Oscar 2012 Predictions: Best Picture

'The Artist' and 'The Descendants' lead MTV News' nominee picks for the Academy Awards' top prize.

In a few short hours, the conversation that has captivated film writers for months — "Who will be nominated for Best Picture?" — will become "Who will win the Academy Award for Best Picture?"

A new Academy rule once again changed the possible number of nominations for the top prize. What used to be a set number of 10 nominees now depends on the specifics of the Oscar ballots, and now the number of nominees can range from five to 10.

If it wasn't for that new stipulation, the announcement of Best Picture nominees might not have provided any surprises or drama, since five films are essentially guaranteed locks. Thankfully, the new rule adds an extra element of intrigue to an otherwise boring race.

MTV News' predictions for the Academy Awards' Best Picture nominees are:

"The Artist"
This is the name that should be read first, not just because it starts with "A," but because it will be the least surprising of the nominees. The silent throwback charmer "The Artist" has led the pack throughout awards season, and with its recent big wins at the Globes and the Producers Guild, things will only start to get interesting after this nominee is read.

"The Descendants"
Alexander Payne's drama about a family coping with the impending death of a mother and wife currently stands as the only real competition for "The Artist." A Best Picture (Drama) win at the Globes coupled with George Clooney's Best Actor win guarantee "The Descendants" will be in the running come Oscar night.

"The Help"
Though the film as a whole has not fared well with the guilds and critic circles, "The Help" is bolstered by its crowd-pleasing nature and two nomination-worthy performances by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. Despite an underwhelming win record, it's presence on shortlists should continue with the Oscars.

"Hugo"
Martin Scorsese's 3-D family-friendly ode to filmmaking, "Hugo" swept up a surprising number of critics and guild awards and is the only movie that realistically could steal Best Picture glory away from "The Artist" or "The Descendants." Scorsese's win for Best Director at the Golden Globes could mean a big last-minute push for the legend's latest film.

"Midnight in Paris"
This past summer's surprise indie hit went on to become Woody Allen's most financially successful movie of all time. "Midnight in Paris" stayed in the minds of many voters despite its release date outside the awards-heavy fall movie season, and it falls nicely in line with the most feel-good set of nominees in recent memory.

"Moneyball"
Call it the "Social Network" effect. This Aaron Sorkin co-scripted drama about an ostensibly boring subject matter went on to become a critical and box-office success story. Strong performances from Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill certainly helped the baseball drama, but its excellent script and assured direction by Bennett Miller earned "Moneyball" a spot on the nominees list.

"Tinker Tailor Solider Spy"
This seventh spot is the most fluid of all, with "War Horse" or "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" as potential substitutes. Many Oscar experts, however, have felt that the surprise resurgence of the British spy drama "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy" will be the story of tomorrow's nominations. (Here's to hoping for Gary Oldman's first nod.) Strong critical reception, combined with modest financial success and the Academy's British vote could make for the category's only surprise.

Tracy Morgan Leaves Sundance, Blames 'High Altitude' For Sickness

"30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan left Utah's Park City Medical Center on Monday afternoon after he fell ill
following an awards event at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.

As rumors swirled about what caused his health issues, the star took to Twitter to explain the incident and assure fans that he is back on his feet and ready to work. "Superman ran into a little kryptonite," he wrote. "The high altitude in Utah shook up this kid from Brooklyn."

Morgan thanked the staff at the hospital and said he was planning to return to work on the "30 Rock" set today. "Gotta thank the AMAZING medical staff and all my supporters! Love you," he added, throwing in a shout out to the New York Giants for their ticket to the Super Bowl. TMZ posted a photo of Morgan walking through the airport with a breathing tube under his nose attached to an oxygen tank.

Morgan was receiving an award at the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards in Park City, Utah on Sunday when he seemed disoriented during his speech and was escorted out of the building a short time later, where he fell unconscious. He was rushed by ambulance to the Park City Medical Center and a spokesperson for the hospital said that no drugs or alcohol were found in his system. A rep for the actor released a statement explaining, "from a combination of exhaustion and altitude, Tracy is seeking medical attention ... He is with his fiancée and grateful to the Park City Medical Center for their care. Any reports of Tracy consuming alcohol are 100 percent false."

Morgan, 43, received a kidney transplant two year ago and was at Sundance for a screening of the film "Predisposed," in which he stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo. His publicist denied that Morgan -- a recovering alcoholic who was arrested twice for driving under the influence in 2005 and 2006 -- appeared intoxicated at the festival.

The co-director of "Predisposed," Ron Nyswaner, told the Associated Press that Morgan's collapse resulted from "altitude sickness combined with his diabetes. And he hadn't eaten. He hadn't had enough water." Morgan's publicist, Lewis Kay, said hospital officials found no drugs or alcohol in the actor's system.

Florence And The Machine Will 'Keep It Pure' On Upcoming Tour

'It's definitely going to be about showcasing the music,' Florence Welch says of U.S. trek, which kicks off April 14.

On Monday (January 23), Florence and the Machine officially announced their spring U.S. tour, a run of shows that kicks off April 14 in Santa Barbara, California, and wraps May 12 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with a handful of festival dates sprinkled in for good measure.

