Snooki Is MTV News' #4 Woman Of The Year

The 'Jersey Shore' star with the towering pouf invaded the pop-culture landscape in 2010, and not even a U.S. senator could resist.

It's hard to believe that just a year ago the world was unaware of a pint-size, pouf-haired firecracker named Snooki. What a sad life we all led, in those pre-"Jersey Shore" days, before we learned that beats need beating and tanning is less beauty regimen than a way of life.

At the center of it all has been Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi. She's the loud, kind-hearted and insanely quotable engine driving the reality series toward its status as the most-watched show in MTV's 27-year history. And in 2010, she was everywhere, from "The Tonight Show" to magazine spreads to "Saturday Night Live" and "South Park" spoofs. Even President Obama dropped her name on TV. But ubiquitous appearances across the entertainment spectrum don't tell the full story of how thoroughly Snooki has invaded the pop-culture landscape.

(They're more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!)

But invade it she has, and for that, we are truly thankful. That's why we've named Snooki MTV News' #4 Woman of the Year.

2010 Highlights: We'd say the year began on a high note for Snickers, but the ensuing months were no letdown. The show became January's #1 original cable series among 12- to 34-year-olds and the season-one finale ranked #1 for the day across all television competition in the demo. Before the month was over, MTV had renewed the show for a second season.

A day after the renewal news, Snooki landed a spot as the network's guest correspondent for the Grammy Awards, where she rubbed elbows with industry A-listers and showed that her social skills most definitely extend from the nightclub to the red carpet.

"Do you get a lot of, like, girls?" she asked Justin Bieber.

Snooki had arrived. Her next stop was Miami Beach. She and her castmates escaped the cold Jersey beaches for the sun-drenched nightlife of Miami, where they began filming the show's second season. As we discovered when new episodes began airing in July, fame had not changed Miss Polizzi: She was the same tell-it-like-it-is-but-like-no-one-else diva we first met. She loved pickles and dancing, tanning and occasionally fighting. And beneath that artificial tan, she was just an incredibly sweet girl who was snookin' for love.

She also caused something of a political dustup when she spoke out hilariously against Obama's heath care bill, saying, "[Senator John] McCain would never put a 10 percent tax on tanning, because he's pale and he would probably want to be tan. Obama doesn't have that problem, obviously."

In one of the year's more bizarre moments, McCain took to Twitter ... and came to Snooki's defense. "U r right, I would never tax your tanning bed!" he wrote. "Pres Obama's tax/spend policy is quite The Situation. But I do rec wearing sunscreen!"

Ah, political discourse in 2010! But Snooki isn't heading to Capitol Hill anytime soon. She's having too much success doing her "Shore" thing. The season-two debut notched MTV's best premiere numbers since 2002, building up to a finale watched by 6.1 million viewers.

Yet Snooki, it seems, is just getting started. She's already taped the third season of "Jersey Shore," which is set to premiere in January. She's penning her first novel, called "A Shore Thing," which Simon & Schuster is publishing that same month. And she'll be ringing in 2011 as part of MTV's "New Year's Bash," during which she'll actually be stuffed inside a ball that will be lowered in Times Square. As she told her nearly 1 million Twitter followers, "I haven't rocked the poof in months, it feels. So I've decided to bring in 2011 with the biggest poof ever. Who's with me?"

The world, Snooki, the world.

Drake Is MTV News' #4 Man Of The Year

Lauded debut album and nonstop touring schedule keep Drizzy in the public eye in 2010.

Drake delivered on his promise from the year before to earn a second consecutive slot on our Man of the Year countdown. The Toronto lyricist followed up his star-making So Far Gone mixtape with an album that was equally celebrated, the platinum-selling Thank Me Later.

In addition to his recorded triumph, Drake scored onstage as well, piling up loads of buzzworthy moments in the past 12 months, from joining Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium to inviting Eminem to rock alongside him during his OVO Festival. Not to mention the former "Degrassi" actor helped steer the Cash Money ship while Lil Wayne was behind bars. For all that and more, we're thanking Drizzy now.

(They're more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!)

2010 Highlights: Drake started the year with a bang when it was announced that he, Weezy, Eminem and Kanye West would perform at the Grammys. He quickly followed that news with word that he would go on an eco-friendly tour, his second in a matter of months, this time with Francis and the Lights and hometown ally K-Os.

In March, Drake made the transition from mixtape phenom to legit solo artist with the debut of his first official single, the rollicking "Over," which premiered on his personal blog. With Weezy's prison sentence set to begin, Drake proclaimed, "You won't even notice [Lil Wayne is] gone. Promise."

The Anthony Mandler-directed "Over" video arrives, further helping Drake move from underground act to full-fledged star. Toronto titans Justin Bieber and Drake then joined forces at Canada's Juno Awards.

The blockbuster "Find Your Love" served Drake up as a ladies' man over the Kanye West-produced track. Drizzy wasn't afraid to show off his adolescent side during his appearance on "When I Was 17," which was the highest-rated episode of the first season.

In May, just a month before his debut was scheduled to arrive, a series of songs from Thank Me Later leaked online, including "Unforgettable" and "Fireworks," featuring Alicia Keys.

Just days before his debut hit stores, Drake held court during a star-studded listening session where media outlets virtually coronate the upstart with a slew of slobbering reviews.

The "Best I Ever Had" star's expected attendance at an outdoor concert in Manhattan causes a riot as fans brawl before the show was eventually canceled; the scene was captured in the MTV documentary "Drake: Better Than Good Enough."

In July, Drake took flight after scoring a lucrative endorsement deal with Virgin, which added to his deals with Sprite, BlackBerry and Kodak.

The Toronto star closed the summer with a homecoming concert for the ages, as he brought Jay-Z and Eminem to town for his inaugural OVO Fest. As soon as he closed out one tour, however, Drake jumped right back on the road with Tyga for his Light Dreams & Nightmares jaunt, where along the way he would bring out J. Cole and Jay-Z and conclude things with a newly freed Lil Wayne in Las Vegas.

