Miley Cyrus Fans Loved Seeing Her 'Edgier' At Live-Stream Show

Miley Cyrus took over the Internet on Monday night, when MTV live-streamed her live performance of six songs from her new album, Can't Be Tamed. And though the 17-year-old has been showing off her edgier look and sound, the crowd at Los Angeles' House of Blues remain stalwart in their fandom.

Kelly Rindonde, a fan who traveled all the way from Philadelphia for the show, is enjoying the new Cyrus. "She's all grown up," she told MTV News after the show. "She definitely gave us a new side of Miley that was really exciting."

"I like all her new music; it's really a bit edgier," Steven Mango agreed. "It's really showing her personality break from Disney and everything."

Many fans think that her evolution from Disney princess to pop star is indicative that Miley is isn't going anywhere soon — and her performance even drew comparisons to other established legends.

"Her dancing [is] something Michael Jackson would probably be impressed by," Alex Satlan observed.

Tetris Kelly said Cyrus' performance was reminiscent of another contemporary artist, particularly during a cover that wasn't aired in the live stream. "By far my favorite moment of the show tonight was when she did 'I Love Rock 'n Roll,' because, to me, it was a tip off to Britney ... and that's why I like Miley. She's like the new age Britney."

While Miley may be following in Britney's footsteps by sharing onstage kisses with her fellow female and male dancers, other fans were pleasantly surprised that the singer was not completely uninhibited.

"We expected something that was going to be raunchy," Pam Giannino said. "Everybody's been putting the hype up, 'Don't go to this because she's going to be provocative.' It wasn't. It was pretty awesome. She did a really good job."

Eminem Plays Surprise Set At Red Bull EmSee Contest In New York

NEW YORK — Looks like the Jimmy B-Rabbit inside of Eminem is still alive.

The Detroit rapper seemed to channel the scrappy character he played in his breakout movie role early Tuesday morning (June 22) as he took to the stage for a surprise performance during the Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile freestyle rap battle. Just hours earlier, he had been on the rooftop of the Ed Sullivan Theater for a taping of Jay-Z's appearance on the "Late Show With David Letterman."

Decked out in jeans, a white T-shirt, black, zip-up hoodie and black military cap, Em hit the stage shortly after midnight with a burst of furious rhymes. The Shady One delivered a rapid succession of rhymes to Drake's "Over" before the DJ, the Alchemist, flipped the record to Lloyd Banks' "Beamer, Benz or Bentley."

The intimate audience at Manhattan's Bowery Ballroom — a space with a capacity of under 600 — were cheering wildly for Em and D-12's Mr. Porter.

Eminem quickly segued into "On Fire" and "Won't Back Down," from his new album, Recovery, which dropped on Monday. On the latter (without collaborator Pink), he was particularly energetic, delivering the rousing lyrics with added urgency.

"Listen, garden tool/ Don't make me introduce you to my power tool/ You know the f---ing drill," Em rapped. "How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you're disposable, Summer's Eve, Massengill."

After the third song, Eminem ended his brief set and directly addressed the crowd, hinting that their support was what carried him through recovery from his well-documented drug dependency.

"New York, on some real sh--, we didn't get time to rehearse this, but we wanted to come out for y'all," he said. "If it wasn't for y'all, I wouldn't even be here. Thank you to each and every one of y'all. We love you. Peace."

Chants of "encore" soon filled the venue, but the rapper was gone. "Thanks to everyone for coming out to the Redbull EmSee battle," he tweeted later. "I appreciate all the love New York. Yes, I'm really typing this."

Prior to Eminem's set, underground supergroup Slaughterhouse performed. Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I all drew cheers with their various slick rhymes.

Royce, a fellow Detroit MC and longtime Em affiliate, spoke to the crowd about the collective's ongoing negotiations with Shady Records, where the four hope to sign after releasing last summer's group debut via E1 Entertainment.

"It's Shady for life," he told the crowd. The event was hosted by Shade 45 morning-show host Angela Yee and D.R.E.S. Tha Beatnik. The night featured a three-round battle, judged by producers Just Blaze and the Alchemist, along with legendary freestyle rapper Craig G.

Rapper DNA scored the biggest reaction from the crowd with his boastful rhymes and eventually earned the win. The winners of Red Bull EmSee contests across the country will battle at the finals in Detroit, where Em himself made his name as a lyrical mudslinger.

Have you been at one of Em's recent appearances? Where would you like to see Eminem pop up next? Let us know in the comments.

Last fall, at the glittering red-carpet premiere of "New Moon" in Los Angeles, Kristen Stewart gushed about her brother/sister relationship with Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson revealed the worst part about being Robert Pattinson, and Dakota Fanning admitted she'd probably feed on another human being if he or she smelled like orange chicken from Panda Express.

Well, no one knows what will be on their minds as they make their way down the carpet, but we promise you'll know the moment it happens. Why? Because we'll be live-streaming the entire thing right here on MTV.com.

