Could Drake's Thank Me Later Sell A Million In Its First Week?

Experts are skeptical of Drake joining Lil Wayne, Eminem in exclusive hip-hop club.

It's a benchmark in hip-hop that only two MCs have ever realized: selling 1 million album units during an opening release week.

Eminem achieved the feat — with his second and third albums, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, respectively — and in 2008, Lil Wayne joined the exclusive club as he pushed seven-digits worth of his sixth set, Tha Carter III, an act that cemented his ascent to super-stardom.

Kanye West came close with his third collection, Graduation, but stalled just short of the platinum plateau. And 50 Cent is the only debuting rapper who ever came anywhere near the mark when he pushed more than 800,000 copies of Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Now, on the verge of releasing his major label debut, Thank Me Later, many are wondering whether Drake — last year's mixtape wunderkind — can deliver on all of the hype to become only the third rapper to break the one-million mark in first week sales.

"I always said that his setup was so impeccable, so crazy, that I just thought he would get really close to 1 million," Vibe magazine editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall told MTV News. "The one thing he needed was that big record and I don't think he was able to get his 'Lollipop' out the gate," he said referring to Wayne's breakout Carter III single. "But still, I think the setup is incredible and I expect him to sell 500,000 to 600,000 the first week."

While "Find Your Love" is a favorite among Drake's fans, the Kanye West-produced single has yet to crack the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The melodic track followed Drake's first official single from Thank Me Later, the brooding "Over," an unconventional ode to the paranoia fame can bring; not an especially traditional pair of singles for an upstart rapper.

Also, Thank Me Later, while highly anticipated, is just the latest offering from Drake, who has released a string of records post-So Far Gone, from "Fear" to Forever." Add to that the fact that his album leaked online well ahead of its June 15 release date.

"Obviously, it's 2010, it's not 2003 anymore and the industry has changed a lot and I think everyone has sort of had to trim their expectations because of that," Entertainment Weekly's Simon Vozick-Levinson said. "That's not something that reflects on Drake personally, it's just that it's hard to sell records. To look at some more recent examples of people who have sold more than 500,000 [in a week], Sade did that, Eminem, last year, did about 600,000. These are artists who were gone for a while that had big fan bases waiting for an album to come out. Drake is at a different place in his career."

The EW scribe also said he believed Drake would not cross the one-million mark, instead predicting sales of 300,000 to 400,000 copies of his debut.

XXL's Bonsu Thompson shared the same sentiments, predicting 400,000-plus sales; he noted Drake's achievements and emphasized the rapper's long-term potential, even as he drew the line below gold certification and well below platinum.

"I don't think Drake will do a million his first week," Thompson said. "First, you have to compare it to the rapper who did achieve that, that was Lil Wayne. You have to look at all the elements that contributed to him selling 1 million in the first week. I don't think [Drake] has that smash single. The girls like 'Find Your Love' and the guys dig 'Over,' but it's not like that smash crossover, where everyone is in a state of panic and we have to have this album right now."

Much like box office tallies, first-week sales in music make for splashy headlines, yet ultimately a blockbuster's health is measured not by the opening haul but by how strong the project fends off sharp dips and maintains a steady stream of revenue.

A true star's worth may lie in his ability to avoid the dreaded second-week dive. That's the theory the New York Times' Jon Caramanica subscribes to, noting Drake's own goal may not be realized via those first-week sales. Instead, he noted Drake's ambitious plans, outlining how the rapper's sales down the road may be a better indicator of the impact of his debut.

"I think the real question for Drake is what are his fifth-week numbers, what are his 10th-week numbers, what are his 20th-week numbers, if he still pops in July, in August, in September, then that's a win," Caramanica told MTV News. "Then it doesn't matter if he sells a million the first week. But if he's gonna last, that's the thing, that's a Kanye, that's a Wayne, that's a Jay. And I think ultimately, that's the guy he wants to be considered as. I don't think anyone should get bent out of shape. They should get bent out of shape if he only sells two [copies]."

Katy Perry Wants To Be A 'Teenage Wet Dream'

Singer says she wants Teenage Dream LP to 'exude euphoric feeling.'

We've learned an awful lot about Katy Perry over the past week or so: She doesn't take kindly to Lady Gaga mucking around with Christian iconography, she wields a mean whipped-cream bra and, according to soon-to-be-hubby Russell Brand, she's a virtual flatulence factory.

One of the things we haven't heard from the 25-year-old blue-wig-sporting pop diva, until now, is what inspired her to name her upcoming album Teenage Dream.

"I want to call it Teenage Dream because there's a song on the record [called that] and I wrote that song in Santa Barbara and it was a very pure moment for me, because that's where I'm from," she told MTV News. "And it was, like, where I started my creative juices. And also it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling because everybody remembers what their teenage dreams were — all the girls that were on your poster walls.

"And I want to continue to be one of those ... teenage wet dreams," she added, laughing.