Add to that a rousing VMA performance, a Twitter marriage and divorce with Nicki Minaj and his first #1 record -- his "What's My Name?" duet with Rihanna -- not to mention a placement on our Hottest MCs in the Game list and a highly anticipated R&B mixtape and sophomore album, and it's easy to see why Drake was one of the year's biggest acts.

We'll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News' Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below!

'Tron Legacy' Star Olivia Wilde Recalls 'Heart-Pounding' Fight Scene

"I was slammed back up against my chair, just overwhelmed by how awesome this movie turned out to be," Olivia Wilde told us about watching "Tron Legacy" for the first time.

It's hard to disagree agree with the 26-year-old actress, who plays the bob-haired Quorra in the film. "Tron" is easily the most visually arresting film of the year, almost an art film made on a $170 million budget and filled with a handful of kick-ass fight sequences. The high-tech fisticuffs come courtesy of 87eleven, the stunt team behind brawls in "300," "Iron Man 2" and the "Matrix" films.

Of all the throw-downs, though, Wilde counts one in particular as her favorite. It comes late in the film, takes place in a computer-generated hotspot called the End of the Line club and pits Wilde and co-star Garrett Hedlund against a slew of bad guys.

"It's choreography we worked on for four months," she said. "They showed us the choreography, and Garrett and I looked at each other and were like, 'That's not going to happen! We're not going to be able to do that. That's crazy stuff.' And four months later, there we were doing it and enjoying it — really loving it.

"When I saw the finished product of that scene, it's so intense and beautiful and heart-pounding," she added. "I was so proud."

Not only was Wilde proud, the entire production gave her the confidence to know that she could accomplish far more in front of the camera than she ever suspected. "It kind of proved to me I could really go outside my comfort zone," she said. "This movie was the biggest physical transformation I've ever made. Also, a departure from my personality, more than any other character."

The mixtape game took a shot to the heart a few years ago when DJ Drama's office was raided by the feds. Artists increasingly opted to make mixtapes that were essentially albums, projects produced without help from DJs and comprised mostly of original material.

But slowly Gangsta Grillz began populating blogs, the same way they used to populate the streets, and those sites served as the new Burkinas. In the last 12 months, the mixtape circuit has never been healthier — just look at Dram still putting out his trademark rap heat and getting his slow jam on, pushing collections by the likes of Chris Brown, among other R&B stars.

DJ Teknikz helped Travis Porter ink a deal with Jive Records. And Bigga Rankin scored an exec position with Young Jeezy's CTE. Then there's DJ Holiday and DJ Scream: both spin doctors break acts like Bo Jackson snapped bats. Meanwhile, DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar have become nearly ubiquitous with their onslaught of street albums. Pay attention, as the Mixtape Daily team continues our year-end awards by saluting the Top DJs of 2010.

Earlier this year, Selena Gomez, "Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester and "Glee" star Cory Monteith romped around Europe shooting their 2011 flick "Monte Carlo." The three co-stars all happen to be singers as well.

"I remember Leighton and I would sing on set on 'Monte Carlo,' and Cory would be like, 'I just left "Glee," ' " Gomez recalled to MTV News over the weekend at Z100's Jingle Ball. "And then he'll sing with us too."

She added that she'd love the chance to work with Monteith again soon.

"He loves singing," she dished. "And I'd love to sing with him one day, because he's got a great voice."

When she spoke to us about it earlier this year, Gomez said she was "thrilled" about the film, which revolves around three friends who go to Monte Carlo after one of them is mistaken for a British heiress, and revealed a bit about what fans can expect from her character.

"I play Grace. She's from Texas, and she's a girl who saved up money to go to Paris for the summer with her best friend," she said of the flick, which also stars Katie Cassidy. "And lots of drama goes on, and it's fun."

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Reflects On Memories Tour, Plans More Shows In 2011

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 03:52 AM PST

'To see 5,500 people singing along to every last word through every song was incredibly validating,' he says of Pinkerton performances.
By Matt Elias

With Weezer set to hit Boston on Tuesday night (December 14) for the next stop on the band's Memories Tour, playing The Blue Album one night and Pinkerton the next, frontman Rivers Cuomo chatted with MTV News about revving up the Weezer time machine.

For Cuomo, the shows are an "emotional, cathartic experience," especially during the Pinkerton set.

"The last time we played all of those songs, they went over like a lead balloon," Cuomo said. "And I just remember that feeling of just total rejection. And then to see 5,500 people singing along to every last word through every song on the album, even the really difficult ones, was incredibly validating for me."

Just 10 years ago, Cuomo didn't want to play any Pinkerton songs; it was just too painful. But he's since embraced the songs, thanks to the legion of vocal Weezer fans who pleaded for them over the years.

"Now we get to give them the whole thing, and it's a real joy for us," Cuomo beamed.

It's fitting that his favorite song to play on this tour comes from Pinkerton, a song called "Across the Sea." Cuomo described it as "the most personal and intimate and the most 'me' of anything I've ever written." So when he saw the audience respond to it so well on their first night of the tour, it was a huge moment for him. They might not have seen it under his T-shirt, but Cuomo said he had goose bumps all over during the performance.

And while Cuomo clued us into the Blue/Pinkerton tour idea on the set of Weezer's "Memories" video back in August, the thought started way before then and way smaller.

"I started thinking about doing just one show to commemorate the reissue of Pinkerton," Cuomo said. "The album was just reissued last month, and I think it was probably like in February of this year that I started thinking, 'Oh, you know, when we reissue the album, we should probably do a show in L.A. to commemorate the reissue.' And that turned into, 'Well, why don't we do The Blue Album too?' And 'Why don't we take it around the country and do as many markets as we can?' "

Even though the Memories Tour was only slated for a handful of cities (L.A., San Francisco, Boston, New York and Chicago), Weezer's 2011 plans should keep the nostalgia ride going much further.

