LOS ANGELES -- Justin Bieber, surrounded by his band and dancers, went virtually unnoticed during his security-heavy and enthusiastic VMA rehearsal Friday afternoon (September 10), though the fans who did spot him shouted excitedly at the surprise performance.

Wearing Wayfarers and a red-and-white varsity jacket (which he alternated with a black leather jacket) over black shirt and pants, Bieber took the stage and previewed his debut VMA performance. The setup was comprised of only two round stages. Bieber, who is up for Best New Artist at Sunday's VMAs, ran through his set, which includes a medley of his biggest songs.

To very little fanfare from onlookers who didn't even realize the teen star was putting on a show in broad daylight, he told the minglers in between songs, "What's up, everybody? I love you! You want me to start?"

He didn't miss a beat during the run-through, even when a part of his mic fell to the stage. His entrance and exit will leave his fans excited as they watch from their couches, because the pop sensation is out to prove to the non-Beliebers that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

We caught up with Bieber pal Selena Gomez on Thursday, and she said her fellow teen superstar is a shoo-in for Best New Artist. "I think he deserves it!" she told MTV News in L.A., not far from the Nokia Theatre, where the show is set to take place. "I think he's worked really hard. I think he works harder than a lot of people I know, so he deserves it."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Drake Says Rat Pack Inspired VMA Performance

'I wanted to get up there and look fly,' he tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES -- You know you've made it when the chorus from your song is quoted on "SportsCenter." You know you've made it tenfold when you have a highly anticipated slot at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Drake has both, with "you fancy, huh?" permeating pop culture, and on Sunday, you'll see him team up on the big stage with Swizz Beatz and a very special guest, Mary J. Blige, for his debut VMA performance.

"All I remember is that VMAs in Vegas, in the hotel," Drake said Friday afternoon (September 10) in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre. He had just finished rehearsing for a couple of hours. "I remember being at home ... seeing Tyga perform with Wayne, and I was like, 'Man, I gotta get my ball rolling. I gotta be there one day.' It's surreal, being on that stage."

And yes, Drizzy will be surrounded by several beautiful ladies and one lovely Queen. "Fancy" was originally slated to be a Mary record, before eventually making its way to Thank Me Later. Drake and the song's producer, Swizz Beatz, decided to keep her vocals on the hook of the song.

"Her vocals are what make it so sweet," Drake beamed of having MJB perform with him. "What's more classy, more fancy than Mary J. Blige? I'm not sure. She is the epitome of class, in my opinion. It's more of a real theater production than it is a performance. It's really a lot of acting."

If rehearsals are any indication, Drake's performance will be reminiscent of the up-to-date Sinatra cool in his VMA promo spot.

"I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room," Drake recalled. "It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn't, 'Let's just rap and be epic and be huge.' They were like, 'I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.' I wanted to get up there and look fly."

Are you looking forward to Drake's VMA performance? Let us know in the comments!

Linkin Park Will Take Over An L.A. Landmark For VMAs

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:15 AM PDT

We can't reveal exactly where they'll perform 'The Catalyst,' but here are some clues.
By James Montgomery

The fact that Linkin Park are performing their brand-new single "The Catalyst" at the Video Music Awards isn't a secret anymore, but just where they'll be performing it is ... and fans won't find out until they tune in to the show on Sunday night.

Here's what we can reveal: Since LP will be performing the song for the first time on TV, and since the song itself is so positively ginormous, they've decided on a location that's certifiably epic. And given the fact that the VMAs are being held in Los Angeles, producers — and the band — decided to take over a thoroughly iconic space. And ... well, that's about all we can tell you right now.

"In previous years, we had such terrific themes. Last year, we were in New York, and so there was a New York, 'West Side Story' through line to the show," VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told MTV News. "So obviously, we wanted to do the same thing in LA. And we're looking back towards another era — in the architecture of set and some of the performances — we're thinking of iconic films from the '50s and youth culture, and all of a sudden, this location became first and foremost."

Having decided on a spot, the VMA brain trust took the idea to Linkin Park, who signed off without a second thought. After all, they know the location well.

