Dave Grohl Goes DIY Route For Foo Fighters' 'Rope' Video

New clip premieres Thursday on MTV, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com.

By now, you've probably heard Dave Grohl sum up his directorial body of work as having "lots of hair" (while, at the same time, remaining strangely "waxed").

But despite that assessment — and his work on the Foos' brand-new "Rope" video, which premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and MTV.com — you'd probably be surprised to know that Grohl doesn't really consider himself to be a director at all.

"I'm not a director. I don't even know how to use the equipment, but it's fun to try," he laughed. "[And these days] any kid can do exactly that and have a million people watch it. That's awesome."

He's talking, in part, about the video for "Rope," but also his shot-on-VHS quickie clip for another Wasting Light song, "White Limo," which was filmed in just six hours on an old handheld and has since gone on to eclipse the 1 million-view mark on YouTube. To Grohl, they're basically the same thing: proof that, in this day and age, bands don't have to break the bank to make a video. They just have to have a killer idea (and maybe a cameo by Lemmy too).

"It's nice now that there's not as much importance put on videos as there was in the past. People used to spend, like, $5 million making a video. You think people do that now? They don't," Grohl said. "They get a VHS camera, and they make a video in six hours, and today, over 1 million people have watched 'White Limo,' the video we made with a VHS camera. And it's cool. Anybody can do that. That's f---ing rad."

The Foo Fighters' "Rope" video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan's house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions via Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos).

Adele Has 'Trained Hard' For MTV's Musical March Madness

Our 2011 tournament begins March 14, but Adele is ready to go — even if she doesn't like sports.
By James Montgomery

Last year, when the selection committee was assembling the field of bands for our inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, British belter Adele was left out — an omission that, at the time, seemed somewhat forgivable, considering she was basically off the grid, holed up in Malibu to begin work on the songs that would shape her chart-topping 21 album.

Of course, this year, it would be close to blasphemy not to include Adele in the field of 64 acts that will compete for the MMM trophy. Not only has she conquered the world with 21, but she worked with Rick Rubin on the record, and that dude most certainly rocks, which makes her a shoo-in for the 2011 tourney.

But, as we learned Monday, Adele will face a tough road to the championship. Rock titans Linkin Park have already promised to bring "total dominance" to the 2011 MMM tournament — we'll unveil our entire championship bracket Monday, March 14 — and, as it turns out, Adele doesn't seem to know the first thing about college basketball, which is where this entire idea came from in the first place.

"I don't like sports!" she laughed.

Still, she's willing to give it a try. So we asked her: Just how has she been preparing to take down the likes of Linkin Park in the 2011 Musical March Madness tourney?

"I've trained really hard," she explained. "I've worked really hard this whole season, leading up to the release of this record."

Of course, she followed that boast up with an uncontrollable fit of laughter, but it bears mention that, with an armload of Grammys, a #1 album and fervent fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, Adele definitely has a shot at shocking the world this year, especially since fans determine all the winners in our tournament.

And, really, if she does manage to come out on top, can you imagine what her acceptance speech would be like?

MTV's 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM ... but get ready, it's gonna be a war.

Jacob Lusk Shows Off His 'American Idol' Happy Dance

The judges on "American Idol" have marveled at the vocal force of Jacob Lusk ever since the gospel-drenched singer blew them away during Hollywood Week. But Lusk isn't just a potential heir to the Luther Vandross velvet-ballad throne; he's also a dance machine.

On Thursday night, after he and 12 other "Idol" singers made it into the show's top 13, Lusk showed off his now-signature celebration hoofing. "It's just a happy dance. When I get happy, it starts off with a stomp, and then I just kind of get a little carried away," he smiled when asked to demonstrate the move.

"It usually happens in church. That's kind of where it stemmed from, is from church. ... I kind of have no boundaries. I have a problem. Pray for me," he joked about his moves and how the "Idol" ride so far has inspired him to mix in some dancing with his singing.

