Jay-Z Takes On Fatherhood: From 'Glory' To 'Can't Be Life'

Jay has been rapping about becoming a dad since his debut album — MTV News examines some key lyrics.

Jay-Z is finally a father. After welcoming a baby girl with wife Beyoncé over the weekend in New York City, the Brooklyn MC dropped "Glory," a track honoring his firstborn on Monday (January 9). But for those who've listened closely to his catalog, it's a moment he's pondered lyrically for much of his career, starting with his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt.

But the Doubt track is a far cry from last year's Watch the Throne track with Kanye West, where Jay so lovingly mapped out his daddy blueprint. In fact, on Hov's first LP, he seemed to think having a kid was a liability for a hustler. Now that the arrival of Blue Ivy Carter has truly made Jigga a big poppa, MTV News takes a close look at Jay-Z's key fatherhood-inspired lyrics.

"D'Evils" (1996)
Key lyric: Thinkin' back to when we first learned to use rubbers/ He never learned, so in turn I'm kidnapping his baby's mother.

On the second verse of "D' Evils," a sinister Jigga kidnaps the mother of a former friend's baby and then ridicules the poor sap for never learning to use "rubbers." In his 2010 book "Decoded," Jay explained that the fact that his ex-friend never used contraception "sets him up as someone sloppier, less calculating and cunning than me." It may sound negative now, but the lyric is indicative of what Jay represented at the time.

"Lucky Me" (1997)
Key lyric: I hate all girls with ulterior motives/ That's why I'm 20-plus years old, no sons, no daughters.

On his second album, 1997's In My Lifetime Vol. 1, Shawn Carter emerges as a father figure of sorts with the sarcastically titled "Lucky Me." He raps about praying that none of his nephews want to be stars. Furthermore, Hova reveals that his distrust of women has kept him from even considering fatherhood. Choosing the right mother was a factor: "Don't plan to leave without a fight or plant a seed, I'd give life/ Though I can't see past a girl's greed to call her wife," he raps. Luckily he waited for eventual wife Beyoncé, and we couldn't think of a better match!

"Anything" (2000)
Key lyric: Dear nephews, I'm writing this with no pen or a pad/ And I'm signing it, ya uncle, ya best friend and ya dad.

Jay-Z's has consistently rapped about his love for his nephews, and in 2000, Jay took his sister's kids (and godchildren) under his platinum wing in song. On "Anything," Hov makes a loving pledge to be there for all of the kids in his life, though they weren't technically his own.

Amil's "4 da Fam" (2000)
Key lyric: I got four nephews and they're all writing ... and I'm having a child, which is more frightening.

It seems that Jay has always yearned to be a dad. While he has remained tight-lipped about his private life in interviews, he has on a few occasions rhymed that he was expecting. The child that Hov was anticipating on "4 da Fam" was most likely lost through miscarriage, though no official word was ever given. Whatever the case, it was clear that Jigga was softening the position he took on Reasonable Doubt.

"This Can't be Life" (2000)
Key lyric: It gets worse, baby momma water burst/ Baby came out stillborn, still I gotta move on.

Many fans assumed that on the Kanye West-produced "This Can't be Life," Jay was rapping about the same child he referenced on Amil's "4 da Fam" just months earlier. Not the case. In "Decoded," Jay clarifies that on the heart-wrenching cut from his Roc La Familia album he was painting a picture from 1994. "My girl of five years got pregnant and lost the baby in a miscarriage," he wrote. Though tragic, the circumstances surrounding those lines show that the concept of fatherhood wasn't new to Hov.

"Where Have You Been" (2000)
Key lyric: I would say, "My daddy loves me and he'll never go away"/ Bullsh--, do you even remember December's my birthday?

Referencing his own absentee father, Hov vows to turn a negative into a positive on "New Day" when he spits, "Promise to never leave him, even if his mama tweakin'/ 'Cause my dad left me and I promised never repeat him." Jay did forgive his dad before he died, a fact he detailed in rhyme on "Moment of Clarity" from 2003's The Black Album, but the origin of his pain was famously laid out on the gut-wrenching "Where Have You Been."

"Lost One" (2006)
Key lyric: Can't wait for your child's life to be a part of it/ So now I'm child-like, waiting for a gift.

Jay-Z's love for his nieces, nephews and godchildren was never a secret, and when his sister's son Colleek Lukie died tragically in a car accident in 2005, Hov was hit particularly hard. Lukie was driving the Chrysler that Uncle Jay had given him as a graduation present. Making matters worse was that Luckie and his girlfriend were expecting a child of their own at the time of his death. Jay found solace, he raps, by awaiting the blessed event.

"Hello Brooklyn 2.0" (2007)
Key lyric: Hello, Brooklyn, if we had a daughter/ Guess what I'mma call her? Brooklyn Carter.

Every artist deserves creative freedom, but it seems B might not have been onboard for Jay's initial baby name pick, as they went with Blue over Brooklyn.

The Throne's "New Day" (2011)
Key lyric: Sorry, Junior, i already ruined ya/ 'Cause you ain't even alive, paparazzi pursuin' ya.

It's true. From the moment B rubbed her belly in the paparazzi pit on the black carpet of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, it was on! Granted, the media frenzy surrounding the couple's first child creates an uncomfortable situation for the new parents, but from a fan's perspective, longtime listeners now get to watch their two favorite artists take a new step in life — and live vicariously through that. Since Reasonable Doubt we have seen Jay-Z grow from a young hustler to a mature mogul. His evolution is one of music's greatest stories and while Hov remains private (and understandably so), through his music we have seen snap shots of his hopes, desires and dreams.