"I'm sure Weezer will just keep touring, and I have a feeling that some of those shows will be these Memories shows, Blue and Pinkerton, and some of the shows will be more like greatest hits, depending on the show," Cuomo said.

Are you happy to hear that Weezer will keep bringing out their early hits on tour? Let us know in the comments!

Crystal Bowersox Hopes Fans Can Handle The Truth Of 'Famer's Daughter'

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 03:52 AM PST

'American Idol' runner-up releases her hard-fought debut album Tuesday.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

Following the "American Idol" finale, runner-up Crystal Bowersox made it abundantly clear that she had no plans to carry on the tradition of releasing a shiny, happy debut album. And it turns out she was a woman of her word.

Because her post-"Idol" bow, Farmer's Daughter, which dropped Tuesday (December 14), is anything but traditional, at least not in the Seacrest-ian sense of the word. Of the 12 songs on the disc, she wrote eight (and co-wrote two more) and worked exclusively with not only producer David Bendeth — who's twiddled knobs for the likes of Paramore and As I Lay Dying — but a team of crack studio musicians, including Jeff Kazee, Tommy Byrnes and Chuck Burgi, who have logged time with Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and the Blue Oyster Cult, to name just a few.

It's a soulful, crackling album, full of the kind of big vocals (and even bigger ideals) that won her a legion of fans during her run on "Idol." In short, it is very much the kind of album only she could have made — so long as she stuck to her guns. And for additional proof of all this, fans need look no further than the first single, the solemn and scathing title track. In it, Bowersox details her tumultuous — and abusive — relationship with her mother (sample line: "Honor thy mother/ And father too/ But I know there ain't no way in hell that God mentioned you") over little more than a spare guitar line. Not surprisingly, the folks at Jive didn't want it to be the first song out of the chute — they were angling for "Hold On," a song co-written by Kara DioGuardi and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger — but Bowersox was adamant. And, in the end, she won.

"It wasn't necessarily a battle, win or lose, it was more of just convincing the label that putting 'Farmer's Daughter' out as the first single was the best choice, as far as representing me as an artist and a songwriter," she told MTV News. " 'Hold On' is a great song — it's the safe choice — and I didn't want to just do the cookie-cutter, safe choice. Nothing to discredit the song, I gave it my best shot, I hope I did Kara and Chad proud, but as far as a first single goes, 'Farmer's Daughter' was the right choice, and I had to slowly get the label to agree with that, and they did."

And after getting them to agree, Bowersox had to prepare herself for the fact that, for the foreseeable future, at least, she'd be performing "Farmer's Daughter" — and airing her family's dirty laundry — in front of millions while doing the promo rounds. But, once again, she didn't flinch.

"Well, it is a darker song, it's just ... bluntly and brutally honest, though. Sometimes you can't handle the truth; I'm OK with it," she smiled. "When I wrote the song is when all of those emotions left me. I don't carry them around in my heart. It's not part of me as a person ... so every time I sing the song, it floods back in, which gives passion for the performance, but when the song's over, I'm back to smiling, happy, bubbly me."

So while she didn't win "American Idol," Bowersox can look back on everything that's happened since as one gigantic victory. She made her album her way. She fought the label to get her single heard first, and now, she can sing her demons right out of her life. The past is the past, after all. With Farmer's Daughter, Bowersox is pushing hard and heavy into the future.

"It was a dark time for all of us growing up ... but I think in the long run, it's being honest and telling our story," she said. "The song's a healing song ... and once you start to talk about any issues you're having, these childhood issues, you can begin to heal."

Lil Wayne Is MTV News' #5 Man Of The Year

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:52 AM PST

Eight-month jail stint couldn't keep Weezy from becoming a social-media king, ruling the airwaves and having his biggest year as a CEO.
By Jayson Rodriguez

OK, so, maybe Lil Wayne isn't a traditional candidate for a Man of the Year list. The Cash Money rhyme spitter didn't even spit that many new rhymes in 2010. Weezy was sent to jail in March for eight months on a gun rap and was unable to record new material, save for a phone freestyle he delivered for a remix to Drake's "Light Up." But prior to his imprisonment, the New Orleans MC worked harder than Tupac in his last days. At one point, Lil Wayne actually shot nine music videos (!!!) in one weekend.

But it was his work outside the recording booth where the Young Money Entertainment founder left his real mark over the past 12 months. His star signings Drake and Nicki Minaj fulfilled their potential as both dropped impressive debut albums allowing him to kick up his feet and play the CEO role. And Wayne went viral by signing up for Twitter and launching a blog from behind bars. #FreeWeezy, indeed.

2010 Highlights: In February, Wayne joined Drake, Kanye West and Eminem for a rousing — and highly censored — performance of "Forever" at the Grammys. Hours later, Weezy joined an all-star cast of musicians for the "We Are the World" remake to benefit Haiti earthquake victims. Then, just over a week later, he somehow found the energy to partake in a marathon day of shooting videos in Miami.

Lil Tunechi arrived in the land of Twitter to spread his message of love — then threatened to quit when fans didn't love him back. Sad face.

But life turned around for Lil Wayne in early March when he joined Young Jeezy onstage at Madison Square Garden after an NYC courthouse fire prevented the rapper from beginning his prison sentence. A week after turning himself in, Weezy's rock-leaning effort Rebirth was certified gold.

Wayne arrived online! The jailed rapper started WeezyThanxYou.com, a blog to help him interact with fans while he was confined at Rikers Island.

Diddy visited Lil Wayne in prison; the list of visitors to see the rapper read like a VIP guest list, including Drake, Kanye West and Nicki Minaj.

The hard-working wordsmith phoned an engineer and contributed a verse to Drake's "Light Up," dubbing himself the new Tupac. A month later, a new track by Wayne featuring Drake arrives, "Right Above It," the first release from the rapper's I Am Not a Human Being project, which also earned him a gold plaque.

Holdover material, however, couldn't compete with the real thing: Days after being released from prison, Wayne traveled to Las Vegas to surprise Drake and fans with his first performance since he took the stage with Jeezy.

