Lady Gaga Goes The Distance At Montreal Monster Ball Tour Kickoff

Epic show runs more than two hours and includes Gaga's brand-new track 'You and I.'

MONTREAL -- "I'm going to give you the best show of your life tonight. You're not going to be able to walk in the morning."

That's what Lady Gaga said Monday night (June 28), right around what could've conservatively been called "the midway point" of her marathon set, and she wasn't kidding. Because by the time she finally wrapped the two-plus hour show at the Bell Centre -- a show that was also the kickoff of the North American leg of her revamped (and seemingly unending) Monster Ball Tour -- there wasn't a calf muscle left unquivered. If it wasn't the best show her "little monsters" had ever seen, it certainly was the longest.

An over-the-top (even by her rather lofty standards) mélange of, well, practically everything, the new Monster Ball features Gaga at her most outrageous, unhinged and (at times) sublimely ridiculous, a whirling, whooshing beast of a thing that's long in practically every conceivable way: long on style, long on attitude, even long on inspiration. Loosely based on a narrative arc (yes, there's an entire story line this time around) that recalls "The Wizard Of Oz," "West Side Story," "Metropolis" and even "Angels In America," packed with more wattage than an overheated power plant and more costume changes than a thousand Vegas reviews, it's the kind of show that leaves you with wide eyes, ringing ears, aching limbs and absolutely zero chance of making it to work in the morning.

In other words, you should probably go see it, though not entirely for the spectacle. There are also plenty of real, genuinely tender moments in Gaga's show, or at least there were on Monday night in Montreal. She spoke from the heart, she cried a bit, she cracked jokes, shoot, she even played a brand-new song ... and really, those were the bits of the show that resounded loudest.

But first things first. Much like earlier runs, this version of the Monster Ball opened with a booming, club-ready mix of "Dance in the Dark" and arty, black-and-white images of Gaga projected on a retractable screen. The music got louder and the images quicker, and then, very much to the delight of the Montreal crowd, their heroine appeared -- in impressively shoulder-padded silhouette -- bathed in purple light, making the famed "monster claw" gesture with her hands. The marathon was under way.

The screen was lifted, revealing a noirish New York streetscape, all twisting fire escapes and neon signs. In the middle of the stage sat a smoking car, broken down, as Gaga's backup dancers/ character actors would soon reveal in a few delightfully cheesy lines of dialogue, on the way to the Monster Ball (the search for the mythic party, "the greatest of all time," according to Gaga, makes up the sorta story line of the show). In the mood to help, Gaga descended a rickety fire escape, tossed off her shoulder-padded outfit to reveal a leopard-print one-piece, and lifted the hood of the old jalopy, only to reveal a keyboard, on which she played the opening notes of "Just Dance."

The song kicked in, the neon lights started blinking in syncopation (some of which even revealed cleverly concealed dirty phrases: "Hotel Hass" became, appropriately enough, "Hot Ass"), and the Montreal audience lost their minds. Gaga vamped it up to the hilt, strutting down a catwalk that jutted out into the audience, cracking a smile, shaking her hips just so. Backed by no less than a dozen dancers and a gaggle of musicians that included two guitarists, a violinist and a harpist (!), there was an added oomph to the whole thing, certainly a harbinger of things to come.

For the next hour or so, the production was in full swing. "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" saw Gaga scaling various pieces of scaffolding (and urging the audience to "get those guns out and shoot that money ... you don't need it!"). "The Fame" had her rising from beneath the stage, playing her bass/ keytar/ Roland 808 thingy dressed like a Christmas present. "Love Game," which Gaga performed with the aid of a gilded subway car and an actual disco stick (one that doubled as a spotlight she shone on the audience) was fierce, and "Boys Boys Boys" was a hot, throbbing number, featuring her muscly male dancers cavorting in little more than spandex shorts (she dedicated it to "The Canadian gay boys").

"I've been on vacation for three weeks," she laughed as the crowd whooped. "I've been watching that TV show 'Cops,' and I've been partying in New York, and I've been cooking for my dad, and I've been drinking lots of light beer, so naturally I'm f---ing ready to party."

No kidding. After a quick costume change (she emerged looking like a cross between Missy Elliott in her "The Rain" video and Rick James), the New York scenery disappeared around her, and she went into a fierce version of "Money Honey," complete with an extended keytar solo. That was followed by a positively joyous version of "Telephone" (sadly, no Beyoncé), which ended in a cacophony of guitars and strings. And then, Gaga slowed things down just a tad.

After another break, she appeared atop her piano, a single spotlight shining down on her. She did her usual cabaret stuff--a version of "Brown Eyes" that had her crouching on her bench and holding notes for downright silly lengths of time, and "Speechless" saw her break out the old flaming piano. After a rather hilarious discussion about why she decided to start sporting fake nails ("Why should I not feel like a lady just because I'm excellent at piano?" she giggled), she tested the audience with a few notes of "You and I," the brand-new track she premiered last week at Elton John's White Tie And Tiara Ball. When the crowd whistled their approval, she made an impromptu decision:

"I'll play a little of it," she laughed. "You know I can't say no to you because I love you so much."

Of course, she ended up playing all of the song, and it was epic. Pounding away on the keys, singing for the rafters, Gaga positively killed the song, filling the Bell Centre with audible gasps from the audience and real, genuine emotion. Her band hammered on behind her, and the whole thing built to an arena-size crescendo before Gaga brought it all home, and, as the crowd cheered wildly, another anthem was born.

Of course, from there, things got a little spotty. This was, after all, a very long show (a definite four-quarters kind of affair), and let's just say the third quarter, with its wonky Central Park-as-imagined-by-Fritz Lang set, indulgent takes on "Alejandro" (complete with a replica of the Bethesda Fountain that poured blood), "Monster" (more blood, this time gushing from Gaga's chest), and "Show Me Your Teeth" (no additional blood, only an insufferably long bit where she introduced the members of her band), was a bit of a mess. If ever there were a time to slip out to the bathrooms, well, this was it.

