There will never be another Heavy D.

When the Mount Vernon, New York, MC debuted in 1987 as part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz, he made an immediate impact with his infectious dance hits. For the most part, Heav directed his material toward the ladies and even dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. With his music, Waterbed Heav oozed sex appeal, paving the way for other big-boned MCs like the Notorious B.I.G., Fat Joe and Rick Ross to garner a female fanbase.

Heavy was also a noted dancer and paired each of his hits with well-choreographed steps. It's difficult to imagine where the likes of Soulja Boy and Cali Swag District would be without Heavy D's contributions.

On November 8, Heavy D left us, but his music will live on forever. For the unfamiliar, MTV News has put together an essential playlist, while at the same time giving the MC's longtime fans something to remember him by. It doesn't matter if you've been rocking with Heavy D since his 1987 debut or with his more recent foray into reggae and dancehall: Let's all collectively gather around the iPod and wish Dwight "Heavy D" Myers a Peace Journey!

"The Overweight Lover's in the House"
The big man sure knew how to make an entrance. Along with his group the Boyz, Heavy D made his presence known with "The Overweight Lover's in the House" from the group's debut album, Living Large. "See the weight that I am, is a big lover man/ Check out the rhyme, in due time you'll be a Heav D fan," he rapped — and boy was he right.

"Mr. Big Stuff"
Back when many still considered hip-hop to be mere noise, Heavy D made older skeptics take notice when he sampled Jean Knight's 1971 hit Stax single "Mr. Big Stuff." Keeping much of the song's original melody, Heav rhymed over a bombastic drum track and put his big-man pride on full display.

"Somebody for Me"
In 1989, Heavy D & the Boyz scored their first platinum plaque with their sophomore album, Big Tyme. The album had a number of hits, like "We Got Our Own Thang" and "Gyrlz, They Love Me," but none bigger than the New Jack Swing-inspired "Somebody for Me." In the track's video, Heav also cleaned up his act and ditched the track jacket and sneakers for a well-tailored suit and hard-bottom shoes. Good choice!

"Now That We Found Love"
Heavy had a gang of hits, but 1991's "Now That We Found Love" is among his biggest. With '90s R&B singer Aaron Hall on the hook and Teddy Riley on the beat, Heavy D & the Boyz kept clubs pumping with their popular dance hit. Through his music, Heav also kept things positive. Judging from this infectious groove, it was nearly impossible to tell that the rapper was mourning the death of group member Trouble T Roy, who had tragically passed a year before the song's release.

"Don't Curse" (featuring Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth)
Because most of his catalog revolved around lovey-dovey dance hits, some hardcore rap purists refused to give Heavy his props, but when Mr. Big Stuff gathered noted MCs Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth for 1991's "Don't Curse," even the haters had to give it up.

Soul for Real's "Candy Rain" remix
This R&B quartet didn't have many hits, but their 1995 single "Candy Rain" was all the band needed to cement their place in popular music. And who did they call for the song's remix? Heavy Diddly, Diddly, Diddly D, of course.

"Nuttin' But Love"
Heavy D & the Boyz snatched up a third platinum plaque with their 1994 album, Nuttin' But Love. The LP's title track, produced by DJ Kid Capri, was a crowd favorite. On the song, Heav professed his affection for his doubting lover. Want a real 1990s flashback? Check the video for a cameo from Rebecca Gayheart, a.k.a. "the Noxzema girl."

Michael Jackson's "Jam"
It's one thing to do records with rappers like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap, but when the King of Pop comes calling, that's a whole different level. When Michael Jackson needed a spitter to compliment his Teddy Riley-produced smash "Jam," he tapped Heavy D. "Making funky jams with my man, Michael Jackson," the Overweight Lover rapped over the bouncy track. His man Michael Jackson — just let that soak in for a second.

Janet Jackson's "Alright" remix
There was no one more innovative than the King of Pop, but MJ wasn't the first Jackson to feature Heav. Before 1992's "Jam," sister Janet snagged the rapper for her 1991 remix of "Alright" from her Rhythm Nation album. Not only did he get to lay vocals alongside Janet, in the song's video, he co-starred with the legendary Cab Calloway.

Grand Puba's "Let's Get It On" (featuring Heavy D, 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G.)
This 1994 underground track usually goes unnoticed, but it's an important footnote in rap history. Before their famous feud and untimely deaths, the Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac collaborated with Grand Puba and Heavy D on this Eddie F-produced track. It is the only known in-studio collaboration between the legendary rappers, and Heavy D was there for it all, trading bars with Big and 'Pac.

"No Matter What"
There is no doubt, Heavy D was a hip-hop soul through and through, but the Jamaican star returned to his roots when he reinvented himself as a reggae artist on the 2008 album Vibes. The music may have changed, but Heav still crooned about love and overall good vibes.

On Tuesday's "Dancing With the Stars," it came down to the commentator and the Kardashian.

Low scorer Nancy Grace was the one booted, just one week shy of making it into the semifinals. But the HLN host seemed to take it all in stride.

"I am so proud, but I really cannot take the credit," she said, standing next to partner Tristan MacManus. "It's been all Tristan from the get-go, and the whole crew at 'Dancing With the Stars.' "

MacManus, a newbie on the show this season, thanked fans of the show for embracing him as the new professional.

