Lady Gaga's eight wins at the 2010 Video Music Awards not only broke yet another record for the budding icon but delivered more of the signature Gaga sound bites the singer is known for unleashing.

When she nabbed the first two Moonmen of the night on Sunday, she brought the American military's controversial "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy into the limelight. Gaga gave a shout-out to "all the gays for remixing this video over and over," when "Bad Romance" snagged Best Female Video. And when she was handed the coveted Video of the Year for the song, she revealed the title of her hotly anticipated third effort, Born This Way, and even belted out a lyric.

Throughout her many trips to the stage, an emotional Gaga teared up and set off flashbulbs with a meat-themed frock.

But that was just one evening. Here's a look at some of Lady Gaga's most memorable stage-show statements:

»In August 2009, the singer riled up the crowd at a Tel Aviv show, abandoning few of the outrageous antics she'd promised to avoid days before. "Tel Aviv, get your di--s out, because I heard there's some pretty big co--s here in Israel," Gaga said.

»Donning a mask and jagged crown constructed from blood-red lace, Gaga triumphantly clutched her Best New Artist award at the 2009 VMAs. "It's my first f---ing Moonman," Gaga bellowed. She capped off a night of head-turning fashion and a jaw-dropping stage set by announcing the win is "for God and the gays."

»Gaga continued to work it for "the gays" when she performed at the Human Rights Campaign dinner in October by switching up the lyrics to John Lennon's "Imagine." "Imagine there's no heaven/ It's easy if you try," Gaga sang before referencing the tragic murder of Matthew Shepard, "No hell below us/ And only Matthew in the sky."

»Although she didn't accept the awards onstage at the 2010 Grammy Awards in February, Gaga tweeted a picture of herself in tears after learning she had landed statuettes for Best Dance Recording and Best Electronic/Dance Album.

»Later on in the month, Gaga paid tribute to her late friend, designer Alexander McQueen, at the 2010 Brit Awards, saying, "Thank you to Lee McQueen," while sporting an intricate white lace headpiece and rocking a towering blonde wig.

» Gaga spoke out against Arizona's controversial SB 1070 immigration bill during a Monster Ball Tour stop in Phoenix: "I will not cancel my show. I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will protest this state."

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Katy Perry is still riding high off the successes of her first two Teenage Dream singles: the VMA-nominated "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream." Now fans are hankering to know what she might release next from the album, but Perry is keeping that detail under wraps.

"The third single I can't reveal yet, because I'm too happy about 'Teenage Dream,' " she told MTV News on the VMA white carpet. "And I love secrets."

But she did leave fans with a hint, describing the video for the next single as "touching."

With an emotional track lined up, Perry also has some plans to tour sometime next year. "I hope that it's going to engage all of your senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch," she explained, adding that she had a warning for anyone who has been trying to take a bite out of her scented cotton-candy album cover. "It smells good, but you can't eat the album. I've had people eating the album, and I can't take responsibility for that."

Perry also revealed how excited she's been with the response to the album and its singles. "There's not many more places to go than #1," she said. "There's number zero, but that could be a Catch-22."

Perry seemed most excited for her next big goal, which she intended to address right after the VMAs: "[I need] some sleep, because I'm really sick," she said. "Nursing that cold!"

Rihanna 'Jetted In' For Eminem VMA Performance

'It really killed me that I couldn't be here,' Rihanna says of initially not being able to make the show.

It was the surprise of the night when Rihanna, decked out in an outfit reminiscent of Madonna's 1984 "Like a Virgin" VMA performance, graced the VMA stage on Sunday to lend her vocals to Eminem's show-stopping performance. After performing "Not Afraid," Em segued into his collabo with Rihanna, "Love the Way You Lie."

It was especially surprising to see Rihanna on the stage since she had not planned to be at the show due to a prior commitment. She was filming "Battleship" in Hawaii, but as luck would have it, she got a day off and was able to make the show, much to Em's pleasure.

"It really killed me that I couldn't be here and actually, luckily, I got the day off and Eminem called me the day before and said, 'Please, I'm having a really hard time doing this without you. We had a really great song,' " she recalled. "And I just was like, 'Oh damn!' It killed me, and then they allowed us to leave and do it, and we jetted in and we're gonna jet right back out."

And as quickly as the last-minute performance came together, Rihanna had to head back to the set to continue work on the film. But not before trying to get her VMA look just right. "This morning we had a quick rehearsal," she said. "And I started doing my hair 'cause I'm doing the film and I don't have any hair, any nails."

Rihanna also tweeted about the appearance, writing, "SURPRISE!!! Just had to do it, guys."

Kanye West Is Singing About Himself In 'Runaway,' Fans Say

MTV News asks Jay-Z and Eminem fans at Yankee Stadium what they thought of 'Ye's VMA performance.

