MIAMI — For Drake, even as the venues get bigger, his performances grow more intimate.

On the second date of his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour — the sophomore headlining trek for the Toronto lyricist following his Away From Home outing earlier this year — Drake was ever the gentleman, as he catered to a single invited guest onstage at the James L. Knight Center, despite all of the shrieks from the sold-out crowd.

"Stay right there," he told concertgoer Veronica. "Let me take my time."

With that, Drake casually walked over to the young woman, took her hand and began slow-dancing with her. "Hold on," he shouted to the audience, pausing only a minute in. "If you have a camera on your phone, stop."

The Thank Me Later star then proceeded to grind even more slowly with the lucky fan as a twin billing of "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" and "A Night Off" boomed throughout the arena. On a night when everyone from LeBron James to Bow Wow was backstage watching the concert, Drake was instead fully focused on his fans. He sang, chatted and basked in their adulation.

Kick-starting his set with the "9 a.m. in Dallas" freestyle, Drake was nimble for the first 30 minutes of his set: "The Resistance" quickly transitioned into "Karaoke," "Successful," and "Fireworks," before giving way to Young Jeeyz's "Lose My Mind" remix. The Birdman ("Money to Blow") and Rick Ross ("(B.M.F.) Blowin' Money Fast") joined Drizzy later on during his performance, as did his Young Money/Cash Money Billionaires fam, Tyga and Mack Maine.

But despite the big-name cameos, it was those who weren't present that took priority on Tuesday night (September 21). At one point, Drake's DJ, Future, played a stirring Aaliyah tribute. The late singer's "One in a Million," "Miss U" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)" played on the venue's massive speakers and led right into the Aaliyah-sampling "Unforgettable."

Young Money CEO Lil Wayne, though, seemed most unforgettable. During Drake's take on his breakout hit "Best I Ever Had," he urged the audience to shout "Free Weezy" to his "Young Money."

"When I say, 'free,' you say, 'Weezy,' " he chanted with the crowd.

The psychedelic-inspired lights on the stage shot lasers out into the stands and Drake, decked out in cargo pants and army fatigues, beamed as his boss received hearty shouts of approval from the audience.

"You can thank me later!" he yelled as fireworks shot out from behind the stage.

Selena Gomez 'Had To Fight' To Get Katy Perry Song 'Rock God'

'I just loved her style, and she did background vocals on that as well,' Gomez tells MTV News of A Year Without Rain track.

Selena Gomez had many rumored contributors to her A Year Without Rain album, including reported cameos from Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. But of all the ladies rumored to be involved, "California Gurls" singer Katy Perry was the only one who actually showed up.

Gomez said she had to fight tooth and nail to make Perry's cameo happen.

"Katy Perry gave me a song called 'Rock God.' It's one of my favorite songs ever," she told MTV News. "I actually had to fight for that song. I wanted it so bad. It's kind of funky, and I think I used her style and we kind of mixed it up with the producers that I worked with with my style, so we made it a little bit more techno."

Not only did Perry lend her the song, she also lent Gomez vocals on the track. "I just loved her style, and she did background vocals on that as well," she recalled. "So I was very, very blessed on the record, 'cause it's so much fun, and I can't wait to perform it."

How did the Disney princess and the pop star end up working together? "We actually have the same music agent, so whenever she'd have concerts and stuff, I'm a huge fan, so I definitely would go to most of her shows. And I've seen her at a couple of events, so I've talked to her," Gomez explained. "But when it came to music, I didn't want to get in personally. I was like, 'I'll ask through the proper channels and see if she'll give it to me,' and she was thrilled, so I was happy."

Tyga Says Snoop Dogg, Game Showing Him California Love

'I never asked for that West Coast stamp,' Young Money rapper says of fellow Cali MCs blessing his LP.

Celebrity Favorites: Tyga

Tyga just started touring with Drake and he's enjoying a spike in his fanbase as a result of his surprise smash with Chris Brown, "Deuces." The Young Money MC may even go out on the road with Brown later this year. But when conversation turns to his still-untitled second album, Tyga says he's in no rush to deliver it: He has a game plan.

"I'm thinking, I don't wanna set no date on it," the Los Angeles rapper told Mixtape Daily during a recent trip to New York. "I wanna let Nicki [Minaj] do her thing right now. Her album comes out November 23. Christmas is cool for me, January, February. I got songs; all my records and my singles, everything is timed up.

"I just dropped 'I'm on It,' which was a good way to start. But this next record, it's gonna be my official record. That needs to be 'Jam of the Week,' " Tyga said, giving a nod to MTV Jams. "It's called 'Really Raw.' It's me featuring Pharrell, Snoop and Game. The video is outta here — it's gonna be a remix with Diddy screaming on it. It's gonna be crazy. Remember I told you that."

Tyga says the collaboration with Snoop Dogg and Game just "kinda happened." The Pharrell-produced track was already done when Tyga's OG homies decided to jump on it.