The show reached its conclusion with an epic battle against an evil angler fish (for real) on "Paparazzi," and then the set-closing "Bad Romance," which Gaga performed in her planetoid sphere (oh, and at this point, after vanquishing the angler fish, she and her comrades officially discover the Monster Ball, just in case you were wondering). All that was left was a richly deserved curtain call, an extended bow and a snarl from Mother Monster. Even after Gaga and company had left the stage, the audience inside Bell Centre stood and cheered, whistled and clapped. And then they did all three of those things again. Only louder.

And Gaga deserved all of it. Aside from a few missteps (which can only be expected in a production of this magnitude), the new Monster Ball Tour is a raw, rousing, rollicking success, something that's partially due to the sheer spectacle of the show, but mostly due to the unyielding will, spirit and talent of Gaga herself. It may be her crowning achievement, it may not, but it's certainly, absolutely worth it. Word to the wise, however: make sure you stretch before you go. Gaga's out to make you hurt this time around. And she will.

Top 10 'The Hills' Moments, From Speidi's Wedding To Lauren's Farewell

We pick the best so far, as the reality series celebrates its 100th episode on Tuesday.

We're more than halfway through the final season of "The Hills" and Tuesday's (June 29) show will mark the 100th episode of the MTV reality series. Even with Lauren Conrad long-gone, Speidi, Stephanie, Audrina, Kristin and the rest of the crew have been up to some serious shenanigans this season.

Leading up to the show's pivotal 100th episode, MTV News is giving you a cheat sheet of the show's top 10 moments — a list of some of this season's top moments so far is on the way — all to help you get caught up before the "Hills" finale airs July 13.

#10: Stephanie Pratt's Interview With Kelly Cutrone
After landing a coveted job interview with People's Revolution PR maven Kelly Cutrone, Pratt seemed at a loss as to how to actually leave a good impression on your potential boss. For one, telling her your objective is to become a handbag designer? Bad idea. Did she get the job? Of course she did — then she lost it.

#9: Justin Is Christened Justin Bobby
Before Audrina brought her new guy over to meet Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth, the two pals went back and forth over what to call him. "His name is Justin, but he, like, wants to change it to Bobby," Lauren explained to Lo. When the hairstylist/drummer arrived at the girls' apartment, Lo asked if it was OK to call him Justin Bobby, bestowing him with the most memorable nickname in "Hills" history.

#8: Heidi Crashes LC's Work Party
As an intern at Teen Vogue, Lauren was just hoping to stay in the good graces of her boss, Lisa Love. Her party-girl roommate, Heidi Montag, however, just wanted to have a good time. She showed up uninvited to the bash with a small entourage and nearly ended Conrad's internship.

#7 & #6: Holly Gets Tipsy, Heidi Marries Spencer
While it was probably shocking for bride-to-be Montag to watch her sister Holly's drunken antics at her rehearsal dinner, it was probably even more shocking for viewers who realized that Heidi and Spencer really did intend to get married.

#5: Kristin Declares War
There has been bickering on "The Hills," but nothing seemed quite as vicious as the fight between Kristin Cavallari and Audrina, who fought over Justin Bobby at a rooftop party during season five. Plus, until then, we'd never heard any of the show's stars utter anything as juicy as Kristin's now infamous "It's on, bitch!"

#4: Heidi Moves Out
After many ups and many more downs, the dynamic duo that was once Lauren and Heidi really began to fall apart, when one major down, Spencer Pratt, came between the roomies. Heidi moved out of her apartment with LC to pursue her relationship with Spencer. And although the once-close pair sometimes crossed paths, their friendship was never the same.

#3: LC Chooses Love Over Paris
Maybe Lisa Love was right when she predicted LC was "going to always be known as the girl who didn't go to Paris." But at the time, Conrad really thought she had something going on with boyfriend Jason Wahler. Her pal Whitney Port went instead and Lauren had a pretty terrible summer.

#2 & #1: LC, Heidi Reconcile, LC Exits
It was the moment that had Heidi, LC and "Hills" fans in tears. For a brief moment, the onetime besties reconciled and reminisced about what had made them friends in the first place: They actually liked each other. But the brief reconciliation was too little, too late.

What is your favorite moment from "The Hills"? Let us know in the comments!

"The Hills" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Pill Went From 'Zero To 60' To Become 'Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010' Candidate

"Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" Candidate: Pill

Fourteen months ago, Pill had the trap going ham for his street pharmaceuticals. The young rapper struck gold when he dropped his rugged video for "Trap Goin' Ham." Rapping with a Corona in his hand, he showed women in his neighborhood smoking Newports and dudes rolling blunts.

It was uncut, real and raw, and it gave you a flashback to that unflinching peak of ATL when some of the greats, such as Outkast and T.I., showed their lives in Georgia. Since then, Pill has become a favorite of hip-hop bloggers with his mixtapes 4180: The Prescription, 4075: The Refill and 1140: The Overdose.

"It's surreal, man. When you start off, you hope you can make it to this place," Pill said of his growing popularity. "4180 was my first solo project ever. I went from zero to 60."

With that trilogy done, Pill is working on a brand-new tape, sans the medicinal theme, with DJ Holiday and the Empire. His debut LP should be dropping sometime in the fourth quarter or top of 2011.

