Jay-Z's Anti-Auto-Tune Song Is Embraced By T-Pain But Not Others

Jay-Z took aim at the overuse of Auto-Tune with his new song "D.O.A.," and although he claimed T-Pain wasn't a target, the Brooklyn MC admitted he wasn't sure how the computer-aided crooner would take his track.

"If T-Pain got to feel a little brunt behind that, then I'm cool with that," he said Monday afternoon (June 8) in an interview with New York radio station Hot 97. "I'm all about the culture. It's bigger than the politics. If T-Pain felt like he wanted to never talk to me again, I would have been cool with that."

T-Pain, however, stood by Jay-Z in solidarity the day before when the rapper took to the Summer Jam stage in New Jersey.

The Roc-A-Fella rapper said he was caught off guard by the unplanned gesture. "That was crazy, 'cause I didn't know where he came from," Jay told Hot 97's Angie Martinez. "I remember the concert T.I. had, and 50 Cent went onstage. That wasn't planned — same thing!

"I look, and I see somebody to my right, and I swear I thought it was a fan coming up to me to hug me," Jay continued. " 'Cause I didn't see who it was. I thought it was some cool, rock-star stuff. And then I saw him move again, and I looked back. I guess [T-Pain] wanted to get close to me."

In "D.O.A.," which stands for "Death of Auto-Tune," Jay called for more real rap. He said Auto-Tune has resulted in softer music within hip-hop and unnecessary crooning. But in an interview with Hot 97 on Friday, the night of the song's premiere, Jay made a point to compliment T-Pain for his use, admonishing the copycats.

Still, he said, the unplanned moment he and T-Pain shared onstage was strange, if not thrilling.

"It was a little awkward, but it was cool," Jay said. "He didn't mean any harm. He's just embracing the record. You shouldn't be confused by the message. I'm not saying Auto-Tune is wack. But leave that for them [T-Pain, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, the artists Jay said used it artistically]; it's not for everybody. That's how you stagnate hip-hop. You listen to the radio, and every single has Auto-Tune. So we have to get rid of that part."

Though Kanye, the song's co-producer, and DJs like Funkmaster Flex and Mister Cee sided with Jay-Z, not everyone was onboard. Some younger rappers haven't supported Jay-Z's anti-Auto-Tune crusade.

Harlem, New York's DJ Webstar, who had a hit using Auto-Tune with his song "Dancing on Me," Tweeted about "D.O.A." and his thoughts on Jay. "Who heard old ass Jay Z hating?" the youngster wrote.

Jim Jones also took aim at Jay on Twitter. "An old sucka, LOL," Jones Tweeted. "We back, and if he kilt Auto-Tune then we must be Easter, the resurrection, LOL."

Method Man And Redman To Eminem: 'We're On Your Tour!'

'Even if he don't put us on, we're coming in through the back door, jumping onstage,' Redman said of Detroit MC's tour.

LOS ANGELES — The good news for Eminem is that Method Man and Redman are coming on tour with him. The bad news? He doesn't know it yet.

"Hey, Eminem," Method Man barked into our mic recently, giving a heads-up to Sunday's MTV Movie Awards main act. "F--- that. Yo, Paul! We're on the tour, man!"

"Paul!" Redman chimed in, also addressing Em's manager, Paul Rosenberg, directly. "Hey, Paul, we're on the tour, baby!"

"You know my number," Redman said to Rosenberg. "Yo, Eminem. Yo, Paul — we on the tour, man."

"Even if he don't put us on, we're coming in through the back door, jumping onstage," he added.

Although the duo may not be fans of "Twilight," there are two things they love: Eminem and being on the road.

"We're gonna jump on Em's tour — we're putting it out there," Method Man revealed. "We do tour a lot. I'd say altogether 10, 11 months a year."

"Honestly, I'm gonna tell you exactly what that is — that's how we get our bread now," Red said. "That's how MCs make their money. Those royalty checks come like babies — every nine months.

