Event planners imagine what kind of party they'd throw the superstar.

Justin Bieber is about to reach another milestone in his life: On Tuesday (February 29), the teen star turns 17. Already, he's had hit albums and singles, a world tour and a successful concert documentary, so he definitely has a reason to celebrate. As he gears up for the fun, MTV News asked some party planners to weigh in on what kind of bash they would throw for the pop superstar.

"I think, knowing that he's such a fan of purple, I would create a purple Willy Wonka fantasy party," said Bruce Starr, who works at BMF Media Group in New York. "I think we'd do it in L.A. on a studio lot and have the Oompa Loompas in purple. We'd recreate this extravagant fantasy world."

Starr said he'd have a female DJ on the decks, but also would have some musical surprises up his sleeve. "We'd have a surprise stage, and without telling him, work with his friends and have them do surprise sets for him," he explained. "The party would have just friends and family, about 250 or 300 or 400 people tops — really intimate."

There would even be a fan element to the party. "I think we would do huge screens for all the people who couldn't be there. We'd have surprise music videos from them, and throughout the candy land, there'd be screens with tweets from his fans," he added.

Taylor Choi, event consultant for Gansevoort Hotel Group, explained that she'd have the perfect Big Apple hot spot for the party. "For him, I would do something more fun and exciting," she mused. "I would do more like bowling or video games, some sort of 3-D type party with more technology-type stuff for him."

So, what types of social media would that include? "A social-media kiosk where people can take photos," she explained. "I would do karaoke and do something more fun and interactive. I would have a fun DJ and a fun live performance because a performance would be fun."

As for the venue, Choi said: "If he was in New York, I would throw it in the Gansevoort Park Avenue where we could do a 3-D installation. We can do a performance over the pool. We would deck it out for him with three floors. I'd serve cupcakes, hot dogs, burgers.

"I would have like 200 of his closest friends," she added. "I would definitely do 3-D stuff. He'd have fun with a small group of friends: private, intimate, nothing too crazy. Have his friends perform a song for him."

While it seems these planners would throw elaborate bashes for the star, Bieber recently revealed that he's hoping for a low-key affair.

"I only have, like, four days, so I'm just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] — so just going to mentally prepare and just relax," Bieber explained. "No birthday bash. ... Hopefully my grandparents will be out here, and I'll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake — cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday."

How do you think Justin Bieber should celebrate his 17th birthday? Tell us your ideas below!

Chris Medina Explains Why He Told Fiancee's Story On 'American Idol'

'I'm glad I did it, because the day after it aired, wonderful things started happening,' he tells MTV News.

Last week, when Chris Medina was sent packing on "American Idol," it was a shock to pretty much everyone — except, oddly enough, Medina himself.

"I gave it my all, but, I mean, I'm in a room with 40 phenomenal singers. They all have earned their right to be there. And though I had faith in my talents, just being in that situation, you gotta have consistent, solid performances all the time, and the people there did that," he told MTV News on Monday. "I think I had a really good first audition, a good audition in Vegas and a good audition in my last one — I sang for my life — but there were times in the middle where I was just pretty OK. And I'm not one of those people who's delusional. I left it all on the line. ... Some people had seven solid performances; I had three or four."

If that reaction seems a little strange coming from a former "Idol" contender, well, it's probably because Medina is far from your average pop-star wannabe. Even in the face of overwhelming success, he's remained grounded, thanks in no small part to his fiancée, Juliana, who, as viewers of the show know, suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been cared for by Medina ever since.

"If there's anything I learned from my situation with my fiancée," he said, "it's don't expect that things are going to happen. Just enjoy what is happening, and always do your best. And I did that on 'Idol,' so I'm OK with it."

So no, Medina has no regrets about missing the "Idol" top 24 or really anything he did during his run on the show — and that includes allowing producers to film his and Juliana's story for the show. Though some might have called the move exploitative, Medina, not surprisingly, sees things a little differently.

"I just know that there's people out there who kind of naturally see the bad in every situation, and, to be completely honest, I think at one point in my life, I might have been one of those people," he explained. "But I felt like in this specific situation, when they asked, 'Can we do a story on you and your situation?' The first thing I did was, 'I don't think I want to do that. I'm a little nervous about it. I'm afraid there's going to be people who are going to be saying bad things.'

"But then Juliana's mother and my mother, my family, all kind of got together and [asked], 'What's something that you want to come out of it? Why are you even entertaining the idea?' " he continued. "And I said, 'If I can get her story out there, maybe there's someone that can help out. Maybe there's somebody whose brother went through the same thing that can offer us some kind of advice or a doctor that could be like, "I want to help her, I can help her." ' And, I'm glad I did it, because the day after it aired, wonderful things started happening, for both me and my family."

Like he said, no regrets about his "Idol" past, or his future with his fiancée, for that matter.

"Brain injuries just scoop the life out of you ... but that doesn't necessarily mean you just give up all hope," Medina said. "She's my best friend, and I'm always going to be here for her."

Don't miss "Idol Party Live" at 10 p.m. Thursday on MTV.com following the "American Idol" results show for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke. In the meantime, get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Lady Gaga Producer Calls 'Judas' Playful With A 'Serious Message'

'It's about sometimes not choosing the right choice,' says Fernando Garibay, who has heard second Born This Way single.

Lady Gaga fans are still reveling in the eye candy that is her "Born This Way" video, which dropped on Monday. But they're also eager to hear more songs off the May album release of the same name, and that includes her second single, "Judas."