But when it comes to those rich vocals, Lusk said he has a plan for sounding modern without losing his old-school roots. "I want to stay contemporarily classic," he explained. "For me, whatever music I sing, it doesn't matter as long as when I'm finished singing that I've touched you, that something's affected you. You can do that with a club joint, you can do that with a ballad ... but I'm definitely going to try and mix it up a little bit as the season continues on."

Lusk will get another chance to be himself on Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week.

Raekwon Battles Himself On Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang

'It's ... dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew,' Rae tells MTV News of new solo LP.
By Paul Cantor

Raekwon the Chef knows a thing or two about Shaolin and Wu-Tang. The title of the MC's fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, represents the New York City borough he hails from, Staten Island — whose street name in rap circles is Shaolin — and, of course, the MC has been a key member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan since its founding in the early '90s.

Ultimately, though, Rae's album, which dropped on Tuesday (March 8), is inspired (like many things Wu-Tang) by the classic 1981 Gordon Liu film of the same name, about a rivalry between two schools of ancient martial arts.

"[The film is about] basically two schools fighting with one another," Raekwon told MTV News recently about the movie's plot. "But they all come from the same school, and it was an outsider who actually tried to get the Shaolin style and the Wu-Tang style and have them go at one another. On this album, it's the same thing: It's two schools and, you know, I'm part of that school. I'm Shaolin but at the same time, I'm Wu-Tang. So really, it's ego versus discipline, dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew."

It's no coincidence that the concept behind Raekwon's album focuses on two forces in opposition. Rae began working on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang back in late 2007, after expressing disappointment with the creative direction Wu-Tang's nominal leader, the RZA, had taken with the group's '07 LP, 8 Diagrams. (Fellow Wu member Ghostface Killah went so far as to call the album "bullsh--" in an interview with MTV's "Sucker Free" at the time.)

In an interview the same year with Miss Info, Raekwon remarked: "RZA's trying to create too much of an orchestra, piano, you know ...he's trying to do too much of this guitar sh-- and we don't want that and the fans don't want that. I'm not having that. ... Realistically, what's gonna happen is ... if [8 Diagrams] comes out, we comin' out with another album."

Rae went on to release his critically acclaimed solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Part 2 in 2009, followed by 2010's Wu-Massacre, a collaboration album with fellow Wu members Ghostface and Method Man. The sonic direction of both projects returned to the gritty production style that Wu-Tang Clan had become known for.

But in that time, RZA and Rae also buried the hatchet. So while Rae's latest solo album was concieved during a feud, and uses that theme as its core, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang may turn out to be the album that shows Wu-Tang really is forever.

"You gonna hear a lot of loving songs in there, you gonna hear betrayal songs, you gonna hear action that takes place on some of the records," Rae explained. "But it all revolves around that world, that Shaolin/Wu-Tang world. They just battling one another, and at the end of the day, we all come to find out that we're one and the same. We fighting each other but we're the same."

Aubrey O'Day's Over-The-Top Doggie Love Makes For A TV First

'All About Aubrey' reality star calls her pups 'the loves of my life.'

There are moments in television that go down as "TV firsts," and on the premiere of Aubrey O'Day's reality show, "All About Aubrey," on Monday night, that moment occurred around minute 32.

To put it delicately, O'Day gets the idea to preserve her Pomeranian's prosperity by collecting and freezing his, um, sample. Don't let it throw you that his name is Mary Ann: O'Day says in her household, "We don't do gender-bias names."

In the scene, O'Day tasks her roommate/assistant with collecting the canine donation with a do-it-yourself kit (the miracles of the Internet!). After the assistant has some difficulty finishing the job, O'Day takes matters into own hands — literally. "Can we get him a hot towel?" O'Day asks at the climax of the scene.

With the mission completed, the future is secure for the next generation of Mary Ann's, along with its place in TV history.

Of her rather-extreme devotion to her pups, O'Day told MTV News, "I actually just got a Twitter from someone saying that I'm like the canine version of 'Toddlers and Tiaras,' which I really do believe. Not in like a stage-mom crazy kind of way, but my dogs are so pampered and are the loves of my life, and they are everywhere I go and then some."

In this case, place the emphasis on "and then some."

