Holding It Down For: The Whole Mixtape Game

Mixtape: Gangsta Grillz: Gangsta Paradise

Real Spit: DJ Drama and the G-Unit have been talking about collaborating since before 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo were working on their T.O.S. album. A full group Gangsta Grillz hasn't solidified yet, but Dram did get a chance to lock in with one-third of the Queens music murderers.

"You hear my mixtapes on ThisIs50.com and you hear them with DJ Whoo Kid," Yayo explained. "I wanted to go out of my element this time. It was like, 'Who should I go to? DJ Drama.' Atlanta is poppin', New York City's poppin', everywhere is poppin' — but I had to go to Gangsta Grillz. [Mastermind DJ Drama] paved the way for a lot of artists. He's the hottest DJ to go to. Shout out to Whoo Kid, but I did this one with Drama this time."

"My relationship with G-Unit has always been quite a good one," Drama said. "It's always been love, always been respect. I've always been a fan of their music and their mixtapes. The mixtape game wouldn't be what it is without Yayo, Fif, Banks, Whoo Kid, G-Unit. For me to come up and do my thing with Gangsta Grillz and us to unify — it's perfect. The streets been wanting this for a while. Yayo hit me, I said it's perfect."

The Talk of New York says he titled the tape after a slang term in his neighborhood.

"That's the name of Queens — shout to Southside Jamaica," Yayo explained. "Shout to Willie the Kid and La the Darkman. The video is crazy. Real recognize real. I've been dropping a lot of mixtapes on my own, learning from 50. I think I'm starting to get the game mastered. It takes some time. Swine Flu, Swine Flu 2: Tha Pandemic, Public Enemies. Now I got Gangsta Paradise. Reason I call it Gangsta Paradise is because the gangstas in Queens call it 'gangsta's paradise.' Brooklyn is the jungle."

Yayo and Dram are hopeful that they can knock out a full G-Unit Gangsta Grillz once 50 finishes filming his latest movie.

Joints to Check For

» "Cut Throat Sh--." "I got a lot of down South beats. I got a lot Master P joints on there," Yayo explained. "Mystikal, UGK — I got 'Swamp N---a' on there. I wanted to try something different. I know a lot of n---as are not thinking to rhyme off of 'Swamp N---a' by Master P."

» "Drama." "I thought it was perfect [for Yayo to use Southern beats]," Drama said. "Somebody like Yayo — I know he knows how to put a good tape together. Sometimes you gotta walk artists through it, help them with beat selection. When he sent it to me, I was like, 'This is genius.' It's a lot of quality Southern beats on there. It's not just hit records, it's the dope records — through the years, the timeless records."

Asher Roth Gets Deep Into Character In 'She Don't Wanna Man' Video

Being that he's a Video Music Award-nominated artiste, Asher Roth takes his craft very seriously. Which is why, when MTV News visited the set of his "She Don't Wanna Man" clip — which premiered Monday (August 24) on MTV — we found him tucked away in a corner, eyes closed, getting deep into character. It's called method acting, in case you were wondering.

Actually, we're kidding. He was lounging backstage with his buddies Boyder and Brain Bangley, joking about hangovers and scoping out the video vixens director Jonathan Lia had assembled for the shoot. We told you he takes his craft seriously.

"This is a real party; it's not one of those fake video parties," Roth laughed. "A lot of the scenes are back and forth, boys versus girls. [It's] a girl-empowerment song. Letting the girls do their thing and have fun and just boogie and not have us be all over them. But we still chase after some booty, you know?"

The video — which features Roth and company traipsing through a packed club, macking on (and spectacularly failing with) assorted females — also boasts a cameo by Keri Hilson (she gives Roth no play either), an old Asher associate who sings the track's hook.

"When we put 'She Don't Wanna Man' together, we pretty much put together your dream-team list of artists that you would love to collaborate with on that song. And Keri was a friend that was in Atlanta with us, and we had met early on, and we were talking about working together," Roth explained. "So when we put together our dream list, she was on the top of it. We sent [the song] over to her, and she absolutely murdered it. So we had to get her for the video too."

And he should know. After all, Roth — who's up for two Moonmen at the VMAs (Best Hip-Hop Video and Best New Artist) — is quickly becoming an old pro when it comes to making videos. And if there's one thing he's learned early on, it's that shooting them should be as fun as possible.

"Keri is an absolute honor to have around. She's a beauty. She's so cool. For those who don't know her, she's legitimately a great human being," he said. "So we're just happy to hang out. We're all buddies, we get along, and we're lucky to be in a situation where we can be ourselves and rock with our friends and shoot videos that get to be on MTV."

Hottest MCs In The Game: How Is The List Compiled?

In October, the reveal of MTV News' 2009 "Hottest MCs in the Game" list begins. Before you start running up on the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust members on the street asking why Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G. or some of the other greatest MCs of all time aren't on the list, let's reestablish the criteria.

First, note that — as it was in 2007 and last year — the list is based on an MC's accomplishments over the past eight to 12 months. Rather than analyzing an artist's entire career, like we did in our "Greatest MCs of All Time" series in 2006, we break down what's going on right now. That doesn't mean legends can't make the list: Jay-Z and Outkast's Andre 3000 have made our previous two lists.

For the criteria, we factor in the following: How the MC's words penetrate on the mic: Can their lyrics stab hearts, does their flow enthrall you? Obviously we look at how they implement their talent with the quality of music as well. The music is always primary, but not the only aspect of a Hot MC. We look at their success, both musical and entrepreneurial: Do they sell albums, singles and ringtones? Do they top the charts? Are their records heavily spun on the airwaves? Do they have businesses that flourish? Have they put other MCs in the game? Do companies clamor to get them to endorse products? And finally, there's the intangible, impact: Of course you can look at metrics such Google hits, Twitter followers and YouTube views — which we do — but do these MCs move the needle on the culture? Can the mere mention of their names start conversations? Do they start trends? How much do they get fans engrossed? What's their buzz? Keep in mind though, these are the main factors. When the Hip-Hop Brain Trust sits down, passion over a certain issue or artists will ultimately determine who ranks where.

The Hip-Hop Brain Trust is currently comprised of eight MTV staffers — Tuma Basa, Buttaman, Rahman Dukes, Sean Lee, Shaheem Reid, Steven Roberts, Jayson Rodriguez and moderator Sway, who expresses his opinions at the round table but does not vote. Prior to convening, all Trustees will come up with their own personal lists — which we'll disclose once the entire list is revealed — choosing who they felt were the MCs dominating in their craft. This year we will also tally up a list of the fans' top 10. There's a poll running our Web site right now (voting closes on September 21) where we pose the question, "Who is the Hottest MC in the Game?" The top 10 choices from this readers' poll will be included this year, with Sway representing them at the table. Once all 10 lists are in, we mathematically add the total in one master list. Each rapper gets 10 points for every time they rank #1, nine points for #2, and so forth. Once that is accomplished, the Hip-Hop Brain Trust will sit down at the table and fight it out. Keep in mind, just because an artist makes the master list, that doesn't mean that he or she cannot be taken off and replaced with MCs from outside the mathematical top 10. Others can rise of fall within the top 10.

We've had plenty of controversy over our past lists — Lil Wayne won in 2007; Kanye West in 2008 — and this year's will undoubtedly be the most controversial yet!