On Thursday at 9:30 p.m. ET, our own Josh Horowitz will be reporting live for two full hours outside the Nokia Theatre, where he'll be joined by Kimmy West, who runs the fan site His Golden Eyes. It's going to be a crazy night of "Twilight"-y goodness, and you'll be able to check out the whole thing in real time. And make no mistake: The event is going to be even bigger than last year's. As Greene told us as she introduced "New Moon" to the world, "People always ask if I'm used to it, but there's no way to get used to it, because they just keep getting more and more exciting. [The fans] are very passionate, and it keeps getting bigger. It's incredible."

The trailer for "The Green Hornet" arrived online Monday night, giving audiences their first peek at "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" director Michel Gondry's live-action film based on the classic pulp hero.

Written by and starring funnyman Seth Rogen, the film has had a long and rocky road to the big screen, having changed studios, cast and filmmakers multiple times since the mid-'90s. The current iteration casts Rogen as Britt Reid, the playboy son of a media tycoon who becomes masked crime fighter the Green Hornet after he inherits his father's empire. He's assisted by Kato (played by Jay Chou), a martial-arts expert and gadget genius who had been a close friend of his father.

The pair set their sights on the head of the Los Angeles crime syndicate, Benjamin Chudnofsky (played by Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz), and must keep their identities a secret from both the criminal element and amateur detective Lenore "Casey" Case (Cameron Diaz), who's getting a little too close to the duo — and the accesskey="

"The film's cast also includes "Battlestar Galactica" actor Edward James Olmos and British actor Tom Wilkinson, as well as music (and a possible performance) by heavy-metal rockers Anvil.

In the just-released trailer, we get our first look at Chou and Rogen in action, and a hint of what Gondry referred to as the "Kato vision" used by Chou's character during fight scenes. We also get a good look at the Black Beauty, Green Hornet's souped-up car, which debuted during last year's Comic-Con International in San Diego.

"The Green Hornet" hits theaters January 14, 2011, in standard, 3-D and IMAX screenings.

'American Idol' Singers Say Lee DeWyze, Tim Urban Will Have Most Groupies On Tour

'Idol' tourmates also told MTV News who's the messiest of the bunch.

By the time the "American Idol" finale rolled around on May 25, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox had spent over four months living in Los Angeles and performing at the Nokia Theatre. In that time, the finalists and the rest of the aspiring singers got to know each other in a sort of reality show commune: living in the same hotel, rehearsing together, hanging out.

They became a big family in many ways, and now they're about to embark on a giant road trip as the "American Idol" tour kicks off on July 1 outside Detroit. And as this season's contestants get set to travel the country — playing over 50 dates from coast to coast — they already know what to expect when it comes to the important aspects of a live tour: who's going to be the messiest and who will have the most groupies.

Not that they all agree. Casey James is convinced Aaron Kelly will have the most fans screaming his name. "He's a chick magnet," James told MTV News.

Yet Kelly has a feeling Tim Urban will be the most groupie-centric "Idol"er. And who does Urban believe will be surrounded by the most screaming tweens? Put that question to the floppy-haired crooner-next-door and all he'll offer is a sheepish, "Uhhhhh ..."

But who is the ultimate groupie-getter? The singers' opinions are largely split between Urban and champ DeWyze. Ask DeWyze, though, and he'll simply declare, "We're all pretty different."

That may be true when it comes to their talents onstage, but many of them share one thing in common: They're incredibly messy. Whose hotel room will be the most cluttered? Who will turn the tour bus into a garbage-strewn battleground?

According to the singers, Bowersox is sloppy, Didi Benami is slovenly, Siobhan Magnus is untidy and Andrew Garcia is grubby. But, once again, DeWyze takes the crown, tagged as the messiest by no fewer than five of his cohorts.

For his part, however, DeWyze is convinced another former "Idol" hopeful is the most unkempt. "Andrew Garcia!" he declared. "I'm gonna say that right now!"

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Michael Jackson Fans Face Tight Restrictions At Forest Lawn Cemetery

With Friday's one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death fast approaching, fans from around the world are, no doubt, working on their plans for honoring the late King of Pop. One logical place for those supporters to gather is Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, where Jackson is interred in the Great Mausoleum.

But despite reports last month that fans were expected to have limited access to Forest Lawn on Friday, according to TMZ, officials are putting a number of conditions on anyone planning to attend the event. A rep for Forest Lawn told the site that attendees will be allowed to enter the park on Friday, but, as expected, they will not be allowed anywhere near the mausoleum, the final resting place for a number of Hollywood legends, including Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow.

As for the special requests made by fans hoping to honor Jackson's memory — including the releasing of balloons or doves, or holding performances of Jackson's songs and dance routines — the rep said they too were mostly denied. A spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department said that fans will not be allowed to camp out or park around Forest Lawn 24 hours in advance of the anniversary, and no street vendors can set up booths hawking MJ merchandise near the cemetery.

The past year has contained plenty of other tributes to Jackson, from superstar DJ mixtapes to a recently announced plan for a $300 million museum and performance complex in the singer's hometown of Gary, Indiana.