"They were so excited, being an L.A. band, to be able to do a performance in a location like this," Ignjatovic said. "It's such a significant location to anyone who lives in Hollywood and Los Angeles. And we honestly can't believe we got it."

With a location that matches the soaring soundscapes of "The Catalyst," Ignjatovic and his crew set about finding an appropriately huge way to capture it all. Which, of course, meant plenty of eye-popping aerial shots.

"It's an epic song and an epic location, so, in true Hollywood cinematic style, you want to have breathtaking aerial shots," Ignjatovic said. "The whole idea is scale and beautiful visuals. It fits perfectly with the song. It's going to be awesome, trust me."

Where would you want to see Linkin Park perform "The Catalyst"? Share your ideas in the comments below.

Eminem's VMA-Opening Performance Will Be A 'Triumph'

'It's a testament to the year he's had, his return to the top,' awards-show executive producer says.
By James Montgomery

Eminem's voyage from the depths of addiction to the top of the Billboard albums chart is perhaps the music story of 2010, so it's fitting that he'll head into Sunday night's Video Music Awards as the most-nominated male artist, with nods for Best Male Video, Best Hip-Hop Video and, of course, Video of the Year for his massive "Not Afraid."

And, given all that, it's equally fitting that he's opening the show too. While the details of his performance have been kept a closely guarded secret, we now know a few bits of key information: He will be drawing heavily from both his rocky road to redemption and his triumphant ascension back to the top.

"Eminem is opening the show, and the theme of his performance is 'triumph,' " VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. "It's a testament to the year he's had, his return to the top.

"He tells a story, and the viewers will definitely pick up on that."

Rehearsals for Em's performance are sure to be a closed-set affair, so we're a little short on specifics, but it sounds very much like he'll be taking his fans on a personal voyage. Of course, that's part of why his Recovery has been such a huge success: He doesn't flinch, and he doesn't hide from the truth. The album is an incredibly personal listen, not to mention a particularly brave effort. And come VMA night — where he's the odds-on favorite to take home plenty of hardware — he'll continue to get personal and continue to be brave. It's what makes him the best in the business, really.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. 'I used to like her,' reality star teases about VMA host.

Everyone loves a good catfight, and it seems like one just might happen at Sunday's Video Music Awards.

VMA presenter and reality starlet Kim Kardashian admits that, since host Chelsea Handler called Justin Bieber a "two face" and blamed Kardashian for stealing her man, things have been tense.

"Chelsea and I have this, you know, [beef]," she joked at a QVC Fashion's Night Out event in New York on Friday (September 10). "I used to like her. We're on the same network, but now it's just, you know ... we can't really be in the same room together. It gets really bad on the E! studios. They have totally roped off Chelsea on one section, me on the other. You know, it's, I don't want to talk about it."

Handler has been quite open about her discomfort with Bieber's love-'em-and-leave-'em style. "He's using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I'm not gonna fall for that," she said. "I'm 35 years old. I only have about five good years left in me, and I'm not going to waste my time on that guy."

While Kardashian might not be excited to run into Handler on Sunday night, she is looking forward to the possibility of her pal, Bieber, taking home a Moonman for Best New Artist. "That's amazing! I wish him the best of luck," she said. "I hope he wins it. I don't know who he's up against, but I hope he wins."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Kanye West Drops 'G.O.O.D. Friday'

They still haven't made an official announcement, but for all intents and purposes, can we just acknowledge that Pusha T is at least part of Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music family?

Several weeks ago, Push danced around the subject, saying, "I mean, you know, I been to Hawaii. Hawaii is a nice place. Good music is made down there, ya know? So, yeah, I was there. I can't say too much about that. I think everybody's gonna be in for a big surprise. A very big surprise."

On Friday (September 10), Mr. West dropped the latest offering from his G.O.O.D. Friday movement, also called "G.O.O.D Friday." The song features Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Common, Charlie Wilson and ... Pusha T.

"As 'Ye flips the piano, the mood swings like the change of a channel," Pusha raps on the record. "He's heating up like they wrapped him in flannel. Selling kilos through your iPod Nano."