With her red-hot MTV Movie Awards performance of "California Gurls" with Snoop Dogg, Perry likely provided plenty more of those moist moments. Although there wasn't any of the teased nudity, Perry dressed up like a DayGlo Wonder Woman, complete with electric-blue hair and LED-encrusted Daisy Dukes, which was surely enough to send some teenage fantasies into overdrive.

Perry, who is slated to host the upcoming Teen Choice Awards on August 9, also made news this week when she appeared to dis Lady Gaga's new "Alejandro" video, tweeting, "Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke." Perry, who was raised in a strict religious household, seemingly took issue with the controversial video's depiction of sacred Christian iconography, including scenes of Gaga deep-throating Rosary beads and strutting around in a rubber nun's habit with an upside-down cross over her crotch.

Taylor Lautner Found Shirtless 'Eclipse' Scenes Awkward

'It is a little awkward for me to watch myself,' actor says, despite 'Eclipse' being his favorite 'Twilight Saga' installment.

Fans have a lot of reasons to look forward to "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn". There's the tent scene, the leg hitch, the final battle scene and — of course — plenty of shots of Taylor Lautner's abs. At a Los Angeles screening of the film, MTV News' Josh Horowitz witnessed spontaneous cheering at Lautner's first appearance on the big screen, in which he lacked (you guessed it) a shirt.

Lautner has never been hesitant about saying that "Eclipse" is his favorite of the four novels in "The Twilight Saga," and with a fan response like that, it's not hard to see why. However, Lautner is quick to reassure that his objectification isn't the reason he loves "Eclipse" the most.

"It is a little awkward for me to watch myself, and actually, when we're filming those scenes," Lautner said. "But ['Eclipse'] is my favorite one because it's the most guy-friendly by far. It's dangerous, there's a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It's great. It's definitely my favorite though."

Apparently filming the majority of "Eclipse" without his shirt on was easier than doing the same during "New Moon," because "Eclipse" was filmed during the summer. However, despite the fact that Lautner has the rest of his wolf pack posse for shirtless solidarity, he admitted that it wasn't any easier this time around being the one whose body the ladies were crushing on in "Eclipse."

"It's a little different when I'm the only person on-set with his shirt off," he admitted.

Travis Porter Are 'Killing' Indie Scene With Proud To Be A Problem

Unsigned Atlanta trio say new mixtape is 'giving most signed artists problems,' in Mixtape Daily.

This Week's Main Pick

Street Kings: Travis Porter

Holding It Down For: ATL

Mixtape: Proud to Be a Problem.

Real Spit: Strap, Quez and Ali are bringing that youthful energy with a club banger and the Atlanta trio have fans on the Internet riding for them heavy.

"At the moment we are an independent problem," Quez explained of Travis Porter's new mixtape Proud to Be a Problem.

"We're proud of it!" he added, acknowledging that the group has earned strong buzz in the South without the backing of a major. "It's really a good vs. bad thing. It's a good problem because we letting other independent artists know it's possible to be known and out there, just grindin'. It's a bad problem because we're giving most signed artists problems."

As you can tell, these guys aren't exactly modest about their increasing popularity. Several months ago, Travis Porter hooked up with Roscoe Dash and put out a version of "All the Way Turnt Up." Eventually Dash, who came up with the song, released it officially through his own label, Interscope. The Interscope version didn't feature Travis Porter, but included Soulja Boy.

Still, TP kept their movement going, releasing the Problem mixtape a few weeks back — the downloads were crazy. And the group is in no rush to sign with a major label just yet.

"At the moment, we're like a high school player on the verge of going to college," Strap said of Travis Porter's unsigned status. "We have to pick the right one. We have to weigh out all the options and pick the best deal accordingly. When that time comes, we'll make that decision. But at the moment, we're killing the independent scene."

Quez and Ali have a familial bond and they've known Strap since they were 12.

"Well, me and Ali are stepbrothers," Quez began to explain. "So we been knowing each other. We met Strap in like the 6th grade and made a group called the Hard Hittaz and been makin' great music ever since."

Travis Porter also have a short film out to accompany their mixtape.

Joints To Check For: » "Feet Ball." "It was a random song with random thoughts," Ali explained. "We said something about our shoes so we just called it 'Feet Ball.' "

» "Secondary Girl." Strap tells the cold hard truth. "Being on the road, girls that we meet sometimes get the impression they our main girl. But we made the song saying, 'You're just a secondary shorty. We only really mess with you when we are in your city."

» "I Put On a Show." "Really, 'I Put On a Show' is a description of [our stage]," Ali explained. "It's describing us and the fans. It's our chemistry, how we be rockin' and the way the fans interact! When we come in, they're asking, 'Who is Travis Porter?' When we leave, they're screaming and yelling and taking pictures!"

Robert Pattinson 'Glad' Two-Part 'Breaking Dawn' Will Be Shot Back-To-Back

'I think that would just be easier,' Pattinson, who hasn't yet read the final 'Twilight Saga' installment, admitted.