Jackson died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his rented Hollywood mansion. The Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled that the 50-year-old singer died of "acute propofol intoxication" in combination with the use of sedatives. Authorities have claimed that his personal physician, cardiologist Conrad Murray, administered a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic to chronic insomniac Jackson in an attempt to help him get to sleep. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February in connection with Jackson's death and has pleaded not guilty in the case. The doctor is out on $75,000 bail and faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Celebrate Michael Jackson's legacy all week long as MTV News looks back at his life, his music and the death that shook the world one year ago.

Daniel Radcliffe Thought Justin Bieber Was A Woman

'I'm so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don't even try anymore,' 'Harry Potter' star admits.

Radiohead, Hope of the States — these are the kinds of bands Daniel Radcliffe listened to for years to get into character for his scenes in the various "Harry Potter" films. Sometimes at 6 in the morning, he'd pop into the makeup chair and start blasting old-school ska and punk tunes for all to hear.

That's the sort of stuff that gets Radcliffe pumped up to do his job, so it should come as no surprise that he's rather less familiar with the musical stylings of Justin Bieber. But it is a surprise — and a pretty funny one, at that — to hear who the "Potter" star thought was actually behind hits like "Baby" and "One Time."

"I only heard Justin Bieber for the first time two weeks ago," Radcliffe told MTV News. "I genuinely thought it was a woman singing. I'd never heard it before. Is it big in England yet?"

Well, Bieber's My World dropped in the U.K. in January and went gold by April, and while the pop star's upcoming tour will keep him within the confines of North America through 2010, there's always the possibility that he'll cross the pond again next year. Just don't count on Radcliffe to be in attendance when that happens.

"I'm so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don't even try anymore," he admitted.

That's not to say he's completely disconnected from everything mainstream. Radcliffe has much respect for the artist who's produced tunes like "Alejandro" and "Telephone."

"I know who Lady Gaga is," he said. "I think she's kind of amazing. She's really got a voice. My god. Not my kind of music, particularly, but she can really sing."

Jay-Z, Eminem Perform On Roof Of 'Late Show With David Letterman' Building

If there's one thing that is true in the music world, it's that you should never bet against Jay-Z. Last week, the veteran rapper had plans to perform a surprise live set on the marquee of New York's Ed Sullivan Theater, the home of the "Late Show With David Letterman." But when word leaked of the surprise show, the whole plan was iced over concerns about crowd safety and logistics.

On Monday, Jay performed anyway. Flanked by Eminem (who played a surprise show of his own later at Bowery Ballroom), Jigga took to the roof of the building housing the Ed Sullivan Theater and ripped off a performance for about 100 hard-core fans who earned the right to see the pair live by winning contests on Facebook and Twitter, according to the New York Post.

The pair did not need a permit for the show because the roof of the building is technically private property. Though some of the show was audible to the surrounding neighborhood, the performance was invisible to anybody walking by.

The duo's performance will air on this Friday's episode of the "Late Show With David Letterman" and will promote the pair of upcoming shows the rappers will co-headline at the end of the summer. There will be one show in each of Jay-Z's and Eminem's hometowns, New York and Detroit. The pair will play Comerica Park in Detroit (home of the Detroit Tigers) on September 2 and then appear at Yankee Stadium on September 13.

Rapper Fat Joe (born Joseph Cartagena) was questioned by police in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted in the rapper's limousine on Sunday night.

According to TMZ, police are still investigating the claims made by a local 33-year-old woman who called police around 12:46 a.m. on Monday to report the alleged incident. Joe was in town on Sunday night to perform a gig at the Orpheum Theater. The woman claimed that after the concert, she was invited to ride in the rapper's Cadillac limousine with his entourage on the way to their local hotel.

She claimed that at some point during the ride she was sexually assaulted in a manner that, according to Allhiphop.com, a police officer described as "inappropriate touching." Joe was detained for questioning along with other unidentified members of his crew but was not arrested, and he was released early Monday morning. No arrests have been made so far in the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Joe recently held a listening party in New York for his new album, The Darkside Vol. 1, which is due July 27. The album, which he said will remind fans of his greatness, features guest spots from the Clipse, Cam'ron, Young Jeezy, Trey Songz, Rico Love, R. Kelly, Too Short and Lil Wayne.

Joe enlisted a thick roster of producers for the album, including Scoop DeVille, Cool and Dre, Infamous, Raw Uncut, Street Runner, Scram Jones, and Just Blaze, who helmed the "I Am Crack" track, which finds Joey Crack rapping from the perspective of rock cocaine.

A spokesperson for Joe could not be reached for comment on the allegations at press time.

'Jonah Hex' star would love to star in adaptation of 'Gen 13' comic book series.

Though Megan Fox's turn as a gun-toting prostitute in the adaptation of comic book "Jonah Hex" failed to make an impression at the box office, the actress said she would like to bring another go at the comic book genre.

"I don't want people to protest this, but I would like to be [Sarah] Rainmaker in 'Gen 13' if they ever made that into a movie," she told Fox News.

"Gen 13" is about a group of teens who escape from a government training facility after they realize they're being kept there to test their superhuman powers. Rainmaker is an Apache superhero who has the power to manipulate the weather using her thoughts. She also is skilled in all things combat. Despite that aptitude, she is a pacifist, unless she has to fight off evil villains.