"The Medicine, I'm working on it. I wanna make sure I don't rush it. Once you get the deal, you feel like, 'I gotta drop the album,' " Pill said. "I wanna make sure everything is new, everything is fresh. I got music for it. But I just wanna make sure all the feelings I go through, all the experiences, I wanna incorporate everything. Look forward to The Medicine. Not too many features. I don't wanna crowd my first album with a bunch of features and make it a compilation CD. I want it to be more of me giving the people who I am and letting them see where I come from and hear my testimony."

Although the album is still being recorded, Pill said he has a keeper. It's one of his most personal projects yet.

" 'A Song for My Momma,' " Pill said when asked about a must-hear on his LP. "My momma passed away. I went in the studio, and I had been so stressed that week. That night, I was out clubbing, and I got a little tipsy. I was in New York. When I got back, I burst into tears. It caught up with me. I was like, 'Damn, I'm actually doing what I told my momma I was gonna do.' It was like, 'Man, I gotta make her a song.' I was supposed to make her a song, and I been running from it. I knew it was gonna take a lot of emotion and pain to do it. So when I got to the studio, I was boo-hooing still. My pages [that I write my rhymes on] was wet up, but I got through it."

Pill and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" — and the winner will be decided by you!

Cast your vote for the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" right here. The top five will be revealed beginning July 19, and the winner will be announced on the "Sucker Free Summit" July 25!

Max B Recalls Making <i>A Wave Called Yes</i> Tape While On Trial

'For the music to come out that good while I was in trial, that was surprising to me,' he tells Mixtape Daily.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape: A Wave Called Yes

Headliners: Max B and Young Riot

Key Cameos: "Living the Life" (featuring Curren$y)

Essential Info: Max B said his wave just doesn't dry up. While the New York MC awaits his appeal of a decades-long prison sentence for manslaughter and various other charges, his music is still being heard. Amalgam Digital recently released a mixtape by the spitter and the upstart Young Riot.

"That's me and my young god, Young Riot," Max said on the phone from the New Jersey State Penitentiary. "He's holding it down while I'm up in the spot. We got a few treats on there. I remember the night we did them. [The executives at Amalgam] drove me out to Boston, 2 in the morning. I went out there and drank a 60 of Hennessey and knocked out the whole tape. Knocked the tape out in one night. That's what professionals do. This is when I was going to trial. They came and got me on a Friday or Saturday, I had to be back on Sunday, Monday morning to go back to court. It was a real busy week. I was really busy on trial. For the music to come out that good while I was on trial, that was surprising to me. That just let me know, no matter how long I'm gone from the game, I'm still a natural. I still can make quality work. I'mma still be Biggavelli."

Amalgam is going to let A Wave Called Yes rock for the summer then drop Max's solo LP, Vigilante Season. B recently won a court case to be freed from his contract with Jim Jones, who discovered him.

"We recorded 40 songs in three weeks," Max said of his dealings with Amalgam last year. At the time, he was still contractually bound to Jones and did not know if the music would be allowed to be released. "Nonstop in the summertime. Vigilante was real special to me. It was like they giving me a shot. Even if it wasn't coming out, they gave me the feel of just going to do the album. I was doing it my way."

As for when Max will be free to record again, he says it's in God's hands now. The rapper's appeal could take between 18 months and three years to be resolved. If he loses that appeal, it could be an additional three years before he can appeal again. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September 2009 for conspiracy, robbery, manslaughter and a myriad of other crimes. The jurors in the case felt there was ample evidence to convict him of the 2005 robbery of two men in a Fort Lee, New Jersey, hotel room. One of the men was shot and killed. Max wasn't at the scene of the crime, but the prosecutors built their case with him as the mastermind. Max still denies being involved. His stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam was also convicted in the matter, and Max's former girlfriend Gina Conway was involved as well but eventually testified against the men. Leerdam is serving time along with Max.

"I always kinda had that problem with finding the right people," Max said of the choices that led him to prison, right as he appeared to be on the verge of mainstream recognition. "People always say you gotta surround yourself with people who have your best interests in mind. I always found that hard to do, because when you're in my situation, everybody acts like they got your best interests, but they don't. We know who got your best interests — your mother, your father, your kid's mother, whatever. Your immediate family. But you can't have them on the road with you every day. You gotta be around your n---as.

"You gotta pick them carefully," he added. "I always had a problem with picking the right people I surround myself with. That's always been my downfall, ever since I was a little kid. That's something I gotta learn off experience. This is definitely an experience. The toughest sh-- I been through in my life. You already know when I beat this, it's gonna be beautiful. I just can't wait. That's the only thing keeping me going. Me saying [to myself], 'Max, when you beat this, it's gonna be a whole new lane out there for you.' Me being able to attack this sh-- right and make a living for my mother and my kids and be a good productive [citizen] in society. I'm a G. My moms raised me as a G. The only reason you don't hear me stressing out, I know I'm coming home and I know I'm coming home soon."

3OH!3 Talk 'Rad' New Album, <i>Streets Of Gold</i>

'We were inspired by gold,' Nathaniel Motte jokes to MTV News.

For 3OH!3's album Streets of Gold, out Tuesday (June 29), they decided to seek inspiration from things they know a lot about — like partying. Would you expect anything else from the "Don't Trust Me" singers?

"Want did really well and kept doing better, so we didn't really have time [to make a follow-up]," Nathaniel Motte told MTV News of their breakthrough album. "We finally carved out some time to make this album, which is rad. We were inspired by gold."

The duo also wrote music about their new rock-star lifestyle. "I think there's a few completely different things on the album," Sean Foreman said. "Some of it's really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There's some heavier songs [too]."

But don't think the party-song dudes have left behind the sounds that made them household names. If you hear any new vibes on the album, they say it's just because they have grown as musicians. "While we were touring, we managed to work in the studio, and I think we've learned so much as songwriters and as producers making music and making tracks," Motte said, adding that this album is a "more developed [and] more defined album. It's inspired by a lot of stuff."

