The feedback on our 2009 Hottest MCs in the Game list has been tremendous since we started to reveal our picks last Monday. We started off with Raekwon the Chef at #10, and Jay-Z finished the list as the #1 Hottest MC right now.

On Monday night, MTV News received an e-mail about the list from New York Governor David A. Paterson, who applauded Jigga's crowning.

"Jay-Z is not only an outstanding hip-hop artist, but a dedicated philanthropist as well," Paterson said in a statement. "Having just attended his September 11th benefit concert in Madison Square Garden a few weeks ago, I can personally attest to his commitment to New York and the impact he has on New Yorkers of all ages. He is most definitely deserving of the top MC of 2009 title."

A few weeks ago, before the Hottest list came out, Paterson gave his personal criteria for what he thought made a hot MC.

"I think these days, since hip-hop is now nearly 30 years old, that it's the creativity," he said. "There are too many people who think you become successful by mimicking what others have done, and I think every performer starts out with a favorite, but it's those people who blaze new trails that I think are the MCs of the future.

"I also think that the MC that figures out that people 18 and older who got the right to vote in 1972 never exercised it till 2008 — there's a real culture for discussing how our government works and how our society works," he added. "The MC who could blaze that trail and find a creative way of displaying it will be the MC of the next decade."

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

50 Cent and Jim Jones said they used the good old 'hood barter system when it came to the Diplomat Capo performing at Saturday's ThisIs50 Music Festival on Governors Island in New York.

"The craziest thing with Jim, I just said Jimmy is gonna be there [in advertisements for the show]," 50 said. "Then he squeezed me. [Laughs.]"

"I said, 'I need something for that,' " Jones added with a grin. "Word up, I said a favor for a favor, we gonna do this old-school. How we feeling?"

Juelz Santana was onboard too. "It's a couple of mutual friends. I said, 'Let's do it. Why not?' " Santana said.

"We got the official 007, 'Mission Impossible' concert of the year," Jones said. "Plane to the train to the automobiles."

Almost, Jim. To get to the show, you had to drive to the pier and take a ferry to Governors Island. Besides the Dips, D-Block, Uncle Murda, Cory Gunz, Red Cafe, Wyclef Jean, Maino, Slaughterhouse, Papoose, Kid Cudi and Wale performed.

"Everybody is definitely enjoying themselves," 50 said. "This is a great example of us being together and having a successful concert without anything happening. Just like '40 Day/ Forever Young.' We got everybody coming through here. Everybody is gonna be out here tonight."

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Independent Album: First Impressions

Headliner: Really Doe

Key Collaborations: "Plastic" (featuring Kanye West) and "Fabrics" (featuring GLC and Malik Yusef)

Essential Info: "First Impressions is my first look to the world. It's my baby," Chicago native Really Doe said about his independent debut. "It's how people will judge me. Nowadays, people only give you one chance, so here it is — all of me!"

Doe has been wicked with the raps for years. Our first real dose of his bars came on Kanye West's Late Registration LP alongside 'Ye and Nas for "We Major." Signed to West's G.O.O.D. Music label, Doe said working with the Louis Vuitton Don is natural.

" 'Ye is my n---a, has been for over 15 years," he said. "So anytime I can make music with my fam, it's always fun. He has given me the opportunity to learn about biz."

Kanye appears on "Plastic," while Doe said another favorite of his from the tape is "Checkin' In." "In entertainment, we're always on the road, so I wanted to create something that my people on the go can relate to," he said.

First Impressions is out now.

Once everyone heard Kristin Cavallari was set to make her way back to reality TV via "The Hills" and would be making a play for Audrina Patridge's ex, Justin Bobby, they knew there would be tons of drama to be had. Even Cavallari herself alluded to her bad-girl nature in interviews.

But the "Hills" newcomer is over the whole Audrina/Justin love triangle. She's moved on — even if she thinks Audrina hasn't.

"I'm over it. I never had an issue with her," she told MTV News. "I think she's the one that has an issue with me, so I'm cool. I'm over it."

Judging by the first episode of the show, it seems that many of Kristin's "Hills" co-stars aren't liking the drama she's bringing to the table. But that doesn't mean Kristin thinks anyone has a problem with her. "Audrina's the only one I have an issue with," she said. "And we honestly haven't seen each other since one of the first days of shooting. So who knows if we ran into each other [what would happen]?"

Plus, it seems that these days, Kristin has found herself some new drama. This time, it may or may not involve former flame Brody Jenner. "Wait till you see [the drama] coming up. Even I'm like, 'Damn,' " she teased. "Oh! I can't tell you [about the Brody romance rumors]. Possibly."

Last week, Jenner was also keeping mum about any supposed hookups. "I can't say these things!" he said. "Let's just say Kristin and I have a great relationship. I'm just going to keep it at that."

