Jay-Z's 'On To The Next One' Is MTV News' #8 Song Of 2010

Hov's diabolical Swizz Beatz record (and its snarling video) blaze onto our Top 25 songs of the year.

Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, a list that's already featured the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West, to name just a few. On Monday, we began rolling out our Top 10 — starting with Gaga's "Telephone" and rolling on to Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie."

Now, we're set to unveil our pick for #8 ... Jay-Z's "On to the Next One," a diabolical track that floored pretty much everybody, thanks in no small part to its snarl, its swagger and, yes, its sorta-Satanic video too.

First things first: Yes, this song is from an album that came out in 2009. And, yes, it was technically released to radio in December of that same year. No, it didn't match the chart-topping success of its predecessor, the world-uniting "Empire State of Mind." In fact, it didn't even come close. And, frankly, with its leering, inky backbeat and macabre music video, it confounded many of Jay-Z's most ardent supporters. So why are we still talking about it at the end of 2010? Well, why not?

Because despite everything we just mentioned, and no matter what the detractors had to say, no one can deny the fact that "On to the Next One" is a jaw-dropping piece of work. From Swizz Beatz's serpentine track — all fits and starts, rewinds and fast forwards (and Justice samples) — to Jay's deft, defiant wordplay ("N---as want my old sh--/ Buy my old album") to Sam Brown's video, which had the world convinced that Jigga was either A) a Satanist, B) a member of the Illuminati, or C) both, there wasn't a more purposefully diabolical song released by a major-label artist this year. Not even Kanye could match its power, no matter how many King Crimson samples he threw into the mix.

Because, like the title implies, "On to the Next One" is Jay-Z distancing himself from the pack, kissing the past (and his critics) goodbye and moving boldly — probably blindly — into the future. He's over throwbacks and Auto-Tune and Cristal, and you should be, too, mostly because hip-hop needs you to be. He's not just a rapper, he's a cultural ambassador ... and this song is proof. There's nothing about it that's easy to digest, but more often than not, the important songs — the necessary ones — aren't meant to be swallowed in one sitting. They're designed to be gnawed on, to agitate and anger and, ultimately, inspire. This is how revolutions begin and pearls are made, after all.

Of course, leading a movement can be a messy affair, and Jay caught it from all sides thanks to the video for "On to the Next One," an arty, black-and-white thing that combined cocksure swagger with images of crucifixes and bullets, Damien Hirst homages and even, perhaps, a baphomet or two. It is not, shall we say, your traditional hip-hop clip, and because of that (months after its release), Jigga was branded all sorts of nasty things, to the point that he felt compelled to address his supposed secret-society leanings on "Free Mason," a devilish track he cut with Rick Ross. But even then, as he was (in theory) acknowledging the naysayers, he was telling them to f--- off too. Take note: He said he was amazing, not a Mason.

So hate if you want to. Whisper as loud as you'd like. Jay doesn't care. With "On to the Next One," he's moved beyond your earthly concerns. You can drag your feet if you'd like, but eventually, you'll be where he's at. Only, by that time, he'll be somewhere else entirely. That's what the greats do, after all: They destroy, they rebuild and then they move on to something completely new. So, in a way, it makes sense that it took nearly a year for everyone to catch on to a song like this. In fact, we're willing to bet that's exactly how Jay-Z planned it. Kind of makes you want to invest in some white Louis boat shoes, doesn't it?

Where would you place Jay's "On to the Next One" among the top songs of 2010? Let us know in the comments!

Daft Punk's 'Derezzed' Video Revives The 'Tron' Legacy

French electro duo tease their unmasking in just-premiered clip.
By James Montgomery

As if the gigantic electronic pyramid and constantly worn robot helmets weren't proof enough, I'm beginning to suspect that Daft Punk derive some sort of bizarre pleasure from messing with us.

The latest example of this occurred Tuesday (December 7) with the premiere of "Derezzed," the first single from their much-anticipated "Tron Legacy" soundtrack. As any "Tron"/ Daft Punk obsessive (and they're basically the same people) will tell you, it not only comes after years of bated-breath waiting, but after October's premiere of a teaser trailer that pretty much everyone assumed was the actual video for the song anyway.

So, right off the bat, Daft Punk have you on the ropes. You probably just finished wrapping your head around the teaser version of "Derezzed," and now, well, there's a whole new version to digest. And while I'll get to the video in a second, it bears mentioning here that the music in the clip is also a bit of a mind-frick, because after telling anyone who would listen that their score to the "Tron" sequel would be a departure from their four-on-the-floor, French house-ified past — mentioning "90-piece orchestras" in interviews about the project — they come right back and hit you with a slab of downright classic Daft Punk: spindly synths and robo voices and piston-pumping backbone and the full nine.