"We've had a blast," he said. "We'd like to thank everyone. Thanks for being very welcoming to me. We've really, really had a fun time and all the support that we get from you all, that really pushes us to do it. From the start, we said to each other, 'It's not about being the best, it's about doing the best,' and I think that's what we did."

Grace said she was proud to make it as far as she had in the competition. On Monday night's show, she tangoed and, for her instant dance, did the jive; the judges weren't all that impressed. They told her she got lost in the choreography but that they loved the chemistry between her and MacManus. They ended up with a total of 44 out of 60.

Despite the low score, Grace was pleased with her "DWTS" experience.

"Not only did I meet a lot of goals, I also became friends with not only the other stars, but with the dancers as well," she said. "I also want to thank the viewers who've stuck by me since way back when."

Were you sad to see Nancy go? Let us know in the comments.

Michael Jackson Estate: What's Next?

Post-Conrad Murray trial projects include Fan Fest in Las Vegas, Bad reissue and Cirque du Soleil's 'Immortal' soundtrack.

Michael Jackson has remained just as big a star in death as he was in life — if not bigger. Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and Tupac Shakur before him, interest in all things Jackson spiked following the singer's death and continues to be strong two years after his shocking passing on June 25, 2009.

Jackson's name has been in the news on a daily basis over the past month thanks to the involuntary manslaughter trial of his former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, who was found guilty, the jury announced Monday. It's not the kind of publicity the Jackson estate is looking for, but with the trial now over, the focus will likely turn to the next projects from the singer's vaults.

To date, the estate has been busy lining up one project after another, beginning with 2009's This Is It, the documentary on Jackson's planned comeback tour that grossed close to $200 million worldwide on its way to becoming the #2 music documentary of all time.

That was followed by the release of Michael, a posthumous album with unreleased Jackson tracks that sold more than 500,000 copies, alongside more than 1 million units of the This Is It soundtrack. There were also 3 million units shifted of the Ubisoft video game "Michael Jackson: The Experience," which helped rack up the more than $1 billion the estate has brought in since Jackson's death through a combination of music sales, film/TV revenue, music publishing, licensing and a $31 million recording contract with Sony.

Cirque du Soleil's traveling MJ extravaganza, "Immortal," made its American debut this month, boasting a soundtrack that features a number of mash-ups and reimaginings of the singer's music, plus some previously unheard bits. The show's soundtrack is slated to hit stores November 21.

When the show hits Las Vegas in December, it will coincide with the annual Michael Jackson Fan Fest (December 3-14), the ritual gathering of the flock that this year will include a raft of never-before-seen memorabilia from the King of Pop. Among the items at the first-ever estate-authorized fest at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino are the actual gates of Neverland Ranch, Jackson's personal book collection, the 1999 Rolls Royce Seraph limousine with 24-karat gold embellishments designed by the singer, the 10-foot-tall HIStory statue, the spaceship set from the "Scream" video, the throne from the Egyptian-themed "Remember the Time" clip and the tank from the "Earth Song" live performance.

Also reportedly due soon is a repackaging of Jackson's 1987 Bad album, which, like previous reissues, is expected to feature previously unearthed bonus material. The original album featured landmark songs such as the title track, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," "Smooth Criminal" and "Dirty Diana."

Given the amount of unreleased material that was reportedly left in the vaults at Jackson's death, there is a strong possibility that another album of unheard tunes could be in the offing soon as well.

Are you excited to hear more unreleased tracks from the King of Pop? Tell us below!

Nickelback, The Detroit Lions And The Sound Of Silence

Bigger Than the Sound pens an open letter to the long-suffering Lions about how to handle their latest public-relations disaster.
By James Montgomery

Dear Detroit Lions,

How's it going? You don't have to answer; I was just being polite. After all, everyone knows things are going pretty well right now. You guys are 6-2, putting up points like it's nobody's business. Calvin Johnson is a beast. Ndamukong Suh is terrifying. Matthew Stafford has avoided injuring himself while putting on his backward ball cap. For the first time in a long time, things are looking up in the Motor City — at least when it comes to football.

Anyway, I'm writing because I'm concerned. Not really about your chances of making the playoffs (they appear to be pretty solid), but about Nickelback. As you are probably aware, someone (presumably within your organization) booked them as the halftime entertainment at your annual Thanksgiving game, which this year just so happens to be against the undefeated, Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, meaning that for once, folks will be tuning in for reasons other than "tryptophan coma." And, this, as you are most certainly aware, is a problem.

See, recently, one of your fans started an online petition asking you to remove the 'Back from the halftime festivities, mostly because he is afraid it will give the national TV audience the wrong idea about your fair city (I know!). He has wisely brought up the fact that there is no shortage of artists who are actually from Detroit, and all of them would be a better fit than the hard-partying Canadian rockers. And he has called the very validity of your franchise into question, chalking the performance up to little more than "some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions."

He is not alone in those suspicions, either. So far, more than 50,000 people have signed the petition. People are angry ("Haven't the good people of Detroit been through enough?" one signee asks). Quite simply, this is a public-relations disaster on par with the Matt Millen era.