What other drama will Kristin stir up? Tune in to "The Hills" every Monday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

DJ AM's 'Gone Too Far' Addiction Series To Air On MTV

Late DJ tries to help others overcome addiction in documentary series, premiering October 12.
By MTV News Staff

DJ AM knew all too well about the daily struggle of drug addiction. The late celebrity spinner (born Adam Goldstein), who died of an accidental drug overdose in August at age 36, spent his last few months filming an MTV series called "Gone Too Far," in which he spoke candidly about his own addiction, his 11 years of sobriety and his desire to help other young addicts overcome their demons.

Now, with the consent and support of AM's family, MTV will begin airing the eight-episode documentary series on Monday, October 12. The one-hour show will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT and chronicle the lives of young addicts, ages 20-25, who are offered a chance at recovery.

Each episode features AM meeting with the addicts, their friends and families to discuss their willingness to change. The show was part of AM's long struggle to overcome substance abuse, and it follows his mission to help as many people as he could, using interviews and self-shot video from the addicts and their friends and families that expose the severity of their addiction and its devastating impact on their lives.

"After careful consideration we have decided to air the show," Goldstein's family said in a statement. "Adam felt strongly that by doing this series, he could help other addicts who were at a crisis point to get sober. Adam was fully aware that if it were not for his own sobriety, he never would have achieved the level of success and happiness he had found. Helping people in their recovery was a huge part of Adam's life. It is our hope through airing this show that people will get to see the side of Adam that we knew and loved, not just the celebrity DJ, but the honest and caring person who gave so much of himself to help others. The decision to air the show has been difficult, but we do this with the profound belief that it will inspire others to seek help."

During the course of filming segments for the show, AM often uncovered new information about the addicts that even those close to them were unaware of. He made time to check in during the course of their rehabilitation and provide a raw and honest look at their new sobriety.

"Recovery can be extremely difficult and requires constant attention," said Sean Clarkin, executive vice president of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. "But it's important to know that it is in fact possible to present examples of people who are recognizing the need for treatment and beginning that journey."

Heidi And Spencer's Friends (And Frienemies) Weigh In On Baby Plans

The 'Hills' couple are at odds over starting a family, so their co-stars offer some words of advice.

Although Spencer Pratt has made it quite clear he has no plans to start a family with new wife Heidi Montag anytime soon, that doesn't mean she isn't still harping on the issue on the new season of "The Hills." Now, the couple's friends (and frienemies) are weighing in on whether they think the duo are ready to rock the cradle of love.

"Is that legal?" Heidi's former bestie, Lauren Conrad, quipped about the pair procreating.

As for LC's roommate, "Hills" star Lo Bosworth, she also wasn't sure if Speidi are ready for that responsibility. "Congratulations?" she said, with a shrug.

"The City" star Whitney Port is always one to put a positive spin on something, but even she wasn't sure about them starting a family. "I think eventually, probably it's a great idea," she said. "I think they're a little young right now. I think they should enjoy being married and newlyweds."

Kristin Cavallari, who introduced the couple, also thinks they should wait a bit. "I think those two are hilarious," she said. "If Heidi really wants a baby, then good for her. I don't know their relationship. ... If that's what they want, then I'm all for them!"

Spencer's sister, Stephanie Pratt, and former BFF Brody Jenner have expressed their concerns about Heidi's desire to start a family. "I think they're going to do whatever they want to do, regardless of what I think, but I mean, a baby already? Everybody's just moving pretty fast," Jenner told MTV News. " A little Heidi and Spencer would be great. I think they'd be great parents."

Stephanie, however, was a little less supportive. "Heidi is the one with the baby fever; Spencer is not," she said. "She's like, 'I still want to get a house with a white-picket fence ... and then probably a dog, and then we'll move on to kids.' I keep telling her, 'You don't have to get a dog [either].' A dog is a kid. They're just too busy."

How will the Speidi baby drama turn out? Tune in to "The Hills" on Monday night at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Selena Gomez and her band the Scene dropped their debut album, Kiss & Tell, last week. And just like the title suggests, the album delves into personal territory — but that doesn't mean Gomez can take credit for all the songwriting.

"I don't think I have to write every song to have it be personal," the Disney princess told MTV News. "The entire record, I can relate to each and every one of the songs, because I probably went through 110 songs to have on the record."

Even though Gomez didn't pen all the songs, fans can rest assured that each tune has her seal of approval. "I wanted to make sure, A) I can relate to it, and B) My fans can relate to it and it's something that I went through," she explained. "And all of those songs are things that I went through, and that's why I put that all together."

The album, which she has been working on for some time with writers like Fefe Dobson and Toby Gad, includes the first single "Falling Down." Gomez still can't believe her debut LP is finally out.

"I went to Target the other day, and I saw my face on a CD, and that was the weirdest thing to me. I am so happy," she said. "I have been working on it for a good two years now, so for it to finally be out is this huge thing lifted off my chest, and it feels amazing. I hope my fans like it."

