Lil Wayne Calls Rock-Heavy Rebirth A 'Freedom Album'

The more Lil Wayne's rock-leaning LP Rebirth is delayed, the more fans wonder if the superstar rapper can really pull off the genre-switching feat he's attempting.

The project has been pushed back several times already, and producer Dre of Cool & Dre told MTV News back in April that the project wouldn't necessarily be all rock. But in the November 7 edition of Billboard magazine, the Cash Money lyricist emphatically states he'll be rocking out on Rebirth.

In the interview, which appears to have taken place before Weezy pleaded guilty to felony gun possession last week, the MC also assured fans that he knows exactly what he's doing with this foray into rock.

"Yes, the album is still rock," he explained. "I play guitar on 80 percent of the songs, and there's a lot of rock influences and rock beats. I also have Travis Barker on the album. But I don't want people to think I'm trying to do something I can't do. Don't think you're going to put on the album and hear me screaming and singing. ... Don't worry about that. [Laughs.] When people hear me say rock, they may get a little scared like, 'Oh, God. What is he going to do?' When I said I was doing a rock album, it was about doing a freedom thing. This album isn't hip-hop. When I do my Carter albums, I know I've got to rap, I know I've got to spit. I know the words I've got to say and the subjects I've got to talk about. I also know the things I shouldn't say, the things I shouldn't talk about. There's none of those limits on this album. I say what I want, how I want. That's what this album is: a freedom album."

Wayne repeated that Rebirth and Young Money's crew album will be released together. The projects are tentatively slated for a December 15 release.

A number of tracks from Rebirth have appeared online prematurely, to Wayne's chagrin. But he said he's retooled the album in an effort to keep fans off balance.

"I had to add new cuts, because a lot of things leaked, making people think they had an idea of what I was doing with Rebirth and what it would sound like," he said. "And I hated that, because I never want anybody to think they know what I'm doing until I present it. So what I did was make it totally different. I flipped it."

In addition to those projects, Wayne is also overseeing his protégé Drake's debut, Thank Me Later, expected to drop at the top of 2010. He said the upstart star is hands on with his project, and so far, Wayne hasn't chimed in. He said he wouldn't be surprised if the Toronto MC were already finished.

50 Cent And Polow Da Don Create A 'Hit Record' With 'Baby By Me'

If at first you don't succeed, try, try (and try and try and try) again.

It took five attempts before 50 Cent and producer Polow Da Don could finally lock into a studio session together for the G-Unit superstar's "Baby by Me" track, but once they connected, their chemistry was instant. Polow said Fif knew right away they had a hot one on their hands.

"He came in the studio, we had some time set up — we had, like, five sessions; the other four fell through," Polow told MTV News. "The fifth one, we got together, he came in and that was the first joint I played him. He said, 'That's a hit record.' "

The Atlanta-based beatsmith said Fif only needed 20 minutes to craft the track. The song is the lead single for 50's forthcoming album, Before I Self Destruct, and features Ne-Yo on the hook. Polow said he and 50 settled on a hook for the song but after sending the track over to Ne-Yo, the songwriter reworked it into its current incarnation.

"We had the record done," Polow said. "What's so crazy [is] we had a different hook on it. We went back and forth with the hook, but then we sent it to Ne-Yo and he wrote his own hook and that was that."

"When [50] first sent me the joint, I was like, 'You don't need me for this,' " Ne-Yo told MTV News recently during the video shoot for the song. "I thought the beat was hot, what he was talking about was hot — I just tried to add to the hotness."

There are two versions of "Baby by Me," one featuring Ne-Yo and another with newcomer JoVan Dais. But despite the syrupy single, 50 has said his next album will be his most aggressive yet, even more so than his debut.

"Before I Self Destruct is absolutely harder than Get Rich or Die Tryin' or other projects in between," 50 said.

Jay-Z Says It's 'Incredible' Hearing His Music At Yankee Stadium

'It's beautiful ... beyond explanation,' the MC says of Yankee players using his songs for at-bat music.

Before his World Series performance of "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z got to play the field — literally. Hov told ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" that he got a chance to roam the green and imagined catching a ball and doubling a guy out at home plate.

"I felt like a kid," he said. "The field is beautiful. I've never been that close to the field. Walking around, I jumped over the center-field fence and everything, like I was catching a home run."

Talking to MTV News earlier in the week, before Thursday's performance with Alicia Keys, Hov noted he loves attending games at Yankee Stadium and hearing his music.

"Jeter plays 'Empire State' every time he's at bat. A-Rod does 'Already Home' and 'Reminder,' " Jay said. "[Robinson] Cano does 'Run This Town.' It's like the Jay-Z compilation at the stadium. It's beautiful.

"Incredible," Jay added. "Beyond explanation. Just the whole fact, being in Yankee Stadium, really interacting, knowing the players. I grew up a fan of he Yankees — Reggie Jackson, Mickey Rivers, Chris Chambliss, God bless Thurman Munson, all these guys. To be there and interact with all these guys [the current Yankee team], they're throwing the Roc sign up — it's fantastic."

