The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Respect comes first for Plies. He has to respect you as a man, then as an artist, for him to collaborate with you. For the first time ever, working on his new project, he reached out to fellow rappers. Although he still won't divulge names, he said he collaborated with one MC in Atlanta. Plies said the mainstream audience "won't understand" another collaborator, but the underground will definitely tune in.

"Goon Affiliated, I had the pleasure of having my brother home for this album," he told us of the LP's title while parked on his tour bus in ATL. "He actually came up with the title of this album. The three previous albums, 'real' was incorporated into the album title. For me, we felt Goon Affiliated wasn't too gangsta, wasn't too soft. It was right in the middle. Kids in the suburbs could have goon friends and be goon affiliated. You could be a street cat and not call yourself a 'goon' but have goon homeboys and be goon affiliated. Or you could be a goon and be goon affiliated. It's a whole diverse situation for me."

Plies said having big bro Big Gates home is just adding to his overall project. In addition to the album title, Gates is also helping to critique records.

"For me, to have my brother home ... I was more than excited about ... having the chance to go through the album the other day and have that other ear I didn't have," Plies described. "It's some songs I put on my album that the streets ended up loving, but I had better songs than that. People will see this time, with this fourth album, there won't be nothing like it."

Plies already leaked the brash track "Becky," and another cut he said to check for is based on a TV program.

"I got a song right now called 'First 48,' " the Florida native revealed. "It's wrapped around the whole TV series 'The First 48 Hours.' I'm telling you on the record: 'Everybody is a goon until they catch a case/ When the detectives get to the talking/ All that gangsta sh-- fades away/ The first 10 minutes, dog, you started off straight/ Detective applied a little pressure, you turn around and break.'

"That whole situation for me, that intro, I'm sitting here watching TV, and I didn't know it was that many unreal dudes still left in the streets," he continued. "I just focused on that situation. That's one of them records on my album I call 'choir rehearsal.' I know everybody is gonna sing it every time I perform it."

Fox Has 'No Expectation' Paula Abdul Will Return To 'American Idol'

'And in terms of the negotiations themselves, the negotiations have concluded,' Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice says.

Paula Abdul's very public renouncement of her seat at the "American Idol" judges table on Wednesday (August 5) left many fans and entertainment insiders wondering if this was merely another negotiating ploy in contract-renewal talks. Surely Abdul wouldn't simply walk away from the biggest show on television? Surely Fox wouldn't allow a fan favorite of over eight seasons to disappear from the screen?

But it seems that's exactly what will happen. At a Television Critics Association press conference on Thursday, Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice told reporters Abdul almost certainly will not return to "Idol," according to multiple reports.

"We were hoping Paula came back," Rice said. "We love Paula. She's been clearly wonderful on the show for eight years and was an important part of the 'Idol' family. There's going to be a change. It wasn't a decision we made. But now that the decision's been made, we have to look at it in a positive way. We have to look at it as an opportunity for the show to bring a different energy to it and an energy that can be entertaining for the public."

Rice said that Fox made a "very fair" offer to Abdul that included a substantial raise, but that she decided not to return for another season. According to reports, Fox's offer was for a multiyear, eight-figure deal that would have been a 30 percent raise from her last contract.

"I have no expectation that Paula's going to [re-open negotiations]," he said. "And in terms of the negotiations themselves, the negotiations have concluded."

When if Abdul decided to accept Fox's last offer? Rice said he did not expect Abdul to make such an offer and would not give an answer about what the network's response would be.

Rice said that Abdul will ultimately be replaced by a permanent fourth judge, who will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi. Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham and Katy Perry have been recruited as guest judges for one show each.

"What we need to find is someone who has great chemistry," Rice said. "It's really a casting job. ... There are multiple right answers and there are multiple wrong answers. Our job in the next four to five months is to really consider what makes this the most fun and the most entertaining."

Will Shyne Pick Up Where He Left Off?

Our hip-hop team speculates what's next for the former Bad Boy artist, in Off the Dome.
By Shaheem Reid

It looks like Shyne is coming home. After many false release dates swirled around over the past few years, a judge has set October for Shyne's release from prison after serving eight years. Obviously, the first thing his fans can hope for is that Shyne finds peace and tranquility in his personal life while he gets acclimated back into society.

Then, there's his music career.