"I grew up reading 'Gen 13,' " Fox told MTV News last year, but more recently, she clarified that she's not an expert in the genre. "I have some knowledge, but I'm not a hard-core nerd. Unfortunately, I would like to be, but I just don't have the knowledge."

But speaking to Fox News, she was confident in her ability to play Rainmaker.

"She's a Native American, and I have a little bit of that blood in me," Fox said of the role. "It would be a bit of a stretch — but if Jake Gyllenhaal can be the Prince of Persia, I think that I can do that."

As for the combat part, she luckily had to learn those skills for "Jonah Hex." "The best part was the guns, because I've never done that before so that was a completely new challenge, and there was really not a worst part," Fox explained. "If I had to pick I guess I would say the corset, but I personally enjoyed that, and it's just hard to kick ass when you're laced up in something like that."

Michael Jackson Tributes: From Performances To A Planned Museum

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 03:52 AM PDT

Everyone from Beyoncé and Ne-Yo to Madonna and Usher honored the icon after his death a year ago.
By Gil Kaufman

The past year has been full of tributes to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. From stars proudly wearing their MJ gear on the red carpet and onstage to celebrity DJs tossing in that extra taste of "Billie Jean" to get a late-night crowd hyped, the iconic singer's face and music seemed to be everywhere.

But, as Friday's one-year anniversary of Jackson's death approaches, we decided to take a look at the many public tributes to the musical icon, who died June 25, 2009, at age 50 on the cusp of what was expected to be a triumphant series of comeback shows at London's O2 arena.

In the days following Jackson's death, spontaneous expressions of grief and celebration sprung up across the globe, from fans gathering on the streets of Tokyo and New York to pilgrimages to Jackson's childhood home in Gary, Indiana, and his abandoned adult playground, California's Neverland Valley Ranch.

The first and one of the most poignant was the July 7 public memorial for Jackson held at Los Angeles' Staples Center. With stirring performances and tributes from Stevie Wonder, Brooke Shields, Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, Lionel Richie, Usher, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson, the event reached an emotional apex when the singer's then-11-year-old daughter, Paris, said a final, tearful farewell to her "daddy."

And from President Obama and former wife Lisa Marie Presley to Slash, sister Janet and Kanye West, it seemed no one was immune from feeling the loss of Jackson's immeasurable pop-culture influence. The day after the singer's death, Obama said he was glad to see that MJ was being "remembered primarily for the great joy that he brought to a lot of people through his extraordinary gifts as an entertainer." Also weighing in with fond remembrances were Usher and Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown, Mariah Carey and Juelz Santana, Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg, collaborators Diana Ross and Paul McCartney, 50 Cent and tons of fans.

Some banded together to record songs commemorating Jackson, such as the Game and Chris Brown, LL Cool J, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Cookin' Soul's Tribute to the King mixtape with 50 Cent and Biggie Smalls. We also remembered all the folks — from Jay-Z, Rihanna and Tupac to Moby and Jennifer Lopez — who had sampled and covered MJ's classic songs in the past.

Time magazine did its part with a special commemorative issue just four days after Jackson's death, marking the first time the weekly had published off-cycle since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The night before, Janet Jackson spoke publicly for the first time about her brother's death at the BET Awards, telling the crowd, "To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family. He will forever live in all of our hearts." Her appearance at the event, which was full of nods to Jackson's legacy by the likes of New Edition, was followed by a cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" by show host Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo.

In early July, Beyoncé and Ne-Yo nodded to Jackson again, dedicating their sets to the King of Pop at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, while B's husband, Jay-Z, opened his July 9 show in Chicago with a montage of Jackson's photos and a plea to remember the love as part of a series of big-ups to his idol, which also took place during shows by noted acolyte R. Kelly.

Fans continued to play tribute to Jackson's legacy by streaming into stores to buy his albums by the millions, smashing sales records in the process and minting hundreds of millions for his beleaguered estate in the process. They also lined up in record numbers for his "This Is It" documentary.

The singer's family and friends gathered on September 3 for a private funeral, which featured his children laying a golden crown on the singer's casket, while a planned all-star concert organized by brother Jermaine Jackson fell apart at the final hour.

Madonna said goodbye to her old friend at September's MTV Video Music Awards, which also featured a musical tribute from Janet. "Dancing With the Stars" paid tribute the next month, when the show's dancers boogied to MJ songs.

In December, MTV News named Jackson its Man of the Year in honor of his indelible imprint on popular music and culture and the global impact of his death. The National Film Registry added Jackson's iconic "Thriller" video to its list of important films.

At January's Grammy Awards, an all-star cast of singers, including Smokey Robinson, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood, performed a cover of Jackson's "Earth Song" in a 3-D tribute that brought tears to the eyes of such superstar attendees as Rihanna and Beyoncé. That weekend, stars also gathered for a remake of "We Are the World" for Haiti earthquake relief that paid homage to the song's co-writer and lead influence.

