drama to Clooney for "The Descendants." The star first gave a shout-out to Brad Pitt, followed by a "thank you" to Michael Fassbender "for taking over the frontal nudity responsibility that I had," before making an off-color joke that involved golf. Alexander Payne accepted the Best Picture, Drama award from Harrison Ford shortly afterward.

George Clooney Bests Brad Pitt For Best Actor Golden Globe

In a race that was considered to be a battle of the A-listers, George Clooney took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for "The Descendants."

After an evening of joking about his celebrity best bud, George Clooney opened his acceptance speech by letting Brad Pitt know exactly what he thought of him.

"I wanted to say it's nice to see Brad, and it's nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he's doing in two films this year," Clooney said. "But what wonderful work he does in the rest of the world to the rest of the people."

Pitt, who was nominated for "Moneyball," and Clooney emerged as the front-runners in the category soon after the nominees were announced last month, and their well-documented friendship came to dominate the conversation around the race.

Earlier in the evening, Clooney borrowed the cane Pitt used throughout the evening, seemingly to poke fun at his friend.

Clooney also acknowledged one of the actors he got to meet for the awards show, fellow nominee Michael Fassbender, and he took the opportunity to crack a joke about Fassbender's revealing role in "Shame."

"I'd like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal-nudity responsibility that I had," Clooney said. "Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man. Do it."

Toward the end of his acceptance speech, Clooney got a little more serious and thanked his co-stars and writer/director Alexander Payne. "Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend," he said.

Madonna's 'Masterpiece' Wins The Golden Globe

Madonna has a huge year ahead of her, and she's already getting some shine. At the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15), the pop star-turned-film director nabbed the Best Original Song prize for "Masterpiece," which was featured in "W.E.," which she wrote and directed.

Taking the stage in her glittering Reem Acra-designed dress, Madge thanked the many collaborators who helped her write the song featured in her first feature film, which opens in wide release next month.

"This is a surprise," she told the room, clutching her prize. "Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this acknowledgement. I need to thank my co-writers, Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, my co-producer William Orbit, who's not here, whom I adore."

As her speech went on, she opened up a bit about the creation of the award-winning track, ignoring her exit music altogether.

"I would also like to thank my manager, Guy Oseary, who I spend most of my time beating up on," she said. "But seriously, he harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song. And I said, 'Please, Guy, I'm trying to focus on being a director and I want people to pay attention to the film and I don't have time.' So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, 'Masterpiece,' so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating."

As her speech wrapped up, she thanked her leading lady in the film, Andrea Riseborough, and producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she called the Punisher.

This is hardly Madonna's first Golden Globe. She previously won Best Actress in Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for playing Eva Peron in "Evita." "Masterpiece" is expected to appear on Madonna's forthcoming new record, M.D.N.A.

No tissues were necessary for the cast and crew of weepy drama "The Descendants." The Alexander Payne-written and -directed film took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama, beating out star George Clooney's other film "The Ides of March," along with "The Help," "Hugo," "Moneyball" and "War Horse."

"We had an extraordinary ensemble cast of young and older actors, veterans and newcomers, but our quarterback was George Clooney," said producer Jim Burke during his acceptance speech. "Besides giving a career-best performance, in my mind, he was a generous actor who helped everyone do his best. So thank you very much, George. And if this movie becomes a timeless movie, which I feel like it will be to me, I feel like it's because of our filmmaker and friend, Alexander Payne."

"The Descendants" received five noms from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including Best Performance by an Actress (Shailene Woodley), Best Director (Alexander Payne), Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) and Best Performance by an Actor, which Clooney won. Clooney also paid tribute to Payne in his acceptance speech, saying, "Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend."

The flick, about a widowed land baron (Clooney) who's forced to reconnect with his young daughters, has racked up plenty of awards-season buzz (and was among MTV's top 10 films of 2011). The film earned seven nominations and won Best Actor for Clooney at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on January 12.

