With the debut of the Foo Fighters' "Rope" video just a day away — Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, just in case you weren't paying attention — the band have already given fans a sneak peek and let it be known that the overall feel of the clip is "claustrophobic," drawing influence from the band's cramped rehearsal space and the overall feel of their upcoming album, Wasting Light.

But those aren't the only bits of information the band let slip: Director and Foo frontman Dave Grohl is willing to pull the curtain back on the "Rope" video's key scene ... one that only further illustrates that creeping, claustrophobic feel.

"We shot the video ... in a big soundstage in Los Angeles. And we had to build this cube out of fabric and wood for the band to play within, and it's lit from outside," he explained. "And then, there's a part in the video where it's actually revealed that we're inside this weird white cube. At first it just seems like we're in this glowing white room from within, and then towards the end, the big reveal is we're in this room, which is within a massive room."

And though Grohl was quick to downplay his role as director on "Rope," his bandmates were equally quick to sing his praises, not so much as a keen visionary, but as a guy who knows the importance of a good dressing room. And that's pretty key, if you think about it.

"You know what was cool about that video? We all had our own dressing rooms," drummer Taylor Hawkins laughed. "I was like, 'I can get used to this!' "

"The next [video], I think it's going to be, like, 'The Foo Fighters' Dressing Room' and then 'Taylor Hawkins' Dressing Room,' " Grohl shot back. "I think that's going to happen."

The Foo Fighters' "Rope" video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan's house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions via Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos).

Biggie, 14 Years Later: Jadakiss Recalls His B.I.G. Birthday Bash

On the anniversary of the Notorious B.I.G.'s death, the LOX rapper remembers how much it meant to have Biggie at his party.

For an upstart Yonkers MC, having the "King of New York" at your birthday party is worth more than a guest verse on a song.

And for Jadakiss, then a rookie sensation as a part of the LOX on Bad Boy Records, he remembers vividly the night the Notorious B.I.G. graced his bash with his presence. It took all of the rapper's mettle to muscle up the nerve to even ask Biggie, his labelmate, to come to the party.

"We were still new at Bad Boy, so we used to play our part," 'Kiss told MTV News, sharing his fondest memory of the Brooklyn lyricist on the 14-year anniversary of his death. "We were real humble. We wouldn't ask for too much or none of that. But I remember thinking I needed Big to come to my birthday party. I was having my birthday party uptown at a spot called Mo Better. When the moment was right, I was like, 'Yo, Big, I'm having a birthday this and that, think you could come through for me? Come through right quick?'

"That took all, for me to build up that energy to ask. It was amazing," Jada recalled, laughing at the memory. "And he was like, 'When?' I said, 'Tomorrow.' He said, 'Yeah, I'mma be there and chill with you.' "

'Kiss was nervous, though, and he kept the invite on the hush. Then Big and Lil' Cease pulled up to the party in a Lexus truck.

"He chilled with me all night, popping bottles, chilling. I said, 'This is amazing.' The points I scored with Y.O. that night was incredible," he said of gaining hometown respect.

"Dudes was coming up to him, amazed that it was him. He was passing out champagne and cigars," 'Kiss added. "I said, 'I'm the man right now. I got Big at my party. I'm chilling.' "

Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV's Musical March Madness Selection

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:52 AM PST

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band's chances of busting the bracket.
By James Montgomery

Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim.

As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket, the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn't matter that I hadn't figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they'd get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn't have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did.

As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided "You know what? People should vote on this!" — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria, too. So, really, everybody won.

Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined.

So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here's my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year's MMM:

The #1 Seeds
The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1's to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds:

» Foo Fighters
» 30 Seconds to Mars
» Linkin Park
» My Chemical Romance
» Arcade Fire
» Vampire Weekend
» Muse
» The Black Keys
» Blink-182
» Radiohead
» Coldplay
» Mumford & Sons

The Foos have a hotly anticipated album coming down the pipeline, as does Coldplay. Are expectations enough to make them #1's? Or will the committee recognize the breakout success of the Black Keys, Muse and Mumford? Does a #1 album and a shocking Grammy win earn the Arcade Fire a top seed? Linkin Park and MCR both scuffed a bit with their latest albums, but does that matter, especially since they're both legacy acts with loyal fanbases (and, in the case of My Chem, are tournament-tested)? And will the committee ignore the fact that, by most accounts, Radiohead's latest was a bit of a letdown or that Blink-182 may never actually release their new album? As you can see, there are still plenty of questions left to be answered.

The Old Guard
Legacy acts with something left in the tank. In 2010, time-tested faves like Slipknot, the White Stripes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Pearl Jam, U2 and the Dave Matthews Band all got invites to the big dance based largely on reputation alone (just think of them as the Dukes or Kansases of MMM). Of course, nearly all of them got knocked off in the first round, which means that this time around, reputation isn't going to be enough to punch their tickets. Shoot, some of these acts aren't even around anymore, which means that some deck-shuffling is in order. Here are the established acts that are still fighting for their tournament lives:

» Green Day
» Dave Matthews Band
» U2
» Red Hot Chili Peppers
» Rage Against the Machine
» Kid Rock
» Pearl Jam
» R.E.M.

Some (like the Chili Peppers and U2) have announced new albums this year, while others (like DMB) are planning to take 2011 off entirely. Still, whatever their status may be, the old guard remain forces at the cash registers and on radio, even if their latest albums didn't exactly light the world on fire. And ignoring that entirely just isn't possible. So how does the committee decide which make the field of 64? Good question. I'm still trying to figure out the answer.

