'American Idol' Fans Happy For Both Lee DeWyze And Crystal Bowersox

Readers offer congratulations to both singers, but a number were angry that Bowersox didn't win.

Given that host Ryan Seacrest revealed on Wednesday night that going into the final they were separated by less than two percent of the vote, it's fitting that MTV News readers offered congratulations to both "American Idol" winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox on Thursday morning.

"I was so happy for Lee," wrote Imogen. "He said it was the best moment of his life. I know the Crystal fans are upset, but I can't imagine begrudging someone that kind of happiness. It was a lovely moment and I really do think he earned it." And unlike some of the sniping that went on last year when it appeared that flashy showman Adam Lambert had been robbed of the title by unassuming dark horse Kris Allen, the comments were mostly positive on both sides of the coin. OK, some of them were positive.

"Crystal is the new Janis Joplin," enthused Susan. "Finally, someone with some moxy and real soul. If you make a CD, I will buy it, if you go on tour, I will see you, and if you make a salad, I will eat it! Crystal ... you are the bomb!!!"

That sentiment was mirrored by Beverly, who remarked, "Crystal is the true winner. I remember when she tried out I said, 'she will be the one.' She sang better, already knew who she was and what she wanted to be before the show. But Lee, on the other hand was clueless ... although he did improve himself through out the season. Simon kept saying here is a guy in a small paint store who needs a break. Come on Simon, Crystal needs a break, she kicked butt all season long. She stayed true to herself every time."

A vast majority, however, were split, but still seemingly happy with the results, such as Johnohhhftw, who said, "I think Lee winning was a great thing! I wish the best for Crystal, but I thought Lee had a better voice. I'm sure even though Crystal lost she will release more music, so all you Lee haters shouldn't worry." Also toeing the line was Nicole, who extended a peace offering with the comment, "You know I think they both have amazing talent. Each one appeals to a different crowd. As far as all the Lee bashing goes, it's stupid. Crystal is better off not locked down by all the contract BS that goes with winning. They will both be signed and they will both have equal opportunity ... he will just have more strings attached ... Look at Adam Lambert. He didn't win but he is doing just fine."

Harmoniize couldn't have been happier with the outcome, crowing, "Lee DeWyze ... is a true 'Idol.' He not only worked hard for it, but he also has a voice that conveys a lot of emotion and captured a lot of hearts worldwide. He so rightfully deserves this. More power to you Lee!!!"

Then there were a number of vocal dissenters, such as La, who lamented, "Surprise, surprise. A come-from-behind cookie-cutter male rocker type beats out the unconventional, more talented 'favorite.' Idol show maneuvering, complete with timely song assignments, rumor mongering about dads/quitting, etc, judge buildups of the new and putdowns of the old, and a last week of talk show pimping do the trick. The unanimous judge results in finals for the unconventional performers merely stoke the voting frenzy for the cookie-cutters. Sounds like Cook-Archuleta, Allen-Lambert, and now DeWyze-Bowersox. Like her fellow runners-up, Crystal will sell concert seats and CDs. See you at the concerts, Crystal."

Others were just plain angry and felt Bowersox had been flat out jacked. "Crystal was robbed!" raged Kennith. "Teen girls should not be allowed to vote at all. A woman with talent will never win 'American Idol.' I bet another Kris Allen clone like Lee will win next year but I won't see it, I'm done with this garbage."

Cheryl Rae seconded that emotion, writing, "I am so tired of 'American Idol's inability to hit the jackpot! Crystal will not disappear half as fast as this year's 'Idol,' a ... what's his name?" Dennis went further, saying, "Crystal is the best they had. I like Lee, but he is as plain as oatmeal and they could have had something real. Kinda like last year."

'American Idol' Runners-Up Offer Hints To Crystal Bowersox's Career

Posted: 26 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT

For every Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken, there's a Blake Lewis and Diana DeGarmo.
By Eric Ditzian

At the close of this 43-episode ninth season of "American Idol," Crystal Bowersox stood as the most talented and consistent of all her peers. And it didn't matter a lick. Lee DeWyze and his growly tones triumphed, while MamaSox had to settle for second place.

But fear not! As students of "Idol" history know, an "Idol" loss is no guarantee of imminent obscurity. Just look at Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry or Adam Lambert for proof that the future can be bright. Of course, when it comes to second-place finishers, for every Lambert, there's a Diana DeGarmo or a Blake Lewis. How will Bowersox's career shake out? MTV News went back into the archives to dig up info on past "Idol" runners-up in a quest to discover the chances that we'll still be buying the 24-year-old singer's albums in years to come.

Justin Guarini, season one
Post-"Idol" life was busy for this floppy-haired inaugural runner-up. In short order, Guarini released both a movie ("From Justin to Kelly") and his self-titled debut album. Things haven't worked out so well since. The flick was "super pitchy, dawg" at the box office, opening with just $2.7 million in ticket sales, and his disc barely cracked the top 20 on the Billboard albums chart. He parted ways with his label and pumped out an independent, jazz-oriented sophomore album that didn't make a dent in the pop-culture consciousness. Guarini hasn't released an album since. Instead, he's appeared in a couple of straight-to-DVD movies and took on hosting duties on the TV Guide Network's "Idol" shows. Last year, he launched an unsuccessful campaign to get a song included on the "New Moon" soundtrack — a move that smacked of desperation. His next project is "Mafioso II" opposite Abe Vigoda. Yikes. Success score: 1.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Clay Aiken, season two
Aside from Sanjaya Malakar, there might not be an ex-contestant who's easier to ridicule, but let's give the dude his due: four top-five Billboard hits, two platinum-selling albums, a New York Times best-selling memoir. But in recent years, the ranks of the once-strong Claymate nation seem to be crumbling. Last year's The Very Best of Clay Aiken — a best-of disc after six years? — peaked at #173 on the Billboard chart. We'll have to wait and see how his next album, Tried and True, performs when it drops next month. Success score: 4 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Diana DeGarmo, season three
The mere mention of DeGarmo's name might leave even seasoned "Idol" addicts scratching their heads and thinking, "Um, who?!" The then-teen had an auspicious debut after the show ended, scoring a top-15 single on the Hot 100 with "Dreams." But her career took a downturn from there, as she appeared in a few stage musicals and recorded an indie country EP called Unplugged in Nashville. We expect more from our #2 finishers. 2010, though, gives us DeGarmo on an upswing: She nabbed the starring role in the Broadway revival of "Hair." Success score: 2 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Bo Bice, season four
In the season of the rocker, Bice came thisclose to being king. After the show ended, he battled a broken foot and emergency intestinal surgery, nonetheless releasing a #2 hit single and a #4 hit album — both of which went gold. His 2007 follow-up disc, See the Light, alas, stalled at #150 on the Billboard chart. What passes for his 2010 summer tour this year is nine stops across the U.S. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Katharine McPhee, season five
You could argue McPhee got robbed when she lost to gray-haired blues-meister Taylor Hicks. Or you could make the case that she never deserved to be in the final two in the first place (Daughtry, anyone?). What you can't deny is McPhee's middling post-"Idol" music career. Her self-titled debut album hit the #2 Billboard spot, but when it failed to have staying power, she was dropped by her label. Her sophomore effort made even less of a splash, barely cracking the top 20. We applaud McPhee for branching out into acting — see her turn in the surprisingly charming "House Bunny," which went on to gross almost $50 million — but we hope for a more impressive musical career out of our "Idol" second-placers. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Blake Lewis, season six
Lewis rode his beat-boxing skillz to within one night of an "Idol" crown. Producing musical beats with your mouth, it turns out, can only lead you so far in the real world. His Audio Day Dream barely cracked the top 10 on the Billboard albums chart and promptly plummeted. He was dropped by his label seven months after the album landed in stores. His next disc sold 4,000 copies. Success score: 1 out of 5 "Idol" stars

