Justin Timberlake On Michael Jackson: '99.79 Percent Of His Songs Are Perfect'

JT thinks 'Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' will be 'a more intimate view than anything we've seen.'

When Michael Jackson joined Justin Timberlake and 'NSYNC onstage at the 2001 Video Music Awards, JT didn't get a chance to sing with one of his idols. The King of Pop just busted out a number of his signature dance moves as the crowd at New York's Metropolitan Opera House went nuts. A couple months later, though, Timberlake got the opportunity of a lifetime when he performed — and sung — with MJ at his 30th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden.

Years later, and months after Jackson's passing, Timberlake maintains that Jackson's vocal dexterity might be the biggest legacy he's left behind.

"If there's anything that I think my generation of artists — including myself, obviously — emulate about Michael, it's that he felt what he was doing so much that his vocal presentation of the song, you can tell when he was cutting the record he was probably dancing in the booth," Timberlake told MTV News on the red carpet at his Las Vegas charity concert. "At least that's what it seems like to me. That type of energy, that kinetic energy into the music, I think that's what we all try to emulate. From hip-hop to pop to rock and roll, I think that there's inflection that he put into music as a vocalist that no one had ever really heard that way."

Though Timberlake professed to be a huge fan of Jackson's tunes as a kid, he also admitted that he didn't have a true understanding of Jackson's legacy until he left home to pursue a career as an artist. "Growing up in Tennessee, I never really understood the phenomenon that was Michael Jackson or the pandemonium that followed him around," JT said. "I just heard certain songs that I loved as a kid and I gravitated toward those songs. It just so happens that 99.79 percent of his songs are perfect. They're perfect songs. The other whatever percentage are works of art as well."

One work of art he's interested in checking out is "Michael Jackson's This Is It," the upcoming documentary about the singer's final days. "It looks like a more intimate view than anything we've seen," he said. "I'm sure it will be good."

While he's looking forward to catching MJ on the big screen, Timberlake said he doesn't try to invoke his idol in the recording booth — though he's pleasantly surprised when he finds a point of similarity in their music. "You don't imitate it, but you know when you have something that he had," he explained. "You could tell he was just excited about the music he was doing. That's the feeling that you get sometimes and that's when you feel like the king — but other than that, not so much!"

Spencer Pratt Discusses Holly Montag's Drinking On 'The Hills'

With the new season of "The Hills" under way, there has been no shortage of drama thanks to new girl Kristin Cavallari. But the friends will also face a more serious issue — this season, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are seen talking to Holly Montag about her out-of-control partying.

When Pratt spoke to MTV News about the show, he dropped some of his usual Spencer swagger to talk seriously about Holly's perceived drinking problem and why he and Heidi staged an intervention. "We're praying for her, and she'll get it together," he said. "I mean, I've had problems with drinking in Hollywood, but who doesn't?" Pratt thinks it's easy to get caught up in the party lifestyle and said that when you're having fun, it's hard to realize that there's anything wrong.

"Anybody who ever was in the nightlife scene, you know it's not a problem, but if you're out at a club every night having drinks, then you're drinking every night of the week," he explained. "First, it starts off, 'Oh, I just love this dancing and having fun with friends.' But it's like, even though you're just having a couple of cocktails, [it adds up]."

Pratt didn't want to share too much about the events leading up to the intervention, but he did say that he and Heidi came to a sudden realization that Holly needed help. "It took that moment [to realize we had] to step in here," he said. "Tune in — you'll see it when it clicks, when we're like, 'Yo, it's time to help Holly.' "

He also partially blamed Holly's behavior on one of her friends. "It's as real as it can get, and you know that's what's really going on. [People are] giving you unlimited high-end alcohol, and Holly is from Colorado and probably did not have fun [before], especially when your new BFF is Stacie the bartender."

How will Holly react to Heidi and Spencer's intervention? Tune into "The Hills" on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

The Idoloonies have done it again! Just a week after Kris Allen fans uncovered his album cover art on the Barnes & Noble Web site, a group of die-hard Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta fans found album titles for each of their forthcoming releases posted on Amazon.com.

A rep for 19 Entertainment confirmed to MTV News that Adam Lambert's major label debut is called For Your Entertainment and Allison Iraheta's release is named Just Like You.

Both album names appear to play into each artist's "Idol" persona — Lambert, the ultimate showman and Iraheta, the irresistibly relatable teenage girl. No word yet as to whether their albums will feature songs with those titles.

