Behind the Beats: Serani

Serani may be best known for his breakout hit "No Games," but the emerging Jamaican artist first made a name for himself crafting songs for some of his homeland's biggest stars.

"I'm a musician from birth, I played the keys from birth," Serani said. "As time went on, when I became a teenager I was listening to Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Capleton and Sizzla. I would listen to the beats and thought, 'Why are they on some of these? They could do better.' And I knew I had the talent to do it."

He got his start working as a musician, contributing to Wayne Marshall songs. Eventually he formed Daseca Productions with two partners, and the trio were able to power hits by some of the same artists Serani listened to coming up. Their big break came when they scored a couple of knockout hits, producing Tony Matterhorn's "Dutty Wine" and Sean Paul's "We Be Burning."

" 'We Be Burning' was the first real big move," Serani said.

The producer had long been a frequent collaborator with Mavado, and the two developed a brotherly relationship. While working with Mavado, Serani found his voice — he'd coach artists while producing their records and found he had a knack for melody.

Although he had no formal experience singing, family and friends pushed him to develop his vocals.

"I was doing that and I was teaching a lot of artists how to sing," he said of his time manning the boards. "I didn't know I could do it, but I knew keys. Eventually, as I'm making the beats, I start coming up with ideas for myself and as the time goes by, the ideas start getting better and better. This is, like, 2007, so I just started doing it. My voice started getting better and I said, 'Let's do it.' "

Now with "No Games" as his first certified solo hit, Serani is prepping for the release of his debut of the same name, due October 27.

Next Wave of Flav

On Mavado: "He's like my son in music. He's older than me, but I feel like he's my son, 'cause I taught him so much in music as a producer. I'm like his son in terms of singing, if you wanna say so. We have a good relationship. I still produce songs with Mavado. He's my brother."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

There's been a lot of talk about 50 Cent lately, with many questioning the motives behind his recent ThisIs50 Music Festival held in New York. Fabolous was one of the first to bring it up on Twitter, asking if the G-Unit General would have reached out to his onetime rivals a few years ago. Who knows, really?

However, Tony Yayo seemed to be enthusiastic about all the crew love that went down on Governor's Island, where G-Unit, the Diplomats and the LOX all connected.

"I know your eyes is buggin' on, like, what's going on — Slaughterhouse, the Unit, D-Block out here, Dipset," the Talk of New York boasted. "My man Young Money Trav — we got Jersey here, L.A., we got a lot of 'hoods. Detroit.

"Talk about that new album, man," Yayo continued, looking in Joe Budden's direction. " 'Cause I picked up that [Slaughterhouse] album. I told [the rest of the group] you should do that 'Microphone' joint [onstage]."

"See, man," Budden cut in.

The New Jersey MC and his counterparts, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5'9" and Crooked I, might have disagreed about their song set for the night's festivities.

Yayo was adamant, however.

"That's crack, man."

Lady Gaga Reveals The Fame: Monster Re-Release Details

Singer is also planning new tour in wake of Fame Kills Tour cancellation.

As she said in recent interviews, the forthcoming re-release of Lady Gaga's debut album, The Fame: Monster, will feature almost an album's worth of new material.

According to a press release sent out by the singer's label, the album, which hits stores on November 24, will include eight new songs, including the lead single, "Bad Romance," the finished version of which was premiered on Tuesday at Alexander McQueen's runway show in Paris, and which Gaga played briefly during her piano medley on "Saturday Night Live" last weekend.

"I wrote about everything I didn't write on The Fame," Gaga said in the release. "While traveling the world for two years, I've encountered several monsters, each represented by a different song on the new record: my 'Fear of Sex Monster,' my 'Fear of Alcohol Monster,' my 'Fear of Love Monster,' my 'Fear of Death Monster,' my 'Fear of Loneliness Monster,' etc." She did not further specify the exact titles of the new songs, except for "Bad Romance" and one called "Speechless."