But here's the thing: It doesn't have to be. For three days now, I've been leaving messages with your media relations department, trying to get some sort of statement from the team about this whole debacle. So far, I've yet to receive a reply. That's not good, guys. Maybe you're not super psyched to have Nickelback perform at what is arguably your biggest game since the 1991 NFC Championship, or maybe Bob Seger just wasn't available, but the simple fact is this: You guys have to say something.

Maybe you just release a statement, explaining that your hands are tied and this whole thing is the fault of some Canadian sympathizer within the NFL. Perhaps you say head coach Jim Schwartz is a huge Nickelback fan (he sort of looks like one, really) and their performance was contractually obligated. You could even say Kid Rock personally recommended them, since that at least seems somewhat plausible. The bottom line is, your silence isn't helping matters; it's making them worse. Perhaps worse than they've ever been. And for a team that's spent something like five decades disappointing its fanbase, that's quite an accomplishment.

And here's the thing: You don't even have to say something nice. You could just come out and say "Deal with it, Lions fans. Nickelback are playing." That one might not go over as poorly as you'd imagine, either. After all — and I say this as a Buffalo Bills fan — Lions backers have been through tragedies far worse than this. They watched as Barry Sanders retired. They've witnessed one playoff victory in 53 years. They've seen players die of heart attacks on the field and All-Pro defensemen suspended for gambling on games. They sat by as you drafted Joey Harrington, Roy Williams and Charles Rogers. They endured Marty Mornhinweg. Steve Mariucci. Wayne Fontes in Mickey Mouse ears. The list is as endless as it is psychologically scarring ... and, frankly, a Nickelback performance would probably only rank somewhere in the middle of it.

So, really, it's time to speak up. It would seem that Nickelback are locked in for halftime, so you might as well get behind them. In doing so, you'd manage to avoid what is very quickly becoming an avalanche of bad publicity. It may not be fair to Lions fans, but then again, neither was the 2008 season.

Sincerely,
James

Brett Ratner Out As Oscar Producer After Gay Slur

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 04:30 AM PST

'Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable,' Academy president says in a statement.
By Kara Warner

In a move that falls right in line with the old adage "actions speak louder than words," director Brett Ratner has stepped down as producer of the 2012 Academy Awards.

Ratner submitted his resignation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization in charge of the Oscars, on Tuesday (November 8), according to a statement posted on Oscars.org. The "Tower Heist" director has been making headlines over the past few days — first, due to his comments about a sexual relationship with Olivia Munn, then at a screening of "Heist," where he used a gay slur, claiming that "rehearsal is for f--s."

"He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Academy President Tom Sherak said in the statement. "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."

Ratner explained his resignation in an open letter to the entertainment industry, obtained by Deadline.

"Over the last few days, I've gotten a well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most in this industry expressing their outrage and disappointment over the hurtful and stupid things I said in a number of recent media appearances," he wrote. "To them, and to everyone I've hurt and offended, I'd like to apologize publicly and unreservedly.

"So many artists and craftspeople in our business are members of the LGBT community, and it pains me deeply that I may have hurt them," he continued. "I should have known this all along, but at least I know it now: words do matter. Having love in your heart doesn't count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and bigoted. With this in mind, and to all those who understandably feel that apologies are not enough, please know that I will be taking real action over the coming weeks and months in an effort to do everything I can both professionally and personally to help stamp out the kind of thoughtless bigotry I've so foolishly perpetuated. As a first step, I called Tom Sherak this morning and resigned as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards telecast. Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents."

Ratner apologized for the gay slur on Monday. "I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb and outdated way of expressing myself," Ratner said in a statement. "Everyone who knows me knows that I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words."

The statement was condemned by gay-rights organization GLAAD, which acknowledged the apology but said it did not go far enough.

Sherak initially stood behind Ratner as 2012 Oscar producer but warned that the organization would not put up with any more indiscretions. "The bottom line is, this won't and can't happen again," he told Deadline on Monday. "It will not happen again."

No word yet on whether this will affect plans for Ratner-recruited "Heist" star Eddie Murphy to host the show.

Heavy D: He Did His Own Thang

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 04:54 AM PST

We reflect on late hip-hop legend's career and impact on the next generation.
By Kelley L. Carter

Heavy D
Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images

There was this odd but super cool sound that rolled off Heavy D's tongue that we all tried to emulate. It was his melodic calling card; it was the key thing he inserted into Heavy D & the Boyz' "We Got Our Own Thang."

Its significance was cemented in pop culture when he guest-starred in a 1989 episode of one of the era's hottest sitcoms, "A Different World." He was set to be a featured performer at a fundraiser on the show, and the pompous, pretentious Whitley wasn't having it.

"I'll tell you what lacks melody is that diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly dee," she drawled, displaying her disgust for hip-hop, completely unaware that she was, in fact, bemoaning Heavy D himself.

Heav, playing a caricature of himself (and an old junior high friend of Dwayne Wayne), laughed and shrugged it off. We all chuckled with the laugh track as Whitley realized her mistake and Heavy showed her the right way to do the thing that had all of us — in the 'hood, in the 'burbs and in the sticks — trying to copy him every time we heard one of his wicked, uptempo tracks. We next see him onstage, doing that infamous Heavy D shake, performing the track "Somebody for Me," the single that questioned — and longed for — a woman's affections for the man who dubbed himself the Overweight Lover.

Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, died Tuesday (November 8) at an L.A. hospital. He was a young 44.

TMZ is reporting that a 911 call was placed from his Beverly Hills home around 11:25 a.m. PT to report an unconscious male on the walkway. When help arrived, the entertainer was conscious and speaking and was taken to the hospital.

He died shortly thereafter.

Heav was that kind of touchable performer. We felt comfortable with his Overweight Lover nickname — he was the big guy who could move. His size never stopped him. He moved in ways that intimidated the slimmest dude in the crowd.

He was smooth, dapper and celebrated the around-the-way-girl through song; his music helped soundtrack 10th-grade dances near and far, and his colorful, danceable and at times sensitive brand of hip-hop clearly proved to be wildly influential to new-millennium household names like Diddy or Drake.

In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who came up after Heavy D that doesn't cite him as an influence — and if they didn't say it out loud, their showmanship certainly was a giveaway.

He brought professionalism to live hip-hop shows, and because he fancied a variety of music and musical stylings, his shows were thought-out, deliberate and defined all that New Jack Swing embodied.

Heavy brought the bounce to hip-hop and his smooth delivery made every woman look at big boys with new eyes. He was sexy — so were his lyrics, and so was his style. He was one of few rappers to collaborate with Michael Jackson (he rapped on "Jam"), and we all applauded when he linked up with Janet Jackson for an "Alright" remix.

His death is tragic for a number of reasons. Until last month, we hadn't seen Heavy perform live onstage in 15 years. When he hit the stage back in October for the BET Hip Hop Awards, he showed the young guys that he could still swing with the new New Jacks.

He also showed off an amazing 135-pound weight loss, but his hip-hop moniker was still fitting for a guy who gave so much to a musical genre that continues to shape pop culture.

Even past his hit-producing hip-hop prime, Heavy continued to be a force in entertainment. He'd often dabbled in film and television, and most recently. we saw him in an episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and the just-released "Tower Heist."

Some of hip-hop's biggest luminaries tweeted their affections for the rapper Tuesday. It was undeniable what he brought to the genre.

He was one of the biggest who ever did it — and he got there because he did his own thang.

Justin Bieber Will Take Paternity Test In Two Weeks

As soon as Justin Bieber returns from a European promotional jaunt in two weeks he will take a paternity test to prove that he did not father a child with a fan who has claimed the pair had a backstage tryst.

Bieber's spokesperson, Matthew Hiltzik, confirmed for MTV News that the test has been scheduled. "I can confirm that the team has proactively made arrangements for Justin to be tested upon his return and we're going to hold everyone who is involved responsible." Bieber, 17, has denied that he is the father of accuser Mariah Yeater's four-month-old child and his team has promised legal action following the results of the test.

"It's sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims," Hiltzik said in a statement. "We'll vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to protect Justin and to hold those involved with bringing this suit accountable for their actions."

Bieber — who was a big winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday night with wins for Best Pop and Best Male — appeared on the "Today" show on Friday to promote his just-released Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, and addressed the situation. "I'd just like to say, basically, that none of those allegations are true," he told Matt Lauer. "I know I'm going to be a target, but I'm never going to be a victim."

Bieber explained on "Today" that the logistics of her claim don't fit with his hectic schedule. "I think it's crazy because every night after the show, I've gone right from the stage right to my car," he explained. "So it's crazy that some people want to make up some false allegations, but to set the record straight, none of it is true. Never met the woman."

It was also reported last week that the incident could spark a statutory rape investigation by Los Angeles police because the woman was 19 years old at the time and Bieber was allegedly 16.

After he returns to the U.S. on November 17, Bieber will visit "Today" again on November 23 to perform a concert on the morning show. He is also slated to sit down with the ladies of "The View" that day.

Heavy, who was born Dwight Arrington Myers, was most known for his role in the group Heavy D & the Boyz. Together, the group recorded an array of hip-hop dance hits like 1991's "Now That We Found Love" and 1994's "Nuttin' but Love." Aside from his own hits, Heavy rapped on Michael Jackson's 1991 hit "Jam" and a remix to Janet Jackson's 1990 single "Alright" from her Rhythm Nation album.

Photos: The life and career of Heavy D.

According to a press release from the Beverly Hills Police Department obtained by MTV News, the Mount Vernon, New York, MC was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center after a 911 call was placed from the musician's Beverly Hills home. The call was made around 11:25 a.m. PT to report an unconscious male, but when help arrived, Heavy was conscious and speaking, though he had difficulty breathing. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead just more than an hour later at 1 p.m. PT. As of now, the cause of death is unknown, but there are no signs of foul play.

Beverly Hills detectives revealed that Heavy returned home after a shopping trip. While walking into his building, the rapper/actor experienced difficulty breathing. As he was being assisted to his apartment. he collapsed in a hallway.

Myers also composed the theme song for the 1990s sketch comedy show "In Living Color" and, as an actor, appeared in several television shows like "Roc," "A Different World" and "Boston Public." He also had roles in numerous films like "New Jersey Drive," "Cider House Rules" and, most recently, "Tower Heist" with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller.