NEW YORK50 Cent looks part demon, part battle-scarred Terminator on the cover of his upcoming LP Before I Self Destruct. The artwork shows a close-up of 50's face with the skin burning off, and underneath, there's a fiery skull.

"The album cover, I sat there and thought about it," Fif explained Saturday during his ThisIs50 Music Festival on Governors Island. "I wanted to do something that was completely different than I've ever done. The Curtis album, I was pretty close in the camera when I done it. I felt it was intimate. This project is even more [intimate], but it's harder. I didn't sugarcoat things. My imperfections are visible on there. I'm in a secure enough space. ... It's a huge gape in hip-hop. There ain't no middle ground. You're either here or you're there. To create the middle ground, the guys that have been up here gotta come down and bring everybody to the forefront where they seen. That's what this is actually about."

The ThisIs50 Music Festival featured performances by the G-Unit, Cory Gunz, Papoose, Uncle Murda, Maino, the Diplomats, D-Block, Slaughterhouse and Wyclef Jean. As 50 explained, the show didn't just promote his Web site, ThisIs50.com, but it also promoted unity. Many of the performers on the bill had at one time feuded with the G-Unit and have obviously since mended fences.

Before I Self Destruct comes out November 17; the current single is "Baby by Me," featuring Ne-Yo

Diddy Agrees With Jay-Z, Lil Wayne Topping Hottest MCs List

'They have carried on the tradition of great MCs,' music mogul says of the Carters.
By Shaheem Reid

Diddy said it had to be Jay-Z or Lil Wayne. Last week, before the final rankings of MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game list were announced, the Mogul agreed that a Carter should be in the #1 spot.

"I think battling it out for first place is Jay-Z and Lil Wayne," Diddy told us of the Hottest list, which had Jay at #1 and Wayne at #2. "I'm gonna leave that up to the fans to decide. They definitely have taken the torch of Rakim, LL [Cool J], KRS-One, Biggie, Tupac. They have carried on the tradition of great MCs. When I was in [Madison Square] Garden the other day looking at the Jay-Z concert, I almost wanted to cry. I was looking at my brother. I was just looking at how he worked hard to get to this point. It was a moving moment, me being his friend and just a fan of his, to see how far Jay has come. Same thing with Wayne — knowing where he comes from and seeing him put Young Money together."

Diddy said Weezy and his crew of new talent reminds him of when Bad Boy took over the game in the '90s.

"I nod my head to Wayne, I tip my hat to him," Diddy said. "I told him at the BET Awards. I said, 'You doing the new generation of Bad Boy. You're doing what we did back in '94. That's really creating a movement.' I tip my hat to him, but now I gotta watch him because he's competition. But he's doing his thing. He's gone from artist to label mogul, so you have to give him his respect."

Jay-Z came in at #1, while Wayne took home the runner-up position — his third consecutive Hottest MC finish — and Drake rounded out the top three.

T.I. Reflects On Career From Jail In 'Hell Of A Life' Video

Clip includes performance highlights but begins and ends with rapper in prison.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Even behind bars, T.I. is living a "Hell of a Life."

The incarcerated rapper's latest video premiered on Monday (October 5) and continues the prison theme set forth by his last video, "Remember Me," featuring Mary J. Blige. That video, which was to be the first single from the proposed Paper Trail reissue that was later shelved, was released just after Tip began his sentence and opened with the Atlanta rapper in an orange jail-issued jumpsuit.

"Hell of a Life" is similar, with Tip donning his prison duds early in the clip. But while "Remember Me" struck a more somber tone, "Hell of a Life" is celebratory. After the rapper enters prison, the Erik White-directed video flashes back 24 hours. Tip is shown all alone in a bedroom-like setting watching his career highlights on a flat-screen TV.

"Beamers, Bentleys, double Rs, Ferraris/ Every time I seen shorty, 'Where you headed tonight?'/ Selling out arenas, chicks with asses like Serena/ Man, shorty live a hell of a life, I'm tryna tell them," T.I. raps on the track's chorus.

The video is interwoven with performance clips as T.I. travels from the isolated bedroom to cruising around town in a Rolls Royce filled with bikini-clad women. A club scene ensues before Tip's time is up, and he finds himself beginning his prison sentence. There's a shot of a calendar with a red X across one of its days, and then the video ends with "To be continued."

Perhaps it's a nod to Tip's next album. The rapper revealed prior to beginning his real jail stint that his follow-up to Paper Trail will be dedicated to life after his trial. The rapper was sentenced to one year and one day in prison after illegally attempting to purchase firearms in Atlanta.

"The celebration, putting these things behind me and moving forward," Tip told MTV News in April about the direction of his next album, scheduled for a 2010 release. "Showcasing a new resilience, you know? Laughing in these suckers' faces. I'm going to get back to some of the old elements that put me on people's minds."