"I never asked for that West Coast stamp," he said. "A lot of people don't know I'm from the West Coast. My swag is different. Me being from Young Money, affiliated with them, some people think I'm from down South. They think maybe I'm from New Orleans like them. It's just good to show people and build outside of Young Money, build my brand outside of that. I think [Game and Snoop], they just respected it. I feel like too many people on the West Coast, they're too needy. They feel they need Snoop or Game. I never did any tracks with any West Coast artists. Not because I didn't want to, but because I didn't feel like that's what I had to do in order to get on. I just did music. That took me far enough to where Game and Snoop got on that record."

Tyga revealed that Snoop was the first to bless him with guest vocals.

"The record was already done," Tyga recalled. "Snoop came to the studio and heard it; he got on it. Then the next day, Snoop called Game and said, 'I did a record for the little homie.' Then Game came in and said, 'I'm not just gonna let you have Snoop on it.' It just became classic."

Apart from Snoop, Game and Skateboard P, Chris Breezy and Young Money will also make appearances on Tyga's sophomore LP.

My Chemical Romance's <i>Danger Days</i>: The Perfect Rock Album?

Posted: 22 Sep 2010 03:52 AM PDT

Sure, it doesn't even have a release date yet, but Bigger Than the Sound is already enamored with MCR's latest.
By James Montgomery

It is probably too early to say this, but based on little more than a really awesome trailer and a really long title, I'm going to declare that My Chemical Romance's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is the perfect rock-and-roll album.

Am I being premature in saying this? Most definitely. Danger Days doesn't even have an official release date yet. Am I being hyperbolic? Absolutely. Aside from the few verses of (what I'm assuming) is a song called "Na Na Na" featured in the trailer, I haven't heard a note of what will be on the album. But none of that really matters. Because based on everything that has nothing to do with the actual music, this is already the most perfect rock record of 2010, and perhaps the most perfect in recent history.

And here's why.

It's no secret that I am a fan of ambition and insanity (both of which are why I liked the new Linkin Park album so much), and judging from what I've seen so far, Danger Days is both ambitious and insane, often at the same time. For proof of this, watch the trailer, which features an elaborately leotarded dude roller-skating down an abandoned stretch of California highway, voice-over work from someone named "Dr. Death Defying," a beat-up Trans Am, explosions, gratuitous use of DayGlo leather jackets (and bandanas) and the guys in My Chem choking out dudes in Dracula masks with Nintendo Power Gloves. And that's just in the 70 seconds. There's also the matter of Gerard Way's brand-new flame-red dye job, which sort of makes him look like one of Batman's arch-villains, or perhaps a 23rd-century version of Hayley Williams. Only more awesome.

Simply put, it is insane, a complete reimagining of MCR's entire aesthetic, which, up until this point, had involved mainly black clothing and face paint and was overwhelmingly morose. On Danger Days, they've tossed all that melodrama out the window (of a speeding Trans Am), embracing instead a delightfully brash, downright silly new spirit, one that recalls stuff like "Mad Max," the films of John Carpenter, pulpy, post-apocalyptic zombie flicks, the sartorial splendor of Evel Knievel and even, if one were to get heady about it, Michelangelo Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point."

But regardless of the pedigree of their influences (or lack thereof), the tongue, it would seem, is firmly planted in the cheek this time around, something that — for a band with a reputation as serious as My Chem's — is fairly new, not to mention fairly risky, considering a large portion of what has made them so appealing to their fanbase up to this point has pretty much been the opposite of all that. MCR have always explored the heavier themes — death and loss and sadness and ultimate salvation, to name just a few — and because of that, they've maintained a somewhat spiritual connection with their fans. They are the band whose songs have saved many a teenage life, after all. And now, they are practically cartoon characters — the Fabulous Killjoys, they call themselves — battling schlocky monsters and blasting NES Zappers in the desert. It's not hard to see why this new incarnation might alienate some or, at the very least, take some getting used to.

And then there's the matter of ambition, which the trailer gives us a taste of. Because despite Way's assertions to the contrary, this appears very much to be a concept record, about a band of outlaws (?) patrolling the barren expanses of California, supposedly in the near future, and definitely after some sort of catastrophic event (Nuclear annihilation? Robot holocaust? Both?). The album is called Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, for crying out loud. And while MCR have never shied away from getting conceptual, they appear to really have gone for it here. Whatever they've got cooked up, it is definitely ambitious, and, if the concept really is what I just explained, it ties in rather nicely to a comment Way made last year about the new album being a celebration of life as "an American rock-and-roll band" — only, in this case, they're playing an American rock-and-roll band in the dystopian, bombed-out future. Strangely, it works pretty well.

And the more I think about it, the more I realize that My Chemical Romance basically did everything in their power to make Danger Days the perfect rock album — at least, according to me. Shoot, they practically followed the checklist. Concept records? I love those things. Batch of tunes scrapped because they were reportedly too out there to ever see the light of day? I wrote an entire column about that very topic two years ago. Inter-band strife that led to the departure of a key member (in this case, drummer Bob Bryar)? Boy, sounds like a Pinkerton Effect album to me. Simply put, they couldn't have planned this any better if they'd tried. Danger Days is practically tailor-made for me. No wonder I think it's perfect.