The video itself? Well, it's sure to be a treat for everyone who's been holding their breath since Daft Punk began working on the score nearly two years ago. It's a loving nod to the "Tron" past — all retro grids and tracing light cycles, not to mention the sly working of ENCOM into the proceedings — but it also keeps DP obsessives watching until the last possible frame — because it keeps teasing the very real possibility that the French duo may actually be unmasked. Turns out, all we get to see is actress Olivia Wilde. It's a cruel — if not cunning — trick, and after watching the video time and time again, I get the very real feeling that somewhere, in their robotic headquarters high atop the Parisian sprawl, Daft Punk are laughing. They win again.

Pretty soon, Justin Bieber is going to need his own aisle at the store. Between his first three CDs, a fragrance, a new line of nail polish, T-shirts, mugs, aluminum water bottles, lunch boxes, Silly Bandz, headphones, dolls, Christmas tree ornaments, a Halloween wig and boxer shorts there is no shortage of Bieber swag out there.

Just in time for the holidays, he's added another item to the list: trading cards. According to a press release issued on Monday, entertainment collectible company Panini America — the maker of cards commemorating the NFL, NBA, NHL and Hollywood movie and TV stars — a line of official Justin Bieber trading cards will hit shelves around the country this week.

The collection is made up of 150 unique cards and 30 stickers, including 500 randomly inserted ones with authentic JB autograph cards. And because Panini knows how contagious Bieber fever is, they've created four nine-card puzzles that can be arranged to create mini JB posters. For you card geeks out there, there are also special card sets that include 12 Spellbound cards, 18 Download cards and 10 XXOO cards (whatever that means).

"It's awesome; it makes me feel great," Bieber said in a statement about getting his own card line. "I always dreamed of being a hockey player and having my own trading card. I remember collecting hockey cards, so the idea that kids are going to enjoy my cards like I enjoyed my hockey cards is amazing!"

The $1.99 sets include five cards and one sticker and are available now at outlets as diverse as Bed Bath & Beyond, f.y.e, Target, Toys "R" Us and Wal-Mart as well as Bieber's online store.

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

If DJ Khaled's records are movies, then the Miami-based radio jock is a director. And like all good cameramen, he wants to keep his script closely guarded.

His next project is his first for Cash Money Records, and he's looking to kick things off with a lead single that would put "The Matrix Reloaded" opening scene to shame.

"I don't want to tell you the name of the artist yet," he told Mixtape Daily. "I want people to be surprised. But I have my first single."

It might not be that hard to figure out who he could have in store for the record. He's new to Cash Money, and a certain Cash Money artist was recently released from prison. Plus, the two have a penchant for making smash hits together.

"I can tell you for a fact that me and Wayne did work together," Khaled said. "I'm not gonna lie, he's on it. We'll let that one go."

The album We the Best Forever marks Khaled's major-label debut, and he's hoping to make major moves with the set. In the past, he's delivered two big hits on cue with each release. But now, he's planning to stretch his LP out like an outfielder reaching over the fence to steal a home run.

"Bigger team, and they're letting me do what I want," he said.

So far, he's 75 percent done with the project, which will also feature Chris Brown and Keyshia Cole on one record (he called it "Olympic torch music" because it's so inspirational), Cee Lo Green ("Sleep When I'm Gone") and, of course, Weezy.

"When I work with Wayne, I always get the most classic verses, like 'We Taking Over,' " Khaled said. "And this verse with my new one, it's ... I'm not even gonna lie: It's amazing.

"It's one of them anthems that I do," he added. "The streets are gonna embrace it on another level. When you hear it you're gonna be like, 'This is what I'm talking about.' It's that anthem, I got them."

Johnny Depp On A '21 Jump Street' Cameo: 'I'm In!'

Here's what we know: Jonah Hill has penned a cameo for Johnny Depp in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of "21 Jump Street." Depp, who starred as Officer Tom Hanson in the '80s TV series on which Hill's flick is based, is open to the idea of popping up in the movie, telling MTV News last year, "If we find the right thing to do, it could be very funny."

Here's what we don't know: Why haven't Hill and Depp been in contact about the possibility? Because as we learned while Depp was promoting "The Tourist" in Paris last week, he hasn't heard a peep about "21 Jump Street."

"I've said I'm into it, but no one's actually approached me," he told us.

As recently as last month, Hill said he's still hoping Depp will sign up for a part — "Just do it, dude. Don't be an a--hole," he joked — but as of now, Depp remains in the dark.

"Call him. I'm in. I'm in," Depp said. "I think it'd be pretty easy."

There's no word if Depp would reprise his role as Hanson or step into a new part, but Hill has told us in the past the film won't be a spoof of the original show but a "a hard-core, R-rated movie" that focuses on the fish-out-of-water scenario of cops returning to high school to pose as students in the name of undercover investigative work.