Fernando Garibay, who co-produced many of the tracks on Born This Way, stopped by MTV News a few hours after the video debuted and dished what the second club banger from the album will sound like.

"Judas is produced by RedOne and Gaga, obviously, and it's a statement about, again I can't speak for her, but what I gather is it's about sometimes not choosing the right choice," he teased, adding, "But you can't deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are."

Like "Born This Way," "Judas" will have fans dancing. And while "Born This Way" harks back to the club tracks of the '90s, Garibay explained that "Judas" is a more traditional Gaga tune.

" 'Judas' is a dance song, definitely," he said. "I think 'Judas' in the traditional RedOne/Gaga vein. It's great because it's a serious message, it's a little playful, but still serious, but still somehow you wind up dancing to it. That's what's great about her music. You know, like, my favorite songs of all time, dance songs, 'Billie Jean,' is a story you wouldn't think of singing but then you wind up dancing and singing the lyrics. I think that's the holy grail of music for me, which is dance."

Gaga has commented on the track in radio interviews, sharing what inspired the song.

"It's about always falling in love with the wrong man over and over again," she said recently. " 'Judas' is a very, very dark song. It's rad."

RedOne has also been keeping fans on their toes about the song, saying, "It's gonna shock. You're gonna be surprised and wanna go crazy."

Are you excited to hear Lady Gaga's next single, "Judas"? Let us know in the comments!

Snoop Dogg Says Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays Just 'A Warm-Up'

Doggumentary album is gonna have 21 songs, and 'it doesn't hurt to give you a couple on a mixtape,' Snoop tells Mixtape Daily.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape: Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays, Vol. 1

Headliners: Snoop Dogg and DJ Skee

Key Cameos: 50 Cent, Pharrell, Tyga, Game and Wiz Khalifa

Essential Info: Snoop Dogg is a benevolent mogul. The veteran rapper is putting the final touches on his forthcoming 11th studio album, Doggumentary, but before the collection arrives he wanted to deliver a teaser to his longtime fans. Hence, Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays, a take on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Fridays series, for which 'Ye dropped a brand new effort each week.

The California rhyme-spitter told Mixtape Daily he culled together the mixtape offering with the help of DJ Skee.

"It's like a warm-up before the album comes out," Snoop explained. "For people to know exactly what you're getting from my album. This album is gonna have 21 songs on it and it doesn't hurt for me to give you a couple on a mixtape, 'cause I'm taking it back to the days of Snoop Dogg when I gave you more for the money.

"When I give you a double-up, you spend 10 [dollars], you get 20 [songs]. That's what you get from me. I don't like trying to go with the way of the [music] industry. The industry will tell you, 'Well, you should try to make an album with 12, 13 songs.' Really, I'm shortchanging my people when I do that. When you buy from Snoop Dogg, you usually get more than what you pay for. When you come see Snoop Dogg perform, you usually get more than what you pay for. That's who I am, that's the brand that I build. I can't allow a label to step in and say who Snoop Dogg should be, 'cause this is what I created."

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 02:33 AM PST

Gaga's latest is full of nods to fashion, film, fine art and the occasional West Texas weirdo.
By James Montgomery

By now, you've had a few hours to digest Lady Gaga's brand-new "Born This Way" video, a starry, swirly, some would say gnarly clip that features plenty of astral afterbirth, a snarling man-zombie and exactly one shimmering unicorn.

So, yes, "BTW" is most definitely an eye-catching, high-concept thing — as Gaga told BBC's Radio 1, it's meant to showcase "the birth of a new race," which doesn't make it all that different from all of her videos, if you think about it.

And, much like her earlier work, "BTW" is also loaded with blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments, carefully constructed odes to fashion, film, fine art and, uh, West Texas weirdos. So, in the same way we broke down her "Telephone" and "Alejandro" clips, we've decided to put "Born This Way" under the microscope, watching (and rewatching) each frame to compile a pop-culture cheat sheet that's alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we're sure there's something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below!)

And so, without further ado, here's our "Born This Way" pop-culture cheat sheet:

Alexander McQueen: The late fashion designer has always been an influence on Gaga (she wore his famous "armadillo heels" in the "Bad Romance" video and one of his creations on the red carpet of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards), and in "Born This Way," her outfit at the beginning of the video — where she's hovering above Earth, giving birth to a starchild (or something) — seems directly influenced by the natural flourishes of McQueen's final collection, which featured feathers, mock scales and faux wings.

Denny Brewer: Deep-fried Texas musician/oddball who, along with his son, plays in the band Refried Ice Cream. In recent weeks, Brewer has risen to fame thanks to his recorded ramblings about alternate dimensions, phase-shifting, lizard people and pomegranates that serve as the through-line to Bright Eyes' The People's Key album. Much of what Gaga declares in her "Manifesto of Mother Monster" is lifted from Brewer's playbook: a "mitosis of the future," a "multiverse" and the constantly changing concepts of "temporal" and "eternal."

H.R. Giger: Swiss-born surrealist painter and sculptor, perhaps best known for designing the terrifying, sexualized beasts in the "Alien" franchise. After Gaga gives birth to her "evil" spawn, he contorts his body in a way that, when coupled with sinewy fabrics, appears to be a direct nod to Giger's chilling work.

Janus: The two-faced Roman god of gates, doorways, beginnings, endings and time. At the very beginning of "Born This Way," Gaga's Mother Monster features two faces, and, given the whole "rebirth" concept behind the video, that seems less than coincidental.

