Celebrity Favorites

Cam'ron is getting to the money and apparently has no time for holding grudges. When Killa is cruising, he's not having flashbacks of old beefs. Despite past musical feuds with Nas and Jay-Z, the Harlem Diplomat says that he keeps their music in rotation. A classic is a classic.

"To be honest, I've been listening to a variety of stuff," Cam told us a few weeks ago, when asked whose music he enjoys these days. "The last album I bought was Plies' album. I like Plies a lot. Basically, being in Florida, you feel him even more when you're in that atmosphere. [Lil] Wayne is my man. I got stuff like Jay-Z's first album, Reasonable Doubt, [Nas'] infamous Illmatic, stuff that makes me think. [A lot of] new albums are like, 'Eh, whatever.' But I got a lot of '97, '98 stuff in my car, '96. Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. ... I always listen to DeBarge. DeBarge is always in the loop. John Legend. Beyoncé's new CD is in there. I do a lot of mixtape R&B stuff. I even got the Force M.D.s."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

From the South to the North and everywhere in between, OJ Da Juiceman is getting love from his fellow hip-hop dignitaries. Jadakiss has him featured on "Who's Real," R. Kelly has him on the underground record "Superman High," and there are plenty more collaborations in the works.

"I did a song with Saigon; it's called 'What Would You Do for Pu---," he said. "I'mma have this record with Cassidy. I got in the 'Hustler's Anthem' remix with Busta Rhymes and T-Pain. I got in touch with Grafh — he said he wants to do something. [Tony] Yayo got on the remix to 'Make the Trap Say Aye'; it's a bunch of people. I'm working with everybody that extended their hand out. Me and Ron Browz about to do something. I did song with D-Block that's a real record."

And in addition to all that, Da Juice is currently working on a follow-up to the project he released earlier this year The Otha Side of the Trap.

Kanye West Says He's The Michael Jordan Of Rapping

'I'm about to take it to a whole 'nother level,' West promises of forthcoming rap LP.

Kanye West is back in the lab, and there's only word to describe his new rhymes: "awes-mazing" (we're guessing that's a cross between awesome and amazing?).

"I kill that rap sh--, that's what I do," he said of his upcoming opus. "Lyrics right now, they're awes-mazing. They're basically untouchable. I'm about to take it to a whole 'nother level. I'd be scared if I was not me."

Kanye said he's always making an album, because he comes up with lyrics just by having conversations with people. He still doesn't write his rhymes down and hasn't in six years. The composing process is obviously working out for him.

"As far as rapping goes, how can I say this? Jordan, Michael Jackson — it's what I do," West told us recently comparing his greatness on the mic to what the Mikes do in their respective arenas. "It's time for me to bust another rap album."

It's the good life for 'Ye. He has his book "Thank You and You're Welcome" going to stores July 14, and Mr. West even gets a chance to party with Madonna occasionally. A racy picture popped up on the Net of Kanye sandwiched between Madge and girlfriend Amber Rose. The rumor mill went into overdrive, and Kanye quickly killed the chit-chat that he and Rose were involved in anything sexual with the pop icon.

He reiterated that sentiment to MTV News. "Madonna's a cool girl," he said of the woman he collaborated with last year. "We were just partying, drinking, having a good time. It's interesting people would make such a big deal out of photographs. I'm happy they make a big deal out of it. It's better for me."

R. Kelly Explains Why He Went Untitled For Next Album

Kells wants fans to 'name it themselves based on what they feel listening to the music.'
By Shaheem Reid

If you buy an album, you can call it whatever you want — at least R. Kelly thinks so. In February, Kelly partied in Atlanta club the Velvet Room with Jazze Pha, DJ Infamous and others and told the crowd that his new album didn't have a name.

"ATL, what's up? I got my little brother right here, Jazze Pha," he said, standing in the VIP balcony. "I'm out here working on the mutha----in' album. I'm working on a new album, and I'm calling that mutha----a Untitled. Y'all call it what y'all want."

On Monday, the Pied Piper of R&B told MTV News why he decided to go the Nas route when titling his LP.

"I've been in the biz 17 years, so everyone is used to me naming my records," he said. "So I wanted to mix it up a little. I want whoever listens to the record to call it what they want, name it themselves based on what they feel listening to the music."