The nods at tonight's Golden Globes could be a harbinger for things to come, as the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 24.

'Revenge' Star 'Deeply In Love' With Robert Pattinson

Madeleine Stowe says she may consider altering role to make it more age-appropriate for 'Twilight' star.

Robert Pattinson is so beloved by "Unbound Captives" director and writer Madeleine Stowe that she may consider altering a character in the film's script so that the "Twilight Saga" star can take the role.

MTV News caught up with Stowe on the Golden Globes red carpet and asked her whether there is any chance of RPattz being in the upcoming film. After all, when we last talked to Pattinson, he suggested that he might now be too old for the role.

"The character was conceptualized as an 18-year-old," Stowe acknowledged. When asked if she would be willing to age up the role so he could still take the part, she said with a laugh, "We might. We might just do that. We'll see how it all falls."

It wasn't just the "Twilight" phenomenon that is causing Stowe to be willing to jump through hoops for Pattinson. She explained that she met him before he joined the first "Twilight" film and "fell deeply in love with him" then.

Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are also currently attached to the project. In fact, Jackman recently told MTV News that it's "one of the best scripts I've read in a long time."

With Pattinson's commitment to "Cosmopolis" over with, he seemingly has an open slate ahead of him. Stowe said that Pattinson's decision to come onboard "Unbound Captives" is strictly in his camp.

"It's going to be sort of up to Robert. We're looking at 2013 [for a release date] right now," Stowe said.

Fox's song-and-dance series "Glee" is no stranger to a star-studded cameo or two, with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos and Kristin Chenoweth all walking the halls of McKinley High during the past two and a half seasons. And as the show returns from a month-long hiatus, Gleeks aren't the only ones anticipating a few more famous faces. As star Chris Colfer told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet, there's plenty to look forward to when New Directions warble again January 17.

"Well, the Michael Jackson episode ...," Colfer answered when asked about his most-anticipated upcoming episodes. "We have a Spanish episode coming up with Ricky Martin. We have a Valentine's Day episode coming up, so that's going to be fun."

Martin is slated to play "the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio," according to TVLine. The actor/singer recently tweeted a joyful picture from his first day on set.

As to how the King of Pop's prolific songbook will manifest itself in the January 31 tribute episode, Colfer explained, "Well, I sing part of 'Black [or] White.' I'm the 'White' in 'Black [or] White,' and I sing 'Ben,' that famous song he wrote for the rat."

The rodent in question is the pet of a young boy named Danny in the 1972 film "Ben." Jackson sang a version of the theme song that appeared in the movie's closing credits and was later included on his 1972 album also named Ben. The track "Black or White" was the first single off of Jackson's 1991 album Dangerous.

Katy Perry is a big Madonna fan, and if you didn't know that, you just needed to check her Twitter account during Sunday night's Golden Globes.

"Madge looks goooooood. I'd tap that," tweeted the pop star during the show, just as Madonna took the stage to accept her Globe for Best Original Song.

Madonna seemed to be the center of attention for several star tweeters. "Kinda digging Madonna bringing back the one glove ... w/ lots of bling of course!" LeAnn Rimes wrote.

"Madonna ... seems to have picked up ... Siri's speech cadence," joked Dixie Chick Natalie Maines.

She wasn't the only star who noted Madonna's speaking voice. Perez Hilton commented, "It's so nice that Madonna is embracing her American accent again!"

The night's parade of British winners coupled with British host Ricky Gervais made model/actress Brooklyn Decker take notice. "The Golden Globes are making me wish I had an English accent," she tweeted.

Katy Perry started off the night slowly but gained Twitter momentum as the show progressed. She was especially happy when Octavia Spencer won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. "YES girl! So deserved!!!" she wrote.

Maroon 5 frontman and "Voice" judge Adam Levine was getting excited about his spot as a presenter during the show. "About to attend the Golden Globes for the first time. I'm nominated for best actor EVER."