"What happens is, they get caught up in the high school-ness as opposed to the police work," he said last year. "And whenever they get too caught up in the high school drama, police work comes in. And whenever they get too caught up in the police work, high school drama comes in."

Check out everything we've got on "21 Jump Street."

Richie Hawtin Explains His Plastikman Alter Ego's 'Arkives' Collection

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 03:02 AM PST

'I have this opportunity to bring that darker, even weirder sound to this new, ever-growing audience,' he tells MTV News of digitizing his back catalog.
By Adam Stewart

Richie Hawtin's Plastikman alter ego feels that something is missing from our current state of dance music, and he's doing something about it.

"There are hundreds, if not thousands, of electronic-music dance tracks coming out each day, so there are black holes in its history that need to be digitized. For us in the electronic-music world, we haven't had our Beatles [iTunes] moment yet," said Hawtin, who just scored the #2 slot on Resident Advisor's Top DJs of 2010 readers poll. "There's still a lot of the electronic music history missing online."

This notion is what prompted Hawtin, under his Plastikman moniker, to release Arkives, a retrospective of the dark side of a dance-music pioneer.

"Plastikman always comes back when I feel there's something to say or there's something missing in the scene," Hawtin said. "I have this opportunity — or maybe even this responsibility — to bring that darker, even weirder sound to this new, ever-growing audience.

"This is what I'm doing with my Arkives project," he continued. "I'm trying to bring that stuff back, digitize it and represent it for those new fans of Hawtin or deadmau5 and say, 'Hey, if you're really into electronic music right now in 2010 — I don't want to give you a history lesson, but there is some foundation that you'd probably find interesting and get in to.' "

In a day where dance music is reaching the masses, big-room house and trance seem to reign supreme. Plastikman, however, has set out on a mission to keep the dark and sinister side of the genre alive, and in doing so, he has inspired some of the biggest names in the biz.

"I love that guy!" deadmau5 told MTV News of one of his key musical influences. "He's someone who I definitely look at for wisdom. We're billed at a lot of the same events, and we click! We're the two 'hoser Canadians,' like, in the middle of Madrid, and he's a really good guy."

"To hear that what I've been doing has been working, and continues to work, gives me that power to hopefully be inspired and keep reinspiring the next generation," Hawtin told MTV News. "I want more kids to grow up thinking that technology is just as much of an instrument as a guitar or a drum."

As founder and co-founder of Minus and Plus 8 Records, respectively, Hawtin has made an indelible mark on the industry as a producer and a technological pioneer. Not only did he develop Traktor DJ software, but he is also one of the founding fathers of online EMD retailer Beatport. Hawtin has had a hand in guiding the entire industry toward what it is today, while at the same time keeping its roots intact.

"Electronic music is not pop or pop music; it's a little bit fringe," he said. "And I want it to be fringe in a way, a little bit just to the left side. ... It's my belief that if we help build that language and keep that foundation there, then it only opens up the possibilities for cooler things to happen."

2011 promises to be a banner year for Hawtin, as he gears up for a whirlwind global tour. Starting with a New Year's Eve performance at Mexico's BPM, Hawtin then jet-sets to Spain several dates before turning around and heading back to Mexico to close out the weeklong BPM. After a rare month back in his studio in Germany, he'll be off to Australia's Future Music Festival and, finally, Miami in late March, where he and his camp intend to keep their shows in line with the Ultra Music Festival, not the official Winter Music Conference.

"We have these moments through the year, the Electric Zoo here [in New York], the Detroit [Electronic Music] Festival, the Winter Music Conference — these are the dates we count on as DJs and as businesspeople to come and promote and have fun, and we've been doing that for years. And for someone to try to change that? At the end of the day, I think the electronic-music scene is a great and very strong music community, and that's why you'll see a great and strong community come through this with a great weekend in the end of March."

'Vice Guide To Everything' Host Recalls Residential Strip Club

A lot happens on MTV's new series "The Vice Guide to Everything."

Hosts Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton, and Shane Smith — who also co-founded the magazine that launched the Vice brand 15 years ago — travel to places like Russia, Ghana and North Korea in search of compelling people and their stories, which they'll share with MTV viewers on Mondays at 11 p.m.

Duffy's adventures this season include getting shot (while wearing a bulletproof jacket) in Colombia and trailing a Mafia-funded pop star in Naples, Italy, but he recently told MTV News he didn't have to travel far for his most memorable meeting.

"I will always very vividly remember meeting Jay Thunderbolt," Duffy said about the Detroit man who was running a 24-hour all-nude strip club out of his dead parents' house.

Duffy was treated to complimentary shots, got to look through Thunderbolt's self-defense gear and enjoyed a lap dance from his crew of willing ladies. But the host admitted that he ran up against MTV's standards team when it came to the footage.