David Archuleta, season seven
The Arch Angels and millions of other "Idol" voters almost delivered a win for the little guy. He settled for second place, and his first album settled in at #2 on the Billboard chart, eventually going gold. Archie also won five Teen Choice Awards. His 2009 Christmas album, however, only hit #30 on Billboard's list. He returned to the "Idol" stage this season to perform John Lennon's "Imagine" and is reportedly working on another album. That disc will be the key to knowing if the kid can reinvigorate his career or if his best days are behind him before he even exits his teenage years. Success score: 3.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Adam Lambert, season eight
Just a year into his professional career, it's a little early for a comprehensive judgment of 2009's #2. What we can say for certain is that Lambert currently enjoys one of the highest profiles of ex-Idols, regardless of finishing place. His album debuted at #3, selling nearly 200,000 copies. And he sparked a controversy at the American Music Awards during a risqué performance, raising the question of whether there's no such thing as bad publicity. He's about to embark on a massive, three-month Glam Nation Tour in cities across North America. Success score: 4 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Lloyd Banks Wants To 'Make This A G-Unit Summer'

'If they think 'Beamer, Benz, or Bentley' is it, wait until you hear my second and third official single,' Banks warns.

Lloyd Banks says his club smash "Beamer, Benz, or Bentley" (and its remix) — is just the setup. Banks has a lot more material in the cooker.

"This is gonna pave the way for my official second single," Banks told MTV News last week, declining to give up the song's name. "We're gonna hit it right on summer at the beginning. That's gonna take us through the summer. I got the 50 Cent tour coming up; I'm gonna be on that joint. The first show is in Cleveland [on Friday]. But they can expect that [single] within a couple of weeks. We gonna let the remix bubble through Memorial Day weekend. They can also expect a new record from Tony Yayo as well. We gotta make this a G-Unit summer.

"My last album came out, I believe, October of '06," he continued. "I just been so eager to get out there and give the people what they expect from Lloyd Banks. If they think 'Beamer, Benz, or Bentley' is it, wait until you hear my second and third official single. It's definitely gonna be crazy."

His G-Unit partner Tony Yayo just put out his 50 Cent-featured "Pass the Patrón," but Banks said he isn't sure if 50 will drop a summertime song of his own.

"I know he's got the Black Magic album he's working on with Governor," Lloyd said. "Anything is possible; there's no rules. At this point, I've been moving as independent artists [do]. ... I don't know how fast that status will change or if that will be the outcome of everything and now we push forward. But for the moment, there's no rules, so you can kind of do whatever you want. There's no computer I have to wait in line for. If we feel that passionate about a record, we can press play, and move with it. [The same goes for] 50 Cent. We all gonna be out there. I think it'll be a beautiful thing to have two or three records bubbling from the same camp."

The Unit are independent, but maybe not for long. They're apparently closing in on a new home to distribute their music.

"We're very close," Banks confirmed. So close I want to tell you something now, but I don't want to ruffle no feathers," he added. "I don't want to get anybody nervous. It's gonna complement what we been doing, the hard work we been doing. It's gonna give us the international platform."

'Sex And The City 2' Stylist Patricia Field Describes Her Desert Inspiration

Posted: 26 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT

'Well, they were in a new location and it was a fabulous vacation,' stylist says of her over-the-top looks.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's been 12 years since "Sex and the City" premiered on HBO, and franchise stylist Patricia Field is as skilled as ever at having fans scramble to get the latest looks worn by Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. And while the women seem more settled in their personal lives in "Sex and the City 2," their looks have gotten almost more over-the-top than before.

When Field sat down to dream up the looks for the second movie, in which a lot of the action takes place in Abu Dhabi (by way of Morocco), she knew she'd have to up the fashion ante.

"There's a new script, and the script is my first inspiration, and hopefully in the script I will get the strike," Field told MTV News at the movie's premiere on Monday, where Kristin Davis dished that her favorite "SATC 2" look was the black Oscar de la Renta ball gown she wore to Anthony and Stanford's wedding.

Though the show and the first movie have featured adventures in Mexico, L.A. and Paris, Field knew that venturing to a place as glamorous and opulent as Abu Dhabi meant something completely different.

"Well, they were in a new location and it was a fabulous vacation, so when you're going on a fabulous vacation — I don't know if you ever have, but I have — [and when I have], I'm anticipating the most fabulous vacation," she said. "I pack my clothes [thinking], 'Wow, I'm gonna be, like, the guest of the sheik and [in] the palace with butlers and limos and private planes and camels and the desert.' So, I imagine where I'm going and get all excited and run and get all my wardrobe together, so that when I'm in the desert [it's like], 'Ahhhh!' "

While the first movie saw the return of Carrie's famous tutu from the series' opening credits, this sequel will show Carrie in the Galliano/Dior newspaper dress that sparked a trend back in season three. So, why that dress? "Do you have a better one?" she challenged. "So, that's the answer!"