"Glory" (2012)
Key lyric: The most amazing feeling I feel/ Words can't describe the feeling, for real/ Baby, I'll paint the sky blue/ My greatest creation was you.

What better way to celebrate life than through song? Days after baby Blue came into the world, Jay recorded his most personal thoughts, releasing "Glory" on his Life and Times site. Hov really opens up on the Pharrell-produced track, and then tops things off by adding the crying and cooing bundle of joy to the track, effectively giving baby girl her very first feature. "You're my child with the child from Destiny's Child/ That's a hell of a recipe," Hov lovingly spits.

Share your congratulations for Beyoncé and Jay-Z on our Facebook page!

Drake's Take Care: Making The Album, Track By Track

Producer Noah '40' Shebib gives MTV News the inside story in an exclusive interview.

Despite all the critical and commercial acclaim Drake's Take Care has rightly earned, the Toronto MC has remained relatively quiet when promoting the album. Relative in the sense that Thank Me Later's release was accompanied by the hoopla of in-store signings and a documentary.

That's not the only way the two projects differ. Where TML featured a number of A-list hitmakers, from Kanye West to Swizz Beatz, the biggest name in Drake's sophomore effort's production credits is Just Blaze. The album certainly doesn't suffer from that lack of notoriety, however. In fact, it sounds more focused with the lesser-known T-Minus, and Drake's right-hand man Noah "40" Shebib stealing the show. Their efforts helped to make it more Drake's album — however introspective, weird and altogether refreshing that might be.

When MTV News caught up with 40, he attributed their creative fearlessness to the autonomy Lil Wayne and Cash Money allowed them.

"We're afforded all of the creative freedom in the world," 40 explained. "They really trust us and have from day one. It's a great feeling to know that me and Drake just get to make music. We don't really have to clear it with A&Rs or anybody. We are our own A&R's. We just make it happen, and we take it, say, 'Hey, look, this is what we did. Let's put it out.' "

40 gave MTV News the inside look at the making of many Take Care songs, including those that shows us another side of Weezy:

"HYFR" (produced by T-Minus) "He trusts us enough to take chances; he'll go there with his raps. Not just getting on the song, but he'll participate [in the song's theme]. On 'HYFR,' he'll show that introspective side of himself along with Drake. That's amazing, and those are some of Wayne's illest moments, always have been for him.

"The Real Her" (produced by 40 and Drake) "Even on 'The Real Her,' a lot of people will be like, 'Nah, nah, I can't get on that sh--,' but Wayne will be like, 'F--- that. ... I'm going to get on that sh--.' ... I like it.' And that's what it is to me. You have to make music with that attitude. We love the music we make."

"Take Care" (produced by Jamie xx and 40) "We've always been a fan of Jamie as well as the xx, and we had been to their studio and sat with them prior to this when we were in London last year. We had loved that Gil-Scott [Heron] record, and the remix Jamie had done, and I guess between Oliver and Drake and myself, but specifically Oliver and Drake felt that song never got its shine. 'Man, what a great record. It never was as big as it should've or could've been.' "

"Motto" (produced by T-Minus) "That song was right at the end of the process. That's one of my favorites. T[-Minus] sent the record to Drake. I think Drake cut it in Vegas, maybe. He cut the vocals, sent it over to me, I gave it to Gadget, Gadget mixed it, sent it to mastering the next morning and got it mastered, on radio 24 hours later."

"Headlines" (produced by Boi-1da and 40) "There's a couple of things about radio. That's a catchy song. 'They know, they know, they know.' It's corny, it's catchy, it's perfect. That will run on radio all day. You balance with those evils when you make music. I understand what's going to work on radio as much, sometimes I want to make different types of music. But the thing is, you want to win. You want to have your cake and eat it too."

"Crew Love" (produced by 40, the Weeknd and Illangelo) " 'Crew Love' is just a moment for Drake as far at the content of the record and what was going on around him in life and his people and his team. That was just an important record for him to make, and Weeknd was someone he wanted to include on that."

"The Ride" (produced by Doc McKinney and the Weeknd) "Was really just a vibe. It was a vibe that the Weeknd caught, and it was just so crazy that Drake wanted to rap on it — as simply put as that."

"Underground Kings" (produced by T-Minus and 40) "Sometimes, Drake will have a song title in his head or an idea of what the record is and what he wants it to be and then he'll search for the beat, and I think he found that beat from T-Minus. It was just a matter of finding a place for the chorus. We got the mix right and the bass sort of eating up any speaker that gets in the way of it."

"Marvin's Room" (produced by 40) "The honesty is mind blowing. He says things in that record that are like, 'Whoa, really?' But that's shock value, and that's a great thing to bring to the table. The further it goes, the bigger the smile on my face. I want him to say the craziest sh-- you can imagine."

"Buried Alive" (produced 40 and Supa Dups) "I had given it to Drake at some point, because he had asked for it or wanted it. He just sent it to Kendrick [Lamar] at some point. I had no idea. A few days later, he was like, 'I got this Kendrick verse!' 'On what?' 'On the beat you did!' 'What beat?' When we listened to it, we loved it."