And one superstar celebrity tweeter was watching the Golden Globes, even though his mind was clearly elsewhere ... like on who won the New York Giants/ Green Bay Packers playoff game. "#GoldenGlobes check. Who won the game?" he typed. (The answer, Ashton Kutcher, is the Giants by a score of 37-20.)

Peter Dinklage Shouts Out Dwarf-Tossing Victim In Golden Globes Speech

Aspiring actor Martin Henderson was partially paralyzed after drunk stranger picked him up and threw him in U.K.

Peter Dinklage might have started off his Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night (January 15) with a charming anecdote about his mother telling him Guy Pearce was going to beat him for the best supporting TV actor award, but he ended it on a serious note. The "Game of Thrones" star gave a shout-out to fellow dwarf Martin Henderson but, rather then elaborating, he just said "Google him."

Within minutes, Henderson's name was a trending topic on Twitter. The aspiring actor was partially paralyzed on his birthday after a drunk stranger picked him up and threw him while he was having a cigarette outside a pub in the U.K. Henderson blames the English rugby team players who recently attended a dwarf-tossing contest during the rugby World Cup in New Zealand for inspiring the attack.

The Daily Mail reports that he now faces life in a wheelchair after the incident. Henderson was recovering from a 2010 back injury but has said that this injury has set him back in his recuperation. He went on to tell The Daily Mail that he believes this will affect his acting career.

"Every time I stand up I don't know if I'm going to fall over. I will have to use a wheelchair and I won't get any acting jobs," said Henderson, who has appeared in U.K. TV series "10th Kingdom" and "Bigger Breakfast."

British authorities are currently looking for the man who assaulted Henderson. The incident occurred on October 7, but Henderson's condition has reportedly worsened as the months have passed. He said that his legs became numb following the attack and that he now keeps falling over, even resulting in a recent fractured arm.

"I guess I was an easy target and the only reason I was picked on was because I am small," Henderson said in the interview. "People's attitudes to me when I go out can be pretty cruel. Most are OK but you get the odd idiot who will make fun and start laughing at me. You just have to ignore it, but this is the first time I have been picked up and thrown about."

Both Dinklage and Henderson suffer from achondroplasia, which causes dwarfirsm. Dinklage was likely trying to raise awareness for a cause that's close to his heart with the shout-out.

Madonna Offers Ricky Gervais A Kiss At Golden Globes

'I haven't kissed a girl in a few years — on TV,' Madge teases the Globes host.

Shortly after winning the Golden Globe for her "W.E." soundtrack original song, "Masterpiece," Madonna returned to the stage during Sunday's (January 15) broadcast and gave host Ricky Gervais a taste of his own medicine.

"OK, our next presenter is the Queen of Pop. Not you, Elton [John], sit down," Gervais joked. "She's all woman. I'll give you some clues: She's always vogue. She's a material girl. And she's just like a virgin," he said with a sarcastic cough. "Please welcome Madonna."

While Gervais got laughs for his introduction, Madge was ready with some good-natured ribbing for the British comedian.

"If I'm still just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it?" she teased. "I haven't kissed a girl in a few years — on TV. Hmm, OK. Moving right along." Behind Madonna, Gervais could be seen running away, which drew more laughs from the room.

The singer/director then went back to the script as she presented Best Foreign Language Film. "I grew up watching movies like most people in this room," she said. "The movies that allowed my imagination to run wild, that made me believe that I can dream and think outside the box were foreign films made by the likes of [directors] Fellini, Visconti, Truffaut, Godard, just to name a few. So there's nothing foreign to me about a foreign film. I am honored and excited to present the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film." (The winner was "A Separation" from Iran.)

The Queen of Pop's (most likely unintentional) reference to a certain princess of pop didn't go unnoticed. Moments after Madonna joked about how long it's been since she "kissed a girl," the "I Kissed a Girl" singer herself, Katy Perry, tweeted, "Madge looks goooooood. I'd tap that. #goldenglobes."

