Ke$ha Rises From Oddball To Icon In 2010

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 03:52 AM PST

This year, nobody defied description quite like Ke$ha, the pop oddity who shows no signs of slowing down.
By James Montgomery

In January, when "Tik Tok" was just starting to hit, I described Ke$ha as "a 22-year-old pop confectionary/cautionary tale." By November, when "We R Who We R" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, I had crowned her an "outcast icon." The truth probably lies somewhere in between those two statements, but if there's a better way to sum up the pop star's rather incredible rise to fame, I am unaware of it.

Because in 2010, there really was no one else who came close to matching Ke$ha, whether in terms of sheer chart dominance ("Tik Tok," enjoyed the year's longest run at #1, spending nine weeks atop the Hot 100), or pure WTF-ery. She began the year as a belching, squelching, booze-swilling party monster and ended it as perhaps the most unlikely of role models — an unrepentant oddball who not only dared to speak her mind, but defy conventions, too. And through it all, she remained largely unclassifiable, shifting between genres (pop, hip-hop, rock) and personas (dumpster-diving diva, Topanga Canyon bohemian, DayGlo star child) with each successive hit. And because of that, Ke$ha became one of the year's most interesting characters, the kind of pop oddity that leaves critics alternately grasping at adjectives and scratching their heads.

"I think 'What is Ke$ha?' is definitely the question, more than 'Who is Ke$ha?' because the 'What?' is really the thing," New York Times writer Jon Caramanica told MTV News. "When she first came into the game, she was this pop singer with a little bit of a country background, but [doing] this sort of whiny, white-girl rap ... but, if anything, 'Tik Tok' proved there's an entire audience of people who are pop fans, but who have a really high tolerance for rap music. Maybe they're not going to buy a Kanye West record, but they're not unafraid of hip-hop. And with Ke$ha, and her loose, 'I don't give a f---' approach to making these songs resonates with the loose, 'I don't give a f---' approach of the fans in listening to the songs. They hear something of themselves in her."

Of course, Ke$ha suffered for her, uh, art, becoming one of the year's most popular punching bags — particularly following a pair of bizarre performances on "Saturday Night Live" — but as the year draws to a close, her grip on the pop world seems to be permanent. Not only is she the unlikeliest of stars, she's also one of the most persistent ... and love her or hate her, you've got to admit that she made 2010 just a bit more bearable, even if it was with her willingness to push the boundaries of absurdity. Well, her songs were pretty great, too. And she did it entirely her way.

"I think Ke$ha's definitely gone way past her 15 minutes of fame, [but] the appeal with her is that there's an honesty," Noah Callahan-Bever, editor in chief of Complex magazine, said. "In a market of totally prefab pop stuff, there's almost a sloppiness to her whole persona, and I think that realness appeals to people. I think it doesn't hurt that she works with the best producer in pop music, either," he said, referring to right-hand man Dr. Luke.

In 2010, thanks to that winning combination of pitch-perfect pop and pure, unfiltered weirdness, Ke$ha pretty much conquered the world. She won over fans and earned begrudging respect from the critics. And she wore dead animals on her head. Wherever she goes in 2011, I'll follow. And I'll likely be just as perplexed as the rest of you.

Do you expect Ke$ha's party to stop or keep rocking in 2011? Let us know in the comments.

'B.M.F' To T.I.: The Top 10 Hip-Hop Stories Of 2010

Take a look back at what happened to Lil Wayne, Guru, Nicki Minaj and other rap stars in the past 12 months.

In 2010, the biggest stories in hip-hop imbued the community with collective cheers (as new stars like Drake and Nicki Minaj began to break out) and sobs (as Guru passed and T.I. returned to prison). There were also stories we'll probably still remember years from now, like when Eminem and Jay-Z joined forces in their hometown ballparks or when Weezy was freed from Rikers. Here, MTV News takes a look at the top 10 hip-hop stories of the year.

"B.M.F." Bawses
Rick Ross' industrial-strength anthem was hip-hop's biggest street record of the year and transformed the Miami MC from punching bag to Teflon Don following his feud with 50 Cent. His textured voice delivered a series of massively catchy lines ("I think I'm Big Meech!"), while 2010's breakout producer Lex Luger laced the track with a concrete-hard instrumental. "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" served as the soundtrack to the summer, and rappers like Lupe Fiasco ("Building Minds Faster"), Sheek Louch ("The Real New York") and Jermaine Dupri ("I Think I'm Berry Gordy") all took the beat for a spin.

