MIAMIDJ Khaled is used to getting it done at all costs. "It" being everything: marketing, promoting, A&R, producing, managing, cutting checks, DJing, supervising albums and, on this night, being a tour guide.

"Welcome to We the Best Studios, the house of hits — the house of vibes," Khaled said, welcoming us to Miami. Since Khaled does it all, he wants to do it easier — he's combined his record-label office with a studio and hangout for his homies. On this night, though, Khaled's lair was also a video set for his signee Ace Hood, who was shooting the clip for "Overtime," featuring T-Pain and Akon.

"It's a little crazy in here, but come on, check it out," Khaled said. "I'm gonna give you, like, a quick tour ... of course we got some of our wins on the wall," he said, pointing to the plaques and awards.

"Right here — XXL cover. With me, [Rick] Ross, Flo [Rida] and Trina ... That was big for Florida. Shout-out to all the DJs ... I gotta show you some DJ plaques. Mix Show DJ of the Year, from the Sixth Annual Puerto Rico Power Summit. I got a few of these. I won five in a row. Of course, you got other wins up in here too. Shout-out to Funk Master Flex — he's definitely one of the guys that inspired me to make albums too. He's got that gold plaque right there."

Besides Ace Hood's Ruthless, which drops this summer, Khaled is working on his fourth album, Victory, which is due later this year. But before he looks to the future, the New Orleans-born hip-hop don basks in the success of his biggest LP, We the Best.

"Of course, this is big for me right here," he said, pointing to the plaque. " 'We Taking Over' — you know what I'm saying. It went gold. That was a big accomplishment for me; my life changed after that record dropped. And shout-out to everybody on the record — you feel me. I can go on for days with plaques. ... Now this record right here, 'I'm So Hood,' a million and 500 thousand singles sold ... a million ringtones. It's a movie. It's a big, big accomplishment for me."

Khaled's complex is almost done — but the one spot he's looking most forward to completing is his "Boom Boom Room."

"This is the room where we take breaks at," he explained. "Ace Hood up in here. Ace Hood got caught in that boom boom room. He's getting ready for his video shoot. This is [where we] like to lounge, watch a little TV."

Khaled was recently humbled by rap giant Jay-Z, when Hov shouted Khaled on the song "D.O.A." The mouthy DJ says he was stunned and left speechless by Jay's co-sign.

"To get a co-sign from a legend like that is big. He said my name, he said, 'We the best!' It brought a tear to my eye," Khaled said.

All this week, MTV News will be celebrating Miami's legends, superstars and upstarts. Keep checking back with us for more from the evolving city.

Adam Lambert Talks About His Crush On Kris Allen

'American Idol' runner-up tells Rolling Stone rooming with the winner was 'distracting.'
By Gil Kaufman

Adam Lambert spills the beans on a lot of things in his upcoming Rolling Stone cover story, from finally coming out as a gay man, to discussing his psychedelic fungus-fueled revelation about trying out for "American Idol" and his struggles to escape the sometimes dark, twisted Hollywood party scene.

But one of the most shocking admissions he makes is that not only is be good buddies with "Idol" winner Kris Allen, but when the two were first paired up as roommates in the "Idol" top 13 mansion, he kind of had a crush on the shy, married singer from Conway, Arkansas.

After making the top 13, Lambert sublet his Hollywood studio apartment and moved into the show's Bel-Air mansion. "I was like, 'Oh, sh--, they put me with the cute guy," Lambert said about the eventual "Idol" champ. "Distracting! He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean, he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100 percent straight." A spokesperson for Allen could not be reached for comment at press time.

And while he's diplomatic about it, Lambert makes it clear that his relationship with third-place finisher, Milwaukee worship leader Danny Gokey, was not quite as easy. Lambert said the two discussed religion a few times and "Danny is by the book, and the book is The Word," he explained. "And I respect that. Just don't try to push it on me and we're cool."