The New Blood
Upset-minded young guns. The 2010 MMM featured up-and-coming acts like the Young Veins, 3OH!3, Owl City and MGMT. One year later, none of them are even on the radar. Picking new bands for MMM is always a challenge, though in 2011, there seem to be a handful who have all but secured their spots in the tournament, thanks to their breakout successes. I'm talking about the likes of:

» Mumford & Sons
» Florence and the Machine
» The Black Keys
» Cage the Elephant
» Sleigh Bells
» Adele

If the tournament started today, all of the above have been in (and some may even earn high seeds). But do any of them have enough to actually win the tournament? We'll just have to wait and see.

The Bracket Busters
Bands with solid, if not spectacular, résumés (weak out-of-conference schedules, etc.). Last year, this included eventual champs Coheed and Cambria, Final Four acts like Tokio Hotel, Elite Eight bands like Panic! at the Disco and Owl City, and even Patrick Stump, who rumbled all the way to the Sweet 16. In other words, the 2011 champion could very well come from this group. Here's my list of under-the-radar threats:

» Panic! (once again)
» Weezer
» The Decemberists
» Cake
» Paramore
» Avril Lavigne
» Crystal Bowersox
» Adam Lambert
» Death Cab for Cutie
» All Time Low

Two of the above — Cake and the Decemberists — have recent #1 debuts under their belts, while others have new albums on the horizon (DCFC, ATL, Avril). Others, like Bowersox and Lambert (who made the Sweet 16 last year), command insane fanbases, which make them dangerous on any day. Lavigne and ATL still have some work to do, but I'd consider all of the acts I just mentioned as safe for now.

The Bubble Bands
On-the-verge acts that need a little help to make it in. Maybe they win their conference championship, or maybe they PayPal the selection committee some cash, but these are the bands on the brink. In 2010, that included Panic! (no new album or single), the Gaslight Anthem (up-and-comers just learning to play together) and Coheed (largely ignored by mainstream radio). Most of those bands managed to do quite well in the tournament, while others, like Hollywood Undead, Lil Wayne, Them Crooked Vultures and the National, all flamed out in the tournament's opening round. Somewhat fittingly, it's a real feast-or-famine type of thing. Here's my updated list of bubble bands:

» Cobra Starship
» Ke$ha
» Tokio Hotel
» MGMT
» Train
» Adele
» Bret Michaels
» Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
» Taylor Swift

Right off the bat, neither Ke$ha nor Swift really rock (though Ke$h does use Jack Daniels as mouthwash), which makes them long shots. Tokio Hotel have done next to nothing since last year's tournament, but was their success enough to earn them a spot this year? Bret Michaels is basically indestructible at this point, so I'd consider him a lock. Cobra Starship are largely dormant but command a big enough fanbase to warrant consideration. MGMT's last album stiffed in spectacular fashion, which places them squarely on the soapy surface of the bubble.

So, will your favorite band make the cut for the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament? As you can see, the Selection Committee still has plenty of work to do — which means that, between now and Monday, I'll be burning the midnight oil, busting out the brackets and then re-busting them once again. It'll be a chore, but I bet it will be worth it. And I hope you'll be along for the ride. Your band needs you, after all.

MTV's 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act makes the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it's gonna be a war.

Mike Bigga Makes His 'Voice' Heard On New <i>Pledge</i> LP

MC formerly known as Killer Mike tells Mixtape Daily his upcoming PL3DGE corrals 'emotions' of Americans mid-recession.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Indie LP: PL3DGE

Headliner: Mike Bigga p.k.a. Killer Mike

Key cameos: T.I., Young Jeezy, Twista and Gucci Mane

Essential info: Killer Mike is as imposing vocally as he is physically, from his riotous verses on "Pressure" to his outspoken (and instructional) social commentary. But when the Atlanta rapper decided to put together the third volume of his Pledge series, he decided he needed to make a change.

According to Mike, it didn't matter how loud he said something if listeners decided he was yelling at them instead of raging with them. So for "Burn," a smoldering call-of-arms cut, he learned less could mean much, much more.

"When I went into Pledge III, I knew what I was doing on Pledge I was right, but I knew I needed to cut the amount of songs down," Mike told Mixtape Daily. "So on, Pledge II, I cut the amount of songs down and I was so voracious through the whole thing. ... NPR named it their album of the year. Now, I'm like, 'I will focus on voice.' "

He took a page out of Busta Rhymes' book of rhymes, noting how the veteran MC went from his "roar, roar" style to one in which he used his voice "more like an instrument."

"I needed 'Burn' to be as powerful as 'Pressure' but I needed it not to sound so angry that it turns people off," Mike explained. "So I thought of emotions that Americans are feeling besides anger — it's a seething feeling. It's not just 'I'm mad,' it's a seething anger. When you see banks let off the hook for millions and billions of dollars and the same banks a year later are telling you, 'I'm gonna foreclose on your home,' it don't matter if you're black, white, Asian, Dominican or Puerto Rican, what matters is that anger, the red in your eyes."

The result is not only an anthem for folks fighting the recession, but also a record that has found itself in rotation and posted on multiple blogs. "I used my telephone voice and, to be honest, it's created a new way for me to make records," he revealed.

PL3DGE is due for release on April 19, and in addition to Mike's musical pursuits, the rapper also recently appeared on MTV's "Made," where he served as a mentor to a young man who was being bullied.