Of course, I realize you are not me. But I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that, if you're not excited for Danger Days, you're probably not a rock-and-roll fan. It is everything you could ask for in a major-label rock album — ambitious and crazy and downright inspiring in its own decidedly weird way — from a band that is fast becoming truly great. Will it all work? Will MCR's fans come along for the ride? That's just part of what makes this whole process so exciting. But, ultimately, that's really not what's important, because everything leading up to this moment has been so good, so incredibly spot-on, that I'm already sold. I don't even need to hear another note to declare Danger Days the most perfect rock album of 2010. And if the music is any good, well, then it may just be the most perfect rock album ever made.

George Orwell once said the essence of being human "is that one does not seek perfection." But George Orwell doesn't know crap about rock-and-roll bands. Whether they were seeking it or not, My Chemical Romance may very well have stumbled on pure perfection this time out. They just had to put on tight leather pants and hunt down vampires in the desert to do it.

Will you follow My Chemical Romance in their new direction? Let us know in the comments!

'Eastbound And Down' Cast Talks Marilyn Manson's Cameo Bid

'I think it's fantastic,' says executive producer Will Ferrell, while star Danny McBride has a bizarre acting tip for the rocker.

If fans thought news of Marilyn Manson's "Eastbound and Down" superfandom was surprising, then they may have been more shocked to learn that Manson is vying for a cameo on the zany HBO series. Manson told MTV News he'd like to step into the shoes of awkward-yet-eager sidekick Stevie (played by Steve Little). So we asked some of the folks attached to the show for their thoughts on Manson's small-screen aspirations.

"Honestly, I'm honored," the show's executive producer/ writer/ director Jody Hill told us at the star-studded season-two premiere. "I saw Marilyn Manson open up for Nine Inch Nails when I was in high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina," Hill recalled. "So the fact that he's heard of the Kenny Powers series is pretty awesome."

We then informed Hill that Manson would love to play Stevie in some sort of guest role. "Really?" Hill laughed. "OK, great, I'd love that. He can play his brother."

Series star Danny McBride, who plays Kenny Powers, had an alternative suggestion: "I imagine he could just cut [actor] Steve Little's flesh off and wear it, and just kind of be him," McBride offered, before adding that he had considered wearing a Manson-inspired getup himself. "I was going to come here dressed as Marilyn Manson but I pu--ied out at the last moment."

"Eastbound" 's executive producers (and famed "Funny or Die" founders), Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, were similarly enthused about Manson's enthusiasm. "I think it's fantastic," Ferrell told us.

Meanwhile, McKay seemed to suspect before anyone else did that the show would appeal to the "Beautiful People" singer. "I don't want to say I took it for granted, but I gotta say the first episode of this I saw, I thought, 'If Marilyn Manson doesn't like this then we've done something wrong.' "

"Yeah," Ferrell chimed in.

What do you think of Marilyn Manson being a big "Eastbound and Down" fan? Should he make a cameo? Let us know in the comments!

If only the Germans had a say in what happens on "Dancing With the Stars." They might have been able to save the Hoff. The first casualty from season 11 of the popular dance competition, David Hasselhoff — he's really big in Germany — was eliminated on Tuesday night's results show.

"Hey, we tried," Hasselhoff said when his name was called. "It's been a great ride," the 58-year-old added before he and partner Kym Johnson performed their cha-cha again.

"I feel bad for Kym, because she worked so hard to try and get me where I was going," he continued. "I'm just so proud that my daughters are here and got to see me go this far. So it's great."

Hasselhoff landed in the bottom two, alongside Disney kid Kyle Massey and his partner, Lacey Schwimmer. And the men took the rest of the lowest spots, as Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Kurt Warner also seemed like they might be threatened with elimination at one point. (Both were saved by higher combined scores.)

There was plenty of live music on Tuesday night, too, leading up to the announcement of who would be sent home. Santana performed "Oye Como Va" and Daughtry performed their single, "September," from their Leave This Town album, while the "DWTS" pros danced. Santana also performed "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with India.Arie.

Next week, the celebrities hit the dance floor again. Left to compete are Brandy, top-scorer Jennifer Grey, Florence Henderson, former L.A. Laker Rick Fox, football legend Warner, Massey, "The Hills" alum Audrina Patridge, "Jersey Shore" star the Situation, singer Michael Bolton, comedian Margaret Cho and Bristol Palin.

Do you think the Hoff should have been eliminated from "DWTS"? Tell us in the comments!

Did Lady Gaga Have Any Impact On 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Vote?

