Fire Starter: Bound To Blow

Kevin Cossom is the man, and you probably don't even know it yet. The 24-year-old has been penning hooks for a while, including R. Kelly's choruses on Young Jeezy's "Go Getta," Beanie Sigel's "All of the Above" and Rick Ross' "Speedin'."

Cossom — who has also written hooks for Akon ("One") and T-Pain ("Cash Flow") — is enjoying his greatest accomplishment as a writer on Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down."

"It's an honor, man," Cossom said in between working on vocals for new Def Jam signee Adrienne Bailon in a New York studio. "My first placement was 'Go Getta.' When that happened, it was crazy, because Kelly is one of the, if not the, most influential writers in R&B of my era coming up. It's an honor for him to sing something I wrote knowing he could have written something as well. It also gave me a new level of confidence. If people I look up to in the game — such as Akon, T-Pain, Robin Thicke — like it, I'm going to be OK."

The Orlando-by-way-of-Philadelphia writer said Danja sent Polow Da Don the vocals for "Knock You Down." The record was originally made for a dude, but Polow felt the song was perfect for Ms. Keri.

"I didn't hear anything about the record for a couple of months, and Danja came and was like, 'Keri cut the record,' " Cossom recalled. "I was like, 'OK, all right.' I wanted to hear it. By the time I got a chance to hear it, Ne-Yo had gotten on it. I felt it could be a major record. After that, Kanye jumped on it. It wasn't in the plan; it just happened. I don't think anybody imagined that would happen. I got my first #1 record — #1 Urban, #3 Hot 100."

With his lyrical skill established behind the scenes, Cossom is ready to step into the light by embarking on a recording career of his own. He's signed to Danja's imprint N.A.R.S. (New Age Rock Stars)/ Jive Records. He had a major alley-oop on Rick Ross' "Usual Suspects." The Bawse gave him a chance to sing his own hook.

"That's definitely the family, man," he said about working with Ross and DJ Khaled. "But I haven't got a chance to get in the studio yet with Ross and collaborate with him. It'll be me and the producers. Like the 'Usual Suspects' joint, when they told me Ross was working on his album, Khaled, the Runners and the Inkredibles all sent me tracks, and I did the 'Usual Suspects' joint. I was in Orlando when I did it. I never worked directly with him, but I did meet him.

"A few of the records, [Ross] hit me up to say, 'I'm feeling this' or 'I need something with this vibe.' He's definitely a cool cat, real laid-back. He understood I was making the transition from writer to artist, so he gave me the opportunity to stay on 'Usual Suspects.' "

Last year, Cossom dropped his mixtape Pre Album and hopes to put the real album out this year. He's playing with a few different ideas for the title.

"The album is basically relationships — being in them, being out of them, men cheating, women cheating, what everybody goes through," Cossom explained. "Trying to sum that up in an album title and this being my first album is kinda tough. I don't want to name it the wrong thing and be boring, like make it self-titled. The first single we're gonna push is this joint called 'Relax.' Within the next few weeks, we're gonna go hard. It's a crazy record, a club joint. We've been working on this album for a while, but behind my schedule and Danja's schedule, sometimes it was hard to lock out time. I've been in L.A. since January trying to get it done, and I'm close to getting it done now."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Rick Ross is working on album number four, and the title is Teflon Don. The Bawse told us exclusively in Atlanta during the Birthday Bash concert that it's only right he reflect on his bulletproof success on his next project.

"You gotta understand, I feel like I overcame so many things," Ross said before he got onstage for the show. "Not only in music, but in my everyday life — being a young black man, being an entrepreneur, being a father. I learned a lot of things. I'm turning right around, putting it back into music. It's still a lot of things I deal with. Still a lot of negativity. That's what it is, and that's why I feel the title of my next studio album is so appropriate."

Ross said we'll get the CCC (Carol City Cartel) album Custom Cars and Cycles before his solo record. The collective just put out a remix video for "Yacht Club," and the official single is coming in July. Deeper Than Rap is far from done, though. The next official single is slated to be "Maybach Music 2," and a video will be ready as soon as he can get T-Pain, Kanye West and Lil Wayne's schedules to line up.

