Drake Thinks Knee Injury Was 'In The Plan'

Drake agrees that there's no place like home.

The Toronto native returned north of the border recently to recuperate after he reinjured his knee three weeks ago while onstage in Camden, New Jersey, during Young Money Presents: The America's Most Wanted Music Festival.

The "Best I Ever Had" rapper said being back in his hometown has helped center him. After breaking through with his mixtape, So Far Gone, in February, the rapper had been on a meteoric rise that culminated with a record deal through his management and Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment in June. A few minor setbacks, however, followed — from the "Best I Ever Had" video backlash to his knee injury — but he's rebounding now.

"[This is] giving me a chance to come home," Drake told MTV News about his injury. "With the series of events that have happened since I've been home, I've finally got my first place in Toronto by myself, which has been an amazing experience. I've gotten to see a lot of friends. We did that Toronto show. We had an amazing night — me, [Young] Jeezy and Trey [Songz] and everybody at a restaurant.

"That and the music I started making," he continued. "I finally made peace with my city. And that was important for me to start this album, because I didn't feel peace here. I was starting to come home and feel like everybody was staring at me weird. I was starting to feel a little paranoid. A couple things will happen, people will try to check on you. And you just get to the point where it's like, 'I don't feel comfortable at home.' That's a bad thing, especially when Toronto inspires so much of the music that I make."

While he's been in Toronto, Drake also worked on the video for "Successful," featuring Lil Wayne and Trey Songz. While on the set, Jamie Foxx stopped by and talked to the upstart MC about his injury, pleading with him to take it easy. Drake said he's gotten text messages from LeBron James and Chris Paul echoing the sentiment. "[They] told me, 'This is serious what you're dealing with, a sports injury,' " Drake explained. "Everyone is telling me cool out."

Drake is scheduled for surgery next month, he revealed on Twitter this past weekend. He's still one of the most talked-about rappers right now. And who knows? This experience might be his "Through the Wire" moment, catapulting him from adversity to making history.

"I don't want to jinx it, but things are going so well on this little break until surgery that I just feel like it was in the plan," he said.

Katy Perry Is Jealous Of Taylor Swift's Part In VMA Promo

'But everyone keeps telling me Anita is hotter,' Perry says of her saucy role in the 'West Side Story' skit.

NEW YORK — For the second year in a row, Katy Perry is all over the MTV Video Music Awards, as the success of her smash-hit album, One of the Boys, maintains its impressive chart run. She's nominated this year in the Best Female Video category for "Hot N Cold," and when MTV asked her to appear in the VMA "West Side Story" promotional skit, she was kind enough to join the party.

"I play Anita," Perry said on set at Brooklyn's Navy Yard. "Although I know I should be playing Natalie Wood['s part, which is being played by Taylor Swift], because I've got the big eyes and the brown hair. But everyone keeps telling me Anita is hotter, cooler and sluttier. So I can relate to that!"

Perry rounds out the cast of Taylor Swift, Cobra Starship, Ne-Yo and 2009 MTV VMA host Russell Brand in the "West Side Story" promotional spot.

Always the showstopper, Katy Perry has become known for her outlandish outfits. She wore 12 different outfits as host of the 2008 EMAs. Come September, she's looking forward to the challenge of yet again surprising fans with something new.

"I'm excited about that process, because you can wear all kinds of crazy things to the VMAs," she said. "It's not like the other awards shows where you have to be popular and pretty and stuff. I'd come and look like a real-life cat if I wanted to ... or just a strawberry."

And if last year's event set a precedent, some form of fruit might actually be in the running for what Perry is going to wear.

"Last year, I had a jumper made, and it had a banana on it, because everyone knows I'm obsessed with fruit. I don't know why. But bananas are kind of cool. ... I basically just peeled it in a very seductive way. And it was a little phallic. It was still innocent. That was kind of my little creation. It was really fun."

Perry's "Hot N Cold" is up against Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and Pink's "So What" in the Best Female Video category.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Nominees, celebrity presenters and additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.

