Linkin Park Promise 'Epic' VMA Performance

LOS ANGELES -- When Linkin Park signed on to perform at the Video Music Awards, they only had one request: They wanted it to be big.

It made sense. After all, this was going to be the first performance of "The Catalyst," the massive, sweeping debut single off their upcoming A Thousand Suns album (in stores Tuesday), and they needed an equally massive -- and sweeping -- stage from which to launch the next chapter in their career.

And though we're not allowed to say just where they'll be performing, suffice it to say, they succeeded in finding the right spot.

"We're really excited about the new music, and this being the first performance, it's a big show for us," LP's Chester Bennington told MTV News. "So we're beyond thrilled that we were able to make it happen."

"It's an epic location and it does fit the tone of the song, and there are definitely themes about this location and the song that tie together," Mike Shinoda told MTV News. " 'The Catalyst' was one of the first demos on our record that really felt like the nucleus of what the record was going to be. ... There's a complexity to the ideas in the song. I think there are layers to the lyrics; there's obviously layers to the music."

And judging from what we saw in rehearsals Saturday night (September 11), the performance is definitely going to match the scope of the song. It's big, it's loud, and it reaches unabashedly for the stars. Which is fitting, because given where the performance is taking place, Linkin Park can practically touch them.

Infer from that what you will. Or not. Because Bennington and Shinoda aren't quite ready to make the big reveal just yet.

"It's going to be really beautiful looking. This is a very unique kind of opportunity for us to play this particular location," Bennington said. "It's not really a place where normally a band would be able to come perform at."

"Personally, I can't wait to meet Shamu," Shinoda added. "Oh sh--, did I say that out loud?"

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

They scored a top-five hit with their "Airplanes" collaboration, but B.o.B and Hayley Williams had never met in person ... until now.

A rehearsal for their 2010 MTV Video Music Awards performance Saturday (September 11) finally united the pair, who recorded their vocals separately and shot a video for the song at different times.

"Whoa, hi!" Williams said to B.o.B as he ran across the stage to embrace the Paramore frontwoman.

Williams and Bobby Ray were actually onstage together while "Airplanes" blasted through the Nokia Theatre speakers, but the lights were turned down and something blocked her view of the rapper.

"Where are you guys?" she asked.

B.o.B spotted Wiliams, also his labelmate, and ran toward her. "We finally met for the first time," he said, turning to the camera excitedly. "I hope I don't mess up."

"I'm gonna trip and fall," Williams said about their big performance. "Catch me, please!"

Then a stage manager broke up the meeting as the stars had to get back to rehearsing the number. They later exchanged numbers, and Hayley offered to join B.o.B at a performance in Los Angeles later that evening, if she can make it.

After a long delay, they had a happy ending.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Nicki Minaj Debuts Some Dance Moves In VMA Rehearsal

'Making the Band' choreographer backs up Young Money queen for pre-show performance.

LOS ANGELES — Nicki Minaj is so popular right now she can shut down the scene anywhere she goes. On Saturday (September 11), her fans who happened to be downtown got a big surprise as Nick rehearsed her VMA pre-show performance, practicing "Your Love" and her brand-new single with will.i.am, "Check It Out."

Although Nicki's performance was outside, fans, members of her entourage, various MTV crewmembers and anyone sitting in one of the J.W. Marriott hotel's lounges could see Nick go to work.

"Get it! Get it!" veteran choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson — who MTV viewers will remember from Diddy's "Making the Band" — yelled after every Minaj "ow ow!" at the beginning of "Check It Out." "Get it, girl!" Gibson encouraged again.

Two female dancers started in front of the crowd and grooved to "Your Love," then there was a reveal of the Young Money queen, who stood with her head down and arms folded. Wearing a pink tank top, black leather jacket and black leggings, Minaj moved forward and danced in sync with her backup ladies.