"You could show the girl doing the flip on my lap where she put her legs up. She started to spread them, but you couldn't show the spreading. You had to cut it right before then," Duffy explained. "Which was fine with me, by the way, because I have a mother and a grandmother," he added.

Thunderbolt clearly made an impression on the rest of the "Vice Guide" family, too, as he was invited to the show's New York premiere last week with his return flight booked for the next day.

"The thing about Jay is he probably hasn't left Detroit in 30 years. He hasn't flown in, God knows how long. When we booked him a flight his first question was, 'How many of my guns can I bring?' His second was, 'Could you get me a smoking seat?' Clearly a little bit dated in his travel plans, but the next day, Jay did not get in the cab we sent to bring him to the airport, or the next cab, or the next one, or the fifth one. And we have no idea whether he ever got on a flight and went home," Duffy lamented. "So, Jay Thunderbolt could be roaming the streets of New York right now."

"The Vice Guide to Everything" airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.

Eminem's 'Love The Way You Lie' Is MTV News' #9 Song Of 2010

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 10:47 PM PST

Rihanna collaboration topped the charts and got real, landing it high on our Top 25 songs of the year.
By James Montgomery

Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, an all-encompassing list that has already included the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West, to name just a few. Now, we're pulling the curtain back on our pick for #9 ... Eminem and Rihanna's massive "Love the Way You Lie," a song that resonated with both fans and critics alike, mostly because it was unafraid to get unspeakably real.

For more than a decade now, Eminem has always operated with a safety net: his Slim Shady alter ego. Slim says and does the kind of things that normal people can't (or don't), dealing almost exclusively in wanton acts of violence and/or depravity and never, ever apologizing for any of it. At times, the act has been so convincing that you're not quite sure if Em is Slim Shady, which is how he's been able to get away with songs like "Kim" (in which he stuffs his wife in the trunk of his car), "Kill You" (where he rapes his own mother) and even "3 a.m." (the one where he goes on a pill-addled murder spree).

Because of Slim, no matter how brutal or unflinching Eminem's subject matter, his fans have always been able to laugh it away, even if, deep down inside, that darkness still terrifies them. "That isn't really Eminem," the logic goes. "It's Slim Shady. It's different."

But in 2010, Eminem changed things up. He got sober, he got serious and — for the most part — he shelved the Slim Shady character altogether. It was a bold, if not necessary, move, and the end result was Recovery, an album that has wowed critics and fans alike, thanks in no small part to the complete absence of that alter ego. Instead, we all got to see Em as his most honest, his most brutal ... and, in the case of "Love the Way You Lie," his darkest.

On the surface, "Lie" is an unblinking, unyielding examination of a relationship gone horribly awry, a rapidly descending tale of two lovers who cannot live without each other, and seem destined to die because of it. It's a masterwork of unfiltered angst, full of violence (both real and imagined) and threats (or promises), and the fact that it resonated to such a degree with the record-buying public — it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks — is both a testament to its power and more terrifying than a dozen songs about stuffing someone in a trunk.

But no matter how you choose to analyze the song and its success, you cannot deny the fact that the song works mostly because it's so terribly real. When Em screams "Next time/ There will be no next time," you can't help but believe that he's telling the truth, no matter how frightening that may be, and you get the creeping suspicion that he's actually shouted that threat to someone very close to him at some point in his past. Perhaps even more terrifying is the fact that he follows that line up with "I apologize." You cannot write a song any better than that, because that's how this kind of thing happens in real life.

And though she might seem an odd choice to sing the hook, Rihanna more than holds her own against Eminem's bluster. She returns serve, her rage and heartbreak are equally as tangible as his ... once again, because you get the feeling (well, or you know for a fact) that she's been in situations like this before. Sadly, there's no substitute for experience.

"Love the Way You Lie" is about many things, most of which are very bad. But it's also a testament to Eminem's courage and willingness to put it all on the line, his gifted skills as a storyteller and his deft ability to turn his gaze inward. For the first time, he sheds Slim Shady and walks the tightrope without the aid of a safety net, a balancing act that's scarier — and more thrilling — than a dozen ax murders. For better or worse.

It's time to welcome some of your favorite celebrity tweeters back to the land of the living.

Last week, several celebs temporarily signed off their Twitter accounts and Facebook pages to help raise $1 million for Alicia Keys' Keep a Child Alive organization. They proclaimed their own Digital Deaths last Wednesday on World AIDS Day and met their goal Monday (December 6). Some stars began tweeting immediately.

The idea was hatched by Keys, and she and other celebs urged their fans to buy back their online lives by texting the first name of the celebrity they miss on social media the most to contribute to the cause.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of the fans, friends and artists who joined this cause," Keys said in a statement. "I'm incredibly inspired by all of the donations that have been made to help us achieve our goal and so humbled by the outpour of support from everyone."