Stalley Makes Music For His Ohio Hometown To 'Ride Out To'

Street King: Stalley

Holding It Down For: Massillon, OH

Mixtape: Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music)

Real Spit: Stalley is a hometown hero. He might have moved out of his home state of Ohio, first by taking a scholarship to play hoops at the University of Michigan then later at Long Island University. But his heart never left Massillon, a blue-collar town bred on basketball and football dreams.

For his latest project, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music), he recruited a fellow Ohioan, producer Rashad, and the two created the soundtrack to Massillon's night life.

"It's paying homage to my hometown, and in my hometown there's a street called Lincoln Way that everyone cruises on Friday and Saturday nights, showing off the cars, whether it's an old muscle car or a new-school paint-up car with a loud system. This is something I wanted to give back, as far as a music project, for that strip. Something that people can actually ride out to or be that soundtrack to that journey."

Start it up.

Joints to Check For
» "She Hates the Bass": "A lot of people like to drive old-school cars where I'm from," Stalley said. "They have systems tuned and popping. That's what I'm giving them. I'm giving them something they can ride from but also listen to and learn from."

» "See the Milq From My Chevy": "There's a theme to it, the project. The best way I can describe it is 'intelligent trunk music,' " he explained. "There's a lot of concepts, a lot of lyrics, a lot of hard work in it. So, what I'm giving them is putting that sound, that 808, that slap, trunk music [into a bigger picture]."

» "Lincoln Way Nights (Shop)": "Where I'm from, it's a small city built on steel factories and the railroad industry," Stalley said. "It's blue-collar and a lot of toughness around, so that's what's in my music. I just want to paint that picture and bring to life a small city that may be overlooked. There's a lot of small cities that are over looked that have a big responsibility on the way America runs."

Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters' 'Rope' Video Is 'Claustrophobic'

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 11:15 PM PST

New clip premieres on MTV on Thursday, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com.
By James Montgomery

The Foo Fighters

Over the years, Dave Grohl has directed a handful of Foo Fighters videos — "My Hero," "Monkey Wrench," "All My Life" — and these generally fall under the category of "the ones where the bandmembers don't wear funny disguises." In fact, if there's a unifying theme to his work, it's probably that.

But if you dig a bit deeper, you start to notice another similarity between Grohl's videos: They're all, on some level at least, performance clips. They're artfully done, of course, but still feature the band doing what they do best: rocking hard.

So, when it came time to direct the Foo Fighters' brand-new video for "Rope" — which makes its world premiere Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV — Grohl didn't stray far from his tried-and-true formula.

"I've made a couple Foo Fighters videos, and it's easy for me to come up with a treatment or direct the band because I know what we're like, and I know what we look like when we play. So most of the Foo Fighters videos that I've done have at least a little bit of performance in them," he told MTV News. "Some of them are entirely performance-based, like the new one. The video for 'Rope' was meant to really just look like the band performing the song in a really tight, claustrophobic space, not unlike our rehearsal space. I think practicing in this little rehearsal space that we have really influenced that idea, and we actually set up just as we do in rehearsal for the video."

Of course, as "Rope" proves, even the simplest of concepts can pack a wallop. As Grohl said, there's a creeping claustrophobia to the new video, a rapidly ratcheting sense that the walls are closing in ... a feeling that's echoed on the band's upcoming Wasting Light album. This not only adds another level to the clip, but makes it a worthy addition to Grohl's ever-growing, exceedingly hairy body of work, too.

"I'd say my body of work is thin in places, and some places don't have hair where there should be, and other places there's, like, lots of hair. But it's pretty nice," he laughed. "It'll get big, it'll get smaller, it just depends. But I'm very proud of my body of work. Let's just say it's waxed."

The Foo Fighters' 'Rope' video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan's house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions via Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos).

Over the weekend, it was reported that surveillance footage had been sold by the Venice, California, jewelry store accusing Lindsay Lohan of stealing a $2,500 necklace. And on Monday night (March 7), "Entertainment Tonight" aired the first snippets from the four security cameras, showing the actress trying on jewelry and texting.