"Plus, we enjoy doing shows," he added. "Anybody who's come to a Method Man and Redman show knows that we give 110 percent every time we're out there."

"Plus, our movie 'How High' branched us out to a different audience," Method Man agreed. "When we go around the world, the majority of our fans are a different descent than us — which is cool. I love it. That just shows we're more outgoing with our music."

And while Eminem seems to constantly be on the verge of wanting to retire, Method and Red say that they'll never get tired of touring.

"We're gonna be doing shows at 50, 55," Redman grinned.

"Redman wants to go to Vegas!" Method laughed, making reference to last year's "Soul Men," a comedy about two middle-aged musicians deciding to head back out on the road.

"I'm gonna be like Sam Jackson," Red grinned. "And he's gonna be like Bernie Mac!"

Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Leave 'I'm A Celebrity' Again

The 'Hills' stars have left the jungle for good ... or have they?
By Lindsay Soll

The drama surrounding Spencer and Heidi Pratt's fate on NBC's "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" came to a conclusion Monday night (June 8) when the duo announced that they were saying goodbye to the jungle because the conditions had led to Heidi being hospitalized. "We gave it our all that we can, but now it's about health," Spencer said near the end of the two-hour episode. "Doctors are going to be with her the next three days and it's just, you know, we went back in and we proved to ourselves that it wasn't about us. It was a life-changing experience." It was also announced that Heidi's sister and fellow "Hills" star Holly Montag would be taking their place on the show.

Reports over the weekend claimed Heidi's hospitalization was the result of "torture" practices in the "Lost Chamber" — a dark room filled with spiders and other creepy crawlies that she and her husband were forced to spend the night in as punishment for leaving the show — but NBC (as well as the couple's rep) said earlier today that those allegations were "false and inaccurate." It was revealed on the episode that the reality star left the set via ambulance after throwing up "at least 15 times" almost 24 hours after her stay in the chamber.

While at a local medical center, Heidi told the doctor that the intensity of her pain on a scale of one to 10 was "a four or five." Spencer, who stood by his wife's side as she got an IV, immediately breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I love you so much, baby. ... Jesus loves you more than anyone, baby."

The show's emergency medical specialist, Dr. Jose Martinez, then told the cameras, "With the clinical symptoms that Heidi has right now, I need to take her to a hospital so I can run more labs and tests to determine exactly what it is that's causing this pain."

Meanwhile, back at camp, castmember Lou Diamond Phillips alerted everyone that Heidi had been sent to San Jose for a stomach scan. Janice Dickinson, however, didn't believe the hype. "It's another act ... everything they do is calculated. It's another act." Sanjaya, mocking Speidi's previous religious outpours, chimed in with, "Maybe it's the devil coming out in her."

Eventually, Heidi's test results came back showing that her ultrasound was negative, which meant her pancreas and gallbladder were fine. (She also was told she's not pregnant, which made Spencer do a silent cheer.) "It does seem to be more like we were thinking — the gastric ulcer or gastritis," the doctor said. Lou once again delivered a "Speidi update" to the cast: "They will not be coming back to camp. They are no longer a part of this competition. They are gone."

Host Myleene Klass left on this note, "Tune in Wednesday ... and find out how the camp reacted to their new arrival [Holly]. So that's it, Heidi and Spencer have gone for good — or have they? You never know with those two." And looking at their track record prior to the hospital stay — leaving the show, then reversing their decision because the devil told them to "get out of the jungle" — we definitely don't.

Big L Tribute Mixtape Features Jay-Z, Lord Finesse

Plus, Fabolous brings his all to collaborations, in Mixtape Daily.
By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez

Yeah. We're switching it up this week, because we can do that. We're going to give you an abbreviated Don't Sleep this week to make way for yet another new section, Cornerstone Credentials. Our joint is all about the people who have made timeless music for the streets. 'Hood icons, we salute you. And it's fitting that we're launching it with one of the greatest spitters ever, Big L. In Streets Is Talking, Fabolous shouted us out. He's not too shabby when it comes to lyrics either.