Earlier this month, the mayor of Gary, Indiana, announced that the city plans to erect a $300 million museum and performance complex in Jackson's name.

Celebrate Michael Jackson's legacy all week long as MTV News looks back at his life, his music and the death that shook the world one year ago.

Director M. Night Shyamalan is preparing to release his first big-budget, effects-driven blockbuster, "The Last Airbender," based on the Nickelodeon cartoon "Avatar: The Last Airbender," on July 1. And his next original film is a project for which the stars now seem to be aligning.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reveals that those stars include Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bruce Willis, who are all "loosely attached" to headline the film. No plot details have been revealed, as is usual with Shyamalan, but the filmmaker has assistants ferrying his script between studio execs, who are observed by those same assistants and are expected to surrender the script immediately after finishing.

"Lady in the Water" aside, Shyamalan's films continue to make money, though his most recent efforts have fared poorly with critics. And nothing has performed as well as the director's debut effort, "The Sixth Sense," which starred Willis and earned almost $700 million in worldwide ticket sales. The actor also worked with Shyamalan on his "Sixth Sense" follow-up, "Unbreakable." If Willis is cast in this mysterious "Airbender" follow-up, it would be the pair's first time working together since 2000.

Cooper, who is just coming off of smiling for the cameras in support of this summer's "The A-Team" and presenting duties at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, has a big 2011 coming up. He'll star in the Todd Phillips-directed ensemble comedy "The Hangover 2," reprising his role from last summer. He'll also lead a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Anna Friel and Abbie Cornish in an adaptation of Alan Glynn's novel "The Dark Fields."

Paltrow is also coming off of a big press push for her own work in 2010 summer blockbuster "Iron Man 2." She'll appear later this year with Leighton Meester, Tim McGraw and "Tron Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund in the country music drama "Love Don't Let Me Down." She's also one of the sizable ensemble cast that's assembled for Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion," which also stars Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard and Laurence Fishburne.

Taylor Lautner Says 'Abduction' Has An 'Amazing' Story

'I love action, but most important is the story,' he tells MTV News of upcoming thriller.

Lily Collins is pretty sure Taylor Lautner, her co-star in "Abduction," will doff his shirt at some point in the film — "which everyone would totally hate, right?" she joked recently with MTV News.

When it comes to the onscreen removal of shirts and the baring of abdominal muscles, of course, Lautner is well-practiced. His "Eclipse" character seems almost allergic to covering his torso, so often does the teen werewolf appear shirtless. For other facets of "Abduction," though, Lautner has needed some practice. That's why he's been hard at work for months in preparation for the summer shoot.

"I've been training," he told MTV News. "I did boxing training for a couple months. Now I'm into the fight training, motorcycle, I think when I get to Pittsburgh, do a little swimming training. It's all around. It's going to be a lot of fun."

In the Jason Bourne-style thriller, Lautner stars as a teen who stumbles upon his baby picture on a missing-persons website. As he reaches out to his birth parents, Lautner finds himself caught up in a world of underground spies and death-defying stunts. Joining him and Collins are Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs and Maria Bello.

"Abduction" is just one film in a growing lineup of action-centric roles for Lautner. The 18-year-old has the stunt-heavy "Eclipse" arriving in June, and he has plans for a superhero turn in "Stretch Armstrong" and a stylized thriller in "Cancun."

"I love action, but most important is the story," Lautner said. "And the story behind this action thriller ['Abduction'] is amazing. We got [director] John Singleton behind us. ... I'm so thankful we're getting a cast like that."

Miley Cyrus' MTV Live-Stream Show: The Good Girl Grows Up

During six-song set in L.A., singer speaks her mind and performs 'Who Owns My Heart' for the first time.

Her new album is available now. She has a brash new attitude to go along with it. And both of those things were on display Monday night (June 21), as Miley Cyrus took to the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a live-streaming concert called, appropriately enough, "Miley Cyrus: Live in L.A."

Her six-song set — streamed on MTV.com — showcased songs from her just-released Can't Be Tamed and gave the 17-year-old Cyrus a chance to get a bit rebellious, speaking her mind on a host of topics (including abusive relationships and gay rights), prowling the stage with purpose and even working a profanity or two into the mix.

She kicked things off with the title track from Tamed, a strutting, steamy thing that saw her spitting lyrics, tossing her hair, popping her hips and even re-enacting the faux kiss she shared with a female dancer earlier this month on "Britain's Got Talent" (though, perhaps in the spirit of equal opportunity, she also shared a fake smooch with a male dancer). But it wasn't all sass. At song's end, Cyrus showed off her pipes a bit too, extending a "knoooooow" to glorious lengths.

That was followed by another Tamed track, "Who Owns My Heart" (which Cyrus introduced by telling the rapt audience that it was the first time she'd ever performed the track live), which galloped along on a shuffling beat and was given added punch thanks to the addition of a live band. There was some heavy panting from Cyrus and a big-time chorus — "Who owns my heart/ Is it love, or is it art?" — that had the crowd shouting along. Loudly.

