Katy Perry Says 'California Gurls' Video Is 'All Edible'

There will probably be many good times to watch Katy Perry's "California Gurls" video, though Perry herself has one particularly interesting suggestion.

"It's definitely something to watch when you have the munchies. ... It's all edible," she told MTV News. "[Plus,] Snoop is in it."

She's right too. Judging by the sneak peek we saw a few weeks back, Snoop most definitely is in the "California Gurls" clip — along with marshmallows, candy canes and a whole lot of confectionaries too (most of which are used to cover up Perry and her backup dancers). All in all, it looks like it's going to be a pretty sweet affair, though, to be honest, there's not a whole lot about the video that reminds us of California. But, according to Perry, that was sort of the plan all along.

"We named it 'Candyfornia' instead of 'California,' so it's a different world," she said. "It's not just like, 'Oh, let's go to the beach and throw a party and then shoot a music video!' It's more like, 'Let's put us California Gurls in a whole different world!' "

In keeping with that spirit, even though the song big-ups the beautiful ladies from the West Coast, Perry isn't about to let her East Coast girls go unloved. In fact, the way she sees it, "California Gurls" can be a bicoastal anthem — you just have to wait for the weather to change in the East.

"The boys always dream about dating a California Gurl ... just because we've got the sun shining 365 days a year," Perry laughed. "And I love New York girls. I think they're hot, and I think they have a lot of attitude. But I'm telling you, when it comes wintertime, they're all gonna be singing 'California Gurls.' "

Celebrity Favorites: The Game

Game says the smart money is on Drake to do some phenomenal numbers next week when the SoundScan results for Thank Me Later are announced. Drizzy's debut finally came out Tuesday (June 15), and Game thinks Drake will live up to his hype and be rewarded with high sales.

"Thank Me Later got leaked," Game said recently in NYC. "You think he ain't gonna go out there and push over gold the first week? I got [him selling] over 650,000 first week. That's what I'm giving Drake: 650, man. Every now and then, a man comes along and reshapes hip-hop; this is the dude for this time. I came out, my first album, 590,000. I feel he got a bigger buzz than I did. When I came out, everybody else was still poppin'. Right now ... he's just coming down. I got my album coming, Tip coming, Ross coming, but everybody is on their Drake stuff — even me. Dude is good, man."

Game said he wasn't sold on the Canadian MC initially but became a believer.

"At first, I thought it was just catchy hooks," Game recalled. "But he got something to say. I like it. He's not from America, but you can tell his influences are us, and dude [is] dope. Plus, all the chicks like him."

Drake's Thank Me Later was bootlegged two weeks ago, but Game is from the school of thought that if the music is great, it will sell regardless.

"Lil Wayne showed me that," Game told us a few weeks ago. "His album leaked four weeks before Tha Carter III was supposed to come out, and he sold a million the first week. That's just an excuse. ... It's no longer acceptable, because people are still selling.

"Every album is getting leaked from now until the duration of hip-hop," he added. "It's just once it hits the plant, or once a radio station gets their promo, somebody is gonna leak the album. You can look forward to it being leaked a week early or whatever. It's gonna get leaked."

Robert Pattinson Talks Getting Naked For 'Bel Ami'

By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Fans of "Twilight" sensation Robert Pattinson are about to see a whole different side of the British actor in an upcoming movie — quite literally a different side, in fact.

Pattinson stars in "Bel Ami," a period drama based on French author Guy de Maupassant's 1885 novel of the same name. The actor is playing Georges Duroy, a morally ambiguous journalist who gradually rises from rags to riches among the Paris elite thanks to his various connections to powerful and wealthy mistresses — a lineup of women played by Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and other notable actresses.

In the past, Pattinson has described his character as "totally amoral" and very different than the types of roles his fans are used to seeing him inhabit. But despite this, it's hard to imagine the legions of Team Edward loyalists frowning at the news that Pattinson is showing off his bare backside for the period film.

"I think there's a lot of my crack in it," he laughed to MTV News while promoting "Eclipse," the latest "Twilight" installment. "I think there's quite a bit of nudity."

Pattinson said he still hasn't seen a final cut of the film, so whether his "crack" makes it into the finished version of "Bel Ami" remains to be seen. Regardless, the actor said working on the sex-filled period drama was quite a different experience, particularly as someone very used to the typically teen-friendly subject matter of the "Twilight" franchise.

"It was such a strange story," he said of "Bel Ami." "I think it will turn out to be very interesting, but I have no idea about any of it yet."

The Shins Cover Squeeze On Levi's Pioneer Recording Sessions

Portland band pays homage to British new-wave act as part of denim company's revival series.

The Shins may have taken a break while frontman James Mercer works on Broken Bells, his side project with Danger Mouse, but fans can get their fix of the indie Portland band's melodic rock, thanks to Levi's Pioneer Sessions, which brought them back together for its 2010 Revival Recordings Program.

"This will be the first Shins release in a while," Mercer said in a video interview for Levi's.

The denim company courted a dozen musical acts and asked them to re-create the songs that helped inspire their own careers. Nas kicked off the series with his cover of the Slick Rick classic "Hey Young World," and Levi's has already posted covers by She & Him, Bomba Estereo and Dirty Projectors.

The Shins re-crafted "Goodbye Girl," by British new-wave group Squeeze, who had a string of U.K. hits, including "Up the Junction," "Tempted" and "Hourglass." Hard-core Shins fans may know that Mercer spent his high school years living in England, where he was exposed to Squeeze's music. When Mercer moved back with his family to the States, he recalled being glad to see that Squeeze were enjoying some attention on this side of the pond.