All week, we'll bring you highlights from our candid interview with Drake producer Noah "40" Shebib. Be sure to keep it locked here as 40 talks Take Care and his thoughts on everything from working with Lil Wayne to Drizzy's next single with Rihanna. Blue Ivy Carter: Destiny's Child

An open letter to Jay-Z and Beyoncé's brand-new baby girl, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Dear Blue Ivy Carter (or whatever your name ends up being),

Hi, welcome to the world! We've never actually met, though I did say hello to your dad at that Grizzly Bear show a couple years ago (he kind of nodded back to me), and one time I was in the same room as your mom, so I feel like I'm in a pretty good position to be speaking directly to you right now.

Anyway, you are just a few days old and, as such, probably not all that familiar with the way things work, but I figured I'd let you in on a little secret: You are very famous, and you are probably always going to be. Shoot, you've already landed your first feature, and it's better than anything Lourdes Leon has ever done. You are the First Daughter of Hip Hop, not to mention the actual Destiny's Child. And given all that, you childhood is going to be a little unorthodox: You will undoubtedly be the subject of creepy fashion spreads in gossip mags (just ask Suri) and you will definitely never get to go to a Chuck E. Cheese or anything. Sorry in advance. But honestly, Chuck E. Cheese isn't that great anyway. You're not missing much.

On the flipside, being famous is really, really great. You will get to go to any preschool your little heart desires, you can have anything you want for lunch and you could probably play point guard for the Nets once Deron Williams leaves. I can't even begin to imagine what your first birthday party will be like, but I hope I'm invited to it. You will be afforded the kinds of opportunities we mere mortals can only dream of; yours will be a life unlike most. It goes hand-in-hand with being a celebrity at age zero — sure, you'll probably be assigned a security detail as soon as you're able to walk, but, really, it's a small price to pay for the unlimited possibilities of fame.

But here's the thing: I hope you never actually act like you're famous. You are, despite all evidence to the contrary, just another human being. No more, no less. As you get older, try to follow Louis C.K.'s advice: Don't be an a--hole. A lot of this will be up to your parents, which is a good thing, since they seem to be two of the more grounded folks on the planet, despite being multimillionaires who own part of an NBA franchise. They certainly know the value of hard work (maybe don't ask your dad about said "hard work" in his early days, though), and neither of them has ever forgotten where they came from. Which is why you should probably listen to them, no matter what — even if they refuse to let you rent out Privé for your first ballet recital. Trust me, it's for your own good.

Because, really, I hope you grow up to be your own person, that you follow your own muse and be happy and well-adjusted. You don't even have to be a celebrity; you could be a teacher or a scientist or a social worker. In fact, maybe you should — they're all more honorable professions. But if you want to follow in your parents' footsteps, that's fine too; I just hope that when I'm 50 and interview you on some red carpet, I will be relieved to discover that you are a very nice person. I have a feeling you probably will be. You have good role models in that regard. Oh, and please tell your mom and dad congratulations for me.

So good luck with your life. It's going to be a wild, wonderful thing. I look forward to seeing how you turn out, and I get the feeling I'm not the only one. I know you've got a busy sleeping/eating schedule ahead of you, so I'll let you get back to it. But before I go, let me leave you with one last piece of advice: Whatever you do, try not to listen to Uncle Kanye. That guy's nuts.

Sincerely,
James

Taylor Kitsch Talks 'All-Or-Nothing' 2012

Roles in 'Battleship,' 'John Carter' and 'Savages' make the 'Friday Night Lights' alum one to watch in 2012.

Kids are growing up fast these days. One day, they're playing fullback for the Dillon Panthers. Next thing you know, they're saving Mars, selling weed and fighting aliens on a battleship.

For Taylor Kitsch, 2012 is the year he grows up. A fan favorite from the "Friday Night Lights" television show, Kitsch makes the transition to full-on action star with "John Carter" and "Battleship." If that weren't enough, later in the year, he'll star in "Savages," a crime film helmed by one of Hollywood's most formidable directors, Oliver Stone.

And Kitsch knows exactly what he's getting into: "It's a pretty all-or-nothing year, right?"

"All-or-nothing" is about as close as you can get to properly describing the year Kitsch has in front of him. Aside from starring in "FNL" creator Peter Berg's next film, "Battleship," Kitsch is smack-dab in the middle of Disney's big-budget sci-fi epic "John Carter." When it comes down to it, the fate of "John Carter" may rest firmly on Kitsch's abs.

"Of course, there's the physicality," said Kitsch, explaining his revealing wardrobe, comprised mostly of a glorified loincloth. "You're pretty out there, not going to lie." Kitsch insisted that the fashion choices never bothered him because it was true to the character. "It felt right, so it wasn't such a big deal," he said.

Despite the film's special effects and high budget, Kitsch said there is something much deeper to this story of a transported Civil War captain. "There's kind of that stigma with big movies that it's just action," Kitsch said. "But with this, it's really just the core of this guy and his journey of reinventing himself and finding himself again."

With such a full plate, Kitsch said he feels a whole mix of emotions, both good and bad. "I think it's a bit of everything," he said. "I'm excited. I'm nervous, but I'm also super proud of it, and I can't wait to show. Especially from 'John Carter' to 'Battleship' to 'Savages,' that's such a different landscape of a character."

It's not just you, Taylor. We're excited too.