It's the first proper stateside tour Flo & Co. have launched in support of their Ceremonials album (they played a light schedule of radio dates at the end of the year). But if you think they'll be matching that record's sonic scope with an equally gigantic stage show, you'd be wrong. After wowing audiences here with an unending stream of epic, wide-screen TV performances, this time out, they're going to let the songs stand on their own, as mastermind Florence Welch told MTV News.

"In a way, it's not going to be too big a production; we've done a lot of quite extravagant stuff, and that's been amazing, but for this tour, it's definitely going to be about showcasing the music," she said. "The songs are going to be the most important thing. It will be heavily based on the music ... no bells and whistles just yet, we're going to try and keep it quite pure."

So, in a sense, the upcoming trek will hark back to Welch's early days, in more ways than one. She's also taking along longtime friend and former collaborator Dev Hynes, currently recording as Blood Orange, as her opening act.

"It's going to be so fun, I can't wait. I used to be his backing singer in Lightspeed Champion, he took me on tour with him for one date, in Manchester [England]. He was one of the first members of Florence and the Machine, he used to play guitar with me at all my first gigs," Welch said. "Even though he was doing his own stuff, he used to come and play guitar for me. We'd be in these weird matching outfits, T-shirts and lumberjack trousers, doing Iggy Pop covers and I would play the drums, Green Day covers [too]. We covered the whole of Nimrod."

Dates for Florence and the Machine's spring tour:

» 4/14 -- Santa Barbara, CA @ Santa Barbara Bowl
» 4/15 -- Indio, CA @ Coachella
» 4/17 -- Reno, NV @ Grand Sierra Resort
» 4/18 -- Davis, CA @ Mondavi Center at UC Davis
» 4/20 -- Phoenix, AZ @ Comerica Theatre
» 4/21 -- Las Vegas, NV @ The Cosmopolitan
» 4/22 -- Indio, CA @ Coachella
» 4/27 -- Minneapolis, MN @ Hennepin Theatre
» 4/28 -- Milwaukee, WI @ Eagles Ballroom
» 4/29 -- St. Louis, MO @ Peabody Opera House
» 5/1 -- Dallas, TX @ Palladium Ballroom
» 5/2 -- Houston, TX @ Verizon Wireless Theatre
» 5/3 -- New Orleans, LA @ New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
» 5/8 -- New York, NY @ Radio City Music Hall
» 5/11 -- Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena
» 5/12 -- Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Event Center

'Workaholics' 'Constantly Stimulated' On First Date

Comedy Central stars share their silly slacker laughs with MTV News.

There's no normal way go on a date with four men simultaneously. That goes without saying. So, imagine going out with four guys who make a living rapping about what it's like to be a wizard (while in equally mystical costumes, natch) and have popularized an observational comedy game called "poop dollar." This is how I spent one recent afternoon at the Greenwich Village Country Club playing mini-golf with the cast of "Workaholics" for the most-recent edition of First Date.

On the show, three men (Anders Holm, Blake Anderson and Adam DeVine, playing Anders Holmvik, Blake Henderson and Adam DeMamp, respectively) spend their days at a middle-management gig at a telemarketing company. During their downtime, they get really wasted and go on incredible, hilarious adventures, sometimes with their friend, Karl Hevacheck (played by ... wait for it ... Kyle Newacheck), where things get weird — but rest assured, everything just happens to be OK in the end.

The way they were discovered almost echoes the optimistic slacker vibe the show lends: "I met Kyle and Blake at community college. Improv class, day one ... met 'Ders at the Second City," DeVine explained about the origins of their very real-life friendship. "And then we started making Internet comedy videos, and Comedy Central was like, 'We like how you guys aren't popular, but you have a voice, have a take,' and gave us a show."

The franchise has long been centered on new music acts, but since the show's premiere, a small sect of us at MTV News have taken it upon ourselves to spread its decidedly sophomoric gospel. The "Workaholics" brand of humor extends far beyond their show, as they attempted to out-funny each other's answers to the Date questions.

In regard to what a typical first date for them is like, DeVine bluntly replied, "For me, personally, just hard-core sex from the get-go ... smashin', beatin'-it-up sex." His co-star Anderson (who recently got into a pretty unfunny fall) retorted with a first-date plan that's too hot to write here — just know that his statement wrapped with, "I'm constantly stimulated."

And for those two-odd hours we shared on the course, it's safe to say we all were.

iCarly: iSoundtrack II features original songs from Nickelodeon cast and hits by Katy Perry, Ke$ha.
By Jocelyn Vena

Miranda Cosgrove is currently in between seasons of her hit Nickelodeon series, "iCarly," but that doesn't mean that fans can't dance their butts off to some of the show's choice tunes. On Tuesday (January 24), the teen star dropped iCarly: iSoundtrack II, and it's certainly filled with just enough Carly musical goodness to keep everyone at bay until the next season of the show kicks off.