Iraheta's first single, "Friday I'll Be Over U," leaked online last week and is hitting radio soon. Meanwhile, Lambert told MTV News he was waiting to finish recording before he selected his first single, which should happen sometime this week. In addition, a song he recorded for the movie "2012," called "Time for Miracles," leaked this past weekend, but it is not an album single.

Recently, several Lambert song titles have been confirmed. Producer Rob Cavallo name-checked "Suburban Decay," "Music Again" and "Winners" in an interview with Yahoo! Music, while the current issue of Entertainment Weekly also cites "What Do You Want From Me" (a leftover from Pink's "Funhouse" album, co-written by Max Martin and Pink) and "Loaded Smile," by Adam and Linda Perry. (Rolling Stone reported on a Kara DioGuardi/ Lambert collaboration, "Strut," weeks ago.)

Michael Slezak at EW.com confirmed two Iraheta song titles, separate from her Max Martin-penned single. Fans can expect the Kevin Rudolf-produced "Beat Me Up" and the Iraheta/David Hodges collaboration "You Don't Know Me," which Allison cited as her one of her favorites.

Lambert's For Your Entertainment will drop November 23 and Iraheta's Just Like You will land December 1. Season 8's "Idol" champ, Kris Allen, releases his major-label debut first, on November 17, while Danny Gokey, the only other "Idol" contestant with a record deal, will come out with an album of country-influenced tunes in 2010.

In the days since the cryptic phrase "The Wait is Ova. Nov 23 09" appeared on Rihanna's Twitter account, more details have emerged about what exactly we're waiting on. According to an interview with Rap-Up.com, producer Tricky Stewart confirmed that Rihanna will be releasing her fourth album on that date.

Stewart also said the song he produced could be the album's first single, which would coincide with the equally cryptic countdown clock on Rihanna's site, counting down to October 20 at 11:23 a.m. "We delivered a very, very big record, but I can't say what the name of it is or anything, just for the simple fact that it's actually top secret," Stewart explained. "It's definitely going to be a single. It's either going to be the first or the second single. I do know that."

As the anticipation grows, Ne-Yo recently told MTV News that fans should prepare themselves. "I've heard a good majority of the album ... world, get ready," he said. "That's all I'm going to say: World, get ready."

The R&B star, who worked with Rihanna on her last two albums, also said he had written a few songs for this new effort. But he continued to be evasive when asked about the sound the album.

"The best and safest way I can say this is that Rihanna has some stuff to say and she's going to say it," he continued, "and she ain't going to make no apologies for it."

RZA Wants In On Raekwon, Ghostface, Method Man's Joint Album

Our top section is called "Don't Sleep," and that's a motto that Gucci Mane has lived by for the past two years. In 2009 alone, he's had about 200 of his songs on mixtapes, and none of them were his bells-and-whistles single "Spotlight," which just hit the Net on Monday. The track features Usher and finds Gucc in a zone he knows all too well. No, not his 'hood, ATL Zone 6 — the club. We're gonna give you a synopsis of his three latest street CDs (not including The BurrPrint [The Movie 3-D], which came out last week, or the upcoming Halloween release Fright Night). And right after Gucc, be sure to see how the RZA feels about Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man making a joint album.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape Series: The Cold War (Guccimerica, Great Brrritain and BurrRussia)
Headliner: Gucci Mane
Co-Starring: DJ Drama, DJ Scream and DJ Holiday
Key Collaborations: "The Other Day," featuring Jim Jones (BurrRussia); "Party Animal," featuring Snoop Dogg (BurrRussia); "Euphoria," featuring Waka Flocka and Rocko (BurrRussia); "Street Cred," featuring Drake and Mike Bigga (Guccimerica); "In My Business," featuring Drake and Sean Garrett (Guccimerica); "I'm Expecting," featuring Juvenile (Great Brrritain)
Essential Info: A triple tape? To call that rare is an understatement. Gucci Mane is obviously in overdrive as he gets closer to his December release date of the official album The State vs. Radric Davis. On Saturday (October 17) at exactly 10:17 p.m., the Gucc dropped his Cold War series with Drama, Holiday and Scream. The flamboyant ATL chain-swinger has more than 30 songs on the three mixtapes, with appearances by everyone from Drake to Snoop Dogg. Check out the Guccimeria intro, "#6," where Gucci speaks for the first time about his placement on the Hottest MCs list. He says it's ironic that he came in at #6, and he's also from Zone 6 in Atlanta. With all the music he's been putting out lately, it's obvious Gucci is dead real about trying to move up to the list to #1.

The Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground

"I think it's a great idea," RZA said of Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man teaming up. "I was pushing that idea to them years ago. Back in the day, we was gonna have a branch called 'The Brothers From the Grain' that was kinda those guys right there. I'm gonna see Meth tonight in the studio to see if I could add on something to that project. Add some depth to it. They are three of the most prolific voices in Wu-Tang. Ghost would call it 'Three the Hard Way Doing Their Thing.' "

RZA says the Clan are at a point where everybody is strong individually, which makes it even greater when they combine.

"We're at a period of life, if anybody from Wu-Tang needs me, I'm there for them," he elaborated. "Everybody has grown and matured to where we don't need each other. ... Everybody is now independent, and sometimes we become what I call interdependent. We don't need each other, but it's good to work with each other and use each other's energy for the whole brand and the whole Clan. U-God reached out to me and said, 'I want you to produce my whole album.' I'm like, 'It's all good.' When I worked [on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II] with Raekwon, he was like, 'How much you gonna charge me?' I said, 'It's on the house, baby. Just give me my publishing. My rights. But you don't have to give me no money to work with you, baby.' "

Kelly Rowland, what are you doing tomorrow? Want to get romantic with 50 Cent? Those probably weren't the exact words, but 50 Cent and his people did give singer Kelly Rowland less than two days' notice to be his leading lady in the video for "Baby by Me."

50 ran into the Destiny's Child co-founding member last Thursday, when he was presenting at the Los Premios MTV awards show in Los Angeles, and it occurred to him to snag the lovely songstress for his video, which was set to roll production on Saturday.

"This video is great," 50 said. "Chris Robinson came up with a great treatment for it. It's obvious I wasn't in a hurry to make the music video until I found the right treatment, the right idea, to bring it to life."

50 said he was dead set on having a celebrity, rather than an unknown model, star as the girl he falls in love with in the video.

"I had to find the right person to be my love interest in the music video," 50 added. "I found Kelly. It matches perfectly. The acting in the project is great. I think when people see it, they are gonna be surprised by it.

Ne-Yo, who sings on the hook, shot his part for the video in New York on Saturday, while Fif and Rowland filmed in L.A.

"Because of the technology there is no secret," he continued. "Right after we shot, I went in the trailer and looked on the computer and saw pictures on Twitter. Everybody will get to see it and enjoy it in its entirety when it's done."

Paramore's Tour Continues, Although 'Everyone Is Getting Sick'

Hayley Williams is on vocal rest and Taylor York recently fell ill, but the Brand New Eyes tour soldiers on.

One week into the (re)launch of their Brand New Eyes tour, Paramore are trying their best to stay healthy ... and stay on the road. And both goals are proving to be more challenging than they ever imagined.

Late last week — just days after frontwoman Hayley Williams returned to the stage after a lengthy bout with laryngitis — guitarist Taylor York fell ill while the band was in Philadelphia. Williams began tweeting that she was "seriously considering buying a gas mask" because it seemed "like everyone is getting sick."

Naturally, fans began to worry. Was Paramore's tour about to be postponed once again? Did everyone in the band need to be quarantined? And, most importantly, was their BNE jaunt cursed?!?

Well, according to Williams, the answer to all those questions is a resounding "No."

"[The rumors] are not true, unless someone ain't telling me something!" she wrote MTV News in an e-mail — she's still on strict vocal rest — Monday morning (October 19). "Taylor had a cough and a couple of other dudes on tour weren't feelin' good the other day."

So, there you have it: Paramore are soldiering on. No postponing dates, no self-imposed quarantine and most definitely no curse. On the other hand, Williams is trying her best not to speak until she takes the stage each night, something she's managed to accomplish with a pair of props, one decidedly old-school, the other rather cutting-edge.

"I finally bought a dry-erase board so I can effectively communicate with folks," she explained. "Even downloaded a text-to-speech app on my phone, though it's a lot more fun to type profanities on that thing than actually hold a conversation using it. But, hey, at least I can sing!"

Gucci Mane's mingling with mainstream heavyweights is finally being channeled into his own projects. After appearing on records with the likes of Mariah Carey, the Black Eyed Peas and Mario over the past few months, Gucci — who was votest the #6 Hottest MC in the Game by MTV News recently — has corralled a marquee name to help kick off his own anticipated album: Usher appears on Mane's new single, "Spotlight." The song is from Gucci's The State vs. Radric Davis LP, which is slated for release in December.