Some of that stuff includes first love, as evidenced on their Ke$ha-fied single "First Kiss," and, well, house parties. "I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further," Foreman said. "You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like 'House Party' is crazy and has the craziest production, and it's just a fun anthem that you'd want to sing with all your friends. And then there's stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that."

Did Chris Brown Redeem Himself At BET Awards? Experts Weigh In

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 05:49 AM PDT

'He couldn't [apologize] enough; he had to prove it,' Vibe contributor Erik Parker tells MTV News.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Chris Brown was the water-cooler topic of the day after his stirring Michael Jackson tribute at the 2010 BET Awards on Sunday night, when he broke down in tears as he attempted to sing "Man in the Mirror." The embattled R&B singer reminded the world of his talent as he re-created MJ's magical dance steps and sang a medley of his songs.

But Brown's onstage breakdown divided viewers: Was he emotionally overwhelmed by the moment, or were his tears a publicity stunt designed to garner favor after his assault of former girlfriend Rihanna?

"You forget what a good performer he is. I think over the past year, so much has been overshadowing that, from his album not selling to him claiming record stores are boycotting him to him being denied entry into Europe," Alicia Quarles, Associated Press entertainment editor, told MTV News. "You forget that he's a triple threat. The breakdown, I was skeptical of it. I didn't know if it was genuine, if he was reflecting on everything he had gone through or if it was a PR opportunity. Either way, it was good for him.

"It was supposed to be Prince's big night, and El DeBarge made a comeback, Kanye West — but no one is talking about any of them," Quarles continued. "Everybody is talking about Chris Brown, and it's about doing something positive for once."

Since Brown assaulted Rihanna, he's tried to apologize and relay his remorse, but the singer stumbled in an interview with Larry King when he said he couldn't remember much about the altercation. He told MTV News he felt ashamed of his actions, but no matter what he said, he found himself still reviled by many. After his teary performance of "Man in the Mirror," however, the tide of support seemed to turn his way.

"I think people didn't want to hear words from him. I don't think they wanted to hear the words 'I'm sorry,' " explained Erik Parker, who wrote a cover story on Brown for Vibe. "He couldn't say anything enough; he had to prove it. For people to accept it, they had to first make him pay for it somehow, meaning put him through the wringer and get out all the anger they feel toward him. But he was unable to articulate how truly sorry he felt with just his words."

Parker recalled how upset Brown was that he was unable to perform at last year's BET Awards, which occurred just days after Jackson's death. He said it was fitting for Brown to find some sort of salvation one year after he would have originally had a chance to redeem himself onstage.

Billboard magazine's Gail Mitchell was in the house for Brown's performance and said from the time he stepped onstage to the time he exited, the crowd was on its feet. The way Mitchell sees it, Brown has already admitted his fault and is diligently serving his community-labor service as part of his punishment for his actions, so she doesn't understand why the singer isn't allowed to move on more than a year after the assault.

Brown explained himself perfectly, Mitchell said, when he accepted the Fandemonium Award later in the evening: "When he said, 'I let you down earlier ... I won't let that happen again,' I think that says it all."

What did you think of Chris Brown's performance and breakdown? Let us know in the comments.

Kristen Stewart Reveals Why She Dyed Her Hair 'Reddish Brown'

Kristen Stewart is used to all sorts of different hairstyles, having changed her hairdo drastically for her turn as Joan Jett in "The Runaways" opposite Dakota Fanning. But for her latest hair change, Stewart is going in the opposite direction from her "Runaways" style, looking instead for something brighter as she heads out "On the Road."

"It's kind of blond right now. Like, reddish brown. I'm doing it for 'On the Road,' " she told MTV News on the red carpet for a special screening of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" in New York on Monday night (June 28).

Stewart is taking a break from the supernatural world of "Twilight" for "On the Road," based on the acclaimed 1957 novel from writer Jack Kerouac. The story follows Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a youth who sets off on a cross-country road trip and meets a variety of notable characters, including the charismatic but deeply flawed Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund). Stewart will play Marylou, the on-again, off-again wife to Hedlund's character. "Twilight" fans aren't likely to get as passionate about Stewart's fictional relationship with Hedlund as they are in taking sides between Team Edward and Team Jacob, but Stewart herself said she's quite impressed with Hedlund as an actor.

"I've met him a bunch of times, and I've hung out with him twice," she said of her co-star. "He's a great guy. ... He's written crazy stuff for it. He's super into it. Not to sound ... I don't know how to put it. He's, like, so in character, and he's driving to Montreal. He's awesome. I'm really, really excited."

Stewart, Hedlund and Riley join actress Kirsten Dunst in the cast for "On the Road." The film will be directed by Walter Salles and executive-produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows' Trailer Teases Epic Finale

Harry's confrontation with Lord Voldemort takes center stage in the full-length sneak peek.
By Josh Wigler

The end is almost here for Harry Potter and his friends. The J.K. Rowling-penned novel series about a young boy who ultimately becomes a powerful wizard concluded with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," published in 2007. Three years later, that same final chapter is about to play out once again — this time, on the big screen.

Now, fans are getting their first look as to what lies ahead in the final "Harry Potter" adventure, with the first full-length trailer for "Deathly Hallows" debuting online early Monday evening (June 28). Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as Harry, Ron and Hermione in "Deathly Hallows," which has been divided into two films. Despite the decision to split the story in two, the feature-length trailer combines elements from both films for one epic masterpiece highlighting the final showdown between the Boy Who Lived and He Who Must Not Be Named.

The trailer begins ominously enough as an offscreen voice informs Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) that "there's no sign of him, my lord." The "him" in question quickly makes himself known, as Harry Potter (Radcliffe) emerges in a dark forest clearing, wand at the ready, eyes locked with the serpentine Voldemort's.