"I remember 'Cool for Cats,' that was a song that was on MTV three times a day," Mercer told MTV News from his recording studio.

And while Mercer's earliest memories of the band coincide with his formative years in England, his ongoing fascination with Squeeze had more to do with their penchant for changing their sound, always growing sonically. " 'Tempted' was a major hit for them, and it's incredible progress [from 'Cool for Cats'] and it's only in the course of two years," Mercer said.

"This song just really grabbed me," Mercer went on to explain of why they chose the 1978 track "Goodbye Girl." "All the things that grab you about any good song: the melody and the chords and the way that they interact, and the rhythm of the song."

You can check out the song for yourself. The Shins' cover of Squeeze's "Goodbye Girl" is available for free download at the Levi's Pioneer Sessions website.

Eminem's <i>Recovery</i> Release Date Moved Up One Day

Album will now arrive in stores on June 21, Em confirms in a tweet.

Eminem's hotly anticipated album Recovery is set to land on shelves a day earlier than originally planned. The legendary lyricist's seventh studio album will now get a June 21 release, according to Em's label, Interscope, after the album leaked online.

Once the full LP hit the Net two weeks ahead of its June 22 street date, many expected the Detroit rapper to move up its official delivery. But initial reports seemed to indicate the June date would stick. On Wednesday, XXLmag.com reported that Interscope rep Dennis Dennehey had confirmed the album would roll out on the originally scheduled Tuesday. Yet just a day later, the label issued a press release announcing a new drop date.

Eminem has since confirmed the news, tweeting on Monday (June 14): "It's true. RECOVERY goes on-sale Monday, 6/21 now."

Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said the public's hunger for the hip-hop icon's latest effort had fueled the date change. "We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version," Berman said in the press release. "At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem."

Berman also noted that for devoted fans, adjusting the set's availability by 24 hours was significant. "Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans."

The Recovery leak came only a few days after Em premiered the dramatic video for his single "Not Afraid." For his latest set, Marshall Mathers reached beyond his Shady family, teaming with stars like Rihanna, Pink and Lil Wayne. The album also features production from new collaborators like Jim Jonsin, Just Blaze and DJ Khalil.

Are you satisfied that Em's album will drop a day earlier? Should the label release it sooner? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Drake's <i>Thank Me Later</i> Among Our Top Five Most-Anticipated Rap Debuts

50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill and DMX had a little more buzz coming into the game than Drizzy does.

Drake fever has reached a fever pitch, but the release of his highly anticipated debut album, Thank Me Later, on Tuesday should quench the thirst of even his most eager fans.

The buildup has been steady since his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone. But as Drake appeared on a steady diet of hits, ranging from his own ("Forever") to others' (Timbaland's "Say Something"), Young Money's White Knight drove up expectations like Khloé Kardashian's Master Card bill.

Now, backed by his Kanye West-produced single "Find Your Love," rumblings of blockbuster opening-week sales have begun. The collection is clearly one of the most-anticipated premieres in hip-hop history. But where does it rank alongside some of the greatest debut albums? Here, MTV News ranks the top five most-anticipated rap debuts.

1. 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin'

Momentum Builders: 50 Cent having the top-selling debut of all time was no fluke. The Queens native's ascension to the top of the charts couldn't have been scripted more perfectly (they tried to in the film "Get Rich or Die Tryin' "). Fif had one of the most dangerous and intriguing backstories in music history.

His first stop was street credibility. He was authentic and audacious. Real-life events such as his near-death and other dealings in the underbelly served as fodder for his music. Just as important, 50, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo made the hottest music on the block, and they gave it away for free. The G-Unit owned the streets in 2001 and 2003, murdering the circuit with nonstop underground classics such as 50 Cent Is the Future, The Future Is Now, Guess Who's Back, Automatic Gunfire, God's Plan and No Mercy, No Fear (peep the MTV intro that Whoo Kid pilfered from this very organization), which spawned his breakthrough song "Wanksta."

A few months before putting out his album, Fif — who says he was once blackballed by the music industry — got his biggest co-sign, inking a deal with goliaths Dr. Dre and Eminem. The alliance paid dividends almost immediately, as fans of the already-established duo jumped on the Unit bandwagon. The final knockout blow was the Dr. Dre-produced "In Da Club," which exploded, becoming one of rap's most successful club bangers.

Get Rich or Die Tryin' was bootlegged weeks before its release in February 2003. Any question anyone had about the quality was silenced, and DJs immediately gravitated toward "Many Men," "Patiently Waiting" and "What Up Gangsta" in advance of the LP hitting stores. Fif arguably made the album of the decade, and the word of mouth from the street solidified him.

First-Week Sales: More than 872,000 copies in less than one week

2. Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle

Momentum Builders: Snoop Dogg laid down the blueprint for modern MCs to break into the game in a major way: He landed a co-sign from one of the most important figures in hip-hop (Dr. Dre), rolled with the hottest crew at the time (Death Row Records) and pounced on every opportunity like an untrained pit bull.

Who could forget Snoop's syrupy flow mixed with spiked anger on his guest appearance alongside Dr. Dre on the "Deep Cover" soundtrack? The pup continued to prove his mettle on the good doctor's The Chronic album, delivering head-nod-inducing rhymes on seminal cuts like "Stranded on Death Row," "Bi---es Ain't Sh--" and "Dre Day." He was scathing in song, debilitating Uncle Luke on wax, but Snoop also proved to be cooler than a St. Ides fresh out the fridge.