In spite of DADT vote stalling in Senate, supporters of repeal say Gaga's tireless advocacy has garnered issue global recognition.
By Gil Kaufman

There are many different ways for celebrities to leverage their notoriety to help a cause. They can play a concert, write a check, make a PSA or, as in the case of actor Sean Penn, live in a meager tent in an earthquake-ravaged country for six months and run their own relief organization. But few stars have given as much in as short a time as Lady Gaga has to the cause of repealing the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

"The reality is that on Saturday night we were looking at what we could do on Monday, knowing that even if we sent out an alert to our base of 80,000 supporters, we'd be talking to the same people," said Trevor Thomas, spokesperson for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a national organization dedicated to ending DADT. "We wanted to expand our reach and reach more people nationally and, more than anything, the two swing senators [in Maine] who could give us a chance."

The SLDN quickly hatched a plan to organize a rally in Maine on Monday in an attempt to get swing-vote Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to possibly change their votes on the repeal. That's where Lady Gaga came in. The pop icon had walked the white carpet at the VMAs with four SLDN members, shouted them out from the stage, turned her website over to the issue and posted public video pleas about the issue. When word came of this last-minute appeal, once again, she stepped up.

According to Thomas, the singer finished a show in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday night, hopped on a bus and took a 15-hour ride to Maine, personally writing her address on the way.

"The dedication from her was amazing," he said. "She wrote the speech, did the research and talked to people, and it did exactly what we need to do — highlight the issue to young people and others who might not have heard about this cause. But most importantly, we did it in this key area we needed it in."

The Gaga speech garnered massive local and national coverage for the issue, with stories in the Denver Post, USA Today and The New York Times, among others. "You can work for months to place one story in the Times' print section, and even if politics prevail and we lose the vote, more people know about the DADT repeal than did yesterday," Thomas said.

And while Gaga's mighty push to lock in the necessary votes didn't save the day when the crucial Senate vote took place on Tuesday (September 21), Thomas said her help undoubtedly had a huge impact and put a global spotlight on the policy.

From the night Gaga first spoke out on the repeal at the 2010 VMAs and redirected traffic from her official website to the SLDN site until 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Thomas said, 314,446 people clicked to the "take action" tab, which sent them to a site listing the phone numbers where U.S. senators could be reached about the vote. While it's unknown how many of those clicks turned into actual phone calls, Thomas said he was "100 percent sure" that the site would not have gotten nearly that many visits without Gaga's efforts.

The total number of visitors was nearly four times the amount of supporters SLDN had gathered pre-Gaga, but Thomas pointed out an even more impressive number. During that same two-week period, the pages on the SLDN website with background information on DADT got 520,298 page views. In contrast, during the first two weeks of the month, the site had 13,000 visitors and 30,000 page views.

"There are many people who are high-profile who speak out in a positive manner on LGBT issues," Thomas said. "But the difference here is she asked, 'What can I do?' at a time when it was critically important for the passage of our bill. Not only did she say that, but she asked how and when to do it. When you look at the past couple of weeks, you see not just strategic tweets but the video address that hit days before the critical vote and which was driving many calls to the Senate switchboard. I don't know of many entertainers who at the critical moment for a bill would stop their website and direct it to a 'take action' page for a relatively small group trying to push an issue crucially important to servicemembers and those who support them."

Before Tuesday's vote, Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — the Nevada senator exchanged DADT-related tweets last week with Gaga — said the Democratic boss welcomed Mother Monster's advocacy. "We appreciate the support of Lady Gaga and her supporters," Manley said. "Sometimes that can have an impact, especially when you are as apparently committed as she is to the cause."

Even with all of Gaga's work, CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said Gaga's appearance at Monday's rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes; the final 56-43 tally helped ensure that the Senate would not open a DADT repeal discussion during its current session. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal, but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons.

'Breaking Dawn' Won't Be Filmed In 3-D

But 'Twilight' studio Summit Entertainment says it's too early to tell if the films will be converted to 3-D in post-production.
By Kara Warner

Despite the continued popularity and rush for film studios to make everything in three dimensions, "Breaking Dawn" — both Part 1 and Part 2 — will not be shot in 3-D.

Gossip Cop broke the news via a source at Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the mega-successful franchise. "Neither film is being shot in 3-D," the source told the site, adding that any other buzz from the rumor mill was "fabricated."

A rep from Summit confirmed the story to MTV News.

Although the two parts of "Dawn" will not be filmed in 3-D, this does not mean that post-production 3-D effects and/or conversion won't be added. It is reportedly too early in production for the studio to make that call.

We already know that a few of the castmembers would be up for a few 3-D elements. Kristen Stewart told MTV News in June that Bella in 3-D would be "awesome."

"I'm probably speaking out of line or whatever, but I think it would be awesome," she said. "Nobody knows what it's like to look through the eyes of a vampire. What if [Bella] opens her eyes to this extraordinary world? It could be cool."

Taylor Lautner seemed a bit more cautious about such an ambitious approach.

"Usually, 3-D is best when it takes you into another world," he explained. "I could see it going both ways. As long as we have the story line down and as long as we bring what was written on the pages in the book to life, then we'll be fine no matter what we do."