Expect plenty of movement and plenty of energy come Sunday night. Nicki — who's known for her lyrical acumen and facial expressions (she made those faces in rehearsal too!), but not for dancing — can hold down some steps. "Amaaaazing," Gibson yelled at the end of another run-through.

There were a few mechanical problems with a key piece of equipment for the stage that's also an integral part of Nick's reveal. However, the crew seemed to have the matter under control toward the end of rehearsal.

During her last practice round, Nicki and her dancers switched up the entire beginning of the show. Instead of just playing "Your Love," Nicki went right into "Check It Out." There was also smoke that time and more applause from Nick's biggest cheerleader on Saturday, Laurie Ann.

After the rehearsal, Nicki walked through the lobby taking pictures and even giving a couple of hugs to fans. "Oh my God. She is so real!" one lady said after taking a pic with Nicki.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Justin Bieber Fans (And Skeptics) Weigh In On VMA Nominee

Sixteen-year-old Justin Bieber is up for Best New Artist at the Video Music Awards on Sunday, and while the reaction from his fans may make it seem as if everyone has Bieber Fever, that's not necessarily the case.

As the pop star rehearsed for his VMA performance on Saturday, MTV News took to the streets of Los Angeles to explore the phenomenon, asking fans (and some non-fans) to weigh in on his dreaminess (or lack thereof).

"I'm anti-Bieber," one 20-something told us.

"I've got Bieber Fever — 24/7, nonstop," said another fan from Palm Springs, as her boyfriend nodded in agreement.

One more age-appropriate fan said her friends all have the fever, but she's immune to it. "I don't know if he's not going through puberty or something. It's like, 'heeeeee,' " she said, letting out a high-pitched squeal.

A 20-something Texas football fan said that he was confused when he first heard a Bieber song, but later admitted listening to Bieber's music. "I thought it was a girl at first when I heard it on the radio," he said.

"I love him! I love him!" screamed a fan from Anchorage, Alaska, who revealed it was her nephews who initially got her into Bieber.

"I think I'm too old. I feel kind of creepy," said a Lady Gaga fan from Pittsburgh.

"He is the whole package," the Palm Springs Bieber fan gushed. As for her supportive boyfriend? "That was my girlfriend," he deadpanned to our cameras.

How do you make the MTV Video Music Awards debut of Nicki Minaj, one of the hottest new MCs in the game, even more major? Add one of the most sought-after producers reppin' one of the biggest groups in the world: will.i.am.

When Minaj takes the stage at the VMA pre-show, which kicks off Sunday at 8 p.m. ET live from Los Angeles, she will be joined by the Black Eyed Peas frontman for her first-ever televised performance as a solo artist. Will and Minaj will rip the stage with their peppy hip-pop single "Check It Out."

"I love Nicki," Will told MTV News at the BMI Urban Awards on Friday night. "I love the song that we're doing, 'Check It Out.' She's fresh."

"I am truly honored to be a part of this year's VMAs. Just yesterday I was an underground female rapper. See, Barbz? Dreams do come true," Minaj said about rocking the pre-show, where she'll also perform "Your Love."

Minaj is also vying for her first Moonman at this year's awards. The femcee is up against Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Jason Derülo and Broken Bells for Best New Artist. The sharp-tongued lyricist revealed that nabbing her first VMA nod was an unreal experience.

"I feel like I've died and gone to heaven," Minaj told MTV News in August after learning she was up for some hardware. "I definitely thought I'd get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I'd get a nomination [this year]. ... I didn't even think I'd get invited!"

The Queens MC was especially amped about being recognized as one of the breakout artists of the past year.

"Someone sent me an e-mail saying congratulations and I was like, 'For what?' And they said, 'For the VMA.' And I was like, 'What was I nominated for?' And when they said, 'Best New Artist,' I just started screaming."

Do you think Nicki Minaj will score the Best New Artist trophy? Make your predictions in the comments!