Cudi sings, "I know the city getting ready for me," while Common is also right in pocket with lyrics such as: "I'm in thinker mode/ Eyes load, I let the sky hold the thoughts." Common and West exchange bars at the beginning. Big Sean talks about his exploits with some fast women.

Aside from the new song, there was also that Pharrell co-sign of Push heading to 'Ye's label. "I think that's gonna be amazing," Pharrell said. "[Pusha] had been working with 'Ye. I told him, 'You should do that.' We made a lot of great records together, and we'll continue to make great records. I want him to grow and get other experiences out in the world. He's gotta figure that out. He's gotta go out there and see it. Make no mistake, lyrically, that kid is one of the greats — him and his brother. Lyrically, those guys are really serious. They're well-respected by all of the good dudes. Jay-Z loves them, T.I., Jeezy loves them. All of your favorite rappers, they appreciate a Pusha line or a Malice line. They do. I'm saying with respect for all those artists — I work with those artists. I know the conversations we had. They like what they do. It's been a long time coming for Pusha and what it is he's trying to do. He's gonna get it. And Malice too."

Oh, and Kanye shouted Pusha out onstage during his remarkable Rosewood private show in New York last month.

Enough evidence for you? Let us know your thoughts on the Pusha T/ G.O.O.D. Music situation in the comments, and share your reviews of the new song!

Usher's VMA Performance To Be Worthy Of A 'King'

Awards-show executive producer teases Ush's 'best televised dance routine' in years.
By James Montgomery

LOS ANGELES — The success of Usher's "OMG" is as much a testament to his unyielding popularity as an artist as it is his ability to, well, dance his ass off. That's particularly apparent in the Video Music Award-nominated video for the song, which features Ush and a bevy of beauties popping, locking, pivoting and posing in ways we never thought possible. Quite simply, the man can move.

So when it came time to plot out his VMA performance, well, Usher's team -- and the brain trust behind the show -- didn't have a whole lot of trouble coming up with a concept. The dancing was going to be front and center. The only question was: How could they take things to the next level.

"We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher," VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. "We said to him, 'We want to do the best televised dance routine that you've done in years. Let's show why you're the king.' "

And Ush's Sunday night performance is very much an affair worthy of royalty. Full of eye-popping moves, hip-dipping dancers and more special effects than a Hollywood blockbuster, it makes full use of not just the epic VMA stage (which practically engulfs the entirety of Nokia Theater), but the space behind it.

While we can't give away too many details, based on the rehearsals we saw Thursday, the off-the-wall choreography is only part of the attraction. There are lasers and LED lights, stunts, slides and even some props. Like we said, it's kind of like a Hollywood blockbuster. And kind of a coronation too. After all, Usher is the king.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. First they collaborated on "Eenie Meenie," and then they hit the road together on Justin Bieber's My World Tour. Now, the pair are set to release a mixtape together -- which Kingston teased would feature Biebs' sweet vocals and some rhymes.

"It should be out in, like, three weeks," Kingston told MTV News. "It's amazing! It's the exclusive. Justin Bieber, Sean Kingston, it's called Our World. It's amazing."

Kingston even teased a song or two fans will hear on the soon-to-be-released mixtape of covers. "We did [Travie McCoy's] 'Billionaire.' We did [Soulja Boy Tell'em's] 'Pretty Boy Swag.' We did so much stuff. We just took the beat over and made it our own."

In fact, Bieber, who has rapped at times, will be displaying his skills on the mixtape. "Yeah, he's doing some rapping," he teased. "[He's] pretty tight, nice for someone who doesn't do it that much."

Until the mixtape hits the shelves, Kingston is gearing up to support his pal at the VMAs, where Bieber is performing and up for Best New Artist. And he even has a date in mind. "I think I'm gonna [bring] my mom," he said. "After the VMAs, I drop her back off, and then it's time to party."

Speaking of that party known as the VMAs, the night's host, Chelsea Handler, admitted that Bieber's music really speaks to her. "He knows so much about romance," she said. "If you listen to the lyrics of 'Baby, Baby, Baby,' or is it just called 'Baby'? I have to say it three times, 'cause it makes my heart thump. He's obviously been around the block. I mean, I don't know why he's pretending he's not a sexual deviant, because he is."