This week, Kelly drops his first-ever mixtape, The Demo Tape. "I took it all the way back to when I first started; all I had was my demo," he said of the street project. "It's a way to start fresh, be humble. It's like being a new artist. This is my demo tape for my fans."

Kelly worked with DJ Drama and DJ Skee on the project, which combines Kelly's remixes, previously unreleased joints and new cuts from the forthcoming album.

"He had reached out awhile ago for the mixtape," Drama said of Kelly's tape. "So I know it's been on his mind. I think it finally just came together for him. It's a song on there called 'Bangin' the Head Board.' Problem! He redid Dream's 'Kelly's 12 Play.' Ridiculous. He gave some exclusives from the album — it's some heat on there. Somebody that big doing a mixtape is dope. It's keeping the game alive. It's necessary."

Drama said he expects Kells to shoot videos for at least a couple of the tracks on the mixtape. "We're trying to go all the way," the man behind the Gangsta Grillz mixtape series revealed. "It would be better to take advantage of all forums at the moment."

LOS ANGELES — If you want to blow it out for the debut of "DJ Hero," there's no bigger than Jay-Z and Eminem. The iconic MCs shared the mic at the Wiltern on Monday night, in a rare joint appearance to celebrate the launch of the new game in front of a celebrity-studded audience that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Pete Wentz, Tyrese and Blink-182's Mark Hoppus.

The packed crowd was treated to a thrilling set from Jay that included some of his biggest hits. His performance concluded with a surprise appearance from Slim Shady himself — fresh from his run-in with Brüno at the MTV Movie Awards — who grabbed the mic and traded verses with Jay on "Renegade" before taking over the stage for his own mini-set.

The night kicked off with a set from TRVS/DJAM, which found Blink drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM chopping it up in their unique style, hopping from Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" through Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison," Michael Jackson's "Rock With You," Metallica's "Enter Sandman," the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

The duo were joined by West Coast hip-hip royalty Warren G for a spin through "Regulate" before the house band took over for a bit of "Guitar Hero" action.

It wasn't a long wait, though, as Jigga soon hit the stage with a live band — the Roc Boys — and slammed the crowd with "U Don't Know," sending the room into a frenzy as he quickly followed up with a barrage of hits including "99 Problems," "Can I Live" "Jigga What," "Public Service Announcement" and his verse from "Swagga Like Us."

The set raged on with spins through "Blue Magic," his "My President" remix, "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," his "A Billi" freestyle over Lil Wayne's "A Milli" and a rock remix of "Encore." And just when it seemed the set was over, Jay came back out, admitting that he "forgot something," and asked the audience if he could do one more.

The "Renegade" beat dropped, and as he began his verse, the room went crazy. Out sauntered Eminem to perform the song, which he produced for Jay's The Blueprint album, onstage with Jay for the first time in years. Then it was Slim Shady's turn to take over, as he rolled out his latest single, the gory "3 A.M.," which went into a trio of other new songs from his recently released #1 comeback album, Relapse: "Underground," "We Made You" and "Crack a Bottle." The set closed with Em's classic "Lose Yourself." Though all the chatter on Monday was about the MC's encounter with a certain Austrian fashion reporter the night before, the dis-happy rapper didn't mention Brüno once from the stage, focusing instead on delivering a knock-out performance.

Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Quit 'I'm A Celebrity'

Posted: 02 Jun 2009 06:32 AM PDT

'Hills' stars are 'too rich and too famous' to stay on show.
By Jocelyn Vena

At the beginning of Tuesday night's "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!," host Damien Fahey announced that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt would be sitting out the episode, after media reports surfaced that the pair known as Speidi had quit the show (although rumors emerged just hours later that they were trying to get back on the show).

Speidi can be seen on the show, during taped segments in which contestants hang out in a basin of water and bugs known as the "trauma tank," but the pair decided not to participate in the challenge that was eventually won by the guys' team, thanks to former "American Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar.

The pair were later seen talking with fellow contestant Stephen Baldwin, sharing religious views. (Spencer told him that Heidi said God will answer his prayers — as evidenced by the time that he prayed to hang out with Miley Cyrus and it actually happened!)