When B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Paramore came together Saturday (September 11) to rehearse their 2010 Video Music Awards performance, the three acts were as relaxed as longtime friends ... it's just that the rehearsal was the first time they all actually met.

B.o.B and Williams' long-delayed introduction (the two recorded their top-five hit "Airplanes" separately and shot the video at different times as well) was quick and pleasant, then the two chatted it up like they were classmates hanging out on the playground.

Bruno Mars also met Williams for the first time; all three acts are labelmates through Warner Music Group.

The Hawaiian crooner was cool as a California night behind his piano during the rehearsals, busting out impromptu covers of Drake's "Find Your Love" and Cee-Lo's "F--- You," which he had a hand in co-writing via his production outfit, the Smeezingtons.

"Hey, hey, hey," Bruno Mars sang while he gently struck the piano keys. "I better find your loving, I better find your love."

Not to be outdone, though, B.o.B also got in on the act. While Bruno Mars keyed a "Nothin' on You" groove, the Atlanta rapper began his best Notorious B.I.G. impersonation, busting into Biggie's breakout hit, "Juicy."

"It was all a dream," he rapped. "I used to read Word Up! magazine."

Deadmau5 Marvels At 'Scope' Of VMA House-Artist Gig

Posted: 11 Sep 2010 05:24 AM PDT

Jason Derülo, Travie McCoy and Robyn will join 'mau5 on Sunday.
By James Montgomery

By now, you've probably read all about VMA house artist deadmau5's "cube," a high-tech, highfalutin bit of electronic bric-a-brac that will be prominently displayed during Sunday night's telecast.

But what you might not know is what's inside the cube — and, really, we didn't either. So when we caught up with the 'mau5 during his VMA rehearsals Saturday (Septmber 11), we decided to find out. We've got this thing covered from all angles, after all.

"We had an Orange Julius machine [in there], but we had to take it out because it kept tripping the breaker," he laughed. "And then, well, now it's just mostly analog equipment, framed photos of my cat. [It's] a little bit like home."

When we looked inside the cube to verify his claims — like we said, all angles — there wasn't a picture of a cat up there. But there was a whole lot of electronics, not to mention some supremely eye-catching LED displays on the outside. We were totally fascinated, but not as much as deadmau5 himself.

"I didn't really get the scope of it all until I walked into the rehearsal hall," he said. "[I] saw it all set up, and I was like, 'Damn.' "

Indeed. And while the cube is pretty great, it's only half of what deadmau5 will bring to the show. As the house artist, he's responsible for reworking hits from Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn for a series of performances, not to mention remixing songs by the Black Keys, La Roux and others to be played in and out of commercial breaks. It's a pretty big job. Luckily, deadmau5 had some time in Spain to prep for it all. Sort of.

"I had no idea [who I'd be working with]," he said. "They were just like, 'Do you want to do this?' And I said, 'Yep,' and I didn't know what it was. And my management had sent me off to Spain ... and I was like, 'Well, whatever it is, it's probably going to be, like, a five-second cameo, so if they need me to do something, send my computer over,' " he said. "And so I get to Spain ... and they're like, 'Uh, yeah, you have to do eight remixes and three performances.' So what I had to do was take the cover off the hot tub and a mattress off one of the beds and, like, surround my computer. I had to make a little fort, because I didn't think that I would need a studio, but I really did."

Best New Artist nominee says idea for laser-lit gloves came in a dream.

VMA newbie and rising star Jason Derülo has a lot going for him these days. In addition to his two Video Music Award nominations — Best New Artist and Best Male Video — he's performing with VMA house artist deadmau5 on Sunday. And he'll be doing so with green laser-lit gloves, which were inspired, he says, by a dream.

"I have a lot of dreams about what I should be doing, what thing I should be doing onstage," Derülo told MTV News. "So when I have these visions, I'm like, 'Aw, that's really cool,' and I try to make them come to life."

Regarding those gloves, the "In My Head" singer said he made it all happen himself. "I went to a lighting company and I was like, 'Hey, make something like this.' " And they did.