"Harry Potter," Voldemort hisses softly. "The Boy Who Lived ... come to die!"

Immediately thereafter, we're treated to a series of montage sequences offering glimpses at John Hurt's return to the role of wand-maker Ollivander, our hero's trek through the treacherous halls of Gringotts Wizarding Bank, Harry and Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) fleeing from Death Eaters on Sirius Black's (Garry Oldman) old flying motorcycle, a great conflict at the battle-ravaged Hogwarts castle and much more.

With barely a minute remaining in the trailer, we're returned to the conflict between Harry and Voldemort. The evil one clutches our hero's face with one hand, quietly asking: "Why do you live?" Harry proudly retorts: "Because I have something worth living for." Moments later, as the two rivals lock their wands in spellbinding battle, Voldemort offers the final words of the trailer: "Only I can live forever!"

The trailer describes "Deathly Hallows" as "the finale of the worldwide phenomenon, the motion picture event of a generation." Based on the footage seen here, those words are hardly an understatement. The first part of "Deathly Hallows" arrives in theaters this November, with the final installment in the "Harry Potter" series unfolding in July 2011.

T.I. Says Lady Gaga 'Transcends All Genres'

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 12:36 AM PDT

'She's a phenomenal talent,' Tip tells MTV News of his collaborator.
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kelly Marino

Lady Gaga is continuing her tradition of cross-genre collaborations, jumping in the studio with T.I. The pop spectacle has worked with rappers Wale and Kid Cudi, as well as R&B and pop supernova Beyoncé, and now Gaga has been in the lab with the King of the South.

While the ATL hip-hop titan and theatrical pop phenom might make an unlikely pair, T.I. said Gaga's ability to team up with a range of artists comes down to her undeniable skills.

"She's a phenomenal talent, and I think that talent transcends through all genres, all races, all religions, all countries," T.I. told MTV News.

Tip also added that fans of all genres are united on the dance floor and that Gaga's club-friendly hits are central to her appeal.

"I believe that that's one thing that everybody can agree on. If you like a song and I like a song, then we going to both dance and all that here together," Tip said. "I think that that's what she's the best example of."

While Tip gushed about Gaga, he remained tight-lipped about whether the pop star would make an appearance on his upcoming album, King Uncaged. "I'm not gonna let no cats out of no bags," T.I. said. "I think I probably told y'all too much already."

Back in May, T.I. told MTV News that Gaga brought out a different side of him in the studio. "See, this is the thing: We gonna go back in and record some more songs," T.I. said. "But the one we have right now is titled 'Lick It.' I think we both have a tendency to shock the world in a lot of different ways. I just tuned in to another side of T.I."

Nicki Minaj was one of the biggest winners at Sunday night's BET Awards, taking home Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist and scoring a collective trophy with Young Money for Best Group.

The saucy upstart has made a name for herself with her rollicking flow, but fans were buzzing about what they thought didn't come out of her mouth at the show, accusing the rap diva of lip-synching through her performances.

Minaj took to Twitter on Monday (June 28) to dispel rumors that she didn't bring all her skills to the stage.

"U could hear me in the auditorium but apparently not in TV land," she tweeted. The star also added that technical difficulties were at play. "Shout out to the sound guy."

However, the "Massive Attack" rapper assured fans that the sound issues will be cleared up when the network rebroadcasts the show. "They say it'll b fixed wen it re-airs. :/"

Overall, it was a busy night for Minaj. After winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist (a trophy she scored solely on the strength of her mixtapes and work with Young Money, since the star has not yet dropped a major-label debut) and calling for "positive energy" among women in hip-hop, the MC popped up in two different performances. She emerged from a cloud of smoke in a skintight catsuit and spit her rapid-fire verse for the remix of "Hello, Good Morning" during Diddy-Dirty Money's performance. She also helped close out the show, performing her collabo with Ludacris, "My Chick Bad," with Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee on drums and taking the stage again minutes later to rock DJ Khaled's posse cut "All I Do Is Win."

Do you think Minaj was lip-synching during her performances? Let us know in the comments.

Minaj and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" — and the winner will be decided by you!

Trey Songz is having a big year. He's already given a fearless performance on MTV's Unplugged and toured with Jay-Z on his Blueprint 3 Tour. And on Sunday night, he continued his fortunate streak, bravely covering Prince's classic "Purple Rain" at the 2010 BET Awards — as the Purple One looked on from the audience — and taking home the night's award for Best Male R&B Artist.

At a pre-awards-show event, Songz told MTV News he had more reason to be excited, opening up about how his upcoming Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour with R&B songstress Monica came together.

"She's kinda like a big sister to me, so we've had some conversations and we did a series of shows together, and I told her I wanted her to be involved," Songz explained. The crooner said he had a lot of love for his tourmate: "Monica has been doing her thing for a while now. I'm so happy for where she is in her career right now and she got a great album."

Like Monica, who gave viewers a glimpse into her world with her BET reality show "Monica: Still Standing," fans will soon be able to see what life is like for the Virginia soul man offstage in his new docu-series "Trey Songz: My Moment." The show, also airing on the network, chronicles the behind-the-scenes happenings of the singer's tour with Jay and premieres Tuesday night.

Of course, fans who aren't content to watch Monica and Trey Songz on the small screen, can always check out the duo on the road when the Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour — also the name of Songz' upcoming album — crisscrosses the U.S. later this summer.

Diddy Urges 'Stop The Hate' -- Was He Talking To 50 Cent?

'Hate is for suckers,' Bad Boy mogul says during the BET Awards post-show.

50 Cent and Rick Ross lyrically collided last year, and now it looks like the Miami rapper's new business partner is getting caught in the crossfire.