"They were just great people," he said of the boy and his family. "Anybody that listens to the Pledge series knows that my music, beyond being dope music, is motivational. Listening to me, for a 'hood dude, is like listening to Tony Robbins. 'Made' gave me an opportunity to help a young man express himself through rap about some things going on and it also gave him an opportunity to be a youth counselor. So everything I been saying in my music, I was able to apply with this young man to the real world.

Panic! At The Disco Have 'Confidence' To Win MTV's Musical March Madness

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:52 AM PST

Our 2011 tournament begins Monday, but Panic! at the Disco are already sounding like the band to beat.
By James Montgomery

Last year, without the benefit of a new album or a chart-topping single, Panic! at the Disco managed to advance to the Elite 8 of MTV's Musical March Madness tournament, riding a wave of fan support to upset victories by Green Day, Death Cab for Cutie and the Young Veins (a win that must've been particularly sweet, given the, uh, history between the two groups), before running out of gas against eventual runners-up My Chemical Romance.

It was quite a ride, but rather than dwell on their victories, for the past 12 months, Panic! have been stewing over that loss to MCR. They watched as Coheed and Cambria hoisted the championship trophy, unable to suppress the thought that, really, the hardware should've been theirs. And they're ready to prove that fact in 2011.

So not only will Panic! enter this year's MMM tourney with a chip on their shoulder, but they've got a brand-new album, Vices & Virtues, due March 22, in their arsenal, too. And considering both of those facts — not to mention their fervent fanbase — we'd be selling Panic! short if we didn't consider them the favorites this time around.

Not surprisingly, Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith aren't taking their previous tournament success for granted. We found out they've actually been preparing for the 2011 MMM for months, and as we prepare to reveal our full bracket on Monday, we asked them to talk about their plan to win it all this year.

"We're going to have to persevere," Urie said. "We're going to have to start off strong and we're going to have to keep that momentum going."

"We're going to have to have great bench play ... the D's going to have to step up. We have to make plays. Guys have to get out there and somebody has to step up, and they will," Smith added. "We've already started our calisthenics and we're getting pretty agile. And, other than that ... [we've got] confidence."

And that confidence is key. It's what true champions are made of, after all. And though they'll face tough competition from the likes of Linkin Park and Adele, Panic! at the Disco are certainly looking — and sounding — like champions indeed.

"We're drinking Gatorade while we're running. It's good," Urie said. "We're not worried in the slightest bit. That's what it takes to win."

MTV's 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. 'Community' star and mtvU Woodies host doesn't want tour to feel like 'Donald Glover the comedian opened for Childish Gambino,' his rap alter ego.

Donald Glover's I Am Donald Tour kicks off in just over a month on April 16 in Iowa.

The mtvU Woodies host and "Community" star made a name for himself in the comedy world thanks to his group Derrick's Comedy and writing on the hit NBC show "30 Rock." Now, as Childish Gambino, Glover is giving hip-hop a try with his just-released untitled EP.

When MTV News caught up with him on Tuesday, Glover said he was excited for the world to see his show.

"We've done preview shows in L.A., and since then, we've made it tighter and better," he promised. "I come out and I guess I do some comedy stuff. There's video and there's surprise guest stuff. There's just, like, some fun stuff that's in there. I want it to be a cohesive piece. I don't want to be 'Donald Glover the comedian opened for Childish Gambino.' I want it to be more like, 'These are all facets of me.' "

Glover said he hoped his show made people feel more comfortable with themselves, seeing as he hid the fact that he was a rapper for a long time out of fear.

" 'Oh, people shouldn't know this about me; they should just know me as a comedian,' " Glover recalled thinking. "But I'm kind of done with that. That's bullsh--. I'm over that. I'm over trying to be cool. I'm over trying to be 'rap cool.' "

The show won't be a typical stand-up show or a typical rap concert, but rather a blend of both, Glover said. He's not sure whether he'll bring elements of his I Am Donald Tour to the Woodies, but he does know he wants to rub elbows with a certain 11-man rap collective.

"This Woodies thing is really just a big ploy for me to meet Odd Future Wolf Gang," he said of the Woodies performers. " 'So I get to meet Odd Future Wolf Gang? Cool.' "

Foo Fighters Go VHS For Brand-New 'Rope' Video

'It's not important for us to make videos, but it's fun to make videos,' Dave Grohl says regarding the new clip.
By James Montgomery

Over the course of their 15-year career, the Foo Fighters have made no shortage of truly memorable music videos. From the Mentos-spoofing "Big Me" and the costumed-and-campy "Learn to Fly" to more serious, somber clips like "Everlong" and "My Hero," they've carved out a rather unique niche in the rock world: They are the go-to guys for iconic clips ... and they have been for some time.

So, with the premiere of their new "Rope" video set to bow on Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, we decided to ask the Foos about their rather impressive video past ... and how they've managed to establish themselves as masters of the genre — goofy mustaches or not.

As it turns out, the secret to the rockers' success has a whole lot to do with not taking themselves — or the format — all that seriously.

"It's not important for us to make videos, but it's fun to make videos. I like making videos," frontman Dave Grohl said. "So, I don't know if bands have to make videos [these days], but I think it's cool. I've always liked making videos."

Of course, in an era where YouTube has changed the way fans view music videos, the entire concept of breaking the bank for an eye-catching clip is practically extinct. So rather than slowly die off, the Foos have embraced the DIY aesthetic ... as evidenced by their recent, shot-on-VHS "White Limo" video and "Rope," which Grohl revealed was also captured on old-school tape. But instead of being bummed by shrinking production values, Grohl and company have gone all-in ... and they're pleased with the results.