Derülo described his VMA honors as a "wonderful beginning."

"Everything that's happened thus far has just [fallen] into place perfectly," he said. "I couldn't have written a better story if I tried. I can consider this just a brilliant start. It's really exciting, especially when you've been watching it your whole life," he added. "I watch the VMAs every year, my whole life."

As for Derülo's VMA partner, deadmau5, he wouldn't divulge any specifics about plans for Sunday. But he did admit to MTV News that he had no idea how big the house-artist job was when he signed up.

Travie McCoy is about to get his rock star on.

We caught up with the Gym Class Heroes frontman just as he finished rehearsing for Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, where he'll perform with house artist deadmau5, and he shared a bit with us about the feeling of performing his hit single "Billionaire" up onstage.

"It's like a U2 concert in here, man. I feel like Bono up there," he told MTV News on Saturday (September 11). "Me and deadmau5 got together, went in on 'Billionaire.' He definitely took it, and it just turned into [he makes beatbox sounds] these crazy noises I never heard before. It's like this is where it's at."

McCoy is one of three musicians, also including Robyn and Jason Derülo, performing with the house-music icon.

When we caught up with him Friday, prior to the rehearsal, McCoy told us he was stoked to see Eminem open the VMAs and was "really excited to also see what deadmau5 is doing. I know what I'm doing with him, but I'm excited to see what he's doing with everyone else."

Deadmau5 follows performers like Wale, Mark Ronson, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM, all of whom kept the pace of the awards show as VMA house artists.

Other 2010 VMA performers include Kanye West, Justin Bieber, B.o.B, Drake and Linkin Park.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Steve-O Says 'Jackass 3D' Shows 'Totally Different Me'

'Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful,' he says of 'scary' stunts in flick previewing at Sunday's VMAs.

Fans won't have to wait until October 15 to get a taste of the mayhem set to take place in "Jackass 3D." An exclusive clip from the flick will premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards, where the cast will also be presenting on Sunday.

One of the movie's stars, Steve-O, is super excited for fans to check out the preview.

"I can't wait. It's going to be awesome. We made a great movie. Everybody's gonna love it. People are gonna be waiting to see how being sober and filming 'Jackass' is different [for me]," he told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. "Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful, more scary and the first thing I say is, 'I'm Steve-O, why do I have to be Steve-O?' "

He wouldn't get too specific about his favorite part of the movie, but Steve-O did note that the film starts with one very eye-catching scene. "I think that after the opening credits, like, the first scene that I'm in, I think it's pretty great," he said. "It's just awesome. It's a good movie."

While doing many of the painful stunts in "Jackass 3D" proved to be quite the challenge for a now-sober Steve-O, he was certainly up for it.

"I was eager to do as much as I could. I, unlike Johnny Knoxville and some of the other guys, was feeling pretty sure I didn't want to risk paralysis or death," he joked. "Knoxville just needs to risk paralysis and death, but that being the case, I was really eager to get involved in as much stuff as I could, and I think I'm in this new movie more than either of the first two. It was a totally different me and it was a real blessing to do that."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Double VMA nominee Jason Derülo is pretty jazzed for Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, where he's up for Best New Artist and Best Male Video. Derülo, who will also be performing with deadmau5, thinks those nods have kick-started his career in just the right way.

"It's just a wonderful beginning," he told MTV News at an event on Friday before his Music Box Theater performance in Los Angeles. "Everything that's happened thus far has just fell into place perfectly. I couldn't have written a better story if I tried. I can consider this just a brilliant start."

The "In My Head" singer said the nominations have allowed him to go from VMA viewer to VMA-nominated performer. "It's really exciting," Derülo said, "especially when you've been watching it your whole life. I watch the VMAs every year, my whole life."

As for his competition, the singer isn't worried about actually taking home any Moonmen. Instead, it's all about making it far enough to be recognized and nominated.

