'Jersey Shore' And More TV To Look Forward To In 2012

With a new series from Steven Spielberg plus the return of 'Mad Men' and many others, TV addicts have a lot to get hyped about.

"Revenge," "American Horror Story," "New Girl," 2 Broke Girls," "Girl Girl" (OK, we made that last one up). Coming off one of the most satisfying fall seasons in recent memory, 2012 has a lot to live up to in order to keep TV addicts hyped up in the new year. Admit it, couch potatoes: We've been spoiled. Can the upcoming midseason keep the momentum going?

Perhaps the biggest hope for viewers is Steven Spielberg's "Smash," a new musical series starring "American Idol" alum Katharine McPhee and "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing. Although "Glee" comparisons are unavoidable (OMG, people are singing songs and dancing on prime-time TV!), the extended previews suggest a more mature affair. "Smash" is a warts-and-all depiction of what it's like to create a new Broadway show. Competing actresses, sparring producers, Anjelica Friggin' Huston in your living room chewing scenery every week ... What's not to love?

Spielberg isn't the only movie maverick headed to the television world this year. "Paranormal Activity" mastermind Oren Peli is partially responsible for ABC's "The River," in which a travelogue host goes missing in the Amazon, sparking a rescue mission led by his wife, son and former TV crew. Will Peli's patented "found footage" device work on the boob tube?

Small-screen suspense is hot thanks to Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story," whose addictive first season wrapped up before Christmas. However, Murphy's Achilles heel is sustaining quality and buzz over multiple seasons (see "Nip/Tuck," "Glee"), so fans are cautiously optimistic for its return in the fall. Murphy also has his hand in a new sitcom pilot about a gay couple and a surrogate that caused a bidding war between all the major networks, not to mention several feature films in development and the third season of "Glee," which continues to roll along. Fingers crossed Murphy can stay focused enough on F/X's breakout gothic hit to keep season two just as juicy and batsh-- as its debut.

Speaking of shows that derailed after one season, "Heroes" creator Tim Kring is back on the network horse, bringing the touchy-feely father-son drama "Touch" to Fox this spring. The premise? Kiefer Sutherland plays a widowed dad struggling to take care of his mute, autistic son. Can't wait to watch Ryan Seacrest awkwardly interview Kiefer in the "Idol" audience about that one.

There's a mini-"Lost" reunion happening on Fox thanks to "Alcatraz," J.J. Abrams' latest. It's a (what else?) convoluted mystery that takes place on an island! Instead of plane crash survivors, this one's about long-deceased guards and inmates reappearing decades later. Hurley (a.k.a. Jorge Garcia) co-stars. No word yet on whether the smoke monster will make a cameo.

In 2011, MTV had a breakout year with scripted television thanks to action-packed "Teen Wolf" and sharply hilarious "Awkward." Both of your faves will be back this summer, with "Teen Wolf" expanding to 24 episodes and "Awkward." boasting new love woes for Jenna. Brooklyn-based comedy "I Just Want My Pants Back" will get the full-season treatment in February. And millions of fist-pumpers will be happy when America's most popular partiers get belligerent in Seaside Heights when the fifth season of "Jersey Shore" spreads like an STD on January 5.

On the opposite end of the TV spectrum, AMC's "Mad Men" will finally be back in March. We've waited longer than usual for new Don Draper exploits thanks to a behind-the-scenes kerfuffle between show creator Matthew Weiner and the cable network. Now that the contracts have been signed, we can all jump back into the adventures of the 1960s advertising world. For those of you who forgot where we left off (spoilers on the way), Don's engaged to secretary Megan, his (crazy!) ex-wife is shacking up with a politician, Joan's preggers and their preteen daughter is a chronic masturbator. And you wonder why this show wins a million Emmys.

The other Emmy favorite, "30 Rock," has found itself stuck between a very odd rock and hilarious hard place now that Kim Jong-il has passed away. Remember, last season ended with Jack Donaghy's wife, Avery Jessup, kidnapped in North Korea and forcibly married to Jong-il's son Kim Jong-un. Given the breaking news, the show's sixth season may need to re-vamp its planned plotline with Margaret Cho as the recently deceased dictator. Showrunner Robert Carlock recently told the press that "30 Rock" plans on airing the episodes they've already banked with Cho and aren't even sure they'll kill off her character at all. Sounds twisted!

Reality junkies are stoked for the second season of Lifetime's "Dance Moms," launching January 10. Pittsburgh's leading instructor for aspiring Broadway starlets Abby Lee Miller is looking to add a new dancer to her competitive troupe. Grab-the-popcorn alert: A new dancer means a new mom with whom she will clash. Loudly. Plus, producers have smartly signed on rival Candy Apples dance instructor Cathy Nesbitt-Stein for another batch of episodes.

2012 will also bring us explosive new seasons of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" (long in the can and still making headlines thanks to public feuds between castmembers), Oxygen's late-bloomer "The Glee Project" and a bigger, badder, bolder "X Factor" this fall. "X"-man Simon Cowell recently promised a "blood bath" behind the scenes. RIP awkward host Steve Jones?