"Bad Romance" was produced by RedOne, who produced much of The Fame (including "Just Dance" and "Pokerface"), while Gaga worked with Teddy Riley, Rodney Jerkins, Ron Fair and Fernando Garibay on other tracks.

The singer, who spent much of the summer promoting her album, found inspiration while on the road.

"I spent a lot of nights in Eastern Europe, and this album is a pop experimentation with industrial/Goth beats, '90s dance melodies, an obsession with the lyrical genius of '80s melancholic pop and the runway," she said in the release. "I wrote while watching muted fashion shows and I am compelled to say my music was scored for them."

She also noted that "Speechless" is dedicated to her father; judging by her description, it's also one of the songs she briefly played during the medley on "SNL."

"I also composed a ballad for the album, 'Speechless,' a song for my father, and it's my favorite work of all," she said in the release. "I wrote every piece on the road — no songs about money, no songs about fame. I wrote it for my fans, so I wrote everything in between."

Gaga is also planning her forthcoming solo tour, which is being scheduled in the wake of the cancelation last week of her controversial Fame Kills Tour with Kanye West.

Taylor Swift Announces New Leg Of Fearless Tour

'I'm thrilled to play in new cities and see even more of my fans on the 2010 Fearless tour!' says the multi-platinum singer.

Just as Taylor Swift was set to wrap up her Fearless tour on October 11 in Minneapolis, comes word that the singer will hit the road once again for a second leg of the tour starting in February 2010. The new leg will kick off in Australia before coming stateside for a slew of dates, her rep confirmed to MTV News.

Swift will hit 29 cities in the U.S. and Canada after she wraps up five shows in Australia, which will begin on February 4 in Brisbane. Her stateside tour begins in Tampa, Florida, on March 4. Once again Swift will be hitting the road with opening acts Kellie Pickler and Gloriana.

"I'm so excited to take the Fearless tour back out on the road again in 2010!" Swift said in a statement. "This year's tour has been so much fun and even more unforgettable than I ever imagined. The fans have been so amazing, and I'm thrilled to play in new cities and see even more of my fans on the 2010 Fearless tour!"

Shows on the first leg of the Fearless tour — named after her album released last November, which has gone platinum nearly four times — sold out in minutes, and Swift hopes that she'll do the same this time around. She said her fans' response to her tour has been like she "won the lottery of dreams coming true," according to The Associated Press.

"I always expected to have to do a lot of stressing out about selling tickets. And then I went on my first headlining tour, and everything just sold out," she said. "I've never expected that kind of success. I've never just felt entitled to my shows selling out or things like this happening to me, but the fact that they've happened to me has been wonderful."

Although we're sure she's welcoming a bit of a break from months of touring, she does say that seeing this leg of the tour wrap up this week is a bit sad. "It's going to be so sad knowing that we're not going to see each other for a while, everybody on the tour from the lighting to the crew, the dancers and the band, and everybody that have just become even more of my family in the last couple of months," she said.

Here is the schedule for Swift's 2010 leg of the tour. Venues will be announced in the coming weeks.

Eliza Dushku Says A Few Joss Whedon Alumni Will Stop By 'Dollhouse'

'Whoever was right and good and fun, we want to bring them in,' cult show's star says.

If having Faith (Eliza Dushku from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and Fred (Amy Acker from "Angel") on "Dollhouse" isn't enough of a Joss Whedon fix for you, Dushku promises that when fans tune in for the cult show's second season, they will see some more familiar faces.

"So we have ['Firefly' actress] Summer Glau that comes in and has a really twisted arc, and she and [Ashley Johnson's character] Caroline have a past that they kind of duke out," she revealed to MTV News. "And the Rossum Corp. is much bigger than we know. There's the Washington, D.C., branch, which is a pretty stark contrast to our Zen L.A. dollhouse."

Dushku knows that fans would love to see more Whedon-verse alumni stop by as the show progresses, but she said that before they reunite with too many old friends, they need to make sure the show can stand on its own.