"I'm not really worried about it at all. I'm really honored that I was nominated," he said last month. "If somebody wants to put me in that category — it's amazing. To come where I came from to be nominated is really special in its own right," he added. "I already feel like a winner. The fact that I can share my music and the world will listen is enough."

In the Best New Artist category, he'll face off against Justin Bieber ("Baby"), Ke$ha ("Tik Tok"), Nicki Minaj (for her Sean Garrett collabo "Massive Attack") and indie supergroup Broken Bells ("The Ghost Inside"). And in the Best Male Video category, he has some stiff competition from Eminem ("Not Afraid"), Usher ("OMG"), Drake ("Find Your Love") and B.o.B ("Airplanes").

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. 'Just to go out and have fun, man. It's a really no-pressure environment,' singer says.
By Kelley L. Carter

Five years ago, it was a fresh-faced Jesse McCartney who was an MTV Video Music Awards virgin. He was up for Best Pop Video for "Beautiful Soul," and says that even though he didn't win, it was an exciting moment for him in his burgeoning music career.

So, what's Jesse McCartney's advice for this year's VMA newbies?

"Just to go out and have fun, man. It's a really no-pressure environment," he told MTV News. "It's one of the most relaxing and fun awards shows, I think, of every year. You can always anticipate the unexpected. It's going to be a great show and I look forward to seeing it."

McCartney, who is finishing up his next, as-yet-untitled album — he says he's going to reveal the name of the album on Twitter — is gearing up to drop its first single, "Shake," later this month.

The singer is recording in Los Angeles with producers Sean Garrett (Usher, Beyoncé, Jay-Z), Kevin Rudolf (Lil Wayne, Leona Lewis), Young Yonny (Trey Songz) and Ammo, and said the album will have a more urban feel to it.

For now, he'll kick back and watch who's going to bring home the big awards on Sunday night. And yes, he does have his favorites.

"Obviously, Lady Gaga is going to come through and just [clean] house. Usher is back. Dude's back! And he's on top of the world and I love it," McCartney says. "He's one of the greatest R&B singers of the last decades, so kudos to him."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

B.o.B Promises 'Spectacular' VMA Performance With Hayley Williams

'I'm gonna attempt to levitate,' the 'Airplanes' MC jokes about first-ever set with Paramore collaborator on Sunday.
By Jayson Rodriguez

The clock is counting down to Sunday's VMAs, and for Video of the Year nominees B.o.B and Hayley Williams it means finally meeting for the first time.

The two collaborated on the rapper's top-five hit "Airplanes" but have never met — they recorded the song and shot their parts for the video separately. They're set to meet Saturday afternoon (September 11) in Los Angeles when they rehearse for their performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards.

"I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular," B.o.B told MTV News on Friday about anticipation for his appearance with the Paramore singer.

B.o.B is also set to perform with Bruno Mars, bringing their #1 collaboration "Nothin' on You" to the Nokia Theatre. And the combination performance, comprised of the two smash collabos, is among the most-anticipated. The Atlanta lyricist is excited about his prime-time performance and said he was thinking about a new wrinkle for his set.

"I'm gonna attempt to levitate," he joked. "I don't know if the dynamics of the room will allow me to do that, 'cause it requires me to really pull from the sky."

B.o.B is one of the most-nominated artists at the VMAs, scoring nods for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, among others. He actually found out about the recognition via Twitter. "I was just on Twitter checking to see what's up, and then I saw I got nominated, and I was like, 'All right, don't mind if I do,' " he shared with us last month.

The potential big haul left the melodic MC feeling special.

"It's very special to me," B.o.B said. "I think it's a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I've put in over the years and the word of mouth I've helped create. It's definitely amazing. I'm trying to find the words to explain it, but I can't. It's inexplicable. I'm a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. While Travie McCoy fans are no doubt excited to see him perform at the VMAs, we wondered, who does he most want to see perform at the awards show on Sunday?