"The spotlight ain't nothing without you girl," Usher sings over Polow Da Don's ATL-bounce beat. "And the dance floor ain't nothing without you, girl/ You a show-stopper/ Let's get it poppin'."

Gucci comes in with laid-back rhymes about his lifestyle.

"Slow-dancing in my mansion with no panties, wanna get there/ Three girls Gucci trippin'/ That's a lot of women," Mane spits. "Expensive denim jeans on ... I don't want no violence, but damn she trying to kill me/ She trying to make me feel her/ I'm trying to make her feel me."

Gucci and Usher shot a video for the song over the weekend in Atlanta. The clip was directed by Benny Boom and according to Gucci's camp, it's heavy on performance and club scenes. Young Money princess Nicki Minaj makes a cameo in the clip, and Gucc's leading lady comes straight from the bloodline of one of the most successful actors in Hollywood history: Bria Murphy, daughter of Eddie, is the woman who makes Gucci goes crazy in this one.

Gucci has been especially relentless when it comes to releasing music lately: Over the weekend, he put out three mixtapes dubbed the Cold War series in conjunction with DJs Drama, Scream and Holiday. And weekend before last, Gucci and Drama dropped The Burrprint (The Movie 3-D) mixtape.

Sunday was a big day for impatient Adam Lambert fans, who got their first taste of post-"Idol" Lambert music thanks to a leak of "Time for Miracles," the highly anticipated soundtrack song from the upcoming disaster flick "2012." The track was released in Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, and it didn't take long for the song to get uploaded to streaming video sites for all the world to hear. Lambert's record label, 19 Recordings/RCA Records, tried its best to take down the illegal streams as they went up, but a few still lingered at press time.

The Rob Cavallo-produced song has the "Idol" rocker heartbroken over a lost love and wishing for a miraculous reunion, all the while showcasing the powerful high timbre of Lambert's voice. The octave-and-a-half range stretches from the A below middle-C to a throat-killing E5, which may explain his recent comments to MTV News about the song's intense recording session. "[Rob] pushed me to the limit. I sang for my life," Lambert said.

The Brian May-approved power ballad was composed by Alain Johannes and the late Natasha Shneider, who succumbed to cancer on July 2, 2008. (Alain and Natasha performed together in the '90s rock outfit Eleven.) Johannes, a producer, engineer and guitarist in his own right, has also worked with Kelly Clarkson, Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age and Hilary Duff in various capacities.

Lambert and his record label have maintained that the classic-rock sound of "Time for Miracles" doesn't represent the musical direction of Lambert's major-label debut, which the rocker described to MTV News as a "space-pop-rock-glam-alien invasion." But there's no official word yet as to whether "Time for Miracles" will appear on Adam Lambert's CD, which is now set to hit stores November 23 (a day earlier than originally announced).

As far as an official U.S. release date for "Time for Miracles" goes, details are still fuzzy. Lambert and Cavallo told various media outlets that it would hit the U.S. this past Sunday, but at press time it was still unavailable Stateside. (Amazon.com confusingly lists an "original release date" as October 16 and an "available" date as October 27.)

Starting October 28, fans can check out the "Time for Miracles" music video on the big screen when a special extended "2012"/ "Time for Miracles" trailer runs before the Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It."

At press time, reps from 19 Entertainment had not responded to MTV News' inquiries about the release date.

Rihanna has been in the studio lately crafting her forthcoming album, working with everyone from Tricky Stewart, All-American Reject Tyson Ritter, Norwegian production team Stargate and Justin Timberlake. With fans eager for the new release, we got a few more details on what to expect from the tunes.

Timberlake spoke to MTV News Saturday at the second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert in Las Vegas, and told us his new songs with Rihanna are not just a rehash of what fans heard on Good Girl Gone Bad, but instead a whole new sound for the singer.

"I think she's got, like, a million people writing songs for her, but the ones that we worked on she's grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say," he explained. "So that's what we tried to do — craft things that are that of a young woman."

Timberlake added that because of the huge success of her last album, Rihanna wants to make sure she isn't pigeonholed into one sound or vibe. "She broke onto the scene so hard with the last record — to have that many songs on the charts is impressive," he said. "I think that the smartest thing she's doing is not trying to emulate what she did but move forward ... I've heard some of the stuff on the record and it's awesome."

In related Rihanna news, a rep for the singer confirmed that she shot her new video over the weekend in New York City, but declined to elaborate on concept details, title or producers for the record.