Can Audrina Patridge Or The Situation Win 'Dancing With The Stars'?

Pundits praise 'Jersey Shore' star's 'over-the-top personality' and 'cachet.'
By Jocelyn Vena

This season of "Dancing With the Stars" contains a battle between two of MTV's most recognizable faces: "Jersey Shore" star the Situation and "Hills" star Audrina Patridge. One week in, Audrina has fared better in the score department, racking up a 19 to the Situation's 15. But since it's still early in the competition, it's anybody's game — and some pop-culture experts are placing their bets on the man who made "GTL" a household term.

"Audrina was clearly the better dancer last night and got hosed with the scores. She was definitely hurt going first. It's a tough call on the Sitch right now because he only practiced for five days, but I think he can get better," explained Joyce Eng, staff editor at TVGuide.com. "I think his cachet can get him through a few rounds, but he needs to really pick it up to go far."

Personality is more of a factor than dancing skill, according to David Caplan, an entertainment journalist who has worked at celeb magazines like People and Star. And, he says, that might help the Situation in the end. "The Situation may have a better chance than Audrina since he is a fan favorite," he said. "He's much more recognizable. He's sexy. He's hunky. He's on a show right now that's hot. With Audrina, you know her time as a 'Hills' star is waning now."

Us Weekly reporter Brad Witter isn't ready to give anyone the crown yet. "It's hard to say. I think that the Situation has the bigger personality and America definitely responds to that. Look at Cloris Leachman; America kept her on because of her personality. The Situation had five days to rehearse and he compensated for it with his over-the-top personality. He's an entertainer.

"I think, obviously, Audrina, she showed that she was the better dancer," he added. "But she falls a little flat sometimes. I think she's taking it very seriously, but she's kind of dull."

Eng noted that the reality-TV backgrounds of the Situation and Audrina make their roads to the top a little tough. "It's difficult to gauge reality stars' fanbases. For every person who's a fan, there are probably five more people who hate them or their show. They're not as universally beloved as athletes, actors or stars — like Jennifer [Grey] and Florence [Henderson], who are going to have fans in their corner no matter what," she said. "The first few weeks will be telling for [the Situation and Audrina], especially if either of them land in the bottom two or three."

Fans can't get enough of hip-hop's golden child. Before the curtains were raised for the second night of Drake's Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour, fans chatted with MTV News about what exactly brought them out to Miami's James L. Knight Center on Tuesday night.

"Oh my God," Ymaday Marichal said. "I've been waiting for this moment since summer."

Marichal's friend, Lindsey Perez, explained the measures the pair took to ensure they had seats at the sold-out show. "We bought the tickets, like, as soon as possible. I had to wake up at 9 to get the tickets and, really, I'm hoping that he does really good," she said.

Light Dreams is Drake's second headlining trek, after his extended Away From Home Tour earlier this year. And fans were clear about what they were hoping his set list would look like.

"Personally, I can relate to Drake the most — his music, everything he's doing right now," said fan Luis Delvalle. "He's on top of the hip-hop game ... Drizzy's the man." Delvalle went on, "Honestly, I'm a fan of Drake everything ... I want him to do his whole album tonight," he said, referring to the rapper's successful Thank Me Later debut.

Other fans expressed similar sentiments, praising Drake's overall style.

"I just really wanted to come out. I like his music. I like his collabs a lot," Josh Matthews told us. "And I just like the way he puts it together. The show tonight is going to be amazing."

Lady Gaga 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Speech 'Resonated' With Maine Crowd

'She wasn't paid to come here and speak; she did it because she felt like she needed to,' one supporter tells MTV News at rally.

PORTLAND, Maine — On Monday, thousands packed into Deering Oaks Park to witness Lady Gaga's rather spur-of-the-moment speech in support of the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." Many of them were students at the nearby University of Southern Maine, active in the school's Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity, and they were understandably amazed that one of the biggest pop stars on the planet had come to their town to speak on their behalf.

But, as MTV News learned in speaking with some of them, the event had a much deeper meaning too. As it turns out, many of them also had a personal stake in the ongoing debate over "don't ask" — which failed to get enough Senate votes on Tuesday (September 21) to spur a formal debate — and to have Gaga in their corner meant more than they could express.

"Her speech really resonated with me because, actually, this summer, I thought about joining the military, but because I'm gay, I can't," USM student Kelly Golek said. "If it's repealed, there's a very good chance I will [enlist]. So I thought this whole event was amazing, because you really don't see something like this. Like, what other pop star would come out and do this? She's very brave, and I was totally moved by that speech."

"It really resonated with me, because I've actually been considering the military, because I took my ASVAB [military aptitude exam], and I got an incredibly high score, so I could basically do anything I wanted to in the Navy," Ellen McDonald said. "But because I'm a lesbian, I'm not able to do that at the moment. So, [her speech] really touched me, because those are my hopes and dreams."