'New' Chris Brown Songs Are Actually Old Demos, Label Says

Songs, including 'Not My Fault' and 'Smash,' 'are being falsely promoted as new material from Chris,' rep says.

Late last month, Chris Brown posted a video online in which he said he's working on a new album called Graffiti and planned to release a new single this summer — however, music is popping up sooner than he intended. Over the past few weeks, several Brown songs have been circulating on the Internet and late Tuesday night, his record company released a statement saying that the songs are not legitimate releases.

"Countering misleading reports of 'new' Chris Brown music: there are no 'new' songs from Chris Brown currently being promoted by Chris or his record label," a representative for Jive Records said in a statement. "There are several old demos circulating that are being falsely promoted as new material from Chris."

Two of the songs in question — "Not My Fault" and "Smash" — have been tagged with unfortunate titles, given Brown's recent legal issues stemming from his alleged altercation with Rihanna. On Monday, Brown was sentenced to 180 days of community service and five years' probation.

"Not My Fault" is an uptempo number that sounds like it could have been produced by the Neptunes — it even sounds like Pharrell Williams doing some ad-libs as the song ends. The record is about a young lady who falls to pieces after Brown shuns her. The woman in the song is so hurt that Brown sings about her mother calling him and saying her daughter won't eat or sleep.

"Shorty is caught up, from a long night," Brown sings. "She's ready to fall, but see, it's all right ... That's not my fault, right?"

On "Smash," Brown is in full robotics mode and utilizes Auto-Tune, which Jay-Z slammed in his new track, "D.O.A." "Guess who stepped in the room?" Brown sings on "Smash." "It's your Breezy, hit her with the Auto-Tune ... I'm the kinda guy who don't wanna follow rules, so come on baby girl, let's break a few." He also asks the girl he's singing to if she wants to play with fire before telling her he knows her agenda. She doesn't want his number, picture or autograph — she wants to "smash." The song is obviously unfinished, as there's no second verse.

"Uh Oh" is more of a dance record and finds Brown crooning, "There goes another one, shorty wanna rock with me ... Shorty dip it low for me/ Let's take it to the floor, show me what you got for me."

And finally, a song called "Stronger" is a Mary J. Blige ballad that features Brown singing backing vocals. On it, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul sings, "I will survive as long as it's you by my side/ I'm stronger." A rep for Blige said the song was recorded before Brown's incident with Rihanna in February; the rep said she was uncertain when and where the song would be released.

At press time, Brown's next LP had no official release date.

Jay Sean Taking On The U.S. With 'Down,' Featuring Lil Wayne

MIAMI — "Right here, you got my man Jay Sean, the new edition of Cash Money Records!" Lil Wayne proclaims as he and Sean stride across an enormous green-screen on the set of the video for "Down." The song — which features Wayne — is the British pop/R&B artist's debut U.S. single, and it's also an important stylistic step forward for the Cash Money label.

"Everybody is used to what Cash Money is, and that's why he has a new sound," Wayne said. "It's for the ladies. We're used to getting in your face ... and now we are getting more mature here."

Whatever the case, it's working: The song is already making strong inroads at U.S. radio and the video is set to premiere any day. Cash Money already stepped outside of the hip-hop realm with rocker Kevin Rudolf (who also appears on Sean's forthcoming album), and Jay Sean brings a whole new dimension to its roster.

Indeed, the British-Indian singer — who hails from the London borough of Hounslow — is an unlikely match for the label, but his accomplishments speak for themselves. With two albums under his belt, he is a hot-selling artist in Europe and India. In his seven-year career, Sean has blended his R&B style with Punjabi singers and even reggaetón (courtesy of producers Luney Tunez) before going independent with his 2008 album release, the fittingly titled My Own Way.