"Nowadays, if we go play in a club and someone has a video phone, they film it and then they put it on YouTube and it becomes a video," Grohl said. "The distribution of any of that information or images, it goes out everywhere, like that. ... That's f---ing rad."

Mike Starr's friends and fans have taken to Twitter to express their grief about the ex-Alice in Chains bassist's death on Tuesday (March 8).

"Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness," tweeted Dr. Drew Pinsky, who treated Starr on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" and the spin-off show "Sober House." "So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler — another founding member of a hard-rock powerhouse whose career was sidelined by drug addiction — also hit Twitter: "R.I.P. Mike Starr!! Such a sad day! :( :(" Adler is also a "Celebrity Rehab" alum, though the two men appeared on separate seasons. Starr would have turned 45 next month.

"Drugs and alcohol aren't a joke," tweeted Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum, who replaced Adler in GN'R. "Please take care of yourself and respect yourself. We lost Mike Starr today. Rest in Peace man."

Ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who filled in with Avenged Sevenfold after they lost Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan to an overdose, had this to say via Twitter: "RIP Mike Starr... I watched his struggle on Celebrity Rehab and had my fingers crossed for his recovery... this disease kills... sad stuff..."

Starr was found dead in a Salt Lake City house on Tuesday. He played bass for Alice in Chains from their inception in the late '80s until 1993, when he left the Seattle grunge stars while touring for their second album, Dirt.

Alice in Chains have several songs dealing with addiction. "You can't understand a user's mind," former singer Layne Staley sings on "Junkhead." Staley died in 2002 after overdosing on a mixture of heroin and cocaine.

Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx — a fellow hard-rock bassist who has made his own struggles with heroin very public (even calling his book and accompanying album with side project Sixx AM "The Heroin Diaries") — tweeted: "RIP Mike Starr. Another fallen Soldier to addiction... :("

"Mike Starr was a great and troubled guy," tweeted actress Mackenzie Phillips, who appeared on "Celebrity Rehab" with Starr. "I loved him. He would be so happy to know he's a #TT right now. Rest in Peace, brother. #dopekills"

Another of Starr's season-three castmates, Lisa D'Amato from "America's Next Top Model," tweeted: "My stomach is in my throat. We love U, Mike. #RIPMikey," with @ replies to Dr. Drew, Phillips, counselor Bob Forrest and Jennifer Gimenez, the actress known to reality-TV watchers as the house manager on VH1's "Sober House."

"I'm SHOCKED and SADDENED for the loss of MIKE STARR," Gimenez tweeted.

"Mike Starr was my homey," D'Amato tweeted a short time later. "He had a larger than life heart. My last visit w/him was a funny & sweet one. I'll always rmbr that. <3 #RIPMike."

"Mike Starr may you RIP," tweeted comedian Dane Cook. "Your music loves on forever."

Pro wrestler and hard-rock musician Chris Jericho tweeted, "Sorry to hear about Mike Starr's death. Amid all of the joking about tiger blood and winning, let's not forget that drugs kill people."

"Horrible news," tweeted Mark Morton, guitarist with heavy-metal band Lamb of God. "RIP Mike Starr."

Share your condolences for Starr's family and friends in the comments.

Holly Holliday revisited the classic made famous by Stevie Nicks on latest episode.
By Aly Semigran

Gwyneth Paltrow is back, Gleeks, and she's brought the legendary Stevie Nicks with her.

After weeks of waiting, the Academy Award-winning actress, who has more recently been spending her time performing onstage at various awards shows, including the Oscars and the Grammys, finally returned to reprise her "Glee" character, flighty substitute teacher Holly Holliday.

During her turn on Tuesday night's (March 8) episode, titled "Sexy," Paltrow, who made a lasting impression last time around thanks to her giddy (and squeaky-clean) take on Cee Lo Green's "Forget You," took on an entirely different sound when she sang the moving Fleetwood Mac classic "Landslide."

Accompanied by twangy guitars and a banjo, Paltrow drew on her country music chops (heard most recently in her 2010 drama "Country Strong") as she covered the timeless tune. But even before getting the "Glee"/Gwyneth treatment, "Landslide," written by Nicks, has long been considered a treasure of the Fleetwood Mac catalog.

In 1973, 25-year-old Nicks penned the song during a stay in the snowy mountains of Colorado. Although there have been various theories regarding who — or what — the song is about, the singer set the record straight during a visit to VH1's "Storytellers" in 1998.

"Everybody, everybody seems to think that I wrote this song about them — everybody in my family, all my friends, everybody," Nicks said on the show. "And my Dad, my Dad did have something to do with it, but he absolutely thinks that he was the whole, complete reason that it was ever written."

She went on to explain just how the song came to be, "[Bandmate] Lindsey [Buckingham] and I went up to Aspen and we went to somebody's incredible house and they had a piano and I had my guitar with me and I went in their living room, looking out over the incredible Aspen sky and I wrote 'Landslide.' "

The song, which includes such lyrics as "I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills/ Till the landslide brought me down," would become a turning point in the careers of Nicks and collaborator Buckingham, who was also her boyfriend at the time. As she told the "Storytellers" audience, "Three months later Mick Fleetwood called on New Year's Eve 1974 and asked us to join Fleetwood Mac."

"Landslide" was initially released on Fleetwood Mac's self-titled 1975 album, but it wasn't actually released as a single (despite being a fan favorite) until 1998, when a live version of the song appeared on the Fleetwood album The Dance and hit airwaves. It peaked at #10 on Billboard's adult contemporary chart and hit #51 on the Hot 100 that year.

