DJ AM was found dead in his New York City apartment on Friday (August 28), his rep confirmed to MTV News. He was 36.

"Adam 'DJ AM' Goldstein was found deceased this afternoon in his New York City apartment," reads a statement from AM's rep. "The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. Out of respect for his family and loved ones, please respect their privacy at this time."

TMZ, citing a police source, reported that DJ AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) was found in his apartment at 5:20 p.m. ET on Friday. Citing "sources," the site also claimed that prescription medication bottles had been found near his body. The site said that friends who had previously gone to check on Goldstein had received no response. When police broke in the door, they reportedly found Goldstein's body.

The news comes just under a year after Goldstein and Travis Barker survived a plane crash that killed four people. Leaving from Columbia, South Carolina, after a performance by the duo, the small Learjet they were on crashed upon takeoff — giving the two musicians serious burns and leaving them in critical condition. AM and Barker performed as the house band at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, just weeks before the plane crash.

Born in Philadelphia, Goldstein gained fame as a member of the band Crazy Town, best known for their hit song "Butterfly." He performed on albums with the likes of Madonna, Will Smith and Papa Roach, played in concert with Jay-Z, and made a name for himself on the private club circuit while DJing at private parties for the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Lopez and Leonardo DiCaprio. Most recently, he had an exclusive contract with a Las Vegas nightclub, and had continued to collaborate with Barker after the crash.

Before his death, Goldstein had filmed a substance-abuse intervention show with MTV called "Gone Too Far" that aimed to warn young people about the perils of drug abuse. The show was scheduled to premiere in October.

The last post on DJ AM's Twitter account, dated August 25, quotes Grandmaster Flash's 1983 classic "New York New York": "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems." Posts from two days earlier wrote about his throwing out the first pitch at a New York Mets game, which was reportedly his last public appearance. "I made it to the plate! DEF not the best pitch, but I didn't bababooey it, so I know it wasn't the worst! Still was an honor," he wrote.

Goldstein was a frequent tabloid target because of his relationships with Mandy Moore and Nicole Richie. He was engaged to Richie but the couple split late in 2005.

In a brief interview with TMZ at his birthday party in March, Goldstein referenced the plane crash when asked what his best birthday gift was: "Life."

MTV News will have more on this story as it develops.

Michael Jackson's Death Ruled A Homicide

Report cites 'acute propofol intoxication' as leading factor.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office announced the official cause of death in the Michael Jackson case Friday (August 28), citing "acute propofol intoxication" as the leading factor in the singer's June 25 passing. With police still investigating the singer's death, the coroner's office is withholding the final autopsy report pending the completion of the police probe.

According to TMZ, the coroner's statement also says that another condition contributing to Jackson's death was "Benzodiazepine effect." The latter refers to a group of tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax and Versed that are used to treat anxiety and insomnia.

The manner of death is ruled as a homicide, and the report notes that the surgical anesthetic propofol and the tranquilizer Ativan were found to be the "primary drugs responsible for Mr. Jackson's death." Among the other drugs detected in his system were: Midazolam (Versed), Diazepam (Valium), Lidocaine (topical anesthetic) and Ephedrine (used to treat hypotension associated with anesthesia).

In a statement released shortly after the coroner's announcement, the Jackson family said through a spokesperson: "The Jackson family again wishes to commend the actions of the Coroner, the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies, and looks forward to the day that justice can be served."

The homicide ruling is tied to the coroner's determination that a fatal combination of drugs was given to Jackson in the hours before his death. No charges have been filed in the case to date, but Jackson's personal physician, cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, is reportedly the focus of a manslaughter investigation. A recently unsealed search warrant revealed that Murray told investigators he gave Jackson a series of injections of the drugs listed in Friday's release in the hours before the singer's death.

DJ AM Discusses Drug Addiction In Final MTV News Interview

'I got so lost in my disease,' AM says in July 29 conversation about MTV show 'Gone Too Far.'

Just a month before DJ AM's unexpected death, reportedly linked to drugs, he spoke candidly with MTV News about his struggles with addiction.

During the July 29 interview, AM said he hoped to help other addicts on his MTV substance-abuse intervention show "Gone Too Far."

"The inspiration for the show is that I am a recovering drug addict. I have 11 years sober," he said. "Something I have always done since the beginning of my sobriety is work with other addicts in recovery. So when the question came up [from MTV]: 'Hey, we should work something out.' It's like, 'What do you like to do?' And other than DJ, that's kind of what I've always done.

"Part of me feels like, 'Who am I?' I'm a DJ. This is my one chance. I owe it as a human who's sober to say something to them. So that's my job. That's what I'm there for."