50 Cent has been taking shots at Diddy, Ross' manager, saying the hip-hop mogul is "senile" for thinking he could re-create his early career success with Ross at the helm instead of the Notorious B.I.G. Fif also called Diddy a "serpent" and a "bloodsucker" while conducting an interview with Boston's Jam'n 94.5 radio station. "His music sucks. It's bad," 50 said. "He's not an artist anyway, so it doesn't really matter."

Fif later disparaged Diddy during a concert. "F--- Diddy," 50 told the concertgoers. "Tell him I said that sh-- too."

Diddy appeared to fire back at 50, though, via the BET Awards post-show on Sunday night, although he never called the battle-ready rapper out by name.

"Check this out," the Bad Boy Records founder said as the show was signing off. "I love my people. Let's stop the hate, man. Congratulate. Hate is for suckers. If you hating, you a sucker, and you're ashy and your breath stink. And you know who I'm talking to, you hating-ass crab."

50 and Diddy had a longstanding business admiration for one another, but with the latter's recent alignment with Ross, it seems as if the civility has ended.

Fif and Ross began their quarrel last year when the Miami rapper lyrically referenced rumors that 50 Cent burned down the home of his former girlfriend and the mother of his son; 50 denied the accusation and was never charged in the incident. The two rappers spent a good part of last year trading dis rhymes and swapping even harsher comments in interviews, but in recent months, the beef seems to have subsided.

Do you think Diddy was addressing 50 Cent during the BET Awards post-show? Let us know in the comments below!

Steve Carell Leaving 'The Office'

'I just think it's time,' he says of his exit after next season.

Steve Carell has confirmed that he is leaving NBC's "The Office" after next season.

"I just think it's time," he told E! News on the red carpet for "Despicable Me," the upcoming animated movie he provides a voice for. "I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on, I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go."

Fans might disagree, but Carell seems to think the show can go on without his clueless boss, Michael Scott. "It doesn't certainly mean the end of the show," he said. "I think it's just a dynamic change to the show, which could be a good thing, actually. Add some new life and some new energy. ... I see it as a positive in general for the show."

While Carell was a "Daily Show" correspondent and Will Ferrell's weatherman sidekick in "Anchorman" prior to the 2005 premiere of the American "Office," the ad-lib-heavy comedy made him a household name. His breakout movie role in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" soon followed, and he's had a string of big-screen work since, from "Little Miss Sunshine" to the upcoming "Dinner for Schmucks" with Paul Rudd.

With his exit announcement, Carell expects things to be business as usual for the rest of the gang over at Dunder Mifflin.

"I didn't see it as a huge thing, and I certainly didn't anticipate any sort of hubbub over it," he said. "I'm just not going to extend my contract, but I didn't see it as a huge deal. And the show is great, and the ensemble is so strong, and the writers are great, so it's just one part of that ensemble drifting off. They've incorporated so many new characters and so many new, great story lines that I have no doubt it'll continue as strong if not stronger than ever."

What do you think of Steve Carell's exit from "The Office"? Let us know in the comments.

Max B Talks From Jail About Appealing 75-Year Sentence: 'I'll Be Home'

'I'm not worried about the sentence, because I'm not doing that time,' he tells MTV News.
By Shaheem Reid

As it stands right now, Max B is facing 75 years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault, robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon and conspiracy in 2009. But the New York MC said he's staying as positive as possible and operating under the radar.

When MTV News got him on the phone Monday (June 28) from New Jersey State Penitentiary in Trenton, he explained why he recently fired his trial lawyer, Gerald M. Saluti.

"Anytime you lose a trial, on most occasions, people will fire their trial lawyer," he said. "You would need to do something like that. For those who's not familiar with legal terms, it's called ineffective assistance of counsel — that's when your lawyer fails to do his obligated duties. I ain't supposed to be in here in the first place. My charges were excessive. I was never at the scene of the crime. It's very insufficient. Just off that alone, I'll be back. It ain't about me being convicted. It's about: Can this conviction stand up in an appellate court? If they deny me on this one, then I'mma do an interview and tell the people, 'Don't wait up on me.' It's gonna be about four, five, six years later than that."

Max (born Charlie Wingate) was convicted of masterminding the robbery of David Taylor and Allan Plowden. The pair was set up by Max's former girlfriend Gina Conway, who testified for the prosecution in the trial in exchange for a lighter sentence. Jurors felt that there was enough evidence to convict Max's stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam of being the gunman and murderer of Taylor. Although Max wasn't at the scene, jurors handed down a guilty verdict to him as well. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September, but he said the term was reduced to 40. The prosecutor in the case had not returned MTV News' calls for comment as of press time.

"The sentence wasn't really nothing," Max said. "It was the 'guilty' that was more effective. The part when the jurors say 'guilty.' That hurts more than the sentence itself. At that time, I'm coming to court every day. I got the cameras on me. I got my girls waiting outside. I got French [Montana] and them n---as in the parking lot. My Beamer is parked in the lot. My jewelry is on. But now, when they say I'm guilty, I gotta take off my watch. I gotta take off my chain. I gotta pass it off. I pass off my car keys, my apartment keys, and I gotta walk to the back. I can't walk out that gate. I gotta walk to the back and get locked up. That's the part that hurt me the most. The sentence, by the time I got to that point, I didn't hear none of that. I was already deaf to that sh--. My focus was already, 'All right, we trying to get back.' I'm not worried about the sentence, because I'm not doing that time. That's not a number to me. They could've gave me a billion years, that sh-- is not gonna stand up. That has to stand up in an appellate court. Now if [an appeals court] say, 'Charlie Wingate, we found no error, you can't come home' — once I exhaust all my remedies, that's different. But it's still early. I'm on my direct appeal. I'll be home."