Featuring original tunes from Cosgrove and her "iCarly" castmates, the album also includes hits like Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" and Ke$ha's "Blow." For her part, Cosgrove recorded her songs during her 2011 Dancing Crazy Tour, making the experience that much more frenzied in the best way possible.

"It was kind of crazy and chaotic, because I'd have a day off and I'd be in Boston or I'd be in New York and I'd go in the studio and work on these songs," Cosgrove told MTV News.

Cosgrove recently dropped the track "Million Dollars" off the record and elaborated a bit about why she wanted to record that song.

"It's kind of about like I was in a relationship and the person meant everything to me and then — I don't know — it's that feeling that you have when you break up with someone and you're kind of questioning everything," she said. "And you don't really know what went wrong and you really cared about the person. So I mean I just try to do songs that are different experiences I've been through and stuff that I think people that watch my show can relate to."

While she is looking forward to releasing this new batch of music, she certainly isn't ruling out hitting the studio to work on some of her own tunes. "I really want to. I love music and I love going on tour," she said. "I think touring is one of my favorite things because I get to meet all the people that watch the show and are into the music. It's totally different than being on a little sound stage."

NEW YORK — With Madonna's "W.E." taking home a Golden Globe just over a week ago (her "Masterpiece" won Best Original Song), much of the buzz at the film's NYC premiere Monday night (January 23) was about the upcoming Oscar nominations.

"Well, the Oscars, the nominations are coming out tomorrow, and fingers crossed, I hope my movie gets nominated for something," Madonna told MTV News on the red carpet. "I would be really grateful if it did, but if it doesn't, I got the Super Bowl — keep on going," she added, looking forward to her halftime performance at the February 5 game.

"Masterpiece" is on the short list for the Oscars, along with Elton John and Lady Gaga's "Gnomeo & Juliet" soundtrack tune "Hello Hello" and songs from will.i.am, Mary J. Blige and Zooey Deschanel.

When "Masterpiece" won the Globe, Madge thanked a number of her cohorts, including manager Guy Oseary, who was at the "W.E." premiere Monday; the song's producer, William Orbit; and the producer of "W.E.," Harvey Weinstein. "This is a surprise," she told the room, clutching her prize. "Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this acknowledgement. I need to thank my co-writers, Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, my co-producer William Orbit, who's not here, whom I adore."

When Madonna takes the Super Bowl stage next month, her performance will reportedly be "imagined" by Cirque du Soleil and Madonna's longtime choreographer/ creative director Jamie King. The event may also feature appearances from her "Gimme All Your Luvin" collaborators, including Nicki Minaj. According to reports, the set list for the Super Bowl show will include "Luvin" as well as Madonna classics like "Ray of Light," Vogue" and "Music."

Madonna drops her album M.D.N.A. later this year.

By Jocelyn Vena

Days after legendary songstress Etta James passed away from complications of leukemia, Adele took to her blog to recall the great influence the singer has had on her.

"What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original," she said, recalling her own encounter with the icon. "Her voice was breath taking and her songs are reflections we all recognise in some way or another. It's an honour every time I hear her voice. I saw her at BB Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever. Thank you to Etta James. And I send all my love to her family and friends."

Since the news broke of James' death, many big-voiced divas have opened up about the influence she had on them. "Etta James was a force to be reckoned with. A true gift to music and a woman of great spirit and courage. Her raw tone and the passion she put forth on a record spoke to me at a very young age and has continued to influence and inspire me throughout my career," Christina Aguilera said in a statement. "She will NEVER be forgotten, her voice will forever live on and she will inspire talent for generations to come."

Beyoncé also remembered the "At Last" singer within hours of learning of her passing. She was one in a long line of pop stars who paid their last respects to James, including Hayley Williams, will.i.am and Flo Rida.

"This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen," Beyoncé wrote on her blog. "Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."

Share your condolences with Etta James' friends and family on our Facebook page.

Beyonce's Sister Solange Plans To 'Spoil' Blue Ivy

'I'm excited to let the baby do whatever it wants,' the younger Knowles laughs to In Style of her niece.

These days, it's hard to thumb through a magazine without stumbling across a famous sister act. The Kardashians and the Braxtons are reigning reality TV divas. The fashionable Fannings have young Hollywood on lock. And the Williams sisters have been known to spark a rap beef when they're not racking up grand slams. But for sheer show-stopping glam, few girl duos gleam brighter than the Knowleses.

Houston natives Beyoncé and Solange have each carved out distinctively impressive lanes, with B owning the pop diva crown while Brooklyn-dwelling Solo has been shutting it down as a turntablist with a playlist as enviable as her closet.

And there's no sibling rivalry from this vantage point: Although Beyoncé celebrated the arrival of baby girl Blue Ivy Carter with husband Jay-Z just this month, she got a head start on motherhood by playing doting auntie to little sis Solange's one and only, 7-year-old Julez. So how does Solo plan to welcome big sister into the exclusive mommy club?

"This may sound awful, but I'm excited to let the baby do whatever it wants," she teased in the February issue of In Style, "in the same way my sister's done with my son."