NEW YORK -- Kanye West drops some choice insults in his latest song, which he debuted at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

"I always find, yeah, I always find something wrong/ You been putting up with my sh-- just way too long/ I'm so gifted at finding what I don't like the most/ So I think it's time for us to have a toast," 'Ye rhymes in "Runaway." "Let's have a toast for the douche bags!/ Let's have a toast for the a--holes!/ Let's have a toast for the scumbags!"

The chorus has nods to an array of "bags," however, fans believe the MC is, in a very un-hip-hop move, taking swipes at himself.

MTV News caught up with a bunch of hip-hop heads at Jay-Z and Eminem's Home and Home Tour stop at Yankee Stadium on Monday night (September 13), and many felt that Jigga's "little brother" was using the track to air out his insecurities.

"That was a funny song," Steve Bananti said. "I liked the song a lot. It was good. I feel like he was making fun of himself."

Jamal Hairston said Yeezy's lyrics reference "the stuff that he does" including the Taylor Swift 2009 VMA controversy.

"I don't think he was trying to insult [Swift]. I think it was self-deprecating. He was maybe talking about himself," Hairston said, adding that the track is "a toast for the people who mess up." "[He's] trying to find some redemption, maybe."

Brian Bennett, who didn't like the track, said 'Ye was simply dropping insults for shock value. "I just thought that he was trying to get the crowd going crazy because he said the word 'douche bag,' " he said. "I just feel like he was trying to get the crowd stirred."

Todd Read said he wasn't feeling the track at first but might get into it after a few listens. "I'm a big Kanye fan but ... I gotta hear the track un-performed. Maybe I'll like it then. His music grows on me like that," he said. Read, however, did enjoy West's performance: "I liked to see him playing with the MPC and everything. I see he's bringing it back to the real hip-hop roots, so I appreciated that."

Christian Contreras agreed that 'Ye's VMA set, which was low on props but big on impact, was another singular moment from the Chicago superstar.

"I actually liked the song. I [liked] the whole performance; it was different. It's definitely something that I wasn't expecting, but Kanye always comes out of left field with everything," he said. "The little toast to the douche bags, it's cool."

Contreras speculated that 'Ye's track was not merely about how he feels, but rather how he's been perceived by the media and fans alike.

"All those names that he said -- douche bag, a--hole, all that stuff -- people have actually made that connection with him," he observed. "I'm sure he got those names called to him a couple times. Maybe it was a little stab to the industry, talking about himself and how he's changed."

What do you think Kanye West's new song is about? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga's VMA Outfits: Fashion Week Attendees Weigh In

'She is like a work of art!' 'Behind the Velvet Ropes' hostess Lauren Ezersky says.

NEW YORK — Even though Lady Gaga managed to cut down her costume changes from last year's Video Music Awards to just three for the 2010 Video Music Awards, they still sparked the interest of many who turned up and tuned in. We asked some New York Fashion Week attendees which of the three costumes was their favorite.

Lisa Liu perceived her arrival outfit, designed by Alexander McQueen, as "her tamest outfit of the evening. But I thought it looked very Lady Gaga." Becky Boudwyn described her as "an out-of-control couture Pocahontas." "Behind the Velvet Ropes" hostess Lauren Ezersky said, "She is like a work of art! When I look at her, it's almost like looking at a painting by an old master. ... When you look at her, you can't just look once, there's always something else to see! I love her first outfit, I just love it!" This dress was seen as the favorite by many, including Chris Futrell, who praised the fact that it was "very detailed-oriented."

When we brought up outfit number two, people were not afraid to mention the fact that Gaga could barely walk in it. It was praised by Teasea and Duane Bennett as being "quite exquisite" and "very gothic," but was disliked by stylist Celine Griscom, who described it as "slightly dumpy ... doesn't have enough leanness to it," and Ayoka Lucas, who said, "It's not flattering to her body at all, unfortunately!"

The third and final dress, the controversial meat dress, definitely left a bad taste in people's mouths as reactions were unified in perceiving this dress as "something different and something you would not see at an awards show such as the VMAs" (Chris Futrell). Ezersky praised the dress, joking that "She's cookin! In fact, she needs to cook! ... I love the look of it, but I'm not quite sure if I would want to sit next to her! How would they bring that to her? Like, in a freezer!? I don't know! I think it's totally cool! You go, girl!"

The speculation about whether it was real meat was not lost on Lisa Liu, who noticed that no one was "shy to hug her so I wasn't sure if it was real meat." Most people shared the opinion of Teasea Bennett, who said, "I think she was able to pull it off. I wasn't too fond of that one, to be honest, but it suited her! I think it suited Gaga. She can pull anything off! Even a bag, a plain plastic bag, she'd rock that!"

Ezersky summarized her opinion of Gaga's fashion choices, saying, "She gives young people inspiration that it's OK to be different, it's OK to look the way you want to look." And in relation to the recent death of Alexander McQueen, the designer of the first two dresses, Ezersky pointed out, "It was a beautiful homage to him because we all really miss him in this industry. I got to meet him one time and he was an amazing artistic genius. ... She will bring out the new Alexander McQueen. She'll find them and wear them."