What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It's time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

Lindsay Lohan In Talks To Play Elizabeth Taylor In TV Movie

'Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story' will follow Taylor's epic romance with fellow superstar Richard Burton.
By Kara Warner

Nine days into the new year, and we already have our first surprising Lindsay Lohan story. The recent Playboy cover girl's next role might be that of Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor in a made-for-TV-movie for Lifetime.

According to Deadline, Lohan is in very early talks to play the lead role in Lifetime's original movie "Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story." The TV movie, which was announced at the network's upfront presentation to advertisers in May 2011, will be a biopic and will reportedly revolve around the epic romance between movie icons Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, whose tempestuous relationship was the most infamous celebrity love affair of its day. In a nutshell, Taylor and Burton were the original "Brangelina."

Lohan's potential involvement would definitely elevate interest in the project, no matter the production or air date. The problem-plagued 25-year-old could use something positive in her professional career, since the last time we heard from Lohan was via her Playboy interview and court hearings that led to 30 days in jail for violating probation, not attending court-mandated therapy sessions and getting tossed from a community-service gig.

Lohan seems to have a thing for misunderstood, old-school Hollywood icons, given the Marilyn Monroe theme in her Playboy spread and her onetime involvement in a Linda Lovelace biopic. Furthermore, Lohan and Taylor have a few interesting things in common, according to a 2010 article from Slate. "Both had domineering stage mothers, little semblance of a real childhood, fame from a young age, substance abuse issues, public emotional outpourings, and copious amounts of tabloid drama," wrote Slate senior editor Jessica Grose. "The key difference, though, is that Elizabeth Taylor had a true record of achievement before she became the most notorious movie star in America. She had made almost 30 movies by the time she and Burton were making headlines."

There has been no official comment from Lohan or Lifetime yet.

For a while, it was a running joke between Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss that the "Harry Potter" star and "A Very Potter Musical" star had yet to meet, even though the two shared a "Potter" connection, celebrity status and Criss succeeded Radcliffe in the hit Broadway revival of "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying."

MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe, and he revealed that, at long last, the two actors finally met just before Criss took over Radcliffe's role for a limited run.

"We have met. I can confirm, we have met," Radcliffe said with a smile. "Somebody showed me a very doctored photograph of our meeting; there were no photographs at our meeting, so if that's what people are interested in, they're going to be disappointed.

"But no, I had a lovely chat with him, talked about the show, I don't really deign to give advice, but I gave him my number and same with Nick Jonas and said, you know, 'Contact me if you've got anything to ask. I'm always around.' I passed on a joke to him that Matthew Broderick gave to me which Robert Morse gave to Matthew Broderick," Radcliffe explained of an inside joke shared by Morse and Broderick, who also played the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in "How to Succeed." "So that's become sort of a legacy joke now, which is nice."

Criss will only be in the show for three weeks until he has to return to work on "Glee," after which Jonas will take over January 24 through July 1.

New York's Lenox Hill Hospital releases a statement denying reports that the couple rented an entire maternity floor.

Despite the many rumors about the lengths Beyoncé and Jay-Z went to for security and secrecy around the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter, New York hospital Lenox Hill says the superstar couple was treated with just as much care as all their patients.

In a statement released Monday (January 9), hospital spokesman Frank Danza said he was "troubled by the misinformation being circulated in some news media reports" and denied the rumor that Bey and Jay paid more than $1 million to rent a floor of the hospital for the birth.

"The suggestion that the couple paid $1.3 million to rent an entire maternity floor is simply not true. The family is housed in an executive suite at the hospital and is being billed the standard rate for those accommodations," Danza said in the statement. "Our executive suites are available for any patient, including the food service and amenities provided to the Carter family."

Speaking to the concerns over beefed-up security and whether the celebrity baby disturbed other patients, Danza insisted that although Beyoncé and Jay-Z had personal bodyguards, the hospital maintained control over the situation.

"We have made every effort to ensure minimal disruption to other families experiencing the births of their own children over the past three days. No security plan that we or the Carters' security team put in place would have prevented or delayed families from gaining access to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Danza continued in the statement. "Lenox Hill Hospital takes patient privacy and safety very seriously. And while we congratulate the Carter family on the birth of their child, we value the loyalty of ALL our patients and always strive to ensure a positive experience, knowing that the birth of a child is a wonderful moment producing memories of a lifetime."

While the baby was reportedly born late Saturday night, the couple just released an official birth announcement Monday. "Hello Hello Baby Blue," the Carters said in a statement to MTV News. "We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful, we are in heaven. She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 lbs and it was the best experience of both of our lives."

New Hampshire Primary A 'Family Affair' For Jon Huntsman's Kids

'He brings a lot to this table,' Abby Huntsman tells MTV News of their dad, a Republican presidential hopeful.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Life on the campaign trail has often been compared to "Groundhog Day." Another town, another local deep-fried delicacy (or 20), another 10 stump speeches and endless rounds of hand-shaking, radio interviews and posed pictures.

But when your dad is running for president and he gives you the green light to be yourself with the press and tweet and YouTube (just about) anything you want to, well, things get a lot more interesting.

"It's been crazy. It's been so fun — a family affair," said Abby Huntsman, 25, who along with sisters Mary Anne, 26, and Liddy, 24, has been out on the road for months with former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman as he tries to break into the top tier of Republican White House aspirants. The trio have already created some of the most lighthearted, virally hilarious moments in an otherwise smash-mouth primary campaign with their YouTube send-ups of Herman Cain campaign commercials and Justin Timberlake songs, as well as a popular Twitter feed that is much looser than the usual sanitized candidate-kid offering.