Aspiring fashionistas have a lot to add to their DVRs. ABC Family's latest is called "Jane by Design," sort of a weekly "Devil Wears Prada" for the teenage set. NBC is premiering Elle Macpherson and Jessica Simpson's reality competition "Fashion Star" in March. Lifetime is airing a full "Project Runway All Stars" season (featuring MTV News fave Sweet P!) as well as a new show called "24 Hour Catwalk," hosted by Alexa Chung. The CW has a "Kitchen Nighmares"-type series about modeling agencies called "Running Out of TV Ideas," I mean, "Remodeled." Lastly, Rachel Zoe's former assistant Brad Goreski gets top billing in Bravo's "It's a Brad, Brad World," beginning January 2. That's a lot of look.

And finally, as if you need any reminding, "American Idol" is back for its 11th season on January 18. Last year boasted beefy ratings despite star Simon Cowell jumping ship, a winner who shattered Billboard country records and more frilly scarves than HSN's stockroom courtesy of new judge Steven Tyler.

However, last year's "AI" premiered in a pre-"Voice," pre-"X Factor" landscape. With NBC's blind-auditions-and-Xtina-in-a-swivel-chair gimmick returning in a cushy post-Super Bowl spot (where, coincidentally, "Idol's" sophomore season kicked off in 2003), and with "The X Factor" shattering pre-conceived notions of what reality production value can be, will the aging Fox staple now seem quaint? Or perhaps it will feel like a familiar hug from a grandmother. Regardless, even if the reality juggernaut loses half its audience, it will still make the network oodles of money. In other words, "American Idol" may outlive us all.

What shows are you most excited to see return? Any new series already set on your DVR? Let us know in the comments!

Maino Predicts He'll Be In Katy Perry, Rihanna Love Triangle

'I'm gonna be like a different person' in 2012, rapper jokes to Sway on 'RapFix Live.'

With 2011 out of the door and the New Year upon us, Maino is looking forward to the coming 12 months. Every year since 2009, the Brooklyn MC has released a predictions-themed song. On his "2011 Predictions" Main successfully guessed that Lindsay Lohan would have relapsing bouts with alcohol and that the Throne would sell over a million records. On Wednesday's "RapFix Live," Maino dropped some major 2012 predictions.

"I got a couple," the rapper admitted when Sway asked him what reveals he had for the next 12 months. "Forget what you heard, Obama's gonna win."

That wasn't all, however. "This is the year you gonna see a transformation for me. I'm gonna be like a different person. I'm gonna get caught up in a love triangle," Maino said, pausing before adding, "with Rihanna and Katy Perry."

Maino's playful prediction may seem far-fetched, but with the news that Perry's hubby Russell Brand has filed for divorce, the pop star is back on the market. As far as Rihanna, the Bajan beauty revealed to Ellen DeGeneres in a November 2011 interview that she is very single. So from a logistical standpoint anything is possible — we guess.

That wasn't all. Maino, who has stood as one of rap's top street artists, says he is about to undergo an artistic change as well. "I'm leaving rap. I'm leaving hip-hop. I'm gonna become an R&B artist. I'ma be the artist formerly known as Maino, but my new name is gonna be Jaguar Paw," he joked. "These is my predictions."

What do you think of Maino's predictions for 2012? Tell us in the comments!

T.I. Balancing 'Daddy' And Rapper Personas

'You ain't gonna hear that music on that mixtape or this album,' Tip tells MTV News of his family-man side.

There are two sides to T.I., and ever since his 2003 breakout track "T.I. vs. T.I.P.," the Atlanta rap star has been exploring this duality. With the premiere of his new VH1 reality series "T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle," T.I. is showing yet another side — the family man. So how does he balance it all?

"That's when I go home," T.I. told MTV News of his role as a husband and father. "You ain't gonna hear that music on that mixtape or this album."

On New Year's Day, T.I. dropped his F--- da City Up mixtape, and next up is his eighth solo album, Trouble Man. Tip, who has never shied away from putting his street persona on display, makes it clear that there is a distinct line between "T.I. the rapper" and "T.I. the father figure." What fans see on TV isn't necessarily what they'll get when they listen to his new records.

"When I go home, that's who I am, what you see on the show. Now, what you're gonna hear through them records is when I hit the streets, when I'm out movin' and groovin' — this is the person that must maintain this personality because it's a cold world out here," he said. "At home, I could be Mr. Harris or Daddy or whatnot, but when I'm out here in these streets it's gonna have to be Tip because that's what it takes to make it out here."

What do you think of T.I.'s persona on "T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle"? Tell us in the comments!

It looks like there is no reconciliation in sight for Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. After announcing their separation back in November, the "New Girl" star officially filed for divorce a month later.

According to People magazine, Deschanel filed the documents with L.A. County Superior Court on December 27. The papers list their actual date of separation as October 31 and cite "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the split.

Although Deschanel spoke with the magazine recently, she didn't have much to say about the end of her relationship with Gibbard but did mention that they will likely remain friends. "We're friendly," she told People. "It's all fine."

