Voice Of The People: Soulja Boy Tell'em Responds To You

"Behind the Beats" will return next week, homies. We got some producers who have worked with all the big boys. Just wait. Today, we are going to respond directly to you with a new section, "Voice of the People." We appreciate you sending us comments on all our stories. And while we don't always see eye-to-eye with the readers (Lord knows they don't always see eye-to-eye with us ... LOL), we definitely love you taking time to check us out.

We brought Soulja Boy Tell'em in recently to holla back about a comment from reader Whozdat02, who on May 12 gave an opinion about the teen moneymaker's dreams of getting Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne for his next album, The DeAndre Way.

"Wayne and Kanye can probably do the album, but Jay wouldn't work," the commenter wrote in. "The people that listen to Soulja Boy, for some reason, think Jay is wack or, as DonDelVita, puts it 'he's lame.' And for that reason, doing a record with Soulja Boy would be pointless, because the younger generation don't respect him."

Wow, harsh comments about the man the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust voted the Greatest MC of All Time a few years ago. Soulja Boy — like us — disagreed with his fan's assessment.

"Jay-Z, I always respected him," Soulja told us. "Always. But I didn't always like his music. I guess because I was too young, and I couldn't understand what he was saying. ... I got signed when I was 16 years old. Before I got signed, I heard the song, and I was like, 'That's Jay-Z.' My favorite song from him was 'Dirt Off Your Shoulder.' I guess I liked the beat or the way he was flowing on there. Any other song I used to hear, I ain't really vibe with it like that. I used to listen to a lot of Down South artists like Three 6 Mafia or Gucci Mane. But recently, since I'm older now and I grew up, I like Jay-Z now. I'm a fan of his music. At first, I used to just respect him because he was Jay-Z; now I'm a fan of his music and I wanna work with him.

"In the car ride over here, we was listening to 'Brooklyn Go Hard,' " he added. "He said, 'I'm Jackie Robinson — I jack, I rob, I sin.' I didn't know he was snapping like that. Back then, I couldn't understand none of what he was saying."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Soulja Boy has a few things in the works with DJ Drama. "Me and Soulja Boy working," Dram told us. "It's coming along. The tape is called Follow Me: The Gangsta Grillz Twitter Edition."

The potent Southern duo will release the mixtape on Twitter first in the coming weeks.

"Me and Soulja Boy are two guys people look to for inspiration to move things forward," Dram added. "So for all of the people who counted Soulja Boy out, that counted me out, why not? We all know how powerful Twitter is right now. Besides Soulja, look for that Drama and Gucci Mane, Drama and R. Kelly, Drama and Willie Da Kid, and possibly a DJ Drama and Fabolous mixtape."

Lil Wayne Says Rebirth Is Ready To Go

After being pushed back a few times, production is finally finished on Lil Wayne's Rebirth album, and it's ready to hit the stores.

"Expect great music. That's all I ever want them to expect from me," Wayne told us after the MTV Movie Awards.

"I wanted to grow and show my growth as well," he added. "It's a difference from when you go in a room and come out and you're better and everyone says, 'How did you do that?' So with this album, I wanted everyone to see my growing pains."

Back in April, two of the producers on the album, Cool and Dre, told MTV News that the LP would have a combination of rock and rap.

"The best way to describe the Rebirth record is that it's a Lil Wayne record," Dre said. "It's where Lil Wayne is right now in his life and career — he's expressing himself musically. 'Prom Queen' came out and that's a rock record and so everybody is like, 'He's putting out a rock album and he's on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.' Yeah, there's some rock records on there, but there's also some records where he's rapping. It's a Lil Wayne album. It's what you expect from Lil Wayne, where he's at creatively.

"It's almost like where Outkast was when they made Aquemini," he continued. "It's still a rap album, but was it really a rap album compared to all the other rap albums at that time? Andre Benjamin was evolving artistically to where he's at now — Wayne is doing the same thing, and he's not afraid to show you his growth. It's one thing we respect about him, and we feel it's something that everybody else should respect about him ... he shows no fear. To put himself out there, you're watching someone as they progress in their career."

Rebirth is slated for release August 18.

Eminem Fans Divided Over His Comments On Brüno Incident

Some applaud the MTV Movie Awards gag, others don't.

Hard as it may be for some to believe that Eminem was in on his incident with Brüno at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night, the MC's comments on the stunt have certainly gotten fans talking.

After Eminem said he was "thrilled that we pulled this off better than we rehearsed it," the response was sharply divided over whether the bit was a hilarious display of good humor by Slim Shady or a bad look for a rapper.

Many of the comments applauded Eminem and Brüno for pulling off the stunt so well. MTViewer89 labeled it "one of the best pranks of all time had so many people fooled including me. People were getting so emotional about it. Hell yeah, Shady, best prank ever."

Shorty333 chalked it all up to Marshall Mathers' marketing genius. "He can take a joke better than most entertainers ... and laugh all the way to the bank! Shock value sells. Not only is he a truly talented artist ... but he is a stable cultural icon and I give him an immense amount of credit for all he has accomplished!!! Congrats!" And asid12345678 wrote, "lol ... this guy shud get an MTV award ... classic acting!"