Drake Debuts
Heading into 2010, the Toronto lyricist was still riding high from his breakout mixtape, 2009's So Far Gone, and expectations were adding up like late charges. But the Lil Wayne protégé handled the pressure like Mike Vick in the fourth quarter: calm, composed and cool. His first official LP, Thank Me Later, featured the hits "Over," "Find Your Love" and "Fancy" and easily found its way onto many year-end best lists, while Drake took his act on the road for a series of buzzed-about tours that included surprise guests (Jay-Z, Eminem, J.Cole, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant) that would make for a good career, let alone 12 months.

Eminem Recovers
After a rocky return with 2009's Relapse, Em went back to the studio for Recovery. This time, however, with a series of new collaborators (Rihanna, Just Blaze, Alex Da Kid, DJ Khalil) that reinvigorated the Detroit MC. The result: two soaring #1 hits ("Not Afraid" and "Love the Way You Lie" ) and a nod as MTV News' Hottest MC in the Game. Expect some spillover for the potty-mouth wordsmith as he's up for a leading 10 Grammys at the 2011 ceremony.

Weezy Was Freed
Lil Wayne's folklore grew by Incredible Hulk-size leaps and bounds over the past 12 months, beginning with a series of events leading up to the New Orleans rapper turning himself in to serve 10 months in a New York prison. After being granted a temporary reprieve when a fire at the courthouse delayed his sentencing, he stunned a Madison Square Garden audience in March when he joined Young Jeezy onstage during his set on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour. While behind bars, he released a full-length album, I Am Not a Human Being, which debuted at #1. Then, following his release in November, Wayne traveled to Las Vegas to join Drake on the last stop of his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour, where he turned the Sin City crowd into LeBron James-level witnesses.

G.O.O.D. Fridays Deliver
Kanye West made it his personal duty to deliver a new song to the Web via his blog every Friday from September through December, and the producer galvanized the hip-hop community with a series of dazzling numbers. Every seven (sometimes eight) days, 'Ye dropped songs that were album quality but with the intensity of mixtape material. The payoff came when he took the tracks and spun them over into elongated and elaborate records that powered his stunning My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Guru Passes
The underground icon passed away earlier this year, spurring a cloud of controversy as his business partner Solar and the rapper's family feuded over details surrounding Guru's death. The sudden fall of the beloved star left fans in shock. But DJ Premier and Guru's nephew led a spirited charge to channel the rapper's legacy and the indelible mark he left on music as a part of Gang Starr and through his Jazzmatazz series.

"Home and Home" Triumphs
Jay-Z and Eminem scored on this mini tour as they traded massive headlining gigs in their hometowns, two shows in Detroit and another two in New York City. Eminem raised the stakes on the first two stops in Comerica Park by bringing out Dr. Dre, Drake and 50 Cent. Hov, however, was not one to be outdone and turned Yankee Stadium into an All-Star Game with a lineup that included Kanye West, Swizz Beatz and Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj Ascends
In the past, decorated MCs like Busta Rhymes and Ludacris battled for the crowd as they joined an array of artists in collaboration on their tracks. This year, though, Nicki Minaj was on most people's speed dial. The upstart artist took the throne from the boys as the guest star on a series of tracks by big names from Mariah Carey to Kanye West. She's a monster, indeed.

"Runaway" Soars
Kanye West returned from his self-imposed exile with the driving "Power," but it was during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and later with the premiere of the "Runaway" video, that the embattled MC made the true inroads to his comeback. The allegorical number featured West's sweeping production and Pusha T's sharp-elbowed punch lines. 'Ye's self-deprecating rhymes, though, humanized the superstar and brought the attention to his amazing skill as an arranger; not to mention, it spotlighted his devilish charm despite his ornery ways.

T.I. Returns to Prison
The Atlanta MC inspired plenty of people last year during his TV series, "T.I.'s Road to Redemption." His hard-luck story, however, turned into steel when he was arrested yet again, for drugs, following his release from a halfway house earlier this year. This time, though, he admitted a dependency problem and begged a judge for leniency, T.I. was sent back to prison to serve 11 months for probation violation. His recent album, No Mercy, showcases the rapper at his most introspective as he looks for his life's answers.

Stephen Dorff Describes 'Immortals' As ' '300' Meets 'Gladiator' '

'I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,' Dorff joked about the final product.

For those anxious to see more of Stephen Dorff after his critically acclaimed role in Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," you won't have to wait too long to see him back on the big screen. Dorff's next film is the buzzworthy "Immortals," directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh ("The Fall," "The Cell"), which also stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently, we asked him for his take on the film.