"We call it a roller coaster — you never know which way the car is going to go," she said, noting that as of Monday afternoon (January 9), it felt like that direction was up, as their father's poll numbers were inching north into double digits as he made a bid for third place in the Granite State. After skipping last week's first-in-the-nation caucus in Iowa, the former Obama administration ambassador to China had pinned his hopes on a strong showing in New Hampshire.

And when it comes to young voters, Huntsman likely has the sibling trio to thank for his popularity, due to the maverick decision to loosen up the normally short leash candidate offspring are typically kept on. "We cut that leash day one," said Liddy, the unofficial wild child of the bunch. An avowed hip-hop fan and music junkie who used to hide CDs with explicit lyric stickers under her bed in seventh grade — until her dad found them and broke them in half — Liddy said reaching out to her peers using online media was the plan from the beginning.

"We think [social media] is crucially important for this election cycle, especially for our younger generation, so we've kind of run with it." For the most part, Dad's been OK with their online escapades — well, except for a few things Liddy wanted to release that Mary Anne said their candidad put the kibosh on.

Among their favorite stories is how a young Jon Huntsman dropped out of high school to join a rock band but clearly didn't succeed at that venture. "So he's running for the next best job, which is president," Liddy joked.

Music is still important to the Huntsmans. Mary Anne is a classically trained concert pianist who loves Chopin; Dad is a Ben Folds Five fan; and the ladies were blown away when they recently watched Florence and the Machine on "Saturday Night Live." Yes, they're fun and they have a blast trying to engage their peers with clever tweets and videos, but the ladies also have a job to do. So they make sure to expertly tout their dad's experience as a job-creating governor and an ambassador. "He brings a lot to this table ... he also unites this country [and believes] we should all serve our country when asked, and that comes before party — country first," Abby said.

MTV News' Sway was so impressed with their poise, in fact, he asked if any of the next-generation Huntsmans were thinking of a career in politics. "I'll save America the grief and I will stick to what I'm doing and not do politics," laughed Liddy, motioning to Abby as the likely next woman up. "No ... ask us when this is over," she demurred.

'Caged' Star Wes Calls Cage Fighting 'An Escape'

'You're going to see a part of me that I don't ever tell anybody,' Wes says of new docu-series, which premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

"Everybody needs that one thing that they can go do just to take their mind off everyday life." For Wes, who lives in the small town of Minden, Louisiana, that one thing is cage fighting.

Wes is one of three young men featured in the new MTV docu-series "Caged." They're all amateur mixed martial arts fighters struggling to make something of themselves in less-than-ideal conditions.

Daniel, nicknamed "Golden Boy," grew up in a wealthy family but lost his way after the death of his girlfriend in a car accident. Matt, who goes by the name "Danger" in the cage, is a talented fighter who just wants to make his parents proud. And Wes struggles to balance his MMA ambitions with his responsibilities to ex-girlfriend Red and their newborn son.

"It's an escape from every day," Wes told MTV News via Skype. "You wake up and go to work, and then you've got to worry about bills and you've got to worry about this and you've got to worry about that. Well, when you're in the cage, all that's gone. You don't have to worry about anything, because you've got to worry about this guy that's about to try to kick your ass."

For the viewers of "Caged," Wes promises lots of excitement. "You're going to see fights — not only in the cage, but out of the cage — you're going to see people talking sh--, you're going to see jokes." And, of course, there will be drama. "I cried on a lot of the episodes that I watched, and I don't ever cry," he said. "You're going to see a part of me that I don't ever tell anybody."

Wes had a difficult childhood and took to boxing as an outlet when he was 13 years old. "Then I started training in mixed martial arts, and I loved it," he said. His hope for the series is very personal: "If people can look at my story and relate and say, 'Man, if he did it, then I can do it,' I think that would be awesome to inspire people."

"Caged" premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Jon Huntsman's Daughters Talk Music With Sway

Mary Anne, Abby and Liddy love everything from Rachmaninoff to the Roots, they tell MTV News in New Hampshire.
By Sway Calloway

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Just one day before the big primary here on Tuesday, I touched down in New Hampshire and had an interesting talk with Republican candidate Jon Huntsman's daughters.

Unlike some other political kids out there stumping for their candidate moms and dads, the former Utah governor has let his daughters — Mary Anne, 26; Abby, 25; and Liddy, 24 — be themselves on the campaign trail. That means they've been able to tweet (even a shout-out to me!) and post videos — including ones in which they made fun of a Herman Cain campaign clip and another in which they spoofed Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" — and talk about the kinds of things you don't normally hear from on-message political kids.

One of the most fascinating things I've found is that while their father is having the race of his life as a first-time presidential candidate and he needs to win this state or have a great showing, his daughters and I spent half our time talking about music they love. Liddy is a big fan of the Roots, which was one of the first groups she mentioned when I asked who she listens to.

I thought it was fascinating that she loves hip-hop. She also likes John Legend. Mary Anne is a classical pianist. Abby said they grew up listening to rock and roll. In fact, she said their dad was in a rock band when he was younger (and had long hair) and that if he'd made it as a musician, he might never have turned to politics.

Liddy also described the time when she was in seventh grade and hid some CDs under her bed that her dad might not have approved of. That is, until he found them and broke them in half. So even in the heart of politics, you can find music lovers.