Snoop was clearly the undisputed prince of Los Angeles, and before the East Coast/ West Coast feud, the long-limbed MC also managed to reach across the map, earning admirers from all over the country, including in New York.

It was amid this popularity that he broke out on his own with Doggystyle. Eminem might have blown up over a decade later with "My Name Is," but it was Snoop who first declared his identity on the rumbling "Who Am I (What's My Name)," a G-funk-drenched number that featured a Fab 5 Freddy-directed video, memorable for the rapper's transformation into a Doberman Pinscher.

"Gin and Juice" and "Doggy Dogg World" followed, each with visuals as slick as Snoop's rhymes on the tracks. The clips captured his easy charisma and timeless charm, characteristics that would carry Snoop the rest of his career, as he became a multimedia superstar with appearances in movies, television shows, video games and much more.

First-Week Sales: 802,000 copies, a record for a debut artist until Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP

3. Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Momentum Builders: As one-third of the Fugees, the New Jersey native became an international sensation, leading to speculation that she would break free from the group to pursue a solo career.

L-Boogie wasn't even the first refugee to break from the collective, as Wyclef Jean instead delivered his debut, The Carnival. Just a year later, though, Hill burst onto the scene as a producer, singer and rapper on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

The concept album found Hill exploring failed romantic relationships, frayed communication between her and her group members, and her new life as a mother. On "Lost Ones," she fired off searing lines about 'Clef and Pras, accusing the pair of losing sight of the group's mission once they achieved success. "Ex Factor," a Stevie Wonder-inspired slow-burner, painfully detailed a brutal mismatch of the hearts and a union that could no longer be. And on "Zion," Hill gave us a soul-stirring testimony of life's gifts, delivering a candid tale of her personal decision to choose family over career.

The result was a critically hailed project that went on to not only do well in the hip-hop community, but also be heralded in the mainstream: Lauryn became the first hip-hop artist to earn an Album of the Year Grammy.

First-Week Sales: 422,624 copies, helping her set a record for biggest opening week by a female artist

4. DMX's It's Dark and Hell Is Hot

Momentum Builders: X was a typhoon, hurricane and tsunami all rolled into one. The Yonkers, New York, rap star took the game by storm, washing away the glitzy era of Bad Boy Records and their shiny suits. The Def Jam star was rough, raw and uncompromising. He could also be vulnerable, and his gruff appeal had a way of making even the most put-together woman swoon.

It was with the Dame Grease-produced "Get at Me Dog" that Dark Man X announced his arrival. Hype Williams eschewed his fish-eye lenses in favor of a handheld style for the clip, which captured the rapper's frenetic energy at its finest. The two would later revisit their work on "Belly," both the director and rapper's big-screen debut, powered by X's magnetic screen presence and unruly charisma.

Musically, DMX's urgent delivery drove tracks like the pulsating "Stop Being Greedy" and the soaring album intro, one of the most ear-rattling openings in hip-hop history. On numbers like "How's It Goin' Down," though, he showed off a softer side, proving he had the gift of gab and the ability to speak to the ladies.

The rapper was in heavy demand, joining Jay-Z on top of the rap heap in a post-Biggie/Tupac landscape. That X was the antithesis of Jay — forceful to the Brooklyn lyricist's ease, an open book to his counterpart's detached nature — only helped him fill the shoes left by the Thug Angel who was 'Pac.

By the time his debut album dropped, he was clearly in the top spot, which would prove to be rarefied air occupied by just a few during Jay-Z's impressive run from the late '90s through the 2000s.

First-Week Sales: 251,000 — not a gigantic haul, but the dog still landed atop the charts and began his run of five consecutive albums that would debut at #1

5. Drake's Thank Me Later

Momentum Builders: Drake dropped one of the biggest mixtapes in history in February last year with So Far Gone — no exaggeration. The brilliant, epic tape spawned a #1 single ("Best I Ever Had") and earned Drake two Grammy nominations, and he was then able to sell the thing — with fewer songs and after all his fans got it for free months earlier.

The accolades are well-documented, and the hype from So Far Gone alone probably would have landed him on this list. But Drake hasn't stopped his one-man fire brigade since then. If the mixtape didn't convince you of his talent, he had plenty of other evidence to prove his point.

While some artists have the knack of placement power, appearing on songs that could clearly be hits without them, Drake has turned songs into hits with his cameos; "Money to Blow" and "4 My Town" with the Birdman and Timbaland's "Say Something" are a few testaments. Meanwhile, Drizzy kept up his street due diligence with underground bangers alongside Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and Nipsey Hussle, while fulfilling his obligations to hip-hop's number-one family, Young Money. YM's "Every Girl" was a monster smash last year, and the heat of "Bedrock" bled into this year.

Thank Me Later leaked two weeks ago, but his label is so confident in its selling power, they haven't moved up the release date.

First-Week Sales: Still TBD, although experts have predicted anywhere between 300,000 and 700,000, while Lil Wayne is hoping for 2 million

Kristen Stewart Calls Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb' Her 'Theme Song'

Although her character, Bella Swan, is under siege by raging newborns in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," Kristen Stewart tells us her portrayal was a far less tortured one this time around. So much so that she ditched her plan to make an "Eclipse" playlist, a practice that helped her get into Bella's moody headspace on "New Moon." Instead, she went back to listening to regular old KStew tunes.