Lady Gaga, Pink And More Outrageous VMA Fashion

Perez Hilton, Fergie and Amber Rose have also overdone it at past shows.

All VMA-bound celebrities take note: Steer clear of being a fashion don't. Before Sunday's show, MTV News chatted with celebrity stylist Derek Roche who warned not to overdo it.

"I think the easiest way is not to think. It's about simplicity," he said. "People think they have to go and be all dolled up and they have to compete with Rihanna and Beyoncé and they have to compete with Puff Daddy. Don't!"

His advice? "Just be who you are. It's all about being natural."

In other words: Don't be like some of these celebrities and their infamous fashion over-dos. MTV News looks back at some of the more interesting pieces celebrities have dared to wear at the annual awards show.

Lady Gaga: Yes, we love Alexander McQueen moments, but we felt like Gaga got caught red-handed here in this bizarre, red-lace getup.

Amber Rose: We're not sure if it was the skintight catsuit that left no curve to the imagination or the cognac accessory that made this look a bit too much for us.

Perez Hilton: We believe in keeping things safe, but the yellow latex gloves from the 2009 carpet were over-the-top. Ditto on the color-clashing ensemble.

Fergie: We won't complain about a good naughty fashion turn, but this barely there 2006 outfit wasn't one of our favorites.

Coco: There's something to be said for leaving a wee bit to the imagination.

Macy Gray: Well, this is one way to think outside the box when it comes to marketing your album. The raspy-voiced singer presented next to LL Cool J in 2001 wearing this outfit to promote her then-coming album The Id.

Pink: This outfit totally encapsulates Pink's music sensibilities: She's got a punky, urban edge and decided to show that mix with this 2000 ensemble.

Tommy Lee: If you move your eyes away from Pamela Anderson's glittery pants, you'll notice that her rocker date wore nothing more than a trench coat and sneakers to the 1999 VMAs.

Rose McGowan: Dental floss might have been thicker than the stuff holding the material on McGowan's dress together at the 1998 awards show. Thankfully, the wind didn't blow the wrong way for Marilyn Manson's date.

Dennis Rodman: Maybe Rodman should have worn a neutral color? Eh, never mind. This sparkly midriff-baring getup still was a wrong move to make at the 1995 awards.

Which VMA look is the most outrageous? Let us know in the comments!

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Florence And The Machine's VMA Performance Will Be 'Otherworldly'

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:58 AM PDT

'We want viewers to watch it and say, 'That was spectacular,' ' awards-show exec producer says.
By James Montgomery

Florence Welch at her VMA rehearsal on Friday
Photo: John Shearer/Wireimage.com

LOS ANGELES -- Florence and the Machine have performed at award shows in the past, but they've mostly been back at home in the U.K., and they've definitely never been as eye-catching, ambitious and downright exuberant as her upcoming performance at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. It's a matter of necessity.

After all, around the rest of the world, Florence Welch is a very big deal, a critical and commercial darling with an armload of hits and a devoted fanbase. But here in the U.S., she's just starting to break through, thanks in no small part to "Dog Days Are Over," a triumphant tune that's recently become the soundtrack to many a TV show and commercial (most recently, it appeared in trailers for Julia Roberts' "Eat Pray Love").

So her VMA performance is clearly a big deal, another (rather large) steppingstone on her way to Stateside success. And, somewhat accordingly, everyone involved with the show is aiming high.

"People have heard the song on television, but maybe those people haven't made the connection to Florence the artist, so that's part of what her performance is going to be about," Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. "It's going to be beautiful, breathtakingly done and otherworldly. And maybe it will help launch her here in the States. We want viewers to watch it and say, 'That was spectacular.' "

Judging from what we saw in rehearsals Friday (September 9), that may very well be the reaction. Part classic revue, part joyous sing-along, part kinetic, hippie-esque freakout, it's a strangely perfect summation of Welch herself, not to mention a rather fitting tribute to her VMA-nominated "Dog Days" clip. There may not have been any explosions (or floral arrangements) -- like Welch promised when we spoke to her Thursday -- it hardly mattered. This is definitely going to be a big performance, one people are going to be talking about. And yes, they'll probably be saying, "That was spectacular."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Kelley L. Carter

Hosting MTV's Video Music Awards can be a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. During Thursday's show run-through, VMA host Chelsea Handler worked on hitting her marks, and we captured behind-the-scenes footage of her talking with her crew.