With the world still buzzing over the birth of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's first child, the happy couple released an official birth announcement Monday (January 9).

"Hello Hello Baby Blue," the Carters said in a statement to MTV News. "We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012."

Since the baby's birth was first reported, late Saturday night, there was some confusion over her name. Some reported Ivy Blue Carter, but the couple's official announcement should clear up any lingering doubts.

The typically private B and Jay also provided some more intimate details surrounding the delivery of their bundle of joy. "Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful, we are in heaven. She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 lbs and it was the best experience of both of our lives," they wrote, putting to rest rumors of a scheduled C-section.

Baby Blue is just a few days old, but already the youngest Carter has made her musical debut on "Glory," a dedication track that Hov released Monday on his Life and Times blog. At the close of the Pharrell-produced song, Blue Ivy can be heard crying and cooing, riding alongside her multiplatinum poppa.

It's been a long road, which publicly began August 28 at the MTV Video Music Awards, when Bey revealed to the world that she was pregnant. There have been many well-wishes, much speculation and a ton of curiosity surrounding the birth of the couple's daughter. Now that Blue Ivy Carter is finally here, the Carters even took time to thank the fans.

"We are thankful to everyone for all your prayers, well wishes, love and support," they wrote.

Elizabeth Banks 'Nerds Out' Over 'Hunger Games'

'We're creating the Capitol in a real way for fans,' actress tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

We've been excited about Elizabeth Banks' role as type-A District 12 escort Effie Trinkett in "The Hunger Games" ever since it was announced. And given her impressive résumé and what we've seen from the early photos of the actress in costume, it seems that Banks is Effie Trinkett.

When MTV News caught up with Banks recently while she was promoting "Man On A Ledge," we asked her about that fancy makeup and her thoughts on Effie being the "official face" of the Capitol Colours nail line.

"It's weird because it's like, 'Is it real?' They are real nail colors, but this whole 'Capitol Colours' thing, I sort of love that we're creating the Capitol in a real way for fans," she said. "I am so nerded out on the whole thing. I'm just so excited about the whole thing and the image is really neat."

Banks went on to say that her time spent in the makeup chair wasn't that extensive, it's just the extreme detail on those fancy fake eyelashes that makes everything look so complicated.

"It was really fun, and the eyelashes, we were all so enamored with them, so I'm really glad there's a great still close-up of that because they actually feature a deer with antlers, and a butterfly has landed on the antler, so you need to look a little bit closer," she advised. "It's a full forest of creatures on my eyes!"

We asked Banks if she's been paying attention to celebs like Kristen Bell who have been campaigning to be a part of the next few films.

"I'm supportive of anyone who's a fan," she said with a smile. "A lot of people don't make it out of The Hunger Games — I hope I'm not surprising anyone. So, every book requires a new set of recruits, so it's going to be really fun to see who ends up in the next edition."

Just days after Katy Perry broke her silence for the first time since news of her split from husband Russell Brand, the singer has announced she'll no longer be attending the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People's Choice Awards," she tweeted on Monday (January 9) about her previously scheduled appearance. "I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! #KATYCATS." The singer is up for seven awards at the show, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Pop Artist and Song of the Year for her Kanye West-assisted "E.T."

A week after Brand filed for divorce from his pop-star wife of 14 months, Perry used the social-networking site to thank her fans for sticking by her during this trying personal time — without directly confirming the split. "I am so grateful for all the love and support I've had from people around the world," she wrote. "You guys have made my heart happy again."

In another tweet, she addressed the tabloid chatter that has been swirling since news of the split hit the Web on December 30. "Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me," she said, "Not a blog, magazine, 'close sources' or my family."

Perry's still scheduled to make two appearances on her California Dreams Tour later this month, one on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another on January 22 in the Philippines, according to her website. With the PCA appearance canceled, Perry's next awards-show appearance could take place February 12 at the Grammys, where she's up for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Firework."

Last week, "RapFix Live" kicked off 2012 in grand fashion. Not only did Maino take over the red couch to give us his predictions for the next month (hint: he, Katy Perry and Rihanna fall into a love triangle), but Virginia rapper Skillz also came through to perform his "2011 Rap Up." This week, Yo Gotti will swing through and fill Sway in on his long-awaited major-label debut, Live From the Kitchen

The Memphis spitter has reigned as one of rap's most exciting underground artists thanks to his Cocaine Muzik mixtape series. And he's also notched a few hits on his belt, including the 2009 club banger "5 Star" featuring Gucci Mane, Trina and an up-and-coming Nicki Minaj. The song would go on to peak at #11 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart. Even though label drama led to album delay, Gotti continued to make hits. Next up was "Woman Lie, Men Lie" with Lil Wayne, then "For the Hood" with Gucci Mane and 2011's sing-songy "We Can Get it On."

If Yo Gotti weren't enough, Brooklyn MC Saigon will also stop by "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. Giddy made a serious impact in 2011 when he finally dropped his critically acclaimed debut album, The Greatest Story Never Told. On Monday (January 9), Sai premiered his OutKast-sampling track, "I Am 4 Real," on MTV's RapFix blog. "I Am 4 Real" is the first track off of Sai's upcoming Warning Shots 3: One Foot in the Grave mixtape.

Catch Yo Gotti and Saigon on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. And send your questions to @MTVRapFiX!