Most recently, the rapper/dancehall singer closed out the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards with an energetic performance consisting of several dance numbers. Heav powered through a host of his classics like "The Overweight Lover," "Mr. Big Stuff," "Is It Good to You" and "I Want Somebody" to the delight of the live crowd.

Heavy was also active on Twitter, often sending positive messages to his followers. His last message, which came earlier Tuesday, read, "BE INSPIRED!"

50 Cent has been known to battle a rapper or two, but with his new book, "Playground," the G-Unit general is taking a stance against bullies. Before a signing Friday at a New York City Barnes & Noble, Fif told MTV News the book was inspired by his son Marques.

"I was inspired to write this project based on a conversation with my son," 50 said. "He was telling about someone else who was experiencing being bullied around him, and in order to explain the scenario, I had to explain it from the actual bully's perspective and say that he's dealing with his emotions the wrong way."

"Playground" tells the story from the bully's perspective and attempts to explore where the cycle of abuse begins. "The actual character, Butterball, he's dealing with multiple issues," 50 explained. "He's dealing with weight issues: He's overweight, and you know how common childhood obesity is right now."

He later added: "Bullying doesn't necessarily mean hitting or physically hurting someone. It can be something that you say that emotionally hurts the person."

The Before I Self Destruct MC also found inspiration in another book: Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. "When you think about it — because the book is amazing — but it's about a kid being bullied, and we're laughing at the character being bullied throughout the project," Fif explained.

"It's kind of negative when you think about it, because you are laughing at the kid being taken advantage of. But it was an interesting perspective to write it from, and it kept my interest the entire time I was going through the book, so at the end of it, you get the message."

Since Chelsea Settles launched herself as MTV's next great reality star last month, it's been an interesting journey for both viewers and Settles herself.

In the episode airing tonight (November 8), Chelsea Settles gets her butt kicked during her first workout in the City of Angels. "I'm most nervous for the first workout with Angela. It was insanity," she dished to MTV News. "It was nuts, nuts, nuts, nuts. I wanted to quit. I felt like I should just be fat for the rest of my life."

During the super-tough workout, she said she was thinking, " 'Why do I need to go through this?' I knew that I wanted to lose weight, but I didn't know the hard work and dedication it would take to get there. I wish there was some sort of magic cure to end it all. I didn't want to put in the hard work. I was embarrassed ... so it was kind of mental."

Over the course of the season, those trying moments have helped Settles connect with the audience, and fan feedback has been incredibly positive toward her. "It's really crazy, and I can't believe it because we're almost halfway there," she said. "It's kind of a whirlwind but I'm excited to get to interact with a lot of the viewers, and I'm glad that the response has been the way that it has. There's such an outpouring of love and sincerity from so many people, and I just feel grateful."

While fans love watching Settles grow week after week, it's been really overwhelming for her. "I cringe every Tuesday before the show airs," she admitted. "I have butterflies in my stomach. I don't know what to expect. It's just it's weird to see that I played the victim so much. I never realized that I did that. I blamed everything on my weight, and in a lot of the situations, it had nothing to do with my weight."

So, what does Settles blame for her early strife on the show? "It was just lack of confidence and me needing to come into my own, but I just have to accept myself as that girl and love her just as much as I love myself now," she said. "And that's been the process that I've been going through."

Don't miss the new episode of "Chelsea Settles," airing tonight (November 8) at 10 p.m. ET/PT (9 Central) on MTV.

Nas Put Amy Winehouse Song 'In Perspective' For Producer

'He put that energy back into [the song], because she repped for him,' Salaam Remi tells MTV News of 'Like Smoke.'

The late Amy Winehouse and Nas had a mutual bond that few knew about.

Not only do Amy and Nas share the same September 14 birthday, but according to producer Salaam Remi, they have a number of collaborations that were left on the cutting-room floor. The recently released "Like Smoke" is the first time fans got to hear them in tandem.

"Amy sang on records that we never put out with Nas," the multiplatinum hitmaker told MTV News last month in New York's Jungle Studios. "As far as them now getting on the same record, that was a conversation in play for the last couple of years but that just didn't happen yet, and when I listened to that song, I was like, you know what? This makes sense, to actually make that happen as far as things that she wants to do that didn't happen yet."

"Like Smoke" will appear on Amy's December 6 posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, and features Nas dropping a pair of brand-new verses in between Winehouse's bluesy vocal. Though Amy wasn't around to hear the rhymes Nas dropped just a couple of weeks ago, Salaam is confident that based off her admiration for the Queensbridge rapper, she would approve.

Amy famously sang about Nas on "Me and Mr. Jones" from her breakout Back to Black album, and the two became acquainted through their mutual friend Salaam. "He just put it in perspective for me," Remi said of Nas' mind-set before writing his portion of "Like Smoke."

"I never wanted you to be my man, I just need your company," Amy starts out singing to an unknown lover. Nas on the other hand speaks directly of his fallen friend when he spits, "I be out in London, Camden, hunting for the answers/ Why did God take away the homey," he questions.

"As far as myself, I feel like I'm repping her musically because that's what I know of her more than anyone else," he said. "And then as far as where [Nas is] at, he put that energy back into [the song], because she repped for him. I mean, who writes songs for people, unless you really respect them?"

'Yes sir! Jigga man is on the title track,' Rihanna tweets Tuesday.