"We have so many guest stars this year, and last year, people were asking if we were going to bring people from the Joss Whedon universe to the show, and we felt like we wanted to make it a separate show," she said. "But we were so surprised and sort of all in this year that we decided whoever was right and good and fun, we want to bring them in."

The "Dollhouse" star also talked to MTV News about a possible live-action version of the video game she just worked on. "This video game 'Wet' I just did, she's got a working-class Lara Croft thing going on, and she's pretty kick ass," Dushku said of the game's leading lady, Ruby. "She travels the globe, she's in Hong Kong and she's in the U.K., and she's a gun for hire, and she's got two samurai swords. She's pretty vicious. So that's been something that maybe could turn into a live-action Dushku vehicle."

Miley Cyrus Deletes Her Twitter Account For Liam Hemsworth

Singer says she was pressured by 'Last Song' co-star.

It was the place where she wrote about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sadness and her love of "rainbows, John Lennon, and Franklin, Tennessee." But now it's gone!

On Wednesday, Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter account, a frequently updated and refreshingly frank portal into her daily life that was followed by some 2 million people. Did she do it for love?

In her last Tweet, Cyrus wrote that her reported boyfriend (and co-star in the upcoming film "The Last Song") Liam Hemsworth didn't have a Twitter account, and was encouraging her to get rid of hers. "FYI Liam doesn't have a twttr & he wants ME 2 delete mine w/ gd reason" were her exact words, and shortly thereafter, she pulled the plug. Her @MileyCyrus name disappeared from the site (and so did @MommyTish, the Twitter handle used by her mother). And then, the deluge ...

In the aftermath, Cyrus' fans made their displeasure known, flooding Twitter with pleas for her return with the hashtag "#mileycomeback" (which at press time was still the #1 trending topic on the site) and writing 140-or-less missives like "TWITTER SUCKS WITHOUT MILEY :(" and "please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please #mileycomeback."

Perhaps not coincidentally, in the hours following Cyrus' disappearance, Twitter also ground to a near-halt.

Of course, now that she's left the site, dozens of Twit-izens stepped in to fill the void, creating fake Cyrus handles that all claim to be legit.

At press time, a spokesperson for Cyrus had not responded to MTV News' request for comment on the situation, nor did she verify whether any of the new Cyrus accounts are actually maintained by the singer.

However, Cyrus' sister Brandi and brother Trace were still tweeting at press time.

Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger To Join Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical

Reports have recently surfaced that Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger will be involved in a staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera," and MTV News has confirmed the report that Schzeringer is working with Lloyd Webber on his new play, "Love Never Dies."

Scherzinger's level of involvement with the production is still unknown, and her rep said that no further details are available at this time.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Lloyd Webber made the announcement about the follow-up to the highly successful "Phantom" in a statement. As of now, the show will open at the Adelphi Theatre in London on March 9, and a Broadway opening will follow on November 11, 2010. There are also plans to bring the show to Australia in 2011.

The story will follow the play's heroine Christine as she and the Phantom have run off to Coney Island, New York, 10 years after the end of "Phantom." "There's unfinished business," Lloyd Webber told reporters in London. "I don't regard this as a sequel; it's a stand-alone piece."

Recently, Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton told MTV News that the group is on hiatus, but assured fans it was in no way an official breakup. "Right now the Pussycat Dolls are on a break. It's actually a much-needed break," Thornton said. "It's like when you're with your sisters for 24 hours a day and you need to take your own shower."

While Dr. Dre had hoped to drop his long-awaited Detox album this year, the hip-hop icon recently revealed to ABCNews.com that he's still cooking up the beats.

In an interview to promote his line of Monster headphones, the reporter casually asked Dre what upcoming projects he had. "Only my album that I've been working on for the last 10 years, that's it, Detox record," he laughed.

While he didn't go into any specifics, Dre said, "Hopefully, I'll get it done at the end of this year, and we can hear it next year."