It could be quite some time. Max said, realistically, he'll have to do at least another year and a half in jail.

"They should feel grateful. They should be thankful they got another chance," Max said of his peers, such as Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and T.I., who were all sentenced to around a year in prison. "Even though I got another chance, it might not come as easy and quick. My sh-- might take up to three years for me to get outta here. It might be 18 months. But that's just the worst-case scenario. The only person I felt really caught a rough deal was Remy [Ma]. Our situations was similar, as far as the lawyer and stuff go. [Remy] was working and not really focusing on the case at hand. Same thing with me. I was working, not focusing on the case at hand that mattered. And the end, when I had to go in that courtroom, I wasn't prepared. I just let my lawyer do whatever. That's a lesson. You got be on top of lawyers, you gotta do your own studying when you get situations like that. You can't put your faith in his hands. They're only human. Humans disappoint people. You gotta put your faith in God. You gotta work hard. It's gonna be all right."

In the meantime, Max's work will be heard. He recorded dozens of tracks before going to prison, and the music will be brought to the fans by the label Amalgam Digital. The company just put out the Mixtape A Wave Called Yes, which features Max and his rap accomplice Young Riot. Max's next solo LP, Vigilante Season, is set to drop later this fall.

Look for more of Max as he expounds on both projects Tuesday in Mixtape Daily.

Lil Wayne posted the third letter to his fans on his website, WeezyThanxYou.com, on Monday (June 28). The post follows Weezy's Mother's Day letter written last month and an initial note in April written when he first launched the site from prison to communicate with fans.

In the new message, Wayne writes that he hopes his fans are enjoying their summer and profusely thanked everyone for their support, from the pictures he's received to all the letters sent to him at the Eric M. Taylor detention center at New York's Rikers Island. The rapper only gave a short update about his life behind bars, saying he was doing well.

"On my end, I'm alive, breathing and blessed," Wayne wrote. "You already know how I'm passing time — reading and working out."

The Young Money boss also gave a shout-out to his artists and said the collective had made him proud the night before, as both Drake and Nicki Minaj scored hardware Sunday night at the 2010 BET Awards.

Wayne then went on to personally thank nearly 100 supporters who've written him letters of encouragement, responding to individuals, including Karla Moy, who runs Drake's official fan website, and Vanessa Satten, the editor of XXL magazine.

"First, I thank you for your thoughts and prayers," he wrote to followers Ashley and Lil Mackenzie. "I would also like you to know that your letter touched my heart. I wasn't able to keep the wristbands but thank you anyway. Gudda and I send our deepest love to you and Lil Mack."

"Cool middle name," Wayne told Kyle Rockin McLaughlin. "And I'll be in W. Palm one day. Hope you're there."

The rapper is almost halfway through his prison term and appears to be ready to get back to his career, as he told Satten he hopes to grace the cover of the magazine again soon; earlier this month the Cash Money Records superstar recorded a verse from prison for a remix of Drake's "Light Up."

"Thank you for the love and I can't wait to be on the cover again," Wayne wrote.

Amy Locane's real life is playing out like a scene in the original "Melrose Place," the 1990s TV series she co-starred in. On Sunday night, the 38-year-old actress was charged with killing someone in a drunk-driving accident.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office says Locane ran into the passenger side of another car in Montgomery, New Jersey, killing a woman who was sitting in the front seat, TMZ reports.

The car's driver has serious injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital; Locane, who also had credits in "Airheads" and "Cry-Baby," was arrested at the scene and charged with a DUI. She was taken to a different hospital for treatment. The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the actress confessed to police that she'd consumed several glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel.

The prosecutor's office says Locane was involved in a minor hit-and-run accident right before the fatal crash. According to police, she had rear-ended a car a few miles away from the fatal crash, and when the driver of the other car tried to call police, the actress got back into her SUV and drove off, "swerving and knocking down several mailboxes," the witness told police.

She is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by auto. Officers said she smelled of alcohol, and they reported that the actress' eyes were bloodshot and glassy and that her speech was slurred.

If convicted, she faces five to 10 years in prison. Bail hasn't been set.

All Time Low, Third Eye Blind Frontmen Bond At Bamboozle

'I was nervous when you guys first joined on,' ATL's Alex Gaskarth tells Stephan Jenkins. 'I'm a fan.'

The eclectic traveling carnival that is the Bamboozle Roadshow came to an end over the weekend in Boston, but the "bro"-bonds that were formed on tour will go on. MTV News followed the action all week, catching up with all of the acts, from pop-punkers Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte to electro-funksters LMFAO and 3OH!3.

While the acts were diverse, one common theme among the musicians was their near-unanimous tendency to geek out over fellow headliners Third Eye Blind, with many calling the band one of the biggest influences on the current generation of rock groups.

On the penultimate tour stop, at New York's Nassau Coliseum, we caught up with All Time Low singer Alex Gaskarth and listened in on his talk with one of his musical idols, Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. It turns out the two were not only fans of one another, but also formed a newfound friendship.

"A couple days [into the tour], I saw you guys play, and you guys are like this ongoing sea of energy," Jenkins told Gaskarth. "That, and you guys have the best banter, because what you do every night it's so changed up ... it's really authentic."

Gaskarth repaid the compliment, recounting how nearly every night on the Bamboozle fest, everyone met up by the stage to catch a glimpse of Third Eye Blind's set. On a few dates, Gaskarth was even lucky enough to join the band onstage for a performance of their mega-hit "Jumper."

"I think that was the craziest thing about when you guys actually did join on the tour — one of the big things was we're a different generation of bands — a lot of us were nervous," Gaskarth admitted. "I can say I was nervous when you guys first joined on," he added. "I'm a fan. It's always like kicking down that wall of 'do I approach?' "

With the Roadshow over, both bands are keeping busy. Third Eye Blind plan to record a new album, while All Time Low will be on the road through 2010.