He recalled the times before he got treatment and how hard it was for him to stay focused on what he wanted to accomplish. "I got so lost in my disease. I was gone," he said. "I had forgotten, [and] I would have these little moments where I would say, 'Wow, I had goals. There was things that I wanted to do.' "

AM pointed out in the interview that "sobriety is for those who want, not those who need it." While shooting the show, he easily related to the people seeking his help. "I speak addict. I am one, and they, for the first time, they see someone who's sober, who made it out," he said. "I see myself in every single addict that I've done an episode on, and we can completely relate to another."

Drake (Sort Of) Names His Favorite 'Forever' Verse

'I'm just happy I held my own,' Drake says of collaboration with Eminem, Lil Wayne and Kayne West.

People are still debating over who had the best verse on "Forever," the all-star collaboration that leaked earlier this week featuring Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem.

But if you ask the newcomer on that list, Drake, it looks like he's partial to his mentor, the New Orleans lyricist. Although Drake wouldn't fully come out and admit it, he did say his favorite rhyme on the track was delivered by Wayne.

"Everybody does their thing on that song," Drake told DJ Drama last night over the Hot 107.9 airwaves in Atlanta. "My favorite line on the song, though, is when Wayne says, 'Life is such a roller coaster and then it drops/ but what should I scream for, this is my theme park.' That right there, word-play-wise, that's my favorite. But everybody does their thing. Kanye does Kanye. Eminem raps in a way where nobody might have heard him rap in a long time and says some things that are great for his fans to hear. I'm just proud to even be on the record. People are telling me they like my verse. I'm just happy I held my own."

"Forever" will be featured on an album inspired by the LeBron James' documentary "More Than a Game," which is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 2. The track was originally slated to be a collaboration between Drake and West, but a version of the song featuring Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nut Da Kidd had been floating around online and on mixtapes for some time. Drake, however, explained to Drama that his management presented the track to the LeBron team and to executives at Interscope (the label responsible for the project), and it evolved into its current version.

"Me and Gee [Roberson, Drake's manager] talked about the song," Drake explained. "Melody- and message-wise, we thought it would be dope to put someone on there. Originally we thought Kanye. But then the powers that be started having a lunch or two together and they put it together. With a new Wayne verse, and Interscope stepped in and we had that great look from Eminem. It's like you have the option to make a song or the option to make a moment. And it was one of those calls on that end — let's just make this something for people to remember."

DJ AM's untimely death has left the music community stunned. Many of the DJ's friends and fans have taken to Twitter to remember the late 36-year-old, as many questions still remain unanswered about his death.

Paris Hilton, who was good friends with AM's former fiancée Nicole Richie, remembered him as "one of the kindest, funniest and most talented men I have ever met." "Adam and I were friends since I was 15. RIP AM, I love you and you are already missed so much. My heart and prayers go out to his family and close friends. God bless."

Diddy tweeted, "DJ AM Rest In Peace," while Diddy's former "Making the Band" star Aubrey O'Day wrote, "RIP DJAM, life can be so short. I hope you all spend your days feeling blessed and positive! xoxo. Love you guys!"

Fellow celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson, still stunned by the news, wrote, "Waiting for someone to say this isn't true." Addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky wrote on Twitter, "R.I.P. DJ AM. I lack the words to describe my feelings."

Meanwhile, Disney star Demi Lovato is praying for AM's family. "R.I.P. DJ AM .... So sad ... praying for his loved ones."

Pro skater Tony Hawk not only expressed his grief over the loss, but also extended his sympathies to AM's collaborator and friend Travis Barker. "Not everything happens for a reason. Thinking of you, @trvsbrkr. Stay strong."

DJ Skee recalled how much DJ AM changed the game for his fellow spinners. "AM not only helped take DJing to a new frontier as the first true mainstream celebrity DJ," he said in a statement. "He opened the doors for me and many others by taking DJing as a culture, business and lifestyle to the next level. I send my deepest thoughts and condolences to his family."

Joe Francis: 'I Would Never Hit A Girl In My Life'

'Girls Gone Wild' founder gives his version of scuffle with Brody Jenner and girlfriend Jayde Nicole.
By Jocelyn Vena

After an altercation with Brody Jenner at Guys and Dolls nightclub in West Hollywood, California, late Thursday, Joe Francis spoke to MTV News and tried to clarify the night's events. The "Girls Gone Wild" founder said there is security footage of the incident that proves he didn't assault Jenner's girlfriend, Jayde Nicole, but that the "Hills" star definitely assaulted him.

"This was an unprovoked attack," Francis said. "The security-camera footage pretty much confirms my account of the events entirely. ... I was talking with a friend of mine. I got punched in the back and then all of a sudden, [Jayde] poured a drink, and then a glass hits me in the head. I turned around. I reached over. I see it's a girl, the head of the girl. I wanted to turn her head around. I grabbed her hair, and the next thing I know, my shirt's being ripped. I'm punched in the face. I go into the submissive ball until the whole thing gets settled down."