Eagle-eyed Beyoncé fans know that nephew Julez has made a number of cameos in the superstar's reel. Among the more adorable was his feature in her Nintendo DSi spot, which found the green-eyed cutie cuddled on a couch with Aunt B as she enjoys some rare offstage downtime. Little J also turned up in the MTV doc "Year of 4," joining the Carters on a trip to Paris. Now, the fashion-blog favorite intends to return the favor.

"I'm going to get her back for all those late-night popcorn sessions and just spoiling my child to no end!" Solo added with a laugh.

When the youngest Knowles isn't DJ'ing, she's hard at work on her forthcoming album, for which she promised the mag she would walk in the funky footprints of '80s hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

PARK CITY, Utah — A lot has changed since the days of "Dawson's Creek." Joshua Jackson is off fighting a war between parallel universes on "Fringe." Katie Holmes is busy trying to get her husband down from that stupid couch. James Van Der Beek is ... somewhere.

But perhaps the most impressive arc of the old "Dawson's" gang belongs to Michelle Williams. Since wrapping up her role as troubled teen Jen Lindley on the WB series, Williams has racked up two Academy Award nominations, for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Blue Valentine." Very soon, she could be looking at her third, as many onlookers consider her a lock for a Best Actress nod for her work in "My Week With Marilyn," a role for which she's already won a Golden Globe.

Though her days on the "Creek" are long behind her, Williams' work has not gone unnoticed by her former co-stars. MTV News spoke with "Lay the Favorite" star Jackson at the Sundance Film Festival, where he expressed his joy in seeing his old friend's success in the awards circuit.

"It's surreal in that it would be surreal to see any of your friends [up for an Oscar]," he said. "It's amazing. She's an excellent actress."

Still, Jackson doesn't sound surprised by Williams' continued awards buzz.

"Of all of us, when we finished that show, she was the one who had the clearest idea about what it was that she wanted to do," he said. "To be able to go out and achieve that is no small feat. I just think it's wonderful."

That said, Jackson joked that Williams must be getting a bit tired of all the attention from Oscar voters: "You think she would be bored of it by now. She has to do a guns and explosions movie. 'Come on! Enough! Quit giving me these awards!' "

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance.

Oscar 2012 Predictions: Best Actress

After a fun-filled start to the 2012 awards season with the People's Choice Awards, Critics' Choice Movie Awards and Golden Globes, the nominations announcement for the 64th annual Academy Awards are upon us.

Before Tuesday morning's reveal, we're making a few predictions about which lucky leading ladies will get the good news. Here are our predictions for the nominees in the Best Actress category:

Viola Davis: Davis has been a shoo-in for awards-season love since early August, when audiences first experienced her critically acclaimed performance in "The Help." Davis has already won a Critics' Choice Movie Award and received a Globe nomination for her portrayal of sweet-natured maid Aibileen Clark; the Oscar nomination is next.

Meryl Streep: At this point in her illustrious career, it's basically a given that any year Streep makes an appearance in a film, she will be nominated. As the most-nominated actor in history, Streep has 16 Oscar nods under her belt, along with two wins, plus 26 Golden Globe nominations and eight wins — including this year's Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. And although the reviews of her film, "The Iron Lady," have been mixed, the praise for her performance is expectedly high.

Michelle Williams: Not many of those who first met Williams via her work on teen soap "Dawson's Creek" would have predicted that she would become one of the most talented, respected and critically acclaimed actresses of her generation, and yet, here we are. Following last year's nominations haul for her work in "Blue Valentine," the recent Globe winner should expect to hear her name called tomorrow.

Tilda Swinton: The nominating body within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is just as likely to recognize performances in films with mass audience appeal and success as it is to single out performers in films that push boundaries and step outside the box. Tilda Swinton is an actress who has done just that in several films, the most recent being the harrowing drama "We Need to Talk About Kevin," for which she will surely land an Oscar nomination.

Rooney Mara or Charlize Theron: Singling out a fifth nominee is a tough call given the number of strong performances by leading ladies this year. It's a toss-up between Oscar winner Charlize Theron's performance in the dark comedy "Young Adult" and Rooney Mara's bold, buzz-worthy transformation into Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Winner: Viola Davis. The woman is due; just check out her résumé for further proof.

Wiz Khalifa Knew Amber Rose Was An 'Amazing Superstar'

Wiz Khalifa has always believed in Amber Rose. His boo may have started out as a model, but Rose is now branching out into a number of different endeavors including fashion design, acting and making music.

"She's amazing. I love Amber so much, as a person and just watching her grow and just take things on," Wiz told MTV News on Saturday on the red carpet at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. "I just really get to sit back and watch her become this amazing superstar that I already knew she was. Now everybody else gets to see it."

Khalifa believes in his girl so much that he lent his vocals to her debut song "Fame," which Rose released online two weeks ago. On the single, the stately model sings of the pitfalls of being in the limelight. But "Fame" has received criticism, something Rose is familiar with.

"I knew when I put out this single that I was gonna deal with scrutiny or people that might like the song but just because it's me, they don't like it — they just don't want to give it a chance, but that's OK," Rose said on "RapFix Live" earlier this month. "They don't have to take me as an artist right now. I'll just have to prove it to them."