Nicki Minaj Is MTV News' #5 Woman Of The Year

With her chart-busting Pink Friday debut, slew of collabos and signature style, Minaj became a game-changing force in2010.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

In terms of running things in hip-hop, 2010 can be safely dubbed the year of Young Money. Even though YM general Lil Wayne was locked up for much of the final year of the decade, his protégés carried the camp's flag all the way to the top of charts, with Drake turning out major first-week sales and Lil Twist making his presence known on Twitter and on mixtapes.

But perhaps one of the biggest weapons in the YMCMB arsenal is their bewigged femcee Nicki Minaj, who not only changed the face of the female lyricist but proved she could more than hold her own with the big boys of rap -- no matter what some MCs may say.

2010 Highlights: This time last year, she was a Queens spitter being groomed by Weezy for mainstream dominance, but months later, she was lending her rollicking flow to records by everyone from Usher to Mariah Carey and building monster buzz for her forthcoming debut.

The rap diva entered the year with one of the most coveted co-signs in the game: a stamp of approval from Jay-Z. Hov suggested she drop some lyrics on crooner Robin Thicke's "Shakin' It 4 Daddy," and by February, she was vamping it up with pop superstar Mariah Carey in her crimson-themed romp of a video "Up Out My Face."

Minaj continued to build her presence on R&B joints, lacing Usher's "Lil Freak" with some bi-curious bars and turned up in the video in a two-toned wig and catsuit to seduce a pouty model.

By March, she and Drizzy hit the Madison Square Garden stage for the star-studded New York stop on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour and was hard at work on her debut visual, "Massive Attack."

Although the spitter spent much of 2010 cruising along the road to success, there were a few speed bumps, notably when her mentor Weezy headed to jail and when she decided to ditch Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth Tour. But the most high-profile drama erupted when Brooklyn MC Lil' Kim began accusing the Young Money Barbie of jacking her style without lavishing the appropriate props. While the "How Many Licks?" lyricist was kind of on her own in the Nicki bashing, Minaj handled the smack talk gracefully, calling for "positive energy" among women when she accepted her BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

After batting away rumors that she lip-synched her way through several energetic guest-spot performances at the BET Awards, Minaj proved her solo hitmaking prowess when the Annie Lennox-sampling jam "Your Love" shot to #1. The award nods kept coming, as Minaj picked up a Best New Artist nomination at the MTV Video Music Awards and she didn't let up with the scene-stealing collabos either, pretty much owning Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Friday joint "Monster," despite verses from heavy-hitters Jigga and Rick Ross.

As the drop date for Pink Friday neared, Minaj ramped up her big-deal status, turning out a colorful appearance at the VMA pre-show in September, and assailing the charts with hits like "Right Thru Me" and "Check It Out," which were each accompanied by inventive visuals.

When Friday finally rolled around in November, which featured a rowdy collabo with rap kingpin Eminem and a sexy-girl anthem with Rihanna, Minaj caused a level of consumer pandemonium that rivaled the blowout shopping date, taking over New York City and moving a robust 375,000 units.

By the time her rise to the top was chronicled in the November MTV News documentary "My Time Now," it was clear that everybody, even Regis Philbin, couldn't get enough Minaj.

We'll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News' Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below!

Eminem To Play A Boxer In '8 Mile'-Inspired 'Southpaw'

Detroit MC set to return to the big screen in film written by 'Sons of Anarchy' creator.

Nearly nine years after making his big-screen debut in "8 Mile," Eminem has lined up another film project.

According to Deadline, DreamWorks has picked up "Southpaw," a drama in which Eminem will play a "fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to tragedy."

"Sons of Anarchy" creator/executive producer Kurt Sutter will write the script. Sutter explained that the project is several years in the making, borne from meetings with Eminem and his team, and hearing the rapper open up about his real-life struggles on his recent albums.

"I took meetings with Marshall's producing partners over the past seven years, looking for something to do together," Sutter told Deadline. "I know he's very selective and doesn't do a lot. But he shared so much of his personal struggle in this raw and very honest album [Recovery], one that I connected with on a lot of levels. He is very interested in the boxing genre, and it seemed like an apt metaphor, because his own life has been a brawl."

Sutter said the film will be a kind of continuation of "8 Mile," which garnered Em both critical acclaim and a Best Song Oscar for "Lose Yourself."

"We are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life," he said. "He'll play a world-champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy.

"I love that the title refers to Marshall being a lefty," Sutter continued, "Which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip-hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It's a much harder road for a southpaw than a right-handed boxer."

Sutter is set to begin writing immediately and will reportedly turn in a draft in February. No word on a possible release date or when production may begin.

With Golden Globe nominations on the way Tuesday, the 2010 awards season has officially kicked into high gear. But the Globe nods aren't the first; the American Film Institute and a handful of critics groups have already released their faves.

In looking at overall Best Film/Picture categories, the AFI and the Critics' Choice Movie Awards selected the same nine films: "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," "127 Hours," "The Social Network," "The Town," "Toy Story 3," "True Grit" and "Winter's Bone." AFI recognized "The Kids Are All Right" as its 10th movie in the category, while the Broadcast Film Critics Association selected "The King's Speech." It's worth mentioning that as has been custom for the past few years during awards season, independent films generally garner plenty of nomination love. "Black Swan," "127 Hours," "The Kids Are All Right," "Winter's Bone" and "Rabbit Hole" are the buzzy Indies this season.

With regard to regional critics' picks in the same category, there are emerging patterns for awards-season front-runners. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle all named "The Social Network" as the best film of the year, along with David Fincher as best director.

Speaking of the directing category and the aforementioned critics groups, Fincher will likely compete with four of the following Best Director nominees from the BFCA: Darren Aronofsky, "Black Swan"; Christopher Nolan, "Inception"; Tom Hooper, "The King's Speech"; Danny Boyle, "127 Hours"; and Ethan and Joel Coen, "True Grit."