What do you think of the fashions in the new flick? Which look is your favorite? Tell us in the comments!

'American Idol' Winners' Careers Give Clues To Lee DeWyze's Future

Posted: 27 May 2010 08:30 AM PDT

Will the season-nine champ be a Kelly Clarkson or a Taylor Hicks?
By Eric Ditzian

Lee DeWyze
Photo: FOX

"Oh my God. I don't know. This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything," Lee DeWyze said late on Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale. And thus, a new champion was born into the world.

As he heads straight to his career as a professional recording artist, the most obvious question is: Will he be as successful in the music biz as he was on a reality-TV competition? MTV News studied the history of "Idol" winners for clues about how the ninth-season champ's career might turn out.

Kelly Clarkson, Season One:

The first "Idol" champ set a crazy-high bar for all who came after her. You want album sales? A double-platinum debut. A sophomore disc that went platinum six times. You want awards? Two Grammys. You want staying power? Her latest disc hit the #1 Billboard spot. And how about we just forget about "From Kelly to Justin," OK? This summer she'll head out with the Lilith Fair tour. Success score: 5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Ruben Studdard, Season Two:

While the Velvet Teddy Bear has the best nickname of any "Idol" winner, there's nothing superlative about his track record as a recording artist. Though his first disc hit the #1 Billboard spot on its way to platinum status, the trend ever since has been downhill. His 2004 release, I Need an Angel, only went gold, and his third effort was even less impressive. His last studio album delivered his worst sales numbers, and his greatest-hits disc moved so few units we're embarrassed to print the actual tally. But hey, he looked great on Wednesday's show, slimmed down and rocking a dapper suit. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Fantasia Barrino, Season Three:

Fantasia's rendition of "Summertime" might be the finest "Idol" performance ever, a master class in vocal dexterity and emotive singing. The competition was hers from then on. Her post-"Idol" single, "I Believe," was #1 on Billboard for four straight weeks. But her first disc broke the streak of #1 Billboard hits for "Idol" winners. Still, Free Yourself went platinum. Like Ruben, Fantasia has struggled to follow through on her early success. Starting in 2007, she appeared on Broadway in Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple," and in 2010 she launched her own VH1 reality show, "Fantasia for Real." The singer is at work on a third album that she somewhat self-consciously promised (during an appearance on this year's "Idol") would return her to her musical roots. Success score: 3 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Carrie Underwood, Season Four:

The show's only country champ holds the title of highest-selling "Idol" contestant ever, with over 11.5 million albums sold. Her first album went platinum seven times, and her second went platinum twice. Her third album again hit the top Billboard spot and went platinum. She saw Clarkson's two Grammys, then raised her three more. Nine singles went #1 on the Billboard country chart. Another single, "Home Sweet Home," was season eight's farewell song. In April, Underwood became the first woman ever to be named the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year twice. You can't get much better than that. Success score: 5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Taylor Hicks, Season Five

There's always got to be someone at the bottom, right? That poor soul is the leader of the Soul Patrol. Hicks had a fast start after the show ended — a #2 Billboard debut that eventually went platinum — but his first effort was for many years the poorest-selling debut disc from an "Idol" winner (Kris Allen now holds that ignominious title). But unlike Allen, Hicks never sold singles, and his songs barely ever made it onto the radio. His second album tanked, and he spent last summer traipsing around the country with the touring company of "Grease." What passes for his summer tour is a whopping two dates: one at the Syracuse Balloon Fest and another at the 7th Annual Rocky Mountain Power Jam. Success score: 1 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Jordin Sparks, Season Six:

At 16, Sparks was the youngest singer to win "American Idol." Precocious she was. A huge seller she ain't, at least when it comes to albums. Her first album sold the fewest copies of any debut from an "Idol" winner, though it ended up going platinum and out-selling Hick's disc. Her second album cracked the top 10 but didn't even go gold. Yet she has three top-10 singles (one of which was a duet with Chris Brown) and has sold 9 million singles, thrusting her into the ranks of the top "Idol" performers of all time. She's got a packed summer of tour dates coming down the line. Success score: 3.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

David Cook, Season Seven:

Cook's got both platinum singles and a platinum debut, but no #1 album, and that puts him in the middle of the "Idol" pack. And that album, overseen by superstar rock producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), left much to be desired. Last year he embarked on an impressive, 30-plus-date summer tour, but this summer he'll hardly be seen out on the road. Cook, who was at a cancer benefit instead of Wednesday's season finale, is going to have to deliver an impressive sophomore effort to leapfrog the "Idol" winners currently ranked ahead of him. Success score: 3 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Kris Allen, Season Eight:

It's early in his career, but there's no doubting Allen has struggled. His debut disc has sold less than 300,000 copies. On the other hand, his singles have performed respectably well when it comes to radio play. He'll hit the road with the Barenaked Ladies this summer. It's an open question whether or not he'll ever enjoy a higher profile than Adam Lambert, the singer he vanquished on season eight. Then again, he rocked a solo performance on Wednesday night's finale, and Lambert was sitting out, reportedly resting his voice before heading out on tour. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 "Idol" stars

Why Adam Lambert, David Cook Were Absent From 'American Idol' Finale

It was an unprecedented gathering of "American Idol" royalty. On Wednesday night, all but one of the former "American Idol" winners took to the Nokia Theatre stage to sing a song in honor of departing judge and mentor Simon Cowell.

Lined up side by side were Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen and Taylor Hicks giving a rousing performance of Delta Goodrem's "Together We Are One." The "Idol" icons — mostly dressed in black — were joined by nearly two dozen finalists from past seasons, including such favorites as Jason Castro, David Archuleta, Michael Johns, Bo Bice and Elliot Yamin.

But where was season seven winner David Cook, the only champ missing from the crew? Cook explained that he was unable to attend because of a previous commitment to a cancer charity event in Kansas City. During his time on the show, Cook famously paid tribute to his late brother, who was battling the disease during the singer's "Idol" run. He did tweet his congratulations to winner Lee DeWyze though, writing, "Congrats to Lee Dewyze! So sorry I couldn't be there to see all my fellow idols. I'm there in spirit!"