"This is really disgusting," the funnywoman deadpanned to the crew gathered around her. "This is really dirty. I don't feel so good."

Of course, we're not exactly sure what she was talking about, but we do know that Handler has been sizing up her post-VMA hookup possibilities. When MTV News interviewed her earlier, Handler talked about which rappers she might like to canoodle with once her hosting gig has wrapped up — including multiple nominee Eminem.

"I'll probably have sex with him after the show is over," Handler said. "Probably. I don't see why I wouldn't."

Another potential Handler hookup? Master beatmaker Swizz Beatz. She digs the newlywed producer's handle. "I like Swizz Beatz, just because I would like to yell out in bed, 'Swizz Beatz! Keep it coming!' " she said.

Handler is also stoked to be in the presence of Lady Gaga. "She's pretty successful right about now. She's got some good music," Handler said of Gaga, who has a record 13 VMA nods. "She's got a lot going on."

Plus, Handler loves Gaga's fashion.

"It's always a jackpot, isn't it?" she said about Gaga's fashion choices. "Whatever she wears is amazing. You could watch her for hours just eat cereal. You don't even need the cereal."

J. Cole To Open Eminem/Jay-Z New York Concerts

Roc Nation MC will warm up Home and Home Tour crowds.

One of Jay-Z's promising Roc Nation signees will warm up the crowd when Hov and Eminem's Home and Home Tour hits NYC.

Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC J. Cole will open for the hip-hop gods when their joint show heads to Yankee Stadium next week, according to RapRadar.com. The Warm Up mixtape rapper will open the show along with VMA nominee B.o.B, who worked his magic at the tour's Detroit outings.

Upstart MC J. Cole is the latest addition to a tour lineup that has been heavy on historic appearances from rap greats. Inimitable beatmaster and hip-hop pioneer Dr. Dre, G-Unit boss 50 Cent and Toronto star Drake all surprised thousands of fans at Jigga and Shady's Comerica Park shows last week.

The opening slot is another milestone in what has shaped up to be a major year for Cole. After becoming the first artist to ink a deal with Jay's Roc Nation imprint and stepping out on tour with the rock-star MC last year, Cole was dubbed a Freshman '10 rapper by XXL magazine in March. The same month, the MC headlined his first NYC show, ably satisfying the city's finicky music fans. In July, he was a top-five finalist for MTV News' "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010" and can be heard on the smoky hit R&B single "All I Want Is You" from fellow newcomer Miguel.

Cole's single "Who Dat" has hit the airwaves, and the rising lyricist told MTV News earlier this year that he's checking out the successful blueprint his mentor Jay established when it comes to rolling out his debut LP.

"You might have an incredible single or an incredible song, and if you just set it up the wrong way, it won't go as far as it could've went," he said. "I feel like Jay's last album had the perfect setup, single-wise. So it's really about finding the right setup, and then from there, it's up to the people to decide."

Amanda Bynes' on-and-off relationship with Twitter appears to have reached a low point.

The Twitter account @chicky, which the actress famously used to overshare and rant about her personal and professional life, has been deleted.

Bynes, who has sent out childhood pics and declared her very specific taste in men on her Twitter page, famously tweeted her retirement from Hollywood in June.

"I don't love acting anymore, so I've stopped doing it," the starlet wrote at the time. "I know 24 is a young age to retire but you heard it here first I've #retired."

Bynes' announcement came as a shock to her rep, who was blindsided by the news after speaking to her client days earlier and noting she "sounded great."

However, the actress had a change of heart and took to her Twitter page about a month later to reveal she was back on the scene, writing, "I've unretired."

This latest move could be related to a desire Bynes' once expressed about keeping a safe distance from the sometimes harsh glare of the spotlight.