The sentimental and deeply personal song, with its simple, yet effective guitar chords and lyrics like "Well, I've been afraid of changing/ 'Cause I've built my life around you" found its way into the hearts and onto the records of other inspired artists, most notably the Smashing Pumpkins and the Dixie Chicks.

The Smashing Pumpkins released their version of "Landslide" on their 1994 B-sides album, Pisces Iscariot. The cover went on to be one of the rock band's most-beloved tracks and even had the approval of Nicks herself. As she told fans during a 1998 online chat with SonicNet, "There's nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than [someone else] doing one of their songs. ['Landslide'] also led me to being friends with Billy [Corgan] and the possibility that we'll work together," she said of the Smashing Pumpkins frontman. "Over this song, there's been this incredible connection ... he reached out ... I believe that my poetry is really meant for everyone, no matter what age."

Nearly 10 years later, chart-topping country trio the Dixie Chicks created their own rendition of "Landslide." Released on their 2002 album, Home, the trio's cover also became a favorite among fans.

With its debut on Glee, "Landslide," proves that it continues to be a song that speaks to many generations, moving listeners years after Nicks first shared the song with the world more than 35 years ago.

News of former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr's death on Tuesday (March 8) had a big impact on his famous friends, including Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Dr. Drew, who treated Starr on "Celebrity Rehab." But the hardest hit may have been fans of the late musician, who flooded MTV News' comments section with memories of his music and well-wishes for his family.

"Very Sad," Cheryl wrote. "My heart goes out to everyone he left behind. Addiction is very hard to kick."

Kim added: "Not only do I love Alice in Chains, but I watched Mike on 'Celebrity Rehab' and 'Sober House' and you get to where you feel like you know them. This breaks my heart in two...there are not words. RIP, Mike."

Other commenters echoed those thoughts, lamenting Starr's fatal addictions.

"Such a sad story about him," Kandi wrote. "I guess it's not a shock because I was watching him on 'Celebrity Rehab' & 'Sober House.' Drugs are no joke at all. RIP Mike Starr."

"Very sad to hear. My thoughts are with his family," said fellow "Celebrity Rehab" viewer Michiangel. "I watched him struggle on 'Celebrity Rehab' and really hoped that he would surpass his addiction."

Teegee16 hoped other addicts would take Starr's death to heart: "They say you can't scare an addict but here's proof again that we can most certainly die from drugs. Hopefully he didn't die in vain and someone out there got the message about how serious addiction is."

"I am so heartbroken, I don't have words," Sometimes_Charlotte wrote. "My heart goes out to his family. He meant a lot to me; I have personal reasons for this. I can only imagine how devastated his family is."

Other fans remembered Starr's musical legacy as bassist for Alice in Chains from their inception in the late '80s until 1993.

"Rest in peace brother," Thorum wrote. "Thanks for the music and good times!!"

"You made a difference in my life, however humble that might be," James A. Brennan wrote to Starr. "Rest in peace dude."

Kevin called out his favorite album by the band: "Alice in Chains, Dirt...no substitute. God bless."

This isn't the first loss for Alice in Chains fans: Frontman Layne Staley died of a drug overdose back in 2002.

"Another great loss to the band and great bassists; too young brother," Joe wrote.

"Layne has some more company in Rock 'n Roll Heaven now," Sonia wrote. "R.I.P.,Mike. Alice In Chains fan forever."

Gucci Mane has a strange way of showing affection.

The Burrrprint rapper, along with Rocko and Webbie, trade tales of lust on "I Don't Love Her," while showering women with attention at the club.

The video, directed by Mr. Boomtown, is set to premiere on MTV News' "RapFix Live" on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. In the clip, the ladies gyrate and fight for the attention of Gucci Mane and company.

"I love things about her, but I don't love her/ I love the way she treats me, but I don't love her," they chant on the hook.

The track is from La Flare's latest album, the forthcoming The Return of Mr. Zone 6, featuring collaborations with Wale, Master P, Birdman and Waka Flocka Flame, among others.

The project is Gucci Mane's first since the rapper's string of odd behavior, from pleading "mental incompetency" after a probation violation to tattooing a lightning-bolted ice cream cone on his face.

After the rapper's past two thoughtful albums, The State vs. Radric Davis and The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted, this go-round, Gucci Mane is aiming for a return to his roots: the streets.

"This street album is a return to the music that got me buzzin' in the first place," Gucci said in a statement about The Return of Mr. Zone 6. "It didn't really make sense to not have some of the people who've been responsible for some of my best street records behind me."

'Hunger Games' Casting News: What We Know So Far

A long list of young actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence, are up for the coveted role of Katniss.

In the dystopian world imagined by Suzanne Collins in her best-selling young-adult trilogy "The Hunger Games," anxious teens hope against all odds that they can avoid the titular, televised fight to the death decreed by their government. But in the real world, Hollywood's rising stars are battling to get into the arena for the upcoming adaptation of the series' first novel due out March 23, 2012. And no role is more hotly contested than that of 16-year-old District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen.

Casting speculation has run rampant since the news came in March 2009 that the novel's screen rights had been purchased by Lionsgate. U.K. "Skins" star Kaya Scodelario was an early fan favorite for the role and, along with "Nikita" star Lyndsy Fonseca was reportedly among the first to receive a script. Slowly but surely, however, actresses from their early teens to their mid-20s have begun hungrily eying the part of the 16-year-old heroine.

"Katniss is my homegirl," "Kick-Ass" star Chloe Moretz told MTV News back in October 2010. "I would absolutely die to be in 'The Hunger Games.' I'm just sayin' that."