Also conspicuously absent was last year's runner-up, Adam Lambert. Earlier in the day, a report surfaced that Lambert had been dropped from the number because he failed to attend rehearsals. Later it was reported that he'd been ordered by his doctor to rest his vocals. It was also reported that he'd not been invited to attend.

Lambert vigorously denied all those rumors in a fiery series of tweets, explaining, "Would have loved 2 have been at the Idol Finale to wish Simon farewell and support the finalists, but this tour for my fans is my priority." He later elaborated, "I have now just been made aware of more gossip and rumormill: First of all, I was never asked to appear on the finale in any capacity. 2nd: I DID come down w a throat bug most likely caught on my flight back from this past weekend's concert in Boston." He also explained that he'd been put on vocal rest on Tuesday after tour rehearsals.

Lambert also lashed out at what he considered the irresponsible reports on his absence. "Sad that I'm forced to defend myself bout situation no one pointing fingers knew any factual details about. I'm working so hard on this tour!! All i ever heard was: 'you've not been asked to perform on finale. Would you like to sit in the audience?' Me: sorry-Too much work to do today."

Much of the drama was created by PopEater.com, which claimed an exclusive earlier in the day on the "bedlam" behind Lambert's alleged no-show. A rep for Lambert lambasted that report, telling EW.com that the story about Lambert failing to show up to rehearsals was full of "false information."

Spokesperson Roger Widynowski said that like most "Idol" finalists, Lambert was approached by producers about being part of the alumni tribute to Cowell, but that the singer came down with a case of laryngitis over the weekend, and with his "Glam Nation" tour set to begin on June 4, he was placed on vocal rest. "He was never confirmed to do the show. He never skipped rehearsal," said Widynowski. Though he disagreed with claims that it was diva behavior that led to Lambert's absence, Widynowski did confirm that the glammy singer sent out a provocative tweet on May 19 announcing that he would not be at the finale. "Unfortunately not performing on 'Idol' Finale," Lambert wrote. "Guess they have plenty of artists booked."

Kelly Clarkson's Next Album Will 'Take It Up A Level,' Songwriter Says

'My Life Would Suck Without You' songwriter Claude Kelly is looking forward to working with Clarkson on her new album.

Kelly Clarkson's life might suck without Claude Kelly. So it's a good thing that the pop star and her "My Life Would Suck Without You" songwriter will soon be hooking up in the studio to work on tracks for her new album, a follow-up to 2009's All I Ever Wanted.

However Clarkson — who performed on the "American Idol" finale Wednesday night — is feeling these days, Claude Kelly is ready to use it as inspiration for the duo's next collaboration. "I'm ... really, really excited to go back in for Kelly Clarkson," Kelly told MTV News at the premiere for "Sex and the City 2" on Monday. He says that if you loved what they did on All I Ever Wanted, they're not going to settle for anything less this time around.

"Well, I wrote 'My Life Would Suck Without You' for the last album, so we're trying to take it up a level," Kelly, who recently worked with Christina Aguilera for her Bionic album, said. "She's toured the world with that album. She's experienced stuff, so whatever she's going through right now: fun, good, the bad, the ugly — we want to put on that record."

Some of Clarkson's newer songs have already leaked to the Internet. But Kelly isn't letting that influence what he does with the singer. "I haven't heard the songs, but I heard there's been leaks," he said. "Kelly Clarkson is kind of a force of her own. Her voice and her mood determine what she does. So I just want to do what's on her heart 'cause that's how you get the best songs out of an artist like that, is for them to sing what they really mean."

What do you think Kelly Clarkson should do on her next album? Discuss it in the comments!

Bret Michaels Offers Advice To 'American Idol' Winner Lee DeWyze

'Enjoy what you're doing, live in the moment,' Poison frontman says backstage at the finale.

The only thing Lee DeWyze wanted to do in life is play music. Now that he's the new American Idol, the former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that.

He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour "Idol" finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" — offered some sage career advice.

Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox.

"Here's the thing: Enjoy what you're doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you'll have a long career," said Michaels, who was at the "Idol" finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart. "That's really the truth. That's what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], 'I gotta do it my way,' " he said. "I also would tell him ... make sure you love what you do. And don't ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul."

What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments.

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Big up to the homey, video director Spiff TV (Waka Flocka Flame's "O Let's Do It" remix and a slew of Rick Ross clips including "Rich Off Cocaine"). His close friend and manager Rick Ross may be doing huge-budgeted mini-movies with the likes of Diddy and director F. Gary Gray, but the Miami Bawse promises that he'll never stop doing the straight-to-the-Net videos Spiff directed — videos that his fans have grown to love over the past couple of years.

"Of course, man. You know we'll never stop releasing those black-and-whites, those virals," Ross explained. "We're actually editing a slew of them right now. So get ready. ... That's just another way we bring [the music] to life. We add color to the situation. We really love to be a part of the music and the history."

"When I hear a dope Busta Rhymes record, I feel like that's a part of history, and I want to be a part of that," he added about his rampage of creating unofficial remixes by adding verses to singles like Drake's "Find Your Love," Rocko's "Maybe" and Erykah Badu's "Window Seat." "I want to be a part of that music. I want to put a verse on that. I don't look at it as every record I jump on or every record I do for someone as necessarily more shine. It's not necessarily the case. It's always being a part of that moment in time."

Thursday (May 27) is a huge moment in time as T.I. is slated to drop his F--- a Mixtape and Ross is putting out his Albert Anastasia EP. Both are mixtapes and both are free for fans. Another thing both tapes have in common is that they are composed strictly of new music.

"Of course not," Ross answered about whether or not we would hear some of those unofficial remixes on the tape. "You mentioned 'Window Seat.' Shout out to the beautiful Erykah Badu, we got some things we're working on too. But this new mixtape we're releasing right before Memorial weekend, it's gonna be completely new music, new beats. Dope street ideas. It's strictly for the Teflon Don lovers. It's strictly for everyone that's excited for [the album's release date] July 6."

One new track that also won't make the cut for the Double A EP is the "Teflon Don Freestyle." He's not saving it for the album either. It's just out there.