It's been a while since Jay-Z and Rihanna have collaborated, and the release of her new album Talk That Talk on November 21 seems like as good a time as any.

Norwegian production team Stargate spilled the beans that Hova will appear on Ri's next album. In an interview posted on Complex.com, Stargate member Tor Erik Hermansen described the track as a "midtempo banger with hard drums, dirty synths, and Rihanna and Jay at their best.

"We are very happy with the song, and Jay's verse is crazy — same with Rihanna's part," he told the mag.

Rihanna took to Twitter on Tuesday (November 8) to confirm that her mentor will appear on the song "Talk That Talk": "Yes sir! Jigga man is on the title track #TTT."

Rihanna and Jay have memorably collaborated in the past on her mega-hit "Umbrella" and his Blueprint 3 track "Run This Town."

The collabo news comes just days after Rihanna released the Talk That Talk track list. Fourteen songs made the final cut; 11 will be featured on the standard version, and the additional three on the deluxe version.

For those wondering just what the TTT era of Rihanna will look and sound like, her "We Found Love" video director, Melina Matsoukas, told us it will match the vibe of that clip. "I think it sets up definitely the imagery for the album, and it's in line with what they're doing," she said. "So that's good, and I'm sure there's plenty more, hopefully."

What are you expecting from the next Rihanna/Jay-Z collabo? Let us know in the comments!

Theophilus London Goes 'Super Emo' On 'Breaking Dawn' Soundtrack

'I'm just so stoked that all these cute girls that like vampires hear my song,' London says.
By Jocelyn Vena

The soundtrack for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" drops this week, 10 days before the fourth film in the "Twilight Saga" hits theaters. Chock-full of tracks by artists like Bruno Mars ("It Will Rain") and Christina Perri ("A Thousand Years"), the emotions on the album mirror the action in the Bill Condon-directed flick.

For his track, up-and-coming MC Theophilus London wanted to embrace another side of his musical persona. "It was very unusual to do the soundtrack. But as I progress more with my career, I want to do more stuff like that, soundtrack stuff," he told MTV News at the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York City.

"So when they asked me do it, I was very privileged and pleased. I wanted to do a super emo song about neighbors and how neighbors are very important. A lot of people are freaking out, but it's a whole new fanbase for me. I'm just so stoked that all these cute girls that like vampires hear my song."

London wrote the track specifically for the flick, which opens November 18, however, he admitted that he hasn't even seen a moment of any "Twilight" flick.

"I wrote the song specifically for the movie without even seeing the movie," he explained. "I'm happy. I'm sure a lot of musicians and writers want to be a part of the soundtrack. I'm just happy that I got picked over all those other acts. I appreciate it and there's a lot more to come."

Don't fret, Twilighters. London has every intention of seeing this next film. "I haven't seen any of the movies, but I swear when this 'Twilight' movie comes out, I'm going to the regular movie theater in a black tie with my friends," he joked. "And we'll have a small little red carpet; just stand up in the theater and take our photos."

Jonah Hill Clears Up Matthew Morrison 'Feud'

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 12:26 AM PST

'It's so funny, because it's so a joke,' says Hill, who will introduce an exclusive 'Sitter' clip Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Jonah Hill is not one to mess with. He made that clear on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" when he called out "Glee" star Matthew Morrison for using his name as a punch line, and he addressed it again during an "MTV First" for his upcoming film "The Sitter," airing Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com.

Hill took some time out of his interview with MTV News' Josh Horowitz to address the maybe (but not really) feud with TV's Mr. Schue. "It's so funny, because it's so a joke," he said. "I think it's so funny."

Hill explained that, during a party both he and Morrison attended, the "Glee" star used his name as a punch line in a joke he told Chace Crawford. Those two actors may have laughed, but Hill definitely didn't. He took his beef to "Late Night" and made the whole affair public. "So I called him out on 'Fallon' and pretend got really angry, like old WWF wrestling style. I got in the camera's face and stuff," Hill said.

Morrison saw this and replied with his own challenge that appeared on "Late Night" a few days later. "He made a video back, which was very funny, and I still have never seen him or spoken to him or anything," Hill explained.

Whether the feud is real, we (and Hill) still don't know, but things were only complicated when a friend of Hill's flew on the same plane as Morrison. "A guy I know was on a plane with him and was like, 'Hey, I'm friends with Jonah Hill.' And he's like, 'OK.' So [my friend] is like, 'Is this thing funny?' and [Morrison] is like, 'I don't know.' Not mean, just deadpan. 'I don't know.' I don't think either of us know what's really happening," Hill said.

All confusion aside, Hill assured Horowitz that he is ready if a battle ever comes. "I'm going to prepare to fight. If it ends up just being awesome and he's nice, I'll be prepared for that also, but I'm going to prepare to fight," Hill said. "Any type of "Glee" event, I'm prepared to throw down."

"MTV First: The Sitter" hits MTV and MTV.com on Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET with an exclusive clip from the movie and an interview with Jonah Hill immediately afterward!

Justin Bieber Tourmate Weighs In On Paternity Suit

'It wouldn't even be possible for her to get backstage,' Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber recently told the "Today" show that it's impossible he fathered Mariah Yeater's baby, as claimed in a headline-making paternity suit. Why? The minute he finishes a show, he promptly makes his way from the stage to an awaiting car, so there's no time for backstage trysts.

Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, Bieber's onetime tourmate, confirmed the teen star's story.

"It wouldn't even be possible for her to get backstage," he told MTV News on the red carpet at the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York on Monday. "The security is so crazy there, you can't get backstage. And even if you got backstage, first of all, he leaves the show as soon as he's offstage, which is pretty cool. He runs offstage, gets in a car and jets, because the whole city turns into chaos."

Before the My World Tour wrapped up last month, the band experienced that craziness firsthand, likening it to something straight out of the movies. "There's a really cool video of us online getting mobbed at the airport," Saporta recalled. "It's like zombie apocalypse; it's awesome."

Speaking of awesome, 2011 has been a pretty great year for Cobra Starship. Their infectious, Sabi-featuring track "You Make Me Feel" has been burning up radio, but that Bieber tour is pretty much the highlight of the year for Saporta.

"We were playing, like, 50,000-people stadiums," Saporta said of the South American jaunt. "It was insane, and I'm from South America too, so for me, it was especially satisfying. I gotta say, for being the most famous kid in the universe, he's remarkably well-adjusted, and ... there's like 75 people traveling with him. It feels like a family, and it was really nice to be a part of that family for a bit of time."

'Twilight' Trio Talk Sex, Compare Abs On 'MTV First'

For the return of 'Twilight' Tuesdays, we look at the greatest hits from our chat with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

Hey, "Twilight" fans, this one's for you: MTV News is very happy to announce the return of "Twilight" Tuesdays, a weekly column dedicated to anything and everything popping in the world of Bella, Edward and Jacob.

Each week, we'll bring you something new about the films, whether it's via the stars themselves, photos, clips or, even better, something from you, the fans. The next few weeks will be almost entirely focused on the impending release of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," but we'll hopefully break into new, exclusive, undiscovered territory very soon.

First up is a highlight reel from "MTV First: Breaking Dawn," in which Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner let loose with us for a meaty Q&A. There were so many great moments between the three young actors that we decided to put together our favorites for your viewing pleasure.

Kristen Squirms Reliving First MTV Interview
MTV was one of the only outlets allowed access on the set of "Twilight," and we snagged one of the first-ever interviews with superstars-to-be Stewart and Pattinson. Upon hearing that we were going to show Stewart a clip from this interview, in which she and Pattinson joke about what impressed her about him, she had a mini-meltdown, complete with squeals and pacing in front of her chair.

Rob and Kristen Talk Sex Scene
As we book readers well know, there's a pretty intense sex scene in "Breaking Dawn," and everyone wants to know how they shot it for the big-screen adaptation. Well, we asked about it, and Pattinson's responses will likely go down in history as some of his best quotes: "I was sitting there in a little G-string," he said of the flesh-colored undergarment he wore during the filming of the scene, which Stewart confessed she "wasn't too into" and said it required a lot of acting on her part to pretend she was hot for the young man in the "little G-string." "It was like old ham," Pattinson then added, inexplicably. Like we said, history-making comments there

Rob Scoffs At Taylor Ab Comparison
Eventually, the conversation turned to a favorite subject among "Twilight" fans: Pattinson and Lautner's abs. The question was posed to Pattinson about whether he did any prep for his half-naked scenes in "Breaking Dawn," since in the past, we've heard plenty about Lautner's disciplined workouts and dieting. While Pattinson did admit to some working out and not eating candy for a two-week stretch during filming, he was immediately distracted when he saw we had put up a side-by-side photo comparison of the two leading men. "This is so unfair doing a comparison," Pattinson protested. "Everyone says I painted on my abs in ['New Moon'] — I did not! Taylor has his painted on too!" he accused with a laugh. "What?" Lautner responded. "What are you talking about? I don't understand this."

Rob Has Borrowed Kristen's iPod?
During a round of rapid-fire Twitter questions, the gang was asked to reveal the most-played song on his or her iPod. Stewart was slow to respond, so Pattinson said he'd be happy to answer for her, which Stewart didn't seem to think he'd be able to get right. After a bit of whispering and not-so-quiet mumbling, Pattinson announced that Stewart's go-to music is anything by songbird Jenny Lewis (who, for those who don't know, is a former child star whose film classics include "Troop Beverly Hills" and "The Wizard." Add them to your Netflix queue, stat).

What do you think of our favorite "First" moments? What would you like to see on "Twilight" Tuesdays? Hit me up @KaraWarner on Twitter to make your voice heard!

Will Ferrell 'Flattered' By Jay-Z/Kanye 'Paris' Cameo

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 10:49 PM PST

'When I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal,' he tells MTV News of Throne's 'Blades of Glory' sample.

It's one of the biggest — and most inexplicable — hits of 2011, a song so popular that its hook was name-checked during player introductions on Sunday Night Football, so massive that Jay-Z and Kanye West have taken to performing it multiple times per set on their Watch the Throne Tour.

We're talking, of course, about "N---as in Paris," the max-impact Throne single that has become a sensation, thanks in no small part to producer Hit-Boy's bouncing beat, West's pop-cult wordplay ("What's that jacket, Margiela?") and, of course, a pair of oddball samples taken from Will Ferrell's 2007 figure-skating comedy "Blades of Glory."