Before Shyne was incarcerated, the young Brooklyn rapper was one of hip-hop's blue-chip MCs: sharp lyrics, distinctive voice, a captivating presence, respect from his peers and a major powerhouse behind him, Bad Boy Records. Shyne left Bad Boy years ago to go to Def Jam (a company that was one of many to woo him for his first recording contract). Godfather Buried Alive was released on the label in 2004.

So what happens next for Shyne's career? Rahman Dukes and I contemplated Shyne's next move. Rahman feels that aligning with Jay-Z and Roc Nation is a can't-miss. Rah says the Brooklyn connection could be unbeatable, seeing that Jay's reach and influence is so vast.

I see it a little differently. While you cannot argue that anything associated with Young Hov will be successful, I'm thinking of Shyne partnering up with another heavyweight: Kanye West. Yes, Kanye.

Kanye is arguably the best producer in the game today. Shyne will have a helluva story to tell, he has the credibility and hopefully his flow will still be intact. Lyrically, he told me five years ago that he's written 10 albums in prison. All he needs are some beats. There's no producer in the game right now whose track will make a more beautiful marriage with Shyne's vocals. Me and Rahman also look forward to Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz and Cool & Dre working with Shyne if we had our wish — check out the video for the full conversation.

What do you think Shyne should do with his music career? Is hooking up with Kanye the right move? Sound off below!

Passion Pit Declare Themselves The Official Video Music Awards Underdogs

'They don't need this like we do,' drummer Nate Donmoyer says of other Breakthrough Video nominees.

Passion Pit are VMA virgins, so we're willing to give them a pass on this one. But, if we could give them one piece of advice, it would probably be this: The next time you're asked about your first-ever Video Music Award nomination, you probably shouldn't answer like this:

"When I found out we got nominated, I was in the car with my mom and I got an e-mail," bassist Jeff Apruzzese laughed. "I was like, 'Hey, mom! We got nominated for a VMA!' "

Uh, cool! Still, there's plenty that the guys in PP are still learning ... after all, they've only been a band for a little more than 18 months. But, thanks to their eye-popping video for "The Reeling," they're now officially VMA nominees in the Breakthrough Video category, which puts them up against some rather stiff competition.

"I thought it was a joke at first, and then I went on the Web site and I saw all the other nominees, and I was so flattered that we were even nominated with all these bands that I've listened to all these years," Apruzzese said. "Like, Death Cab for Cutie were my favorite band for a really long time."

"If you ask me, we don't have a chance of winning," keyboardist Ayad Al Adhamy laughed. "Seriously, we have absolutely no chance of winning this."

They're just being modest, believe us. Because "The Reeling" — directed by a first-time music-video director named Humble — most definitely has a shot at winning, thanks in no small part to it's time- and space-warping special effects, which actually come from a very old-school method.

"Every 10th frame was reprinted on newspaper and then torn and re-shot again, so it was kind of back-end stop-motion photography," drummer Nate Donmoyer explained. "And so I think that's what people react to the most about it ... nothing really looks like that anywhere else."

Which means that "The Reeling" might actually be the favorite to win Breakthrough Video, or at least strong enough to give the bigger names in the field (Death Cab for Cutie, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Gnarls Barkley, to name just a few) a run for their money. And money is what they all have in common — and it's what separates them from the guys in Passion Pit.

"Don't all those other bands have VMAs already?" Donmoyer joked. "They have VMAs, Grammys, tons of money — they don't need this like we do."

"I think we're the underdogs," Apruzzese added. "Definitely. We're the official underdogs."

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Nominees, celebrity presenters and additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.

Kanye West Plays Intense, Brooding Set At New York G-Shock Party

NEW YORKKanye West must really like G-Shock watches. The Def Jam star put on a spectacular performance for the second year in a row at Casio's Shock the World event at Cipriani's on Wall Street, where the company unveiled new timepieces and a series of collaborations with Redman, celebrity tattoo artist Mister Cartoon and skateboarder Stevie Williams, among others.

West capped off the festivities with an hourlong set. He entered wearing a mask to shield his face and was accompanied by a shifting digital display behind him that counted down his time onstage. The rap star was often restrained while performing some of his biggest hits, including Jay-Z's latest, "Run This Town," sans Rihanna and Jay. The toned-down effect signaled a quiet intensity reminiscent of an "MTV Unplugged" session.

"This is my favorite song of my career," 'Ye told the lively crowd in the middle of his set, tossing his mask as the opening chord of "Can't Tell Me Nothing" began.