The duo had to compete against each other to win food for their team. Their challenge? To find as many star cut-outs as possible in the snake- and rat-filled chamber. "I'm about to go on a competition against my wife, and I'm going to beat her, even though she is my wife," Spencer said. Heidi, knowing her husband so well, added that he'd throw her off a cliff to win.

Pratt managed to wrangle up two stars while Heidi only got one, making him the winner of a meal for his team. "I, of course, won because what I do, I win at," he said. "Not even Spencer Pratt knows what he's going to do — where I think I might quit, I might end up staying and winning the whole thing."

Calling the trial his "goodbye trial," he announced to the group that "he's too rich and too famous" to stay in the jungle, before getting into an argument with Janice Dickinson about religion and getting baptized by Stephen Baldwin in the nearby river. "I feel like I just took a 10-year bath," he said afterward.

When Speidi announced their departure, Sanjaya asserted that he wasn't sure what that meant for their future, since he thought they could come back at any time. However, they did in fact leave, saying they're "the most famous people in the world" and would rather head back to "The Hills" than stay in the woods.

The remaining team members placed bets that the couple would come back for more, though the live shot showed an empty Camp Speidi. Voting was then opened to the public to decide who would be the next to leave the Costa Rican jungle.

Cobra Starship: The Dumbest Geniuses On The Internet

Band's CobraCam has turned messing around online into an art form, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

For nine weeks now, I've been meaning to write this column, but I kept getting distracted by stuff like the Keyboard Cat and Pretty Ricky's latest round of furniture-humping histrionics. And that's somewhat fitting, given that this column is about Cobra Starship, a band that has turned messing around on the Internet into an absolute art form.

And I'm not saying that to be dismissive of their success or because hyperkinetic party machine/ frontman Gabe Saporta sort of dresses like a blog, but rather, because, well ... it's true. Cobra Starship are a musical meme, the band equivalent of every groin shot, epic fail and outrageous bit of bodily harm you've ever watched YouTube or e-mailed to a million co-workers. Theirs is a brilliance reserved for the zeitgeist-grabbing Tay Zondays or Chris Crockers of the world. It's stupid smart. Genius dumb. And this is something to be proud of.

Witness CobraCam.tv, an episodic site they launched nine weeks ago to promote their upcoming Hot Mess album (due August 11). This is a very clinical description of it, however, as it is "promotional" only inasmuch as it features the members of Cobra Starship. More correctly, it's a sort of sketch-comedy showcase/ pop-culture blender/ "WTF is going on?" bonanza. It's the kind of thing a million bands (and a billion kids on YouTube) try to do but always fail miserably at, because they are simply not funny — or stupid or clever or dedicated — enough to pull it off. Cobra Starship are all those things, and then some.

Over the course of nine sublimely silly installments, they've spilled gallons of blood, poked fun at Lil Wayne's prodigious face tattoos, grown fake beards, harassed their merch guy, assaulted steaks with axes, attempted to grow breasts (keytarist Vicky Asher won that one by default), hawked cleaning products and cologne, performed surgery, rode a jackalope and wore more costumes than Lady Gaga. They've poked fun at the industry, British people, their fellow bands and, most importantly, themselves. None of it makes very much sense, and lord knows how we're supposed to be gleaning any information about Hot Mess, but none of that matters. Because it's all hilarious. And because, well, it's Cobra Starship. The music is almost secondary.

And if that last line comes off as harsh, well, I'd be willing to bet the guys (and gal) in CS would agree with me. With Cobra, the comedy is the thing. And that's more than evident on CobraCam.

There's a deft comic touch on display here — truly some of the funniest moments come in the throwaway lines or the odd cutaway shot — and a fondness for the bizarre that recalls stuff like "The Kids in the Hall" or the British version of "The Office" (or even, to blaspheme a bit more, "Monty Python's Flying Circus"). There are smart, subtle references to stuff like "The Big Lebowski" and Vince Offer and "St. Elsewhere" and Wes Anderson's slo-mo tracking shots (there's even a nod to "Goodfellas" in episode six, though I'm not sure the band even realizes it). And, of course, a collegiate dedication to getting wasted: Cobra Starship are, at the end of a day, a party band.