The show, which has 45 minutes of footage, will air video of Lohan wearing the necklace in question during Tuesday's show.

The surveillance videos were sold to The Associated Press by the jewelry store, Kamofie &Co.; the AP then licensed the footage exclusively to "Entertainment Tonight." The website NecklaceVideo.com has been registered with the intention to post the full security footage online at a later date.

Lohan was charged with felony grand theft last month after allegedly taking the necklace from the store on January 22. The actress faces up to three years in prison if convicted. During another hearing last month, Judge Keith Schwartz told Lohan that she would definitely go to jail for probation violation if she accepts a plea deal of any kind.

"One of the things about me is that I treat everybody the same," Schwartz warned the actress. "What I look to in sentencing is, 'What is the prior record?' In this particular case, there has been so much speculation in the press [that] I'm just going to tell you a couple of things: If you plead in front of me, you are going to jail. There might be an issue about the amount of time, but if the case settles here, you will be going to jail."

Lohan is due back in court on Thursday.

Charlie Sheen Approves Of 'SNL' Impression, Bill Hader Says

Impersonating anyone on "Saturday Night Live" is a science and an art, and Bill Hader's #winning take on embattled actor Charlie Sheen on this week's show (hosted by Miley Cyrus) was a spot-on impression. It was so accurate that the star himself loved Hader's take on his over-the-top persona.

"He liked it," Hader told MTV News while promoting his movie "Paul" on Monday (March 7) in New York. "Charlie reacted to it and really liked it and I never met him before, so that's good."

The idea for the sketch, which parodied Sheen's recent media rants about tiger blood and goddesses, among other things, was the brainchild of several of the show's writers, and Hader said that by the time it aired on Saturday night, they had to make sure they found a fresh approach into the meme.

"Colin Jost and Seth Myers and John Mulaney wrote that sketch, and ... it was smart in the way that I never felt like it was hard to get the voice down, but his attitude that he's owning this and that you should own it to all these other people was really smart," he said of Sheen's fake talk show "Duh! Winning!," which featured fellow lightning rods Moammar Gadhafi and John Galliano. "It was an interesting ... smart take on it. It all happened so fast."

Hader admitted that, if they hadn't gone there, everyone would have wondered why. "That was the interesting thing about doing it on 'SNL.' It's like a full week of other people doing it and doing it well, so it's always kind of like, 'What haven't they done?' " he said. "Even if you don't do it, then people are like, 'Why didn't you do it?' I thought they did a great job."

Lupe Fiasco Aimed To Pull Back Curtain With 'Show Goes On' Video

'We already know what the public life is, so let's see what goes on behind the scenes,' Lupe explains to MTV News of clip concept.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Lupe Fiasco ran into a few road blocks while he was putting together his third studio album, Lasers. From his manager's imprisonment to a public spat with his record label, the Chicago rapper had a lot to reflect on.

So when he fully launched the project — after a fan-fueled protest pushing for an officially release date — he led off with the string-heavy "The Show Goes On," an introspective number that finds the Chicago rapper narrating his plight and highlighting his eventual resolve against it.

It only makes sense that the video matches the track with its emphasis on Lupe Fiasco the man over Lupe the MC.

"This one seemed fitting in the sense that [the director] wanted to tell the story about what goes on behind the scenes, which, I think, was so much a part of Lasers, the album," he told MTV News on Monday (March 7). "Why it is, how it's manifested, the songs on there, all have these massive amounts of story lines of behind the scenes. This is what happened; this is what happened with this record. Even 'The Show Goes On' has a story to it that some people, when they hear it in its completion, their jaws drop."

In the clip, directed by Hiro Murai, Lupe is shown making his way from his dressing room to a performance area. It's a symbolic gesture, meant to illuminate all of the mechanisms involved in getting the star to the stage. Fiasco told us the visual strikes a chord that resonates throughout the album.

"We already know what the performance is, we already know [who] you are, let's give it a little more of a personal feel, so we can see the route taken behind the scenes, literally, from the dressing room to the stage," he explained of Murai's approach to the clip. "We already know what is onstage. We already know what the public life is, so let's see what goes on behind the scenes. And [the video] speaks to a lot of the stuff on the album, beyond 'The Show Goes On.' "

Rapper settles with Suge Knight over Miami shootout after a separate copyright suit was dismissed.