Taylor Swift's All-Time Best VMA Moments

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 07:39 AM PDT

Since her debut just two years ago, Taylor Swift has had some memorable appearances at the big show.
By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift made a triumphant return to the VMA stage on Sunday night with a new ballad, which may or may not be directed at Kanye West, off her forthcoming October release, Speak Now. Dressed in a strapless, beige dress, Swift spilled her guts and forgave someone for wronging her in the past.

This wasn't Swift's first time at the VMA rodeo, though. Her beginnings trace all the way back to 2008, when she was nominated for Best New Artist for her unrequited love ballad "Teardrops on My Guitar." And while Swift wouldn't end up taking home a Moonman that year, she did get the honor of being a co-host at the pre-show, and went public with her then beau, Joe Jonas.

Swift had a pretty easygoing 2008 VMAs compared to what went down the following year. In 2009, she hit the carpet in a stunning, Grecian-draped silver-sparkled dress and won Best Female Video. We all know how that turned out, but she didn't let it get her down. Mere minutes after accepting the award, she performed her winning song, "You Belong With Me." Decked out in a hot red dress, exuberantly belting out her hit in a moving subway and on top of a taxi cab in the middle of Manhattan, Swift stood outside the Radio City Music Hall and almost made everyone forget about what happened earlier that night.

That brings us to the 2010 VMAs, when Swift once again hit the stage. This time Swift, who was up for Best Female Video again, played her captivating new tune, which still has no official title. In it she sings, "I guess you really did it this time/ Left yourself in your war path/ Lost your balance on a tightrope/ Lost your mind trying to get it back." While many had hoped West and Swift would take the stage together, it wasn't to be. Well, there's always the 2011 VMAs.

Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' Director Recalls Video's 'Explosion'

As the top-nominated artist at Sunday night's 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, pop sensation Lady Gaga's "little monsters" were tuned in to witness her triumphs — and they weren't disappointed. Gaga took home eight Moonmen, including the evening's top prize for Video of the Year.

Director Francis Lawrence was also honored for his work on "Bad Romance," though even with work for artists like Britney Spears, Will Smith and Aerosmith behind him, he admitted that nothing he's done compares with the fervor generated by the night's top-winning video.

"I've been doing it a long time, but I've never really experienced an explosion with a video like this, where people so eagerly awaited it and it blew up on YouTube instantly," he explained. "For a while, until the Justin Bieber video came out, it was the most-viewed video on YouTube."

Lawrence admitted that he would love to work with Gaga again, though his increased focus in recent years on Hollywood features, such as "I Am Legend" or the upcoming Robert Pattinson/ Reese Witherspoon-starring adaptation "Water for Elephants" leaves his schedule pretty packed. "I haven't [heard from her], because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the 'Bad Romance'] shoot," he said. "But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second. She was really fun to work with."

Lawrence's interest in working with Gaga again can largely be credited to the pop star's own passion for a well-made music video, a fact that is evident in all of her work. "She loves the art form of music videos and she is a real creative partner and has great ideas and really cool and unique tastes. She has a great team working with her as well, helping build really fantastic things that she wears," he explained. "She works hard, she shows up on time and she's pretty spontaneous... it was great."

"Bad Romance" is an excellent example of this. Lawrence and Gaga each had their own ideas for how the video ought to look. They met, discussed it and collaborated to produce a shared vision, one that incorporated ideas from both sides. Even when the plan changed, there was still a clear idea of what to do and how to do it.

"Originally I was gonna shoot ['Bad Romance'] in New York and we were gonna shoot it on location. There were more exteriors and things like that," Lawrence said. "And then because of budgetary restraints and because of her schedule, we moved it to Los Angeles and the setting changed and it all just became that one interior space, but the basic idea and the concept of the video stayed pretty much the same."

On those "budgetary restraints," Lawrence freely admits that times have changed. "Years ago, when I was really making [music videos], before I was making movies, budgets would be over a million dollars," he said. "Bad Romance" featured no product placement, but he said the reason we see such things in music videos these days is that it allows for bigger budgets — which makes the Gaga video all the more impressive. "It was a two-day shoot," he said. "We spent two 14-hour days shooting."

Rihanna, Cher, Katy Perry, More Stars Tweet About VMAs

Diddy promises to set the 'stage on fire' as a performer next year.

Although the curtains have closed on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, the show goes on in the form of Twitter reactions from the various celebrities in attendance Sunday night. From the show's various performers to mere spectators out in the crowd, just about everybody has had something to say about this year's event.

The first big surprise of the show occurred when Rihanna unexpectedly arrived to sing "Love the Way You Lie" opposite Eminem. The R&B artist wasn't expected to appear at the VMAs, but Rihanna stormed the stage nonetheless, later explaining to her fans on Twitter: "SURPRISE!!! Just had to do it guys."