"I always listen to music, but I had particular music that I listened to on 'New Moon,' but didn't really have to for 'Eclipse,' " she told MTV News over the weekend, while promoting the June 30 flick in Los Angeles. "I just listened to my normal music. Bella's less tortured. She's less conflicted. I mean ... it's the most she's conflicted about the love triangle [but] that happens sort of at the end."

Stewart said that for the most part she "cruises through" the drama in the third movie, adding that the real dilemma is Bella's struggle to adapt to her future as a vampire: "The main conflict is the danger and the fact that she's losing her human life. That her family's gonna soon maybe go away. When I was doing 'New Moon,' I needed the music and I needed my iPod all the time and I needed to be in my own little head, but in 'Eclipse' ... the story was just different."

So what's a "normal" soundtrack for Stewart? Well, it turns out she has Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga on repeat.

"[I've] probably [been listening to] a little bit of both," Stewart admitted. "But I don't know, 'The Climb' is my theme song — and I'm sticking to it."

Katy Perry Explains Her Lady Gaga 'Blasphemy' Tweet

Last week, the same day Lady Gaga premiered her clip for "Alejandro," fellow pop star Katy Perry posted a tweet that many fans thought was in response to the video's religious imagery. "Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke," Perry posted.

In a new radio interview, the "California Gurls" singer clarified her comment, noting that it wasn't solely about Gaga.

"What's funny is that everybody was assuming I was directing it completely towards her, and if I was directing something I would write their '@,' " she told a French radio station Sunday in a clip posted on PerezHilton.com. "Lately, I've just been seeing some things that are kind of like, I don't know, in my own personal feelings, a little bit like not something I would do, I guess."

She went on to specify that it wasn't just Gaga's "Alejandro" that left her underwhelmed by pop culture's use of religious imagery.

"You know, when Madonna was on a cross, and sometimes my boyfriend will say things that are a little bit 'eh' for me, from where I come from," she said of her upbringing with her parents, who are both pastors. "It's hard for me to say that, because sometimes I'm a very hypocritical person. Everybody's like, 'How do you say that and you kissed a girl?' And I think sometimes, most of the time, you can disagree or agree, spirituality and sexuality are two separate things, and then when you decide to put them into the same subject, it gets interesting for some people."

Perry said that regardless of her opinions on using religion in pop culture, she still loves Gaga. "Everybody knows, I've said it maybe 100 times on my Twitter, I'm one of the biggest Lady Gaga fans and Madonna fans and Russell Brand fans," she explained. "It's just that, like, of course, some people have different viewpoints."

Drake says the MCs have a 'playful relationship.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Young Money stars Nicki Minaj and Drake are two of the hottest MCs in hip-hop, and their relationship has some thinking that the pair are hooking up in ways beyond a label affiliation. The stars were candid about their feelings for each other in recent interviews with MTV2's "Sucker Free Countdown" — and addressed rumors that their relationship isn't strictly platonic.

"Me and Nicki have a really playful relationship," Drake told DJ Envy. "When I was on tour ... I saw Nicki for the first time and, like, literally fell in love. She had this snap-back hat on that said 'Minaj.' She used to wear that every single day. She was like a theater student and she was so cold at rapping."

Drake — who rushed to Minaj's defense last week after Lil' Kim said some untoward things about her — said that before breaking through, he had to contend with her somewhat icy demeanor. "I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry's [Famous Deli]. I was like [to Minaj], 'You want food, you hungry?,' and she was like, 'Yeah, I want some food.' I was like, 'I'm in, we gon' eat food together.' I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, 'Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.' "

But Drake maintains that his feelings for her have always been genuine. "I've always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she's always just looked at me as, like, her little brother."

Envy pointed to a line on the track "Miss Me" from Drake's Thank Me Later LP — which is released Tuesday — where he says he wants to put a ring on it as proof of his true feelings for Minaj. "I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I'd admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f---ing did it/ And girl, I'm f---ing serious/ I'm with it if you with it/ 'Cause your verses turn me on and your pants are mighty fitted," Drake spits. But Drizzy insisted the lyric is not that deep. "That line on the album is just me playing with her. I'll be playing with her for years until she's ready to go, and then I'm ready," he added.

For her part, Minaj shrugged off any notion that she and the Young Money heartthrob are more than friends. She giggled when Envy broached the subject but then immediately shut down rumors.

"Drake does not have a crush on me," Minaj assured Envy. When Envy brought up the "Miss Me" lyric, Minaj responded, "Drake knows how to get you guys' attention."

As one of the most sought-after MCs in the game right now, Minaj is probably getting stepped to all the time. But when Envy asked how dudes should approach the diva, she dismissed the idea of a relationship.

"I don't want to be hollered at right now. I just don't. I wanna go and hibernate and coop up somewhere and be alone," said Minaj, adding that she's waiting until after her debut hits shelves before she gets scooped up. "Then maybe we can talk."

Catch more Nicki Minaj with DJ Envy on the "Sucker Free Summer Countdown" from Boston's 94.5 Summer Jam, this Sunday, June 20, at noon ET only on MTV2.

Robert Pattinson Wanted To Do A 'Dumb' Kiss At MTV Movie Awards

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were all but guaranteed to win Best Kiss going into this year's MTV Movie Awards, and sure enough, victory was theirs. But when the time came for the "Twilight" co-stars and are-they-or-aren't-they-dating duo to take the stage and lock lips in front of the whole world, there were no sparks to be found — unless you count the sparks of awkwardness.

Even Pattinson himself owned up to the awkwardness of the moment, telling MTV News after the smooch: "I had the best ideas last night, and I was telling everyone, 'Listen, just leave it to me, I've got it all under control.' ... I was telling everyone all these ideas. I gave them a whole selection, and no one thought they were funny, so then we ended up doing something which didn't work."