With regard to acting nods, the field has not been whittled down quite as specifically as the film and director categories. Standouts so far include Colin Firth for "The King's Speech" — named Best Actor by the NY and L.A. critics, as well as a nominee from the BFCA along with Jesse Eisenberg (named Best Actor by the National Board of Review) for "The Social Network" and Jeff Bridges for "True Grit." Other contenders include Aaron Eckhart in "Rabbit Hole," James Franco in "127 Hours" and Ryan Gosling in "Blue Velvet."

The Best Actress category is similarly conflicted thus far, with Natalie Portman ("Black Swan"), Annette Bening ("The Kids Are All Right") and Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone") among the early favorites, but a front-runner has yet to emerge. Other ladies on the short lists: Nicole Kidman in "Rabbit Hole" and Michelle Williams in "Blue Valentine."

These lists add to the recognition already announced by the National Board of Review, the Independent Spirit Awards, the European Film Awards (at which Roman Polanski's "Ghost Writer" was the standout) and the British Independent film awards.

What do you think of this season's awards darlings so far? Let us know your picks in the comments!

'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides': Trailer's Five Coolest Moments

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:30 AM PST

We break down the best scenes, from a first look at Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow with Penélope Cruz to high-adrenaline action.
By Eric Ditzian

"It's a completely different beast," said "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" scribe Terry Rossio of the fourth film in Disney's seafaring franchise.

Not only is the latest installment being described as a stand-alone with regard to plot, one not significantly interwoven with story lines past, but a new director is now in charge (Rob Marshall has replaced three-time helmer Gore Verbinski) and familiar stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are nowhere to be seen.

So yes, the new film represents a break with the past, but "On Stranger Tides" is hardly an unrecognizable creature, as the brand-new trailer makes clear. It's got swashbuckling battles, don't-take-us-too-seriously-this-is-Disney-after-all laughs and, of course, Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow as the hippest cat on the high seas. Here are our picks for the trailer's five coolest moments:

Hello, Penélope
We got our first official look at Penélope Cruz in "Pirates" last week. Now, as we see her swinging a sword, sailing a ship and harassing Jack Sparrow in two languages, we know she's going to be a worthy adversary and love interest for the Captain. Her line reading toward the end of the trailer — "How is it we can never meet without you pointing something at me?" she asks — is a perfect example of how she'll toe the line between adversary and paramour.

Welcome Back, Jack
We missed you, buddy! Though the action takes place in the 1750s, Sparrow is a very 21st-century sort of hero, variously brave or petrified, jokey or focused, as the occasion demands, and self-aware at every turn. He'll fight — zombies, mermaids, evil pirates — but only with devil-may-care style and a keen sense of moral rectitude. His quest here is to locate the Fountain of Youth, as well as to further cement his legacy in the Pirate Hall of Fame.

Blackbeard
Cruz isn't the only new pirate in "Pirates." Played by Ian McShane, Blackbeard is, according to Sparrow, "the pirate all other pirates fear." He also happens to be Cruz's dad and is on the same quest as Jack: find the Fountain of Youth. And according to Blackbeard, either they both succeed or they both fail. "If I don't make it to the Fountain, neither will you," he says.

You Always Get What You Want
A look at Rolling Stones rock god Keith Richards done up in his pirate gear is worth the price of admission, and Disney was kind enough to drop in a few seconds of the guy in the first trailer. Reprising his role as Captain Teague from the previous installment, Richards delivers some weighty advice to his son Jack: "Don't be a fool, Jackie. The Fountain will test you." The guy has been to hell and back again, so perhaps Sparrow should listen to daddy, no?

Fiery Action
With Marshall in the director's chair and new to the world of action-oriented franchise films, some may have worried that "On Stranger Tides" would suffer from a dearth of high-adrenaline exploits. This trailer should disabuse you of that notion. Explosions are unleashed, nasty creatures attack and swords clank at every turn. The flick's May 20 release date can't come soon enough. It's only — sigh — 157 days away.

Check out everything we've got on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

Michael Jackson Asked Album-Cover Artist To Paint Him Before He Died

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:07 AM PST

Kadir Nelson only spoke to Jackson once before the singer's death.
By Gil Kaufman

When it came to putting together Michael, the first posthumous album of material from late King of Pop Michael Jackson, everyone was working with half a playbook. The producers of the singer's first studio album since 2001 had to figure out what the notoriously detail-oriented Jackson would want them to do with the grab bag of songs he was working on at the time of his death.

Even the artist behind the album's iconic cover, a Renaissance-painting-like mash-up of iconic images from throughout Jackson's career, was forced to go on his understanding of what Michael would have approved of.

That artist, Kadir Nelson, sat down with MTV News last week to walk us through the thicket of images on the cover and explain how he came to create the visual summary of the pop icon's solo career.

Nelson said the ball started rolling in 2003, when Michael was working on songs for his Number Ones collection at Marvin's Room, the legendary Los Angeles recording studio founded by R&B great Marvin Gaye in 1975. Jackson saw a pair of paintings Nelson had made chronicling Gaye's life and fell in love with the images.

"As a result of seeing it, he called me one afternoon and he said, 'I really like your Marvin Gaye painting ... I want one, about me ... but I want it bigger.' Because Michael liked things to be big," Nelson said. But, as with so many projects begun by Jackson, after Nelson followed the singer's advice and read the autobiography "Moonwalker" and did some research on the painting that was to hang in Michael's home, other things came up and the project fell through the cracks.

Then, following Jackson's death in June 2009, his longtime friend and now estate co-executor John McClain rang Nelson up and said the gig was back on. "[He said], 'It's time for you to do that painting that Michael wanted you to do,' " Nelson recalled. " 'Don't ask any questions, just do the painting and we'll figure out what to do with it later.' "

The resulting image plays into Jackson's lifelong belief that bigger is better, with a regal Michael staring out in the central image while wearing a prince's Victorian blouse with a high, ruffled collar, a silver-gloved hand placed over his heart and a jewel-encrusted crown hovering over his head. Around that central image are painted nods to everything from such classic videos as "Beat It" and "Thriller" and a spaceship from one of his favorite movies, "E.T." and MTV's Moonman, a reference to the fact that Jackson's videos helped make the channel the force it is today.