Hislady4lyfe said haters were focusing on all the wrong things. "Props to MTV, Eminem and Sacha Baron Cohen for this absolutely hilarious display of pure acting talent!" Lyfe wrote. "This was fantastic. Whether it's 'gay' or not for Eminem to have agreed to this stunt really isn't the issue here ... Honestly, there were nominees in the Best Kiss category for male/male saliva swapping ... who cares that Em let Borat do this? It's pretty f----n funny if ya ask me."

However, others were more skeptical. "I'm not buying it," wrote HotMilk. "Eminem is trying to save his 'tough guy' image." Jlupi agreed, writing that "the incident was worse if it was staged."

Itaintme simply didn't believe the whole story. "Watch the clip again. I'm sorry I really don't think EM knew about this," Aintme wrote. "He looks pissed off. And I don't think he would have gone back to the hotel and laugh about it, why didn't he laugh then and stay at the show?"

Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Coming Out On September 11

Album's release would come eight years to the day after release of first Blueprint.

Jay-Z will not be Axl Rose — as he joked to MTV News earlier this year — regarding the long wait for his Blueprint 3 LP. Sources close to the situation have confirmed information from radio personality Miss Info's Twitter page stating that Jay will release Blueprint 3 on September 11, eight years to the day after the release of the first Blueprint album. Hov's new set reportedly will be coming out via a new partnership with the Warner Music Group.

While the first Blueprint album was released on a truly horrific day, it provided escapism for many at the time and remains arguably the greatest opus in Jay's catalog. The album introduced Kanye West and Just Blaze to the forefront of the production world, with soulful soundscapes to complement Jigga's timeless quotables. B3 went into production in 2008 and last spring, Jay announced the album during a Kanye West concert at Madison Square Garden; he also debuted a track from the album, "Jockin' Jay-Z." Kanye, the only producer who has been announced for the album, recently told MTV News that he and Jay had scrapped some earlier tracks recorded for the LP (ones including the Auto-Tune device West used extensively on his recent 808s and Heartbreak LP), and he also revealed that his new artist, singer Mr. Hudson, will make an appearance on the record.

Since most of Jay's albums have had quick turnarounds, fans were expecting Blueprint 3 to be released much sooner. However, Jay has explained in interviews that he was taking his time and actually didn't like not having a deadline to meet. The MC recently parted ways with his longtime label, Def Jam, clearing the way for him to release Blueprint 3 via a different company. Last week reports emerged that Jay was in the process of negotiating deals with both Sony Music and the Warner Music Group. MTV News has confirmed that Blueprint 3 will be coming out via Roc Nation. WMG/ Atlantic will be handling the distribution, marketing and promotion.

Neither Jay nor his rep has released a statement. Jay — who gave a surprise performance in Los Angeles with Eminem on Monday — kicks off his tour with Ciara in Las Vegas on July 3.

Kelis, Divorcing From Nas, Tweets About Infidelity

Singer doesn't mention Nas by name, but takes to Twitter about 'coward husbands.'
By Jayson Rodriguez

In the wake of a dispatch by Nas via Maxwell's Twitter account, the rapper's estranged wife Kelis has issued a series of Tweets about infidelity.

On Tuesday, Nas told fans he was listening to Maxwell's new album and sipping high-end liquor and smoking cigars. The Tweet was accompanied by a photo of Nas and the singer partying with an unidentified group of buxom females. The message and image made their way around the Internet over the past two days, eliciting an array of comments.

On Wednesday, Kelis took to Twitter herself and released a series of biting messages about infidelity. Nas wasn't called out by name, but he and Kelis are in the midst of divorcing; Kelis is also eight months' pregnant with the couple's first child.

"This lovely day I would like to touch on cheaters. Super brief! Why be cowardly why not go after what you really want?" Kelis wrote in the first of nine dispatches.

Throughout her harangue, Kelis discussed the "sub par tricks" that participate in cheating with a married man. She said "all the scum bag coward husbands" and "less than impressive" women should unite and "go down in flames together."

"No seriously I have no patients [sic] for any of it but the problem is women usually blame the women. I am here to say the husband is way more at fault," Kelis continued.

In divorce papers that were filed in Los Angeles, Kelis cited irreconcilable differences as a reason for parting ways with Nas. Rumors involving infidelity and sex tapes have been circulating for some time, but neither Nas nor Kelis have commented directly, or at least publicly, about the reason for the split.

Pretty Ricky's Spectacular Gets Spoofed In Online Parody Videos

Singer gets -- and his red briefs -- get slammed in online videos.
By James Montgomery

Spectacular of Pretty Ricky

At this point, Spectacular's red undies have to be the most iconic undergarments of 2009. We're talking, of course, about the cherry-red bikini briefs Pretty Ricky member Spectacular is wearing in his now infamous YouTube challenge to fellow pelvis-poppers Chris Brown and Omarion. You know, the one where he pirouettes, gives himself a full-body rubdown and then humps what appears to be a shower cap (or a belt)? The one that Spec claims was expressly made "for the ladies," even though it was also intended to be watched by male R&B crooners?