Madonna: By now, you're probably aware that, sonically, "Born This Way" sounds a lot like Madonna's "Express Yourself." So, perhaps as a bit of a joke, Gaga closes "BTW" by mimicking Madge's iconic gap between her two front teeth.

Michael Jackson: As she tries to assure her spot in the upper echelons of pop royalty, Gaga is obviously taking cues from the man who eternally sits on the throne: the late, great King of Pop. At the end of "Born This Way," she pays direct homage to the man, strutting down a dark alleyway, slightly glowing (à la his "Billie Jean" video). Earlier, she also wears a tuxedo, which could be a nod to the cover of MJ's Off the Wall album. Oh, and there's a very definite "Captain EO" feel to the proceedings too.

"Metropolis": A 1927 expressionist film directed by the iconic Fritz Lang, which tells the tale of a dystopian, not-too-distant future in which society is divided into two classes. The opening scenes of "BTW" definitely recall the film, especially the famous scene in which the heroine Maria is cloned by the villainous scientist Rotwang.

"Sin City": Gritty, black-and-white comic series from Frank Miller. Not only does the machine-gun-clutching Gaga remind us of every gun moll in the series, but at the end of the video, when she dances in stark white gloves with tassels, it seems like a direct homage to one of Sin City's most famous denizens: cowgirl stripper Nancy Callahan.

"Superman": Massive 1978 film directed by Richard Donner that tells the origin of one of DC Comics' most iconic characters. In Donner's version, the Man of Steel's home planet of Krypton is made almost entirely of shards of crystals, which also seems to have influenced the production design of "Born This Way."

Surrealism: Populist art movement begun in the 1920s, famous for its use of nonsequiturs and juxtapositions. Famed surrealist painters include Francis Bacon and Salvador Dalí, both of whom were name-checked by Gaga herself as being influences on the "Born This Way" clip.

"Vertigo": Masterful 1958 psychological thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. For reasons not really clear, it's equally masterful main theme, courtesy of Bernard Herrmann, is played over the opening scenes of "Born This Way."

Zombie Boy: Also known as Rick Genest, a model who made the rather, uh, unique decision to cover his entire face (and most of his body) in one large skeleton tattoo, which makes him look very much like, well, a zombie. In recent months, Genest has become a favorite of both Gaga and her stylist, Nicola Formichetti, appearing in a promo clip for the Born This Way album that premiered last month, and, of course, in the "Born This Way" video too.

'Dancing With The Stars' 2011 Cast Revealed

Kirstie Alley, Romeo, Kendra Wilkinson, Sugar Ray Leonard and more eclectic celebs will compete on season 12.
By Kara Warner

It seems like just yesterday that we were awaiting the big "Dancing With the Stars" casting announcement for the popular celebrity dance competition's 11th season, where bold-faced names like Bristol Palin, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and eventual champ Jennifer Grey became even bolder during their time on the show.

Now, just six months later, the famous dance floor has been wiped clean to make way for a whole new crop of aspiring dance champs. Here's a look at the 11 eclectic new contestants signed on for season 12 of "Dancing With the Stars":

Chris Jericho
Jericho, born Christopher Irvine, is very well known to the world of professional wrestling fans. The 40-year-old was the first undisputed champion of the WWE in December 2001 (he beat Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock) but put his career on hold recently to focus more on his other passion project, performing as lead singer of heavy-metal band Fozzy.

Romeo
Although originally signed up to strut his stuff on season two, Romeo was replaced at the last minute by his equally famous poppa, Master P (whose turn on "DWTS" has been touted by many critics and followers as one of the worst in the show's history; his Paso Doble holds the record for the lowest score ever). With the bar set slightly lower than average, the 21-year-old rapper, who once played college basketball for USC, likely hopes to make it farther than his father.

Kendra Wilkinson
The decidedly un-shy, already established reality-TV star Wilkinson is no stranger to performing or baring all in front of audiences. Wilkinson, who got her start as a Playboy model, ventured into television as a part of E!'s "The Girls Next Door" before slightly tempering her party-girl ways to settle down with NFL player Hank Baskett, their domestic bliss being the subject of her current show, "Kendra: Bunny Next Door."

Kirstie Alley
Before she was the subject of her own reality show, "Kirstie Alley's Big Life," first on A&E and now Lifetime, and a Jenny Craig spokeswoman, Alley was known to several generations of TV watchers and filmgoers for her memorable turns on TV shows "Cheers" and "Veronica's Closet" and movies like "Look Who's Talking." The outspoken celeb is a longtime "DWTS" fan, whose entertaining and varied tweets have been featured frequently in our Twitterwood column on MTV Movies Blog.

Wendy Williams
The self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media" made a name for herself as a radio DJ then became a best-selling author and currently hosts her own syndicated daytime talk show called "The Wendy Williams Show." Williams has a knack for asking uncomfortable questions during celebrity interviews and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor. Her talk show is reportedly scheduled to go on hiatus while she competes on the show.

Chelsea Kane
As has been the custom over the course of the past few seasons, the "DWTS" team has welcomed another Disney star into their midst, Chelsea Kane (formerly known as Chelsea Staub, Kane legally changed her professional name back in December). The 22-year-old was a regular on Disney's "JONAS," starring the Jonas Brothers, and currently lends her voice to the character Bea on the animated series "Fish Hooks."

Sugar Ray Leonard
Leonard, a former professional boxer, follows in the footsteps of a slew of former professional athletes who have danced before him. While athletes have been formidable competitors in "DWTS" seasons past, the boxers haven't fared quite as well. The 54-year-old's illustrious career includes winning world titles in five weight divisions, including the welterweight champion of the world, as well as being the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in total purse winnings. Here's hoping Leonard's footwork is more like that of Laila Ali than Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather.