Check out a breakup playlist of Death Cab and She & Him songs.

Deschanel's statement reflects a similar sentiment that a source told Us Weekly at the time of their separation: "It was mutual and amicable. There was no third party involved."

Deschanel's star power has been on the rise over the past few years, particularly after her scene-stealing turn in "(500) Days of Summer" and "Our Idiot Brother," but more recently since the debut of her critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-nominated new sitcom "The New Girl." Gibbard has been equally busy with Death Cab for Cutie promoting the release of their seventh studio album, Codes and Keys, which was recently nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.

The couple were introduced by their mutual manager three years ago. They got engaged in 2008 and were married in 2009. They have no children.

Days after it was announced that Katy Perry and Russell Brand are ending their marriage comes word that the pop star plans to attend next week's People's Choice Awards.

In a Wednesday (January 4) press release, Perry's attendance was announced alongside Ashley Greene, Nina Dobrev, Liam Hemsworth, Julianne Hough, Vanessa Hudgens, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence, to name a few. This will mark Perry's first scheduled appearance since news broke that she and Brand are getting divorced.

The show will take place January 11 in Los Angeles, airing live on CBS. The singer is up for seven awards, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Pop Artist and Song of the Year for "E.T."

Perry hasn't spoken about the split since the holiday announcement; however, the People's Choice Awards marks the beginning of a slew of expected appearances from the singer. She's also slated to make two appearances on her California Dreams Tour later this month on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another January 22 in the Philippines.

Perry's next awards-show appearance could take place February 12 at the Grammys, where she's up for two awards: Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Firework."

Brand released a statement at the time of the announcement, saying, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends." Shortly after the announcement, he was spotted in London and the U.K.'s Mirror reports that when a fan wished him a "Happy New Year," he responded, "Here's hoping it gets happier."

Friends tell People magazine they were "shocked" the kooky twosome split after only a year of marriage. "I was really surprised that Russell filed for divorce so quickly — especially at Christmastime," the source said. "I thought they would be together for a long time. Maybe not forever — but definitely not just 14 months."

The source added that despite the trouble, "They were always laughing. They were very affectionate, always holding hands. They seemed like they were really in love." Another friend hoped that they could have worked through their marital woes. "These aren't people who give up," the second source said. "I always thought they would work on their marriage if they had trouble."

Taylor Swift In 'Les Miserables': Fans Weigh In

'I hope she can pull it off,' one fan tells MTV News.

Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper's new "Les Miserables" movie, beating out more established actors including Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. Opinion on the street (Broadway, of course) is mixed.

Pennsylvanian Molly Washok, 17, is very pleased with the prospect of seeing Swift as Eponine on the big screen. "I seriously love 'Les Miz.' It's a great Broadway musical," she said. "And I've seen Taylor Swift in shows and I love her so much. I'm a big fan of both, so it makes me excited."

Long Islander Katie Kendrick, 20, is also a fan of Ms. Swift but not as certain of her chops. "I love Taylor Swift — I bought her CDs, I have everything. But I'm not sure she'll be able to hit those notes that Eponine hits in her songs," Kendrick said.

If she's cast in "Les Miserables," Swift will join a group of A-list actors that includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. (Amanda Seyfried has reportedly been offered the role of Cosette.) Among these veterans, Kendrick noted, Swift would stand out as the novice.

"Taylor Swift has only been in one movie and it was 'Valentine's Day,' where she had a role for 10 minutes, tops. And all these other actors have been in numerous roles. They're very well known in the acting industry while Taylor Swift is known in the singing industry," she said. "I wish her luck, but I'm not sure she'll be able to live up to the expectations that have been set previously."

Keely Kwok, 21, from Hamilton, Ontario, is willing to give Swift the benefit of the doubt. "She does have an incredible voice, I'll give her that," Kwok said. "It's a really great musical, so I hope she can pull it off."

Twenty-one-year-old New Yorker Julia Menn was less diplomatic in her assessment of Swift's credentials. "There are so many better people to play that part," Menn said. "I'd prefer Evan Rachel Wood, actually. I think she'd be fantastic."

So would Menn see a Wood-less "Les Miserables" when it hits theaters this December? "Well, since Hugh Jackman's in it, yes, I would."

'Jersey Shore' Stars Say Season Five Shows 'Lighter Side'

If there's an underlying plotline to the fifth season of MTV's "Jersey Shore" — which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. — it may very well be "There's no place like home."

That's according to the "Shore" stars themselves, who told MTV News that, unlike their Italian holiday, the new season of the show is short on infighting, head-butting, vehicular mishaps, ill-fated hookups, malicious dog-poop capers and drama of all varieties and long on what they've come to be known for — namely, partying.

"You're gonna see a lighter side of us in Jersey," Ronnie assured us. "We have a lot more fun as compared to Italy. People were fighting, running heads into walls, bottles being thrown — it was just a lot of drama. Jersey is going to be a lot more fun."

"You'll actually see how much we miss Jersey. We missed it so much, we just hit the ground running," added Pauly D, who's already gone on record as saying season five is his "best." "The second we got back from Italy, we went straight to Jersey and just had fun with it."