And so Jay Sean begins his American campaign: "Down" has hit radio, as has Birdman's "Written on Her," which features Sean. The video for "Down" drops this week, and Sean begins a West Coast promotional tour toward the end of July. His U.S. release, expected in October of this year, will also be titled My Own Way, but will have a whole new set of songs and of course, a couple of Cash Money family features. But even an artist who plays to crowds of more than 50,000 people in Europe and Asia is a surprise signing for Cash Money.

"A producer friend told me that [Cash Money Co-CEO Ronald 'Slim' Williams] is really into your project, loves the fact that you did it independently," Sean told MTV News. "They understand all about that because that's how they started. They just really want to take you to the next level and bring you to America."

Linkin Park Moving On From Style Of 'Transformers' Track

'Over the next year or so, you're going to get a lot of different LP music,' Mike Shinoda says.
By James Montgomery

Say what you will about "New Divide," the brand-new Linkin Park track featured in the upcoming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," but you can't accuse the guys of departing from their time-tested formula.

The big, rocket-launcher guitars, the electronic fireworks, the vocal gymnastics — it's very much classic Linkin Park, the kind of tune that's helped move millions of albums and pack arenas around the globe. And if you're an LP fan, you should probably savor it, because from the sound of things, Linkin Park might be leaving songs like "Divide" behind for good.

"We've got this song for 'Transformers,' and then sometime soon after this, Chester's going to be releasing a solo record called Dead by Sunrise, and that will be out towards the end of this year," Linkin Park MC Mike Shinoda said. "And then early next year there's going to be another Linkin Park record too. We've been writing a lot and all the stuff we've been experiencing and stuff we've seen — that stuff is all going into the songs. Over the next year or so, you're going to get a lot of different LP music, and I think you're going to get a lot of takes on everything that's been going on."

And that "different" music starts with Bennington's Sunrise, a long-in-the-works project that the singer says will finally see the light of day in September. And in keeping with what Shinoda was saying, Bennington is warning Linkin Park fans to prepare to be shocked by what they'll hear. Oh, and to fire up their black lights too.

"There's a stylistic thing that's different. With Linkin Park, we have a signature sound — you know it when you hear us. [Dead by Sunrise] does not have that feel. It has a completely different feel. Trying to describe that difference is like trying to describe the difference between Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, you know?" he said. "They're both rock, but they're different styles. I'm confident in saying this next record is going to be the most challenging ... and complex and intriguing music that has come out of the Linkin Park camp. It's really dark. It's like post-apocalyptic 'Blade Runner' meets LSD."

"I have to say, I'm really proud of Chester — he has his own style. ... You know how they say you can turn on Pink Floyd and 'The Wizard of Oz' and they go together?" Shinoda added. "You'll want to put this record on with 'Blade Runner' and 'Tron.' "

"Or 'Blade Runner' and 'Tron' and 'A Clockwork Orange,' all at the same time," Bennington laughed.

And then there's the matter of Linkin Park's new album, the follow-up to their ultra-successful 2007 epic Minutes to Midnight. Already described by Bennington as being a semi-conceptual piece, it now sounds as if the band is pushing the boundaries even further.

"With working on Minutes to Midnight, we really broke out of our shell — we really discovered that we can lose our minds in our music, and we're going to keep going with that for this new one," Bennington said. "We're all creative in a lot of different ways. If you have more than one thing you're good at, or you have more than one style of doing one thing in particular, it helps keep the creativity fresh and new and keeps things rolling in a positive direction. If I was Bob Ross and I painted a forest scene every day, I'd get really good at painting a forest scene, but I don't know if I'd be very good at doing anything else."

Demi Lovato has done a pretty good job, in her very young career, of keeping her name out of the gossip pages. But recently, rumors began to circulate that 16-year-old Lovato was dating Miley Cyrus' 20-year-old brother Trace, of Metro Station.

Although she attempted to clear up the rumor on her Twitter page, we wanted to get the lowdown straight from Lovato herself.

"I'm single! Yeah, I'm definitely single," she told MTV News. When asked who she would love to date, she left the answer open: "I can't say!