Now that the tweeting ban has been lifted, celebrities including Keys, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Khloé Kardashian, Lenny Kravitz, Jay Sean, Swizz Beatz, Serena Williams and Janelle Monáe are now back to using the popular online social-networking sites.

The organization received a big boost from billionaire and philanthropist Stewart Rahr, who matched $500,000 in funds raised by the public who donated to the cause.

"Although we never expected to raise $1 million overnight, we are completely blown away that we were able to achieve our goal in less than a week. We are moved by the many generous donations and by the amount of support we've received from the public," said Leigh Blake, the co-founder of the organization. "Over 3,600 people have joined the fight and sacrificed their own digital lives for this important cause, and we intend to continue this movement."

Seacrest, who began hosting the event after Clark suffered a stroke in 2004, said in a statement that he invited McCarthy to join in on the festivities after remembering the former "Singled Out" co-host's broadcasting skills. "I was reminded how great Jenny is at live broadcasting when she recently stopped by my radio show. That day, with Dick's blessing, I invited her to join us in Times Square!"

The "American Idol" host isn't the only one looking forward to McCarthy's inclusion in the celebration this year. "Jenny is a great addition to this year's show," Larry Klein, producer of the special, said. "She is funny, relatable and high energy, and she will be great with our New Year's crowd, Ryan and Dick."

'Walking Dead' Stars Look Back At Finale, Ahead To Season Two

Laurie Holden and Norman Reedus talk about their characters' new paths.
By Rick Marshall

The first season of AMC's hit series "The Walking Dead" ended with an explosive finale, leaving fans of the zombie-fueled drama wondering what's next for the ragtag group of survivors and their loved ones.

For castmembers Laurie Holden (Andrea) and Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), the recent loss of a sibling has put both their characters on different paths — and in very different directions. The pair recently discussed their characters' states of mind at the end of the first season and offered some thoughts about where they see their characters headed in season two of "The Walking Dead."

"I think Andrea is in a severe depression," Holden told MTV News. "I think she's very apathetic. Her reason to live has been taken from her. Amy was her heart.

"Her deciding in the season finale that she was going to live wasn't necessarily for her," she continued. "It's because she didn't want another death on her hands. Dale gave her no choice. She's looking at this man, and he's saying, 'I'm going to die if you don't get it together. I'm going to die if you don't come with me.' ... She kind of hates him for it, because she wants to check out."

In "The Walking Dead" comic book series, Andrea evolves into the group's resident sniper, discovering an aptitude for high-powered weaponry in the wake of the zombie apocalypse. Holden alluded to this element of her character's development while discussing her hopes for the second season.

"[At first], Andrea doesn't know that she has this skill set," Holden said. "I think that will organically unfold where she'll actually go to the shooting range or something will be written where she's like, 'Oh, I'm a natural!' I am so excited, because I have a little bit of a tomboy in me, but I'm very excited to start going out with the guys and start shooting zombies."

While Holden indicated that Andrea's fans will have to wait awhile for her to discover her talent with a rifle, Reedus joked that he'd be more than happy to have Daryl Dixon lend Andrea the crossbow he carried throughout the first season.

"You can borrow my crossbow," he joked.

"That's so sweet," Holden laughed.

As for his own character's development after the first season, Reedus said he sees Daryl becoming more of a leader and less of a shoot-first character in the stories to come — especially now that his violent, dominating older brother, Merle (Michael Rooker), is out of the picture.

"I think there are leader qualities in Daryl, so I think once some trust issues are more defined, he'll take on roles that are less hot-headed," the actor said.

"Maybe he'll find some love," Holden teased.

"I think once he's out of the shadow of his big brother, I think he can man up and be less of the 8-year-old and not exactly a kick-ass man, but a make-decisions man," Reedus said.

When news first broke that Demi Lovato had entered a treatment facility to deal with personal issues, it was reported that an altercation between Demi and a female dancer had been a factor in the Disney star's decision to seek help.

Now, dancer Alex Welch — who was on the road with Lovato and the Jonas Brothers — is speaking up about the incident, which reportedly took place in late October, just before Lovato announced she was leaving the JoBros' tour.

"To this day, I haven't gotten an apology. I've heard nothing," Welch told People magazine on Monday (December 6). "That's sad if you think that person is your friend."

According to reports, Lovato was angry when she found out someone on the tour had told tour managers about her partying. Welch said the teen star "pulled the dancers in a room and threatened: 'If I find out who told on me, ' " adding that she was clueless about what Lovato was referring to.