With Summit Entertainment's long-expected announcement that "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will be split into two films, "Twilight" fans breathed a collective sigh of "obviously." But while the statement seemed to be released so it could coincide with Saturday's "Eclipse" junkets, one member of the cast has reason to be opposed to Summit's choice of timing: Robert Pattinson.

Turns out the man also known as Spunk Ransom was forced to admit that he hasn't had a chance to read the final installment of "The Twilight Saga" since it was released two years ago due to his busy schedule, which includes his upcoming role in "Bel Ami." Since filming is expected to begin this fall for "Breaking Dawn," sounds like Pattinson had better get reading.

Pattinson was able to confirm, however, that "Breaking Dawn" will be following the path of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in having both of its films shot back-to-back. This bit of news was also expected but remained unconfirmed from Summit Entertainment's press release last week.

"I'm glad they're shooting them together at least because I think that would just be easier, doing it all in one," Pattinson admitted.

Even though he hasn't yet read the novel, Pattinson still knows a thing or two about the more talked-about "Breaking Dawn" moments. MTV News' Josh Horowitz commented that some of the story's big surprises have already been announced — like the fact that Bella Swan is going to be having a baby — and asked Pattinson what he felt about what "Breaking Dawn" had in store.

"I think that's going to be very funny," he said about the birthing scene. "The only thing I know about it is the famous scene: the kind of cesarean scene ... I do not envy Bill Condon to have to think of some way to do that."

Kristen Stewart On Robert Pattinson's Other Ideas For Best Kiss Award Acceptance Speech

'He wanted to light a match while I was juggling and he was hula hooping,' Stewart says of Pattinson's alternate ideas for the MTV Movie Awards.

Without a doubt, one of the most talked-about moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards was Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's acceptance "speech" for winning the Golden Popcorn for Best Kiss. Fans loved the quick, awkward kiss Pattinson grabbed from Stewart onstage, but when MTV caught up with him backstage afterwards, he admitted that the stunt didn't work out the way they'd planned.

Apparently Pattinson had other ideas for ways the two "Twilight" stars could accept the award, so when MTV News caught up with Stewart at the press junket for "Eclipse," we couldn't resist asking her about them.

"He did have some pretty funny ones," she admitted. But when asked if she regretted not acting on any of Pattinson's ideas, she responded, "No, no, definitely not. I'm really glad that we didn't do his."

What was Pattinson's best suggestion, you might ask? It seems as if he took a page right out of the book of his upcoming film "Water for Elephants" for this one.

"He wanted to be hula hooping with a match in his mouth, and then he wanted to light a match while I was juggling and he was hula hooping, and he wanted to put it in my mouth and see if we could make our way over to each other ... it didn't really make a whole lot of sense to me," Stewart said with a laugh. "I was like, 'I can't juggle onstage in shoes. I can barely walk up the stairs.' "

Stewart didn't even make it to the stairs this year before she almost fell when she went up with Pattinson to accept the Best Kiss award. At least it was a bit more coordinated than last year's Movie Awards, when Stewart dropped her Golden Popcorn statue for Best Female Performance during her acceptance speech.

"What's really funny is I really, really don't try to do that stuff. I try to be [smooth]. This year especially, I was like, I'm just going to give them exactly what they want, I'm going to be totally cool, I'm going to thank everybody," she said. "I got up there, and I was like, 'Chris directed the movie, and he's awesome. Thanks.' And I had to get off, like that."

Aubrey O'Day, Nick Cannon, Donald Trump Look Back On 'When I Was 17'

'I was very scared of boys,' former Danity Kane singer recalls of her high school days.

At 17, Nick Cannon and Donald Trump dreamed big, not surprisingly, and Aubrey O'Day was disgusted by sex, surprisingly. When you're a teenager, sometimes you see the world a little differently. On this week's episode of "When I Was 17," these three stars all reveal what that period was like for them.

O'Day admits that she was still a virgin at 17 and actually wasn't very comfortable with the idea of sex. "I was very scared of boys. I was very insecure about my body and I thought anything sexual was disgusting," she said. "I'd get, like, creeped out if I even heard my friends talking about it, and all my friends were having sex. And I was just the one that didn't ever have a boyfriend. People probably thought I was a lesbian."

Meanwhile, Cannon wanted to help out at home by getting an after-school job, but he was really more focused on being funny, which is probably a good thing since his humor is what eventually found him fame and fortune. "My mother made me get a job at, like, Wienerschnitzel," he recalls in the episode. "[It was a job] just to kind of help ends meet. ... I ended up getting fired because I was playing on the intercom system at the drive-thru, telling jokes."

Cannon dreamed of being a comic, but Donald Trump just wanted to play baseball in the big leagues. "I was captain of the baseball team," Trump explained. "I was supposed to be a professional baseball player. Fortunately, I decided to go into real estate instead. I played first base and I also played catcher. I was a good hitter. I just had a good time."

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Donald Trump, Nick Cannon and Aubrey O'Day — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