Cornerstone Credentials: Where Legends Live

Big L was one of the best to ever do it, and unfortunately for many (from his family to his adoring fans), the slick Harlem rhyme-slinger's life was taken too soon. L had the potential to join the ranks of New York's greatest lyricists ever. As an up-and-coming MC he was compared to Jay-Z and Cam'ron, both of whom he collaborated with early in their careers — and he more than held his own.

It's been 10 years now, though, since L, born Lamont Coleman, was gunned down in what was believed to be a retaliation hit against his brother, Big Lee. Like Biggie and Big Pun, L's death left many rap fans wondering, "What if ... ?"

Last weekend marked what would have been his 35th birthday and to honor the slain rapper's life, DJ Soul (Assorted Donuts) put together a mixtape called Big L 5/30 Tribute.

The project — a hard-core NYC rap fan's dream — includes hard-to-find freestyles by Jay-Z, unreleased Big L tracks and interludes from the fallen star's friends, including his mentor Lord Finesse.

"I look at him like LeBron," Finesse said. "I was out there doing it. But he was an upcoming cat that I could tell was gonna be way more advanced than me, 'cause he caught up to me and I had him by a couple years, it was like, 'Imagine where he was gonna go?' "

Besides L's overlooked debut, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, and the posthumous The Big Picture, there hasn't been much material from the "Ebonics" rapper that showcases his trademark wit, punch lines and humor. "He was one of the funniest cats I ever met," Finesse said.

And following his death, L's family continued to suffer from a number of tragedies as his brother Lee and his mother both passed. His half-brother Donald Phinazee is the only remaining family member aside from L's father, who Phinazee said was absent in the rapper's life.

"It'll never get easier [dealing with L's passing], 'cause in the process of that, I lost my whole family," Donald, 41, told us. "I lost the middle brother and, two years after that, I lost my mom when I came home. Saturday was L's birthday. I stayed out, I lit a whole bunch of candles, then stayed there and just sat there."

Finesse and Phinazee have been working on a documentary on Big L's life and rhymes for some time now. But the pair admitted the project has been delayed due to "red tape," including L's father's insistence on contributing and taking a chunk of the potential profits. They both said L's father had little to do with him during the rapper's life and they are surprised by his demands.

"We have an artist ready at the push of a button," Finesse stressed. "But not if he's involved. Not at all. That's what people need to understand — it's not that we don't wanna do it. We just have to take care of the business end. I don't feel enthused to do it if there is a dude there waiting to get the check."

"For what?" Donald asked, frustrated. "This guy didn't care nothing about ... I could tell you stories. He was never there. That's on everything."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Fabolous' Loso's Way is done and headed for stores on June 30. On the LP, you'll find Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ryan Leslie and The-Dream. Like he's done throughout his career, Fab mixes it up with the best of the singers and rappers. So what gets him more inspired and competitive — when he receives a song where a singer just kills a hook or when he gets a track that a fellow mic champ lays a vicious verse on?

"I like both elements," he told us on the set of his video "Throw It in the Bag." "The R&B element, to me, is a little bit easier. But at the same time, I take my time with it. I feel I'm my biggest critic. I feel the whole world is listening, even though it may be a small amount listening. I feel everybody is gonna hear it. So I take my time and put my thing on it.

"With rap," he added, "I'm such a fan of hip-hop, I love it when somebody else is dope. I love the chance to go up against other rappers. 'The Hottest in the Hood' remix — Red Cafe, he hollered at me to get a verse done. I said, 'OK, let me know when you're ready, and I'mma ma put my foot in it.' "

Fab says he's going to be Mr. Reliable when it comes to his rhymes.

"I'm not one of them dudes whenever you hear the verse and you're gonna be like, 'Ah, this dude said some ABC on my sh--.' You're gonna feel like I feel, like, 'Fab really went in on this joint.' I feel that's what's kept me relevant."