The sadness of Jackson's death made Nelson a bit hesitant at first, but he said he realized he was getting a rare second chance to follow through on the abandoned project, so he was quick to say yes. "I did it because I felt that it would be a very important document ... and a tribute to Michael's life," he said of the finished work, titled "The King of Pop."

He described it as a "panoramic celebration of Michael's life, music and career" and said he strode to make it as perfect as possible to match the level of perfection Jackson insisted on in his music and art. "I felt that I owed it to him, to his family, to his fans, to do the best job possible."

Though Nelson only spoke to Jackson that one time in 2003 over the phone, he worked with the singer's brother, Jackie Jackson, on the image over a five month period at the studio where the Michael album was being completed and said that Jackie gave some insight into his sibling's thoughts. When the final image was produced, MJ's brothers Jackie and Marlon Jackson and McClain gave it a thumbs-up and said he did a good job.

Like the video for the first single, the Mark Pellington-directed "Hold My Hand," it's an artistic leap that attempts to tap into Jackson's elusive magic, but Nelson feels like he succeeded.

He considers the final product — his biggest-ever canvas at more than 9 feet wide by 4.5 feet tall — his Sistine Chapel. And like Michelangelo's signature work, Nelson labored long and hard on the painting, putting hours in from August 2009 until January 2010 and then again on and off until October.

What do you think of the finished product? Share your reviews in the comments!

Taylor Swift turns 21 on Monday (December 13), and she is getting some birthday wishes from many of her celebrity pals, who took to Twitter to show some love to the superstar and send her attention in honor of the milestone.

"Hey!! Today is my girlfrannn @taylorswift13's 21st birthday!!!" Paramore leading lady Hayley Williams tweeted. "Holy heck. She's all growed up. So blessed to know her. Tweet her some love!"

Selena Gomez got in on the action too, writing to her pal, "Happy birthday @taylorswift13!!! I love you so much!!"

Katy Perry also tweeted, "@taylorswift13 happy 21st gorgeous!"

Perez Hilton had a shout-out for Ms. Swift, adding a Latino flair to his wishes: "@taylorswift13 ¡Feliz cumpleaños! #HappyBirthdayTaylor."

Swift got her birthday party started early Sunday, when she tweeted about some festivities that were already under way, sharing that her friends were ringing in another year with the singer.

"Snowflakes are flurrying down outside and it's my last day of being 20!" she wrote. "Tonight @caitlinbird and @elizabethhuett knocked on my door — they brought a pizza with a lit 21 candle on it and bday hats. Now I'm dancing around my room alone to @pink's greatest hits cd."

With her birthday so close to Christmas, the singer revealed to MTV News that she was planning to combine the two celebrations for her birthday party this year.

"The plans for the 21st birthday are probably going to be winter-themed. I love winter. I love Christmas," she said. "When I was a little kid and I was growing up, they'd always have a Santa Claus guy show up and take everybody's wishes or what they wanted for Christmas. I'm not gonna do that, but there'll definitely be lots of Christmas-themed things."

Justin Bieber's team is enlisting some of the music industry's biggest stars for his next album. And according to Taio Cruz, working on tracks for the pop star's next album comes with quite a bit of pressure.

"Yes, I am [writing for Justin]," the "Dynamite" singer confirmed to MTV News at Z100's Jingle Ball on Friday. "I was just recently asked to work for Justin Bieber, so that should be good.

"Yeah, he is a big deal," Cruz added. "I don't want to disappoint his fans — they can be angry little 12-year-olds. He's fun. He's young, so we'll keep it in the right arena; just fun, young pop music."

So how did the collaboration between Cruz and Bieber come to be? Cruz explained, "Sometimes the label or someone or management will ask me to write something specifically and they'll give me a few topics, a few things to focus on, and then we come up with ideas."

Not much is known about Bieber's next album, but Justin did share with MTV News in September that it would "probably [come out] fourth quarter next year." "Drake is gonna be on that album; I'm not sure [who else]. I'm gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there," Bieber revealed.

Aside from writing for Bieber, Cruz said that in 2011 he hopes to have a few more radio hits of his own after an impressive 2010.

"I would say next year, just more good songs. Hopefully the fans, and new fans, enjoy the music as much as they are currently," he said. "I've been working with so many amazing people — David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia — and producing more stuff myself, as well. I've got some really, really good songs in the bag."

Gwyneth Paltrow just can't get enough "Glee." The actress-turned-singer, who guest-starred on the hit Fox show last month, is set to reprise her role as McKinley High's free-spirited substitute teacher Holly Holiday in an upcoming episode.

The actress confirmed to "Access Hollywood" that she had signed on for two episodes, and called the TV gig "the best job ever." There's no word yet on when Paltrow's second appearance will air or what tunes the Oscar-winning actress will sing.

During her much-hyped debut "Glee" episode, Paltrow belted the edited version of Cee Lo's "F--- You" (which happens to be MTV News' #5 Song of 2010). She also did a mash-up of Rihanna's smash "Umbrella" and the Gene Kelly classic "Singin' in the Rain" alongside Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison).

When MTV News caught up with the "Country Strong" star, she told us she'd heard through the grapevine that Cee Lo was flattered by her "Glee" cover.

"I have heard from Cee Lo through other people," Paltrow said. "He was incredibly sweet about it. It's embarrassing to think of Cee Lo hearing me sing his song," she laughed.

Asked whether she'd heard from Rihanna yet, Paltrow joked, "No! What the?"

Of course, Gwyneth's "Glee" appearances have won raves, including from show creator Ryan Murphy who spoke to the BBC about casting her. "Gwyneth is a great singer," he said. "She's done it a little bit, but I really want to show it off and show everyone how great she is."