Kanye performed "Robocop" and "Nightmares" from 808s & Heartbreak with an equally muted energy, drawing out the lyrics he rapped. This dialed-back set may just be a preview of things to come when West goes on the road with Lady Gaga.

West's girlfriend, Amber Rose, was just offstage, mouthing the words to most of his songs. Other in attendance included Fabolous, Day26's Que, Dawn Richard, DJ Clue and actor Alan Cumming. New York radio DJ Enuff manned the turntables.

The Cipriani performance was a stark contrast to last May's 25th anniversary celebration of G-Shock, in which Kanye headlined and gave attendees a sneak peak of his Glow in the Dark tour. The light production amazed most, but the rapper surprised all of the guests, including Spike Lee, when topless background dancers ushered their way onstage next to him.

But Kanye wouldn't be Kanye if he didn't take at least one opportunity to speak up. So while he was restrained, he definitely wasn't quiet. Before he closed out the night with "Stronger," he went into a 10-minute "Pinocchio Story"-esque freestyle in which he spoke on the discomforts of fame and took a moment to lash out at the media, even referring to his encounter with the paparazzi at LAX.

"I have to pay a f---ing $100,000 'cause he says I hurt his f---ing arm," 'Ye rapped, letting the words hang in the air. "But I was just trying to break his camera, not cause him no harm."

NEW YORK — Uh, a little more advance notice next time, fellas, please! On Thursday night (August 6), ?uestlove sent a post out on his Twitter account saying, "nyc---be in times square 7 pm SHARP!!" He tweeted soon after, "THAT is all the info you need."

Around 7:25 p.m. ET, the Roots walked on a stage in Times Square with a tuba player leading the charge. To the surprise of the crowd gathered, the Roots began performing.

"You feel this sh-- soon as they throw it on," Black Thought rapped, saying the chorus to his theme "Thought at Work." "You feel this joint, this is your new favorite song/ You at the dancehall, you got it going on/ It's time to show it off, so throw your hands up."

After a little James Brown-like improv on the mic to hype the crowd, the Illadelphia legends turned to their new single "How I Got Over."

Later, the band started playing guitar riffs from "Iron Man," and Thought told the fans to wave their hands. This transitioned into "The Seed (2.0)." The short set ended like it started, with Thought going to work. This time he covered Kool G Rap's "Men at Work" with an Uzi-pellet flow.

"My rhymes keep me fresh like a container," Thought rapped. "Some rappers said my rap is dead/ Shake your head to my bass like a basehead/ There'll be bloodshed, enemies shot/ Those who beef get sliced into pork chops/ Until your fork stops stabbing my rhymes."

The surprise show was in promotion of RadioShack's Netogether promotion.

Beyonce Or Britney? Eminem Or Kanye? Your VMA Picks

Posted: 06 Aug 2009 12:13 AM PDT

We chose our winners — now it's your turn to sound off!
By James Montgomery

Britney Spears and Beyoncé
Photo: Alan Davidson /WireImage

Beyoncé or Britney? Eminem or Kanye? And what about Gaga or Jay?!?

From the sound of things, if you require a last name, you don't have a prayer of winning at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Or, at least, that's what you're telling us anyway.

See, on Wednesday, we gave you our VMA predictions — who we saw winning September 13, when the show is broadcast live from New York City. Even though we're still roughly six weeks away from the big show, that didn't stop us from calling this one already. In our opinion, Beyoncé is the odds-on favorite to take home the most Moonmen, including Best Female Video, Best Choreography and, the night's biggest award, Video of the Year.

Of course, that prediction sat pretty well with B's fans — but not so well with the legions of Britney disciples out there. Seems we had Beyoncé beating Ms. Spears in each category, something that seemed impossible to Brit's supporters. And they let us know about it. Then Beyoncé's fans let them know about it too.

So basically, the comments on our original story quickly became a battle of Beyoncé vs. Britney — but the bickering wasn't strictly limited to fans of the divas. We had Eminem fans sparring with Kanye kids (the hip-hop heavyweights are up against each other in four VMA categories), Lady Gaga devotees sticking up for their favorite fashionista and even fans of Pink letting their voices be heard. The response was thunderous.

And since it will be these same fans who determine the winners in most VMA categories — by voting over at VMA.MTV.com or texting VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers — all that back-and-forth is pretty vital. So we decided to highlight some of the best of the best. And if you still think your favorite star hasn't been represented, feel free to join the conversation in the comments below.