Part of that fun involved getting back to basics — the kinds of things that were tough to come by in Italy and core tenets that any and all "Jersey Shore" fanatics know by heart.

"Stuff you take for granted on a day-to-day basis, that's what we wanted to do," Pauly said. "Haircut, gym, tanning ... Vinny was cutting our hair."

"We wanted easy girls," Vinny added with a laugh.

Yep, they're definitely back.

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

Can 'Bridesmaids' Go On Without Maid Of Honor Kristen Wiig?

Actress tells Hollywood Reporter she has no plans to act in or co-write a 'Bridesmaids 2.'

With all the word-of-mouth buzz and award consideration the ladies and gents of "Bridesmaids" have received, it makes sense that there would be talk of a sequel to the $100 million-grossing, bona fide box-office hit. What comes as a surprise, however, is the fact that Universal might consider moving forward with a second movie without its star and co-writer Kristen Wiig.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wiig will neither co-write another "Bridesmaids" nor return to her role as Annie Walker. Wiig hinted that she and co-writer Annie Mumolo have other plans.

"We aren't working on that," Wiig told the Reporter. "Annie and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else."

When MTV News contacted Universal for comment, they said they would ideally like to have the entire cast back for #2. But if an idea for a good sequel arises, Universal may move forward, Wiig or no Wiig.

"We are over the moon with the success of 'Bridesmaids,' and if we do a sequel we want to get it right," a Universal rep told the Reporter. "We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."

Producer Judd Apatow also seems up for moving forward with a sequel, but did not comment on whether he would do so without Wiig and Mumolo's involvement.

"The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one," Apatow said in a statement to the Reporter. "We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year."

Ron Paul's Strong Run In Iowa Excites Young Voters

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:05 AM PST

Thanks to solid support from caucus voters under the age of 30, Paul finished a solid third in Tuesday's primary.
By James Montgomery

Mitt Romney may have edged Rick Santorum to take Tuesday's Iowa caucus, but Ron Paul's third-place finish gives his campaign plenty of momentum heading into next week's New Hampshire primary ... and new data indicates he owes much of that showing to the support of young voters in the state.

According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, four percent of all eligible Iowa voters under the age of 30 took part in Tuesday's presidential caucuses, and Paul was the clear-cut favorite among them, drawing the support of 48 percent of the under-30s, compared to 23 percent for Santorum and 14 percent for Romney.

As part of MTV's ongoing Power of 12 campaign, MTV News was on the ground in Iowa, speaking with those same young voters who lifted Paul to his third-place finish, and on Tuesday night, they were feeling excited and empowered by the process, and about what lies ahead next week for their candidate.

"Even if Dr. Paul doesn't win [the Republican nomination], he's still woken up America," caucus-goer John Stein said. "There's definitely a lot of activists ready to promote liberty in America now."

"I believe that we see support for him because of the fact where technology plays such a pivotal point of our lives, and no one wants to have their private lives for the world to see," 19-year-old Zach Miller added. "And Ron Paul's an advocate for privacy and personal liberty, and that's one of the key issues of why I support him."

Most Paul supporters we spoke to mentioned his willingness to stick to his core beliefs — and his libertarian-leaning policies — as reasons why he stands out from his fellow Republicans presidential hopefuls, and why they hope he'll secure the nomination.

"I really support Ron Paul because of his libertarian position on things, like [he's] fiscally conservative but socially more liberal, and that's not a viewpoint that a lot of the more mainstream Republicans have," 19-year-old Jacob Smith said. "Sometimes it's a little more difficult to convince them that it's a good thing, and so a lot of support is going to Romney and them, but [they're] not as consistent, and they don't follow the Constitution as much, and staying with the Constitution is very important to me, because it's what our country is built on."

And though young Paul supporters know their candidate faces a tough challenge in New Hampshire, they're confident he can carry the state and they feel his strong showing in Iowa is just the beginning of a groundswell of momentum.

"We're turning out in droves for people like Ron Paul," 21-year-old Cahlen Brancheau said. "And [we're] driving for more strong solutions."

Are Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel Engaged?

On Wednesday (January 4), the Internet was abuzz after a report that Justin Timberlake had proposed to longtime girlfriend Jessica Biel.

While there had been some chatter about a possible engagement before the holidays, the rumor mill went into overdrive when sources confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple had gotten engaged in late December.

While neither of the stars' reps has commented on the report, Us says the singer/actor asked Biel to marry him while vacationing in Jackson, Wyoming. "Justin knows how much she loves snowboarding and the mountains, so it was the perfect place," the source said of the reported proposal.

The couple, who began dating in 2007, broke up briefly in early 2011, weeks after they attended Oscar parties together. According to the Us source, "When they reunited, they had a conversation about taking the next step." Another source close to the singer said he's "never been happier" and that "he knew it was the right time to propose."

At the time of their March 2011 split, a rep explained, "Addressing the media speculation regarding Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's relationship, we are confirming that they mutually have decided to part ways. The two remain friends and continue to hold the highest level of love and respect for each other."