A few weeks later, "Vampire Diaries" star Malese Jow spoke with Hollywood Crush, expressing a similar sentiment. "I would do my absolute best," she promised. "I would give it 2,000 percent for everyone. I know there are some die-hard fans out there."

A couple of young actresses have gone so far as to tweet pictures of themselves done up as Katniss (and in some cases, sporting her signature bow and arrow). For Halloween 2010, "Eclipse" star Jodelle Ferland dressed as the tribute, though she downplayed the stunt tweeting, "Don't take it so seriously ... I'm not trying to say, 'Hey, look at me. I should be Katniss.' " More recently, "Camp Rock" actress Alyson Stoner posted various photos of herself dressed in Katniss' iconic Hunger Games uniform and climbing walls as part of her "training."

Though plenty of up-and-coming actresses have thrown their name into the ring, producer Nina Jacobson told The L.A. Times early on that a known name wasn't necessary for the part. "It really comes down to finding that person who can capture the physicality, the vulnerability and the toughness," she said. "She's a paradoxical character and you need somebody who has the range to capture all of those dimensions."

In a piece in The Wall Street Journal detailing the hunt for the "next Hailee Steinfeld," the paper went behind the scenes of several upcoming YA adaptations, including "The Hunger Games," in which casting director Debra Zane explained that an open casting call had gone out for Katniss (Caucasian, between the ages of 15 and 20, someone who could portray "underfed but strong" and "naturally pretty underneath her tomboyishness"), and that she'd seen about 50 girls so far.

Nonetheless, last week Variety reported that Lionsgate had three Oscar-nominated actresses in their crosshairs: Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence (with Lawrence as the front-runner). Steinfeld revealed to MTV News on the Oscars red carpet that she had already met with director Gary Ross, saying, "It's definitely something that we're taking one day at a time and making sure that everything is in place."

Entertainment Weekly quickly filed a report that conflicted with Variety's, citing sources at Lionsgate who said that there was not yet a front-runner for the role and that about 30 actresses had been seen for the part, including a few who hadn't yet gained much "Hunger Games" heat (like "The Lovely Bones" star Saoirse Ronan). Fan site The Hob followed up with Scodelario's people (one of the actresses included in EW's report), who said she had not, in fact, read for the role yet.

Ultimately, Lionsgate's pick for Katniss will influence which of Hollywood's young actors will be eyed for the roles of fellow Hunger Games contestant Peeta and Katniss' childhood friend Gale (age is a big factor here). Nonetheless, several actors, including Liam Hemsworth and Alex Pettyfer, have told MTV News they have met with the studio about the Peeta role.

It will be a "Hunger Games" fight to the finish, indeed.

Who do you hope the odds are in favor of to play Katniss?

Jason Bateman Calls 'Arrested Development' Movie Plot 'Incredible'

'It's everything you would want it to be and more,' actor tells MTV News.

Despite David Cross' hilariously pessimistic outlook on the possibility of an "Arrested Development" movie, exec producer Ron Howard wasn't kidding when he told MTV News that an adaptation of the TV series is "a real priority" for creator Mitch Hurwitz.

How do we know? Well, aside from just really, really hoping he wasn't kidding, Jason Bateman recently tossed us some info that indicates Hurwitz is very much plowing forward with a script — five years after the show's cancellation.

"For the very first time, [Hurwitz] sat me down last week to talk about what he's got and where he's going and what do I think," Bateman told us while promoting his upcoming comedy "Paul." "As a fan of the show, I was vibrating with excitement that he was pulling me behind the curtain."

Mind you, Bateman still hasn't seen a single page of a script, but the mere fact that he had a meeting about the project was enough to encourage the actor that, at long last, an "Arrested" movie will actually become a reality.

"I can confirm what his update was, which was that he is very deep into the work on it," Bateman said. "The odds of him getting it done before the end of the year, as he says he wants to, are good."

So, um, what did Hurwitz actually dish about the story line? Bateman didn't let any details slip out other than to say the concept is "incredible." "It's everything you would want it to be and more," he added. "I really hope he finishes soon so we have a shot at doing it before the end of the year."

Check out everything we've got on "Paul."

Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz Headed To Court In Custody Case

Divorcing couple are engaged in battle over 2-year-old son Bronx.
By Gil Kaufman

The amicable split between Pete Wentz and soon-to-be ex-wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz appears to be taking a slightly less friendly turn. The couple, who separated earlier this year and seemed to be on good terms, appear to be headed to court to resolve a brewing custody dispute over their 2-year-old son, Bronx.

(See photos of Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz throughout the years.)

According to TMZ, Wentz filed papers on Monday in response to Simpson's divorce petition. The former Fall Out Boy bassist asked that a judge grant joint physical and legal custody of their son and requested that each spouse pay their own legal fees. The gossip site also claimed to have obtained a copy of the divorce petition, in which lawyers for Simpson-Wentz checked a box indicating that she wanted primary physical custody of the toddler and that she wanted Wentz to pay her legal fees as well.

The Wentz form lists May 16, 2008, as the date of their marriage and February 9, 2011, as the date of their separation.

When news of the divorce broke last month, sources close to the couple said they were intent on riding out the split peacefully and putting their focus on Bronx's well-being. "It's very amicable. They're on very friendly terms and speaking — it's fine," an insider told People magazine at the time. "They've just grown apart. They've been growing apart for quite some time."

The source added that parenting their toddler remained their top priority. "It's all about Bronx for them. They're fantastic parents — Pete says she's a great mom, and she says he's a great father," the insider said. "It's about Bronx's care and well-being and happiness for them."