Rihanna's performance alongside Slim Shady was considered one of the highlights of the night, especially for Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams. "The best thing was seeing Eminem live," she wrote, "and being only a few feet away from Gaga."

Indeed, it was hard not to notice Lady G, what with her eight VMA victories and her now-infamous meat dress. Legendary singer and actress Cher got an up-close glimpse at Gaga's controversial wardrobe, describing it as "interesting" and "amazing."

"The way it was cut and fitted to her body was amazing! The meat purse was genius," she assessed. "As [an] art piece, it was astonishing!"

The show moved along at a brisk pace, thanks to the hilarious work of host Chelsea Handler, though there was at least one attendee pining for last year's host, Russell Brand. "California Gurls" singer Katy Perry, who began her relationship with Brand at the VMAs in 2009, offered a tribute to her fiancé and told him that he was with her "in spirit." Brand responded with a promise to see Perry in Los Angeles later in the week.

At the end of the day, it was Kanye West who stole the spotlight for his second year in a row. Rebounding from his controversial stage-crashing at last year's awards, Kanye brought the house down at the end of the evening with his new song "Runaway." The new tune attracted praise from many of the show's attendees — including "Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino — and Kanye himself addressed his Twitter followers just hours before his performance.

"I wish my Mom was here but I know she's looking down," he wrote. "I want to make her so happy today."

Kanye closed out the 2010 VMAs in style, but we can already look ahead toward next year's show thanks to the promise from Diddy : "Next year imma set that f---in' stage on fire! See y'all then!"

To paraphrase an esteemed character from "Zoolander," that Rihanna is so hot right now!

Not only does the singer have one of the biggest songs of the year in Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," but her new single, "Only Girl," is getting serious buzz. After jetting in from Hawaii, she gave a killer surprise performance alongside Em at this year's VMAs. When we caught up with the multi-talented star, we asked about the awards show and her upcoming film, "Battleship."

Although filming has already started on the 2012 flick, Rihanna told MTV News she just had to make the trip to Los Angeles on Sunday.

"It really killed me that I couldn't be here and, luckily, I got the day off. Eminem, he called me the day before and said, 'Please, I'm having a really hard time doing this without you,' " she recalled. "We had a really great song, and I just was like, 'Oh damn!' It killed me. And then they allowed us to leave and do it, and we jetted in and we're gonna jet right back out," she laughed.

Regarding her role in "Battleship," which is based on the beloved Hasbro board game, Rihanna said she's having a great time so far. "It's really good, really good," she said. "I'm really enjoying it, actually. I like it."

The movie also stars "Friday Night Lights" breakout star Taylor Kitsch, model Brooklyn Decker and "True Blood" heartthrob Alexander Skarsgård.

The pop star spoke highly of her hunky co-star, Skarsgård.

"He's really cool, just laid-back. He doesn't get in the way," Rihanna said. "[He's] not very talkative, but he's a really cool guy and that's [to] everybody — not just the cast."

Oh ... and there's that tall and Swedish thing he has going for him as well.

"He's super-tall," she smiled. "I didn't even know he was that tall!"

John Mayer Quits Twitter

John Mayer is losing a lot of friends.

A spokesperson for the singer said Mayer has shut down his Twitter account now that he's done with his Battle Studies Tour. He continues to communicate with his fans via his blog, the rep said. The singer had amassed more than 3.7 million followers on Twitter.

His exit from the micro-blogging site comes months after he dealt with a bit of controversy. Back in February, Mayer had an interview with Playboy in which he talked about intimate relations with former girlfriend Jessica Simpson and used the N-word.

The whole issue became a hot Twitter topic, and Mayer tweeted an apology to his followers: "Re: using the 'N word' in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it's such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there's no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.

"And while I'm using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it's time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews. ... It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it's gotten out of hand and I've created somewhat of a monster."

He also tweeted: " I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don't have the stomach for it. Again, because I don't want anyone to think I'm equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again."

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Other VMA Winners Thank Fans On Twitter

'We did it together and we are just getting started!!!' Bieber tweets to his fans.

"Woke up ... had a good breakfast ... got a smile on my face ... everyone is feeling good ... it's finally here."

"It," of course, refers to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and the speaker in question is none other than "Baby" singer Justin Bieber. On Sunday, Bieber — who was nominated for Best New Artist — tweeted to his legions of Twitter followers to express his excitement over the impending awards show. "Regardless of what happens, I'm lucky to have the greatest fans ever," he wrote. "So thank you!"

By the end of the night, Bieber had more than luck and his fans on his side — he also had a Moonman to call his own.

"Wow. What?? Are you kidding. What!!?!" an ecstatic Bieber tweeted immediately following his win for Best New Artist. "Can't stop smiling!"