While the two got together again shortly after the breakup, they have always been plagued by speculation about their relationship, whether it be that they are breaking up or getting married.

When asked about having to deal with all the attention, Biel told Vogue in 2012, "I don't want to talk about it. I don't feel the need to clear anything up. It's the most precious thing that I have in my life, and I care about it so much that I don't care about what anyone says or thinks. I have just not addressed it in any real way, and I'm not going to. It's mine. And I really like that about it."

The news of his engagement comes weeks after Timberlake's former flame Britney Spears announced her engagement to longtime beau Jason Trawick.

'The Dark Knight Rises' Prologue: Bane Explained!

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:28 AM PST

MTV News walks you through the garbled dialogue and intricate plot of the Batman teaser.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Bane in "Dark Knight Rises"
Photo: Warner Bros.

Even two weeks after "The Dark Knight Rises" prologue debuted before select IMAX showings of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," everyone who saw it can't seem to stop talking about Bane and what he says — or at least what people thought he said.

Ever since the preview's premiere, there has been talk of tweaking audio levels and lowering background noise in order to make Bane more intelligible. Just Tuesday, a rumor circulated that Warner Bros. had provided IMAX projectionists with an adjusted soundtrack for the prologue. Warner Bros. denied the claim, but talk of changes persists.

If you've already seen the prologue, adjusting audio levels now won't help you until the July release of the finished film, so we've gone over the footage and decoded each story element and every line of Bane's dialogue for you. (Major spoilers ahead!)

The Setup
Most of the confusion about what's going on starts before we even see Bane. We jump right into the story without much explanation of what's going on. "Leaked" CIA documents, used as part of a viral campaign, fill in some of the blanks.

Dr. Pavel, a missing Russian nuclear physicist, seeks asylum in the United States with the help of the CIA. Pavel believes he is in immediate danger and goes into hiding. A group of mercenaries find him and negotiate with the CIA to deliver the scientist over to them safely, at the cost of $3 million. The prologue begins with that exchange.

Bane
The mercenaries bring along three unexpected guests to the party with the CIA. The leader of the soldiers informs the head agent that the men work for Bane. Eager to learn more about the masked man, the CIA agent brings the three men onto the airplane but only promises safe passage to the one who talks the most. Bane then speaks his first line as the agent threatens his men.

"Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane."

Bane and the agent exchange some words, during which we get some background on his character. His mask keeps him from experiencing severe pain caused by a yet-unknown ailment. It also was what made people pay attention to Bane in the first place.

"No one cared who I was until I put on the mask."

The Plan
From here, we see Bane's master plan play out. A large plane hooks onto the smaller one flown by the CIA and drags it into a nosedive. There's a small fight inside, but Bane and his men win handily. They lower a dead body in a bag into the plane and perform a transfusion with Dr. Pavel, so when the wreckage is found, the DNA matches the missing doctor.

As the group prepares to exit, Bane informs one of his younger partners in crime that he must stay behind in order to avoid suspicion. When the man asks Bane if they have started a fire, he replies with the now-famous line: "The fire rises."

Pretty straightforward, right?

'Breaking Dawn' Leading In Round One Of MTV Movie Brawl!

It's the brawl to win it all!

On Tuesday, we launched MTV Movie Brawl 2012, a winner-take-all tournament to pick this year's must-see movie. Starting with 32 films in an epic "play-in" round to pick 16 flicks that will make it into our March Madness-style bracket, the Brawl has kicked off with fans giving it 110 percent, determined to leave it all out on the field, and ready to step up and make plays.

This is what the playoffs are all about. As MTV News' team of analysts pointed out at the start of the tourney, there are three front-runners at this early point in the competition: "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," "The Hunger Games" and "The Dark Knight Rises." So far, two of those flicks are living up to expectations, while one is going to have a lot of questions to answer if it can't turn things around.

"Breaking Dawn" has staked out an early lead and has got to be an odds-on favorite to secure a #1 seed when the 16-team bracket is chosen at the end of this first round. Hunger Games has got its game face on and is trailing close behind; a number-one seed for this rookie sensation seems like a lock. "Dark Knight Rises," however, is not showing the determination and drive we'd expect from a film with such ravenous fans. Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie has settled into the #6 slot thus far and will have to pick up the slack if it expects to head into the bracket with any sort of momentum.

Voting in round one is open in MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

Films that have been flexing some unexpected Movie Brawl muscle include "John Carter" and "Dark Shadows." The former hits theaters in March, the latter in May; what they both have in common are fans coming out of the woodwork to support their underdogs and turn them into dark horses. Meanwhile, no one who's been paying attention to the cinematic landscape should be surprised that "Snow White and the Huntsman" has been playing like a savvy vet, given that the film is led by Kristen Stewart. Veteran leadership, especially from "Twilight" stars, is going to prove a key factor as the Brawl moves forward.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a few films that are going to have to look themselves in the mirror and ask if they truly want to be in this competition. "Skyfall" and "The Amazing Spider-Man," for instance, are both floundering in the back of the pack. Unless fans step up and vote for Bond and Spidey, these films are looking at an early trip home and months of second-guessing. And while we don't expect high-brow fare like Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" to be able to tussle with the big franchises, we were hoping for more from QT fans than a first-round exit.