And even those who weren't prohibited from serving openly still felt a personal connection to Gaga's speech, because, the way they see it, she's lending her voice to the voiceless.

"She wasn't paid to come here and speak; she did it because she felt like she needed to. [She said] 'I'm coming to Maine ... be there,' " Chris Johnson said. "It makes you feel like you have a voice, because she takes the issue and says, 'I will be your voice, because I know you're not being heard right now.' She's the voice of this generation that's not old enough to vote, but we have different points of view from the generation that raised us."

"There are celebrities that do things to help humanity, but Lady Gaga really does things," USM student Marepheen Berry said. "She has a way of putting forth her messages. She shocks people, and that's what I like about her: She shocks people, and it really opens up their eyes and turns heads."

Of course, there were also those in the crowd who, while active in the fight to repeal "don't ask," were mainly there to see Lady Gaga. And, really, can you blame them?

"I think it's unbelievable. I was in shock when we first heard. I don't even know how to describe it," USM freshman Joseph Sibley laughed. "When we found out, I was like, 'There's no way, nobody ever comes to Maine, and nobody ever talks to us.' ... And I'm glad I came. It was awesome."

'Jersey Shore' Stars 'Support' The Situation On 'Dancing With The Stars'

'He can't really dance, but I know he can fist-pump,' Sammi tells MTV News.

Though Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino was fresh to death on "Dancing With the Stars" — with clean lines in his 'do and a shiny dress shirt revealing a lot of skin — his dance skills were borderline dead-on-arrival. The "Jersey Shore" star and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, found themselves in a three-way-tie for the lowest score on Monday night's season premiere.

No matter! His reality-show pals have his back. While Sammi and Vinny might not have much faith in his toe-tapping talents, they're supporting him all the way.

"I wish Mike the best of luck with 'Dancing With the Stars,' " Sammi told MTV News shortly before the show went live. "He can't really dance, but I know he can fist-pump, and I'm sure that Karina is gonna whip some sense into him. So hopefully he does well. I wish him the best of luck. I'm there to support him. I hope he does well."

Sitch certainly tried. Boogying to a version of Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart," he mixed in a few of his time-tested club moves with some '80s-style shuffling. But the judges were not impressed. "You've got the guns, but not the ammunition," head judge Len Goodman declared.

Vinny probably wouldn't disagree, though he's pulling for his roommate to make everyone proud. "Situation doesn't really have dance skills, but that show really isn't about having dance skills," he told us. "It's pretty serious, what they do on it. It's like real ballroom dancing. If Mike can follow the directions of his partner and he can go to practice every day and get it down — it's really just how much learning capacity you have. You can be not a good dancer at all, but you can also learn how to do it.

"Hopefully he does learn the steps and goes through with it," he added. "We'll support him."

'Waiting For Superman' Can Bring 'Real Change,' Stars Say At Premiere

'A lot of people drop off their kids and hope for the best when they go to school,' Cheryl Hines tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES — It's already taken the Sundance Film Festival by storm — both with critics and audiences — creating buzz from within the U.S. Department of Education, and it has found major-league celeb support from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. So what more can "Waiting for Superman," Davis Guggenheim's glaring examination of our nation's school system do?

MTV News hit up the film's L.A. premiere Monday to find out.

"The movie has a chance to help change our schools," Guggenheim said. "We really need to do it. I think our schools are in big trouble — not just in schools 'over there'; schools everywhere are in trouble. It's a great film, because it brings people together to see it, and it also shows people that it's possible to give every kid in America a great education. That's what's so exciting: It brings people together around this issue [to] make real change."

"Superman" supporter L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa agreed, equating the film's impact on education to that of Guggenheim's last film, "An Inconvenient Truth."

"This movie has got to be a catalyst for real change. It's got to do for education what 'An Inconvenient Truth' did for climate change and the struggle to educate people about global warming," Villaraigosa said. "This is the pre-eminent challenge facing America. It is the civil-rights issue of our time. When you look at the kids in urban schools, the level with which they're dropping out and the abysmal success rate of our urban public schools."

"I think this film and our show 'School Pride' will be eye-opening for a lot of people in this country," actress and "School Pride" host/ executive producer Cheryl Hines said. "I think a lot of people have no idea how bad it is, and I think a lot of people drop off their kids and hope for the best when they go to school. Now is the time to really show people what is happening and inspire them to do something about it."

Shia LaBeouf Sees 'Positives And Negatives' To 'Transformers' Re-Casting

Megan Fox replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a 'new set of eyes,' actor says.

"Strange" is how Megan Fox describes the way she'll probably be feeling when she hunkers down into her seat to take in Shia LaBeouf and "Transformers 3" next summer. The 24-year-old actress was ousted from the production in a stunning turn of events in May, only to be replaced by Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

And while Fox told MTV News that she "might be a little jealous when I see somebody kissing my Shia," LaBeouf acknowledged that there are both upsides and downsides to smooching with another actress while alien robots battle around them.