"I felt, honestly, I didn't say anything and didn't think twice about it," Welch recalled. "We were on the plane with the Jonases having this awesome time, and I didn't get a call or text from Demi or a 'hey, you got a problem with me,' nothing. And she walks up and punches me and, literally, walked away and got in her seat," she continued. "No one should walk up and do that and brush it over, it's not right."

TMZ posted photos of Welch with what looked like a black eye.

The dancer said she's looking at her legal options now. "We have contacted the Lovato camp and we are waiting for a response. If we don't hear back, we will pursue litigation."

A rep for Demi confirmed that, saying, "We are in the process of engaging with Alex's lawyer and hope to resolve this as quickly as possible." The rep added, "Demi feels awful about what happened. Right now, she is 100 percent committed to her treatment."

What do you think of Alex Welch's side of the story? Tell us in the comments.

Johnny Depp Mourns His Sexiest Man Alive Loss To Ryan Reynolds

'I feel emasculated,' the 'Tourist' actor jokes.

In 2009, Johnny Deep ruled the world of hotness by being named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. It's an honor he also held six years prior, in 2003.

But in 2010, he no longer ruled the roost. The magazine named Ryan Reynolds this year's Sexiest Man Alive, something the "Tourist" star was a bit upset about when MTV News caught up with him last week.

"I feel emasculated," he joked about Reynolds taking over the title. "I feel like I've been beaten down like some horrible ... you know, like some pathetic harp seal. But, I mean, that's how it goes, isn't it?"

Depp shouldn't feel too upset about the whole thing: He does have a new movie with Angelina Jolie opening this month and he just wrapped up work on another "Pirates of the Caribbean" flick, so he definitely has a lot to look forward to. But he does still feel the sting of losing his title. "I think I can work my way forward, but will I try for it again? No. ... I worked so hard to gain that title."

Like Depp, onetime Sexiest Man Alive and Oscar winner George Clooney has also had some good-natured fun after Reynolds assumed the throne. Last month, the actor joked that he was fine with Reynolds being crowned Sexiest because it meant his pal didn't get the title. "I'm very happy for him," Clooney told People. "I'm also happy that it's not Brad [Pitt]."

Last week, Justin Timberlake was spotted on crutches after sustaining an injury on the set of his sci-fi thriller "Now." And now, more details are emerging about what happened to the singer/actor when he attempted to do his own stunts on the set of the Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde co-starring flick.

Sources say they "heard a pop" in Timberlake's leg, and E! News confirmed that Timberlake's injury has temporarily shut down production on the film. A rep for the studio said in a statement, "Justin Timberlake sustained a muscle injury to his calf on the set of Andrew Niccol's thriller 'Now.' Production has taken a brief hiatus and will resume shortly."

A set source told the website that the shutdown should last about two weeks. "He hasn't heard anything about the MRI results," the source added. "But they're freezing production until he's off crutches and able to act again." Timberlake was spotted at the Arclight theater in Hollywood for a "Social Network" Q&A session last Thursday, and he seemed to be having trouble walking. The session took place shortly after he was injured.

Timberlake has been making waves as an actor as of late thanks to his roles in "The Social Network" and "Friends With Benefits," which also features Mila Kunis and Emma Stone.

"I gotta tell you, breaking up with Justin Timberlake is really fun," Stone recently told MTV News. "It's a feel-good time. He's such a nice, funny guy. It was really fun. We had a good time."

Young Buck Gets Back On His Grind With New 'Street Album'

Street King: Young Buck

Holding It Down For: Memphis

Mixtape: Back on My Buck Sh--, Vol. 2

Real Spit: Young Buck doesn't concern himself with media reports detailing his troubles with the tax man or contractual disputes with G-Unit pitbull 50 Cent. Instead, the Tennessee native deals with his issues in the booth. And on the Drumma Boy-helmed Back on My Buck Sh--, Vol. 2, street-album fans will get some of Buck's most heartfelt rhymes yet.

"I just been going in the booth and giving it to you," the ex-G-Unit MC told Mixtape Daily when we met up at the Drumma Boy compound. "Life is real like that, ya'll know that. ... But I'm good, my music speaks for itself ... I'm speaking through the music."

Buck said his latest sessions with Drumma happened naturally. "Honestly, he'll tell you man, I just walked in the booth and gave it to the world exactly how it is, and that's how I really been doing a lot of my music lately."

The producer said fans can expect Buck stray from his usual fare on B.O.M.B. S. 2. (Drumma Boy was actually doing double duty during the Mixtape Daily interview, tending to another Memphis heavyweight, 8Ball, who was going through tracks.)

"The sound of the project is basically a whole mix, it's like a gumbo," Drumma explained. "You gon' hear a little bit of rock influence, you gon' hear a little bit of soul influence, a little bit of Marvin Gaye influence, with the "AM/FM" — shout-out to Lupe, coming through, you know, blazing us." He continued, "I can't say too much. You gotta listen to it and really capture the moment."