Francis said he and Jenner were escorted from the club, and then he smoked outside with club manager Chris Kasteler. "Here's what I remember: I remember having a cigarette with Chris, and the next thing, I was on the ground, so I don't remember the punch, but [Brody] punched me," Francis said. "By the time I came to, I was being helped up and [club security] were chasing Brody around the parking lot. And they tased him to bring him down to the ground ... and then three guys jump on him, and then I sped away. It's all captured on video."

In terms of legal action, Francis said, "I have some injuries. I'm considering all options right now. My jaw is swollen. I have cuts and bruises all over my body. I'm pretty angry."

Francis is quick to point out that this isn't the first time the two have scuffled. A similar chain of events took place in March at another L.A.-area nightclub. "I mean, this is ridiculous," he said. "This is the second time this guy has attacked me. He attacked me once before in a nightclub. It was in March of this year."

Francis thinks Jenner wants to use these types of incidents to garner more fame for himself and doesn't believe an earlier interview Jenner gave on Friday (August 28) to TMZ saying his girlfriend is "not OK."

"This kid runs around Hollywood. His whole thing is to try and be famous," Francis said. "I would never hit a girl in my life, and the footage proves that. Brody is saying everything he can, 'cause he knows ... legally he is dead. It's on camera. He's trying to ... cloud the whole perception of this thing so that when his arrest comes, he's trying to destroy the facts of the story. Brody knows he's guilty."

Heidi And Spencer Weigh In On Brody Jenner's Fight With Joe Francis

Posted: 28 Aug 2009 12:46 AM PDT

'There's always two sides to the story,' Heidi Montag tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

If Brody Jenner was hoping to get some support from his old pal Spencer Pratt after a reported tussle with Joe Francis, he'd better think again. It seems that Pratt and Jenner are on the outs once again, and Heidi Montag's husband isn't about to offer any support.

"I hear Brody got tased," Pratt told MTV News. "I don't know if that's what you'd call a fight. I heard Brody sucker-punched Joe, so then Brody got tasered. I don't speak to Brody, as you'll see on this season of 'The Hills.' We're definitely not friends."

According to TMZ, Francis, Jenner and girlfriend Jayde Nicole had all been hanging out at Guys and Dolls in Los Angeles (the same club where Chris Brown was seen singing and dancing after his sentencing Tuesday). Nicole thought Francis was harassing a mutual acquaintance and threw a drink on him. Francis then allegedly physically assaulted Nicole, bruising her and pulling out some of her hair.

Montag said she knows both parties involved in the scuffle and she isn't sure what happened. But does know that the several times she's met Francis in the past, he's only ever been nice to her.

"There's always two sides to the story," she said. "I've met Joe many times, and he's always been very nice and very hospitable, and so that seems very unlike Joe."

As for Nicole, Heidi said she doesn't "really know her very well. I've only met her, like, twice, and she was always nice."

Heidi added that when people go out to clubs and start to party, sometimes things get out of hand, noting that the reported events seem to rival anything she's ever experienced on "The Hills." "I'm sure with alcohol and being out at clubs and yelling always gets out of hand," she said. "I hope they work that all out. It seems really crazy."

50 Cent's '40 Day' Postponed Indefinitely

Organizers were unable to obtain permits in time for event, scheduled for Sunday.

50 Cent may rub some rappers in New York the wrong way at times, but the Queens-bred artist is generous as any entertainer when it comes to serving his community and fostering a direct relationship with fans.

This weekend was shaping up to be a display of his altruism: On Saturday he's busing in a number of residents from his former South Jamaica, Queens, neighborhood to New Jersey for a day at Six Flags Great Adventures amusement park, followed by a 50 performance.

But his "40 Day" event, also known as "Family Day," scheduled for Sunday has hit a major snag and is being postponed indefinitely, MTV News has learned.

The rapper's representative released this statement to MTV News exclusively regarding the festivities.

"The G-Unity Foundation and New York Restoration Project are deeply saddened and disappointed to learn that the permit for our upcoming Family Day event was not granted by the City," the statement read. "As a result, Family Day — scheduled for August 30th — has been postponed until further notice."

The project, sponsored by 50 and actress Bette Midler, drew the ire of the city when authorities discovered the rapper may perform at the event. The New York Post drummed up controversy around the event, reporting that locals were concerned about violence. The story cited a number of local sources, several of them anonymous, with one person saying "police brass were worried that a rival or punk out to make a name for himself would try to shoot Fitty during the performance."