Ralph Macchio
Although he's had a few memorable parts on TV shows like "Entourage" and "Ugly Betty," for a lot of people, Macchio will always and forever be the original "Karate Kid." Sure, Jaden Smith karate-chopped his way to box-office success with his turn in 2010's remake, but Macchio kicked his way into the hearts of teenage girls everywhere with 1984's "The Karate Kid" and subsequent sequels.

Hines Ward
They're certainly not skimping on the athletes this season! Ward joins the cast as one of three professional athletes competing for the famed discoball trophy. The onetime Super Bowl MVP currently plays wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was born in Seoul, South Korea. In September of last year, President Barack Obama appointed him a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Petra Nemcova
This Czechoslovakian beauty is a supermodel with a big heart. The 31-year-old was one of hundreds of thousands of people caught in the devastating South Asian tsunami in 2004, which killed 250,000 people in 14 countries, including Nemcova's boyfriend at the time, Simon Atlee. When Nemcova visited the site of the tsunami several months later, she was unsatisfied with the structure of how charitable donations benefit those living in states of emergency, so she created the Happy Hearts Fund to help children in post-disaster areas in eight countries: Haiti, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Hurricane Katrina-affected areas of the United States.

Mike Catherwood
While most TV watchers are familiar with Dr. Drew from his various VH1 shows, his "Loveline" radio partner, Mike Catherwood, might not be as well-known. Catherwood, also known as Psycho Mike, has co-hosted the syndicated radio show for a year now, following Adam Carolla's exit back in 2005. The muscly radio host -- who also works on Los Angeles' "Kevin & Bean Show" -- recently made a memorable appearance filling in for Regis Philbin on "Live With Regis & Kelly." We'll see if his smooth-talking skills and time in the gym translate to a successful "DWTS" run.

Chris Medina Calls Post-'American Idol' Single 'Heartfelt'

'He was really good in the studio,' producer Rodney Jerkins recalls of recording 'What Are Words.'

While Chris Medina's exit from "American Idol" is still a shock to many fans, the fact that the early favorite has already lined up his first post-"Idol" project (by way of super-producer Rodney Jerkins and the single "What Are Words") should alleviate the burn.

MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with both Medina and Jerkins recently to get the inside scoop on the heartfelt track.

"I always knew who Rodney Jerkins was, but after doing some research, I didn't realize how 'the man' he actually was," Medina explained of his reaction to getting a phone call two days after his unexpected elimination. "I got a call on Friday and then that Monday I recorded," he said. "It was surreal. It was great."

Medina went on to say that while the song isn't technically his style, it's not entirely out of his "wheelhouse."

"The words totally embody what my situation is," he said. "It's heartfelt, it's real, and it was an honor to be asked to put my voice to this wonderful material."

For his part, Jerkins, who was inspired to write the song after seeing Medina's first audition, said the 26-year-old was a total pro during their recording session.

"He was really good in the studio," Jerkins said. "That's always the fearful moment for myself as a producer. The first time you work with a new artist [you wonder], 'What is it going to sound like when you get in the studio?'

"[Medina] came in here and he listened to it one time down and then he was like, 'I think I got it.' He started singing it for us in the room, and we were just floored," Jerkins recalled. "Like, 'Wow,' he learned it that fast. I'm like, 'OK, it's time for you to get in the booth.' He was great."

Regarding the higher vocals Medina uses in the track, Jerkins said that is all about his technique of challenging his artists.

"A lot of technology has made it where we don't push the artist like we used to," he said. "I'm a '90s guy. I come from the school of the '90s, where you didn't have Auto-Tune, we didn't have the tricks of technology. You had to get in there and work the artist and get the best out of them, and that's what we did."

NEW YORK -- Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video premiered on Monday (February 28), and, as many of her videos tend to do, it created some confusion among viewers. MTV News asked fans in New York City's Times Square for their reactions.

"It looks like she's giving birth to something," Angela Foreman suggested.

"She looks really slimy!" Amanda Russ squealed.

Another fan, Katie Doig, made the same observation as several of those we spoke to: "She's so bizarre, but she's great!"

The video features Gaga taking on various identities, both "good" and "evil," and is filled with dancing, kaleidoscopic imagery, protruding facial and shoulder horns and, of course, fashionably loud costumes and makeup.

"She looks strange," Foreman said about one scene. "Like a devil, very demonic."

"I don't understand [but] it's typical from Lady Gaga," Guillaume Lachaud said about the unusual looks, and then added, "very beautiful, very sexy."

Gaga also is seen performing intricate moves (choreographed by Laurieann Gibson) to the "Born This Way" chorus, while dressed in a black bra and bikini; her body is especially exposed and toned in this clip.

"She's such a good dancer!" Doig exclaimed.

As for the tuxedo-wearing skeleton sequence, it reminded some fans of another music-video pop icon.

"She looks like Michael Jackson!" Lachaud smiled. "Very 'Thriller,' " Foreman added.

In spite of their baffled expressions, all agreed that the video held up against her previous work.

"I think she looks great," Andrew Janda complimented. "It's a nice video."

"She's so out there," Doig laughed. "But it's so good, like, only Lady Gaga can do it."

Britney Spears is a month away from the release of Femme Fatale, and nearly every day, she's teasing fans with samples of some of the songs on the album, including the latest, her song with will.i.am, "The Big Fat Bass." Now, longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins is opening up about hitting the studio with Spears.