Don't Sleep: Other Notables

We told you about Young Buck's new mixtape yesterday. Here's the other heat this week:

» D-Block - No Security (independent album)
» The Ruler and DJ Thoro - Summer Shutdown Part 1 and R&B Jumpoff Volume 52.5

Cassie Has 'A Closer Idea' Of Who Leaked Nude Pictures

Cassie finally broke her silence about the nude pictures of her that leaked online last month, telling a Los Angeles radio host she has a "closer idea of who did it."

The singer told KIIS-FM's JoJo on the Radio over the weekend that the leak is being "somewhat investigated," although she admitted she isn't supposed to say much about the situation. Cassie claims her e-mail was hacked into, and along with the pictures, music of hers was also leaked.

The Diddy protégé said the nude images were more than a year old and she doesn't even have copies of them herself.

"I took the pictures and sent them," Cassie said, acknowledging the authenticity of the pictures. "I don't even have them anymore, that's the crazy part about it."

Cassie said the images were for a significant other, whose identity she didn't reveal. At the time of the leak, the singer spoke out via Twitter. She attempted to downplay the situation in her only comment.

"It seems that someone has hacked into my computer," she Tweeted. "That's real foul and evil. Now stop acting like you haven't seen a t---y before."

Since then, however, she's made no further comment on the images, nor has her label released a statement. Diddy did pass Cassie a message via Twitter at the time, linking to a video for Elton John's "I'm Still Standing."

The singer said she was unsure if she would pursue matters any further at this point. She said the images came out and "there's nothing you can do about it."

She did joke, however, that if she caught the guilty party, she might take matters into her own hands.

"I might go out and torture somebody," she said, laughing.

Rick Ross Reflects On His Rise From Miami MC To International Star

Posted: 09 Jun 2009 03:51 AM PDT

'He was always this great,' Cool & Dre's Dre says of the world realizing what Florida already knew.
By Shaheem Reid

Rick Ross
Photo: MTV.com

It's Miami Week here at MTV News! During our visit, we caught up with Rick Ross for an exclusive interview about his road to stardom.

MIAMIRick Ross' "Valley of Death" really says it all. The lyrics are so intense, and the Miami native means every line: "I'll shovel sh--/ I'll C.O./ So we could bow our heads and pray over the meatloaf."

Ross said he has no problem putting his life — let alone his pride — on the line for his two kids.

"When I look in their eyes, I feel I owe [my children] the world," he said, sitting on the bench at one of his favorite stores, the Shoe Gallery. "I feel nothing is too big or too small to do for them, whether it's picking up horse manure for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. If that's what I gotta do to get them the best education, that's what I'm gonna do. I have no remorse. Don't worry about me; I'mma be fine. It's all about those next ones. ... If it's something that's gonna go down, I'mma go. If you ain't willing to sacrifice that, I feel you ain't really a G."

When Ross first admitted to being a prison guard in the past, he gave this explanation: "I was doing my job by doing my job."

"It's different ways you could make things happen," he said of his statement. "That's what it is: doing your job as a G, a provider. Get your ends up, get your ones up.

"Either way it goes, I feel I was destined to get some real paper," he added. "I look at things from a different angle. It's just like, being an employee is like being an artist. You gotta find all avenues of revenue. That's what hustling is about. That's why I love that first single. It's like, if I'm working at the Shoe Gallery, I'mma be selling the shoes, folding the shirts, making sure they neat. I'mma be sweeping and mopping. I might be thinking of a clothing line at the same time. After hours, I might be thinking of selling something that's just mine. I ain't never been one to follow the rules; I never have. I always felt I gotta get extra. That's why in the sixth grade, I was weighing 230 pounds. I couldn't just eat one pizza at lunch. I needed two pizzas. I needed two chocolate milks. I had to learn to hustle then. That's what it is."

When first connecting with J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Ross had to learn to trust the producers, who helmed most of the tracks on his Deeper Than Rap.