Joint to Check For:

» "Got Me One" That's real heavy in the streets," Drumma said of the track.

"Yeah, salute to the streets, salute to the streets, 'Got Me One,' Buck chimed in. "We're aware that we're putting what would be considered your album as our street mixtape, our street album.

"What I'm basically telling you people is that if this is the street album, this mixtape, then imagine what the album gon' be," Buck smiled. "To be continued."

While Katy Perry and "Glee" guest star Darren Criss have both had chart success with Perry's "Teenage Dream," the two had yet to perform the track together. Criss originally performed the tune on the hit Fox show, while Perry released it earlier this year as the second single from her album of the same name.

The two finally took the stage together for the first time at the Trevor LIVE annual fundraising event held at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Criss, dressed in a suit, was performing the track with the show's Dalton Academy Warblers, when Perry, dressed in a sequin dress, hit the stage to belt out the last bit of the tune. Footage of the performance hit the Net shortly after the event.

Other performances for the night included a spoken-word number from Queen Latifah as well as the Hollywood Bowl cast of "Rent" singing "Seasons of Love" and "Will I." Kathy Griffin was honored by "Glee" star Jane Lynch for donating her paycheck from an L.A.-area stand-up gig to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Some of the other names in attendance included Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Arquette, Sarah Silverman, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Kate Walsh, Wayne Brady, Justin Long, Joe Manganiello, Kristin Davis, Brittany Snow, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Josh Duhamel, Anna Kendrick, James Marsden and Jessica Alba.

"She's been really sweet," Criss said of Perry's support after his "Teenage Dream" performance on "Glee." " ... It's a great tune. I really lucked out that I got to sing that song. I mean, you've gotta sing what they give you."

Whose version of "Teenage Dream" do you prefer: Katy's or Darren's? Or do you prefer their joint version? Let us know in the comments!

Robert Pattinson Is 'Extraordinarily Attractive,' Admits Reese Witherspoon

Actress marvels at the 'fervor' around her 'Water for Elephants' co-star.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Reese Witherspoon became a household name in the late '90s with a string of scene-stealing turns in films like "Pleasantville" and "Election." Around the same time, Leonardo DiCaprio was transforming from teen heartthrob to mature Hollywood A-lister, thanks to the nearly $2 billion success of "Titanic."

Over a decade later, Witherspoon has been thinking back to that pop culture period. It's the only way she can make sense of the overwhelming popularity of her "Water for Elephants" co-star Robert Pattinson.

"The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in 'Titanic,' " she told MTV News while promoting her upcoming movie "How Do You Know." "It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was just unbelievable — till 5 o'clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him."

The Tennessee set of "Water for Elephants" was basically no different than what happens when the "Twilight" vamp goes anywhere. As director Francis Lawrence told us in the fall, "[E]very day there would be, like, 50 people [staked out] ... . [T]here would be people camped out in the hallways of our hotel. All day, all night long, it didn't matter. People were there to try to catch a glimpse."

Witherspoon, of course, got an up-close-and-personal glimpse of RPattz, and she was happy to report back to us: "He is extraordinarily attractive. I'm not gonna lie," she said.

"Robert is such a great guy from a great family," she explained. "That's the thing that's so funny. He's not really this bad boy; he's just a great guy and really worked hard on 'Water for Elephants.' He really worked long hours, long days. He looks totally different in the movie."

2010 has been a banner year for Waka Flocka Flame, not only in the streets, but also on the Billboard charts.

Now, the Atlanta MC's female-flavored anthem "No Hands," featuring Roscoe Dash and Wale, has been certified gold by the RIAA after selling 500,000 copies. "That feel good, the first song going gold is big for me," Waka Flocka Flame told MTV News at the Power 106 Cali Christmas concert in Los Angeles. "It means that I'm growing as an artist, so I need to take effect to that."

After dropping his mixtape Salute Me or Shoot Me, Vol. 1 in January 2009, many were introduced to the energetic rapper through "O Let's Do It," Waka's breakout record. The rowdy club track quickly became a fan favorite and, a year later — after he peppered the streets with more mixtapes and a guest verse on "Bingo," from Gucci Mane's 2009 LP, The State vs. Radric Davis"O Let's Do It" got an official remix featuring Diddy, Rick Ross and Gucci Mane.

Then "Hard in Da Paint" took over the clubs in early 2010, followed by "No Hands," which currently sits at #1 on Billboard's Rap Songs chart, #22 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Earlier this year, MTV News' Hip-Hop Brain Trust voted the rapper 2010's #8 Hottest MC in the Game. "I was like, got-damn!" Waka said at the time. "Oh, sh--, I made it! Hell yeah, I was [surprised]. Come on, man, I never thought I'd be on something like that. Not yet. It's so soon."