So that's where we stand on the second day of the competition. Anything can happen at this point. Seriously. That's why we've just introduced a wild-card round in which fans will be able to add a few movies that didn't make the original 32 — Robert Pattinson's "Cosmopolis"? Emma Watson's "Perks of Being a Wallflower"? — and, if they deliver enough votes, slip them into the 16-movie bracket.

Voting in the first round closes Sunday, January 8, and the bracket kicks off on Monday, January 9.

What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It's time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

Fabolous has collaborated with a ton of MCs in his 10-plus years in the rap game. From Jay-Z and Lil Wayne to Rick Ross and Kanye West, Loso has spit with the best of them, but a feature with newcomer Meek Mill has the veteran Brooklyn lyricist especially excited.

Fab, who will be a guest on Wednesday's (January 4) "RapFix Live," invited Meek Mill to jump on "You Don't Know 'Bout It," a track off of his recently released There Is No Competition III mixtape.

"I think Meek is, like, young energy, what hip-hop needs," Fabolous told MTV News last month. "I always like to see new, young energy come into the game."

Meek hails from Philadelphia and has made his name as an artist on Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, but it isn't just Mill's skills on the mic that Fab admires. Loso also appreciates the "I'mma Boss" rapper's ability to overcome the hardships he faced on the street. "It shows a person from the same walk of life you come from reaching something that they wanted to do against the odds of what could've happened," Fabolous said of Meek's past.

"I know a little bit of his story where he went to jail and stuff like that, so it's good to see him actually doing something that he's pursuing and being successful at that. I like that as well, just even being able to collaborate with that."

Marvel movies struggling to stay competitive in MTV Movie Brawl 2012.
By Josh Wigler

Welcome to 2012, the year that's destined to change the comic book movie landscape forever. Not only is Christopher Nolan months away from closing out his smash-hit Batman trilogy with "The Dark Knight Rises," but two of the most important Marvel Comics movies of all time — "Marvel's The Avengers" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" — are about to be released as well.

With "Avengers," Marvel Studios is paying off years of buildup by putting Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more together in one monstrously sized flick, an unprecedented move in the comic book movie scene. The idea of seeing Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans in their signature superhero roles alongside one another — under geek god Joss Whedon's directorial vision, no less — seems positively irresistible.

In the case of "Spider-Man," here's a franchise that has already proven itself capable of raking in millions and millions of dollars, starring a wise-cracking web-head widely adored throughout the world. Except this time, Peter Parker's sporting darker shades of red and blue. Gone is series lead Tobey Maguire, replaced by British up-and-comer Andrew Garfield. Away too is Sam Raimi, with relatively unknown director Marc Webb of "(500) Days of Summer" stepping behind the lens. Rebooting the "Spider-Man" creative team and universe wholesale only five years after the last Maguire/Raimi joint is a risky gamble on Sony's part, but like "Avengers," we can't wait to see how it all shakes out.

Or can we?

Voting Is Open In MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

If you haven't heard, MTV Movies is in the midst of the MTV Movie Brawl 2012, a tournament that pits some of the year's biggest releases against one another to determine which movie you, the fans, are most excited for in the coming months. Currently, 32 flicks are slugging it out for an opportunity to snag one of next week's Sweet 16 seats, where the Brawl will transition into a single-elimination bracket tournament.

On the surface, there's no reason that "The Avengers" and "Spider-Man" shouldn't make it into the Sweet 16, if not further. But as it stands, two days into the competition, both of these movies are struggling in the vote, so much so that they're at serious risk of not making it past the first round.

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I'm shocked to see such a lack of support behind Earth's Mightiest Heroes and their friendly neighborhood wall-crawling pal. Has the word on the competition simply not spread to those of you who would vote for "Spider-Man" and "Avengers," or is the interest really not there? Despite every reason to be excited for these movies, can it be that at the end of the day, Marvel's biggest movies of 2012 simply aren't resonating with the moviegoing crowd?

I hope it's the former, not the latter. (I can only click "vote" for both movies so many times!) But if for some reason you're just not that interested in "Avengers" assembling and "Spider-Man" swinging into theaters this summer, I'm really curious to hear why. Why is it that you're not foaming at the mouth for two of the most important movies ever to come from the House of Ideas? Why aren't you sold yet?

Marvel fans... where are you?

Check out everything we've got on "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Marvel's The Avengers."

Iowa Caucus Comedown, Andrew Jenks Counts The Votes

'If I convinced a few of those ... girls I met the other night at Mullets to vote, maybe I could have swayed' the outcome, Andrew Jenks says from Iowa.
By Andrew Jenks

DES MOINES, Iowa — Up all night. It's 2 a.m. and I just got back from the Rick Santorum speech, followed by a Mitt Romney speech in which neither declared victory in the Iowa caucus.

Who ever, ever, ever thought this would happen? Romney, who a month ago never thought he could actually win in Iowa, one-on-one with Santorum, who two weeks ago nobody thought could win anything.