"Definitely stoked to see Eminem," McCoy told MTV News of Slim Shady, the show's opener. "I'm really excited to also see what deadmau5 is doing. I know what I'm doing with him, but I'm excited to see what he's doing with everyone else."

Deadmau5, a house music icon , is the house artist for this year's MTV Video Music Awards. He follows performers like Wale, Mark Ronson, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM, all of whom kept the pace of the awards show going between musical acts.

Twenty-eight-year-old Toronto native deadmau5 (born Joel Zimmerman) is a hotly anticipated act at the show this year, as one of the most in-demand producers on the house music scene.

"Dance wasn't always considered pop, and people like Lady Gaga and [David] Guetta and those guys really brought it out to the commercial market," deadmau5 said about bringing his sound to the masses. "I'm just getting a lot more fans and God bless it, and that's the goal of being an artist is to get yourself heard by any means possible."

Other 2010 VMA performers include Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, B.o.B, Drake, Linkin Park, Usher, Paramore and Florence and the Machine, as well as McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn, who are set to take the stage with deadmau5.

LOS ANGELES — Celebrated party-starter Swizz Beatz will have a very different vantage point at the MTV Video Music Awards this year. Swizz will be a performer at the show rather than his usual position as spectator.

"I'm used to seeing people perform my music on the VMA stage while I sit back and watch like a proud dad and a fan," he said Friday in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Swizz and Mary J. Blige will take to the stage as Drake's special guests to perform "Fancy" on Sunday night. "But to actually be on that stage during rehearsal, it was like, 'I can get used to this.' This is probably where I need to be next year ... by myself. So it was super-inspiring to rock with Drake and to have Mary out there. It's gonna be fun."

Also on Friday, Drake revealed that his performance was inspired by Frank Sinatra and his legendary homies. "I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room," Drake recalled. "It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn't, 'Let's just rap and be epic and be huge.' They were like, 'I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.' I wanted to get up there and look fly."

The song "Fancy" has its own interesting story. The record was originally supposed to be on Mary J. Blige's 2009 Stronger With Each Tear, but did not make the cut due to scheduling. Swizz Beatz was going to hold it for his own LP, but after talking to Drake about collaborating for Thank Me Later, he handed the tune over to the 23-year-old.

" 'Fancy' has been well-traveled," Swizz Beatz said over the summer in New Orleans. "It started off as a Swizz record. Then I got Mary [J. Blige] on it. It was supposed to be on her [Stronger With Each Tear], but we missed the deadline. Then I pulled it back for my [upcoming] record. Then five o'clock one morning, on the phone speaking with Drake, he's in a different time zone, we're trying to figure out what he needs [for his album]. He's like, 'Yo, I just need a record for the ladies.' I'm on my computer playing him joints over the phone. Then I played him 'Fancy.' I was like, 'You want something like this?' But I was playing it as a reference."

"He was like, 'That's the record I need,' " Swizz continued. "I said, 'OK, I'll make you that.''

And as history shows, Drake didn't want something like "Fancy," he wanted "Fancy."

Rick Ross Recalls Sipping Champagne With Jay-Z At His First VMAs

LOS ANGELESRick Ross was all grins as he shook hands and mingled with the likes of Ice Cube and David Banner at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. The Bawse has a special role in this year's VMA ceremony — we'll keep that a surprise for Sunday. But Ross will tell you that he's humbled just to be a guest this year.

"My [first] VMA experience, it was a couple years back. I had just released 'Every Day I'm Hustlin'.' I had a cool year and I went. The first performance I saw was Pharrell and Ludacris' 'Money Maker,' " Ross said, recalling the 2006 VMAs. "I was actually sitting next to Jay-Z. The whole time we was in the auditorium, Jay had a little runner that was squatting between the chairs bringing us Ace [of Spades champagne]. So we was sipping champagne at the VMAs. It was dope. But at the same time, I was inspired. I was looking at the situation, realizing how much work I had to do. To first make it on [the same] stage where I was watching Ludacris and Pharrell. Then to make it to the level where Jay was, just sitting back enjoying it. Champagne running back and forth."