Add to the list of places you won't see Kanye West anytime soon (in addition to London's Central Saint Martins College): Miami and Chicago's courthouses. A lawsuit in which another rapper accused West of stealing the lyrics for "Stronger" was dismissed last week, and while Suge Knight's lawsuit against Yeezy is reportedly going to be settled.

Virginia rapper Vince P. (a.k.a. Vince Peters) claimed that Kanye West's hit, from 2007's Graduation, was a cribbed version of his own song of the same title. Vince P alleged that in November 2006 he played his song for John Monopoly, who at the time was a member of West's inner circle. West's legal representatives, Pryor Cashman LLP, requested that the case be dismissed, citing that the songs were not similar enough to warrant copyright infringement. Judge Virginia M. Kendall of the Northern District of Illinois agreed and granted Cashman's motion to dismiss the case on March 3.

Marion "Suge" Knight's lawsuit against West stemmed from a shooting in 2005 at a Miami Beach nightclub. The infamous Death Row Records co-founder was shot in the leg at a pre-VMA party held for West at the Shore Club. Knight sued the Chicago rapper, claiming he was ultimately responsible for the suspect security at the venue.

Late last year a Miami judge threw out Knight's lawsuit, which sought over a million dollars in damages, due to a lack of evidence. Knight still had the option to appeal, but he ultimately decided to stop pursuing the case. There have been reports that an undisclosed settlement between both parties was reached.

"I thought we had a good chance at an appeal, but Suge's mom was very ill and that weighed heavily with him," Marc Brumer, Knight's attorney, told MTV News. "I can't talk about anything else but the case has been settled."

West's civil litigator Adam Josephs of Josephs Jack was unable to comment on the actual settlement but said, "It's nice to put this matter behind us and move on."

If Miley Cyrus seemed loose hosting "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend, it's because she was.

"SNL" castmember Kristen Wiig tells MTV News the teen queen was not only a blast to have on the set, but also didn't seem to suffer from any anxiety about doing live TV.

"Yes, Miley [was fun to work with]," Wiig said while in New York on Monday (March 7) doing press for her alien-comedy flick, "Paul." "She's cool. It was really, really fun."

Guest host Miley poked fun at her own infamous bong video controversy, as well as at Justin Bieber — whom she played alongside Vanessa Bayer, who just so happens to play Cyrus on the "SNL" skit "The Miley Cyrus Show." Cyrus even went for Lindsay Lohan and Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie. And it was Cyrus' willingness to have a little fun at her own expense that made her the perfect host, according to Wiig.

"Yeah, she was great," the actress said. "She was up for anything. That's always, to me, what makes a host fun to have around. They'll make fun of themselves or how the media perceives them. She was up for anything, which was so great."

In addition to the performance by the Strokes, some of the night's other highlights included Miley's musical number "I'm Sorry I'm Not Perfect" and "Disney Channel Acting School," where Miley and fellow Disney star Raven Symoné (played by Kenan Thompson) taught such subjects such as "Reacting to Stinky Feet" and "Spying in a Doorway," required skills for any actor on a Disney series.

Things have taken a turn for the worse for Charlie Sheen, who has been fired from his CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men," according to a statement from Warner Bros. on Monday (March 7).

"After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men' effective immediately," the statement reads.

As for whether the comedy series will continue its run, a CBS spokesperson told CNN, "No decision has been made."

Despite the termination, the 45-year-old actor seems to be coping well with the announcement, even deeming it "very good news." In a reaction statement to TMZ, Sheen said, "They continue to be in breach, like so many whales. It is a big day of gladness at the Sober Valley Lodge because now I can take all of their bazillions, never have to look at whatshisc--k again and I never have to put on those silly shirts for as long as this warlock exists in the terrestrial dimension."