"The first time I got to run into them, we was in Tallahassee, Florida," Ross said about meeting the beat troupe years ago while he was recording Trilla. "We was following some dudes we don't know; they supposed to be taking us to the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The farther we go, the darker it gets. So it gets to a point, [me and the people I'm travelling with are] looking at each other: 'Let's get ready, something may go down.' We come to the house and jump out. We think it's a dope deal going down. But it really was — I was copping them dope beats. I run into the house, and what surprised me, usually with producers, you could put them all in a batch, and the most they gonna give you is two or three hot records at once. That's from my experience. You be lucky to get one, two beats. I go in there, spark one up, crank the music up. I'm sitting there, jotting down numbers, and after 45 minutes, I realized I picked 20 beats."

Ross took the tracks into his car. The first record he wrote in the vehicle was the original "Maybach Music," which featured Jay-Z. The second song he wrote was "Luxury Tax," which wound up co-starring Lil Wayne, Trick Daddy and Young Jeezy. Trilla went on to debut #1 on the Billboard albums chart. He and the League hooked up again for most of Deeper Than Rap, and the rest is history. The Bawse made the album of his career.

If you ask some close to Ross, like his producer friends Cool & Dre, Ross was holding back all these years until now.

"On the new album, that's how Ross was getting down years ago before his first album," Dre told us. "He was always this great."

Ross smiled at the assessment.

"That's how Cool & Dre feel," Rick said. "They remember us recording on the side of their parents' house. When I met them, we just went in. I recorded maybe 30 records. They'll pick vinyl out, lay the beat. The sound [in the studio] was real sh--ty. We didn't know no better. But we just kept laying them and got better and better till they became great producers and I became a great songwriter. I think it all came around full circle."

All this week, MTV News will be celebrating Miami's legends, superstars and upstarts. Keep checking back with us for more from the evolving city.

Footage of Bret Michaels getting clocked in the kisser by a set piece during Sunday night's Tony Awards telecast has already become the stuff of Internet legend. But now, we learn that the old adage is true: No pain, no gain.

On Monday (June 8), a spokesperson for Michaels told The Associated Press that the Poison frontman/ "Rock of Love" superstud/ "Super Bowl" prognosticator suffered a fractured nose and a contusion to his lip after being hit in the head by a descending set piece at the Tonys, and that he's undergoing a CAT scan as a precautionary measure, since he's had a previous neck injury.

But while it sounds pretty serious, Joann Mignano — Michaels' publicist — told the AP that the singer is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery. In fact, moments after being hit in the head by a descending set piece, Michaels was walking around backstage at the Tonys, posing for pictures with stars like Liza Minnelli and Angela Lansbury, and laughing when Tony host Neil Patrick Harris joked that Michaels' performance "gave headbanging a whole new meaning."

"He had a great time performing for the Broadway audience," Mignano told the AP.

If you missed it, Michaels and his Poison bandmates kicked off the Tonys with a rousing performance of their iconic "Nothin' But a Good Time" with the cast of "Rock of Ages," the hair-metal play that snagged multiple nominations. After the song, Michaels reportedly missed his mark and was hit in the head by a large piece of scenery that was descending from the ceiling of Radio City Music Hall.

At the time, People.com reported that the extent of Michaels' injuries were not known, but quoted a publicist as saying that the singer was planning on swinging by an emergency room for some precautionary X-rays before hitting the Tony afterparty.

For years, celebrities have headed to Miami for vacation. Some stars — including Diddy, Beyoncé, Timbaland, Lil Wayne and Fat Joe — have loved it so much that they copped homes in M.I.A.

So why is MTV News having a Miami Week now? Have you been listening to the music coming from Miami lately? There's a cool blend of MCs and singers that have the potential to be superstars, acts that dominate the game and legends gearing up to make a comeback.

It's the place where New Orleans' favorite son, Lil Wayne, recorded a significant amount of the material for his Carter III as well as his new Rebirth LP, which drops in August.