And the results we just got ... Romney by 8 votes. Eight votes! The closest Iowa caucus in history, it was declared on Wednesday (January 4). What?

If I convinced a few of those loud, beer-drinking girls I met the other night at Mullets to vote, maybe I could have swayed the election. If I'd pushed harder with that undecided couple ... things might have gone a different way.

But as I leave Iowa, I think about all those young people I've spoken with. I think about those eight that said they weren't going to vote. But it must be a proud day for them. They have a unique system: When it comes down to voting time, you go to a local school, firehouse, sometimes even a house, and talk it through with everyone — then you cast your ballot.

But I will also think about their lives in Iowa. Starting today, all of the cameras and worldwide press move on. On Thursday, Iowa will be a completely different state. And that is what makes this place so surreal. Within the last few weeks, I have gotten to know the locals, members of the media — I shook hands with nearly every candidate. But I don't know the name of a single person that lives on my floor in NYC.

When I saw Rick Santorum a few weeks back he smiled and said, "Oh, it's you guys again!" When I was at Drake, I saw a few students I met a month ago, and we talked for quite awhile. Leaving Iowa is strange, because it doesn't take long to really get to know everyone.

Justin Timberlake 'Seriously' Considering Elton John Role

Elton John calls JT '#1 on my wish list' to portray him in upcoming biopic.
By James Montgomery

Justin Timberlake

We may not be 100 percent sure of his current relationship status, but we can confirm that Justin Timberlake is getting very serious with Elton John.

We think. In response to John's claims that Timberlake is "#1 on my wish list" to portray the singer in an upcoming biopic — he told the Los Angeles Times that JT's portrayal of him in the David LaChapelle-directed "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore" video was "superb" — Timberlake is apparently "seriously" weighing the role, according to E! Online.

"Justin is taking it very seriously," a source "close to the singer" told E!'s Ted Casablanca. "He's working with his people to figure out exactly how to respond."

Casablanca also writes that "a very official response will be coming from Camp Timberlake momentarily," though, at press time, that response had yet to materialize.

In his Times interview, John said the film version of his life is "very much in the works," with a script penned by Lee Hall ("Billy Elliot") and an unnamed director "onboard." He also said that the biopic would be far different from the average Hollywood fare, which, given John's larger-than-life existence, shouldn't really be all that shocking.

"It's going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a 'Moulin Rouge!' " John said. "I just don't want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn't been like that. And it only goes up to when I go into rehab in 1990. It starts with me going into rehab and ends when I come out."

Jay-Z, Kanye's 'Paris' Gets Remix From Pitbull

It was probably inevitable, given the song's success and the fact that Jay-Z and Kanye West performed it approximately 736 times during their Watch the Throne tour, but now, Pitbull has put his own unique spin on a remix of "N---as in Paris," called, appropriately enough, "Latinos in Paris."

In the new version of the song — which features Will Ferrell's now-ubiquitous "We're going to skate to one song and one song only" but unfortunately skips the whole"it gets the people going!" bit — Pit and fellow rapper Sensato drop verses in English and Spanish and tell the tale of a pair of "chicos" wilding out in Paris. The accompanying video, which was directed by Pitbull, combines candid behind-the-scenes (much private-jet dancing) and performance footage with shots of the pair rapping in front of the Eiffel Tower and bounding throughout the streets of France's capital city.

Pitbull's "Latinos in Paris" is just the latest remix of what has become perhaps the hip-hop anthem of 2011. T.I. dropped his version back in October, and a slew of other big-name stars — including Chris Brown, T-Pain, Game, Trey Songz, Young Jeezy and Busta Rhymes — have also done verses over producer Hit-Boy's lilting beat.

Despite the song's mass appeal, Jay and Kanye have yet to release an actual video for it, though, during their run of sold-out shows at Los Angeles' Staples Center last month, they reportedly told the crowd that a live clip shot at the venue would be coming shortly.

Hugh Jackman is ready to hit the Great White Way once again. The actor has been confirmed to take the stage as the lead in "Houdini" Deadline reports.

"I have been deeply fascinated by the life of Harry Houdini since I was young, and in many ways I've been preparing for this role my whole life," Jackman said in a statement. "I am thrilled to be collaborating with this collection of artists who are all at the top of their game."

The play, written by "The Social Network" screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, will open during the 2013/2014 season. Sorkin will work with composer Stephen Schwartz and director Jack O'Brien.

"Rather than being a biography, 'Houdini,' told in a contemporary tone, tells the story of an epic battle that took place between the world's greatest illusionist and a trio of women, known as 'Spiritualists,' who convinced millions of people, including the editors of Scientific American and the New York Times, that they could communicate with the dead," Sorkin said. "The chance to collaborate with Stephen Schwartz, Jack O'Brien and Hugh Jackman on a new Broadway musical is a huge gift."

Before he takes the stage, Jackman has a number of other projects on his plate, including the big-screen adaptation of "Les Miserables," the next installment of "Wolverine" and "Unbound Captives" with Robert Pattinson. Most recently, Jackman starred in the one-man show, "Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway" and has also starred in "The Boy From Oz" and "A Steady Rain."