"Nah, that ain't gonna be on the album," he said. "I got stuff that's much more potent than that. It's crazy the way I love that 'Teflon Don' freestyle. But it's like, when I started writing it, it had the potential to be big. When I finished it, compared to other bodies of work, it wasn't even worth me putting a chorus on it. I love it, and I feel that's a part of my mixtape arrogance. It's like it's a gift. I know it's dope and I know it would be a single on other albums. But this ain't even gonna make the mixtape. Just for online. This is just for MTV, this is for the bloggers, this just for the people who can't wait."

Lee DeWyze After 'American Idol' Win: 'I Don't Know Where I Am'

'It felt like there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,' he says of being named season-nine winner.

LOS ANGELES — Forgive Lee DeWyze for not being able to articulate what it was like to be named the winner of "American Idol" season nine.

"Honestly," he said backstage after the finale, "I can't even explain it to you. There was confetti flying, there was fireworks. I don't know where I am. I'm turning around. It just all happened so fast. It was amazing. It felt like there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. It feels really good. This is an amazing experience for me, especially since this has been a long process, and it's a lot harder than I ever thought it would be."

Now that the show is over, DeWyze said he gets to go out on tour, get in a studio and do what he loves best. When he finally does get to work on his album, he said it will be a mix of sounds: alternative, rock and folk.

He also addressed his final performances on Tuesday night, saying that even though he got critiqued harshly by the judges, he wouldn't change much.

"You'd think by the last week, you get it. They're going to say what they're going to say," he said of the judges. "But as long as you go out there, you try your hardest ... you can't really walk away with regret. There's been ups and downs. But that's what makes this show so great. You have to be vulnerable. Sometimes it's really awesome; sometimes it's not. I'm happy with what I did, for sure. I think anybody can go back and nitpick, but I love the songs I sang. I went out there and sang them, and I'm happy I did."

As for departing judge Simon Cowell, DeWyze said, "I think that he's honest and he says what he thinks, and I appreciate that about him."

DeWyze says this competition has changed him for good: "I'm going to hate Wednesdays for the rest of my life. I'm going to wake up on Wednesday and be like, 'Ugh, it's judgment day!' "

Usher's 'OMG': The Summer Jam Of 2010?

Posted: 27 May 2010 03:52 AM PDT

The club-approved single harkens back to his 'Yeah!' heyday.
By James Montgomery

Usher in his video for "OMG"

With his album Raymond v. Raymond and the overwhelming success of protégé Justin Bieber, it's already been a pretty good year for Usher.

But the real cherry on top would be if he could win the 2010 Summer Jam Sweepstakes. It looks like he has a good shot, thanks to his blazing single "OMG," a club-approved slab of electro-tinged R&B produced by the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am. The song harkens back to his "Yeah!" heyday, and much like that massive 2004 track, "OMG" also reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Whether it has the longevity of "Yeah!" — which stuck at #1 for 12 consecutive weeks — remains to be seen, but with the summer season upon us, it's certainly possible "OMG" could remain on top for a long, long time.

Because, wow, does this one sound great in a cavernous club. All robotic vocals and icy, minimal beat, it's reminiscent (sonically, at least) of Rihanna's mega-anthem "Umbrella," the song that proved you can sound positively chilly and still heat up the summertime months. Ush and Will also performed the track earlier this year on "American Idol," and the video — a head-whirling mix of dance moves and high-tech wooshes — has already racked up more than 4 million views on YouTube. So the stage seems set for it to dominate the summer.

Even if "OMG" does face some rather formidable competition this summer — from the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and B.o.B — Ush has been to the top of the mountain before, and we're not willing to bet against him this time out. Not to mention, there's nobody in the business who heats up a club the way Usher Raymond does. OMG, indeed.

Vote for the summer jam of 2010 in the MTV Newsroom now, and stay tuned all week for more on the hottest songs of the season.

'Sex And The City 2': Lost Girls, By Kurt Loder

Posted: 27 May 2010 04:58 AM PDT

The party's over.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon in "Sex and the City 2"
Photo: Warner Bros.

"Sex and the City 2" is a ghastly mess, a stake in the heart of the great TV series that ran from 1998 to 2004. This second "SATC" movie (I liked the first one) is misconceived on every level. Consider:

1. After opening with the usual helicopter footage of New York skyscrapers (Look, there's the Chrysler Building!), this very long picture decamps for what seems like half an hour to a gay wedding in Connecticut, complete with glittery male choir and a Liza Minnelli (!) dance number, which nearly sinks the film on its own. It then decamps even farther to Abu Dhabi, of all places, where there's no sex and, for the story's purposes, no city either. This is where most of the movie takes place.

2. Whereas the old TV series pioneered a mature new female candor about sex and relationships, this movie gives ample screen time to a busty young nanny who's shown cavorting with kids in a park while her breasts leap around inside her blouse with a life of their own. Later we see her chest accidentally sprayed with water, which turns that scene into a one-girl wet T-shirt contest.

3. To balance things out, we also meet a group of young hunks at a swimming pool and are given close-up crotch shots of their bulging Speedos. Later there's a hunky Danish architect and a lingering close-up of his crotch in all of its protruding tumescence. This character has naturally caught the eye of our gal Samantha (Kim Cattrall), still ravenously randy at the age of 52. She asks his name. It's Richard Spirtz. She decides to just call him Dick.

4. The writing, which was one of the glories of the TV series, sharp and pungent, is here abysmally juvenile. Samantha, upon learning that a World Cup soccer team has arrived on the scene: "Did they bring their balls?" And later, spotting a hot guy in the desert: "Lawrence of my labia!" At one point someone actually says, "Abu Dhabi do!"

No movie this boldly brainless should be set in an Islamic city — even one as famously Westernized as Abu Dhabi. After Samantha, who's been recruited to do PR for a local luxury hotel, arrives on the scene with her pals Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), we soon see them swanning around in their usual wildly inappropriate clothing (they seem to don garish new outfits every five minutes) and — in one of the film's many preposterous sequences — breaking out in a karaoke rendition of "I Am Woman" at a hotel nightclub while the other women in the audience — some of them Arab — cheer and sing along.

Since the position of women in traditional Islamic societies is famously, shall we say, constricted, there are issues to be dealt with here that are beyond the grasp of bubble-headed comedy. Miranda grows momentarily irate at the sight of so many Arab women wearing face-covering niqabs, but she can only respond with a very feminist cliché: "Some men really don't like strong women!" (As if she and they were victims of the same oppression.) We also briefly note that upon checking into the hotel, Charlotte drops her married name, Goldenblatt, in favor of her more goyish maiden name. This issue, too, is quickly shooed away.