Michelle Williams has come a long way since her "Dawson's Creek" days. On Sunday night (January 15), the pixie-haired actress took the stage to accept her prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for her chameleon-like turn as silver-screen icon Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn."

"I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl [Matilda Ledger], whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and in my life. I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job every day with a hug and kiss," she gushed in her Jason Wu gown. "I couldn't have done it otherwise. You kept me so excited to come home at night and for suffering through six months of bedtime stories where the princesses were read out loud in a Marilyn Monroe-sounding voice.

"I could go on and on," she continued, thanking everyone from producer Harvey Weinstein to her longtime pal and former "Dawson's" co-star Busy Phillips, adding, "I wish I could go on and on; there's so many people to thank. Thank you to Hollywood Foreign Press Association for putting in my hands the same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over fifty years ago. I'm honored."

In 1960, Monroe took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her iconic role in "Some Like It Hot." Williams has been nominated twice before, in 2005 for her work in "Brokeback Mountain" and again in 2010 for her role in "Blue Valentine." This is her first win.

Ricky Gervais Targets Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber In Golden Globes Monologue

'I've sat through longer James Caeron speeches,' comedian quips of Kardashian's brief marriage.

Ricky Gervais did exactly what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired him to do with his opening monologue at Sunday night's (January 15) Golden Globes. He left the audience having to choose between laughing and cringing.

Many of Hollywood's biggest stars left the opener unscathed, a bit of a change from last year's performance. Gervais still lived up to his reputation, however, and didn't shy away from his signature brutal comedy style.

Gervais opened his monologue with an appropriate question, considering how last year's awards went. "Where was I?" he asked. "Nervous? Don't be."

Despite all the talk of Gervais' sharp wit before the show, he aimed the majority of his opening jokes at both the Globes themselves and NBC, the network airing the awards. Right off the bat, he joked, "Tonight, you get Britain's biggest comedian, hosting the world's second-biggest award show on America's third-biggest network. Sorry, fourth."

That isn't to say that the celebrities were off the hook during the monologue. Gervais paid particular attention to Kim Kardashian, cracking two jokes at the recent divorcée's expense. "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton," Gervais said. "A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought."

Gervais also took the opportunity to address the controversy surrounding would-be Oscar host Eddie Murphy. "When the man who said yes to 'Norbit' says no to you, you know you're in trouble," Gervais said.

One joke about Kardashian wasn't enough for Gervais. He circled back around later in the monologue to poke fun at the length of her recent marriage. "Arnold and Maria. J. Lo and Marc Anthony," said Gervais, listing recent celebrity divorces. "Ashton and Demi, Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will ever remember. He wasn't around long. Seventy-two days — a marriage that lasted 72 days. I've sat through longer James Cameron speeches."

Unfortunately for the Beliebers watching the Globes, their boy Justin didn't stay out of Gervais' crosshairs. "Justin Bieber nearly had to take a paternity test. What a waste of a test that would have been!" he joked. "No, he's not the father. The only way that he could have impregnated a girl was if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters. Open wide."

Gervais' third round of hosting came to many as a surprise after both he and the HFPA expressed uncertainty about the British funnyman's return. He joked that the organization warned him that if he offended anyone, they would invite him back to host again.

'Homeland' Wins Golden Globe For Best TV Drama

New Showtime series beat out fan favorites 'Game of Thrones,' 'Boardwalk Empire.'

There was a new collection of faces in the nominee pool for best dramatic TV series at the 69th annual Golden Globes. With the exception of "Boardwalk Empire," which won the Globe in this category last year, all of the contenders were newcomers. There were the dragons and other medieval intrigue of "Game of Thrones" and the ghosts of "American Horror Story," but Showtime's thriller "Homeland" ended up being the show that took home the award.

Creators Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon took to the stage to thank virtually everyone involved in the making of "Homeland." They both credited everyone from the show's stars, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, to the writing and directing crew for making this one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the season.