"So much of that movie is going to be done in post [production]," he said, adding that he has no idea what it will look like when it's finished. "I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings," Dorff joked. "I don't know what's going to happen."

The veteran actor described "Immortals" as " '300'-meets-'Gladiator.' "

"[There's] a lot of testosterone," he said. "A beautiful girl, Freida Pinto, brings the innocence and femininity to the movie and she's really great. I found her great to work with."

With regard to his onscreen action with Rourke, who plays the villainous King Hyperion, Dorff said that again, due to the amount of visual effects that will need to be added to the film, he's unsure of what the final product will look like.

"Mickey kinda is in this mask for most of the movie, so I don't know how it's going to be in the final cut, but he looked great. I had most of my [scenes] with Freida and this other character [Theseus, played by Henry Cavill]. John Hurt is in it as well."

Dorff went on to say that he is sure the film will be great, but that the larger scope of the production was a big change from the intimate environment he worked in on "Somewhere."

"Whenever you do something that big — especially coming from 'Somewhere' — I always get a little nervous," Dorff admitted. "But I have to keep moving until Sophia does another movie, or another filmmaker I'd love to work with does another movie. ... I have to hopefully pick the right things. I'm trying to be careful with what I do next," he said.

Check out everything we've got on "Somewhere."

If Justin Bieber thought he could hit up his local mall on Boxing Day without stirring up a frenzy, he was wrong. When Bieber decided to partake in the post-Christmas holiday on Sunday, hoardes of teenage girls took notice ... and freaked out.

According to Canada's Record, when Bieber arrived at the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener, Ontario, the day after Christmas, he couldn't fly under the radar while trying to shop. "There were vases being broken and people climbing over other people and a lot of screaming," Bieber fan Taylor Inder told the newspaper. The fan added that there was lots of "chaos" and "screaming, screaming and more screaming."

Bieber first made a stop at a jeans store in the mall and then went to check out sunglasses, when he was followed by hundreds of female fans. Police officers also followed Bieber and his entourage. Bieber hails from Stratford, Canada, near the mall.

"I thought, 'My God it's a 16-year-old boy who's shopping; what's the big deal here?" Sunglass Hut manager Sarah Pelletier recalled about being asked to shut down for the pop star's arrival. "I was concerned because there were hundreds of girls out there and three police officers at my glass doors, and I'm like, 'I don't think this is a good mix.' "

She explained that she wanted to get Bieber in and out as quickly as possible. "I'm glad he supports his local economy, and he said he keeps some of his money in Canada," she added.

While many Bieber fans delighted at the chance to catch a glimpse of the star, Bieber himself tweeted: "Of course i had to join in on Boxing Day....Im Canadian."

With a slew of recent pregnancy and engagement announcements, it appears to be the season of romance for celebrity couples. LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian are the latest couple to take on the relationship milestone by announcing their engagement on Monday (December 27), according to People magazine.

"Yes, they were engaged over the holidays and are very happy," a rep for Rimes said in a statement. A source tells the mag that while the duo spent Christmas at home in Los Angeles, they did have family and close friends in town to celebrate the momentous occasion.

On Monday, the pair was spotted on a Malibu beach, where the blond songstress was seen wearing her new engagement ring. According to the source, the couple wanted the ring to have "an antique feel, but a new ring." Rimes, Cibrian and the actor's childhood friend Brent Polacheck collectively designed the platinum band, which bears a 5-carat oval diamond set in the middle of a rose gold fleur-de-lis.

The singer/songwriter took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to share the big news with her fans. "Thank you for all your well wishes!!" she wrote. "We are extremely excited and look forward to a beautiful future. It's been an incredible last few days. I was shocked!!! We are blessed, our families are so happy and our lives are filled with love. It was nice to have our little secret for us, our families and friends a few days! So excited to now share the wonderful news with our fans."

The 28-year-old songstress gave a shout-out to her publicist, who also serves as representation for Natalie Portman. The "Black Swan" actress also had big news to share by announcing her engagement and pregnancy Monday. "So funny, my dear publicist is the same rep for Natalie Portman and me. So much for his vacation lol!!! Love you Rhett!!!!!" Rimes tweeted.

However, the duo's road to engagement hasn't always been smooth sailing. Both Rimes and Cibrian were married when they first met each other during the filming of the Lifetime original movie "Northern Lights." The affair made headlines, but the singer stuck to her guns saying, "That's just not me. What happened is not who I am, period. ... You had two couples whose marriages didn't work who really stumbled upon each other and fell in love."