Yeah, that one.

Anyway, back to those skimpy skivvies he's wearing in the video — seems they've become quite the cultural touchstone, inspiring a spate of online parodies over the past few days.

Take, for example, the animated spoof created by the folks by Be Your Own Boss Entertainment. Currently burning up YouTube, the clip portrays the crooner as a rasping, highly flexible go-go dancer who smacks hamburger patties across his backside, air-humps furiously and displays a rather amazing level of flexibility, all while animated versions of Brown, Omarion and a host of Spec's contemporaries look on in horror.

At the end of the video, Spectacular — wearing those red undies, of course — is seen on BET's "106 & Park," where after he's asked about the YouTube clip (and why, if it was for the ladies, he wanted other male R&B stars to watch it), he responds curtly, "I ain't gay."

More cunning — and definitely cutting — was It'sTheReal's (which is basically like the hip-hop "SNL") take on the Spectacular video. In a clip they called "That's Spectacular!", they broke down Spec's every pelvic thrust and lip-licking, cracking jokes like, "If Ciara is more masculine than you: That's Spectacular!" and "If your tongue moves more than your career: That's Spectacular!"

So just what does Spectacular himself have to say about all this? We haven't heard yet ... but for all we know, he could be readying another furniture-assaulting response video to his haters, like he the one he posted earlier this week. We can only hope ...

Travis Barker Talks 'Dark and Moody' Remix Of Eminem's '3 A.M.'

'There's not many songs I hear and trip out on, but this was one of them,' drummer says of the Relapse track.

It's one of the darkest, goriest songs on an album positively oozing with dark and gory songs. That's why Travis Barker knew he had to record a version of Eminem's "3 A.M."

"I first heard it on some blogs, and right away, I was like, 'Oh, damn, this is demonic,' and I love stuff like that." Barker laughed. "So I spoke to [Blink-182 and Eminem manager] Paul Rosenberg and said I wanted to do a remix of it, then Em and I spoke and discussed putting a rock twist on the song, and I got to it."

So, over the course of four very short days — during breaks from rehearsals for Blink's upcoming tour — Barker and a pair of his engineer pals laid down live guitar and bass tracks (and, of course, a healthy dose of his patented precise-yet-pounding drums). He sent them to Em for some tweaking, then put the finished product up on YouTube, and the rest is history.

"There's not many songs I hear and trip out on, but this was one of them. The song is really dark and moody, and so that's what I wanted the remix to be," Barker said. "And it was cool, because I got to work with Eminem the producer, which is something that I don't think a lot of people get to do. He listened to it, made some tweaks and gave it the OK."

And for Barker, it was a welcome return to the world of remixing — a world he's dominated over the past years with his takes on Flo Rida's "Low" and Soulja Boy's "Crank That." He had to take a break from remixing while recovering from the dozens of surgeries he endured after walking away from a fiery South Carolina plane crash last year.

"I hadn't done one since I was out of the hospital, so it was time, you know?" Barker said. "This was a dope-ass song, and when things come at me that I love, I pursue them. I was due for one, and it won't be the last."

Pete Wentz Teams With Image Comics For 'Fall Out Toyworks' Series

Five-issue miniseries centers on a toymaker, a cyborg and a kid in a bear suit.

You would think Pete Wentz already has enough on his plate: band, label, fashion line, burgeoning Twit-lationship with Mark Hoppus. Well, now he's got a comic book too.

That's right: In September, Wentz will join forces with Image Comics to publish "Fall Out Toyworks," a five-issue miniseries that revolves around a mysterious toymaker, a cyborg gal named Tiffany and a kid in a bear suit that looks lifted from the cover of Fall Out Boy's Folie á Deux.

Conceived by Wentz and Los Angeles designer Darren Romanelli, "Toyworks" will be written by Brett Lewis (who wrote the acclaimed "The Winter Men" series and Image's "Bulletproof Monk" book) with art from Sam Basri and Imaginary Friends Studios.

Little is known about the plot of the series, but as you can tell from the exclusive artwork Image sent MTV News, "Toyworks" seems to take place in a futuristic sorta-Tokyo and centers on the relationship between Tiffany — the cyber girl with the high-powered heart — the boy in the bear suit and the toymaker, who put them all together. And according to Wentz, it's also loosely based on "Tiffany Blews," a song from Folie.

"Me and Darren came up with the idea of creating ... a world around 'Tiffany Blews,' " he told MTV News. "It's more than a comic too. In the end, it will be a graphic novel, clothing, Web site and possible toys themselves."

Of course, Wentz isn't the first of his ilk to have a run at the comic book biz. In 2007, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way launched "The Umbrella Academy" through Dark Horse Comics, and the series went on to win an Eisner Award. Then, last year, Way's brother (and MCR bassist) Mikey penned a Halloween-themed Batman story for DC Comics.

According to Image, the first issue of "Fall Out Toyworks" will hit stands September 2.