"Britney's always great to work with. I've worked with Britney for 12, 13 years now," he told MTV News. "It's always great to work with someone when you work with someone time and time again; it's always great, and it always gets better. And just to see her evolve as an artist, it's an amazing, amazing thing."

Jerkins worked with Spears in the past on "Overprotected (Darkchild Remix)" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" in the early 2000s, as well as her leaked version of Lady Gaga's "Telephone," when she was recording Circus.

This time around, he said Spears knows exactly what she wants musically on the album. "She was very hands-on. She had a lot of ideas for me," he said. "She's great. She gets it. She is a top-notch veteran pro at this now."

She might be getting some help from Jerkins, but Dr. Luke and Max Martin are executive-producing the album, and Jerkins had nothing but the best to say about the production team. "I never spoke to them, [but] those guys are just great, and the stuff that they've been doing is just really, really great stuff," he said. "I'm sure with their hands on it, it's great."

Spears herself has described the album as "moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy," hinting that many of the songs will be uptempo, and Jerkins noted that the songs he's been writing for her have certainly fit that label. "I know the songs that I do are uptempo," he said. "The stuff I've done, I think, will kind of shock people. I got a chance to go out my box a little bit too. She's great. Britney's just awesome."

Dr. Dre Digs Through MTV News Archives For 'I Need A Doctor' Video

Dre's camp hit us up for footage of the hip-hop legend, including studio time with Eminem and a 'California Love' set visit.

Dr. Dre's résumé was on full display in the video for "I Need a Doctor," as montages of his time with N.W.A, Death Row and Aftermath were well represented.

While the video was being put together, members of Dre's camp contacted MTV News to secure footage of the producer over the years. Here, we identify the three clips that were used, from him lounging poolside in Los Angeles to making music with Eminem to kicking it with Tupac Shakur on the set of "California Love."

In the Studio With Shady
"I got the album. Nobody else does," Eminem told MTV Radio prior to the release of Dre's 2001. "It's hot, man, it's hot. All I can say is -- naturally, I'm gonna sound biased, pluggin' his album -- the album is incredible and anyone who doubted Dre, all you're gonna do is listen to the album and just be like, 'Dre is back.' "

N.W.A Pool Party
"Me and [Ice] Cube have been talking for the last two weeks about doing an N.W.A album, and I'm really into it," Dre told MTV News in 1999 about a potential reunion. "He seems motivated. We talked to [MC] Ren. Snoop would be the fourth member of the group. I think it would be a hot project. Myself, Cube, Ren and Snoop would be incredible.

"We're gonna call the album Not Those N---az Again," he added, "if and when it happens."

"California Love" Set Visit
"Tupac was prolific from the time that he began writing, which was probably about 6 years old," Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, told MTV News five years after the rapper's death. "As long as there are unreleased Tupac songs, there will be more albums. He didn't change and start to be prolific, change and start to be good. Before he was murdered, he did a lot with his time and his life."

Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' Producer 'Blown Away' By Video

Fernando Garibay marvels to MTV News at how Gaga has combined 'the imagery, the dance' and the song's message.

On Monday (February 28), Lady Gaga released the video for "Born This Way." In the Nick Knight-directed clip, she explores a new life form that doesn't judge and certainly doesn't hate. Full of trippy alien-birth scenes, many costume changes and even an appearance by a unicorn, the video is Gaga's "manifesto" on embracing people of all types.

The video — styled by Nicola Formichetti and choreographed by Laurieann Gibson — is essentially a visual representation of Gaga's dance anthem about celebrating our differences. The song was co-produced by Gaga, White Shadow and Fernando Garibay, and Garibay stopped by the MTV News offices on Monday afternoon to talk about the new clip.

"Well, I've seen pieces. We were privy to watching her make the video and stuff, and as we were watching her do the choreography and everything, we were just blown away, of course," he said. "It's amazing. Her talent, I mean, she's so talented, but in combining the imagery, the dance and how it's expressed with the song is truly amazing."

Garibay was so "blown away" he reiterated that he was still processing the dark, rainbow-colored clip. "I'm still blown away by it. I saw it this morning and I was like, 'Wow.' "

Gaga seems to push the boundaries with each video, redefining what it means to be a pop star. And according to Garibay, that's just Gaga.

"I can't really speak for her but what I've noticed is, yeah, she's extremely conscious of these things," he explained. "You have to be for that ... level of artistic expression; you really have to know yourself and be confident of the message you're going to portray, and it's very genuine to her."

Why Is Britney Spears Lying Low Before Her Album Release?

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 01:27 AM PST

She's released a single, a video and teasers of Femme Fatale, but Spears herself has been holding off on public appearances.

On Friday, Britney Spears took another teasingly small step in promoting her upcoming Femme Fatale album, releasing a video in which she announced that she'll perform on "Good Morning America" on March 29, the day the LP drops.

The short video clip temporarily calmed the increasingly anxious Britney fans, who had been wondering, "Where is Britney?" It's been six weeks since first single "Hold It Against Me" was released. Since then, Britney has hosted a Q&A session with fans on Twitter and premiered the song's video on MTV, but she's been largely missing from the public eye.

We know the pop princess is still busy putting the finishing touches to her album — she tweeted a picture of her and producer will.i.am at the recording studio recently — but it does strike us as strange that a mere month away from the album release, Britney has not done a single promotional interview or live performance.

In the months before releasing her last album, Circus, Brit had appeared at theVMAs and onstage at Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour, performed on the British "X Factor" and shows in France and Germany, and aired the revealing documentary "Britney: For the Record" on MTV.