Our Hottest MCs In The Game Debate Is Missing One Thing: You!

Posted: 17 Aug 2009 04:37 AM PDT

MTV News wants to give you a seat at the roundtable after your overwhelming response about this year's list.
By MTV News staff

Hottest MCs roundtable

Response to this year's Hottest MCs in the Game debate has been overwhelming since we announced it last Monday. The voting for the fan poll is up a whopping 420 percent compared to last year. Comments have quadrupled from a year ago, topping 2,000 entries as of press time. You, the fans, the bloggers, everyone weighed in and passionately pleaded the case for their favorite rappers to make the list.

Which led us to one conclusion: We have to give you a seat at the roundtable. So we're pushing the countdown back until October. What's more, we're going to do things differently. We're factoring in your voice.

In previous years, each member of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust compiled his or her top 10 list separately. We then took the individual lists and made one master list based on a point system that awards artists 10 points for every time they were ranked #1 on a list, nine points when they're ranked #2 and so on. Once the master list is set, then the debate really begins as each position is reviewed, points are parceled, and every angle is discussed. Positions aren't locked in until the big show when a consensus vote is reached by the group on each slot.

This time, however, your list counts.

Your fan-poll votes will be compiled to be another list alongside ours. Your voice will count in the debate, and our moderator Sway will represent your case — your comments, arguments and insights — during the roundtable. It sounds like a great partnership to us.

Joe Budden's underground appeal? 50 Cent's star power? Jay-Z's legendary status? Eminem's comeback? Soulja Boy Tell'em's army of Twitter followers? We hear you loud and clear. The finest hip-hop minds at MTV News have had some of the same thoughts.

As we do with each Hottest list, we start by judging on accomplishments from a very short timeline. Rather than analyzing an entire career's span, like we did for our Greatest MCs and Greatest Hip-Hop Groups of All Time lists, we decided to break down what's going on right now. That doesn't mean you can't make the list if you're a legend. Andre 3000 and Jay-Z are two legends who have made our previous two Hottest lists.

For our 2009 list, we looked at the work of the most prominent MCs of the past year and factored in the following: How have his or her words penetrated the mic? Does their flow enthrall you? We look at success, both musical and entrepreneurial. Do they sell records and ringtones? Do they top the charts? Are their records heavily spun on the airwaves? Do they have businesses that flourish? Have they put other MCs in the game? Do companies clamor to get them to endorse products? Finally, there's the intangible impact. You can look at metrics such as Google hits, Twitter followers and YouTube views — which we do — but do these guys also move the cultural needle? Can they provoke conversations? Do they start trends? How dedicated are their fans?

Jadakiss' flow might push him past Raekwon's influence. Kid Cudi's buzz could be topped by T.I.'s sales. But it only matters if the artist is active right now with a project, either in stores or in the streets, over the past year, or if they've made some game-changing guest appearances. To be considered the Hottest MC in the Game, you have to matter more than anyone else at this very moment.

Last year, Kanye West topped the list. The year before, we crowned Lil Wayne the hottest of the hot. This year, it's up for grabs. Between the freshmen, veterans and even the greats — all of them are in the arena.

Beginning on Monday, August 24, we'll roll out the curriculum vitae of each artist on the poll using your comments, video uploads and our perspective as we make the case why these MCs are in the conversation. And throughout the month, we'll be hearing from all sides of the debate: producers, DJs, radio personalities, music journalists and even the artists themselves. We'll also have feedback from celebrities, actors and athletes, too.

So keep voting. Log on to MTVNews.com every day. And get ready to bring the heat.

The polls will close September 21, and the roundtable will convene — and you'll be right there with us!

Diddy Releases Club-Ready Last Train To Paris Mixtape

Mixtape from Diddy's 'dance music alter ego' 'Lectro Black features throbbing club beats.

Diddy's been promising a full-on return to music for a while, and the hip-hop entrepreneur appears to be making his comeback the right way, by hyping the release of his upcoming Last Train to Paris album with a mixtape that dropped on Saturday.