"I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be standing here on behalf of all the talented people that helped to make this show," Gansa said during his acceptance speech.

Gordon added, "I want to thank everyone who watches and enjoys this show because it makes this very special for us to do."

The new Showtime series follows a CIA agent (Danes) who comes to believe that a Marine (Lewis) who had been held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war has actually been turned by the enemy and now threatens the United States. Everyone else, however, considers the Marine to be a war hero. The CIA agent must turn to a fellow operative to investigate the Marine and prevent another attack on American soil. The series is based on the Israeli TV show "Hatufim."

"Homeland" beat out fan favorites "Game of Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire," as well as the critically acclaimed "Boss" and "American Horror Story." This is its first Golden Globe win of the night. Stars Lewis and Danes are also nominated for Best Actor and Actress, respectively.

Russell Brand Doing 'Quite Well' After Split From Katy Perry

If Russell Brand is feeling down about his split from pop star Katy Perry, he wasn't showing it to reporters this weekend.

Brand was out promoting his upcoming FX TV series, "Strangely Uplifting," when he was asked how he was holding up after filing for divorce in December. According to People, Brand told them, "Quite well, thank you. Are you asking because of recent events? You are making the mistake of seeing time as linear. The brilliant American author Kurt Vonnegut, he'll tell you that if you imagine reality as experienced simultaneously, events become redundant."

Brand went even further, replying, "Yes, I am," when asked if he was happy.

"Strangely Uplifting," which premieres this spring, will be a personal project for Brand, centering on him discussing current events in front of an intimate audience.

Promoting projects is sure to keep Brand in the public eye through a solid chunk of 2012. In addition to "Uplifting," Brand will also throw his support behind "Rock of Ages," the big-screen version of the Broadway musical, which co-stars Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise and Julianne Hough and opens June 1.

Perry also seemed to be getting on with things, making her first public appearance since the split this week while filming a new Adidas commercial just days after she canceled a scheduled appearance at the People's Choice Awards.

The reasons behind the couple's split are still only speculative, but sources told TMZ that there was tension due to Perry's strict religious beliefs while the Daily Mail reported that recovering drug addict Brand was not fond of some of Perry's friends.

Golden Globes 2012 Predictions: Best Picture

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 06:03 AM PST

'The Artist' and 'The Descendants' seem poised to take home top prizes, but MTV News has some different suggestions.
By Eric Ditzian

MTV News has already made its pick for the Best Movie of 2011. But "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," for some bizarre and troubling reason, didn't make the cut for the folks in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, even though 10 films were nominated across two categories.

Thus, tonight's Golden Globes celebration will not bestow its ultimate prize upon David Fincher's sizzling exploration of Swedish sex, psychology and sadism. But there remain many worthy contenders facing off on Globe night. Which films will triumph? Check out our picks and our unrealistic wishes below:

Best Picture - Musical or Comedy
We remain baffled by the adulation for "Midnight in Paris," a film whose fantastical exploration of Paris in the 1920s is more cliché-ridden than your average GOP primary stump speech. And how "My Week With Marilyn," despite an admirably imitative performance from Michelle Williams, snuck into this category would be a question we'd ask if the extent of HFPA's corruption weren't a matter of public record. We've got no beef with the rest of the nominees, especially considering "50/50" and "Bridesmaids" both ended up on MTV's year-end list. Alas, neither is likely to win.

Who Will Win: For anyone who thought "The Hurt Locker" and its sub-$20 million box-office haul made for too populist an awards-season darling, meet "The Artist," a silent, black-and-white film that has so far reeled in less than $8 million domestically.

Who Should Win: Any human who tells you "Bridesmaids" wasn't the funniest movie of 2011 is either a liar or dead inside. Or a producer of "The Artist." Kristen Wiig drunkenly romping around an airplane? Maya Rudolph pooping in the street while clad in a wedding dress? Jon Hamm offering up the most lovably hateable douche bag in recent cinematic memory? That's a whole lot of win. Too bad HFPA won't agree.