Are you excited to see Gwyneth on "Glee" again? Tell in the comments!

George Clooney, Alicia Keys Declare 'We Want Peace' For Sudan

George Clooney has been using his celebrity to bring attention to the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan for years. Along with his dad, newsman Nick Clooney, he filmed the 2008 TV special "A Journey to Darfur" and now Clooney has teamed with an international coalition of stars to star in a music video for the "We Want Peace" global initiative.

The effort, led by Sudanese hip-hop artist, activist and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal, benefits the Global Initiative for Sudan and also features cameos from Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, billionaire philanthropist Richard Branson, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former U.N. Secretary General and Nobel laureate Kofi Annan.

"The issue has been there for a while, but we're trying to gather support to raise awareness," said Jal about the fears of another genocide and civil war in the country. A teaser for the video features Keys calling out to the "whole wide world" to scream out for peace. The clip features children holding up signs making the plea "We Want Peace," and Jal said it was actually students who were instrumental in helping to alert the world to the genocide in his country.

"If the students [in the anti-genocide coalition] STAND and George Clooney never went down there to bring it up to the public, it would have been worse," he said of the effort launched in 2005 by students at Georgetown University to shed light on the problem of genocide in Darfur. "They made a lot of noise and put pressure on [then] President George Bush, and he announced that there was a genocide [in Darfur]."

Jal said the key is making the public aware of the dire situation in his country, because, he believes, "If people know, they will do something."

With a booming drum track behind him, Jal raps, "We can send mankind to the moon/ And we can reach to the bottom of the sea/ That's why it really kind of baffles me that we cannot end wars and bring peace," calling on the world to scream and shout for peace. Jal, 30, has seen the devastation of the Darfur conflict first hand. He was born into the life of a child soldier, taking up arms at age 7, and then lost his mother during Sudan's first civil war.

But he rose up from those dire circumstances and became a spokesperson for Refugees United, Amnesty International and Oxfam and has performed at Live 8 and Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert, while his music has been featured on three "ER" episodes, the National Geographic documentary "God Grew Tired of Us" and the film "Blood Diamond."

Jal said the song was not exactly inspired by his country's strife, but that it sprang from him in reaction to the situation. "There's nothing to be inspired about," he said. "It's in my heart; my people are dying every day. Sometimes I feel like I want to move fast, but it's slow, like I'm stuck in traffic. Having this moment and the frustration I have is what actually brings it out. You don't need inspiration to come up with a song like that, it's in you; it's a desire."

If you are interested in helping, call the 1-800-GENOCIDE hotline to get involved and donate. A four-song EP featuring the tune, as well as vocal and instrumental tracks available for remixing, is available on iTunes now.

Clooney and Jal are urging action now because of fears of the outcome of an upcoming referendum slated for January 9, 2011, in which the people of Southern Sudan and the region of Abyei will participate in a vote that Jal said could determine the country's fate. It is believed that the North will once again launch a civil war if it loses control over the oil-rich southern region of the country. The last civil war, in 1983, lasted 20 years and claimed more than two million lives.

"I've never had peace; I was born in war," Jal said. "I'm still at war because people who died years ago are coming back into my life every morning. Whenever I try to run away, the voices are still echoing. I'm only at peace when I am speaking."

For more information on the issue, visit the site for Jal's charity, Gua-Africa.org.

Zac Efron And Vanessa Hudgens Split

Good thing the "High School Musical" trilogy already came to an end or things might have been a little awkward on set. According to multiple online reports, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens have split. Both E! News and Us Weekly are reporting that the duo have gone their separate ways.

"It's nothing dramatic," one source told E! about the split. "There's no third party involved." Sources add the couple are still friends, with another one adding, "They were together for so long. It just ran its course."

An Us source confirmed those details: "They are still talking and still friends. There's no drama. No one cheated. They just grew up."

Reps for Hudgens and Efron didn't respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time.

The pair have been busy with their respective careers. Efron is in New Orleans shooting "The Lucky One," while Hudgens is in Hawaii shooting "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." The pair met on the set of "High School Musical" in 2005 and began dating a couple of years later.

"Right off the bat, we had a connection," Hudgens told Glamour magazine earlier this year. "I think everybody could see it. When we had our audition, they paired us together. And he was adorable. I think that we inspire each other. [I love] having someone to grow with."

Efron has also been open about his desire to be with one girl, dismissing those who say he should be dating around. "Everyone tells me [to play the field]," he told Esquire. "I think a lot of guys would enjoy that. But I'm not really like that."

While he made it clear he's a one-woman guy, he did share in 2009 that he had no plans to marry. "I'm definitely not getting married," he told GQ. "In this business, you're either getting married or they want you to be pregnant. I'm not getting married until I'm 40. If ever. The thought never crossed my mind."

Earlier this year, the two laughed off their flicks having the same release dates until Hudgens' "Beastly" moved to accommodate Efron's "Charlie St. Cloud."

"It was disappointing," Efron said. "It was hard. I actually had to break the news to her. I was like, 'I think we are moving on to your date.' ... She took it really well, but it's hard when that kind of stuff happens. We don't, as actors, have any control over it, so we'll see. I mean, hopefully it will work out for the best. 'Beastly' is a great movie, and when it does come out, people are absolutely going to love it."

Golden Globe Predictions: 'Inception,' Natalie Portman And More Locks

Posted: 12 Dec 2010 11:08 PM PST

Aside from the nomination front-runners, we also guess the hopefuls and long shots.
By Eric Ditzian

Awards season has been chugging along for weeks, with little-known critics groups and associations doling out awards and nominations. But unless you've been seeking out the Southeast Film Critics' picks or paying attention to what the Broadcast Film Critics have to say, you haven't yet dialed into what's going on in Hollywood.

That's about to change, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes on Tuesday morning. Which films and actors are locks, which are hoping to be included, and which have no shot at all but really should? Check out some of MTV News' picks.