Here are your VMA predictions:

"Beyoncé better do almost a clean sweep. She DESERVES five of the awards she was nominated for. Britney fans, get over yourselves. 'Single Ladies' dominated. It was done by the president, Tom Cruise, Justin T., Katy Perry, Joe Jonas, being used as a plot theme for television series 'Glee,' a hundred women in Europe did it in the street, Oprah did it ... and has been dubbed the 'biggest dance craze since Thriller.' Beyoncé owns all. Tell Spears' non-talented self to watch out. ... Beyoncé's showing her how it's done." -- Laniece07

" 'WOMANIZER' IS A MUCH BETTER VIDEO THAN 'SINGLE LADIES.' All Beyoncé did in her video was dance in a black and white room the whole f---ing time!!!! What the f---!? Seriously BRITNEY DESERVES TO WIN!!!!" — Britneyluvr887

"I think it will be Britney or Beyoncé competing for Video of the Year. 'Single Ladies' created a huge dance craze, but 'Womanizer' was 100% classic Britney and really solidified her comeback. I'm going to say Britney." — Tokeefe

"Beyoncé completely wins. It made way too much of a pop-culture impact to not. It will be remembered in music video history forever, so if they give it to Britney's regular romp of hair-swinging and nakedness and intricate editing ... [then] MTV is officially DEAD." — JD

" 'Womanizer' has a story, special effects, choreography and different stages. It's so funny too. NO DOUBT it's the most complete video and the song is amazing. BRITNEY SPEARS - 'WOMANIZER' -VIDEO OF THE YEAR AND BEST POP VIDEO." -- Andrescr05

"It doesn't matter what the voters vote for. We all know who had the most iconic video this year and that's Beyoncé! None of these other videos compare. ... Win or Lose it is Beyoncé all the way." — Crazy8

"You're forgetting fans are voting, and Britney's fans are crazy with Internet." — Feehily

"I think Beyoncé's video is overrated! Britney or Gaga will take home Video of the Year!" — EthansCircus

"This night will prove to belong to Lady Gaga." — DrakeHottie369

"Britney is nothing but hyped. ... I like Gaga ... so it's Gaga's and Beyoncé's year!!" — BGray482

"[In] Best Hip-Hop Video, I think it's gonna be close between Em and Jay-Z." — KonyakZero

"Eminem!!! All the way. I mean, I love Kanye and all, but it has to be Eminem. Love that guy. And I also can't wait to see what happens this year at the VMAs. I think it's going to be very interesting." — Tina

"Well, I love Kanye's music. I like how it is very unique and the beat is always stuck in your head somewhat afterward. ... I am also a fan of Eminem, however, I do not approve of all the slamming he does on others. I do like his music though, and he is extremely talented, and so is Kanye. Honestly, I don't know for sure which one will come out on top. I'm anxious to figure it out though." — Tuff_Brunette

"Both albums sucked. Jay or T.I. should win all the hip-hop categories. Kanye's last album wasn't even hip-hop. He sung the whole time." — TheKing591

"Eminem isn't even a competition for 'Ye. Stop the crap! Go 'Ye!" — SadeRRR

"PARAMORE OR FALL OUT BOY SHOULD NOT WIN BEST ROCK VIDEO! KINGS OF LEON, COLDPLAY OR GREEN DAY SHOULD WIN!" — IllWitSkills

After announcing on her Web site on Wednesday that she would be performing at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, Britney Spears took to her site on Thursday (August 6) to clarify that she will be appearing — not performing — at the show.

"Update: Britney is appearing, not performing at the TCAs," the statement reads. "We are deeply sorry for any confusion and disappointment and appreciate the ongoing dedication of Britney's wonderful fans."

Spears' appearance will be honored with the Ultimate Choice Award, a rep for the show told "Access Hollywood" on Thursday, after it had been clarified that the singer will not be performing. Spears is also up for three awards, including Choice Music: Single for her song "Circus"; Choice Music: Female Artist; and Choice Music: Tour for her Circus tour, which hits the States again later this month.

Spears will join hosts/nominees the Jonas Brothers, the "Twilight" cast and Miley Cyrus, who is set to perform her new single, "Party in the U.S.A." "Twilight" dominates the nominees list with 12 nominations, including Drama, Romance and Actor and Actress in a Drama. The Jonas Brothers scored nine noms, including Love Song and Breakout Show.