Why writer/director Michael Patrick King felt compelled to take the "SATC" girls out of glamorous Manhattan and deposit them in the arid Middle East is baffling. The sleek elegance of their native turf was always part of the old series' fun. Abu Dhabi, with its golden domes and gaudy chandeliers and $22,000-a-night hotel suites, makes Miami look like Geneva by comparison. And Carrie and company are no longer footloose 30-somethings in the American city of dreams. They're now 40-somethings (and more, in the case of the loudly menopausal Samantha), and most of them are married, and feeling stifled. The high spirits that once drew us to them are long gone. Possibly King realized that the franchise was near-dead anyway, and awaited only the coup de grâce. This movie should provide it.

Don't miss Kurt Loder's reviews of "Micmacs" and "Prince of Persia," also new in theaters this week.

Crystal Bowersox On 'American Idol' Outcome: 'We Both Win'

'My life is never going to be the same, and I'm ready for all of it,' she says backstage after the finale.

LOS ANGELES — Don't cry for Crystal Bowersox. Before Ryan Seacrest announced Lee DeWyze as the new American Idol, the single mom said she knew she wouldn't be taking home the top prize.

"I knew Lee was going to win," she said backstage, minutes after the finale ended. "People seem to be surprised by that. But I had a feeling. I couldn't be happier for him. He deserves every minute of this. There wasn't really a reason why [I thought I wouldn't win]. It was just something that I felt and I knew, and I'm fine with that. Before the show ... I had this strange sense of peace and calm. I've been that way through the whole season. If you haven't noticed, I'm just mellow. I was ready and willing ... for the outcome. We both win. It's not win or lose; it's winner and non-winner. Both of us are going to have very successful careers, and we're going to be friends for a long time."

For Bowersox, winning was performing alongside Alanis Morissette and Joe Cocker. She also said she was moved by the tributes for Simon Cowell.

"Joe Cocker is a living legend, and every noise, grunt that came out of him, every fiber in my being felt it," she said. "He didn't give me any advice, but he kept calling me 'Angel.' He said, 'I know your name is Crystal, but I want to call you Angel.' And I'm like, 'That's fine. You can call me whatever you want. You're Joe Cocker!' "

Bowersox said she learned a lot about herself during the "American Idol" experience. The most important lesson?

"I can walk in heels — downstairs, nonetheless," she said, joking about her Tuesday night performance, where she wobbled a bit in high heels. "I've learned a lot about myself and I've learned a lot about the business. I already knew who I was, but I'm picking the things that I like and adding to it. My life is never going to be the same, and I'm ready for all of it."

Up next, Bowersox says she's going to go "hug my baby boy and get back to living." She'll start to prepare for the summer tour and also plans to get to work on her album.

"Now the real work begins," she said.

Mariah Carey Drops Out Of Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls ...'

'I'm not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time,' Carey's rep says about her decision not to star in the film.

Fans who have been looking forward to seeing Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson hit the big screen together for Tyler Perry's film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf" will be disappointed to learn that the flick is officially one diva short.

A rep for Carey confirmed to People.com that the singer decided not to appear in the flick this week, following Perry's confirmation of the cast to MTV News in April. Her rep, Cindi Berger, gave no concrete reason her departure but said, "I'm not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time."

Her dropping out of the film has many wondering if Carey is pregnant, a rumor that has been following her around since she married Nick Cannon two years ago. That rumor has to date not been confirmed.

Shooting for the film is expected to take place in New York City this summer, and the film will hit theaters in late 2010 or early 2011. Earlier this year, Perry (and Janet Jackson) listed the names of the women attached to the movie, which at the time included Carey. "It's Janet, Mariah, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose ... I don't want to forget anybody," Perry said. "It's pretty incredible."

The play "For Colored Girls ..." is a series of 20 poems telling the stories of seven different women, each of whom is identified with a color of the rainbow. The stories deal with a wide spectrum of topics including love, abandonment, rape and abortion.

'Lost' DVD Set Will Feature Hurley/Ben Epilogue

Star Michael Emerson says bonus feature will show 12-14 minutes of the duo's Island adventures.
By Adam Rosenberg

Hurley: "You know, you were a real good number two." Ben: "And you were a great number one, Hugo."

This brief exchange between Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Ben (Michael Emerson) in the final stretch of "Lost" series finale "The End" suggested that a lifetime of adventures unfolded for the Island duo before they eventually moved on and reunited with their friends in the pre-afterlife. And fans will actually get to glimpse those adventures when season six of "Lost" arrives on DVD and Blu-ray.

"For those people that want to pony up and buy the complete 'Lost' series, there is a bonus feature — you could call it an epilogue, a lost scene," Emerson said during an appearance on G4's "Attack of the Show." "It's a lot, 12 or 14 minutes, that opens a window on that gap of unknown time between Hurley becoming number one and the end of the series."

The revelation was greeted with gasps of surprise from the studio audience. Additional answers had been promised for the "Lost" season six DVD release, but no details had been revealed before Emerson spoke. Asked if he regretted making the reveal, the actor replied with a smile, "I'm rolling over that in my mind."

The follow-up question, of course, is if this footage might hint at some kind of "Lost" spin-off, something that showrunners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have sworn time and again won't happen — at least, not with them at the helm.

"It's self-contained," Emerson replied. "Although it's a rich period in the show's mythology that has never been explored. So who knows what will come of it?"

Do you think the adventures of Hurley and Ben would be enough for a whole new show? Sound off in the comments.

Sarah Jessica Parker Picks Her Favorite 'Sex And The City 2' Scene

'When I got to that stuff, I thought, 'All bets are off,' ' Parker says of scene involving Aidan.

In "Sex and the City 2," opening Thursday, Carrie makes a trek with her girls to Abu Dhabi, where she runs into onetime love Aidan. While fans are already weighing in on the great Mr. Big vs. Aidan debate, Sarah Jessica Parker told MTV News it was that pivotal scene in which the exes meet again that stands out as her "favorite."