Bieber offered his thanks to a wide range of supporters, from his mother to his manager, Scooter Braun, to legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris. The singer acknowledged that he was likely leaving someone out, so he simply decided to thank "everybody."

"Biggest thank you in the world to the greatest fans in the world," he wrote. "We did it together and we are just getting started!!!"

Of course, Bieber wasn't the only musician lucky enough to leave the Nokia Theatre with a shiny new trophy. Lady Gaga, for instance, went home with a walloping eight awards, including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year.

"Too much poetry tonight," Lady G tweeted, along with a photo of herself, after the show was over. "But u love u, + I love I, + we were #bornthisway."

30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto was equally grateful after winning the Best Rock Video award for "Kings and Queens." "An unforgettable and amazing night," he tweeted. "We are the luckiest band in the world to be able to share our lives with all of you."

Sadly, not everyone was able to claim victory at the VMAs. Drake, who lost Best Hip-Hop Video to Eminem, ended the night with his head held high despite the loss. "Thank you for all the love tonight," he told his Twitter followers. "I had the time of my life."

Hayley Williams of Paramore had a similar outlook, despite losing Best Rock Video and three other awards for her collaboration with B.o.B on "Airplanes." "Even though we didn't win, our time was up on that stage," Williams tweeted. "We had the best time performing. So we still won!"

2010 VMAs Nab MTV's Biggest Ratings Since 2002

Awards show was the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever.

Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards scored the biggest audience for any MTV telecast since 2002. The VMAs grabbed 11.4 million viewers and is the #1 cable telecast of 2010 for the network, followed by MTV's hit reality series "Jersey Shore," and the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever.

There were plenty of must-watch moments at this year's awards show, and the buzz building days before the show about surprise performers likely contributed to the sizable turnout.

This year's show saw much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted a new song addressing last year's controversy with Kanye West) and West himself, who also debuted a new song that seemed to address his fall from pop-culture grace. The show also featured performances by rappers Eminem, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber. Newcomer Nicki Minaj and Black Eyed Peas mastermind Will.I.Am performed together at the VMA pre-show.

Host Chelsea Handler opened up the show with a skit that featured Lindsay Lohan. In the pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with the troubled actress, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: "Don't embarrass me."

"Every year, MTV celebrates the music and creative genius of artists we have the privilege of working with all year long," said Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks Music & Logo Group. "Last night's luminescent VMA setting provided the perfect backdrop to do just that and we're thrilled the audience resoundingly agreed."

Justin Bieber's Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show

Best New Artist winner was incredibly hands-on, weighing in on his dancers, drum kit and leather lettermen jackets before the big show.

Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber's Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the "A Hard Day's Night"-inspired VMA promo he shot.

Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits "U Smile," "Baby" and "Somebody to Love." Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white '57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show.

With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session.

While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their "romance" in a hilarious voiceover.

As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, "Follow me on Twitter!" — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: "What's up, everybody? I love you!"

The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out "Somebody to Love," with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner.

'Easy A' Star Penn Badgley Dishes On Hollywood Rumor Mill

'I once heard that I got my girlfriend a Cartier love bracelet,' actor jokes about 'Gossip Girl' co-star Blake Lively. 'It was incredibly romantic of me.'

Opening on Friday, "Easy A," starring adorable girl-next-door Emma Stone and "Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley, is a perfect example of the teen comedy done right. The hilarious film revolves around the enduring teenage obsession with one's reputation. Nice girl/ semi-outsider Olive makes a deal with a guy friend to pretend to have sex at a house party, so that the bullies at their high school will think he's "cool" and leave him alone. But that one good-natured act soon spirals into many more "requests" from other similarly plagued students.

Soon the high school rumor mill has been set ablaze with exaggerated accounts of Olive's alleged exploits. When MTV News recently caught up with Badgley, we took a different tack, asking him what rumor he wished he'd started about himself back in high school — and the wackiest one he's heard since then.

"That I was going to be a movie star," he joked. "I don't know, as far as my high school persona [goes], I was pretty laid-back, I was pretty quiet. Confident but not terribly out there," he revealed. "I didn't come into my own until I was about 17 or 18."

Not surprisingly, the funniest rumor Badgley had heard about himself involved his highly publicized relationship with "GG" co-star and girlfriend Blake Lively.

"I once heard a rumor that I got my girlfriend a Cartier love bracelet," he recalled. "Which is essentially like a love handcuff that can't come off, and they're like $3,000 or something. So it was incredibly romantic of me," he laughed. "But I didn't do it."

Lady Gaga's VMA Meat Dress: Style Experts Weigh In!

'Too bad she didn't wear it with a grill,' Nylon's Faran Krentcil quips
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga wore several very interesting outfits to the VMAs on Sunday night. While she went glam in two creations (one by Alexander McQueen and one by Giorgio Armani), she was more grisly in her meat dress, shoes, bag and hat, designed by Franc Fernandez and put together by her frequent stylist, Nicola Formichetti.