Insiders have also echoed the "growing apart" reasoning to TMZ, adding that their respective careers — Simpson has largely eschewed the spotlight since 2008's Bittersweet World, while Wentz has dabbled in fashion and piloted other musical projects — wedged them apart.

"After Bronx was born, Ashlee made a conscious decision to get out of the business, but Pete's heart was in music so he kept touring and that became a big issue in their relationship," the source added.

While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left because of Wentz's antics. "It's really all about Pete's erratic behavior," the source said. "She really wanted out."

Ex-Alice In Chains Bassist Mike Starr Found Dead

Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr was found dead Tuesday afternoon (March 8).

TMZ reports that police found Starr's body in a Salt Lake City, Utah, house at 1:42 p.m. He was 44 years old.

A co-founding member of the pioneering Seattle grunge band, Starr appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" in 2009. He was arrested last month for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City police said he had several painkillers on him when he was arrested. Alice in Chains have written heart-wrenching and evocative songs about drug addiction.

Former singer Layne Staley died in spring 2002 after overdosing on a mixture of heroin and cocaine, commonly known as a "speedball." The group mounted a successful comeback with 2009's Black Gives Way to Blue, which featured new vocalist William DuVall alongside guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez.

Mike Starr was born April 4, 1966, in Honolulu. He rose to prominence in the Seattle scene as bassist for Diamond Lie, which featured Cantrell and Kinney. Once Staley entered the fold, they changed their name to Alice in Chains and signed a major-label deal. Starr appears on the group's debut album, Facelift, which produced the monster hit "Man in the Box." He's also on the band's follow-up EP release, Sap, and their second album, Dirt, which was released in September 1992.

Dirt is a hard rock classic, with "Rooster" remaining a radio staple. "Would?" was featured in the movie "Singles," which was set in the Seattle scene. "Down in a Hole" has been covered by Ryan Adams, Fuel and Demon Hunter. Songs like "Junkhead" dealt with heroin use head-on. The band Godsmack, whose sound owes much to Alice in Chains, took their name from track nine. Cantrell wrote the majority of the songs with some heavy contributions from Staley. Starr is credited as a co-writer on one track, "Rain When I Die."

Starr left Alice in Chains while touring behind Dirt in 1993. Years later, he would reveal on "Celebrity Rehab" that his reason for leaving was his growing addiction to drugs. He briefly joined former Black Sabbath singer Ray Gillen in Sun Red Sun. Their self-titled debut was released in 1995, two years after Gillen died from AIDS-related complications.

Heroin addiction sent Starr to "Celebrity Rehab," which was followed by a stint in the spin-off show "Sober House." He showed up on one episode of the following season of "Celebrity Rehab," celebrating more than six months of sobriety. He was arrested for possession by Salt Lake City police on February 18, 2011.

Travis Meeks of the band Days of the New was reportedly driving the van Starr was riding in when he was arrested last month. The singer/guitarist found platinum success with his band's first album in 1997 and a sound that drew comparisons to Alice in Chains. Meeks put together several different versions of the band in subsequent years, and his own drug problems landed him on the A&E show "Intervention" in 2005.

"Hey, officer, have you ever heard of Alice in Chains? I used to be the bass guitarist for them," Starr said to police, according to a local news report. "We are down here in Utah, me and Travis, putting together a new band."

According to a Ticketmaster listing, "Days of the New featuring Travis Meeks and Mike Starr" was scheduled to appear March 19 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Mike's dad told TMZ his son's death is "a terrible shock and tragedy."

Avril Lavigne asked "What the Hell" on her Goodbye Lullaby lead single, and she had a little help from a pretty impressive music-industry vet. For her fourth studio album, out Tuesday (March 8), Lavigne jetted off to Sweden to work with legendary pop producer Max Martin.

"What was really great about working with Max was, I flew out to Sweden for a couple weeks, sat down, played him my record, got to know each other, wrote some songs together, and then I was out," she told MTV News. "It switched it up for me. It was a new creative space, a new relationship, and we got a lot done. He's very talented."

Martin, who has worked with everyone from Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson to Katy Perry, really seemed to click with the pop/punk princess. "He said some really kind things that really meant a lot to me," she said. "He worked with so many people and he's an artist, he's very sensitive. We wrote a couple really special songs together."

In the process of writing those tracks, it seems that Martin and Lavigne forged quite a bond. "It's kind of hard to work with someone new, and when I went in and did vocals on 'Wish You Were Here,' I did my first take, and then Max stood up and was like, 'I'm so honored that you're here.'

"And it was a really special moment, where he understood me and I understood him," she continued. "We connected and had a really great time. And it was really magic my first trip there. He's sweet."

Nelly could have been channeling Rick James on his Teena Marie-featuring classic "Fire & Desire" when the St. Louis rapper first sets eyes on Kelly Rowland in his latest video for "Gone": "It's really good to see you again and I must admit you're looking really nice these days," James says, and Nelly seems to echo those sentiments in the brand-new clip, which leaked on Tuesday (March 8).

(Check out photos of Nelly and Kelly Rowland on the set of "Gone.")

The pair reconnect on the Jim Jonsin-produced (and Rico Love-penned) track from Nelly's 5.0, a reunion for the artists, who scored a hit years ago on 2002's "Dilemma."

In the video, Nelly and Rowland are both vacationing on an island resort, when the rapper spots the singer lounging out in the sun and is stopped in his tracks. Throughout the visual, they take turns not only crooning to each other but also pining for the other.