After the duo separately finalized their divorces, there was nothing but love on the horizon. In November, engagement rumors sparked after Cibrian tweeted a photo of himself on bended knee holding Rimes' hand before a sign that read "White Chapel Lunatic Asylum."

It seems as though Natalie Portman has had a most festive holiday season, both on professional and personal levels. Not only is her film "Black Swan" garnering rave reviews and award nominations galore ("Swan" received four Golden Globe nominations, among others), but the petite actress recently became engaged to boyfriend Benjamin Millepied, with whom she is expecting her first child.

"I have always kept my private life private but I will say that I am indescribably happy and feel very grateful to have this experience," Portman gushed in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

Portman and Millepied met during production of "Black Swan," for which Millepied was the choreographer and played the role of Portman's dancing partner. The two have remained quiet about their relationship, but reportedly started dating in early 2010. Millepied told Details magazine he was "blown away" by her acting abilities and that she was "amazing to watch," but didn't go into any details about their relationship. "It's ... everybody's asking us," he said. "We just want to keep things to ourselves."

The 29-year-old's baby is due sometime in 2011. In addition to her inevitable awards season appearances, Portman has several movies coming out in the new year, including "No Strings Attached" with Ashton Kutcher, "Your Highness" opposite Zooey Deschanel and James Franco, and summer blockbuster "Thor."

Portman's happy news comes at the same time as other romantic celebrity announcements including Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz's stepping out publicly as a couple and the engagements of LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian and Ginnifer Goodwin and Joey Kern.

As the mystery around Teena Marie's sudden death unravels, it appears a seizure may have played a role in the singer's passing.

The late R&B vet was found dead in her home by her daughter the day after Christmas. TMZ reports that Marie might have suffered a grand mal seizure while taking a nap on Sunday afternoon. Marie's daughter reportedly checked in on her at 1 p.m. and she was fine. However, when her daughter checked in on her at 3 p.m., Marie was unresponsive. Marie also suffered a grand mal seizure last month and had reportedly insisted on having someone nearby when she went to sleep.

Illegal drugs appear to have been ruled out as a culprit. According to TMZ, law enforcement officials failed to find any illegal drugs that may have contributed to the songstress' unexpected death. Toxicology tests and an autopsy are slated to be performed later this week.

Marie had also battled an addiction to prescription pain medication in the past. According to The Associated Press, the singer became addicted to Vicodin for a year after the death of former flame and musical mentor Rick James in 2004.

Marie, born Mary Christine Brockert, shot to fame in the late 1970s when she signed to the storied Motown label. A Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist who penned music in addition to boasting some dynamic pipes, Marie built a reputation as one of the strongest voices in R&B and soul music. She was known for hits like "Lovergirl, "Square Biz" and "Ooo La La La" and released 13 albums throughout her 30-year career.

"The enduring influence of Teena's inspirational, trailblazing career could only have been made possible through her brilliant songwriting, showmanship and high-energy passion, which laid the groundwork for the future generations of R&B, hip-hop, and soul," Gene Rumsey, chief label officer of Marie's last label, Concord Music Group, said in a statement.

Fantasia Concert, Few Other Events Canceled Due To East Coast Blizzard

'Broadway shows seldom shut down,' Elisa Shevitz of the Broadway League says.
By Terri Schwartz

Flights might be canceled, the subway may be delayed and the East Coast might be buried under a foot of snow, but the spirit of Broadway lives on. Elisa Shevitz, director of communications for the Broadway League, told MTV News that Broadway shows will go on as scheduled.

Because of the snow, some attendees who had already purchased tickets may be unable to attend those shows, which means some last-minute hard-to-get seats might be available for more popular shows.

Those in the city looking for something to do could potentially snag a seat up front for their favorite Broadway show, although Mondays are normally dark for many Broadway productions anyway. But considering subways are delayed and New York City streets are hard for cars and pedestrians to navigate, that probably means a longer commute than usual.

The League won't know how ticket sales were affected by the blizzard until they calculate their weekly grosses at the end of the week. "Broadway shows seldom shut down," Shevitz said. "The show goes on. That's the nature of our business."

There haven't been any reported major concerts cancellations either, but that might be because there weren't any major concerts scheduled. Prince is performing December 29 at Madison Square Garden, Passion Pit is playing at the Wellmont Theatre in New Jersey on December 30 and 31, and Phish aren't performing at the Garden until December 30 and January 1.