Ironically, Jay couldn't stay for the show. He jumped in his Maybach and was driven out of the stadium just minutes after his performance with Alicia Keys, as he had a flight to catch for a show in Canada. Hov did keep abreast of the game, though, noting that his beloved Yankees won 3-1.

"It's a fantastic series," he told "Mike and Mike." "I figured the Phillies are going to be tough and we'll take it in seven." And you know Hov does not lose.

After a series of sneak peeks and teases on her Web site and Twitter, Britney Spears officially debuted the music video for her hit single "3" on Friday (October 30). The sexy, fast-paced clip for the song, which will be included on The Singles Collection when it's released next month, made its big debut on her site.

The video, shot by director Diane Martel earlier this month, is a series of glamour shots and dance breaks. The video opens with Britney in a sparkly little black dress, spritzing herself with perfume and putting on mascara. Then it cuts to a shot of her holding her hair up provocatively and singing the song's sexy opening lines: "1,2,3/ Not only you and me/ Got 180 degrees/ And I'm caught in between."

The video quickly becomes a montage of Britney doing what she does best: being sexy. Shots of the singer in black and white, wearing a halter-cut leotard in a steam-filled room, are cut with images of just her legs in lacy tights walking across the screen.

Britney also does a lot of dancing in close-up shots, where you can't fully see her whole body. In some of the dance sequences she's flanked by male dancers or standing in a lineup of sexy women who do acrobatics on a raised ballerina bar as she sashays around. There are a few moments in the video where Britney's personality shines. She smiles at the song's tongue-in-cheek lyrics, particularly when she finishes the song's bridge about loving multiple people at once.

The video ends with Britney looking directly into the camera before it fades to black. Late Thursday, before the video premiered, she tweeted, "Can't wait for ya'll to see my new video tomorrow morning. I think you're really going to like it!"

See what Britney fans had to say about the video here. And share your own reviews of "3" in the comments section below!

Talk about an awesome — if awkward — honor. Soulja Boy Tell'em revealed to MTV News this week that he will have the unique distinction of appearing on the upcoming albums by both Chris Brown and Rihanna.

"With this particular project [it was] like, 'Whoa!' because it was like, 'Yo, I need you to do something for Rihanna's album. You got 11 hours. Go," Soulja Boy said about the last-minute call to work on an unspecified track from Rihanna's upcoming Rated R disc.

"It was like, 'What?' " The challenge, he said, was how to cook up some verses that would help make a #1 hit in such a short time. Luckily, he had plenty of experience with working fast, thanks to the 30 minutes he said it took him to write his breakthrough hit, "Crank That."

The pressure was not as intense when he got the call to guest on a track from Rihanna's ex, Brown. "I got nothing but love for Chris, that's my homeboy," said Soulja of the singer, whose Graffiti will be his first release since his assault on Rihanna in February. "He called me up and he was like, 'Yo, I need you on this song for my album. Will you come through?' "

The answer, of course, was yes — and the result is a tune titled "She's Bad."

"My approach to it was, if me and Chris Brown ever did a song together it got to be the best song ever," he said. "When people hear it, it gotta be automatic, be in all the kids' heads, all the girls definitely gotta love it, all the females gotta love it. That was my approach to it. I was just thinking, 'What is the slickest lines I could say to a female to make them fall in love with this record?' "

Fans can hear the results when Rated R drops on November 23 and Graffiti is released three weeks later.

Lady Gaga Offers Halloween-Costume Advice To Fans: 'Lots Of Latex'

If you're planning on dressing up like the star, make sure you have 'wigs and high heels.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga's look is anything but simple — she's usually rocking a combination of platinum-blond hair, heavy makeup, a wacky getup of some sort and heels. And while she often favors crazy hats, she regularly eschews pants. So as Halloween quickly approaches, prepare yourselves: There will most likely be a few Lady Gaga impersonators walking the streets of your city.

MTV News caught up with the singer herself, who offered a list of the most essential items needed for a convincing Gaga costume. "Wigs, purple shampoo and high heels. Lots of latex."

Halloween would also seem like the perfect chance for Gaga to finally be able to roam the streets unnoticed among a sea of copycats, but as it turns out it's actually a better time for her to just be Stefani Germanotta. "I'm just gonna not dress up, because I have been unable to just go out and have, like, a good hammered evening out ... sloppy, like maybe face-down somewhere in a bar," she explained on New York's Z-100 radio station on Tuesday morning (October 27).

So, Gaga has opted to just have a good time and not put the pressure on herself to come up with an elaborate costume. But, she did come up with a pretty clever idea for the day. "So I'm pretty excited about going out and not dressing up, because I heard that a lot of people are dressing like me," she said. "I should do some kind of, like, 'Where's Waldo?' competition? Like 'Where's Gaga?' "

It's Halloween Week, the spookiest time of the year and also the most fun. So as the leaves fall and it gets a bit colder, we here at MTV News decided to pay homage to the holiday by rounding up some of your favorite celebrities' Halloween memories and costume ideas — some even offer advice on how to dress up like them this year. So brace yourselves: You're in for one horrifying week!

Miley Cyrus may be friends with both Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, but that doesn't mean that the teen queen has any idea if the two are really dating. But, if they are, she's really happy for them.