You already knew Lambert was one of the most unconventional "Idol" finalists ever, but in the wide-ranging story, the 27-year-old San Diego native opens up about his childhood — he's Jewish, but never got a bar mitzvah and hated Hebrew school because he got a bloody nose on the first day — and how despite living as a gay man, he still sometimes gets excited when flirting with women. "I loved it this season when girls went crazy for me," said Lambert, who discusses making out with and experimenting with girls in high school. "As far as I'm concerned, it's all hot."

If it appeared to some that Lambert was borrowing a page from last year's winner, David Cook, by singing someone else's re-interpretation of songs on the show, he happily admits as much. "I saw what David Cook did last year and it was cool," he said. "He thought, 'I have to sing something everybody knows, but I'm going to make it work for me, and I'm not going to give a f--- about what the theme is that week — and, most of all, I'm going to just ignore the pageantry of the whole thing."

Lambert also dishes on his best friend on the show, fourth-place finisher 17-year-old Allison Iraheta, who he says didn't go for the pageantry, either, which might have been what tripped her up. "That's why it's hard for people like Allison, who won't stand there and smile, say what they want her to say," he said.

Demi Lovato Calls Working With John Mayer 'A Dream Come True'

It seems like the Demi Lovato and John Mayer Twittermance has paid off.

Lovato — who earlier this year gushed about wanting her album Here We Go Again, out in July, to have a "John Mayer-ish" sound — managed to get the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter onboard for some of her new music.

"John Mayer's been a huge influence on me. His songwriting really inspires me," she told MTV News. "You hear music that has the same chord progression, but what he does, he changes it up. There's little things that make him stand out."

She didn't have to work very hard to convince Mayer to work with her, since he made the effort. "I guess he had heard I was a huge fan, and he sent me a letter," she explained. "Then we ended up writing together. And it was really great, 'cause he actually reached out to me, and it was like a dream come true."

That dream also meant getting a taste of Mayer's wit first-hand while working with him in the studio. "The process of the collaboration was actually really funny, because he's a really, really funny guy, and he talks a lot, so he'll go off on something. ... I had a great time. He taught me a lot about the business and gave me a lot of advice."

The recording and writing time together turned out to be mentoring sessions for the teen, who got to write some new songs with Mayer. "He had an idea, and he'd bring it in," she recalled. "He'd start writing lyrics and make it my own. It was really nice. One of the songs, he had written a lot on it, and we definitely wanted it to be a co-writing thing. So he was like, 'Take it home and finish it,' and I did, and he barely touched it. It was awesome. He really wanted it to be equal."

But Lovato's favorite part about collaborating with Mayer had to be the private concerts. "I go straight from watching that DVD ['Where the Light Is'] to watching him play my favorite songs in the studio for fun. It was right there," she said. "It was so cool."

Eminem's 'Crack A Bottle' Video Leaks

Clip mimics Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent's styles without actual cameos.
By Jayson Rodriguez

The three-headed monster is on its way.

The video for Eminem's "Crack a Bottle," featuring Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, hit the Web late Monday, and although none of the platinum rappers appear in the clip, the song has plenty of references to each star.

The video opens with a homeless woman seated on the ground next to a shopping cart filled with her possessions. The woman experiences a maniacal fit before reaching out for a paper bag that conceals a 40-ounce bottle of liquor. Once the bottle is free from the bag, it splits open to reveal an apartment building and the camera zooms in on room 313 — which also happens to be Detroit's area code.

Enter Slim Shady. Well, not exactly. But despite the rapper's absence, the scene is straight from the depths of Em's (at times) warped mind. A businessman, gagged and tied to a chair in a dilapidated room, is taunted by a mentally unstable version of himself. Images of an innocent-looking girl and, oddly, an elephant flash onscreen before the man escapes and Em's verse ends.

The camera then pans up to room 213 — Compton's area code — which contains an L.A. tattoo parlor. Dre's lyrics sprawl across a beautiful woman's body as she sits in the ink artist's chair. Pit bulls, lots of smoke and other Cali symbols appear on the screen, as well as Shady Records artist Cashis.