Fantasia's performance at the Beacon Theatre was postponed Monday (December 27) due to the weather, with the rescheduled show to be announced at a later date. A couple of smaller concerts at venues like the Mercury Lounge were canceled as well.

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain't a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood's 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey's earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

"Avatar" creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The "Single Ladies" superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop's Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood's 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

Teena Marie's Influence Found In Mary J. Blige, Hip-Hop, More

Late soul veteran paved the way for several of today's hitmakers.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

R&B great Teena Marie died over the weekend, but her enduring legacy can be found in the legions of soul stars who followed in her footsteps.

Marie joined the iconic Motown label in the late '70s and spent the next three decades building a reputation as a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist with a gift for penning lyrics and belting with soulful abandon. Her influence — from her top-flight musicianship to her pioneering image as a white, female R&B artist — can be found in many of today's hitmakers.

Mary J. Blige
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has pointed to Marie as an early influence when the budding superstar was coming up in her scrappy Yonkers, New York, neighborhood. "Tina Mari inspired me vocally as a child. Her songs I sang in the mirror with a hair brush. I'm so hurt," she tweeted on Sunday. "I'll love u forever Tina Mari. Portuguese Love, Casanova Brown, Square Biz, I need your lovin, all of your music will live forever through me. In my heart she's Tina, So rest in peace Tina, i love u. Every girl that grew up in the hood , with her blasting through the windows, Cars and radio waves can Feel me."

Faith Evans
Like Marie, former Bad Boy singer Faith Evans boasts a bold voice and had a headline-making relationship with a labelmate and music icon. Marie hooked up with Motown funk architect Rick James early in her career and would go on to spark a romance with the R&B great. James also served as a mentor to Marie, and the two teamed up for memorable collaborations such as James' Street Songs jam "Fire and Desire." In addition to churning out soulful hits with Bad Boy, Evans is known for marrying Brooklyn MC Notorious B.I.G. soon after meeting her charismatic labelmate. Marie even commented on the similarities between the two vocalists in the bio for the soul legend's 2009 album, Congo Square, which featured their collabo "Can't Last a Day."

"I've always loved Faith and her vocal style. She reminds me of me. Her correlation with Biggie — having a career with him and without him — reminds me of me and Rick," she said. "I feel like she's a younger me. Of the younger ladies, she's the one I love most."

Alicia Keys
Marie was also a masterful musician, often manning everything from the keyboards to guitar on her albums and heading behind the boards as a producer. She helped establish a blueprint for female R&B stars who are actively involved in various aspects of the production process, such as pianist and producer Alicia Keys, who tweeted after Marie's death, "God bless Teena Marie & her Family!Sending Blessings &prayers I was jus sayin tht fire & desire is 1 of the most beautifully performd songs!"

Pink
Marie's race was somewhat controversial when she first debuted on Motown as a white woman belting soul-stirring R&B. Her picture was left off the album packaging her first LP, and many fans assumed Lady T was another new black artist making her mark in the R&B scene. However, she was ultimately accepted because of her undeniable talent and conviction in her voice. She has paved the way for many contemporary artists such as Joss Stone and Pink, who initially hit the scene with an R&B-tinged sound. After hearing of Marie's death, Pink re-tweeted a missive from Go-Go's bassist Kathy Valentine that read, "THIS SUCKS-- heard that Teena Marie passed away. RIP. she was an original and one of a kind. sad."

As Marie told Essence in 2009, "I'm a black artist with white skin. At the end of the day you have to sing what's in your own soul."

Hip-Hop
While she made her name as a soul veteran, Marie's music has popped up in hip-hop cuts from many of the game's finest lyricists. Marie's 1981 jam "Square Biz" was revamped for rap supergroup the Firm's (Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, Nature, Cormega) 1997 single "Firm Biz," and Mase reworked the track's jocular bass line for the Harlem World album cut "Love U So." The chorus for the Fugees' 1996 smash "Fu-Gee-La" features similar crooning to Marie's hit "Ooo La La La" from the 1988 album Naked to the World.

Even hip-hop stars who may not have reimagined Marie's catalog for their own hits, such as Game, Big Boi and ?uestlove, recalled Marie's influence and legacy on Twitter.

Natalie Portman has had one of the biggest years of her career in 2010, but it looks like 2011 is going to be even bigger. Portman is engaged to her boyfriend, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and the two are expecting their first child, according to People.

The two met during production of "Black Swan," where Millepied acted as choreographer and Portman's onscreen dance partner, and the two started dating in early 2010. This will be the first marriage and first child for Portman.

(Check out photos of the happy couple.)