Despite the naysayers, Rose insists that she has been getting a lot of positive feedback on the record that she co-wrote. She is currently in the studio working on an album. "I have probably about five songs done, but I'm taking my time," she said, adding that she takes the music "very seriously."

Though Wiz always believed, at first it was difficult for Amber to embrace her growing popularity. "It was hard for me to embrace the fact that I was famous. Even just being out and taking pictures. I was always very quiet," she said. "It was a little weird for me and I had to get used to it. And now that I've embraced it, I'm ready to move on and do everything that I enjoy doing — one being music."

The final buzzer has sounded, the brawl for it all is over, and Robert Pattinson is the last man standing: "Cosmopolis" has won MTV Movie Brawl 2012.

His indie drama made for one hell of a Cinderella story in the vote-driven tournament to pick the must-see movie of the year. Entering the bracket as a #4 seed (following an impressive showing in the play-in round), "Cosmopolis" appeared to be facing an unavoidable Elite Eight ouster. What were the chances Pattinson's cerebral film about a young finance wiz taking a day-long limo ride though New York City would beat "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2"? Apparently pretty good. Fans banded together, choosing to support RPattz's post-vampire career rather than the franchise that made him a star. "Breaking Dawn" was sent packing.

And so, after easily fighting off "The Dark Knight Rises," "Cosmopolis" came to face "The Hunger Games," a brand-new franchise that had waltzed through the tournament and seemed to be the odds-on favorite to win the whole tourney. But it was not to be. After more than 3 million votes and a slew of lead changes, Pattinson's film beat back Jennifer Lawrence's series to become the undisputed champion of the Movie Brawl.

Hours before voting closed Monday afternoon (January 23), with "Cosmopolis" staking out an insurmountable lead and the MTV Movies team at the Sundance Film Festival, we broke the news to Pattinson's co-star, Paul Giamatti, that their film had won the tournament.

"Holy cow, that's astounding!" he said. "The fact of that is amazing. ... That's a really cool thing that it brings that visibility to that movie."

It's been a whirlwind few weeks in the tournament, so we'd like to thank all the fans who voted. The Brawl broke bigger than we could have ever hoped. Well over 5 million votes were cast. The competition spread wildly over Twitter and Facebook. Our comments sections caught fire as fans debated, argued and rallied. In the end, though, only one film could stand as the undisputed champion of the MTV Movie Brawl. Pattinson, Giamatti, director David Cronenberg and everyone connected to "Cosmopolis" — we salute you!

Jane Carrey Just Latest Famous Kid On 'American Idol'

Shannon Magrane, Jordin Sparks and Nikko Smith also have bold-name dads.
By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Katie Byrne

Jane Carrey on "American Idol"

For years, singers have done just about anything they could to get the attention the judges on "American Idol." There have been wacky costumes, shameless flirtation with the panel and some truly horrible original songs. But one surefire way to pique the interest of Randy, Steven and J.Lo (not to mention Simon and Paula in the past) is to reveal in your bio that your dad is already a bold-faced name.

The latest case-in-point is Jane Carrey, the 24-year-old daughter of actor Jim Carrey, who tried out for the show Sunday night. The judges enjoyed her rendition of Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About," while former Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez remembered seeing baby Jane on the set of "In Living Color" when she shared the stage with Carrey.

But she's just the latest "Idol" wannabe to use her name to get in the door. Just last week, we met lanky Shannon Magrane, whose father was the starting pitcher in two games for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1987 World Series. Magrane is among a long list of athlete offspring who've given "Idol" a shot.

In season seven, we briefly got to know Alyonka Larionov, daughter of former National Hockey League star Igor "The Professor" Larionov, who helped pave the way for Russian hockey players to join NHL teams back in the late 1980s. There was also season-four crooner Nikko Smith, son of Hall of Fame baseball player Ozzie Smith. "Being around my dad and him being in the spotlight kind of prepares you and you have an outlook on things that's a little bit different, because you've been around celebrities and people in the spotlight," Nikko told MTV News in 2007.

But perhaps the biggest jock descendant to make it to the "Idol" stage is Jordin Sparks, the season-six winner whose father is former NFL cornerback Phillippi Sparks. The year she won "Idol," Jordin recalled to MTV News taking pictures with her family for national magazines and seeing fans swarm her dad for autographs. "He actually told me the other day that when he would sign autographs, I would just be watching so intently," she remembered. "He said it was really weird, because he was watching me [sign autographs] the other day, and now it's all turned around."

It also helps to have some music-industry blood pumping through your veins. In season eight, that meant some extra shine for David Osmond, who made it to Hollywood Week that year thanks to his famous singing family's pedigree and some very smooth vocals but flamed out due to laryngitis. Season-six contestant Sundance Head, son of "Treat Her Right" singer Roy Head, ended up in 13th place on the show.

Before he surprised the political world by winning late Democratic stalwart Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in 2010, Republican lawmaker Scott Brown's basketball-playing daughter Ayla made it into the top 16 on the show in season five.

PARK CITY, Utah — Bingham Ray, a champion of independent filmmaking, died on Monday (January 23) near Park City, Utah, the Sundance Institute has announced.