Now, one week later and with some perspective under his belt, how does Pattinson feel about how the kiss went down? Well, still pretty awkward. But while promoting "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," Pattinson defended his original idea "to do something dumb."

"The idea of kind of doing this big romantic kiss, like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams did [for 'The Notebook'], I couldn't do that," he told MTV News. "I'd be so embarrassed! So I just thought, 'We better do something dumb.' But then Kristen didn't want to do something dumb!"

Barring a rainstorm of cinematic romance in the next several months, Pattinson and Stewart will almost certainly find themselves nominated for Best Kiss again at next year's Movie Awards for "Eclipse" — a likelihood that is not lost on the "Twilight" heartthrob.

"Next time, I don't even know what I'll do," he laughed. "There are only so many variations on [the awkward kiss]."

Well, it's a good thing he has a year to work on some ideas.

Megan Fox has enjoyed her fair share of high-concept movie roles in the past several years, with characters ranging from a demonic succubus in "Jennifer's Body" to a gun-slinging prostitute in "Jonah Hex." But her upcoming turn as a winged circus freak in director Mitch Glazer's "Passion Play" might be her most surreal yet — thanks largely to the assistance of co-star Mickey Rourke.

"Mickey is such a beautiful, wonderful human being," Fox told MTV News. "He's so genuine and so sweet and so talented. I just love him to death. I kept telling him that he needs to have kids, because I think he's going to be an amazing dad. I hope he does that soon."

The words "genuine and sweet" might not be the first to come to mind for moviegoers who know Rourke best for his menacing turns in "Iron Man 2," "The Wrestler" and "Sin City." But Fox confessed that she feels a bond with Rourke because they are both celebrities who march to the beat of their own drummers and say what they feel. In fact, Fox's admiration for Rourke goes so far that she got inked up in his honor.

"I actually got a tattoo that is sort of in honor of him," she revealed. "It's on my ribs. I don't know if it's been photographed yet, but it'll come out eventually, I'm sure. I just love him very much and think he's very special."

Fans who have fantasized about catching the self-proclaimed "inventor of sex" up close and personal are in luck: Trey Songz is coming to a city near you, as he hits the road this summer for his Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour. The nationwide tour — named for his upcoming album — kicks off on August 6 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and wraps up in New York City on September 17. Fellow soul star Monica will join the crooner on the road.

Songz's success has exploded since the release of his hit album Ready, which spawned burners like "Say Aah" and "Successful." Earlier this year, he rocked as an opening act on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour and even found time for Hov's homie President Obama, visiting the commander in chief at the White House, along with Jigga and Beyoncé.

More recently, the singer performed his own "MTV Unplugged" special, where he left the mostly female crowd squealing — a feat he managed again during his set at this month's Hot 97 Summer Jam concert in New Jersey. (According to the tour press release, Songz has also filmed a BET docu-series titled "My Moment.")

The "Successful" singer said concertgoers will not only be treated to intimate performances, but they'll also get to hear him debut new material. The tour "is not just another show; it will be an up close and personal experience for everyone," Songz said in a press release issued by his label, Atlantic. "Come see me perform your favorite songs live and hear new music from my upcoming album, Passion, Pain, & Pleasure, for the first time."

"Trey and I are dedicated to making sure that each night is an experience that is fulfilling to the heart and soul," Monica added in the release.

In addition, the singer's September 12 show at Club Nokia in Los Angeles will be filmed by MTV to be broadcast later this year.

'Jersey Shore' Star The Situation Prepares Debut Single

Club banger called (of course) 'The Situation' will be released on iTunes this week.
By Gil Kaufman

You've seen plenty of the abs, now you're going to hear the voice that goes with the six-pack. "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is preparing to drop his first single this week. The fist-pumping, floor-slapping dance track titled, of course, "The Situation," is a collaboration with Fatman Scoop, DJ Class and the Disco Fries, according to TMZ, which posted a brief clip of the tune on Monday (June 14).

Slated to hit iTunes this week, the tune has a basic techno backbeat and finds "the Sitch" Auto-Tune singing his way through lyrics about a debauched night out at the club over the kind of banging track he's probably used to hearing from his pal, Pauly D.

"We got a Situation here," fitness center assistant manager-turned-reality star says at the outset over air-raid blasts that sound like one of those annoying vuvuzela horns fans are constantly honking on at the World Cup.

"The motherf'in Situation/ What the hell are you lookin' at?/ Can a DJ get in like that/ Grab some ass, drink some 'yac/ All I do is (bleep) until I get my cash/ Where the ladies at?/ I ain't at a bar to get drunk alone/ I'm gonna take a hottie home." Sorrentino's vocals are tweaked until almost unrecognizable, but the sentiment in the lyrics seems to be in line with his full-throttle party lifestyle.

A spokesperson for Sorrentino could not be reached for comment at press time. The GTL evangelist also didn't appear to make any reference to the song on Sunday, when he made an appearance at L.A. Sunset tanning salon in Hoboken, New Jersey, where fans lined up hours early to meet him and get his autograph, according to the Jersey Journal.

Though it's unclear if the song is a one-off or perhaps Mike's attempt to break into the music biz, it would make him the second "Shore" housemate to dip their toe into the pool. Pauly D was recently nominated in the annual America's Best DJ competition, which pits him against 100 other top club spinners from across the globe.

Do you want to hear more of the Situation's music, or should he just stick to the GTL he's best at? Talk about it in the comments.