With that rumor cleared up, we wanted to see what other kinds of crazy stuff Lovato might have read about herself online. She admitted that she doesn't know what people have to say about her, because she doesn't read that stuff to begin with.

"I try not to listen to rumors," she said. "Rumors are stupid. They're not true. I mean, of course you get stuff like that all the time. You read it online, and you're just like, 'Why did they even make that up?' But, I mean, I don't really remember them, 'cause they're not important to me."

But there is one person she wishes people would stop writing about: her little sister and "Desperate Housewives" actress 7-year-old Madison De La Garza. "She's great. She's a beautiful little girl, and she asks me for advice sometimes," she said. "She's gotten her little taste of haters online and things like that, and just teaching her how to deal with it has actually gotten us closer."

Following an alleged altercation with the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and the band's manager, gossip blogger Perez Hilton has released several written statements, a video response and streams of Twitter posts. Now he's getting set to sue, according to a report from "Access Hollywood."

"All persons responsible for this cowardly act of physical violence will be sued and held legally responsible for their actions," Hilton's attorney, Bryan J. Freedman, said in a statement. "His First Amendment rights will not be infringed upon through fear, intimidation or violence."

Hilton was said to suffer a cut beneath his eye during an altercation between the blogger and Peas manager Liborio "Polo" Molina early Monday morning in Toronto. Hilton directed an anti-gay slur at Will in the course of the incident.

"Perez will take legal action against anyone who chooses to resort to physical violence as a means to respond to criticism they do not like," the statement continued.

Freedman also stated that they "are conducting a legal investigation as to whether Will.I.Am encouraged and/or instructed Molina to engage in this physical assault."

Toronto Police have charged Molina, 36, with assault. He must return to Toronto's Old City Hall Courthouse on August 5 to answer to the charge.

Aubrey O'Day's absence on the last season of "Making the Band" left her fans wondering when they'd see her on TV next. Well, the former Danity Kane member is gearing up for her very own show. Although details such as title and network can't be revealed by O'Day just yet, she does promise that it should air sometime this year.

"I'm about to take a huge star's position in a Vegas show that just opened," she told MTV News at the "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" premiere. "And coming with me will be reality-show cameras, of course ... I'm starting to film my reality show, hopefully coming out in October."

The show, which she has described as a "docu-soap about me taking the stage again and of my own life," will follow O'Day as she hits the stage in Vegas. "The [Vegas] show is a musical," the former "Hairspray" star said. "And a man that choreographed 'Hairspray' when I was on Broadway, Jerry Mitchell — he's produced this musical."

She didn't specify which musical, but did say, "I have big shoes to fill. There's been an amazing cast so far and the show's beautiful and I'm really excited. It's something new that I haven't done before."

In April, there were rumors that O'Day would be taking over the "Shot at Love" dating-show franchise, but she was quick to dismiss them. "I didn't feel it was the right fit for me, 'cause I'm an artist first," she said. "Although I have fun at events and stuff, it's not really at all who I am as an artist."

Perez Hilton Vs. Will.I.Am: A Timeline

Here's an organized account of the Twitters, videos and lawyer statements coming out of Monday's alleged altercation.
By James Montgomery

It's the biggest pop-culture blowout of the summer: the alleged assault of Perez Hilton by Black Eyed Peas manager Liborio "Polo" Molina in Toronto on Monday morning, and the resulting war of words that has erupted between the celebrity blogger and BEP rapper Will.I.Am.

It began with some frantic, early-morning tweets and has grown to encompass multiple response videos, grainy camera-phone footage, the Toronto Police Service, GLAAD, TMZ, "Access Hollywood," every celebrity's Twitter page and finally, some litigious threats from personal attorneys.

To be honest, the events of the past few days happened so fast that even MTV News was getting confused (was Perez's response video a response to Will's response video, or vice versa?), which is why we've created the following timeline with a minute-by-minute account of the whole incident, from the first terrified tweet to the last legal brief.