Ray, 57, was the co-founder of October Films and the executive director of the San Francisco Film Society. He suffered a stroke during the Sundance Film Festival last week and was initially hospitalized in Park City. Following a second stroke, Ray was transferred to Provo, where he later died.

"It is with great sadness that the Sundance Institute acknowledges the passing of Bingham Ray, cherished independent film executive and most recently Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society," reads a statement posted on Deadline. "On behalf of the independent film community in Park City for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and elsewhere, we offer our support and condolences to his family. Bingham's many contributions to this community and business are indelible, and his legacy will not be soon forgotten."

"The board of directors and staff of the Film Society are stunned and deeply saddened by the untimely death of our executive director Bingham Ray," said Pat McBaine, board president of the San Francisco Film Society. "We at the Film Society and the entire film community have lost far too early an energetic and visionary impact player who has helped shape the independent film industry for decades in so many important and valuable ways."

Ray is perhaps best known as the co-founder of October Films, the 1990s-era independent film production company and distributor responsible for movies such as "Secrets and Lies," "Lost Highway" and "Cherry Falls." October was later acquired by Universal Pictures and renamed USA Films, which itself became the basis of Focus Features, Universal's art house arm that counts "In Bruges" and "Milk" among its many credits.

The San Francisco Film Society named Ray as executive director in November 2011 after the death of the SFFS' director Graham Leggat this past August.

Oscar 2012 Predictions: Best Actor

'Descendants' star George Clooney and 'Artist' actor Jean Dujardin are two of MTV News' nominee picks.
By Josh Wigler

In less than 24 hours, five actors will find themselves officially locked in on the road toward Oscar glory. The 2012 Academy Award nominations are set to be unleashed on Tuesday, and while there are certainly some expected front-runners who will be in the mix, there are always surprise nominees who make the cut.

In the Best Actor category, however, things seem a bit more predictable this year. A handful of performers have found their names repeatedly honored with nominations throughout the current awards season and the trend isn't likely to stop before Oscar night.

From bureaus to baseball, from silence to sex, here are our predictions for the Academy Awards' Best Actor nominees.

George Clooney, "The Descendants"
Already familiar with the taste of Oscar gold, Clooney is very likely on the cusp of another major win for his touching turn as "back-up parent" Matt King in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants." Clooney has been on an Academy-attracting hot streak in recent years, what with nominations for "Michael Clayton" and "Up in the Air." Under the right circumstances, he could have easily claimed victories for either of those roles. Will he find himself in the right crowd this time around?

Leonardo DiCaprio, "J. Edgar"
Critics were not kind to director Clint Eastwood's biopic about the Federal Bureau of Investigation's polarizing founder. But DiCaprio's performance as the titular J. Edgar Hoover is another story. The three-time Oscar nominee turned in a transformative performance as Hoover, both physically and spiritually, and is likely to be recognized with a fourth nomination, if not a win.

Jean Dujardin, "The Artist"
It's said that silence is acceptance. If that's the case, French actor Jean Dujardin could well be accepting a Best Actor award on Oscar night. As the star of director Michel Hazanavicius' silent film "The Artist," Dujardin proved the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words — in his case, moving pictures — as he stole the hearts of art-house moviegoers everywhere as George Valentin, a silent-movie actor facing the very real threat of falling from stardom to redundancy.

Michael Fassbender, "Shame"
Talk about baring it all! Fassbender truly shed every layer possible — and we do mean every layer — as sex addict Brandon Sullivan in director Steve McQueen's "Shame." It's not easy for the star of an NC-17 film to cross over to the awards-season elite, but Fassbender has done exactly that, most notably with his Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. While he's not likely to win — a true shame, if you ask us — his inclusion on Oscar night feels like the climax, if you will, of the Irish-German actor's truly inspired 2011.

Brad Pitt, "Moneyball"
After the shutdown of Steven Soderbegh's take on the material, a rewrite from Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and the surprise hiring of Jonah Hill in his first dramatic role, "Moneyball" surprised everybody by simply existing. Unsurprising is the fantastic performance from Pitt, one of our most gifted (and gorgeous) actors. Pitt has yet to bring an Oscar home, despite numerous nominations over the years. His Billy Beane might be the most understated of all the characters likely to enter the Best Actor field this year, but true to the Oakland A's general manager's philosophy, it's not always a grand slam that gets you the win.

'Breaking Bad' Star Aaron Paul: 'I Know How It Ends'

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 02:21 AM PST

'It's going to be pretty intense,' he promises MTV News at Sundance about the 'Bad' finale.

By now, "Breaking Bad" fans are well aware that Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is the danger. He blew the face off of an ingenious criminal drug lord in a dramatic seasons-long showdown. He secretly poisoned a little boy as a means to manipulating his on-again off-again business partner into helping him kill said drug lord. Ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake: four seasons deep, Walt has finally broken bad.

With only one season remaining before "Breaking Bad" closes the meth lab for good, it's anybody's guess how the saga of the cancer-stricken chemistry teacher-turned-murderous meth manufacturer will ultimately resolve itself. But there is one person who claims to know how the AMC drug thriller ends: Aaron Paul, the anything-but-"Bad" actor who stars on the show as reluctant drug slinger Jesse Pinkman.