Best Picture - Drama
This category could turn any which way Sunday. A surging "Help" took home the most prizes at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on Thursday. Not that the CCMAs are a terribly good predictor of the Globes. What's more, "The Help" is likely going to triumph in the acting categories rather than Best Picture. When George Clooney is in the mix, you can never count out one of his films, so "The Descendants" could pull off an eyebrow-raising win. The same can be said for legends like Martin Scorsese ("Hugo") and Steven Spielberg ("War Horse"). Anything. Can. Happen.

Who Will Win: People love Clooney. And movies about families dealing with grief. And Clooney. Why people don't love Matt Damon and his similarly themed "We Bought a Zoo" as much remains a mystery. "Descendants" will take this one home.

Who Should Win: Um, "Dragon Tattoo"? Or "Drive"? Right, those films didn't get nominations. "Moneyball" is an exceedingly ordinary baseball movie, "War Horse" is just too silly at its core to take seriously (even though it did reduce us to tears before the credits rolled), and "Help," as stellar as its individual performances were, just didn't wow us as a whole. Scorsese's "Hugo" is the last film remaining standing. We're cool with that.

Ricky Gervais At Golden Globes: Who Will He Chide?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 06:03 AM PST

'I don't care if you're offended,' show's host says about his jokes.
By Kara Warner

One of the many joys in watching live awards shows is the anything-can-happen factor. We can predict winners and losers and attendees and such, but we really never know for sure who will say what and when, or whether there will be any technical difficulties, wardrobe malfunctions or other unexpected excitement.

With regard to the Golden Globes — which typically seem to allow room for more surprises than say the Oscars or the Grammys — the most unpredictable and interesting factor going into the show this year is host Ricky Gervais. Who will he poke fun at this year? Our hope: everyone. We love our celebrities and all the movies and television shows they make, but so much of the Hollywood machine is so exaggerated and ridiculous, it's great to watch someone who is as intelligent as he is funny take the industry to task for its most-outlandish offenses.

Gervais has said that just like last year, he will be pulling no punches tonight.

"[Am I] nervous? No. What's the worst that can happen?" he told reporters at a Television Critics Association press event for his HBO show "Life's Too Short." "I end my career once a week if you read the press. I do things that could end my career now. That's my extreme sport. If you get fun with it, which I do and I demand, and you get your own way and are happy with what you've done, then nothing can happen to you. You're bulletproof. Everything I say, I can justify it, I can stand by it, as I do every joke I did last year, then I don't care. I don't care if you're offended."

This is exactly what we want to hear from Gervais. He doesn't single out anyone maliciously; he does it all in the name of entertainment.

"I'm going to do a monologue about what happened during the year, and then introduce six or seven people as I did last year. I've got nothing against any of those people in the room," he said. "I've worked with many of them. I like many of them. I admire them. They're just gags. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or give them a bad night or undermine the moral fabric of America. I'm a comedian."

Given what we know about Gervais and those we expect to be present at the Globes, here are a few things we think he might address:

Movies: A controversial statement of some kind about "The Help," something cheeky about "The Artist" having no color or sound, poking fun at the heavy hitters in the Best Actor category, the old guard (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio) vs. the young upstarts and their multiple films nominated (Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender). We hope he loved "Bridesmaids" as much as we did and gives it extra attention.

TV: The new "Two and a Half Men," Charlie Sheen's new career, Steve Carell leaving "The Office," the nudity and sex featured in HBO shows, the oddities of "American Horror Story," lack of enthusiasm for "Glee." We have no idea what shows Gervais might love; maybe "30 Rock" and "Breaking Bad"? Here's hoping we find out via his quips.

Other pop-culture topics: Kim Kardashian's marriage is long over, but Gervais likely has a fresh take; the royal wedding; British things vs. American things; the presidential election; Beyoncé and Jay-Z's new baby, Blue Ivy.