"The Taylors? Oh, I don't know. I'm not into the drama. I have no idea," she told Chicago's B96 morning show during a tour stop earlier this week, where she also talked about her recent departure from Twitter. "But I've known Taylor [Lautner] since I was really young."

Cyrus, who starred in the "Hannah Montana" movie alongside Swift earlier this year, shared that she was once also cast in a flick with Lautner. "When he did '[The Adventures of] Sharkboy and Lavagirl,' it was between me and somebody else, and then I ended up doing 'Hannah Montana,' so I've known him for, like, a really long time," she said, adding that she fully approves of the couple — if they are dating. "I mean, if he's happy and if she's happy, sounds good to me."

Taylor Swift recently played coy during interviews when asked about her rumored romance with the "Twilight" star and her "Valentine's Day" co-star.

"I don't know, he's an amazing guy and we're really close ... and ah ... yep," she told CMT Radio Live's Cody Alan in an interview, before later in the day giggling with Ellen DeGeneres when asked about Lautner. "We're in a movie together, and I am really excited about seeing it."

In December, Robin Thicke will be giving fans Sex Therapy on his new album, and he'll have a few guests sitting in on those sessions.

In addition to Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg and British chanteuse Estelle, Thicke will be joined by Jay-Z. Thicke said he still can't believe he got our Hottest MC in the Game to join him on a track.

"Working with Jay-Z [came about because] he came by the studio, and he heard the album. He was very excited," Thicke explained to MTV News on the set of his "Sex Therapy" music video. "He jumped on a track called 'Me I Play.' "

Thicke said the track hearkens back to the soulful hip-hop from the early '90s. "[It's] kind of like a De La Soul kind of song, but he was really excited about it," Thicke said, adding that the collaboration was incredible. "To work with him was a dream come true. It was one of the best days of my life."

The singer has already been getting rave reviews for the album — he's just hoping no one is lying to him. "The album, as a whole, is actually the first time I didn't write and produce everything myself," he revealed. "I tried to create a new sound that I had never had before. A lot of people are telling me it's the best album yet, so I'm really excited. I hope that they're right!"

Foo Fighters Welcome Mixed Reactions To New Single 'Wheels'

It's hard to believe that Foo Fighters, the band that Dave Grohl admits he started "almost on a dare," have been around for 15 years and have cranked out countless hit singles. Those tracks will be celebrated on the upcoming Greatest Hits, a compilation of the group's biggest smashes, including "Learn to Fly," "Best of You" and "Everlong." The album also contains two new songs: a rugged rocker called "Word Forward" and the new single "Wheels," which the band debuted on the lawn of the White House over the summer and which just got a video release.

"On the last tour, we decided to treat soundcheck as a place to write songs and not just to practice," Dave Grohl told MTV News. "So we picked these two songs and called Butch Vig — who I haven't worked with since 1991, when he worked on Nirvana's Nevermind — and he came in and produced them."

Despite the group's devoted following, fan reaction has been somewhat tepid to the group's latest single. But Grohl wouldn't have it any other way. "We kind of took it in this direction that we haven't gone before, which, as a band, is exciting," he explained. "You do a song like 'Wheels' and people go, 'Really? That's the Foo Fighters?' People get all scared. 'Oh no, is that the direction they're going?' It's one of those songs that our biggest fans hate. I like that we have songs that lots of different people either enjoy or dislike."

Greatest Hits will be in stores November 3, and the band will appear in an episode of "VH1 Storytellers" on November 27.

Edward Norton Promises To Beat Sarah Palin's Marathon Time

Two-time Oscar nominee will be running in Sunday's New York City Marathon.

Edward Norton's an Obama guy. Long before the first-term senator from Illinois secured a four-year stay at the White House, Norton began producing a documentary about Obama's political life. The film, "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama," premieres on HBO next week. A few days before then, Norton is set to run in the ING New York City Marathon, and among his top goals is beating the former vice-presidential candidate who Obama defeated in the election.

Back in Alaska in 2005, Sarah Palin ran 26-plus miles in under four hours. And when he stopped by MTV News recently, Norton swore he'd destroy that time in this Sunday's race.

"I'm gonna beat Sarah Palin like a rug!" he joked during the interview. "Palin I would like to beat just on principle."

Norton is running as part of the Maasai Marathon, a group dedicated to raising money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which promotes conservation, education and health services in communities in southern Kenya. While he trains, he's been tweeting up a storm in an effort to raise money and awareness for the cause. Among the marathon participants is Samson Parashina, a Maasai who met Norton when the actor came to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and who is now president of the trust.

"He's a good runner," Parashina said of Norton. "We've been running over the lava rocks in Kenya — the terrain is very uneven — and he was going very well."

"I'm often slower than the Maasai, which is to be expected," the two-time Oscar nominee said. "But then I see something like a lion print, and then suddenly, amazingly, I'm as fast as they are."

So is training for a marathon harder than making movies? "David Fincher's films are kind of a marathon, but they're at night and you do things like repetitively bang your head into the floor," Norton, who you'll remember starred in "Fight Club," decided. "No, this is definitely one of the hardest things I think we've all ever done."