Blue Ivy Carter Makes Debut On New Jay-Z Track

'My most greatest creation was you,' Jay tells his newborn daughter on 'Glory'
By Rob Markman

Only a few days old and young Blue Ivy Carter has already clocked in a duet with her big poppa. On Monday (January 9), Jay-Z dropped "Glory" featuring B.I.C. on his Life and Times blog.

Over a simple but soulful loop, Jay dedicates his bars to he and Beyoncé's newborn daughter. "The most amazing feeling I feel/ Words can't describe the feeling, for real/ Baby I'll paint the sky blue/ My most greatest creation was you," Hov begins over the Pharrell-produced track.

For the heartfelt dedication, Jigga employs a slow flow, rhyming almost as if in spoken word. The measured pace only helps to intensify the emotion. Hov goes on to rhyme about the "false alarms" and "false start" that he and B faced leading up to the birth of the couple's first child. As guarded as Jay has been throughout the entire pregnancy, he opens about the couple's intimate moments, painting a picture of Baby Blue dancing in B's belly and then playfully asking, "Did you wiggle your hands for her?"

The Brooklyn-bred MC goes on to look back on his own troubled past, wishing that he had prayed more, but seemingly thankful that all of the drama of his drug-dealing past is behind him so he could enjoy the moment. "A younger, smarter, faster me," he describes his new bundle of joy.

Jay-Z goes even deeper and doesn't hold back. In the song's final verse, he tells little Ms. Blue Ivy of her grandfather's demise, telling her that despite being an absentee father, "deep down" Adnis Reeves was "a good man." Jay goes on to tell his baby girl that she was conceived in Paris and even opens up about a "miscarriage."

And he doesn't hold back when he delivers a healthy brand of lyricism, spitting, "You're my child with the child from Destiny's Child/ That's a hell of a recipe."

As the song fades out, baby Blue Ivy makes her first appearance on record, crying and cooing as Pharrell brings the drums and soul sample to a close. Glorious.

'Breaking Dawn,' 'Hunger Games' Top Movie Brawl Sweet 16

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 12:27 AM PST

Anything can happen as front-runners and dark horses duke it out for the top spot in our tourney.
By Eric Ditzian

What a ride it's been so far in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012! After more than a quarter million votes, fans have whittled down the competition from an opening round of 32 films to a 16-flick bracket topped by #1 seeds "Hunger Games" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Now that the pretenders and also-rans have been axed — See ya later "Expendables 2"! Thanks for playing "Rock of Ages"! — it's time for the big guns to face off. Let's get right to it.

Upper West Region
Otherwise known as the Robert Pattinson Honorary Region, this section of the bracket features three RPattz films. While we love seeing the 3-D re-release of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" sneaking into the Sweet 16 after a wild-card win in round one, George Lucas' baby doesn't have much of a shot to knock "Breaking Dawn" from its perch atop the bracket. Twi-fans came out in force over the weekend to conquer "Hunger Games" and assure itself the highest vote total of round one. So Pattinson and his vampire pals have got to be feeling good as voting moves forward. Things are much more up in the air in the region's other matchup: "Cosmopolis" vs. "Bel Ami." Will Pattinson fans favor his cerebral, David Cronenberg-directed drama or his Uma Thurman-co-starring love story, which holds out the prospect of, as RPattz himself told us, "a lot of my crack in it." This matchup is just too close to call at this point.

Lower West Region
This region is all about the superheroes, though neither "Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man" nor "Marvel's The Avengers" performed heroically in the first round. The MTV Movies team had been eyeing "TDKR" as one of the films to beat headed into the tournament, but fans didn't turn out to support Christopher Nolan's final Batman film in the numbers we expected. "Avengers" managed to nab a six seed, but Captain America and his crew had better bring their A-games if they want to give "TDKR" a run for its money. By contrast, "Spider-Man," which barely survived round one, is going to have to deliver nothing short of an inspired performance if it expects to knock off "Dark Shadows." Tim Burton's adaptation of the supernatural soap opera announced itself as a potential dark horse after an impressive and unexpected first-round showing. An Elite Eight showdown between "Dark Shadows" and "Dark Knight" would make for a kick-ass brawl.

Upper East Region
"Hunger Games" enters the Sweet 16 with a bit of wind taken out of its sails, following its failure to garner the most round-one votes after leading for most of the week. Its new matchup is a pivotal one, and a blowout of "Prometheus" would go a long way toward assuring fans that "Hunger Games" has its eye locked squarely on a final matchup with "Breaking Dawn." But before we get there, "Hunger Games" will have to contend with two action flicks, in "John Carter" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," that have been surging in recent days. "G.I. Joe" didn't even look like it was going to make the Sweet 16 until a last-minute rise. That sequel could potentially play the spoiler in this four-seed vs. five-seed matchup.

Lower East Region
Anything can happen in this region. Based on its pedigree, you might expect "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" to run roughshod over anything at this point in the tournament. But Peter Jackson's flick faces off against Emma Watson's "Perks of Being a Wallflower," a wild-card entrant that can easily spoil the hopes of everyone in Middle-earth. This matchup to just too close to call. And don't count out another upset in the game between "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "The Woman in Black." Though "SWATH" has a lot of heat behind it, based on a top-notch trailer and the leadership of Kristen Stewart, you underestimate Daniel Radcliffe's fans at your own peril. But which star has the most feverish following? The answer to that question will likely reveal which film moves on to the Elite Eight in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012.