Best Motion Picture - Drama
Locks: The HFPA got it right a few years ago when it nominated "The Dark Knight." So make no mistake: "Inception" is a lock this year. "The King's Speech" and "True Grit" were born for awards season and will be justly rewarded.

Hopefuls: Is "The Fighter" a good movie or just an average one that showcases spectacular performances? No one seems to agree on this one, so its shot for a Best Picture nod remains unclear. Ditto for the super-depressing "Winter's Bone."

But Don't Forget About: "The Town"! Why? We explain more below, but suffice to say, Ben Affleck's sophomore effort should at least still be a contender.

Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Locks: Mark it down now: "Toy Story 3" and "The Kids Are All Right" will rise to the top. The rest of the category is wide open.

Hopefuls: HFPA could follow the will of the people and support the billion-dollar-grossing "Alice in Wonderland." And the polarizing "Burlesque" is just the sort of flick that always gets a Globe smooch, even though it tanked at the box office. Other high-grossing animated fare like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Despicable Me" could sneak in. Oh, and if "Love & Other Drugs" gets a nod? We quit.

But Don't Forget About: "Easy A," "Cyrus" and "Get Him to the Greek" were three of the funniest comedies of the year. Will they be recognized? Almost certainly not. And that makes us sad.

Best Director - Motion Picture
Locks: Guys like David Fincher ("The Social Network"), Christopher Nolan ("Inception") and Danny Boyle ("127 Hours") need hardly wake up early to find out if they've gotten nominations. Sleep in, gentlemen, your nods are guaranteed.

Hopefuls: "Black Swan" has been tearing it up in limited release and is a front-runner for Best Picture and Actress nods, yet director Darren Aronofsky hasn't been able to make himself into an awards-season sure thing. He deserves to be. Also, never discount the allure of perennial contenders Joel and Ethan Cohen ("True Grit").

But Don't Forget About: If "Shutter Island" had come out in October 2009, Martin Scorsese would surely be part of this year's awards-season chatter. But Paramount shifted the release to February of this year, and while that turned out to be a savvy business move ($294.8 million at the worldwide box office), it seriously damaged the twisty psychological drama's chances for Oscar and Globe glory. Scorsese deserves some props.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Locks: This category is chock-full of locks, including Natalie Portman ("Black Swan"), Jennifer Lawrence (the little-seen "Winter's Bone"), Nicole Kidman ("Rabbit Hole") and Michelle Williams ("Blue Valentine"). All of them richly deserve the honor.

Hopefuls: Don't discount the chances that Tilda Swinton, based on her performance in the blink-and-you-missed-it "I Am Love," will get a nomination, if only because the HFPA love this sort of film.

But Don't Forget About: "The Town" was one of our favorite films of the fall, and its strongest performance was delivered by Rebecca Hall. The film was buzzy during the early festival circuit, but the chatter has since quieted. Hall shouldn't be forgotten.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Locks: A few weeks ago, we would have said this is a two-man race between Colin Firth ("The King's Speech") and James Franco ("127 Hours"). But "The Social Network" is rising with critics groups, along with Jesse Eisenberg's chance to win. All three are sure to get nominations.

Hopefuls: We've been pulling for Robert Duvall in "Get Low" since checking out the film at Sundance. He needs to be recognized. And will the ratings controversy on "Blue Valentine" help or hurt Ryan Gosling?

But Don't Forget About: We dig "Shutter Island," right? Come on, guys, show Leonardo DiCaprio some love.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Locks: Annette Bening in "The Kids Are All Right" is the true lock here. Will Julianne Moore's chances, based on the same movie, be helped or hurt by Bening's front-runner status?

Hopefuls: Pardon us if we're beginning to repeat ourselves, but if Anne Hathaway gets a nod for "Love & Other Drugs," we quit.

But Don't Forget About: Tina Fey is having a heck of a year, and we wouldn't be surprised — nor would we complain — if she gets a nod for "Date Night." Though we'd be shocked to hear Emma Stone's name called for "Easy A," we'd applaud the decision.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Locks: This is a strange category in 2010 with no clear locks.

Hopefuls: Will a nod go to Jake Gyllenhaal for "Love & Other Drugs"? Does Tom Hanks get recognized for "Toy Story 3"? Perhaps Jim Carrey gets tapped for his risky turn in "I Love You Phillip Morris." And we have a strange feeling Kevin Spacey is going to sneak in for "Casino Jack."

But Don't Forget About: Ben Stiller turned an unlikeable character in "Greenberg" into someone you somehow root for. He toned down his antic comedy instincts and delivered his most-truthful performance to date.

Phoenix Try To 'Disappear' On 'Somewhere' Soundtrack

But the French rockers are set to reappear when they start recording new album in 2011.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Phoenix have spent nearly two years becoming progressively more famous thanks to their Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album. So, when the French group agreed to write the score for Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," they were presented with a rather unique challenge: to make themselves disappear.

"We had to hide our music in something bigger and more important, which was a story, and it was a very nice job just to try to disappear and to blend," guitarist Laurent Brancowitz told MTV News on Sunday at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas. "And it was really easy, because the overall sound of the movie was already very [much] like music, with car engines, and to blend our music, it was very cool. We always fight a lot when we are creating, and this time it was different, it was a really nice adventure."

And in writing the soundtrack to the film — which stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning and opens nationally on December 22 — Phoenix also began tucking away ideas for the follow-up to Wolfgang too. And they came up with so many that starting early next year, they'll begin working on a new album. Just don't ask them what those ideas might be. From the sound of things, they haven't even shared them with each other. Out of necessity, of course.

"We are going to start the 4th of January, to be precise, in Paris," guitarist Christian Mazzalai said. "We have many ideas, but we keep them in our boots. We are too afraid to destroy them if we say them to you or each other."

And though work is set to begin on the new album in early 2011, fans might not hear it until the following year. Seems Phoenix are taking this whole disappearing thing pretty seriously.

"We are just going to begin working on it and see what happens," bassist Deck d'Arcy smiled. "In our dreams, it may come out next year, but probably not in reality."