Season two of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

Afrojack Talks His 'Freaky' Lady Gaga 'Alejandro' Remix

Gaga's people wanted 'that crazy Afrojack vibe,' so Dutch DJ/producer 'went really crazy.'
By Akshay Bhansali

"Lady Gaga, she's a freak," Dutch DJ/producer Afrojack told MTV News on Saturday, "so I thought, 'Gotta make a freaky song!' "

He's referring to his remix of Lady Gaga's most recent single and video, "Alejandro," which is among a collection of remixes featured on Gaga's recent Alejandro: The Remixes EP.

In the electronic/dance music world, Nick van de Wall (a.k.a. Afrojack) is one of the genre's rising stars: His mentor is crossover star David Guetta, and he has been instrumental in popularizing the "Holland House" — or as he calls it, "bleep" — sound.

Interestingly, when Gaga's camp put in their request for the remix, at first Afrojack thought it better to deliver a more pop-radio-friendly track. But as fans of Lady Gaga have come to know, she prides herself on keeping it real. Turns out Gaga wanted a dirty, more underground Afrojack joint.

"First I thought, 'Let me just give them a soft mix,' " Afrojack recalled. "And they were like, 'No — we want that crazy Afrojack vibe.' And so I went really crazy. I was even in the studio like, 'This is pretty damn hard.' I sent it and they were like, ' F--- yeah!' "

Afrojack also told MTV News that he recently completed an official remix for Diddy-Dirty Money's "Hello, Good Morning," and that fans should expect some serious house.

"It's like really, really underground," Afrojack said. "Even more than the 'Alejandro' remix — like even more back to the underground, purely for the house heads, because I know [Diddy] works with Felix Da Housecat. He's really into that electro stuff, so I thought, 'You know what? I'm gonna make him a really underground mix.' "

What do you think of Afrojack's take on "Alejandro"? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Talks Possible 50 Cent Collabo

Young Money diva breaks down the possibility of working with her fellow Queens natives.

Nicki Minaj is steadily building a rep as one of hip-hop's most unpredictable artists with her ever-changing Day-Glo hair colors and collaborations with everyone from Robin Thicke to Mariah Carey to Ludacris.

With the buzz about the "Massive Attack" MC's upcoming debut album heating up, fans are on the lookout for who the Young Money Barbie may work with next. As one of the biggest stars to come out of Queens in recent years, a collabo with Southside titan 50 Cent might be a logical step. However, Minaj said that despite sharing a hometown, she and Fif haven't come across each other yet.

"Our paths never crossed, and it's weird," Minaj told DJ Envy in a recent episode of MTV2's "Sucker Free Countdown." "I did meet [Lloyd] Banks, like, once or twice before."

Even if Minaj is planning a major Queens anthem with 50 Cent, she's keeping the details under wraps. "If there is a big surprise, I'm not gonna tell you, Envy," Minaj teased. "I know everybody will know by the time I say it. You gonna tweet it and stuff. It's gonna be on the radio. I mean, why would I tell you that?"

If a Minaj/50 collabo did go down, the rising star would have something else in common with fellow femcee Lil' Kim, who has been taking shots at the Young Money diva. Kim and Fif worked together on the raunchy hit "Magic Stick" from Kim's 2003 album, La Bella Mafia.

It would also be an interesting matchup since 50 has been going at Minaj collaborator and rumored manager Diddy in recent interviews, saying the Bad Boy mogul's music "sucks right now."

Catch more Nicki Minaj with DJ Envy on the "Sucker Free Summer Countdown" from Boston's 94.5 Summer Jam, this Sunday, June 20, at noon ET only on MTV2.

Adam Lambert's 'If I Had You' Video Frolics In Politics

New video aims to celebrate how dancing and partying bring everyone together.
By James Montgomery

A few months ago — back when he was still the reigning "American Idol" runner-up — Adam Lambert told MTV News about the meaning of his latest single, "If I Had You," the video for which has just premiered on VH1.com.

"Basically, what it's saying is no matter what color your skin is, no matter what religion you are, no matter what your sexuality is ... we can all party together," he said. "And all this other stuff — money, success, fortune, fashion, glam — it's all great, but it doesn't mean anything if you're not connecting."

Clearly, Lambert was thinking big with the song, which meant that it needed an equally epic video. Early sneak peeks had him rocking spiked shoulder pads and gallivanting through a forest, and Lambert himself promised that things would get "kind of psychedelic." And on Monday (June 14), we finally got to see the finished project, an over-the-top affair that's, yes, kind of psychedelic and even a tad bit political.

Though mostly, it's just a pretty awesome Euro-pop video.

The clip opens with Lambert — in a leather duster coat and gloriously braided pseudo-rattail — storming his way down a forest path. Whether he and director Bryan Barber intended it to or not, the scene recalls Men Without Hats' classic video for "The Safety Dance" (all that's missing is the lute-playing little person). From there, Lambert discoverers a clearing in the forest, one packed with party people — of all races, colors, creeds and proclivities, naturally — who are all in the midst of a totally excellent celebration. (Most of said party people are actually Lambert's friends, from his days performing with L.A.'s "Zodiac Show.") Overtaken, Lambert has no choice but to join in on the fun, and from there, things get psychedelic, all brightly blurring colors and whooshing chemtrails and, uh, Allison Iraheta.

And the message is pretty clear (if not a tad bit idealistic): Humanity can, in fact, put their differences aside and just dance. Perhaps that's the way to solve all of our global conflicts. Who's to say Lambert's not right? Like all great pop stars, he's not afraid to dream.