So, why the relative silence this time around? Is Britney being shy, or maintaining an air of mystery until closer to the big reveal of her album?

"The girl's coming back, and her music's doing well," PR expert Howard Bragman told MTV News. "Coming back is a hard thing to do, and when you've been in the spotlight as long as Britney Spears has been, it's hard to maintain that. The fact that she's still relevant musically is quite a feat."

While Lady Gaga has performed on the Grammys and made appearances on "60 Minutes," "The Tonight Show" and "Good Morning America" since releasing "Born This Way," Bragman cautioned against comparing Brit and Gaga.

"Public relations, when done well, is not one size fits all," Bragman explained. "You've got to know who you're working with and what their DNA in the public eye is, and everybody has a different DNA in the public eye."

Perhaps Britney, now into the 13th year of her career, has decided that she doesn't have to go crazy working the promotional circuit, especially since she is a mother of two young boys. Unlike Lady Gaga and other relatively new pop stars like Katy Perry or Ke$ha, Spears has been there, done that and is no longer so hungry for success. She did her time on the nonstop promo circuit back in her ... Baby One More Time and In the Zone days, and maybe she's content to let the music speak for itself now.

Or perhaps the worrying fans have jumped the gun, and her team is about to surprise us all with a slew of appearances and performances. All we know for sure is that, promotion or no promotion, Britney is still very capable of keeping us intrigued.

Oscars 2011 Superlatives Go To Kirk Douglas, Christian Bale, More

Really, how else could we honor 'He Doesn't Own a Shirt'?
By Eric Ditzian

The stage has gone quiet at the Kodak Theatre. The celebs have all gone home. Everyone is heavy-lidded and hazily recollecting the winners and losers at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday. Along those lines, it's time for MTV News to fight off the sleepiness, down some caffeine and dole out some Oscar superlatives.

Best Attempt to Make the Show Run Long
Kirk Douglas' assigned task was to hand out the Best Supporting Actress award, but when the 94-year-old actor finally reached the microphone, he was in no hurry to cede the spotlight. Douglas joked with James Franco, flirted with Anne Hathaway, and made random references to laughing Australians and austere Brits. It was touching and awkward and utterly memorable. And it felt like it lasted 15 minutes.

Most Surprisingly Great Speech
This one is a tie between Christian Bale (Supporting Actor) and "King's Speech" writer David Seidler (Original Screenplay). Bale surprised even himself when he fought off tears while thanking his wife and daughter. Seidler, meanwhile, happily acknowledged being the oldest person ever to win Original Screenplay; not only is he a proud late-bloomer, he's a shining and articulate example of the ways in which a person can overcome a stutter.

Strangest Standing Ovation
The audience stood and applauded for everyone from Douglas to Eli Wallach. Hollywood legends, all. But everyone in the Kodak also got to their feet for Billy Crystal. Sure, he's been a damn fine Oscar host in years past, and who doesn't love "When Harry Met Sally...," but a standing O for Crystal just seemed weird.

Most Welcome Wins
While Christopher Nolan got screwed out of a directing nomination, he had to be one of the happiest cats at the show: "Inception" tied "The King's Speech" for most wins with four, including Visual Effects and Cinematography.

Most Gratuitous Use of Taylor Lautner's Abs
Hey, if you can't get any of the "Twilight" cast to show up to the Oscars, why not whip up a viral-video-ready mash-up? The Auto-Tuned faux musical number, "He Doesn't Own a Shirt," was not only a chance to see Robert Pattinson "sing," but it gave the Academy's millions of viewers an opportunity to gawk at Lautner's midsection.

Most Shameless Use of Prepared Text
There's nothing wrong with pulling out a scrap of paper while up on stage, Oscar in hand. Imagine your nerves? Yet after winning Costume Design for her work on "Alice in Wonderland," Colleen Atwood — who'd won two previous Oscars — buried her head in a prepared speech and talked as if she were delivering an elementary school book report rather than a speech during Hollywood's most glamorous night.

Performance Most in Need of Auto-Tune
Gwyneth Paltrow has been wowing us on "Glee" and simply killed it alongside Cee Lo at the Grammys earlier this month, but we're not gonna lie: Paltrow's take on "Coming Home" on Sunday was not her finest live performance.

Saddest "In Memoriam" Snub
Corey Haim failed to get a posthumous mention at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, leading his buddy Corey Feldman to lament, "We have become used to not being honored by our peers in the industry." Alas, Haim was once again snubbed, failing to make it into a video package honoring the likes of Lena Horne and Leslie Nielsen.

Lady Gaga Says 'Born This Way' Video Shows 'The Birth Of A New Race'

Singer says the Nick Knight-directed clip was inspired by surrealist painters Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon.

Lady Gaga is known to put a lot of thought into everything from her performance art to her over-the-top outfits and everything in between. Her brand-new video for "Born This Way" is no exception. Shortly before its premiere on Monday (February 28), the pop titan called into BBC's Radio 1 to dish a few details about the seven-minute clip.

"It's the story about the birth of a new race," the pop star told DJ Greg James. "A race that bears no prejudice and a race thats primary sort of ambition in life is to inspire unity and togetherness."

Gaga also said she was "very proud" of the clip, admitting that her team collectively worked to breathe life into her concept. "I had an absolutely sublime time working on it," the singer said. "I actually did it with a U.K. filmmaker and very famous fashion photographer Nick Knight. I worked on it with him. I wrote the script for the video and the concept, and between himself and Laurieann Gibson, my choreographer, we really brought the story to life."