"I know how it ends," Paul told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he's promoting the release of his new movie "Smashed." You wouldn't think Paul would spill any further details, but he proceeded to drop a bombshell bigger than the one that took out Gus Fring.

"Jesse dies," he deadpanned.

And just like Fring, our jaws dropped to the floor at the stunning revelation. But true to Pinkman's prankster ways, Paul immediately cracked up and cleared the air.

"No, no, no! He doesn't die! Or maybe he does," he continued ominously. "I don't know! Actually, I have no idea what's going to happen. But I'm excited to see [it play out]."

No matter how "Breaking Bad" reaches its conclusion, it will all come to an end one way or the other, sooner rather than later.

"[There are only] 16 more episodes, and then we're done," Paul said. "We start shooting at the end of March. I think it's going to be a full sprint to the finish, and it's going to be pretty intense."

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance.

Kanye West Takes Heat For Australian Festival Delay

Fellow performers Soundgarden criticize West after his soundcheck bleeds into their set at Sunday's Big Day Out festival.
By James Montgomery

It wasn't a delay on par with his 2008 Bonnaroo debacle — when he took the stage at roughly 4:30 a.m. (and then nearly destroyed his MacBook Air in the aftermath) — but at Sunday's Big Day Out festival in Australia, Kanye West was nearly 45 minutes late for his headlining slot. And, as you can imagine, folks weren't thrilled to be kept waiting.

According to reports, fans bided their time by breaking into numerous chants of "bullsh--" as they stood in the rain, and when West finally did appear, many wandered off to watch other acts like Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and My Chemical Romance. The Gold Coast Bulletin wrote that West blamed the delay on "sound problems" caused by the wet weather.

While those chants were no doubt withering, West did manage to rebound and wow fans with a booming, ballerina-enhanced set. Unfortunately, he couldn't impress fellow headliners Soundgarden, who were apparently less than pleased that his soundcheck bled into their set.

"Sounds like there's children playing music there, retarded children, retarded as in 'held back,' " frontman Chris Cornell told the crowd, after West's music was heard in between the band's songs. "There's no other word for it."

A spokesperson for Soundgarden did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter by press time. Aside from the acrimony, weather and delays, several Australian newspapers noted that the West-headlined Big Day Out Gold Coast did not sell out — the first time the fest had not been at capacity "since the 1990s." Many attributed that to the fact that Kanye had also headlined Australia's Splendor in the Grass fest less than six months ago.

Daniel Radcliffe's Next Role Is Poet Allen Ginsberg

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 12:56 AM PST

'I'm hoping to make this year just about film, film, film,' 'Woman in Black' star tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Daniel Radcliffe

While we are still anxiously awaiting the release of "The Woman in Black," Daniel Radcliffe's first big post-"Harry Potter" film, it's never too early to start thinking about what other projects the young superstar will be considering after "Black" opens.

When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe recently, we asked him to give us some clues as to what we might expect from him in the next year, specifically whether he'd officially signed on to a new film following the release of "Black."

"Closer and getting closer every day, but not anything confirmed yet, unfortunately," Radcliffe said of his 2012 working schedule and several film roles he's considering. "Hopefully I'll definitely have three weeks off in February and then shortly after that, I would hopefully be making a film and it would hopefully be over here," he said of his wishes to continue working Stateside, following his run on Broadway in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

"That would be an entirely new experience for me; I've never filmed in America. I'd really like to do that, with an American crew and have that experience," he said. "I'm hoping to make this year just about film, film, film and then maybe get back onstage maybe in the next two years."

While he was cagey about exactly which films he's considering, one Radcliffe role MTV News can now confirm is poet Allen Ginsberg in the independent film "Kill Your Darlings," which is about how Ginsberg and fellow Beat Generation icons Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met.

"It's one of the things that's on the table absolutely. It would be amazing and I'm very, very enthused for that script and that young director," he said of the John Krokidas-helmed project, which is also set to star Elizabeth Olsen, who recently raved about Radcliffe's talent and her excitement to work with him in "Darlings." "It's an independent film, it's welcome to the world of independent film — from one day to the next it could happen or not happen. Until I'm there on the set, I'm not going to say anything about it."

Would Daniel Radcliffe do well in the role of Allen Ginsberg? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Kristin Cavallari: From 'Laguna Beach' To Motherhood

Former 'Hills' star is expecting her first baby with fiancé Jay Cutler.

Kristin Cavallari is ready to be a mom. The former "Hills" star has confirmed that she's expecting her first child with her fiancé, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

The blond bombshell has kept us interested from the moment she made her small-screen debut on "Laguna Beach" right through her stint on "The Hills," when she filled the void left vacant by onetime adversary Lauren Conrad.

"Honestly, I think it's fun to play the bad girl, and no one remembers the nice girl, you know?" Cavallari once told MTV News about her roles on some of MTV's most beloved reality shows. And, looking back on her time on those shows, it's not hard to see that she had a lot of fun stirring the pot.