News of the star's termination isn't too surprising as the actor and "Two and a Half Man" creator Chuck Lorre haven't exactly seen eye to eye in recent weeks. Production for the hit comedy series was discontinued for the remainder of the season after Sheen called Lorre "a clown" during a syndicated radio program. Like his recent rebuttal, TV's highest-paid actor wanted the last word, so he turned to TMZ to continue to bash the producer in an open letter.

"What does this say about Haim Levine [the name he claims is Chuck Lorre's real name] after he tried to use his words to judge and attempt to degrade me. I gracefully ignored this folly for 177 shows. ... I fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can't handle my power and can't handle the truth," he wrote.

"Last Comic Standing" finalist Mike DeStefano died Sunday after suffering a massive heart attack, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A rep for the 44-year-old DeStefano, who was a finalist on the NBC reality competition, confirmed the news in a statement to TMZ. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a dear friend, a true gentleman, a great comic, and a fierce warrior, Mike DeStefano," his rep said. "Mike had a lot of wisdom to share with the world from his own life lessons and he always did it with laughter and a smile.

"It's hard to think that there won't be any more 'hey sweetheart' calls, because Mike always made my day with his mix of kindness and warmth AND profanity filled rants against the wrongs of the world. He was the genuine article. We love you and will miss you, Mike," the statement continued.

A former heroin addict, DeStefano had been clean for 11 years as well as HIV positive at the time of his death. Prior to competing on "Last Comic Standing," the Bronx native had appeared on other shows, including "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham." The comic was set to take his one-man show "A Cherry Tree" back to his home borough on Wednesday. He had also recently wrapped up a line of sold-out shows called "Drugs, Disease and Death: A Comedy."

It's easy to think big when you're the underdog. And that's definitely the position New Jersey "American Idol" auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night's post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show.

"I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I've always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back," she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. "But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well."

After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You," which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13.

Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show's history. "That was unbelievable," Jackson told her. "That's how you do it!"

Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms ("You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF" — WTF??), agreed with Jackson's assertion that she was "unbelievable," adding as well that it was "gorgeous." Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance "out of this world." "You were saving that for when it counts!" she teased Toscano.

Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. "I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I'm so happy that I did save it for when it counted," she said. "I've grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I'm so happy that that was my moment to shine."

Toscano will have to prove that she's more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week.

Coldplay Rep Shoots Down Rumors Of October Album Release

Despite rumors of a delay, the band's spokesperson says no release date was ever set.

You may already have an idea about what Coldplay's upcoming album is about — namely "love, addiction, OCD, escape and working for someone you don't like" — but up until now, you probably had no idea when the still-untitled disc would be hitting stores.

But when the band began lining up headlining dates on summer festivals (Glastonbury, T in the Park, etc.), fans interpreted that to mean that Coldplay were also readying their fifth full-length for release, meaning that a brand-new album should be only a few months away.

Of course, that optimism was dashed when a well-informed member of Coldplay fansite Coldplaying.com posted that the album had been pushed back until October, writing, "I can confirm the change of plans in the Coldplay camp regarding the schedule[d] release of LP5, originally before summer. Hope people can wait until October."

Given that this particular member had, in the past, seemed to have been privy to some top-secret Coldplay information (he/she claimed to have heard "Violet Hill," the first single off the band's Viva la Vida album, two weeks before the song premiered, and wrote about it in shockingly accurate terms to prove it), word of the October release quickly began spreading as chapter and verse amongst Coldplay fans.

The only problem? According to a spokesperson for the band, there is no release date for Coldplay's new album, nor has there ever been one.

"A release date has not yet been set for Coldplay's next studio album," that spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to MTV News.

Coldplay are currently working on the new album with frequent collaborators Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. Last month, frontman Chris Martin told BBC's Radio 1 the album is a "thinly veiled account of what happens within the group," but added that it's not entirely about interpersonal conflict.

"[It] also has a lot of uplifting stuff," he said. "It's supposed to be about life, the good stuff and the bad stuff. Everything."

Madonna's Daughter's Role In 'W.E.' Is Revealed

Madonna wrapped production on "W.E.," her second directorial effort, in October, and now reports are suggesting she's looking to premiere the movie at the Venice Film Festival, which takes place from August 31 to September 10.