As you're probably aware, "Paris" kicks off with Ferrell's grizzled Chazz Michael Michaels defiantly declaring, "We're gonna skate to one song and one song only," then really picks up steam mid-song, when (in a move that could alternately be described as "completely inspired" or "completely insane"), Hit-Boy drops the beat and lets the song roll on a second Ferrell sample: " No one knows what it means, but it's provocative ... it gets the people going!"

And, indeed, it has done just that. "Paris" currently sits atop Billboard's Hip-Hop/R&B Charts, dominates urban radio and has received a thunderous response at Throne shows. And, thanks to Ferrell's contributions, it's certainly one of the oddest mainstream hip-hop tracks in recent history too. And if you're wondering how the whole thing came to be, well, you're not the only one: Turns out, Ferrell's pretty mystified by the track too, as he told MTV News in an email Tuesday (November 8).

"Kanye reached out to me and I said, 'Of course,' " Ferrell wrote. "I was completely flattered when they asked if they could sample me into the song ... and when I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal. But I really did like the song."

So much so, in fact, that Ferrell said he's hoping to take the Throne collaboration to the next level — "We were trying to film a piece that they would use on the video boards of their concert, but haven't gotten it together," he wrote — and the whole process has opened his eyes to an entirely new career opportunity: Being the go-to sample guy on the hip hop circuit.

"I think [something from] 'Step Brothers' would be good [to use in a song]," he wrote. "Or the Woody Allen movie I did, 'Melinda and Melinda.' "

Regardless of whether any of those ideas come to fruition, thanks to the "Paris" success, Ferrell can bask in his newfound street cred, which is certainly at an all-time high. And that's saying something for a guy who once starred opposite Andre 3000.

"It makes me feel very good," he wrote. "And completely justified for buying a V-neck sweater made out of nothing but diamonds."

Jay-Z and Kanye West brought their much-heralded Watch the Throne Tour to New York City's Madison Square Garden on Monday night after two shows at New Jersey's IZOD Center over the weekend.

After kicking off the eagerly anticipated jaunt last week in Atlanta, the Throne began their trek north, stopping in North Carolina, and now they'll stay put for one additional show at the Garden on Tuesday night (November 8).

MTV News headed to the show on Monday, where the allure of seeing Jay and Kanye run through their catalog of hits at the World's Most Famous Arena wasn't lost on fans who filed into the newly renovated stadium for a 9:30 p.m. start time. Sticking to the script of their previous shows, the duo opened up with the WTT bonus track "H.A.M," but "Welcome to the Jungle" hit a soft spot when Jay-Z spit his line, "Rest in peace to the leader of the Jackson 5." The reference was especially touching just hours after the guilty verdict in the Michael Jackson manslaughter case was finally passed down.

As expected, Jay and 'Ye performed their #1 single "N---as in Paris" multiple times during the show's final minutes, adding in a mix of Jay-Z's early hits like "Lucifer" and "Money Ain't a Thing," along with Kanye's "Get Em High" and "All Falls Down."

And post-show, fans who spoke to MTV News were still brimming with excitement.

"This is where it all started," said one excited fan, referring to Jay-Z's first hometown stop on the tour. "This is where he's gonna start, this is where he's gonna finish, so this is the best feeling ever. If you're a Jay-Z fan — or anybody's fan for that matter — you've gotta see them in the Garden. There's no other experience."

"It was unreal to watch them together, feeding off each other's chemistry," another fan added, after watching Jay and 'Ye throw it down. "Watching them own the stage like they did — it was ridiculous."

The Throne will perform one additional show at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night before they head to Florida.

Fellow NBA wife and reality TV star tells MTV News she'll be there for Kim through 'every part of it.'

After Kim Kardashian announced her headline-making split from Kris Humphries, it's her friends and family who are helping her get through a tough time. One of those pals, fellow reality star and basketball wife La La Anthony, told MTV News she's just trying to be a supportive friend.

"Of course, I was surprised by the news," Anthony told us Monday night on the red carpet of the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York City. "Anytime someone gets a divorce, it's a difficult time. All I can do is be her friend and support her through every part of it, and that's what I'm doing."

It's been more than a week since Kim announced the breakup but she continues to make news. Over the weekend, the E! star not only visited her ex in Minnesota, but "Saturday Night Live" poked fun at the couple's divorce news.

In a sketch called "Kim's Fairytale Divorce," the Saturday night staple imagined what a special about the split would look like, including an over-the-top divorce preceding with Kim handing off dough to Humphries as he grunts.

The sketch left Kim's sisters LOLing on Twitter. "Ha! I just saw the SNL skit they did and I could not stop laughing.... LOL," Khloé tweeted, with Kourtney adding, "I peed! The @KrisJenner was classic."

Meanwhile, Mama Kardashian explained to "Extra" why Kim visited Kris explaining that she "really needed to talk to him."

"Kim is a hopeless romantic," Jenner said. "So she wants the fairy tale. She wanted to get married and have babies and raise a family and the white picket fence and all that comes with that. She's a really good person with a huge heart. Whatever decisions Kim is making right now, she's a very smart girl and she's gonna do the right thing. All I can do is wrap my arms around her and make sure she's OK."