Will Chris Brown's BET Performance Revive His Career? PR Experts Weigh In

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:14 AM PDT

'The question is: Do people think it's real?' one expert asks of Brown's tearful BET Awards Michael Jackson tribute.
By Gil Kaufman

Only Chris Brown knows what caused him to choke up on Sunday night at the BET Awards during his tribute to Michael Jackson. Was it paying tribute to his late musical and dancing idol? Was it the emotion of performing on a major TV event for the first time in over a year in front of his peers? Was it the song's lyrics, which are about staring in the mirror and willing yourself to make a change?

Brown, whose career has stalled in the wake of his plea a year ago to felony assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna, grabbed a lion's share of the headlines in the wake of the emotional performance, earning higher placement in most reports than the return to the show of T.I. after spending nearly a year in prison on weapons charges and another major awards-show resurrection: Kanye West's first live set at an awards show since he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at last year's MTV Video Music Awards.

"The question is: Do people think it's real?" said veteran publicist and crisis manager Howard Bragman about the latest scene of a celebrity welling up on national TV. "If [the audience] bought it as authentic, then it might give him some sympathy, or there will be people who will roll their eyes because they feel like it's a PR stunt because we live in a cynical world."

Many of the respondents in an MTV News story about reader reaction to the Brown performance expressed a desire to forgive the singer and allow him to move on from the Rihanna assault. Even one of the star's most virulent blog attackers, Perez Hilton, put the knives away for the first time in more than a year and said the performance "seemed genuine" because the low-key wasn't "crying pretty," but rather seemed to honestly break down and lose his composure.

While initially skeptical, Hilton said upon further viewing the breakdown seemed real. "It was ugly and raw and I think a lot of different things were going there, from his love and tribute to Michael, to having exerted a lot of energy and emotion earlier, to thinking about the Rihanna incident, to probably relief and joy over getting the opportunity to perform again on television at a big awards show," he said.

As to whether a publicist would ever counsel a client to cry on cue in order to gain sympathy, Bragman not-so-sheepishly admitted that he did once tell a thespian, "You're a really good actor, I wouldn't mind seeing a few tears." And Bragman said the person in question was a good actor and it did work, though Bragman would not divulge their identity.

With tepid album sales for his latest LP, Graffiti, little interest at radio and the cancellation of a recent U.K. tour due to visa issues tied to his felony plea, Brown has been struggling to put his career back on track following the Rihanna case.

Holly Baird, a publicist at Sitrick Brincko Group LLC, the crisis-management group that worked closely with Brown, his mother and the singer's label in the aftermath of the Rihanna incident (but which no longer represents him), said she was very proud of Brown's performance on Sunday night and thought that it felt very authentic.

"Sunday's BET Awards performance was an opportunity for Chris to pay tribute to one of the world's greatest musicians of all time," she wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. "Chris has always stated that Michael Jackson has been an inspiration for him since he was a child and has musically been compared to Jackson in the past. Nothing about his performance was manufactured. It was an awesome tribute by a man that has for the past year, publicly dealt with a tumultuous phase in his career that has forever changed his life. Chris' breakdown was not just emotional, but sincere. I even started crying ... Chris broke down crying out of emotional exhaustion and in no way was this an attempt to redeem himself, but rather it showed the world that Chris is human and he too has emotions."

Baird said the choice of "Man in the Mirror" was fitting, since the inspirational, life-affirming song speaks to the importance of the global community taking responsibility for its actions and looking "in the mirror" at how we treat each other and our environment. "I believe the song alone spoke to Chris and we were witness to that on Sunday during his performance," she said.

What did you think of Chris Brown's Michael Jackson tribute at the BET Awards? Did it make you feel differently about him? Sound off in the comments below!

Taylor Lautner Compares His 'Twilight' Directors

'Our directors are so different from one another,' he says of Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade and Bill Condon.

Catherine Hardwicke gave him his big break. Chris Weitz made him a star. David Slade inherited a Hollywood veteran. And Bill Condon will help cement his legacy.

Yes, it's been quite a journey for Taylor Lautner, from his beginnings in Hardwicke's "Twilight" to his emergence as the third point in the franchise's smoldering teen love triangle during Weitz's "New Moon." On Wednesday, Slade's "Eclipse" gives us a Lautner who has become Hollywood's go-to guy for young action roles. Then in the fall, he'll join up with Condon to bring "Breaking Dawn" to the big screen and the vampire series to a close.

Given the craziness and good fortune of the past few years, Lautner can't pick which of these directors is his favorite. He will go so far as to say "Eclipse" is his favorite flick of the three thus far, but he has nothing except kind words for all the folks who have sat in the director's chair on a "Twilight" movie.

"The funny thing is, our directors are so different from one another," Lautner told MTV News. "I didn't have the opportunity to work with Catherine that much, but she was amazing. She's very smart and so creative."

Back in November, Lautner called Weitz's directorial style "flawless," and months later, his opinion of the man has not changed. "Chris was phenomenal — his sensibility. He's so sensitive," the 18-year-old said. "It really matched 'New Moon' 's feel."

And while Lautner has fond feelings for that film, "Eclipse" is his favorite, if only because it has the most action. "David brought his darker, cooler, more dangerous feel to 'Eclipse,' which was awesome," Lautner said.

Finally, there are the two parts of "Breaking Dawn," which will begin filming in the fall. Lautner hasn't yet had a chance to sit down with Condon to talk about the series, but he can't wait for the opportunity.

"I met him briefly," Lautner said. "Very quickly. Not about 'Breaking Dawn.' He seems like a very nice guy. Obviously ridiculously talented, so I'm excited I get to work with him twice."