"I don't want to have my face on everything. I just don't want to be some young brat who is everywhere," a then-18-year-old Bynes told MTV News in 2005. "It sickens me."

The young actress also copped to not always being on the same page as her Hollywood peers.

"I don't really relate to that many people who are my age, especially in this business."

Fans may not be getting updates about her fluctuating retirement status anymore, but moviegoers will be able to catch Bynes in the upcoming flick "Easy A." The actress plays a judgmental teen out to ruin the life of a faux good-time girl in the high school comedy, which hits theaters September 17.

Fantasia Says 'Nobody Was There To Help Me'

'A lot of times [industry people] are there to get what they can get,' singer says on 'Wendy Williams Show.'

It's been one month since Fantasia's suicide attempt and it seems the pain of that experience is still fresh. The singer has been steadily promoting her new album, Back to Me, and when she visited "The Wendy Williams Show" on Friday (September 10) she opened up about her recent drug overdose and said many members of her professional entourage had left her side.

"At the time, I wasn't really thinking about anybody," Fantasia told host Wendy Williams when asked whether she had considered daughter Zion.

"Nobody knows how heavy it gets. You see the glitz and the glamour and you think, 'They got it, they got it all,' but a lot of times when you come into this industry you have people that say that they are there for you, but a lot of times they are just there to get what they can get or because money is involved," she said, starting to cry.

The single mom revealed that many of her supposed confidants were nowhere to be found during her time of need.

"I am 26 years old, and so many times, I've looked around and noticed that everybody that started with me is now gone and nobody was there to help me clean it up. So I had to do it all by myself."

Fantasia's overdose occurred shortly after a lawsuit was filed by the wife of Antwaun Cook against the songstress charging that she had been in an adulterous relationship with Cook. Cook's lawyer, Nicole Sodoma said the singer was not responsible for breaking up the marriage. "He knew Fantasia Barrino but the failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union — Paula and Antwaun," Sodoma said in a statement.

The singer is focused now on moving past her dark period by speaking openly about her story in an effort to connect with her fans. The "American Idol" alum's recent LP debuted on the Billboard 200 at #2.

Ne-Yo Recalls Annoying His Teacher On 'When I Was 17'

After notching hits like "Miss Independent" and penning jams for divas like Beyoncé and Rihanna, singer/songwriter Ne-Yo has become one of the music industry's most reliable go-to guys for silky pop and R&B hits. But back in the mid-'90s, when Ne-Yo was 17, he was carving out a reputation as a talented illustrator.

"I went to a performing-arts high school. I wasn't even there for music," the singer says in the latest episode of "When I Was 17," which premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. "I was there for visual design and drawing and painting and stuff like that."

Ne-Yo's bud Kevin reveals that the future hitmaker has always showed an undeniable aptitude for sketching.

"Ne-Yo's a great artist," he says. "This guy can draw. He can seriously draw."

Since he was attending a school focused on the arts, Ne-Yo remembers being able to devote serious time to his passion.

"The way that this school worked, for the first half of your day, it was a regular high school — math class, social studies ... The last hour or so of your school day was dedicated solely to your major," he explains.

The environment turned out to be a plentiful source of inspiration — just not the type his instructors were expecting.

"I remember our classroom was just weird," Ne-Yo recalls. "[It was] just a really, really weird place to be for an hour."

He says the room was filled with things like animal heads and mannequin parts.

"Of course, when you're in this weird room, your imagination just goes all over the place," he continues. "The teacher would set up a still life — it would be a bowl of fruit or something — and then they would tell us to draw the bowl of fruit. I would always take whatever it is and just mutate the hell out of it. I would make it to where ... they're fighting each other. So, the orange has a knife ... and the apple is about to shoot him and he stabs him ... and there's blood. I would do stuff like that."

So, why did Ne-Yo pit his inanimate subjects against each other in tense stand-offs instead of just rendering the simple bowl of fruit in front of him? According to the singer, it's the same reason many teenagers do knucklehead stuff: "Just to piss the teacher off."