While many have pointed out that "Born This Way" is reminiscent of Madonna's 1989 classic "Express Yourself," Gaga was the first to admit that the clip was inspired by a few other creative greats. "It's very inspired by, especially in the beginning, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon, the surrealist painters," she said.

Not only did Mother Monster stress the clip's symbolism and visuals, but the songstress revealed that she wanted to make a video that would really show what was going on in her head while writing the celebratory '90s-esque dance tune. "The song is very meaningful to me, so I wanted to make something that would really show what was going on in my head when I wrote 'Born This Way.' "

Hours before the premiere, Gaga took to Twitter to share a mostly black-and-white video still from the anticipated clip, which depicts an evil Gaga pulling a gun out from her thigh area.

Lloyd Taps Lil Wayne, Andre 3000 For New Tune

Five years ago, Lloyd scored a hit with "You," a swooning, midtempo track from his sophomore effort, Street Love, that featured Lil Wayne.

For the remix of that tune, the then-Murder Inc. Records artist (Ja Rule, Ashanti) recruited Nas and Outkast's Andre 3000, the latter of whom delivered a poetic verse reminding fans of his MC pedigree.

Now, it looks like Lloyd has locked down both Wayne and Andre again for a track called "Miss That Pu---" that will be featured on his forthcoming album, King of Hearts.

"I liked the way it used to be," the R&B singer told Vibe magazine about the theme of the racy tongue-in-cheek number, for which his guest rappers have yet to deliver their verses.

King of Hearts, which is due out April 19, will be Lloyd's first album since he signed a deal with Interscope Records.

Lloyd, who is working closely with producer Polow Da Don (Fergie, Usher, Keri Hilson) on the project, has gone on record saying that they are making music that's comparable to some of the greatest producer/singer combinations of all time.

"In my opinion, and this is a bold statement, but it's like Michael [Jackson] and Quincy [Jones], it's like Justin [Timberlake] and Timbaland, Usher and Jermaine [Dupri]," Lloyd told MTV News last year. "It's that consistency that you can only find from really finding the right chemistry with the right person. As an artist, I can speak for everyone when I say chemistry is a big, big part of success."

Tween star's second single premieres on 'On-Air With Ryan Seacrest.'

After temporarily taking over the globe (and probably inducing some permanent neck problems) with her chart-smashing "Whip My Hair," pint-size prodigy Willow Smith is back in action with her new electro-pop banger "21st Century Girl."

The 10-year-old superstar premiered the track on Monday morning (February 28) on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, where it was announced that the song will be available exclusively on iTunes starting Tuesday.

The song is as current as they come — she sounds like a fusion of Ke$ha and Rihanna. Willow celebrates being a girl of the moment, all the while backed by a hyper-dancey beat. "The rules don't own me/ I'm living life on the edge," the singer coos.

Smith will also be performing the track, produced by Twin and Alke, on Tuesday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." All this news comes on the heels of Smith's newly announced addition to 13 U.K. dates on Justin Bieber's journey across the pond with his super-successful My World Tour.

The young talent may be relatively new to the music scene (and the world in general), but her work ethic is inarguably beyond her years.

"It felt like all the hard work paid off, mostly that," Willow told MTV News last October about the success of her first single. "Like all the hard work that I've done, like recording 'Whip My Hair' — it's paid off."

Willow has also recently hinted at an upcoming album, tweeting, "Are you excited for my album!? It's coming soon..... VERY soon!!" Although there's no official release date for the LP, a video for Smith's new single is said to be coming out shortly.

How Do Oscar Hosts James Franco, Anne Hathaway Stack Up?

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 11:08 PM PST

Franco's 'distracted' delivery and Anne's 'charming' turn has drawn inevitable comparisons to past emcees like Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.
By Eric Ditzian

In the wake of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' effort to infuse some youthful vitality into Sunday's Oscar ceremony by tapping James Franco and Anne Hathaway to emcee the event, positive praise for the hosts' joint performance has been hard to find.

The New York Times called Hathaway "charming and charismatic" but said Franco came off "a little distracted and even blasé" and that "together they had an odd absence of chemistry." The Washington Post declared that while Hathaway "worked her derriere off," Franco seemed "sort of heavy-lidded and smirky." And USA Today simply said Franco appeared to be "preparing for a remake of 'Dazed and Confused.' "

A match made in awards-season heaven these two certainly were not, and early ratings numbers have the show's audience declining 7 percent from last year (though still higher than 2008 and 2009). At the very least, Franco and Hathaway were likeable throughout, excelling in their pre-taped segments and, if anything, suffering from weak writing during their live, scripted banter.

Last year's hosts, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, by contrast, were nearly universally lauded. The Los Angeles Times called them "the best hosts the show has had in years." The veteran duo's jokes were hardly Ricky Gervais-edgy, but Hollywood doesn't always have the best sense of humor about itself. They zinged Meryl Streep ("[She] holds the most nominations for any actor," Martin said. "Or, as I like to think of it, the most losses"); "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" (saying that it "lived up to its video game"); and didn't shy away from some entertaining presenter intros ("He directed 'A Single Man,' she weighs a single pound: Tom Ford and Sarah Jessica Parker").

"Baldwin and Steve Martin proved to be classy and quippy throughout the night, very piece-of-cake — not that anyone expected otherwise," Hank Stuever wrote in The Washington Post last March.

In 2009, host Hugh Jackman's bravura opening musical number was enough to assure happy memories, even two years later, of the actor's time on the Oscar stage. As New York magazine put it at the time, "Hugh Jackman saves the Oscars!"