Megan Fox Describes Her Painful 'Jonah Hex' Corset

'We got [my waistline] down to 18 inches,' she tells MTV News of the costume.

There are many things a moviegoer can expect going into "Jonah Hex," the Josh Brolin-starring DC Comics adaptation hitting theaters this weekend. For one, there are plenty of stylized shootouts. For another, the titular Hex is a grizzly gunslinger with an ugly mug that gives Two-Face from "The Dark Knight" a run for his money.

Then, of course, there's Megan Fox's waistline.

The "Jennifer's Body" actress and former female lead of the "Transformers" franchise stars in "Hex" as Lilah, a gun-wielding prostitute with a very tight-fitting corset. Early photographs from the "Hex" set left many fans dumbfounded at just how constricting Fox's corset appeared to be, leaving the actress with what she described to MTV News as an 18-inch waistline.

"It's small," she admitted. "We got it down to 18 inches. But in the action scenes, we loosened it up, because everyone was afraid I was going to pass out."

As if the discomfort weren't bad enough, Fox's midsection suffered even when the corset was off. "At the end of the day when we would take it off, it would leave these deep grooves, these deep indents from the boning in the corset," she described. "I'd have it for the whole next day. The next 24 hours I'd be imprinted with the corset. It hurts your ribs!"

But don't go thinking Fox is completely anti-corset based on her "Hex" experience. "I do think there's a place for corsets," she said. "I think they should come back. They should make a reappearance. I enjoy them, but maybe I'm sick."

Sadly, the actress wasn't able to take her character's corsets home as souvenirs from the set. "Those were all actually vintage corsets that needed to go back," Fox said. "I couldn't own them. Plus, they were all falling apart by the end of the movie. I beat them to hell."

New Xbox 360 Plus ESPN And Kinect Exclusives Announced At E3

'Halo: Reach' and 'Star Wars' demos debut during Microsoft media briefing.

Microsoft grabbed attention at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this week before the event even began. Their Sunday presentation featuring Cirque du Soleil confirmed Project Natal's official name as Kinect. Then, the global media briefing on Monday (June 14) unveiled Microsoft's new motion controller's full range of media capabilities, as well as an Xbox Live partnership with ESPN, an exclusive "Call of Duty" agreement and demos for new games including "Halo: Reach" and an unnamed "Star Wars" title for Kinect, which will launch in the U.S. on November 4.

"A decade ago, we unveiled Xbox to the world, and this year, our 10th year, is the biggest year in Xbox history," Don Mattrick, Microsoft senior vice president of entertainment, proclaimed at the event. "It's the biggest year for blockbuster games. It's the year that movies, music, television and sports all come together on Xbox 360."

The Xbox-centered event featured a long list of guest speakers, just as it has in years past. Among this year's surprises were ESPN hosts Josh Elliott and Trey Wingo. The two "SportsCenter" anchors introduced their network's new face on Xbox Live, which will include a wide range of programming selections and commands made possible by Kinect.

"Sports fans will now have access to over 3,500 live and on-demand events, including college football, college basketball, Major League Baseball, the NBA, soccer and more," Wingo said.

Most of the offerings will be available in HD, according to Wingo and Elliott, who used a segment from last season's USC/ Ohio State football matchup to showcase Kinect's voice commands. Elliott proceeded to select his favored team and then call for instant replays on the fly.

Similar commands will be used for video viewing through Microsoft's Zune movie player on the 360. The E3 demo walked its audience through a series of options, including motion and voice actions that paused, played and otherwise replaced traditional push-button controls. Additionally, Microsoft integrated its movie player into a segment about the Video Kinect chat application that allows users to see each other and watch a movie simultaneously.

"Whether in the same room or separated by thousands of miles, communication with others is central to who we are as people," Marc Whitten, Xbox Live corporate vice president, explained. "It's why we've always believed in voice chat and party chat. It's why we've included a headset with many of the Xbox 360s and all of the Live starter packs we've sold, and now with Kinect, the same magic that allows you to control your Xbox 360 with your voice also allows you to communicate with the people you care about."

Whitten also announced that Xbox Live would be expanding on Microsoft's mobile operating system, allowing more access to many of its features.

"On Windows Phone 7, your friends, your avatars and your achievements will be with you wherever you go," Whitten stated. That news came with a new, smaller Xbox 360 reveal later in the program, as well as a list of exclusive Xbox Live agreements.

The updated Xbox 360 will be black and ship to retailers this week with a 250GB hard drive, internal wireless Internet capability and a $199 price tag.

The lineup of games Microsoft and its partners showed off introduced a handful of the 15 launch titles for Kinect. These included "Kinectimals," an animal-handling game featuring a pet tiger cub; "Kinect Sports," a "Wii Sports"-style collection of soccer, bowling, track and field, table tennis, boxing and volleyball competitions; a kart racing game called "Kinect Joy Ride," which was previously announced without a Kinect association; and "Kinect Adventures," a competition-based title using outdoor activities such as rafting.

Kinect will allow midgame photos to be taken of players while they interact with the motion system. Those shots can then be uploaded to various social-media channels.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops" received the biggest non-Kinect-game spotlight, as Mattrick announced "an exclusive multi-year agreement between Xbox and Activision." "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" recently saw its map packs get an early release on the 360. According to Mattrick, that will be the standard approach for all "Call of Duty" content in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

"Starting with the release of 'Black Ops' on November 9, all 'Call of Duty' add-ons and map packs will launch first on Xbox 360," he said.