As far as homegrown product, Miami has its share of hitmakers scaling the charts and getting stamps of approval from the streets. Rapper Flo Rida had undoubtedly one of the biggest Billboard and radio smashes this year with "Right Round" and has another top-five hit with "Sugar."

Meanwhile, Rick Ross, who's scored big with heavily rotated favorites "The Magnificent" and "All I Really Want," delivered arguably the most artistically dope rap album of the year thus far with Deeper Than Rap.

Ross' A&R rep and close friend DJ Khaled maintains his status as not just one of the top DJs in the business, but a newly appointed record executive. He'll have his hands on plenty of projects coming from the Def Jam roster this year.

The legendary Trick Daddy is handling his own business now. He's about to come back with a new book, album and film.

It's Miami Week on MTVNews.com! Stay locked here for all we have to offer from the city's heavyweights.

After getting love from Pharrell Williams on the "Fast & Furious" soundtrack, Pit continues to rule the clubs with his new "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)."

DJ Irie is becoming an international commodity, is becoming an international commodity, spinning for the Miami Heat as the team's official DJ. You can catch him overseas spinning at celebrity parties for Shaquille O'Neal and various royal figures.

Producers Cool & Dre are tightening their grip as one of music's most formidable teams, with production on Weezy's Rebirth as well as new LPs by Young Jeezy, Lloyd and the Game.

The city is on fire and evolving right now, and that's not even mentioning a slew of new talent such as Def Jam singer Shonie and Ross' artist Gunplay.

Rep For Spencer Pratt And Heidi Montag Says They Weren't Tortured For 'I'm A Celebrity'

Reports are 'false and inaccurate, including any reports of 'torture,' ' rep says in statement.

On Monday afternoon (June 8), a representative for "Hills" stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt joined producers of "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" in denying reports that the couple has been "tortured" during their stint on the show.

A statement issued by a rep for the couple reads: "There have been many reports that surfaced over the weekend regarding Spencer and Heidi Pratt.

"Many of these reports are false and inaccurate, including any reports of 'torture' on the show.

"What we can say at this time is that Heidi went to a hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica Saturday evening because she was not feeling well. She has been released from the hospital and is doing well. The couple remains in Costa Rica.

"In addition, it was reported the Pratts have fired their legal counsel. This is inaccurate."

News about Montag's condition first broke over the weekend, when sister-in-law Stephanie Pratt Tweeted, "Heidi was rushed to the hospital and has an IV in her arm after being locked in a dark room for 3 days w no food or water." Montag reportedly was hospitalized for a gastric ulcer.

In a statement, series producer ITV Studios said that no harm was done to the couple, who have quickly become the go-to villains on the show featuring a cast of C-list celebs, including former "American Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar, "La Bamba" actor Lou Diamond Phillips and former supermodel Janice Dickinson.

"ITV has been producing this format around the world for many years, and the health of the celebrity participants are of the utmost importance," the statement explained. "A medic and a doctor are present at the location at all times for all participants. All allegations of the celebrities being deprived of food and water are completely untrue."

On Monday, a production source on the set in the Costa Rican jungle, who requested anonymity, told MTV News that the couple entered the "Lost Chamber" — the creepy, crawly site of one of the challenges last week — at around 4:30 p.m. local time on Thursday and exited the next morning at 6:30 a.m. "Everything was cleaned out [from the challenge], and there were two beds, bedrolls, they were given food and water, and they had a cooking apparatus and some kind of porta-potty," said the source. "They slept, and there was an incident where Spencer tried to kill a spider and hurt himself, but a medic was dispatched and there was nothing wrong."

The truth may be revealed Monday night, when the latest episode, a two-hour special, airs.

The couple spurred controversy last week by first saying they were leaving the show, then changing their minds and blaming their attempted departure on the devil.

Miss any of "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" this week? Then tune in to MTV on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET for a marathon of the week's episodes.