"One of my favorite, favorite scenes that [director/screenwriter Michael Patrick King] wrote, and I can't explain why, is when Carrie is in the souk and she buys the pair of shoes and she talks to the beautiful man — that great actor who played the merchant — and then she turns around and she sees Aidan," Parker said.

The actress, whose turn as Carrie Bradshaw in both TV and film has made the character iconic, said that credit for those memorable scenes belongs to King.

"When I got to that stuff [about Aidan], I thought, 'All bets are off.' I just loved the way he wrote that entire middle section of the movie," Parker continued. "I love everything that he wrote, but that, visually, just in terms of the visual, it just really was arresting."

Parker explained that during the filmmaking process she's "so much a part of the beginning," but she falls back once King starts working his magic on a script.

"He really does go away and lock himself up and write alone," she said. "And it really is a solitary endeavor. ... There were visuals that were really, really, really important for me when I was first reading the script. Michael writes visuals as beautifully as he does words."

Travie McCoy Recalls His 'Hot Mess' Days On 'When I Was 17'

'In my brain, I was sexy,' Gym Class Heroes frontman laughs on the show, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
By James Montgomery

When he was 17 years old, Travie McCoy wasn't the long, lean sex machine most know him as today. Quite the opposite, in fact.

"Travie McCoy at 17 [was] crafty, artistic, but not sexy at all," McCoy laughed. "But in my brain, I was sexy."

But pretty much only in his brain. As an oddly proportioned kid growing up in Geneva, New York, McCoy was a gangly mix of dreads, tats, piercings and, of course, more than a little baby fat. It's the kind of thing he and his Gym Class Heroes mates can look back and laugh at now, but at the time, the situation was downright dire, as you can learn on the next episode of "When I Was 17," airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

"When Trav was 17 — I don't know if he'd want me to tell you guys, but he looked like a hot mess," laughed Gym Class drummer Matt McGinley, who met McCoy in high school and soon formed the group with him. "Trav kinda was big, tall, was a little pudgier than most kids. He was a pretty gnarly-looking kid at 17."

Of course, as we all know, McCoy overcame his awkward phase and has since gone on to become an emo/hip-hop heartthrob of the highest order — the guy who, at one point, had Katy Perry on his arm. And with his first-ever solo album, Lazarus, due next month, his sex-symbol status can only get bigger. So perhaps it's a good thing to look back on his old high school photos and laugh a bit.

"When Travis was 17, he had no game," his friend Chelsey laughed. "[He was] very tattooed, dreads, piercing."

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring McCoy, Kris Allen and Kourtney Kardashian — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

'American Idol' Finale: Lee DeWyze Upsets Crystal Bowersox

Posted: 26 May 2010 07:58 AM PDT

A cavalcade of performers hit the finale stage, including Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson and Bret Michaels.
By Gil Kaufman

They auditioned together in Chicago last summer, and they've become good buds in the nine months since. They're both 24 years old and were vying to be the first Midwesterner to win the "American Idol" title. One, Ohioan Crystal Bowersox, was the odds-on favorite to win it all for most of season nine, while the other, low-key Illinois-bred Lee DeWyze, came on strong down the stretch and threatened to pull out an upset victory.

On Wednesday night (May 26), when all the hoopla, oldies acts and teary goodbyes to departing judge Simon Cowell were finally said and done, it was DeWyze who emerged victorious in an "Idol" upset for the ages.

While Bowersox hugged him and looked loose and relaxed, DeWyze seemed gripped by nerves as he awaited word from host Ryan Seacrest. When the verdict was read, the former paint-store clerk and high school dropout with a musical dream bent over and looked like he was going to be sick. He was quickly swarmed by the top 12, emerging with a smile and the outburst: "Oh my God!"

When Seacrest asked how it felt to be the new American Idol, DeWyze laughed nervously. "I don't know! This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Thank you. Thank you," he said breathlessly, gesturing to the crowd with tears in his eyes and then hugging Bowersox and telling her that he loved her. "I've never been happier in my life," he added before breaking into his coronation song, "Beautiful Day," as a rain of sparks, confetti and lasers filled the air in the Nokia Theatre.

It was an unlikely ending to an uneven season with what many considered the shallowest "Idol" talent pool in memory and which suffered from a nearly 10 percent decline in viewership — but is still the #1 show on TV. Season nine saw the addition of fourth judge Ellen DeGeneres, whose quips and twisted food metaphors sometimes fell flat, as well as the departure of Cowell, considered the heart and soul of the judging panel.

But before DeWyze could celebrate the realization of his long-sought musical dream, the two-hour show trotted out the usual assortment of time-fillers. The battling finalists first took the stage in burgundy Hogwarts-style school uniforms, which made sense a short time later as former Michael Jackson guitarist Orianthi shredded the opening licks to Alice Cooper's season-appropriate summer anthem "School's Out," which the top 12 lip-synched alongside a kids' choir with dead eyes and the Coop himself.

Last year's champ, Kris Allen, came by to sing his new ballad, "The Truth," and one of the show's biggest stars, Carrie Underwood, showed the newbies how it's done with her sassy new single, the Kara DioGuardi co-written country rocker "Undo It."

Third-place finisher Casey James got one of the most plum assignments of the night, singing Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," with accompaniment by none other than surprise guest Bret Michaels, making his first stage performance since a string of recent health crises including a heart scare and a nearly fatal brain hemorrhage.

Some of this season's castoffs got one more chance to shine, with shaky vocalist Siobhan Magnus teaming up with Teflon teen Aaron Kelly for the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," which featured a cameo from the living Gibb brothers, Robin and Barry. Michael "Big Mike" Lynche hooked up with Michael McDonald for the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It to the Streets," while the top five girls joined Crystal for Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" which morphed into the grinding "Stronger." Aguilera herself showed up halfway through and eased into her new piano ballad "You Lost Me," which she sang while standing on a pedestal covered with light bulbs and wearing a black catsuit and spangly tights.

The top 12 harmonized on Janet Jackson's "Again," with Ms. Jackson herself strutting out in flowing black Elvira dress and her new short hairdo to take center stage and sing the hushed balled "Nothing." She later stripped off the dress to reveal a skintight black bodysuit for a strut through her signature hit "Nasty."