When Millepied spoke to Details magazine in June about Portman, he said he was "blown away" by her acting abilities and that she was "amazing to watch." But he did add that the two of them were trying to keep their relationship private. "It's ... everybody's asking us," he said. "We just want to keep things to ourselves."

In addition to her exciting personal news, 2011 is also looking bright professionally. Portman is nominated for her third Golden Globe for "Black Swan," her first nomination for a leading role. She is likely to also be nominated for her first Oscar in a leading role and is one of the front-runners to win it. She also has three big films headed to theaters: the romantic comedy "No Strings Attached," the medieval drug comedy "Your Highness" and the latest Marvel film, "Thor."

Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year's Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way.

She tweeted over the weekend: "Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM."

The Mother Monster didn't reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. "This is so darling!" she wrote. "You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!"

Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year's Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. "I think I'm gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo," she said of her plans six months ago. "I've been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it's finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don't. I write music every day."

Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs, what she plans to announce on New Year's Eve is a mystery, but we're sure her fans are counting down the moments.

Gaga recently shared that the album will be her "most innovative." A single is expected in February, and the album will follow shortly thereafter.

"[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats," Gaga said. "I think that lyrically this album is more poetic ... It's really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they're funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster."

Stephen Dorff Says Jack Nicholson Will Love 'Somewhere'

'I think he'll identify with it so much,' Dorff says about his friend and onetime co-star.

Ever since they shared screen time in the 1997 heist flick "Blood and Wine," actors Stephen Dorff and Jack Nicholson have remained close friends. Their relationship may not necessarily be "bromance" territory, but it's close enough that Dorff has shared his career ups and downs with the Oscar winner, and asked for his advice over the years. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently to talk about his critically acclaimed new film "Somewhere" — a role that he called the most challenging of his career — he said he thinks the flick is one Nicholson will really enjoy.

"I think he's going to really love this movie because to me it's a film that isn't made anymore today," Dorff explained. "It's such a character piece and I think he'll identify with it so much.

Dorff revealed that he already got a big thumbs-up from Nicholson after "Somewhere" took home the top prize at Italy's Venice Film Festival in September.

"After we won Venice, I remember telling him how excited I was," he recalled. "And he's like, 'Way to go, Dorff!' "

We then brought up the fact that Nicholson has taken several actors under his wing over the years — pointing out to Dorff that the Hollywood legend had taken an interest in "Mad Men" actress January Jones when she was first starting out.

"Well, he takes an interest in a lot of women, let's be honest," Dorff responded with a chuckle. "He definitely took me under his wing. I think it's rare for Jack to take a young guy under his wing — he's not hanging out with too many guys.

"He did do that with Sean Penn and he's definitely given me great advice over the years," Dorff added. "I always feel like I have him as a friend and he'll show up if he can. And he's always been my favorite actor, so for me, he's a friend, and it's nice to get a little starstruck still. It keeps me remembering who I am and where I am, and Jack's still somebody that makes me a little nervous."

If Dorff has his way, he and his buddy Jack will take their friendship to the big screen via a comedy the younger actor is hoping to make with Adam Sandler's production company.

"It's a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France," Dorff told the UK's Independent newspaper last month. "We're not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and they've already bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I'll turn that into a script and I'll go and tell Jack. ... And I'll get Sony to give him his $15 million and then we'll go and make the movie — because he likes money."

Check out everything we've got on "Somewhere."

Teena Marie's sudden death is hitting many of the late R&B veteran's friends and family hard, including her onetime mentee-turned-rock star Lenny Kravitz.

In a video posted on the rocker's YouTube channel, Kravitz, looking sullen in a dark hoodie, reveals that he woke up in Paris to the news of Marie's passing and opens up about her generosity and assistance when he was starting his career as a teen.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Teena. She took me in when I was around 16. I was just a musician on the street. I was living from pillar to post. She took me in, she gave me a bedroom, she fed me, she cooked for me, she took care of me. She gave me instruments to play, she took me to all her recording sessions. She took me to concerts, she nurtured me and helped me to become who I am," Kravitz says. He added that although he hadn't publicly discussed their relationship before now and lost touch in the years before her death, he's still grateful for everything she did for him in those early years.

"I've never really talked much about it in depth, but I would not be here. She changed my life, not only as an artist, but as a person who truly loved me for who I was. We'd been out of contact for the last few years, but I just want to say, Teena, that I will always love and respect you," he says. "Thank you for being my friend. Thank you, Father, for the life of Teena Marie."

The "Again" singer also sent condolences to Marie's loved ones and touted the late songstress' many skills.