Diddy announced the tape — produced by famed Chicago remixer Felix Da Housecat (Britney Spears, Ciara, Madonna) and released on Saturday — with a tweet in which he bragged, "Lectro Black is my dance music alter ego!!! Mr. Lectro Black is a bad mother----er!!! Close your eyes and jump!"

The electro-house mix is precisely what Diddy has been teasing for more than a year, with a Kanye-like mix of rapping and singing and a fervent promise from the Bad Boy boss on the thumping intro that, "We are the crush groovin', the body movin', the record makin' and the record breakin'. We go by the name of 'Lectro Black and we represent that dirty, dirty. We represent that electro, that funk, that hip-hop, that punk rock, the dirty, dirty. We ain't into that commercial, crowd pleasin' ass-kissin' DJ, 'throw yo hands in the air, wave 'em like you just don't care' sh--! We want your mind, we want your body, and we came to take your mother----in' soul!"

What follows is an hour of LCD Soundsystem-style throbbing club beats with a mix of Diddy's patented swaggering boasts, some Auto-Tune-tweaked singing and talking, and even a bit of breathless pleading, in which Diddy promises, "I'll blow ya mind ... you will be mine!" The through line is a series of calls from Diddy to an unheard Felix, as the Bad Boy impresario keeps pushing back his early-morning arrival time in the City of Lights.

The whole thing plays like a very long, trippy and supremely sweaty night at an underground dance club you probably can't get into, with tweaked out bits of MGMT's "Kids" thrown in for good measure about halfway into the mix. "World, get ready," Diddy warns as he pulls into the station near the end. "Can you hear the train? Last Train to Paris is comin' soon. ... Don't be confused. It's simple. 'Lectro Black ... I'm gonna f--- your mind up. I'm gonna take you to a place you're scared to go to. I'm gonna make you feel good. So this is what we call a warning shot."

The tape is a teaser for the high-concept Paris album, which Diddy has described as an emotional journey from London to France's capital, during which he falls in and out of love with a mysterious lady. He recently revealed that he put together a female duo to accompany him on the trip, former Danity Kane singer Dawn Richard and songwriter Kaleena Harper.

Drake Sets Date For Knee Surgery

Injured MC will go under the knife on September 8.

When Drake re-injured his knee during the Philadelphia leg of Young Money Presents: America's Most Wanted Music Festival, his boss Lil Wayne announced the following night that his protégé would undergo surgery the next morning.

For anyone that saw the Toronto rapper's fall, it'd be understandable if he rushed to go under the surgeon's knife. But, it turns out, Weezy's announcement was a bit premature. Now, however, Drake's date with the doctor is finally set.

He took to Twitter on Sunday (August 16) and sent word that he'll be undergoing surgery on his knee — which suffered three torn ligaments — on September 8.

"In the studio ... working on Thank Me Later ... magic ... surgery September 8th," he wrote. "Then we're back in business."

Drake spoke to MTV News recently about his second injury, which he said rivaled the pain of his initial mishap. In June the rapper tore his ACL, MCL and LCL while playing basketball. He was set to join Wayne, Young Jeezy and Soulja Boy Tell'em as one of the America's Most Wanted headliners. After his injury, though, he shortened his set from a full production to a reduced medley of hits during Wayne's time. But excitement got the best of Drake when he ran across the stage at Camden's Susquehanna Bank Center during his performance of "Best I Ever Had."

"The stride that I had, I planted with my right and I had a brace on," he recalled of the moment. "I would say it was borderline more painful than the initial tear. It was bad. It buckled, popped. I was down. I remember slapping the ground. I couldn't believe it. I saw the lights coming down. [And I was thinking] 'Did I just fall?' I was in so much pain then that I didn't care at the time. They actually cut a nice pair of jeans that I had, all the way up. Bad. But it's all part of my story. I feel like maybe it needed to happen. I came out on that tour for one reason and one reason only — I didn't show up for the money or the fact that I even needed it right now. I showed up there for the fans that genuinely saw me on the tour [bill] and said, 'That's why I'm going.' "

On Monday (August 17), it was rumored that Jessica Simpson would be the next celebrity to join Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi at the judges' table on "American Idol." But it turns out the only reality show Simpson will be on is her upcoming VH1 show "The Price of Beauty."