"I think there's positives and negatives to her not being [in the movie]," said LaBeouf, who was at the Toronto Film Festival to promote "Wall Street 2." "It's awesome that we get the discovery again. I think when everybody's vetted and everybody's been through these wars, then that discovery of the first film is nonexistent. It's kind of beautiful in that we get a new set of eyes, a fresh set of eyes for the audience to vibe with. So you get the discovery again, which is something that wouldn't happen if Megan came back."

Yet he still counts Fox as a good friend, and praised her turns in the first two "Transformers" flicks. As for Huntington-Whiteley, who will make her acting debut in the new film, LaBeouf said she's "doing great," though there's little he could do to prepare her for the experience of working with famously fiery director Michael Bay.

"You can only do so much," he laughed. "Fight or flight. A tap on the back and a 'Good luck!' "

Zach Galifianakis Talks 'It's Kind Of A Funny Story' Directing Duo

'I think they have the same amount of influence,' he says of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Zach Galifianakis is following up his star-making and outrageous role in last year's "The Hangover" with a slightly more subdued turn in "It's Kind of a Funny Story," the latest film from "Half Nelson" writer/director team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

In the film, which is based on the 2006 semiautobiographical novel by Ned Vizzini, Galifianakis plays Bobby, a patient in the psych ward of the Brooklyn Argenon Hospital, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist), a potentially suicidal 16-year-old who checks himself into the hospital.

When we caught up with Galifianakis recently, we asked him how having two directors changed the filmmaking process and if he had any questions for the directing duo before he signed onto the project.

"I had a few questions. One of them was: 'When are the lunch breaks?' 'How long are the lunch breaks?' and 'Is this a Pixar film?' Because those are my three rules," he joked. "No, the script was good, I really liked the directors, and that's kind of what I based it on."

Regarding Fleck and Boden's directing style, Galifianakis said the duo were very organized yet laid-back at the same time.

"Ryan does most of the talking, and Anna is in the background a little bit," he explained. "But equally, I think they have the same amount of influence, but they're very, very good directors. They're soft-spoken and nice. It was a pleasure working with them."

"It's Kind of a Funny Story" opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 8 and also features Viola Davis, Lauren Graham and up-and-comer Emma Roberts.

Ryan Reynolds Likens Filming 'Buried' To 'A Fever Dream'

Posted: 21 Sep 2010 02:37 AM PDT

'I would have been a fool to not pursue this with everything I had,' he tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Props to Ryan Reynolds for stepping out of his standard zany comedy and blockbuster action film roles and into the intense — and claustrophobia-inducing — thriller "Buried." The entire film takes place inside a wooden coffin buried under the sand of the Iraqi desert. Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a desperate man trying to escape, and he is the only actor shown onscreen.

When we caught up with Reynolds and his "Buried" director, Rodrigo Cortes, we wondered what kind of prep the "Green Lantern" actor did to get ready to be in that box for so long.

"This is the only film I've ever done where I did not rehearse a moment of it before stepping onto the set," Reynolds said. "I just don't know if you could. Who wants to? It would be awful to try and rehearse this at home and try to express all of these different kinds of emotions in a close-up.

"It's just something you've gotta do when you're out there, and then it will feel like a fever dream," he continued. "And that's what it was. I walked away thinking it felt like I had a weird nightmare."

So would Reynolds rather get back in a box for a sequel or do another "Van Wilder" movie?

"Gosh, that's a good question," he said. "I'll take another film in a box, because the reward is pretty great doing a film like this."

Speaking of rewards, Reynolds' director had nothing but the highest praise for his star.

"[Ryan is] an actor able to develop very deep and very committed emotions with very small things, in a very organic way," Cortes said. "It's impossible to catch him lying. He never acts; he always is. It's amazing. It's so heartbreaking."

He went on to compare Reynolds to one of the most memorable actors in Hollywood history: Cary Grant.

"He has an alien sense of timing. I haven't seen anyone like that since Cary Grant, so it's a gift for a director," Cortes said. "So from the very first moment, he was a long shot, he was going to say no, it was between 'The Proposal' and 'Green Lantern,' so come on, is he going to come to Barcelona to our little box? But for some reason, he said yes. I still wonder why."

A humbled Reynolds seemed flattered by the compliments. "That is high praise. I've taken it with a grain of salt or a crate of Valium," he laughed. "It was a unique opportunity, and I would have been a fool to not pursue this with everything I had. It was just such an amazing script with an amazing filmmaker and something that had never, ever been done before."

Watching "Buried" with an audience, Reynolds said, is as unique as filming the project. "I've never been a part of a film where you walk into the theater and everybody takes a deep breath before the credits start rolling and you don't exhale until the end," he said. "It's just amazing."

Lindsay Lohan Nominated For New Brat Pack By 'Breakfast Club' Cast

'I hope that no one gets that mantle put on them,' Judd Nelson says at movie's 25th anniversary screening.