Asked what was causing the holdup of the album that would be his first solo effort since 1999's 2001 album, Dre admitted, "motivation, other things getting in the way." Detox was originally slated for release in 2004 but has been pushed back numerous times as Dre worked on music for affiliated artists including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and the Game, as well as Gwen Stefani and Mary J. Blige.

A snippet of music from the album debuted earlier this year during a commercial for Dr Pepper. Back in August 2008, 50 Cent told MTV News that he'd recorded some material for Detox with Dre and joked that they were so good "I want the records back." At the time, even 50 didn't know when the album might drop, but he was keeping hope alive.

"Hopefully, he'll get it done and put it out," 50 said. "I'm waiting for the Detox. All I can say is, Dr. Dre is the best producer in my eyes. Just the consistency over the years. ... He knows what he wants. He's such a perfectionist that it becomes difficult for him to put it out."

Common Wants To Curb Chicago Youth Violence

In the wake of the tragic death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert, many hip-hop artists have spoken out about violence, not only among the youth of Chicago, but in other cities like Atlanta and Newark. Nas wrote an open letter to Chicago teens following the honor student's senseless beating death, urging them that they were fighting the wrong war.

Killer Mike blogged for XXLmag.com, apologizing to Albert and the four teens charged with his murder, Silvonus Shannon, 19; Eugene Riley, 18; Eugene Bailey, 17; and Eric Carson, 16, for letting them down. David Banner also addressed the situation in his song, appropriately titled, "Something Is Wrong."

MTV News caught up with Common at Wednesday's Hennessy Artistry 2009 Series show in New York, and the legendary Chicago MC echoed their sentiments. "For me, I grew up around it, but I have a great mom, have a wonderful stepfather and great family around, and I know every kid is not provided that blessing which we should naturally have," Common said.

"I look at it now and say it's just some of the choices I was able to make because of what I was exposed to and the opportunities I had. And because I know these kids don't have it, I feel like it's our responsibility to give them the opportunity, to give them the information, to listen to them."

The South Side native said he initially didn't want to see the viral video that captured Albert's beating death because he felt that it was just making people angrier. But eventually, he did watch it, and what he felt was hurt. "Just to know that that young man, and young men and women all over the city been dying all over the country — it's a painful thought."

Common said incidents of young people being murdered are nothing new for the city. But Albert's death has brought the issue back into the national spotlight. According to The New York Times, 34 Chicago students were killed last year and at least 290 were injured in shootings. Common said the solution to the problem lies in showing teens and young children that there's hope out there and their lives have value.

"When you value your life, you will value others' lives too," he said. "You got to really just know that the choices you make will affect the rest of your life."

The world will get its first glimpse of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson's nearly 2-month-old son, David Jr., in an upcoming issue of People magazine. After keeping her pregnancy a virtual secret over the past year, the R&B opens up for the cover story, discussing her joy at being a mom and revealing that the little one is already taking after his dad.

For fans of reality TV, it might be hard to imagine an infant taking after David Otunga, who's built quite an interesting resume in his 29 years.

The singer's fiancé, a Harvard Law graduate, first came to prominence when he appeared as "Punk" on VH1's "I Love New York 2," where he vied for the affections of "Flavor of Love" reject Tiffany "New York" Pollard. After ending up as one of the finalists on the show in early 2008, he signed on with Florida Championship Wrestling — a development league for World Wrestling Entertainment. He made his wrestling debut this May under the name Dawson Alexander Esq. and won his first match. In keeping with his legal background, his signature finishing move is called the "Verdict."

Hudson met the Elgin, Illinois, native in 2008, and the two got engaged six months later on her 27th birthday in September, a month before the murders of her mother, brother and nephew. Otunga has yet to make a statement about the child's birth, but Hudson told People that it was easy to keep the baby a secret because she didn't show until she was seven months pregnant. As for what her hopes are for David Jr., she said the couple will, "definitely encourage education. His father is an education fanatic so we definitely want him to get an education and go to school. ... My mom always said, 'Whatever you want to do, I'll support you as long as you're happy.' So I will do the same."