She changed things up a bit with "Liberty Walk," a song she co-wrote and dedicated to "women who are stuck in abusive relationships ... to empower them." The song — which features a stomping beat and even a bit of rapping from MC — also gave her the chance to slip a couple of "sh--s" by the censors too ... much to the delight of the audience.

Up next was her cover of Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," which featured some genuinely windswept guitar work, but not Poison main man Bret Michaels (the two performed the tune together last week on "Good Morning America") though she did dedicate the song to him and urged the audience to "pray" for his continued health (she also said the song was her mom's favorite).

"Rose" was followed by the anthemic "Robot," which saw the reappearance of her backup dancers, and then the MTV.com live stream ended with "Heart Beats for Love," a power-packed ballad that Cyrus introduced by saying that she wrote it "mostly for my gay fans," adding that she abhorred the fact that, "We have people on this earth who hate someone for loving another."

She then launched herself into the song, eyes closed, making a pair of peace signs with her hands, and by the time the tune had reached its crescendo, everyone in the audience was doing the same, showing (much like everything else on this night) not just the power and confidence of Cyrus' new songs, but the sway she holds over her fans too. Sway she's apparently decided to use for good. And, really, that speaks a lot louder than some fake girl-on-girl action any day of the week.

The Roots Are At 'Crossroads' On <i>How I Got Over,</i> Says ?uestlove

'You really don't hear any hip-hoppers dare use the word 'midlife crisis,' the drummer tells MTV News.

The Roots' long hip-hop career is rivaled by only a few acts. With the release of their 11th studio album, How I Got Over, however, the Philly collective shows it can still push boundaries, exploring some fairly un-hip-hop themes.

"The whole premise of How I Got Over is basically ... a coming-of-age record," ?uestlove told MTV News last week of their latest effort, which came out Tuesday (June 22).

The Roots drummer added that the band wanted to switch things up and touch on some thought-provoking themes, a practice he said is more typical of rock than hip-hop. "There hasn't been a real precedent of anyone being at the crossroads [in hip-hop]. I hear [it] a lot in rock records ... where it's sort of like, 'I'm at a point in my life where I don't know what to do and things are happening around me.' "

The Grammy-winning group known for keeping a tireless touring schedule has more recently eased up on the concert dates, putting down roots as the house band for NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." The band has no doubt arrived at an enviable level of success for an act that dropped its first effort back in '93. Still, ?uest explained that the group wanted to get candid on How I Got Over about the issues confronting them at this stage in the game.

"You really don't hear any hip-hoppers talking about some sort of ... existential existence of God or even dare use the word 'midlife crisis' in any of their verses. So we wanted to make a completely honest record."

But How I Got Over isn't all existential musings, ?uestlove insisted. The drummer points to tracks like the upbeat "The Fire," which features soul singer John Legend, who also happens to be working on a collaborative album with the legendary Roots crew.

"As far as 'The Fire' is concerned, we wanted to balance the record out also, with a sign of hope, a ray of hope," ?uest said. " 'The Fire' is ... almost an anthem, if you will. It's like a hang-on-in-there, if you will, for us."

Are you glad to hear the Roots will touch on some more complex subjects on their next album? Tell us in the comments!

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Headliners: Dead Prez and DJ Drama

Mixtape: Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz

Essential Info: The red, black and green forever! M-1 and Stic.Man of Dead Prez are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their classic debut, Let's Get Free, with a new mixtape in conjunction with DJ Drama. The street CD — which came out Tuesday (June 22) — also gives a nod to another classic of theirs, 2004's Revolutionary but Gangsta.

"The Dead Prez tape is called Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz," Drama said Saturday in Atlanta, backstage at Birthday Bash 15. "I jumped on it. I remember when Dead Prez first came out. I did an interview with them, [during the] old 'Soul in the Hole,' Loud Records day. It's a way for me to get in and do projects that people might not expect, but it's still quality music. I take my brand where I want to. Dead Prez is definitely deserving of a Gangsta Grillz. It's a good balance.

"The guys go in on a lot of records," Drama added. "The hits as well as some obscure joints. They had to go in on 'Over.' Drake borrowed the style; they took it right back. They did their thing. They went in on Gucci's 'Wasted.' You'll be surprised about that. They went in on a couple of instrumentals. It's some heat on there, man."

Of course, the Drake track Dram refers to is the song "Far From Ova," which is already on the Net. Last month, for Mother's Day, Prez also released "The Beauty Within," which uses the beat and reworks the hook from B.o.B's "Nothin' on You."

Daniel Radcliffe Recalls 'Harry Potter' Cast's Karaoke Outing

A Muse cover was his 'proudest moment, because I actually did that rather well,' he tells MTV News.

"Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe obviously has a love for film and theater, with eight "Potter" films under his belt, as well as stints in London's West End and Broadway productions of "Equus." What his fans might not know is that he also has a love for karaoke — a love that he recently celebrated with his "Potter" castmates.

"I love karaoke," he told MTV News at the opening of Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter last week. "I am one of those people [who says], 'No, no, I can't, I couldn't possibly, no I won't ... all right, give me the mic!' And then I'm elbowing other people out of the way to get to the stage."