In February of 1985, the young hot-shot actors soon to be dubbed the Brat Pack assembled in Los Angeles for the premiere of their brand-new flick, "The Breakfast Club." A then-16-year-old Molly Ringwald settled into her seat with an eye on heading home to do homework afterward. Meanwhile, Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez where nowhere to be seen.

"Emilio and I were in the bathroom throwing up from sheer nerves," Nelson recalled. "It was already playing and we walked out like, 'We can't watch this!' We knew it was a great script, but you don't know if the public will think that way."

Just over 25 years later, a considerably less nervous Nelson gathered with his cohorts to celebrate the film's silver anniversary and to honor the memory of Hughes, who passed away in August 2009 at the age of 59. And as the cast (minus Estevez) walked the red carpet outside the Paris Theatre in New York, they spoke to MTV News about which young actors have taken over the pop culture mantle of the Brat Pack.

"I have to say Lindsay Lohan is a really, really talented actress, and my heart goes out to her," Ringwald told us. "I really wish the press would lay off of her and that somebody would step up and really help her."

"Lindsay Lohan!" seconded Ally Sheedy, before adding, "There are all the cool 'Harry Potter' kids!"

Hughes became inextricably bound up with the Brat Pack back in the day, writing and directing films like "Sixteen Candles," "Pretty in Pink" and, of course, "Breakfast Club." Anthony Michael Hall, who first collaborated with Hughes for 1983's "Vacation," noted how a new generation of directors has risen up after Hughes to address similar issues of alienation and slackerdom.

"Judd Apatow does great work. Kevin Smith does great work," he said. "In terms of the young talent in the industry today, I salute them. The world has changed so much, and it's more competitive than ever."

For his part, Nelson remains wary, even 25 years later, of the Brat Pack label. "I hope that no one gets that mantle put on them," he said. "I'm not a fan of that term. I think people look back on that term in a cuddly way, but I still think it's reprehensible. I hope that no one is painted with such a broad brush."

Justin Bieber may have recently insisted he's too busy for girls, but he seems to have found time in his schedule for one lucky girl. The pop star was reportedly snapped kissing his "Baby" video co-star and current My World Tour opening act, Jasmine Villegas.

While the pair have been romantically linked for some time now, both have denied a romance. Photos of the pair caught in a lip lock were posted on TMZ on Tuesday (September 21), and it may be the evidence Bieber's fans needed to confirm the two are more than just friends. According to TMZ, the photo was snapped on September 9 in Venice, California, around the same time Bieber landed in Los Angeles for his VMA appearance.

Although the photos of the pair in the backseat of a Honda were taken weeks ago, they only recently surfaced online. According to TMZ, they were taken by a Canadian tourist who spotted the singers. A rep for Bieber could not be reached for comment.

Villegas, 16, is currently on the road with Bieber, but fans may also recognize her from her guest turn as his love interest in the bowling-themed video for "Baby." Recently signed to Sony, Villegas was once a member of the girl group School Gyrls. She also has cameos in Bieber and Sean Kingston's "Eenie Meenie" video and Kanye West's for "Jesus Walks." The teen singer also has two solo videos of her own: one for "I Own This" and the other for "Serious."

When asked about his relationship status this month, Bieber told MTV News, "I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age. Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl ... we're constantly traveling and one girl's not gonna really [work]. You can't really have one girl. I don't really have any crushes at the moment. ... Right now, the best thing is [that we're] just teenagers having fun doing what we love. We're just staying ourselves and remaining humble."

Do you think and Justin and Jasmine would make a good couple? Let us know in the comments!

'X-Men: First Class' Star James McAvoy Wants To 'Bury' Patrick Stewart's Professor X

New film will reportedly reveal how character lost the ability to walk.

Over six years and three films, Patrick Stewart created an unforgettable representation of Professor X: austere, commanding, lacking a single hair on his head. Four years after Stewart's appearance in "X-Men: The Last Stand," a new film in the franchise — "X-Men: First Class" — is in production in England.

James McAvoy faces the challenge of reinventing Professor X for a story that takes place before the character lost his hair or adopted his scholarly nickname.

How is the 31-year-old actor approaching that challenge? "I'm basically going to try and bury Patrick's performance," McAvoy laughed during a conversation with MTV News at the Toronto Film Festival while promoting the historical drama "The Conspirator."

"I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are," he continued. "That means that you have to do them differently and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way. The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve — not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve."

Last month, producer Bryan Signer said that McAvoy's version of the character — here still named simply Charles Xavier — will be , and McAvoy confirmed both those facts for us. "They wanted me to have hair," he said. "They didn't want me to go bald and I walk as well."

Apparently, however, "First Class" will tell the story of how Xavier lost the ability to walk. The film will also go a long way toward explaining how the shaggy-haired Xavier became the stern-faced Professor X.

"I would suggest by the end of the movie and the start of the next movie, it'll be more like what Patrick does," said McAvoy, adding, "Or maybe not. Maybe it will still be in a period of flux, if there is a new movie."
