It showcases an epic battle between aliens and humans, but it turns out that the biggest winner of the weekend isn't going to be Aaron Eckhart or the extra-terrestrials he faces in "Battle: Los Angeles," but an entirely different, third combatant: the film itself.

Led by an all-star cast headlined by the "Thank You For Smoking" star, "Battle: Los Angeles" topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,417 theaters. The story of a surprise war waged by aliens for control of Earth, the flick should eek out approximately $40 for the weekend and another number one opening for the star of "The Dark Knight" in his first return to big budget action.

The secret to the film's success? Not treating an alien invasion movie like an alien invasion movie, director Jonathan Liebesman told MTV News.

"This is a more down and dirty alien movie," Liebesman said. "This is like if ['Bourne Supremacy' director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It's literally like 'Black Hawk Down,' if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around."

You'd be forgiven, meanwhile, for saying of the second place film, "My, what a big gross you have," as the Brothers Grimm by way of Stephanie Meyer revisionist fairy tale "Red Riding Hood" scared up $5.7 million to claw its way near the top. The Catherine Hardwick directed and Amanda Seyfried starring film may seem to be similar to that little Kristen Stewart movie, but that doesn't mean it's just "Twilight" with a cape, Seyfried told MTV.

"It's a bummer that that's what's happening," Seyfried told us. "I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that's a lot of movies. The truth is, it's an entirely different story."

In third place, last weekend's winner "Rango" managed a very healthy $5.5 million. The Johnny Depp starring flick about a chameleon who finds himself leading a small desert town as sheriff should bring its total to approximately $70 million by weekend's close.

In fourth place, "The Adjustment Bureau" starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt managed a $3.4 million Friday.

The biggest disappointment of the week was "Mars Needs Moms," the newest animated film from Disney. Using motion capture technology and based on a story from Pulitzer Prize winner Berkeley Breathed, the reportedly expensive film managed just $1.8 million Friday and a fifth place finish.

Among other films, "Beastly" scored $1.6 million for a sixth place finish, while "Just Go With It" managed an eighth place finish and $1.2 million. The Adam Sandler led comedy should pass $100 million sometime early next week.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten, "Hall Pass" earned $1.5 million to come in seventh, "The King's Speech" grabbed $1 million to finish ninth, and "Unknown" ran away with $975,000 to land in tenth.

Hard rock super group Slipknot have asked former member Donnie Steele to replace Paul Gray on bass for their upcoming 2011 shows, according to a statement on the band's website.

The 38-year-old Gray, who had been with the band since their inception, died last year (May 24, 2010) from an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl.

"Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family," the band wrote. "Donnie was great friends with Paul and we can't think of a better way to celebrate his memory than with someone who was there with us at the very beginning. The eight of us are looking forward to being onstage again and honoring Paul's legacy with our families in Europe and Brazil this summer."

Known for their ostentatious performances and aggressive musical edge, the mask-wearing members of the Grammy winning band displayed a different side in an emotional press conference the day after Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room, remembering their friend and band mate as "the essence of the band Slipknot," percussionist Shawn Crahan recalled.

"Paul was there from the very, very beginning, and none of us would be on the path that we're on now in life or have the sorts of life that we have without him," he added. "Paul loved the fans. He was kind of the person in the band that really wanted everybody in the band to always get along and just concentrate on the band. He was a really great friend and a really great person. He's going to be sadly missed, and the world is going to be a different place without him."

Among other performances, the band will be performing at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 21.

She's a style maven and a world renowned fashionista. Now former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is finally getting the final compliment for her closets full of high design: a little girl to share them with.

Victoria and her soccer playing husband David Beckham announced that their fourth child will be a girl, according to a report originally on ESPN. Due in January, the child will join older brothers Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz.

"Obviously, we're very lucky to be expecting again, and this is the first time I'm going to say it: It's a little girl," Beckham told assembled Galaxy fans at an event for the Los Angeles based Major League Soccer franchise. "We're still in shock. Obviously, having three boys, you kind of expect another one, so finding out a little girl is in there is surprising, but, obviously, we are over the moon. Our three boys are happy and excited, and Victoria is doing well."

The pair didn't know the sex of the baby until very recently, with Victoria telling reporters in February that she would be happy with a child of either gender.

"We know what to do with boys [and my other children are] excited about having a little brother to teach how to play soccer," she told USA Today at an event to promote her new fashion line. "But, if it's a girl, we'd be over the moon as well."

The former "Posh Spice" and her husband currently live in Beverly Hills, where the 36-year-old David is in the final year of his much criticized five-year contract with the Galaxy. Twice a runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, Beckham became the highest paid player in the league when he moved from Real Madrid to sign his deal in 2007.

The couple married in 1999 after a two year courtship.

Multi-platinum and Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Jewel was involved in a two car collision at approximately 11 AM CT Friday morning (March 11) in Stephenville, Texas, when a fire truck smashed into the passenger side of her vehicle, according to TMZ.