So what is Radcliffe's go-to karaoke showstopper?

"[Elvis Presley's] 'Hound Dog.' That, and then I did 'Feeling Good' by Muse. That was my proudest moment, because I actually did that rather well. I was really pleased, because I can sing," he promised. "I've been having singing lessons for two and a half years. I'm not amazing, obviously, but I'm all right."

Radcliffe was quick to point out that longtime co-star Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) also has an affinity for karaoke and performed at least three songs at their recent outing. Radcliffe said Grint and his chaperone Sarah performed a "sweet" version of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" and then joined Ollie Phelps (a.k.a. Ron's older brother George Weasley) for a rousing take on the Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" and finished his set with his double Antony for an "awesome" performance of "We Are Family."

'Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010': Voting Begins Today!

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 03:10 AM PDT

Who is the hottest breakthrough MC of this year? Your vote will decide — the winner will be revealed July 25!
By Shaheem Reid

Photo: MTV News

Last year, as part of our annual "Hottest MCs in the Game" rollout, we asked the audience — the passionate, informed fans of hip-hop — to vote for their pick. More than 100,000 people voted and comments came in by the thousands as well. The audience's winner was Eminem and the votes were factored into the final tally.

For our next big project, "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010," you, the audience, will determine the winner — we've selected the 20 candidates, but you will decide who it is!

Over the next few weeks, we want you to cast your vote for the "Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010." Please bear in mind that we are talking strictly up-and-coming talent: artists cannot have released a major-label album by June 21, 2010, or been voted into a previous "Hottest MCs in the Game" top 10, so MCs like Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Andre 3000, Eminem, Kanye West and even Drake — our #3 Hottest MC last year — and chart-topper B.o.B are not eligible. We'll have the 2010 "Hottest MCs" rollout later in the year.

You should cast your vote based in the following factors: The MC's musical skill (rhyme ability, flow and songwriting) as well as their buzz on the street and the impact they've had on the game so far. All of those factors should be taken into consideration when casting your vote — and if you think we've missed anyone, let us know in the comments!

The poll is open until midnight on July 16, and the five MCs with the most votes will be unveiled starting on July 19. All five will be featured on the "Sucker Free Summit" awards show July 25, and then the winner, chosen by you, will be announced.

As you'll see from our list below, plenty of up-and-coming MCs have made their names known in recent months, so take a look, consider carefully, and cast your vote!

"Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010" Candidates

Big Sean
One of Kanye West's newest recruits to G.O.O.D. Music, Sean reps Detroit and has released a slew of underground mixtapes.

Curren$y
This New Orleans MC is known as "Spitta" for a reason: He has rhymes galore. Formerly signed with Lil Wayne, Curren$y now runs with Damon Dash and the new Roc-A-Fella Records.

Donnis
With his "Gone" single bubbling, this ATL native has a much-hyped mixtape, Fashionably Late, coming later this summer — and look out for his side gig in T.I.'s Akoo fashion ads.

Freddie Gibbs
Fred wants to be the biggest artist from Gary, Indiana, since Michael Jackson and his family — Gibbs' "Ghetto" video was filmed in the city. Fred has been working out of L.A. and continuing to show his hometown love while recording his debut.

J. Cole
Cole is so cold on the mic that Jay-Z signed him to Roc Nation. His "Who Dat" single is making waves and his debut album is slated for an August release.

Jay Electronica
Jay is from New Orleans but his words are resonating all over the world. "Exhibit C" is one of the biggest street records of the year, and of course he and Erykah Badu observed their daughter Mars' first birthday earlier this year. Diddy has been trying to lure Jay to Bad Boy, but nothing official has been signed yet.

Jay Rock
His flow is vicious, his content is insightful: Rock is part of the new wave of MCs repping Cali.

Nicki Minaj
The first lady of Young Money is the current face of female hip-hop. She's a hit with the ladies because of fashion style and personality, and the guys love her because she's sexy and can hang with the big dawgs lyrically. Even with Lil' Kim calling her out, accusing her of copying her steez, Minaj has forged her own lane, stayed focused on continually killing guest appearances and building anticipation for her debut LP.

Nipsey Hussle
Hussle in the house! The young Cali MC reps the new generation of the west and has been co-signed by the likes of the Game and Snoop Dogg. His debut LP is expected later this year.

Pac Div
This Southern California group likes to gang up on the mic like a pack of wolves. Their Church League Champions mixtape made waves last year, and they're bound to make a big splash when their Grown Kid Syndrome LP drops later this year.

Pill
The Atlanta MC's medicinally themed mixtapes have earned him kudos from fans and peers such as Andre 3000. He dropped 1140: The Overdose, his first Gangsta Grillz mixtape, earlier this month, and his debut LP is in the pipeline.

Roscoe Dash
This ATL MC keeps a club anthem in his back pocket: First he struck with "All the Way Turnt Up" and came roaring back with his latest single, "Show Out."