The look had the fashion world buzzing by Monday morning, spawning blog headlines such as, "Was it offensive or awesome?"

"Too bad she didn't wear it with a grill," Nylon digital director Faran Krentcil told MTV News in an e-mail about the gutsy design that echoes the bikini Gaga wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan.

Kelly Cutrone was all about the look. "I don't get it what's the beef with Gaga — Gaga is the Queen of the Universe, and no one should say anything negative about her or they will be attacked by her millions of fans," the PR maven and star of "The City" told MTV News. "I am happy to see her looking so healthy and to see she put a little extra meat on!"

Meanwhile, TV personality and "Telephone" co-star Jai Rodriguez commented that Gaga is creating a professional challenge for him. "Well, I am currently playing a character where the script says, 'Take it a step further than Gaga would,' " he explained. "I'm no longer sure that's possible after last night's dinner frock."

Food was certainly on other fashion-minded folks' minds. "It's creepy and amazing at the same time, but I know what I won't be eating today," Fashion Critic wrote on RedCarpet-FashionAwards.com.

The Washington Post's Jen Chaney felt that it wasn't the strongest of Gaga's looks for the night. "Lady Gaga wouldn't be Lady Gaga if she didn't show up at the MTV Video Music Awards in at least one over-the-top ensemble. ... So perhaps this wasn't an example of Miss 'Bad Romance' at her most original. ... As for Gaga's other fashion choices, I ultimately liked the McQueen gown more. Despite my assertion on Twitter last night that the feathers in the middle of her head may have been an homage to the Washington Redskins — which clearly worked some magic, so thanks, Gaga! — the dress itself was the most elegant and fashion-forward of the three."

While the fashion world appeared open-minded to Gaga's fleshy statement, animal-rights group PETA had a very different reaction. "After time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots," the group told TMZ.com on Monday.

Tupac Remembered By Rick Ross, Paul Wall, Zaytoven

' 'Pac was our prophet,' Gorilla Zoe tells MTV News 14 years after iconic MC's death.

It's one of the moments you just don't forget. Most hip-hop fans can remember exactly where they were when they heard Tupac Skakur died, 14 years ago on September 13. While celebrating the 2010 VMAs in Los Angeles over the weekend, some of your favorite artists took time out to remember one of music's biggest icons.

"I'm from Carol City, and in Carol City we got a park [where] if somebody passes away, we go to the park," Rick Ross told MTV News. "So if something happen, we split up, go to the park. So I'll never forget: I was coming home and riding by the park. I saw all my homies, Chevys lined up. I was like, 'Damn, somebody died.' "

Ross said he had just been at the park a week prior mourning the loss of a childhood friend, Little Pete, who was killed in a vehicular accident. The day 'Pac died, Ross had déjà vu.

"I see everybody there again; I'm like, 'Damn, what done happened?' I pull up, people crying."

Thoughts raced through Ross' mind. " 'Who this finnin to be now?' " he recalled wondering.

"The way my homies was there, and everybody I knew was there, I just knew one of my closest homies was dead. That's when I realized the influence this man had on this generation," Ross said of the Death Row MC. "These people were crying like they were the week before when one of my best friends I knew since first grade died. The same amount of people were there for Tupac and had never met him a day before in their life. That's when I realized what Tupac meant to the people. I'm pretty sure I've never witnessed anything like this before in my life."

"When Biggie died, I was on the way to church," Paul Wall said of 'Pac's onetime adversary. "When 'Pac died, I had came out the gym, hoopin'. Me and Chamillionaire, we was in the ride together. We heard on the radio Tupac had passed away. We both were trippin'." (Interestingly, Wall's major-label debut, The People's Champ, was released on September 13 in 2005.)

Back in 1996, producer Zaytoven was living in San Francisco when he heard about Tupac's passing. 'Pac had spent some of his younger years in Oakland, California, and the Bay had extra love for Shakur.

"All we was listening to was 'Pac out there," Zay said. "I was going to basketball practice. My mom had heard [the news] on the radio and called me about it. That was a downer for me, really the whole [West] Coast.

"Everybody was trippin'. We used to walk around with portable radios on our shoulders playing him," Zay added. "That's how hard we was rocking with 'Pac. It was devastating to the whole Bay Area.

Rapper Gorilla Zoe said that he, like many fans, initially refused to believe that Tupac had been killed.

" 'Pac was Superman to us," Zoe explained. "Homes had been shot before [in 1994]; he always bounced back. When we found out he was shot [a week before his death] but wasn't dead, we was like, 'OK.' Then when we found out he was dead, nobody believed that. I didn't believe that. For years we were like, 'Homes on an island somewhere, chillin'.'