The film's co-star, Abbie Cornish, not only confirmed the possibility of a Venice debut to MTV News, but also revealed the mysterious role Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, will be playing.

"I heard yesterday," Cornish told us about Venice, while promoting her upcoming thriller, "Limitless." "That'd be amazing."

"W.E" follows a "Julie & Julia"-esque dual story line, one featuring Cornish as a contemporary woman obsessed with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and another focusing on the royal couple itself. News that Lourdes would appear in a small role surfaced last fall, when photos of the teen in a schoolgirl's uniform popped up online, but until now the nature of her part was unclear. Cornish's character, it turns out, has a deep connection to that of Lourdes.

"She actually plays a younger version of my character," Cornish said, adding that because they portray the same person, they never got to share actual screen time. "She's a super-cute, younger version of my character."

"W.E." marks Madonna's second feature following "Filth and Wisdom," which hit only a handful of theaters in 2008. The new project, the pop star turned filmmaker said last year, has been an obsession of hers even before "Filth and Wisdom" and took her two-and-a-half years to write. "I made 'Filth and Wisdom' because I realized that I didn't really have a right to make a bigger film until I made a smaller film — and learned how to make a film," she said.

According to Cornish, though, the Queen of Pop is a born filmmaker. "Madonna is a natural director," the actress told us. "It's in her nature. She's a Leo and she really represents the Leos very well. She's a very smart woman, very well read. She really absorbs a lot about whatever she's involved in. I think she really loves learning. It was interesting to see her evolve throughout the filmmaking process. She's such a cool woman."

Britney Spears and Madonna have reunited again, at least on the cover of Out magazine. Pop music's crème de la crème will share the April cover of the popular gay magazine's first-ever "Ladies We Love" issue, marking the publication's first dual-cover release.

While Spears teamed up with photographer Ruven Afanador for her shoot, Madonna's photo spread dates back to the entertainer's early career, with previously unseen shots by photographer Richard Corman from 1982. In a post on Out.com, the folks at the mag said that they wanted to shine light on female icons popular among the gay community, writing, "We're dedicating our entire April issue to the women who inspire, scandalize, educate, and excite us — in a different way than they excite the other boys."

The "Ladies We Love" issue hits newsstands on March 29, the same day as Spears' Femme Fatale hits stores. However, Out is giving fans an early look at their feature with the pop princess by posting the full Spears interview and photo shoot on their website on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

News of Britney's Out magazine spread comes days after the "Hold It Against Me" singer's feature in V magazine made its way to the Internet. In the issue, Spears opens up about the musical direction of Femme Fatale.

"I like music that makes you move and connects with your soul. I like to feel inspired right away when I listen to new music," she says. "I always have songs being sent to me from new artists and producers from all over the world, which is really cool. From there I just follow my heart."

Thia Megia Using Past TV Experience As Tool On 'American Idol'

There's a bonus to being the baby in the bunch and 16-year-old Thia Megia knows it. Along with Lauren Alaina, Megia is one of the youngest contestants in "American Idol" history and her slow, steady rise into contention has earned consistent praise from the judges and a healthy online fanbase.

She's also crafty, using her experience as a 14-year-old finalist on the 2009 edition of "America's Got Talent" to help her advance on "Idol."

"I love being different. I'm an Aquarius, I love being creative, I love to write — poetry is my favorite hobby other than singing," said Megia, noting that her other favorite hobbies include "messing around" on the piano and the guitar. "I daydream much more often than I should, I'm full of dreams. ... This is a whole vision that evolved into a reality."

Megia punched her ticket into the top 13 last Wednesday with a thrilling cover of the "Fame" song "Out Here on My Own," which the judges said showed off her near-perfect pitch. Though her time on "Talent" was cut short, she learned how to work hard from that run and learned a lot about perseverance.

"I didn't stop," she said. "That would be my advice to everyone else: Never give up, no matter how hard it is. It's always going to be a steep climb, but the view is going to be amazing."

Megia will get another chance to show her fortitude on Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performances and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week.