As the third verse begins, the camera moves up to the top floor of the set to room 718, which undoubtedly is 50's suite — the number is a nod to Queens' area code. Fif's room is decidedly flashier than the others to match his club-friendly lyrics. And there are more girls and cash in 50's scene than smoke in Dre's.

When 50's verse ends, the camera pulls all the way back to the woman from the beginning of the video. She reaches for the bottle but finds that it's empty. For good measure, she tosses the bottle, smashing it into pieces.

Back in February, Eminem's manager, Paul Rosenberg, wrote about the clip on his personal site, saying it would be done in two weeks. The video was directed by Syndrome, the production company that also helmed Em's "3 A.M." "Crack a Bottle" was one of the first Relapse tracks to leak, but it is the third official single, behind "We Made You" and "3 A.M."

When "Crack a Bottle" first premiered, all three artists — Em, Dre and 50 — claimed the track, but the song ultimately landed on Em's album. Next up for the trio are the releases of 50's and Dre's long-delayed albums, Before I Self Destruct and Detox, neither of which has a release date as of press time.

Teddy P. is a wild, wild boy. If you thought Lil Jon made a statement with his Crunk Ain't Dead chain, if you thought DJ Drama was stamping himself with his Barack O'Drama chain and if you thought Gucci Mane was downright gaudy with his multitude of iced-out neck pieces over the years, wait until you see T-Pain's Big Ass Chain. Pain debuted his new jewels on Sunday at the Summer Jam concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey. When we say "Big Ass Chain," we mean it literally — he spells it out in diamonds.

"I just figured I had to shut down something, some part of the game," Pain said. "I thought I did it with Auto-Tune, and so I guess I gotta do it with jewelry ... just show 'em where the money's comin' from. You know what I'm sayin'? This weighs seven and a half pounds, actually.

"It is a baby, actually," Pain laughed. "That's exactly how much my baby weighed — seven and a half pounds, 197 carats. Believe that. It's goin' down. I get to the end. I get so far in. That's what it is."

Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

The Game is in L.A. right now, working on The R.E.D. Album with Cool & Dre. Although a release date has not been set, The Game is about to make the temperature rise in the streets real quick with a onslaught of unofficial releases in the next couple of months.

"This summer, it ain't a n---a that's gonna out-mixtape me," Game promised. "I'm dropping a mixtape every week. It ain't gonna be like no bullsh-- mixtape sh--. I'm dropping mixtapes that sound better than people's albums. The first one is gonna be the Bloody Thumb with the red thumbprint on the front."

Until that drops, Game is busy rooting for Kobe and them Lakers in the NBA finals.

Against Me! Drummer Ditches Fame For Burritos

Posted: 10 Jun 2009 03:51 AM PDT

'It felt really natural and it was a great run,' Warren Oakes tells Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Former Against Me! drummer Warren Oakes

Dudes leave bands all the time, for reasons that are exotic and distinctly "Behind the Music"-ian (drugs, money, women, jealousy, religion, solo careers, etc.), which is to say that the average person cannot relate to any of them. Warren Oakes is different. He left Florida agit-punks Against Me! for a reason that is understandable and completely proletarian: He wanted to sell burritos.

Therefore, Warren Oakes is a hero — the "Working Class" kind John Lennon keened about all those years ago. This has less to do with the burritos as it does with the principles of the whole thing. Here, let me explain.

Oakes played drums in Against Me! for something like eight years, toured prodigiously hard (200 shows a year, mostly in a van), recorded four fantastic, hard-charging albums (2002's Reinventing Axl Rose, 2003's As the Eternal Cowboy, 2005's Searching for a Former Clarity and 2007's major-label bow, New Wave) and always looked like he was having an absolute blast. He was the bearded, blissed-out yin to frontman Tom Gabel's gruff, gravelly yang ... the kind of guy every band needs, especially when the going got tough and the crowds got hostile. And both happened quite frequently during his time in Against Me! (for reasons I documented in a column back in 2007).