"He was our prophet," Zoe continued. "In the South, wasn't nothing else: It was 'Pac. 'Pac was heavy in the South. We wouldn't have had a movement like we got if that door wasn't open. Homes opened the door for the real, for the soldiers. 'Pac was our prophet."

Taylor Swift, Kanye West Have Critics Debating VMAs Again

The media weighs in on what 'Innocent' and 'Runaway' are saying about last year's incident.
By Paul Cantor

Oscar Wilde once wrote, "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." Taylor Swift definitely got that memo. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she seemed to be forgiving someone, maybe Kanye West, as she crooned, "Who you are is not what you did. ... You're still an innocent."

Kanye, who apologized to Swift via Twitter earlier this month, seemed to be acknowledging his wrongdoing in the lyrics of his new song, "Runaway."

Though the pair didn't appear onstage together on Sunday night, as some hoped, many in the media took the opportunity to weigh in on whether the evening's performances had settled the score between them.

"She seems to have forgiven him," Jennifer Armstrong wrote in Entertainment Weekly. "She looked gorgeous, as she is wont to do, but, um, the actual song was a pretty opaque."

Kanye's performance was looked upon more favorably. "It was a complete victory," EW's Brad Wete wrote, "addressing his character flaws and acknowledging public opinion without relinquishing any of his power."

Spin's Steve Kandell thinks the two stars reluctantly met somewhere in the middle. "Kanye implored a toast to the douche bags and jerkoffs, among whom he undoubtedly counts himself, albeit with reservations," he wrote. "She thinks he isn't what he did, but he's putting the lie to that — no, I am that, it's just a shame you got in the crossfire. But, to paraphrase another great poet of the VMA era, he's not that innocent."

Over at The New York Times, Jon Caramanica wrote of West, "Wearing a red suit, he looked amateurish and vulnerable, and also affecting. At the end, Mr. West's knowing, bombastic humility won." With respect to Taylor Swift, Caramanica continued, "Ms. Swift — a victim, but no naïf — performed a new song, 'Innocent,' directed at Mr. West, an extremely savvy insult masquerading as the high road. She performed it with minimal accompaniment, barefoot, and with an unsteady relationship to pitch."

Many critics seemed to feel that Swift's song made the VMA interruption incident into something much deeper than it really was.

"The spectacle of an insanely wealthy 20-year-old singer using the phrase 'who you are is not what you did' to describe not a reformed criminal or a family member who grievously erred and must be forgiven," NPR's Linda Holmes wrote. "[B]ut to describe someone she doesn't really know whose only misdeed is rudeness at an awards show is just jaw-droppingly self-involved, and adding 'you're still an innocent,' with its implications of purity, borders on the creepy. Moreover, this entire attempt to psychoanalyze someone who's essentially a stranger, trying to find the internal pain that leads to every incident of acting out in public, suggests she doesn't yet know how being drunk works."

Perhaps Megan Friedman at Time summed it up best: "In reality, they're both winners — even if one of their performances was a disaster, they could console themselves by taking a swim in their pool full of money."

VMA Predictions: How Did Our Oddsmaker Do?

Lady Gaga and Eminem were the big winners, just like Richard Gardner forecasted.

So how did our oddsmaker fare with his predictions for who would take home the top prizes for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? Well, if you're a betting man (or woman), he wasn't too shabby.

Before the VMAs went down Sunday night, MTV News chatted with Richard Gardner, sportsbook manager for Bodog.com, and asked him to weigh in on which musicians would dominate at the awards show. Gardner guessed every major award correctly except one. We're impressed! Let's review his thoughts and reveal the actual outcomes.

Best Female Video
Lady Gaga, "Bad Romance": 2/5
Katy Perry (featuring Snoop Dogg), "California Gurls": 7/2
Taylor Swift, "Fifteen": 7/1
Beyoncé (featuring Lady Gaga), "Video Phone": 8/1
Ke$ha, "Tik Tok": 11/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "Although Best Female Video will probably go to Ms. Gaga at 2/5, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg's 'California Gurls' Candy Land trip is a strong contender at 7/2. Meanwhile, we don't think Taylor Swift will win for 'Fifteen' with 7/1 odds, but if she does, Kanye will have to scramble to put a speech together."

Who Actually Won: Gaga

Best Male Video
Eminem, "Not Afraid": 11/10
B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), "Airplanes": 2/1
Jason Derülo, "In My Head": 4/1
Usher featuring Will.I.Am, "OMG": 11/2
Drake, "Find Your Love": 10/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "Without a Gaga to contend with, the odds are more interesting for Best Male Video. Eminem's comeback is officially a success and thus, we're pitting the master of the internal rhyme as the favorite to win. We've given B.o.B and Hayley Williams the 2/1 second favorite, and although we are fans of Jason Derülo's song 'In My Head,' we don't necessarily like its chances to win at 4/1."