The rapper spoke with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and assured officials he would not be performing. Bloomberg confirmed he talked with 50 and indicated the event would still take place. The two seemed to settle on a compromise that things could proceed if the rapper didn't perform.

G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo said the event would still take place despite the minor setback when he spoke to MTV News one day after Bloomberg told reporters he met with 50.

"The mayor was saying he spoke to 50 and he agreed that it wouldn't be a performance. Yo, I can't get at the mayor," Yayo said. "I don't even wanna say anything bad about him — I don't wanna get pulled over when I leave from outta here! But 50's big, 50s bigger than life. Rumor is he spent over half a million dollars on this."

Q-Tip, also a native of the neighborhood, recently rallied behind 50 and attacked Mayor Bloomberg's administration for having outdated views of New Yorkers. He said the move to strike down 50's performance hurts kid who may aspire to rise out of their conditions like the rapper has done. He called it a blow to the community's morale.

"I think that's a shot to morale," Tip said. "It's a shot to somebody's morale who's 15 or 16 years old. That's an impressionable soul who sees 50 Cent, how he's not able to see him perform. I think the [city's officials] are aware, but they think [50's] performance may cause rabble-rousing, or get people to act out. That's just an old way of thinking about folk, especially black folk. That's what it all boils down to, essentially."

50 Cent announced plans for his first annual 40 Day event last year. He partnered with Midler in November to unveil the Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson Community Garden. During that event he told the crowd about his plans for the summer. "We're gonna make it happen the way we been making it happen, right here," he said, referring to Family Day.

For now, though, the plans are on hold. 50's G-Unity Foundation expressed their disappointment over the news.

"Everyone in the community of Jamaica, Queens, especially the children, were looking forward to once again participating in this fun-filled, family-friendly event which was to promote community pride and provide adults and children alike with quality time together," they said.

What Does Michael Jackson Homicide Ruling Mean For Dr. Conrad Murray?

Posted: 28 Aug 2009 04:26 AM PDT

It's unclear whether the singer's physician will face any criminal charges.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Now that the Los Angeles Coroner's Office has ruled Michael Jackson's death a homicide, the spotlight on the singer's physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, will burn even brighter. Murray has cooperated with police during their investigation into Jackson's death, detailing what medication he had administered to the superstar prior to his passing. But will the homicide ruling lead to criminal charges against Murray?

According to legal expert Peter T. Haven, that might be difficult to determine.

"You have to show that there's proof beyond a reasonable doubt that he was grossly, criminally negligent, which is more than regular negligence," Haven explained to MTV News. "You would have to show he did what he did with a strong sense that this was likely to put Jackson at risk."

Murray, for his part, disclosed to police the number of drugs Jackson was taking leading up to his death, including propofol. The drug, also known as Diprivan, is normally used to put patients under for surgery, but Jackson was using it as a sleep aid.

There's been criticism lobbied toward Murray for administering lethal amounts of the drug to Jackson, which was a leading factor in his death. But medical expert Dr. Steven Garner, who works at the New York Methodist Hospital, said Murray's action should cause more alarm in this case than Jackson's actual drug intake.

"A lethal dose [of propofol] for one person may not be a lethal dose for another," Garner told MTV News. "Which is why using a drug like propofol, you have to use it carefully, make the right dosage for the right person. We don't have many cases where people have chronically been given this drug to put people to sleep. There's no prescribed dosage, because people don't use it for anything but surgery, where there's extensive monitoring. This guy was injecting [Jackson] and leaving the room, not monitoring him and not having the proper equipment. It's really like a case of murder."

The word "homicide," however, can define a number of different deaths and doesn't always indicate a criminal act. A few cases of homicide, for example, are justifiable (self-defense), vehicular (car crashes), excusable (professional liability) and negligence.

There's still a number of factors to investigate to determine if Murray could possibly be charged, Haven said. But if the doctor acted in good faith and his patient still died, he has a legal defense of professional liability. A lawyer for Murray spoke with The Associated Press on Friday afternoon (August 28) and lashed out against authorities in Los Angeles for announcing the homicide ruling but not releasing the full findings of the autopsy report.

Haven suggested there might be additional information the coroner has knowledge of that may never make it to the report. He said that information may not matter much, though. Unless Murray is proved to have had full knowledge that the dosage he gave Jackson would be fatal but continued anyway, a criminal charge will be hard to pursue. It's worth noting that a medical malpractice charge may be pursued, however, if it's determined Murray acted below the standard care expected of a physician. Haven said Murray's care might have been below standard but not with any premeditated intent to cause harm.

"It's like drag racing down a crowded road," Haven remarked. "It's grossly, criminally negligent. You don't intend to kill anyone, but you're putting people at risk."