"I don't want to say it's a sequel. I don't want to diminish anything with 'Dilemma' or have an expectation you can't live up to when you do that," Nelly told MTV News last year about "Gone." "When you do that type of thing, there's people who are already, 'I don't wanna hear it. It's supposed to be "Dilemma." ' You already being negative [before] pushing the button!

"It's one of those things where we did reconnect," he continued. "Our chemistry has already proven to be good, whether it was onstage or in the studio. It was something that we wanted to reconnect with. It was produced by Jim Jonsin. ... It's a cool joint. I think people will get it. It can never be 'Dilemma,' but we wanted to extend the story. It's continuing the story a little bit more, seeing her again."

Donald Glover Releases Untitled EP

Woodie Awards host is surprised by positive response to his transition from comedy to rap.
By Steven Roberts

Photo: Gustavo Caballero/WireImage

Woodie Awards host Donald Glover has been making a name for himself as an actor on NBC's "Community," as a member of the comedy group Derrick Comedy and as a writer on another NBC property, "30 Rock," for quite some time. However, Glover has also been working on his rap skills, under the alias Childish Gambino. Tuesday morning (March 8), Glover released his latest Childish Gambino EP, which oddly enough he left untitled, via his blog.

"I didn't feel like it needed a name. I was trying not to give it a name, but a lot of people named it [anyway]," Glover said. "I just wanted it to be. But I like the fact that people are naming it."

Glover had been making a splash as of late thanks to his recent single and video for "Freaks and Geeks," as well as his scene-stealing verse on Jamie XX's remix of Adele's phenomenal "Rolling in the Deep." Each helped to build anticipation for the release of his EP, which he said people started calling "Be Alone," "Freaks and Geeks" and then simply "EP."

Glover said he released his first project as a sophomore in college — the untitled EP is his seventh. He started making music for fun, but he wasn't sure how people would receive Childish's work at first. He thought he'd be dismissed as a rapper, but he has grown more confident as his skills have progressed.

"I wouldn't put out 'Sick Boy' now or 'I Am Just a Rapper' now. I would be like, 'I can do much better than that.' I guess I was just afraid for a long time because I didn't want people to be like, 'Oh, he's a comedian, he can't do that. He's going to Eddie Murphy himself.' But I was like, you know, I'm just having fun. If people want to just have fun with me, that's fine. I've just been really amazed by the response."

A larger part of the response saw the New York leg of Glover's I Am Donald Tour sell out in five hours and the D.C. leg sell out in three. He said he was thankful for the reaction, but he still found it very strange.

"I'm very happy, and it's very cool that people are willing to do that, because I know personally, it would be hard for me if Dane Cook just started playing the piccolo. That's weird. I don't know if I want to pay to see Dane Cook play the piccolo."

Last month, Britney Spears teased a snippet of her Femme Fatale track "Inside Out." Now, a bit more of the sexy track, including some of the song's reported lyrics, has hit the Net.

In the new 30-second teaser for the song, posted on MuuMuse.com, fans are given a taste of not only part of the chorus, but also part of one of the song's bridges, which features a booming mid-tempo beat. Spears, in her signature style, sings, "You touch me and it's breaking me down/ and me down, and me down, and me down/ I'm telling you, let's just give it up and get down/ and get down, and get down ..."

On the breakup track's chorus, she sings, "So come on/ Won't you give me something to remember?/ Baby shut your mouth and turn me inside out/ Even though we couldn't last forever, baby."

Other lyrics seem like a switched-up version of those previously released. Neither set of lyrics has been confirmed as the album version. "Said you're gonna be here in a minute/ Sitting in the mirror getting pretty/ Gotta look my best if we're gonna break up/ Gotta look my best if we're gonna break up," the reported lyrics read.

The lyrics go on, "I can hear you knocking at the front door/ And I know exactly what you came for/ Try to say goodbye but it's hot and heavy."

The previously reported lyrics were: "Said you're gonna be here in two minutes/ Sitting in the mirror getting ready/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ I can hear you knocking at the back door/ And I know exactly what you're here for/ Trying to say goodbye but I'm not that ready."

Lupe Fiasco Wants <i>Lasers</i> To Take Him To 'Another Level'

'If we're gonna go and try to get on radio ... there's a certain format that you have to fit to do that,' he tells MTV News.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Lupe Fiasco is undoubtedly one of the most talented MCs in hip-hop, but he is still working to earn a place in the upper echelon of rap superstars. With the Chicago rapper's third album, Lasers, out Tuesday (March 8), Lupe makes a leap in that direction.

"For this record, being a more popular record and being the goal of this record from its inception, no matter what changes and phases and label battles that it went through, it was always about, 'Let's take it to another level,' " he told MTV News. "If we're gonna go and try to get on radio, trying to capture that bigger audience, there's a certain format that you have to fit to do that. That's the growth that the fans want, the underrated things that the critics say. So to achieve those things, you have to play that [game]. You can't say, 'I wanna play for the Yankees,' and you're a football player. That's not gonna work. You have to learn how to play baseball."

His current single, "The Show Goes On," with its triumphant production and melodic chorus, is a prime example of the rapper's shift. Although the emphasis on a more mass philosophy was the intention, Lupe is still wrapping his head around his new direction.

"I was literally told for 'The Show Goes On' that I shouldn't rap too deep," he said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. "I shouldn't be too lyrical. It just needs to be something easy on the eyes. Like a record company telling Picasso that we don't need these abstract interpretations of life, where people have to sit down and look at it and break it down. It was better to paint the Upper West Side lady and her poodle so everyone could look at it right away and understand what was going on. I felt like I was painting poodles."