On Sunday night, there actually seemed to be lingering sadness that Jackman didn't reunite with Hathaway — after their unexpectedly funny "Frost/Nixon" duet in '09 — for another satirical tune. Hathaway was left to sing by herself, and it just wasn't the same. Yet here's the thing: Jackman hardly knocked it out of the park after his opening shtick; it's interesting what people end up remembering after the show's over. In some sort of backhanded compliment in '09, the New York Times said, "Hugh Jackman was a shrewd, even thrifty choice for a recession-era Oscar night — the hosting equivalent of a value meal."

A similar critical shrug greeted Jon Stewart in 2008, after he and his team rushed to prep an act in the wake of the writers' strike. Variety argued that the comedian "played it pretty safe" but generally "earned his keep by maintaining a playful, irreverent tone throughout the night." That was about as positive as the reviews got, with The Washington Post on the other end of the spectrum saying, he "did only a fair-to-middling job, mostly middling."

Hosting the Oscars, then, is a truly thankless task. And perhaps an explanation for Franco's sleepy performance can be found in the advice Stewart jokingly gave him on "The Daily Show" a few weeks ago.

"Go at it with the attitude that you're above it all, with an ironic detachment bordering on contempt," Stewart told Franco. "They will eat it up." What did you think of Anne and James as Oscar hosts? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Video Premieres

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 09:21 AM PST

The seven-minute clip shows a Gaga ready to create new worlds to dominate.
By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga
Photo: Getty Images

She's already accomplished pretty much everything on this astral plane — you know, emerging from swimming pools while flanked by Great Danes, murdering her boyfriend, escaping from prison, offending the Catholic church. So, in her new video for "Born This Way," it sort of makes sense that Lady Gaga has taken her talents to an entirely new dimension: a "multiverse" of starry space births and snarling specters, new life forms and centuries-old demons. And sparkly unicorns. You can't forget about them.

So, yes, "Born This Way" (which premiered on Monday, February 28) is quite the spectacle. Part space odyssey, part Creationist yarn, it involves the formation of not just an entirely new universe, but an entirely new race of humanity, too. It sort of makes sense, it sort of doesn't, but that 100 percent doesn't really matter much. This is Gaga at her most fabulous, her most out-there, her most, well, Gaga.

Beginning with a long voiceover (the "Manifesto of Mother Monster," as Gaga puts it) that drops phrases like "the mitosis of the future" and "the eternal mother hovered in the multiverse" like they're practically weightless, "Born This Way" stretches a tale of astral rebirth — which appears to be a central theme of the Born This Way album — over seven minutes, recalling everything from the early "Superman" films to the late Alexander McQueen's final collection, doing so effortlessly and oh-so-seriously, in the way we've come to expect from Gaga.

There is haute couture and barely there underwear, a guest appearance by the so-called "Zombie Boy" who showed up in an earlier clip, a whole lot of oozing afterbirth, some fierce dance moves and even a bit of gunplay. The basic premise seems to be good vs. evil, but again, that's entirely up to your interpretation. Director Nick Knight fills each frame with shades of dark and light, coloring the voids of this new world with his fashion-photographer's eye. Gaga plays it straight, even when she's delivering a whitechocolatespaceegg (shout out to Liz Phair!) while hovering above planet Earth.

It's part fantasy, part hopeful reality. It's about the future and the past (especially at clip's end, when Gaga sports Madonna's near-trademarked tooth gap), but really, all of that pales in comparison to the sheer spectacle of the thing. And that sort of makes sense, because after thoroughly dominating this world, with "Born This Way," Lady Gaga seems content to create brand-new worlds to tower over. Welcome your new overlord.

What do you think the "Born This Way" video means? Share your interpretations in the comments!

Will Ferrell 'A Sweetheart' On 'The Office' Set, Rainn Wilson Says

Even if Will Ferrell doesn't join "The Office" as a permanent castmember, his stint as a Dunder Mifflin branch manager already seems to have made an impact on the cast. Rainn Wilson confirmed the nature of Ferrell's performance in the NBC series, which will soon see its figurehead, Steve Carell, depart, but Wilson also seemed a little starstruck.

"We've been doing a ton with Will Ferrell, and it is so cool," Wilson told MTV News on Saturday night at the Independent Spirit Awards. "I just keep thinking, 'I'm acting with Will Ferrell! This is so awesome!' And he's the nicest guy: just a sweetheart and so much fun."

Carell will leave a Michael Scott-sized hole when he exits the show at the end of the season, and Ferrell wanted to be a part of his "Anchorman" co-star's final performances so much that he requested the part himself. His four-episode arc won't install his character as the new man in charge, but it will showcase an epic fail on Scott's part as Ferrell's character asserts himself.

"He is the new manager that Michael Scott has brought in to replace him, but we kind of swiftly realize that that's a terrible idea. Terrible," Wilson said.

For now, exactly what Ferrell has been doing to warrant such reviews and possibly make Michael Scott look like a good management choice by comparison remains largely a mystery. More guest stars are expected to show up as Carell prepares to dedicate more of his life to making films, but it will be hard for anyone to stand toe-to-toe with Ferrell's comedic talents.

Ferrell's effect on Wilson, meanwhile, should at least be potent enough to carry Wilson's character (Dwight) well into the post-Scott era, however long that turns out to be. Whether a new actor emerges to take control of the company or one of the show's other stars rises to the position, having the man who played Ron Burgundy in the same room as Carell for a while seems to be good for morale.

Who do you think should play Michael Scott's replacement? Tell us below!