Monday, 2:34 a.m. ET: Hours after attending Canada's MuchMusic Awards, Perez Hilton takes to his Twitter account, writing, "I'm in shock. I need the police ASAP. Please come to the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel now. Please ... I was assaulted by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke."

3:47 a.m.: Will.I.Am creates a Twitter account, specifically to deny Hilton's claims. "It isn't cool for someone to blame you and blast you with lies," he writes. "Perez Hilton is a liar."

5:10 a.m.: Will posts a video message on his Dipdive page, denying that he had anything to do with Hilton's assault. He instead speculates that a fan attacked Hilton, after Hilton called Will "a f----t" outside Toronto's Cobra nightclub. Will also says that while the alleged assault was taking place, he was "minding [his] own business waiting for a car and whatnot."

10:18 a.m.: Hilton fires back at Will.I.Am with an emotional, 12-minute video rant, in which he accuses the Black Eyed Peas' manager, Liborio "Polo" Molina, of assaulting him, and calls Will "a f---ing liar" for suggesting that a fan assaulted him. "Will.I.Am is a coward and a disgusting human being for lying," he says. "I'm making this video because I want to make it clear that I would never make up something like this."

Monday afternoon: A second Will.I.Am video begins making the rounds, in which Will once again denies Hilton's claims, and says that the fact that Hilton tweeted about the incident proves that he was looking for attention. "Dude, apparently, you were bleeding outside the club ... and instead of calling the police, you [tweeted] that I assaulted you," Will says. "Sounds like somebody wants mad attention and is not really concerned with his health."

2:15 p.m.: Footage of the altercation appears on TMZ. Though blurry, it shows Hilton shouting an anti-gay slur at two men, whom the Web site identified as Will.I.Am and Molina, while security guards and partygoers look on. Moments later, a scuffle breaks out, and someone can clearly be heard shouting, "You just assaulted Perez Hilton!"

Monday afternoon: Molina turns himself in to Toronto Police in connection with the alleged assault.

9:00 p.m.: The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation releases a statement to TMZ, chastising Hilton for using an anti-gay slur when taunting Will.I.Am, and urging him to apologize for his actions. "For someone in our own community to use [the slur] to attack another person ... is incredibly dangerous," GLAAD's statement reads. "It legitimizes use of a slur that is often linked to violence against our community. And it sends a message that it is OK to dehumanize people by exploiting anti-gay attitudes."

Tuesday, 8:04 a.m.: Hilton responds to GLAAD's statement with one of his own, telling TMZ that he is "saddened GLAAD chose to victimize me further by criticizing me for how I non-violently dealt with a very scary situation." He also says that he has no plans to apologize for using the slur, and that GLAAD should really be apologizing to him.

2:23 p.m.: Toronto Police formally charge Molina with assault. He is due back at the Old City Hall courthouse on August 5 to answer to the charge. If prosecutors choose to charge him with an "indictable offence," Molina could face up to five years in prison, or, if they opt for a lesser "summary offence," he could serve 18 months.

8:41 p.m.: Hilton posts a statement on his own Web site, calling his use of the anti-gay slur "misguided," but continued to defend his right to employ such language if he feels threatened. "I was in an out-of-the-ordinary situation and used a word that I would not utter under normal circumstances," the statement reads. "My intention — however misguided it may have been — was to stand up for myself and tell this belligerent man that I had enough of his badgering and was not going to continue to let him berate and intimidate me."

Wednesday (June 24), 11:34 a.m.: Hilton's attorney says his client is planning legal action over his assault. "All persons responsible for this cowardly act of physical violence will be sued and held legally responsible for their actions," Bryan J. Freedman said in a statement. "His First Amendment rights will not be infringed upon through fear, intimidation or violence."

1:34 p.m.: GLAAD issues a statement saying that while Hilton took the right step in acknowledging that "words can hurt," he still needs to "take this opportunity to reflect on his use of demeaning and defamatory language against many different communities on PerezHilton.com."

The Black Eyed Peas' manager is due in court August 5 to answer to the assault charge, so stick with MTV News for all updates on the situation between now and then.