Ross has already guaranteed that 2010 will be "the dopest" VMAs ever because of his participation in it, the show's host and the elaborate set.

"Just to be a part of this year's VMAs in any capacity ... I'm still humbled because I know it's so much more to do. So much more to accomplish, so much, so many more bigger things. Just being at rehearsals, it was a reminder. Like I said, it was like I stepped off a ship in Pandora [when I saw the set]. All white, the choreography, Chelsea Handler is on fire. It's dope."

LOS ANGELES — Will.i.am was the man of the hour at the 2010 BMI Urban Awards Friday night, as the Black Eyed Peas frontman was honored with the prestigious President's Award. He also scored an award for Urban Song of the Year with the Peas' for their hit "Boom Boom Pow," before he and Usher brought the audience of suits out of their seats with a performance of their collabo "O.M.G."

The multiplatinum producer grew emotional during his acceptance speech for the President's Award. He touched on the technological shift going on in the music industry, urged artists to think outside the box and shouted out his BEP bandmate Apl.De.Ap as his inspiration.

Prior to the show, will.i.am told MTV News how honored he was to receive this recognition at this point in his career. "There's a lot that I want to continue to do and learn," he explained from the red carpet beforehand. The technology and music, I wanna take advantage of all the changes in the industry. There's no record stores. Radio stations have tough competition because of the Internet. People listen to music more than they ever have. It's a unique time because I can make a song, put it on my phone and send it to 5 million people in like 20 seconds. That's dope. So to be acknowledged at this point in time with all these changes happening, it's super, it's dope.

"And to be acknowledged when I'm just a fan of music and hungry about all those things I previously mentioned, that's mega-fresh," he continued. " 'Cause I watched people have crazy discipline to learn theory — Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield — that know how to read and write music, and I watch them be acknowledged and do great things. So this is like a tap on the shoulder saying, you're going in the right direction."

Lil Wayne (Urban Songwriter of the Year), Polow Da Don (Urban Producer of the Year) and EMI Music Publishing (Urban Publisher of the Year) were among the other big winners at the event, which was held at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood.

It was the second year in a row Wayne took home the top songwriter award, this year for contributing to six of the year's most performed songs, including "Every Girl," "Forever" and "Successful."

Petey Pablo was arrested on Saturday (September 11) in North Carolina for allegedly trying to bring a weapon onto a flight.

According to local news website WRAL.com, the rapper was arrested at around 6 a.m. at Raleigh-Durham International Airport after airport security found a Smith & Wesson 639 in his carry-on luggage. He was reportedly attempting to board a flight to Los Angeles for Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. The MC (born Moses Barrett III) was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Pablo posted $50,000 bail and has a court date on Monday. The rapper reportedly gave out his CDs to jailers before he left.

The arrest isn't the rapper's first run-in with the law. Before launching his music career, Pablo served six years of a 14-year prison sentence for selling drugs.

Known for high-energy hits like "Freek-A-Leek," Pablo kicked off a successful music career with the help of the Timbaland-produced "Raise Up" in 2001. His debut LP, Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album, and the follow-up, Diary of a Sinner: 2nd Entry, debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 in 2004. The rapper also guested on Ciara's debut single, "Goodies."

In 2005, Pablo teamed up with Death Row honcho Suge Knight for the album Same Eyez on Me. The Southern hitmaker's partnership with the West Coast mogul was unexpected, but Pablo explained his views about their working relationship in an interview that year with MTV News.

"If you accept what life is supposed to be, then there's things that'll happen in your life that you won't fully understand until later on in life. But when the understanding comes at the end of the day, everything that you ever had questions about will be no more," Pablo said. "What God put together, let no man take it apart."