When Cavallari launched her TV career in 2004 as one of the main ladies of "Laguna," she became an instant star, and fans were totally intrigued by her ongoing love triangle with Conrad and Stephen Colletti. In her two seasons on the show, she made a name for herself thanks to her outspoken, larger-than-life personality.

After she left the show in 2005, Cavallari's biggest fans had to wait a good four years before she made her return to MTV. She teased her arrival at Heidi and Spencer's wedding in 2009, just as LC was leaving the show, and from there, she quickly had everyone wondering what she had up her sleeve.

"I think my biggest thing was the first episode, where I really came in with a bang," Cavallari told MTV News, recalling her rooftop fight with Audrina Patridge over Justin Bobby during her "Hills" debut. "It was like, 'All right, clearly I'm back.' "

On top of her Justin Bobby drama with Audrina, Cavallari also teased the cameras about rekindling a romance with ex-boyfriend Brody Jenner — another man she had in common with Conrad. Regardless of all that drama, one hookup is still her most embarrassing.

"I think that's sort of my I-wish-I-didn't moment, was when I made out with Stacie in Vegas," Cavallari said of some girl-on-girl action that made family dinners a little uncomfortable. "That was one episode I had to call my dad and say, 'Dad, sorry — this is going to be your least favorite episode.' "

As "The Hills" wrapped up in July 2010, Cavallari reflected on the franchise and the series' mindboggling end, which may go down as her most memorable moment to date. The finale broke with convention when it dropped the "fourth wall" to show the entire crew on a studio lot as Cavallari pulled away from Brody to head off to Europe.

"I mean, I think we both couldn't have been happier with the ending. We were speechless," she recalled at the time. "I think it's sad to see something that was so great, to see it come to an end is always bittersweet. But I think they had a great run. They went on for so long, and I think it's nice they wrapped up everybody's story and it's a happy ending."

Leave your well-wishes for Kristin as she embarks on her next happy ending!

'Dark Knight Rises': Who Is Miranda Tate?

We discuss just whom Marion Cotillard is playing in The Weekly Rising.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The topic of this week's column might be considered a spoiler. Admittedly, it's probably the spoiler that most fans already know about, but if you wish to remain uninformed, I suggest you stop reading.

Over the next two weeks, we'll be discussing the two "Dark Knight Rises" characters that have stirred the most controversy, outside the hugely overblown debacle surrounding Bane's voice.

Almost as soon as Christopher Nolan cast Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, fans called "B.S." How could a series with such a storied history for casting great actors as classic characters put Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt in made-up roles like Miranda Tate and John Blake?

The answer is, Nolan wouldn't. Fans saw through the ruse immediately, pointed at Cotillard and cried "Talia al Ghul."

With so much talk swirling around "The Dark Knight Rises" in the early months of its development and confirmation that it would circle back to touch on some themes from "Batman Begins," Talia seemed like a choice candidate for a secondary "Rises" villain. By the time Joey King confirmed that she would be playing young Talia al Ghula, Tate's true identity was all but sealed.

But now we find ourselves in a curious position. With everything but an official press release telling us that Marion Cotillard will play Talia — picking up where her dear old dad, Ra's al Ghul, left off — how will that affect the overall arch of "Dark Knight Rises"? One of the most common complaints about "The Dark Knight" was Two-Face's uneven role. It was the Joker's movie, and many felt that adding such an iconic villain toward the end of the film didn't do the character justice.

Is Talia destined to become the next Two-Face? It all depends on when Miranda Tate's true identity is revealed. Such a high-profile comic book adaptation like "Dark Knight Rises" has to contend with different hazards than a normal film. The Tate/Talia twist could work in a film that didn't feature such well-known characters. Instead, fans have a whole universe of potential true identities to assign if they feel a character is lying, which they did with Tate.

For the reveal to not fall absolutely flat, Nolan would have to introduce the truth in a way that's less "A-ha! I got you!" and more a natural progression of the story line. A spoiler of this caliber does the least amount of damage when less of the plot depends on its shock value. Attempting to make the Talia reveal a big shocker would feel would be a fool's errand at this juncture.

How Talia will fit into "The Dark Knight Rises" also relies heavily on Bane's final role in the film. The prologue strongly hinted at the presence of a renewed League of Shadows with Bane taking the lead. That still leaves a lot of room for a leader above him, the one giving the orders. This is where Talia is most likely to fit in. So much of what we've seen of the film so far focuses on Bane and his role, but many of the shots come from just a few scenes. The trailer only gave the illusion of showing us a lot. That leaves the majority of the film unseen, and plenty of screen time left for Talia.

On that note, even if Cotillard does end up portraying Talia, it really doesn't spoil all that much. A character's identity will never be a focal point of a story. Nolan is too intelligent of a storyteller to waste his final act on a plot development that people guessed a year out. Nothing that this column or any spoiler sites have uncovered has been essential enough to lessen "The Dark Knight Rises" as a movie. Did knowing about Dent's Two-Face transformation in "The Dark Knight" ruin that movie? No. Expect the same with Talia.