But here's another one to throw at you: Cobra Starship are also a comedy troupe. Each member has a role (Saporta is the boozing lout, Asher the silent straight-woman, etc.), and as is the case with all great troupes, there is one breakout star. In Cobra's case, it's guitarist Ryland Blackington, a gangly, rubber-faced combination of "SNL"-era Chevy Chase and "Kids in the Hall"-era Kevin McDonald who positively carries the majority of the CobraCam stuff (check episodes two, six and nine for proof). Of course, bassist Alex Suarez and drummer Nate Novarro are pretty good too. Say what you will about Cobra Starship, but they definitely have the funniest rhythm section in the business.

And that's sort of the point of all this, I suppose. As a band, Cobra Starship are a really great sketch-comedy troupe, and CobraCam is the proof. Their dedication — and, make no bones about it, to keep churning out episodes of quality stuff takes dedication — to the stupid, the insane and the subtle is what sets them apart from their contemporaries, and it's all on display here. I'm not sure how any of this will help Hot Mess (do "funny" bands sell records? We Are Scientists sure didn't), though that probably doesn't matter. Love them or hate them, CS have always been fun-first, music-second, and that's why kids pack their shows and throw the fangs in the air. In fact, it's a sort of brilliant niche they've carved out, if you think about it. They've quietly become the court jesters of pop music. More proof that you've got to be pretty smart to be this stupid.

Drake Working On Rihanna's New LP, Denies Romance Rumors (Again)

The industry doesn't just want guest verses from Drake, they want a piece of his pen game. A clip of an interview with that the hot-but-still-unsigned MC did recently in London was recently posted on DJ Semtex's Web site. Drizzy was in the U.K. working with Rihanna on her new album.

"I'm actually writing for Rihanna right now," he told DJ Semtex. The Toronto native went on to reveal what should already be obvious: Life is pretty good for him these days.

"I guess I'm living a dream," he said about his success thus far. "I enjoy a challenge. I've never in my mind felt like, 'Oh, I could probably write something crazy for Rihanna.' That wasn't my first thought. But being put up to the task, we're coming up with some special stuff. It's crazy, man. All I could do is smile. It's nice."

When Semtex asked if he and Rihanna had anything going on besides work, Drake once again played if off with light laughter.

"Out here? Yeah, it's just work. Me and Rihanna are just me and Rihanna. We're cool and she's great, man. She's a great person, definitely."

"Whatever," Drake continued with a chuckle when asked about the rumors that the two of them were spied kissing at a New York bowling alley. Late last month, the New York Post published an item in its gossip column claiming that Drake and Rihanna were spied kissing all night at Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge bowling alley. One of the paper's spies was quoted as saying, "She was drinking whiskey and apple juice and making out with him all night. ... They were really cute together."

"We're young, having fun and enjoying life. That's all," he said of the rumors.

In addition to being arguably the hottest unsigned artist out there right now, Drake played a high profile show in New York last week in front of an audience that featured heavyweights like Kanye West, Bun B, Talib Kweli, Ryan Leslie, Eminem tour DJ/producer Alchemist and executives from multiple record companies.

Adam Lambert Hits The Town In Hollywood

There was a time, not too long ago, when "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert could go out for a night on the town in Hollywood and blend in with the rest of the guyliner-wearing set. But not anymore.

Since coming in second to winner Kris Allen and emerging from the hermetic "Idol" bubble, Lambert is suddenly paparazzi bait, and one of the biggest bounties town is a photo of the 27-year-old singer on an apparent date.

As he's coyly kept (some of) the public wondering about his sexuality, which he's teased he might discuss in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone magazine, UsMagazine.com reported on Tuesday (June 2) that Lambert was seen holding hands and being "very flirtatious" with interior designer Drake LaBry on Monday night at West Hollywood hotspot Guys & Dolls.

The photos of Lambert and LaBry holding hands as they left the club lit up the Internet on Tuesday, and one unnamed onlooker told the magazine that the pair were "dancing very closely together, very flirtatious inside" as they sipped on vodka drinks. Apparently they weren't alone in their PDA, as actor Ryan Phillippe and girlfriend actress Abbie Cornish were also reportedly smooching in a booth near Lambert and LaBry.

Another anonymous gawker told the magazine, "It was cute to see two couples — one gay and one straight — acting the same and nobody caring!"

Though Lambert has long resisted discussing his sexuality, "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi recently said on "The View" that she thought the singer was "always openly out."