Cyrus, "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" and "Gossip Girl" all tied with 10 nominations each, and find themselves battling it out against each other in the Choice Music: Soundtrack category, where the soundtracks for "HSM" and "Gossip Girl" goes against the soundtrack for "Hannah Montana: The Movie."

Paula Abdul Discusses 'American Idol' Departure

'[Simon Cowell] misses me already,' Abdul says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Paula Abdul, who announced via Twitter that she's leaving "American Idol" on Tuesday, talked about the situation with TMZ at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Wednesday.

"It's been overwhelming, what's going on right now," she said, adding that any offers coming her way these days are being considered. "So I have to really carefully think about it."

One of those offers came from former "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to appear on his show, "So You Think You Can Dance." He told "Access Hollywood,", "I'll ask her to come on the show... possibly as a performer and as a dancer." He also told TVGuide.com that now that she's free of her "Idol" duties "she's got no excuse" but to come on his show as well.

But if the offer is on the table, Abdul said she wasn't aware of it. "I didn't know I was being given an offer," she said. "I love the show. It's a wonderful show, [but] I don't know."

Until she actually figures out what the next step in her career is, Abdul did share that there are a few very important things she'll miss most now that her time is over with the show after eight seasons. "My compadres, of course," she said. "I love the kids, and that's the thing I enjoy, but they all reached out and called me."

Apparently, the kids aren't the only ones who are missing Abdul these days. "[Simon and I talk] all the time," she said. "He misses me already."

Shyne's Lawyer Explains Confusion Over Prison-Release Date

Posted: 06 Aug 2009 01:55 AM PDT

Due to computer error, even Shyne wasn't sure when he was being released.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Now that Shyne is "90 percent of the way home" from prison, as his lawyer told MTV News earlier this week, the rapper's October 6 release date from prison will be as highly anticipated as a blockbuster album release date.

But fans also might wonder if Shyne is really getting out of jail this time.

After a number of rumored release dates over the years, fans have grown wary about the possibility of the rapper's return after being imprisoned following a guilty verdict in 2001 for his involvement in the Club New York shooting case, which also involved Diddy and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. Every year, word spread that the Brooklyn MC would be sprung from jail, and then nothing happened.

So what's the deal?

Shyne's attorney, Oscar Michelen, spoke to MTV News on Thursday (August 5) and explained that his client's release date was never in question.

When the rapper was sentenced in June 2001, a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Corrections confirmed to MTV News that Shyne would not be eligible for release until he served eight years and seven months of jail time. At the time of the sentencing, Shyne had already served two months in New York's Rikers Island. A simple calculation with that public information reveals Shyne's release date was always set for October 2009.

The rumored release dates over the years, Michelen believes, were a result of misinterpretation of legal filings and, at one point, a computer error.

"I'll tell you what happens, I think [the basis for the rumor] was created by a computer," he explained, "because the Department of Corrections has a Web site where you can do an inmate look-up. And if you have the information it will show you that [Shyne's] earlier release date was originally April [of this year] and then June. And we don't now how that was in there. But it showed that. And then what would happen is before a release date [an inmate] would get produced before a parole board, and in the institution there would be rumors that [Shyne] was up for parole. I guess inmates or guards would spread the rumor."

But Michelen said Shyne has never actually been before a parole board.

"To my knowledge he was never actually physically presented to a parole board, because there was no decision to be made," he said. "It was clear when he would be getting out — he would be getting out the earliest he could — so what would he discuss, really?"

The June date that was listed in the electronic database of the DOC, Michelen explained, was Shyne's minimum early release date. It was a date Shyne could have been released with good behavior, at the discretion of officials, but due to the violent nature of the rapper's crime, Michelen said all parties involved pretty much knew the true release date would be the maximum early release date in October of this year. There's only a small degree of subjectivity involved with granting the earlier April date over the October date, Michelen said, if Shyne served with good behavior, after laws enacted in the past by former New York Governor George Pataki eliminated a larger leeway judges previously held in sentencing offenders.

To further complicate matters, Michelen said that when his client filed a motion a few years ago challenging the constitutionality of his conviction, he believes people assumed the potential release date if the motion was granted became Shyne's new release date.

The rumors took on such a life of their own that Michelen said people took them as fact — at one point, he said, Shyne himself was just as confused. However, he is now clear to be released on October 6.

"People love rumors," he said. "They hear things and then they think it's gospel. [Shyne] even called me and asked, 'Am I getting out in June?' "