If Oakes looked eternally pumped, this is basically because he was living the rock-and-roll dream. Make no bones about it, AM! will probably never be a successful rock outfit. They're probably never going to sell out arenas or move millions of units. But that wasn't the point: Oakes scratched out a living playing drums in a band, he toured the world with his best friends, and he did it all as hard as he could for as long as he possibly could. (That's why kids join bands in the first place, isn't it?)

Of course, this couldn't last forever. Economics and savings accounts and adulthood and the like are most certainly not very rock-and-roll, yet they are rather huge aspects of reality (who knew?). So in April, half out of necessity and half out of sheer exhaustion, Oakes decided to bring the rock chapter of his life to a close. He left Against Me! to sell burritos in Gainesville, Florida.

Or at least, that's what he told me on Tuesday.

See, I am an Against Me! fan. So when I first heard that Oakes was out of the band (and subsequently read Gabel's rather matter-of-fact blog post about the situation), I figured he had been fired, which bummed me out. So I called down to Boca Fiesta, the burrito joint Oakes had just opened, hoping to speak with him. I left a message with a manager named Jeff, but never expected Oakes to call back. But he did.

We talked about the AM! situation, and Oakes wanted it to be known that he wasn't fired, but rather, his leaving the band "was really a mutual decision ... it was really amicable." He said he still considers the guys in the band to be "more than friends — they're family," and added that Boca is already carrying Against Me! guitarist James Bowman's homemade hot sauce on the menu.

I asked him about his decision to leave the band — whether he thinks it was courageous or heroic or even a little bit sad. He laughed and said he didn't, that he just couldn't continue to put his life on hold and dedicate all his time and energy to Against Me!

"I was feeling a little burnt-out on traveling all the time. It's a full commitment being in Against Me! I mean, it's 365 days a year, touring and working on new songs, and I always wanted to give 110 percent. Being in the band was a full-time job," he said. "But it came to the point where I did have to face facts and realize I was starting to express interest in having some other things going on, and trying to split my time and energy just wasn't going to cut it. So that was it. It was really sad — I was really bummed at first — but then the peace came. It felt really natural and it was a great run."

And then Oakes had to go, as the dinner rush at Boca was beginning. He told me that Against Me! fans can always find him behind the counter at the joint ("I've done everything so far — washed dishes, tended bar, made guacamole!" he laughed) and said that if I'm ever in Gainesville, I should stop in for a bite. We ended our conversation — Oakes hoped I wouldn't make everything sound too negative — and I started writing this column.

Originally, I had intended to canonize Oakes, to make his plight seem tragic and his decision heroic. But really, this situation happens every day, to people not just in bands but on assembly lines or insurance offices. Dreams are put on hold, or chucked aside forever, because reality comes calling. That Oakes did it does not make him a hero, it makes him like the rest of us. And perhaps that's his lasting legacy ... the everyman former drummer who ditched the dream and walked headlong into the rest of his life with grace and joy. Like I said, the burritos aren't the main point — it's the principle of it all.

Joe Jonas Explains Why He Did 'Single Ladies'

The Jonas Brother says he donned a leotard and painful heels for the sake of his fans.

First, it was the Beyoncé fans. Then it was Justin Timberlake on "Saturday Night Live." And sometime last week, months after the song dominated radio airwaves and YouTube, a video of Joe Jonas doing his rendition of the "Single Ladies" dance popped up online. It's already attracted close to 4 million views.

The video made many wonder why Joe decided to release a video of himself donned up in a leotard and heels for Beyoncé's girl power anthem so late in the game. But the middle JoBro explained to MTV News that it was not entirely his idea.

"We filmed the video for the fans," Jonas said. "We did a contest where we were figuring out what would you like Joe to do, and you pick one [out of three choices]. One was play bongos for 10 minutes, one was wrestle with [our bodyguard] Big Rob and one was do the 'Single Ladies' dance. I've only seen [Beyoncé's] video like maybe twice in my life, and we filmed it twice, so ... it was cool."

Although doing a dance he barely knew did pose a problem for the 19-year-old, there was a bigger issue during his performance: "Heels are really hard to wear. I feel bad for every girl that has to wear heels or chooses to wear heels," he said. "They're not fun."