"I just want to send all my love and respect out to the family and I just want to say Teena Marie was a treasure, was a genius," he says. "Composer, arranger, singer, musician, unique, underrated by far."

Kravitz is one of many celebs who have paid tribute to the late star, who was found dead in her California home on Sunday. Swizz Beatz recently tweeted, "R.I.P TO ONE OF THE BEST VOICES OF MUSIC TEENA MARIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" before announcing that he would push back his weekly Monster Monday release in honor of Marie.

Missy Elliott tweeted, "My Prayers go out to Teena Marie's family. Teena created music that is Timeless! Songs sung with soul and conviction a True LEGEND!"

Fashion mogul Kimora Lee Simmons wrote, "RIP to the legendary Ms Teena Marie. Luv u always! We'll celebrate + sing in your memory!"

A Tribe Called Quest MC Q-Tip reminisced on Twitter about how Marie's music touched another late star, Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay, who loved the soul great's rendition of "If I Were a Bell." He also urged rising soul stars to pick up Marie's torch, typing, "hopefully a young singer can take this blueprint she left. RIP."

During "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" special, Avril Lavigne will unveil her brand-new single "What the Hell." However, before she debuts any new music, fans can listen to the Canadian singer's signature yodel from her 2002 hit "I'm With You" on Rihanna's new drinking anthem, "Cheers (Drink to That)."

In a Q&A session with Entertainment Weekly, Lavigne spoke about the celebratory party track, admitting that the Barbadian songstress has some great vocal chops.

"It was really exciting because 'I'm With You' is one of my favorite songs that I've done, I always love performing it," the punky popster admitted. "And I think Rihanna's awesome, she has great songs, she's a really great singer, so yeah I was excited. I think it's really cool."

When MTV News spoke to Rihanna about "Cheers (Drink to That)" in November, the red-headed star told us that the cut is one of her favorites off her latest release, Loud. "I love that song," she gushed. "That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating. It gives you a great feeling inside like you want to go out and have a drink. ... People can't wait for the weekend."

When asked why the she didn't just ask Lavigne to come into the studio to re-record the song's signature yodel, Rihanna explained, "I asked the same thing, but when I heard the track, it was already embedded in the music, so the producers already had it that way."

As for Avril's own celebratory music, the 26-year-old singer/songwriter described her new single as "more pop and uptempo and kind of reminiscent of my old stuff." The songstress also confessed that her next album, Goodbye Lullaby — due in stores March 8 — will be "more stripped and raw and a little deeper."

When Demi Lovato checked herself into a treatment center for "emotional and physical issues" in October, the Disney starlet was forced to check out early from her joint "Camp Rock" tour with the Jonas Brothers. But the teen star is determined to hit the road once again to promote a new album in 2011, according to The Associated Press.

In an article about concert promoters' plans to make ticket prices more affordable in 2011, the AP revealed that Lovato's camp have confirmed that the pop star's plans for a solo 2011 tour to promote a new album are still on track.

When speaking about the high ticket prices, the 18-year-old starlet said, "I have best friends that aren't in the industry and are dealing with just buying groceries and things like that, so I want to do my part."

Back in November, a rep for Lovato explained that the singer/actress was disappointed that she couldn't wrap up the Jonas Brothers tour, saying, "[Demi] regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future." While Lovato pulled out from that tour with six scheduled days left, the star was not replaced for the remaining set of shows in South America.

Things seem to be looking up for the teen sensation. Over the weekend, Lovato was spotted spending time with her family at a restaurant near her treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois. In addition to her family bonding, the Disney actress has reportedly come to a settlement regarding the altercation between her and dancer Alex Welch, whom she allegedly punched.

Lindsay Lohan Inspires New Comedy 'Dogs In Pocketbooks'

Screenwriter Charles Casillo has hired heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw to star as a 'bratty movie goddess ... in trouble with the law.'

Lindsay Lohan's troubled life and recent scandals don't necessarily seem particularly funny, but screenwriter Charles Casillo apparently is aiming to put a comedic spin on the actress's trials in the new film "Dogs in Pocketbooks." The New York Post reports that Casillo has chosen heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw, in her first Hollywood film role, to play the Lohan-esque character at the center of his movie.

The writer told the Post that Shaw will portray a "bratty movie goddess in and out of rehab, in trouble with the law, and hounded by greedy agents, predatory paparazzi, off-the-wall stalkers and crazed media." TMZ pointed out that the only Lohan-related aspect missing from this picture are "scheming, sponging parents whose lives derail their child," although that might take away from some of the flick's comedic value. The film is set to start shooting in New York and Los Angeles in February.