Simpson's rep shot down the New York Post report that she'd be one of the guest judges for the upcoming season of the show. "There is absolutely no truth to this," her rep told Us Weekly.

The report also said that it is her dad and manager, Joe Simpson, who was pushing to get Simpson a slot on the program, a claim he denied on his Twitter page. "So, I am in Thailand ... But, of course, the Post says I am in town trying to get [Jess] to be the replacement for Paula Abdul ... Do the lies ever stop????"

Meanwhile, People magazine is reporting that country star Shania Twain is in talks to be a guest judge. She could be one of the judges when the show makes a stop in Chicago on August 30 and 31, the mag reports.

If Twain does sign on, she'd be joining Mary J. Blige, who will guest-judge when the show stops in Atlanta. Katy Perry and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham have also been confirmed as guest judges for this season, hoping to fill the void left by Paula Abdul's surprising exit.

The permanent solution for filling Abdul's empty chair has yet to be announced. Earlier this month, Peter Rice, chairman of entertainment at Fox, told Reuters that they'll be coming up with a replacement "between now and January. ... Obviously, there is going to be a different dynamic, [and] there is something exciting about that."

The Jonas Brothers are gracing the cover of Rolling Stone for the second time in a year — but the most recent issue, out Friday, is a special collector's edition.

The limited-edition issue, which features tons of photos as well as archives of interviews with the guys, a trivia quiz and posters, is a must-have for any Jonas Brothers fan. It also includes a recent interview in which the guys discuss their big summer tour, which kicked off on June 20 in Dallas.

"I had this dream as a kid where I'm standing onstage with just a white spotlight," Nick recalled in the issue about getting to live his dream. "Now that moment happens every night in our show."

Fans will also get an intimate look at what the guys do while on the road, like playing wiffle ball with each other and watching movies like "The Hangover." "Usually we like to tour, tour, tour; but sometimes you're just exhausted, so we try to go home to relax," Joe shared.

The guys, who recently got to host the Teen Choice Awards, also wax poetic to the magazine about what musicianship means to them. "Music theory bores me," Kevin said. "It's all about feel for me."

But for Joe, the true rush comes from hitting the stage every night and hearing the fans shout his name. "When fans are screaming all around you, you're like, 'Whoa, awesome.' "

Kelly Osbourne Is 'Terrified' By 'Dancing With The Stars'

Kelly Osbourne is ready to get her dancing shoes on for the next season of "Dancing With the Stars," which premieres September 21. And although she admits she's not the best dancer in the world, she does say that being in the competition is a very exciting opportunity.

"I am so excited, but I cannot tell you how terrified I am," she told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on Monday (August 17). "Dancing is something that I've always really wanted to be able to do, but never had the confidence and the technique, if you know what I mean. I'm not very graceful, so it's just something that absolutely terrifies me — and it's the main reason that I kind of wanted to do it."

The former MTV star admitted that one of the main reasons she signed up for the show is because she "wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something that scared me, and I don't think anything could scare me more."

Osbourne, who will be competing alongside Mya, who starred in "Chicago" in 2002, admits that she's ready for the challenge of dancing, something that she couldn't quite do when she starred in "Chicago" in London.

"I'm just excited to be a part of it," she said. "A couple of years ago, I was in 'Chicago' on the West End and I was originally meant to be Roxie — but when it came down to doing the dancing, I couldn't learn the dancing in time because I can't dance, so I went and did Mama Morton instead."

The singer — who doesn't care if she wins or loses the show — did seem excited by the chance to get fit training for the competition, saying, "My body is going to get sick and be toned.

"You make mistakes, you learn ... it'll be like a team of people going on a journey together, so it'll be fun," she said, adding, "I mean this from the bottom of my heart: I don't care if I win. I'm not doing this to try and prove that I'm better than someone else at something, I'm doing it because it scares me."