What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It's time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

Chris Brown Is The Male Beyonce, Fat Joe Says

'You know, he's a sex symbol,' Joe Crack tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Fat Joe

When it comes to Fat Joe's "Another Round" collaborator, Chris Brown, the Bronx MC holds the singer to a high standard. Breezy doesn't just bring his soulful vocals and soothing melodies to Joe's track, his appearance in the Colin Tilley-directed video also provides some eye candy for the ladies.

"You know, that guy, he's like the 'guy Beyoncé,' " Joe joked to MTV News last week.

In the clip, CB and a slimmed-down Joe Crack serenade a number of bikini-clad beauties on a golden beach. "Don't you be holding back your love," Breezy sings on the hook before assuring his lady that after making love with him she's sure to want "another round."

Brown really gets into it on the song's bridge and final hook. The blond (again) lothario splashes around in the ocean, tearing off his shirt as he puts more emotion into his vocals. Joe likened Brown's performance in "Another Round" to Queen B's performance in her 2006 video for "Déjà Vu," where she runs through a cornfield while singing for her special someone. Like most Beyoncé videos, the visuals were particularly exciting to her male fanbase. Joe said Breezy's "Another Round" appearance has been evoking a similar reaction with the rapper's female following.

"This guy takes his shirt off — I played it for a couple of chicks before we released it and they just start goin' crazy and buggin' out like, 'Oh my God, yo,' " Joe laughed. "You know, he's a sex symbol."

Do you agree with Fat Joe comparing Chris Brown's sex appeal to Beyoncé's? Tell us in the comments!

Jennifer Lawrence has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce this year's Oscar nominees.

The "Hunger Games" actress will be joined by Academy President Tom Sherak at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on January 24 to reveal just who will be up for one of those coveted gold statues, the Academy announced on Monday (January 9). The show, airing on ABC, is set to take place on February 26 with host Billy Crystal.

Lawrence was up for Best Actress at the 2011 show for her star-making turn in "Winter's Bone." While she lost to "Black Swan" star Natalie Portman, she made headlines thanks to her body-hugging red dress.

She's next set to star in "The Hunger Games," set for release on March 23. The same day her Oscars gig was announced, Lionsgate announced plans for pre-sale tickets for the highly anticipated flick, which also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. For those hungry to get their hands on tickets early, advanced sales kick off on February 22.

When Lawrence was first cast in the film, which is based on the beloved novels by Suzanne Collins, fans had some reservations about whether she could fully embody the books' heroine, Katniss Everdeen. "I wasn't aware that everybody was so upset until I after I got my hair dyed, and people were like, 'Oh my gosh, blond hair can turn brown. Wow. It's a miracle,' " Lawrence told MTV News in May of last year.

Beyonce And Jay-Z: Experts Break Down Baby Rumors

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 01:01 AM PST

How did B and Jay go unnoticed at the hospital? Why are there so many incorrect reports? Celeb experts explain.
By Jocelyn Vena

In the days leading up to little Blue Ivy's birth, Beyoncé and Jay-Z watchers were wondering when and where the couple would welcome their first child into the world. With sightings of a still-pregnant Queen B out and about in New York City, it seemed that it could happen at any given moment.

The rumor mill was in overdrive just as Blue Ivy was born over the weekend — not that it hadn't been spinning wildly since Beyoncé and Jay-Z announced the pregnancy at the VMAs in August.

"There were so many rumors leading up, in general, surrounding her pregnancy from the moment that there was a rumor that she was pregnant. Then, once she was pregnant, we saw over the last week multiple reports, and obviously the early ones are erroneous, that she had given birth," said David Caplan, who has worked at celeb magazines like Star and People. "So there was a lot of buildup to her finally giving birth. There was also a degree of suspicion, because there were so many erroneous reports out there. You had to wait a little bit to see what the conversation would be."

Jay and B have yet to talk about their daughter's birth, leaving the confirmations to their friends and family on Twitter. That level of privacy has been key to not only this past weekend's birth, but Beyonceé and Jay-Z's relationship in general.

"All those rumors that swirled around, that's because she won't play that game," HuffPost celebrity columnist Rob Shuter said. "I think that's because she kept it so private, because she has not spoken about this. She won't address the rumors, and I think that when you're that private and the public is that passionate, that's when rumors often start."

The couple reportedly paid more than $1 million to have privacy at NYC's Lenox Hill Hospital. According to some reports, the couple requested so much privacy that some parents were prevented from seeing their own newborns. But the experts said that level of isolation is nothing new for celebrities.

"It's very common for celebrities to sneak in and out of hospitals," Caplan said. "It's actually very easy for celebrities to sneak in and out. There's multiple doors in and out. They use decoys. There'll be someone who looks like a celebrity. You go at different times of the night. Hospitals are also, at the same time, hotbeds of activity, so it's not like you're going somewhere really quiet."

"This was a very carefully arranged, organized hospital visit. Nothing was left to chance," Shuter added. "I suspect the conversations between her security team and officials with the hospital [went on] for several weeks. Working with big celebrities myself, these moments are very, very carefully choreographed. Not only because they want to protect their privacy, they also don't want to have a dangerous scene on their hands. Hospitals in New York and L.A. especially, where a lot of celebrities live, has people on staff that are there to make sure these things work very carefully and in a very private matter."