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring B.o.B, Usher and Ne-Yo — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Lady Gaga, Producer Drop Lawsuits Against Each Other

Rob Fusari initially sought $30.5 million arguing Gaga owed success, in part, to him.

The romance is over, and so is the legal action.

Lady Gaga and a former boyfriend/music producer Rob Fusari have both dismissed lawsuits filed against each other. The Associated Press reports that court papers filed this week show that Gaga and Fusari have both agreed to drop the dueling suits.

Fusari originally filed in March in New York and said he wanted $30.5 million, but the AP reported that it was still unclear on Friday (September 10) whether the two made any financial deal in dismissing both suits.

Fusari's beef with Gaga was that he had helped to launch the pop star's career, but hadn't been properly compensated for his effort in the aftermath of their failed relationship. Fusari — who has also worked on Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" movie theme and Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" — teamed up with the singer back in March 2006. He said it was he who persuaded her to trade in her rock style for dance beats.

Fusari and Gaga co-wrote songs such as "Paparazzi" and "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich," which would appear on her debut album, The Fame, and in the initial lawsuit, he claimed that he transformed the singer born Stefani Germanotta into Lady Gaga, a name adapted from Queen's "Radio Ga Ga."

Per the lawsuit, Lady Gaga and Fusari's relationship turned romantic and then became a business partnership in May 2006, when they created a joint venture called Team Love Child, LLC, to promote her career. Fusari's share was 20 percent, according the agreement.

Gaga may have been compelled to drop the suit to focus on her current success: She's up for an astounding 13 Moonmen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

'Jersey Shore' High Five: Flying Hair And Hate Sex

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 03:57 AM PDT

From a house-wide brawl to Vinny and Angelina's out-of-nowhere hookup, we recap this week's episode of 'Jersey Shore.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

When we last left the "Jersey Shore," the housemates were in the middle of mediating a highly emotional dispute or, as most viewers saw it, getting ready to throw down.

Things came to a head after Vinny let JWoww know that Angelina was telling the rest of the gang about Pauly D's "drunkity" state. Eventually, the issue turned into a smackdown between JWoww and Sammi, who were already giving each other the side-eye over the infamous "anonymous" letter to Sammi (which, we know, was penned by Snooki and JWoww) detailing Ronnie's conquests. But that was just the first five minutes.

Here's a recap of the biggest moments from Thursday's "Jersey Shore":

5. Ferry Love

After Vinny called out Angie's town-crier approach to Pauly's drunken night, the Staten Islanders spent most of the episode going at each other's necks. Angelina even laid out her distaste for Vinchenzo at the gelato shop, telling Mike, "He's not even good-looking, so he needs to jump off the 'I'm good-looking' train."

But by the episode's final cab ride home, guess which two ferry-riders were sucking face in the back seat? Even the dude who laced Angie with a spankin' new Fossil timepiece didn't get all that.

4. Snooki the Multitasker

Snooks finally got some action! Hurrah!

Apparently, she didn't waste precious bar banter coaxing details from her date and waited instead until they hit the sheets. The late-night canoodling woke up roomie JWoww with a mixture of moans and queries like, "How far do you live from here?"

3. Is Ronnie R. Kelly?

Ron-Ron has been pretty much dogging Sammi for most of the season and, of course, the resident "Shore" philosopher Mike served up an insightful assessment of the situation.

"He's been peeing on her, and she's still with him," The Situation observed. "This is like when you're a little kid and you find out Santa Claus is dead."

And everyone knows that finding out Santa died — instead of, you know, never existing in the first place — is way more traumatic.

2. Girlfight

JWoww and Sammi didn't hold back in the epic episode-opening catfight, which, as Ron-Ron put it, was "like putting firecrackers in a Dumpster."

The brawl sent parts of the décor flying off the wall and needed the juicehead might of the guy castmates to finally break it up. An explosion of trash is a pretty apt description of the whole affair.

1. The Aftermath

The next morning, Sammi picked through the wreckage in the kitchen, stepping over yanked-out extensions and crusty lunchmeat to find her earring, while JWoww called out from work to attend to her ruined acrylics.

As Pauly put it: "It's like World War III went down last night. It's crazy."

Watch "Jersey Shore" every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