The remainder of the program premiered demos of "Halo: Reach," "Metal Gear Solid: Rising," "Gears of War 3," a new Forza game, Harmonix's new Kinect-ready "Dance Central" title, Ubisoft's "Your Shape: Fitness Evolved" and finally an unnamed "Star Wars" game that will involve lightsaber combat using Kinect.

The new Xbox consoles will be the first of Microsoft's announced release to reach the general public this week, though most of the announcements won't fully test the gaming market until November. Nevertheless, Microsoft made a lot of friends in the audience, closing the event by letting everyone in attendance know that brand-new Xboxes were being shipped to their homes and offices.

'The Karate Kid' Filmmaker Talks Success, Sequel

'It far exceeded my expectations,' director Harald Zwart says of Jackie Chan/ Jaden Smith reboot's box office performance.

Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi are nowhere to be found, but the "Karate Kid" franchise is most certainly back in business. The Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith-starring reboot arrived in theaters over the weekend and kicked its way to a first-place trophy worth $56 million, surpassing the movie's production budget by more than $15 million.

"It far exceeded my expectations," director Harald Zwart told MTV News of the film's success. "I'm from Scandinavia and we are in no habit of letting our dreams get the better half of us. We keep our feet on the ground and wait until we see the reality, and this time it just really exceeded what I had hoped for. It was just amazing!"

Zwart caught the film in theaters opening weekend, watching it alongside complete strangers. Fortunately, these anonymous moviegoers seemed to love the martial arts adventure.

"You get worried when you sit there at the premiere and go, 'Oh, this is amazing. They love the movie.' Obviously, they would," the director said of his industry peers. "Going out to see it completely with an audience that you don't know and they also cheer in the end, you know you've done something right," he explained. "You live in a bubble as a filmmaker and no one can tell you the real truth, you just try to gauge it with tracking and everything. But until you're in a random movie theater that's packed ... I tried to go into the 11:00 show and I couldn't go! They were sold out! I was going to do the whole 'I'm the director of the movie' thing, but I figured they wouldn't believe me."

With "The Karate Kid" having established itself as a box office hit, there's already talk of a possible sequel. Zwart said that while another installment has been discussed, he and his team have only loosely tossed around the idea up until now — so as to avoid jinxing anything.

"Every now and then we discussed it," he said. "But the truth is, when you see Jackie and Jaden, they're like a really good film couple. On and off camera, I was watching how they were pulling practical jokes on each other and throwing rocks in the lake, and you just want to keep looking at them because they have a great dynamic and great humor. We have just been playing with a few different ideas, but we haven't landed on anything at the moment."

Zwart, speaking only for himself he said, would like to see another "Karate Kid" film explore an all-new story rather than follow in the cinematic footsteps of the '84 flick's two sequels. "I personally think it's now so much on its own two feet, given the success, that it would be interesting to see where we could take it without ever thinking about the old ones."

And Zwart said he would love to be the one at the helm of a "Karate Kid" sequel. "If they think I'm appropriate for it," Zwart added. "I think Sony has been fantastic for me. They're the best studio to work for. They're such a filmmaker-friendly studio. And [Will Smith's production company] Overbrook, in my opinion, is by far the coolest company. So, yes, I would love to work with them again."

For now, the director is happy enough that his flick is resonating with moviegoers.

"I'm just really happy that a really good film [was also] a success," Zwart said. "It's a movie where we decided to take our time to tell the story; we didn't compromise. Both the studio and the production company gave me, the filmmaker, the support and freedom to do the movie that I believed was right."

Michael Jackson's Mom Katherine Responds To Joe Jackson Accusations

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 02:08 AM PDT

'The world knows Mrs. Jackson has always been a loving and caring mother,' her lawyer says in a statement.

As the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death approaches, the war of words between his parents continues to get messy.

On Sunday, in a video posted on the website of Britain's News of the World newspaper, Jackson's father, Joe, tells a reporter he blames his wife (and Michael's mother), Katherine, for their son's death, because she didn't come to Michael's aid when he needed her the most.

"Mothers [are] always the one the son looks up to. I wanted her to step in and go in and say, 'Look, Michael,' a bit ... keep him cheered up, because, you know, if your mother's around you, the son, I would think, would feel better," Jackson said. "But she didn't want to do that, because she was afraid that she was invading his privacy ... and we argued about that several times.

"[I said] 'Katherine, if you don't go see him, he won't be with us too long,' " Jackson continued. "I thought he was looking kind of funny and frail a little bit. I told her, 'This would have not have happened if you had been with him awhile because he would have been more relaxed. By you being with him, things would've went much better than what they did. We lost our son now.' "

On Monday (June 14), a spokesperson for Katherine Jackson responded to those allegations, calling them — and Joe Jackson's actions — "outrageous."

"Joe Jackson's statements and conduct toward Mrs. Jackson are outrageous," Katherine's attorney, Adam Streisand, said in a statement to "Access Hollywood." "The world knows Mrs. Jackson has always been a loving and caring mother and grandmother, and she had a very special relationship with Michael. The world also knows who Joe Jackson is and he seems bent on never letting us forget."

Michael Jackson died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his Hollywood mansion. The Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled that the 50-year-old singer died of "acute propofol intoxication," in combination with the use of sedatives. Authorities have since claimed that his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered a lethal dose of the anesthetic to Jackson in and attempt to help him sleep. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February and has since pleaded not guilty in the case.

Do you think Joe Jackson's allegations were out of line? Let us know in the comments.