The video caused such a sensation that when the Jonas Brothers YouTube site went down for a few hours, fans thought that someone had put the smack-down on it. But Nick assured everyone that was not the case at all. "There was a glitch in the system, for like a couple of hours," he said. "But it was all good."

As far as Joe knows, Beyoncé and her people haven't tried to take down his homage. "It may look like it was bad, like somebody, Beyoncé, got upset, but it was all good," he said. "It's back up now."

Late last month, Mariah Carey took to her Twitter account to tell the world that her next album will be called Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and early Tuesday (June 9), she did so again to talk about the album's first single.

"The 1st single from my new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is called 'Obsessed' and will be at radio next Tuesday," she Tweeted. "I'm a lil' exc" (the post cuts off before she continues in another Tweet). "Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the whole album. I'm completely immersed in it. I can't wait for you to hear it."

Last month, Carey Tweeted, "Bcuz I Love U, I want u to be the first to know the title of my new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. It's very personal & dedicated to u."

Details about the album have been scarce, but back in January, songwriter/ producer/ artist The-Dream told KIIS-FM about some tracks he'd begun working on with the singer the week before. The-Dream and his frequent collaborator Tricky Stewart produced the hit "Touch My Body" from Mariah's last album, E=MC2.

"I'm trying to do the whole [album]," The-Dream told the station's DJ Skee.

"I love her, she's everything," he said of Carey. "She's down, she's cool, she gets it. You think she's this big, but she gets it. She's all the way in there. I told her we need to get back in there. It's not like it used to be where you can wait to come out with an album. I'm like, 'Let's go, let's do it!' And she's up for it."

The-Dream said he wouldn't want to take Mariah too far from the style that's brought her so much success in the past.

"It's like we're trying to make a greatest hits without using the greatest hits," he said. He added that he thought the album would be called MC3, but apparently that plan has changed.

Carey has said in the past how much she enjoys collaborating with other songwriters like The-Dream.

"Sometimes it's perhaps a co-writer, which you can definitely feed off that other person's energy or where they're coming from, and go back and forth with different ideas," Carey said in a statement. "That's a process that really inspires me and that I really love."

Pitbull Leads A Tour Of His Miami

'Ocean Drive can show you how broke you really are,' Pit says of his hometown's flashiest 'hood.
By Shaheem Reid

MIAMI — The world-famous South Beach strip — Miami, Florida, U.S.A.! Ocean Drive to be exact. When you think about the gorgeousness of the city, Ocean Drive is everything you imagine it to be. Celebrities, hot chicks, the best food, exotic drinks, music, partying, guys with guns (guns as in muscles, not firearms — although they can get it poppin' down there) and traffic-stopping cars (although traffic moves at a snail's pace on Ocean, but you get the point).

"We're on Ocean Drive, South Beach," Pitbull said as he drove his pristine Benz, giving MTV News a tour of his city. "Right there is Versace's mansion, where he officially got [murdered], poor guy," he said, pointing to a home so huge, they turned it into a hotel. "Not the brightest side of South Beach .

"Being from the crib, being from Miami, this is like Hollywood for us. That's why we always say, 'the other side of the bridge,' " continued Pit, who grew up in much more meager surroundings. "Ocean Drive can show you how broke you really are at certain points. This is for the big boys."

As a teen, Pit witnessed his hometown really become a darling of the music industry, with artists and bigwig execs heading down during Memorial Day weekend.

"It was definitely a place you could get your music out," Pit said, driving past South Beach Studios, where he worked with producer Pharrell Williams to record some of the songs that were featured in "Fast & Furious." And the tradition continues. "You could tell what record would be the next big record. It would officially get broken during Memorial Day weekend. All the record executives would be down here. The music business is different now. The money they was making then! The money they were spending then. You'd see Bentleys, helicopters, videos, women. It was crazy. You definitely might feed into the facade. I was 17 when all that happened. I'm 28 now."

Pit said he would have loved to get discovered by one of the hot labels at the time, but it just wasn't his destiny. He did, however, grab the attention of Murder Inc.'s CEO.