Casillo emphasized to the Post that "Dogs in Pocketbooks" is "in no way mean-spirited toward Lindsay," adding, "It's the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past. It's more of a satire about the crazy people around her and the situations they generate. It satirizes the obsession with modern celebrity."

Though Shaw has not acted in a feature film before, she is well known for her modeling career — including campaigns for Bottega Veneta, Escada and Lord & Taylor — and dating Jeff Goldblum. She also is the daughter of famous 1970s kidnapping victim Patty Hearst. Casillo said he spent a lot of time trying to find the right woman to play the big-screen version of Lohan, and that Shaw is perfect for the part.

"She's one of the few supermodels who can actually act," he insisted. "She's smart, well-read, charming and very beautiful. We looked at a lot of actresses for this role, and I was really knocked out." The fact that she knows what it's like to be a pursued celebrity probably only helped as well, considering she is the heir to the William Randolph Hearst fortune.

The film also has already cast "Dynasty" actress Joan Collins as the main character's agent. The veteran star told the Post, "The script is a hoot — a satire on the crazed hysteria surrounding show-biz celebrities. I'm playing an aggressive, sexy, powerful woman. For a change."

This month, Lohan has been involved in a scandal where a woman who worked at the rehab facility at which the actress was staying accused her of assault, though charges have now been dropped. She also was recently replaced by Malin Akerman as the star of the Linda Lovelace biopic "Inferno" because Lohan was not going to be out of rehab in time to shoot the movie.

Natalie Portman, Ginnifer Goodwin and Hugh Hefner aren't the only ones who had some romantic luck over the long Christmas weekend. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz cozied up in southwestern England while taking a break from filming their upcoming movie, "Dream House."

British newspaper News of the World published photos of Craig and Weisz holding hands in the snowy countryside of Dorset and then walking into a pub together. A customer told the paper that "they were clinging to each other like honeymooners. The chemistry was obvious."

Another onlooker said they "looked like a romantic couple in a film. They were laughing and chatting and hanging on to each other's words and stopping to take photos of each other." The couple were also reported to have shared a cottage hideaway.

Sparks easily could have started flying on the set of "Dream House," which stars Craig and Weisz as a married couple. The supernatural thriller takes a turn for the worse when the couple move with their two daughters to a quiet New England town, and they find out their new home was the site of a murder that claimed the life of a young mother and her two children. Naomi Watts also stars in the film as a neighbor with close ties to the deceased family.

In November, Weisz split from "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky, whom she was with for nine years. Meanwhile, Craig parted ways with his producer girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell earlier this year.

The Game Robbed While Christmas Shopping

The rapper claims that he had valuables stolen from a friend's car while they visited an L.A.-area mall on Christmas Eve.

It wasn't exactly Yuletide blessings over at the Game's house during the holidays. The Los Angeles rapper claims that he was robbed on Christmas Eve. He vented his frustrations via Twitter, saying robbers relieved him and a friend of a luxury travel bag, jewelry and cash while his associate's car was parked in valet outside of a local mall.

"So, heres my day: tried 2 do last minute shoppin 4 da kids & valet stole a Louis Duffle out @avanterose's car & we 2 chains & $75,000 short," The Game wrote in several messages. "So police come & guess who get patted down ? Yea, US !!! then they tell us da palmtree was blocking the crime scene on the tape."

According to the rapper, he's going to search for justice by his own means. He threatened the Topanga Mall Nordstrom valet drivers with an offer to deliver them gifts after the holiday.

The Game, however, noted that he and his associate are both on probation, so they couldn't properly voice their displeasure with the valet employees while police were present.

Last month, the Game attempted to reconcile with former mentor 50 Cent once again.

The Compton native reached out to the G-Unit head honcho via Twitter about rejoining the crew populated by Fif, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. (Young Buck, like Game, was ousted by 50 for being disloyal.)

"@50cent Aye n---a, get on twitter & let's get this sh-- movin !!! G-G-G-G- well, you know the rest," Game's note to 50 read. "@50cent All it take is 'ONE PHONE CALL'! U call me, I call BUCK, tell Banks holla at Yayo & dat puts HIP HOP @ OUR MERCY! #UknowUcdisN---A. Anybody don't like it, F--- YALL!!!"

50 questioned Game's sincerity and dismissed the olive branch, though, saying the rapper's motive was to promote his long-delayed release, The R.E.D. Album.