What do you think of Waka's breakout success this year? Sound off in the comments!

'The Vice Guide To Everything' Goes Everywhere, Because No One Else Does

Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:35 AM PST

Vice co-founder Shane Smith and company bring their worldwide adventures to MTV Monday at 11 p.m. ET.
By James Montgomery

Over the past year, "The Vice Guide to Everything" stars Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton and Shane Smith have spent quality time with Yemeni rebels, Palestinian car thieves and Russian mobsters ... to name just a few. And they did it basically because no one else will.

"Well, I think journalism has changed ... there was a time we actually believed what the news told us," Smith, co-founder of Vice, the magazine and burgeoning media conglomerate that proudly goes places others won't (both literally and physically), told MTV News. "And I think after the last two wars, where mainstream media was completely co-opted by the government and, in its own admission, failed in what it was supposed to do, that young people got totally disenfranchised ... and because mainstream news media failed its job, people like us had to come and fill the vacuum."

And on Monday (December 6) at 11 p.m. ET, Smith and his cohorts will begin fighting that good fight on MTV, with the premiere of "The Vice Guide to Everything," a 30-minute, wholly irreverent, oft eye-opening look at people and places that the mainstream media wouldn't dare cover, let alone spend time with. Armed with only cameras, the occasional translator and the odd "fixer" (basically a local hired to ensure they're not killed) these three went there, and came back with some incredible stories.

"I was most scared in Yemen, when we were shooting with the rebels and the Houthis and tribal leaders who have death warrants on their head," Smith explained. "The secret police arrested us, took all of our stuff, and we had all these cards of every rebel leader that the government wanted to kill ... so the guy who helped us out there actually had to bribe the secret police to give us the tapes so we could wipe them ... then we were able to get out."

"[There were] these car thieves in the West Bank that, because of all the restrictions on trade — importing car parts, specifically — if you want a car in Palestine, you basically pay some guy, he sneaks into Israel, he steals a car, brings it back and nobody finds you," Morton added. "And we were hanging out with these guys who basically do that for a living, and ... we steal a car together, and then a day later, he and a couple of his goon buddies showed up and tried to shake us down. The problem was they only spoke Arabic, our field producer spoke a little bit of Arabic, but we were basically relying on a translator for them to shake us down. And it was the most dragged-out event on the planet. ... It just kept going for so long that, by the end of it, everybody was visibly bored with the proceedings, and they gave up."

And despite the near-death experiences, the "Vice" crew said that their show isn't about pushing the boundaries just for the thrill of it (though, certainly, that plays a part). It's to tell compelling stories and introduce American viewers to the kinds of things that go on every single day, no matter how hard the news networks try to ignore them.

"[It's] not that we're Walter Cronkite or anything, but that whole era is over," Smith said. "So, I think one of the things we do is we just show a story that resonates with people ... and that's what we're trying to do with this show, which you should watch, Mondays at 11."

"The Vice Guide to Everything" airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.

Jane Lynch reveals that the CBS anchorwoman will perform 'Tea for Two' alongside Matthew Morrison.

Katie Couric will come out from behind her CBS news desk and throw on her dancing shoes for the post-Super Bowl episode of "Glee." The anchorwoman, who previously expressed disappointment about a GQ photo spread featuring the show's stars earlier this year, will perform a dance number to the tune of "Tea for Two," according to Jane Lynch.

"I haven't shot with her yet, but yeah, she's going to be in our Super Bowl episode," the "Glee" actress told "Access Hollywood" over the weekend. "She's also doing a dance with [Matthew Morrison]. She'll be doing 'Tea for Two.' "

The whimsical classic, which first appeared in the 1925 musical "No, No, Nanette," is a loving tune in which a couple imagines their future together. Couric's "Glee" fandom isn't a well-kept secret either, as Jane added, "She's a Gleek! She has been since the beginning."

However, just a few months ago, the 53-year-old anchor was just one of many who appeared not too happy with the cast's racy photo spread for GQ magazine, which featured Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith and Lea Michele.

"As Seth Meyers might say on 'Weekend Update,' really?!" Couric said of the spread at the end of her newscast back in October. "These very adult photos of young women who perform in a family show just seem so un-'Glee'-like. The program is already edgy in the right ways; these images don't really — in my humble opinion — fit the 'Glee' gestalt. I know there are a lot of bigger problems in the world right now, but still, as Mr. Schuester might say to the club, 'I'm really disappointed.' "

Katie's guest spot isn't the only reason to tune into the hit show's post-Super Bowl episode, which is reported to be the priciest in television history. Airing February 6, the broadcast will also feature a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" mashed up with a yet-to-be-chosen song.