DeWyze drew the relatively long straw by leading the top five men in a medley of Hall & Oates songs, including "I Can't Go for That" and "Maneater," before the real-deal duo came out and killed it on "You Make My Dreams Come True." DeWyze later joined the band Chicago for a medley of their hits, including "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "If You Leave Me Now" and "25 or 6 to 4."

But the night's breakout moment began with Bowersox singing Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" in her blues-mama voice before Morissette herself emerged and the two women circled each other and snarled out the lyrics to Alanis' breakthrough 1995 hit "You Oughta Know," on which their powerful voices perfectly meshed.

The night's final performance found Bowersox and DeWyze harmonizing on the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends" with an assist from the man whose cover of the song is the second-most definitive version, '60s rocker Joe Cocker.

And on Cowell's final night, former right-hand lady Paula Abdul came via tape to participate in a montage honoring Cowell's top moments on the program. Comedian Dane Cook debuted "The Things That Simon Said," a touching acoustic ballad that strung together some of his most famous insults, including, "You came across like a background singer for a background singer." He almost got the whole song out before a parade of the show's most famous rejects came out and loudmouth head loony Ian Benardo stole the microphone from the joke man.

There was also the obligatory visit from one of this season's freak-show wash outs, General Larry Platt, who sang a beat-infected version of "Pants on the Ground" accompanied by a troupe of pants-sagging hip-hop dancers and, of course the ultimate "Idol" joke, William Hung.

Later on, Abdul took the stage and gave an extended monologue about her relationship with Cowell, who she said brought "immeasurable joy" to her life, saying the show would not be the same without him — but that it will go on.

Original Idol Kelly Clarkson also made an appearance, teaming up with fellow winners Underwood, Allen, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Hicks for "Together We Are One," which featured backup from a cavalcade of past top 12 finishers paying tribute to Cowell, who smiled as Abdul snuggled in his lap.

The acerbic judge then took the stage, admitting he was more overcome with emotion than he expected to be. "What Paula said is true: The show goes forward. It will be different," he said. "But I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support, the fun and your sense of humor." Cowell then kicked it back to fans in the audience, saying they were the ultimate judges of the show and that they've done a great job over the years. "It's been a blast. Thank you."

As much as Cowell's exit dominated the conversation, the night ultimately belonged to DeWyze, who kept the three-season streak of male winners alive. And, like small-town good-guy singer Kris Allen's victory last year over power vocalist Adam Lambert, DeWyze's coronation proved once again that sometimes it's slow and steady that wins the race. As Simon said Tuesday night, America loves an underdog story, and even after being vocally lapped by Crystal on Tuesday, and for much of the season, the win went to the humble paint-store clerk — and nobody seemed more surprised by the outcome than Lee himself.

What did you think about Wednesday night's finale? What was the highlight? Did Lee deserve to win? Leave your comments below!

Sandra Bullock To Receive Generation Award At MTV Movie Awards

Actress will be on hand to accept the honor at the show, airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

An Oscar. A Golden Globe. Almost $700 million in worldwide box-office sales. From "The Blind Side" to "The Proposal," Sandra Bullock has had one heck of an amazing year on the big screen — a richly deserved payoff after a more than two-decade-long career in Hollywood. That's why at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, we're bestowing MTV's highest honor, the Generation Award, to Bullock, who will be on hand during the show to accept the honor.

And, of course, we just kinda love her. How can you not? She's played sweethearts and badasses, damaged and righteous women, goofy gals and damsels in distress. She's shared the screen with Sylvester Stallone, Keanu Reeves, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Ben Affleck and Ryan Reynolds. She can pop off LOL-inducing one-liners in one movie and execute a sucker-punch to your soul in another. She's already won four MTV Movie Awards.

For all these reasons and more, Bullock is this year's MTV Generation Award honoree. Past recipients include Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey, but this is the first time a woman has ever been honored.

"Sandra is one of those rare individuals who is adored by our audience as both an actress and a role model," said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV. "Recognizing her remarkable talent, amazing range of films and her visceral connection to our audience around the globe, we are honored to present her with our MTV Generation Award."

It's set to be a big evening for Bullock, as both "Blind Side" and "Proposal" are up for awards. LOS ANGELES — According to Bret Michaels, his surprise performance Wednesday night (May 26) on the "American Idol" season finale was much-needed musical therapy.

Anticipation built quickly in the audience when the familiar guitar chords of one of Michaels' biggest hits with his group Poison, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," began and he later emerged on stage with top-three finalist Casey James.

"I needed to be here and do this because it's been two months since I played," the rocker said backstage at the Nokia Theatre shortly after his performance. "It's been a month and a half in the hospital. It was such an amazing feeling to come out here and jam with Casey. I didn't tell [my doctors] I was going to do this. I just told them I was doing the 'Celebrity Apprentice' finale. They're going to find out in a minute. But I feel great, I gotta be honest. There's still a lot of pain I'm still experiencing. [But] except for a little hitch ... my left side from the ... stroke, I feel amazing."

Last month the singer and reality show star was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week because of a "warning stroke." On Sunday he appeared on the "Celebrity Apprentice" finale and was named the victor, and he says that he's ready to hit the road again.

"I can't believe my family let me out. I may not have told them either; I left a few things out," he joked. "But I needed this for my soul. Honestly. It was a great experience."

He said that he plans to perform again as soon as Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi.

"[I'm going to] do a few shows at a time. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, I'll start again," he said.

Michaels also reflected on lessons he learned while hospitalized. "I've always tried to treat people with respect and I've always tried to treat people great. I enjoy every day — every minute I'm here is awesome."

Michaels joked that he wasn't exactly sure what he would be doing, now that he's won the title of "Celebrity Apprentice." He also said that he initially didn't know if he was hired or fired by Donald Trump.

"I leaned in and said, 'Did you say hired or fired?' I didn't know what he said. I just jumped up. I thought, 'Trump, you're not going to fire me right now. I'm on medication. I flew a long way. Holly is amazing. She's a fierce competitor,' " he said of his co-finalist, Holly Robinson Peete. "I didn't ask Trump 'What does being "Celebrity Apprentice" entail? Do you get paid? Is there cash involved?' But what do you gotta do for him? Hopefully, you get to do a lot of charity fundraising. If that's what it is, I'm going to love it."

And as for that hospital stay?

"I've spent the last month and a half in the hospital. I don't ever want to see a hospital again," he said. "I just want to go out and have a great time."