Iowa Caucus Near-Tie Energizes Romney, Santorum Supporters

Results estimates show top three GOP presidential candidates, including Ron Paul, each winning seven delegates in crucial first primary.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Everybody loves a winner, but sometimes not losing is the best you can hope for. After finishing in a near dead heat in the crucial first primary in the nation, Tuesday night's Iowa caucus, supporters of Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum were both feeling very good about their candidates' finishes.

With Romney coming out on top by a grand total of eight votes, his camp couldn't exactly shout from the rooftops, but, well, a win is a win in the closest race in Iowa caucus history.

After overseeing the caucus meeting at Drake University earlier in the night, student Sam Pritchard said at the Romney results party at the hotel Fort Des Moines late Tuesday that the evening belonged to the longtime GOP presidential front-runner.

"It's been a good win for Romney ... and it's going to provide him with the momentum he needs to win the rest of these primaries," Pritchard said of the candidate who had not spent much time in Iowa until a few weeks before the caucus. "If he did this in two weeks, what can he do for the rest of the year? ... It's exhilarating."

Though CNN reported that the bulk of Romney's votes came from caucusers 65 and older, Pritchard said that like third-place finisher Ron Paul's pull with young voters, the former Massachusetts governor could do the same. "If you look at the Ron Paul campaign and why a lot of the youth voters like him, some of it applies to Romney as well," he said. "He's a Washington outsider, and he's coming at it as somebody who wants to reform the system. By appealing to the moderates and independents, he can really capture the youth vote."

As a college student who is going to need a job when he graduates, Pritchard said he's counting on Romney's private-sector experience turning around companies to help him find employment when he leaves college.

Santorum spoke to his faithful at a celebratory gathering well before the final vote tally was announced. Santorum staffer Ryan Rutt, 26, called the night "very exciting." "Either way, it's been a huge success," Rutt said. "One way or the other, definitely a success for the Santorum campaign. Obviously, would love a big win, but this evening has been really exciting for all of us."

Also reveling in the unexpectedly come-from-nowhere near-win for Santorum was fellow staffer Jonathan Gehman, 29, who said he's cast his lot with the classic-conservative family-values candidate because of Santorum's conviction, positive campaigning and emphasis on faith and family.

"This could completely change the climate of the election right now, especially because you look at the top three and you have three very different people," added Joel Charles, 27, speaking of Santorum, Romney and libertarian third-place finisher Ron Paul.

While MTV News' PowerOf12.org correspondent Andrew Jenks told the Santorum team that he'd been getting blasted all Tuesday night by his young Twitter followers about the former senator's hardline stances against abortion and gay marriage, Gehman said he agreed "100 percent" with Santorum on those social issues. "I think there's a lot of young people in America with the same convictions," he said. "I don't think it's as exciting to speak out that way ... but I think there's a minority that is silent, and if they'd speak up, we would be the majority."

By Wednesday morning (January 4), CNN estimated that, of the 25 pledged delegates at stake in Iowa, Romney, Santorum and Paul each won seven, further muddling the bragging rights coming out of the nation's first presidential primary. All three candidates will now turn their attention to New Hampshire, where the fight will start all over again in the headlong rush to next Tuesday's primary.

New year, same story: Adele's unstoppable 21 sold more than 144,000 copies to claim the top spot on the first Billboard albums chart of 2012, easily outpacing Drake's Take Care, which landed at #2 with sales of nearly 72,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As it approaches the one-year anniversary of its release, 21 — which was 2011's biggest seller by a huge margin — shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, with this week's numbers, it has now sold some 5.8 million copies in the U.S., making it the best-selling album since Usher's massive Confessions, which moved 7.9 million copies in 2004.

Young Jeezy's TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition holds strong at #3 on this week's chart, selling more than 67,000 copies in its second week. Lady Antebellum's Own the Night is up next at #4 with sales of nearly 54,000 copies. And buoyed by the chart-topping success of single "Sexy and I Know It," LMFAO's Sorry for Party Rocking leaps from #16 all the way up to #5.

Florence and the Machine's Ceremonials (sales of more than 47,000 copies), the Black Keys' El Camino (more than 45,000), Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto (more than 44,000), Rihanna's Talk That Talk (more than 42,000) and the 40th installment of the ubiquitous Now collection (more than 41,000) round out the top 10.

The week's biggest debut belongs to Skrillex, whose new Bangarang EP opens at #19, with sales of nearly 24,000 copies. The Trent Reznor/ Atticus Ross "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" soundtrack makes its chart debut at #44, selling more than 14,000 copies. And, in a true sign that the holidays are officially over, Canadian crooner Michael Bublé's Christmas — which had topped the Billboard charts for the past two weeks — drops all the way down to #24, selling some 20,000 copies. 'Tis the season no longer.

Adele's 21 was also the top seller on iTunes, followed by Own the Night and Ceremonials. "Sexy and I Know It" was the best-selling song, beating out #2 "We Found Love" by Rihanna and Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain."