The "Foolish Games" chanteuse, who two months ago revealed she was pregnant with her first child, were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where tests revealed both mother and baby were doing fine.

"Hey everyone-just got released from the ER & my Dr's office- everything is fine-me & the baby r ok- thanx 4 all your thoughts & prayers," Jewel wrote on her official Twitter account Friday evening.

"Dr said no working out- so I'm going to take it easy this weekend. Just a little sore and banged up- but feeling so blessed this morning," she tweeted as follow-up early morning Saturday (March 12).

Pictures of the accident show a severely crumpled and nearly destroyed Cadillac SRX, the nose of the fire truck still wedged into the silver car's frame. The singer credits the car with the fact that she survived.

"1 thing I do know is my car saved my & baby's life-definitely going 2 get another Cadillac SRX!" she tweeted. "It absorbed all the damage & kept me safe!"

Jewel is in the third trimester of her pregnancy, the first child for both the 36-year-old and her rodeo star husband Ty Murray, who married in 2008.

"I have always been a workaholic, so I had to learn how to slow down and take care of myself in a different way," she said in a January interview about the prospect of being a mom. "I'm trying to be in the moment and really enjoy my pregnancy. I feel really lucky."

Jewel is reportedly working on a new collection of children's tunes, a follow-up of sorts to her 2009 LP Lullaby.

Red Letter Media's Mike Stoklasa finishes evisceration of 'Star Wars,' creates 'Half in the Bag' to skewer movies on more regular basis.

His video eviscerations of the "Star Wars" prequels were among last year's most anticipated, widely viewed online videos, garnering millions of views, inspiring new discussions of copyright in the digital age, and making celebrity fans ranging from Simon Pegg to Roger Ebert. But now that Mike Stoklasa, aka Mr. Plinkett, has finished carving up George Lucas — his "Revenge of Nadine: Episode III Review Epilogue" dropped Thursday (March 10) — the Milwaukee based writer/director turned millennial critic is breaking out the entire cutlery set for his next target.

And this time, nobody will be safe, Stoklasa laughed in an interview with MTV News.

Titled "Half in the Bag," Stoklasa and friend Jay Bauman have launched a new online review program which will skewer current Hollywood movies in a more traditional review format, a "mix between 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse' and 'At the Movies,'" Stoklasa revealed in an email conversation. Their first effort, which imagines the pair as VCR repairmen sent to Mr. Plinkett's house, premiered late Friday evening (March 11).

The show is an attempt to cross something like "Siskel and Ebert" with a 80s era sitcom, Stoklasa explained, with the two hosts sitting across from each other while discussing new releases. For Stoklasa, it means that for the first time he'll be lobbing critical bombs in front of the camera, rather than from behind, a switch he said he made, not without some trepidation, to avoid "the same old thing."

"I was a bit concerned with revealing the 'man behind the curtain,', but it's just not in my nature to go on doing the same thing. If I did that people would say 'The Plinkett reviews are getting old and worn out,'" he wrote. "We don't want things to stay the same."

An expansion of and not a replacement for the trademark video stylings of Mr. Plinkett, the program is also an attempt to "make new material for people on a regular basis" while avoiding the labor intensive process inherent in the earlier reviews, Stoklasa wrote.

"I like talking about movies and analyzing them, but sometimes it's fun to deviate into other things and the traditional Mr. Plinkett reviews just take a really long time to make," he wrote. "I will still continue to make the Mr. Plinkett reviews where I do the voice and everything, but we're going to do this too."

But not all will be different, Stoklasa cautioned. Fans of his earlier reviews will see a familiar through-line, he said, as the program will contain cutaways, random sound effects, and even skits, such as a portion of the first review where George Lucas comes to destroy their set.

Of those familiar tropes, perhaps the most familiar will be Plinkett himself, who will appear to audiences in front of the camera played by Rich Evans.

"We toyed with the idea of never showing his face and me dubbing over all of his lines, but it would have been very time consuming to light that for each shot and to have to do all the ADR," Stoklasa wrote. "Plus, I think Rich is funny in the part, he adds a lot to the role and makes it his own. Rich is really great with awkward physical comedy and comes up with a lot of good ideas on set. Hopefully people will appreciate that there is 'Plinkett A' and 'Plinkett B' and to understand that Plinkett A is not going away."

Since the show takes place in the fictional construct of Mr. Plinkett's living room, where the pair are on a never ending quest to fix an old VCR, Stoklasa believes there's room to criticize not just new movies, but any film that Plinkett might have in his expansive video catalogue, meaning that while the first episode centered on new films like "Drive Angry" and "The Adjustment Bureau," older films are not off-limits.

"The format is open to us doing anything," he said. "We'll probably wind up with more current stuff for the primary reviews, but we'll do old B-movies and stuff like that too. We love terrible old B-Movies quite a bit and I have a sick fascination with movies that are so bad they're funny."

For now, "the hope is to do it weekly," Stoklasa wrote. The next episode of "Half in the Bag" premiers early next week.