"I definitely wanted to be a part of Roc-A-Fella or Murder Inc. or Ruff Ryders. I had got into a battle with Drag-On during Super Bowl weekend on a DMX video shoot. That's when I met Irv Gotti. Irv came down Memorial Day weekend. I met with him a few times, but at the time I obviously wasn't ready for it. Not talent-wise, definitely not business-wise. I learned a whole lot from it."

The most valuable lesson Gotti dropped on him was to concentrate less on kicking rhymes off the dome and start actually writing records. "Freestyling don't make money," I.G. told him. Pit listened and obviously hasn't had any trouble making hit records for the past half a decade. His music has been embraced on an international stage.

Pit, whose parents are Cuban, got his break under the wing of Luther Campbell, but developed his style by studying all the genres of music that hit his city, from freestyle to bass and then eventually hip-hop. He also has been influenced by music from other cultures, such as Haitian and Puerto Rican.

"Right here, this used to be Luke Records," he said, passing an old building. "Right here on 12th, between 20th and Collins. Now I guess it's a furniture store. I used to hang out in that alley. I would pull up with a Cadillac Seville I bought for $400."

His Benz cost almost 10 times that. Selling records independently the last five years on TVT Records worked out well for the most part — although he has some real horror stories of business gone wrong. But Pit is excited to embark on the next phase of his career.

"This is the beginning of Pitbull," he said. "This is my chance. I'm in the major league now. I've cut a deal, partnered up with a major label, which is Sony through Polo Grounds/ Mr. 305 Inc. I've also partnered up with Sony Latin for a deal [for an album] in Spanish. I'm no longer an artist, I'm a business partner. I'm in business with these folks. I've always been independent, but I've created this foundation and fanbase."

Pit's new album is called Rebelution and drops sometime in late summer or early fall.

"Now I'm working with producers," he said with a smile. "I get a chance to work with Jim Jonsin. Obviously I'm gonna be in with Lil Jon the Diaz Brothers, the Neptunes, Play-N-Skillz. The list goes on. I can create this music where I can make [the album like a] Now! hits record. I'm not just throwing a record out there to make sure we stay relevant in the game like I was doing on TVT. I'm excited. I finally get a chance to hit one out the park. I'mma make sure it's a grand slam. This is the one right here. It's gonna be that one with God's help, obviously."

Heidi and Spencer Pratt have once again left "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" after Heidi reportedly fell ill over the weekend. Keeping it all in the family, the duo will be replaced by Heidi's sister and "Hills" castmember Holly Montag.

Holly will join the cast Wednesday after Speidi decided that the jungle really was too much for them. The duo had left early last week, only to regret the decision and blame "the devil" for leaving. In order to prove themselves, the couple were locked in a dark room. Heidi fell ill and was rushed to the hospital.

Now, Holly will be joining the cast, which already includes two Baldwins, Janice Dickinson and former "American Idol" contestant, Sanjaya Malakar. Holly has been on several episodes of "The Hills" after joining the show in season four, including this past season's finale, where she caused a little bit of a ruckus at Speidi's rehearsal dinner. According to her Twitter page, only days before being picked for the show, Holly was showing the couple her support.

The night the show aired, she Tweeted, "So proud of Heidi and Spencer!!!! GREAT job Pratts!!! xo." Just one day later, before things got really bad for the couple, she added, "Great job tonight @heidimontag and @spencerpratt. You two are hysterical and gnarly!!!! WAY TO GO SPEIDI!!"

One of the show's hosts, Myleene Klass, ended Monday night's episode announcing Holly's addition to the cast. "Tune in Wednesday ... and find out how the camp reacted to their new arrival [Holly]. So that's it, Heidi and Spencer have gone for good — or have they? You never know with those two."

And looking at their track record prior to the hospital stay — leaving the show, then reversing their decision because the devil told them to "get out of the jungle" — we definitely don't.

Miss any of "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" this week? Then tune in to MTV on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET for a marathon of the week's episodes.