Diggy Simmons
With Run-DMC's Rev Run as his dad, fly rhymes are in this upstart's bloodstream. His First Flight mixtape got him love on the Internet, kudos from MCs such as Nas and Kanye West, and a record deal with Atlantic Records. The young'n is a fashion savant as well — just check his Life of a Jet Setter blog.

Trae Tha Truth
Trae might not get much airplay in his hometown of Houston but his music rules the streets — no lie. He currently has the "Inkredible" single with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross and his upcoming album Tha Truth features Jadakiss, the Game, Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, Ross, Wayne, Plies, Scarface and Gorilla Zoe.

Travis Porter
This unsigned trio from ATL are tearing it up with their Proud to Be a Problem mixtape. "At the moment we are an independent problem," the group's Quez told Mixtape Daily, but their music and energetic stage shows promise that won't be the case for long.

Tyga
One of Lil Wayne's Young Money artists, Tyga has been keeping busy on the mixtape scene with solo tapes and his Fan of a Fan team-up with Chris Brown.

Vado
Cam'ron's latest find from Harlem recently dropped the Boss of All Bosses 2.5 mixtape with Cam and DJ Drama. He's known for his energy and lyrics, and Vado is the cornerstone of Cam's new clique of artists, the U.N.

Waka Flocka Flame
This Atlanta MC blew up with the street anthem "O Let's Do It," and currently has another monster with "Hard in the Pain."

Wiz Khalifa
The biggest thing to hit Pittsburgh since Big Ben Roethlisberger crushed the Internet with his recent Kush & Orange Juice mixtape, and he's got a swell of supporters called the Taylor Gang that love his laid-back music.

Yelawolf
This MC from smalltown Alabama (Gasden, actually) has a rapid-fire flow and an unlikely set of classic-rock influences on his latest mixtape, Trunk Music.

Cast your vote for the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" right here! The top five will be revealed beginning on July 19, and the winner will be announced on the "Sucker Free Summit" July 25!

All MCs have their own writing process. Drake's incorporates a device many people use for work, nonsense or both: a BlackBerry.

Drizzy opens up about his artistic process in the new MTV documentary, "Drake: Better Than Good Enough" which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The Young Money phenom, who rose to fame from the strength of his highly popular online mixtapes, doesn't mess with a pen and paper when it comes to jotting down his lyrics, and reaches for a smartphone instead.

In this clip from the upcoming doc, Drizzy bops to the track Kanye West produced for "Show Me a Good Time" and then picks up a BlackBerry and starts punching out some rhymes.

"All Drake's raps for eternity have been written inside of a Blackberry," producer and engineer Noah "40" Shebib says in the clip. "I mean, to the point where if he doesn't have a BlackBerry, we gotta go get somebody who's got one. I've had dummy BlackBerrys around that I just pull out for him to write on, like if he needs one ... that don't actually even work!"

In the clip, Drake cops to his need for a BlackBerry when working on his lyrics. "I can't write my raps on paper," Drake says. "The BlackBerry keys — my thumbs were made for touching them." The clip wraps up with Drizzy in the booth recording and referencing his lyrics on his trusty smartphone.

Don't miss the "Drake: Better Than Good Enough" documentary, airing Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

Justin Bieber, Pete Wentz, More Stars Pitch In For CNN Gulf-Relief Telethon

Nicole Richie and Alyssa Milano answer phones, while India.Arie and Herbie Hancock perform.

On CNN's "Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help" telethon Monday night (June 21), Kathy Griffin joked that if she and Ryan Seacrest — a frequent comedic target of hers — could sit in a room together, surely folks could contribute money to a Gulf-relief fund. But Griffin and other celebrity volunteers meant serious business during the two-hour drive.

Larry King hosted the relief effort, which benefits the victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill. Proceeds from the televised event will also go toward a number of charities, including Nature Conservancy and United Way. Pete Wentz, Nicole Richie, Alyssa Milano and other stars took phone calls, while Herbie Hancock, Dr. John and India.Arie all performed during the live show.

Other stars taped pleas for donations, including Justin Bieber, who appealed to his young fans to do their part. "The oil disaster in the Gulf has been a big problem, but every little bit can help," Bieber said. "There's no such thing as being too young to pitch in, and this is urgent. What we do now can affect our future. You can donate money or time or anything to the groups you've heard about on this show."

Taking a break from working the phone lines, Wentz told Seacrest: "A lot of people have been writing me and asking me why they should donate money. This is a crisis that is affecting everybody, and we need to address it immediately. We should come together and ... be hopeful now."

Richie said it was important to get people involved and give them a way to help out. "Every little bit counts," she said.

King, who also interviewed actors and Louisiana natives Ian Somerhalder ("Vampire Diaries") and Sam Trammell ("True Blood") during the show, pleaded with viewers to step up and check in. "We're all in this battle together," he said.

"We're losing about a football field of wetlands every day," Trammell said, clearly startling King. "The oil is now going into killing the grass."

Griffin said people were asking why they should contribute, given that the crisis stemmed from a corporation. Her reply: "I think this is beyond a financial solution. We all have to help each other. We may be the ones to get out of this," she said.

Share your well-wishes with the people of the Gulf or let us know how you've helped out, in the comments.