Who Actually Won: Eminem

Best Rock Video
Muse, "Uprising": 7/5
Florence and the Machine, "Dog Days Are Over": 2/1
30 Seconds to Mars, "Kings and Queens"": 4/1
Paramore, "Ignorance": 11/2
MGMT, "Flash Delirium": 6/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "Muse is the favorite here at 7/5 for the sheer potency of the song 'Uprising,' while MGMT pulls up the rear at a respectable 6/1 with 'Flash Delirium.' This is a very close category with no heavy favorite and no real long shot. So far we've had a number of bettors taking a shot on 'Kings and Queens' at 4/1."

Who Actually Won: 30 Seconds to Mars

Best Hip-Hop Video
Eminem, "Not Afraid": 5/4
B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), "Airplanes": 3/2
Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, "Forever": 3/1
Kid Cudi (featuring MGMT and Ratatat), "Pursuit of Happiness": 8/1
Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz, "On to the Next One": 12/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "Eminem is a favorite here at 5/4 because everyone likes a comeback. He's lost the weight, he's looking sharp, and he's working the introspective vibe that seems to be his best source of inspiration. Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz's 'On to the Next One' definitely gets points for originality, and while Jay-Z has no shortage of fans, we think the black-and-white video is a little too avant-garde to take the win."

Who Actually Won: Eminem

Best Pop Video
Lady Gaga, "Bad Romance": 1/2
Katy Perry (featuring Snoop Dogg), "California Gurls": 3/1
Beyoncé (featuring Lady Gaga), "Video Phone": 13/2
Ke$ha, "Tik Tok": 7/1
B.o.B (featuring Bruno Mars), "Nothin' on You": 12/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: " 'Bad Romance' is an obvious favorite here at 1/2, based on nothing more than the Gaga factor. Katy Perry with Snoop Dogg is second favorite here at 3/1 with 'California Gurls,' while B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars is the long shot at 12/1 for 'Nothin' on You.' "

Who Actually Won: Gaga's "Bad Romance"

Best New Artist
Justin Bieber (featuring Ludacris), "Baby": 4/5
Ke$ha, "Tik Tok": 2/1
Jason Derülo, "In My Head": 7/2
Nicki Minaj (featuring Sean Garrett), "Massive Attack": 12/1
Broken Bells, "The Ghost Inside": 14/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "We can't imagine a world where Justin Bieber doesn't win for Best New Artist, which is why he's a huge favorite at 4/5. The legions of fans out there with Bieber fever will make the difference and likely secure Bieber more hardware for his already buckling shelf. On the other side of the odds spectrum, Broken Bells' 'Ghost Inside' is thought-provoking and engaging, but the buzz just isn't there to make this one a contender. For those who disagree, the money is there to be made, as they pay out extremely well at 12/1."

Who Actually Won: Bieber

Video of the Year
Lady Gaga, "Bad Romance"": 1/1
Lady Gaga (featuring Beyoncé), "Telephone": 5/2
Eminem, "Not Afraid": 11/2
B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), "Airplanes": 6/1
Florence and the Machine, "Dog Days Are Over": 10/1
30 Seconds to Mars, "Kings and Queens": 12/1

Bodog's Pre-Show Take: "Although we wouldn't put our money on her being able to walk through an airport gracefully, Bodog's odds suggest that Lady Gaga will take home the Video of the Year Award for 'Bad Romance,' a video so edgy you just can't take your eyes off it. It's safe to say we're expecting the 2010 VMAs to feature a lot of Gaga. Meanwhile, the long shot of the bunch is 'Kings and Queens,' by 30 Seconds to Mars."

Who Actually Won: Gaga's "Bad Romance"

If anyone thought that 30 Seconds to Mars' partial re-creation of their VMA-winning video, "Kings and Queens," when they entered the big show's white carpet would prove to be the most dangerous part of the band's appearance on Sunday night, they were wrong.

When MTV News caught up with the band as they hit the white carpet, frontman Jared Leto explained that they had not only braved L.A. traffic for their entrance, they also endured an explosion of sorts. "We were in the middle of a glitter bomb. The entrance was fun and chaotic and crazy."

Their video, which was also nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Direction and the night's coveted Video of the Year award, features a legion of bikers making their way through the streets of Los Angeles at night. It was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins.

"I am so grateful ... I truly didn't think we would get it," Jared Leto said about 30STM's Best Rock Video win. "When I heard Paramore's name, I thought we wouldn't get it for sure," guitarist Tomo Milicevic added. "Honestly," Leto continued, "right now I feel so humble and so grateful."

Earlier in the night, Leto and his bandmates graciously accepted their award. "Thank you. This is amazing. This award really doesn't so much belong to us. It belongs to the most amazing family of friends and fans around the world that we could've have ever imagined," Jared Leto said.

"We're happy to accept it on their behalf. Thank you to MTV. Thank you to our label, to our management company. We're really proud to be here, proud to share it with all the other artists. It's been an amazing adventure, so thank you," he continued.
