Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Independent Album: Soft White

Headliner: Mack 10

Key Collaborations: "It's Your Life" (featuring Anthony Hamilton), "Clack Clack" (featuring Akon and Red Cafe), "Hood Famous" (featuring J. Holiday) and "So Sharp" (featuring Rick Ross and Jazze Pha)

Essential Info: Mack 10 tried to tell y'all about 15 years ago that independence was the key to success. He's sold gold and platinum albums on his own and has been able to accumulate a lot more funds than artists on majors who may have sold that much or more.

"With me, it was never about selling 5 million records," Mack said with a grin. "I kept the business side of it upfront, 'cause it's the music business. I always took the route that made the most sense when it came to business. I never understood how being on the majors made sense. It never made sense to me. It seems all you can get is famous. Famous never paid no mortgage."

Mack's latest, Soft White, comes out next week, September 29.

"Soft White, if you from the streets, you know what it is: raw and uncut," he said. "It's me being me. I wasn't pulling no punches on this one. I was swagging all the way out. This one had to be Soft White."

The album's first single is "So Sharp" with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. The three shot a video in Malibu.

" 'So Sharp' is really Mack being Mack," he explained. "It was a fun song. I wanted to try and do something outside of what you was expecting. I wanted to have fun on this one, 'cause I feel that's where it's at now. It's 2009. You can't be 1996 tough no more. You gotta have some fun. We was just having fun. I called on the lil' homie Wayne and Ross. They came down. Jim Jones was on the original, but when it was time to shoot the video, he was overseas. It's all love. That's my homie too. So I shot the [video] with Ross on it, and the rest is history."

The Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground

DJ Whoo Kid is lurking. The spinner said he's been sticking around the studio lately, and he's heard some of the newer material from Mr. Marshall Mathers. The G-Unit member said Eminem is only going to come crazier on his next album.

"The comeback is crazy," Whoo Kid said about Em's return in May with Relapse. "What I really laughed at was the Mariah Carey [dis record]. That was funny. But that's nothing compared to Relapse 2. What I heard, that's just 2 percent [of the intensity]. Eminem from back in the day has returned. The crazy, lyrical, maniacal Eminem is back. Maniac!"

Whoo Kid said the difference between Relapse and Relapse 2 is the level of insanity.

"He was maniacal, but that was like, 'Let me come back now. Let me get my sh-- situated. Who I gotta go at? Let me see what's going on. Let me get comfortable.' Now that he's comfortable, now he's gonna be like [a monster] in Relapse 2. Good luck, people."

Whoo Kid also had Lloyd Banks on his radio show this past weekend, and the Punch Line King told him to expect a double mixtape dropping soon.

'New Moon' Soundtrack Lineup Announced: Killers, Thom Yorke, More

On Monday morning (September 21), MTV News reported that "Twilight" fave band Muse would be contributing a remixed version of the song "I Belong to You," from their new album, The Resistance, for the upcoming "New Moon" soundtrack. Just hours later, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer released the album's full track list on her Web site.

The soundtrack will include 15 songs, most from artists new to this vampire universe. Paramore, who contributed two songs to the film's first soundtrack, will not appear this time around. Thom Yorke of Radiohead, who had a song in the "Twilight" movie but not on the soundtrack, will have one song on the new disc. And while star Robert Pattinson recorded a song for "Twilight," he does not have a song on the "New Moon" album. All the music is original and exclusive to the "New Moon" soundtrack, which was not the case with the first album.

While Grizzly Bear are the only band to appear on the soundtrack from a list of artists Meyer recently blogged that she's been listening to, the album certainly seems in line with her tastes.

Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" — premiered exclusively on MTV.com over VMA weekend — leads off the soundtrack, and is followed by Band of Skulls ("Friends"), Thom Yorke ("Hearing Damage"), Lykke Li ("Possibility"), the Killers ("A White Demon Love Song"), Anya Marina ("Satellite Heart"), Muse ("I Belong to You [New Moon]"), Bon Iver with St. Vincent ("Rosyln"), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ("Done All Wrong"), Hurricane Bells ("Monsters"), Sea Wolf ("The Violet Hour"), OK Go ("Shooting the Moon"), Grizzly Bear ("Slow Life"), Editors "No Sound but the Wind" and Alexandre Desplat ("New Moon [The Meadow]").

The soundtrack will be available on October 20 on Atlantic Records, exactly one month before "New Moon" opens in theaters on November 20.

Spencer Pratt: 'I Already Set My TiVo' For 'The Hills'

'I am so ecstatic,' he says of the new episodes featuring Kristin Cavallari, set to begin on September 29.

Spencer Pratt cannot wait until September 29 for the debut of new episodes of "The Hills" — turns out he is eagerly anticipating the return of Kristin Cavallari to the world of reality TV. She's what he describes as "one of the most entertaining people to be put behind a camera lens."

"I am so ecstatic. Everyone knows she just outshines," he said recently of Cavallari. "I'm more of a team player than people. Everybody else likes to be self-center players. I like when there's a team — it makes me want to watch it. I already set my TiVo."

And what's with the cowboy hat Pratt is sporting recently? It seems wife Heidi's dad Cowboy Bill is to blame. "Well, it was because my new father-in-law gave it to me, and he gave it to me with such a serious speech connected to it [about] how much it truly meant to him and his life and everything," Pratt explained. "He even kind of hinted at how cool it would be to see it on the show for all his cowboy friends back in Colorado."

Pratt even got serious for a moment, saying, "For me it wasn't really more a fashion statement — it was more something for my father-in-law."

Spencer was careful when it came to commenting on Heidi's baby fever though. "It's just mind-boggling to me. I don't even like to give it air," he explained. "Everything I say I talk into reality, so I'm not trying to talk this into reality."

Tune in to MTV on Tuesday, September 29, at 10 p.m. ET for the "Hills" premiere!

Justin Timberlake Talks About Rihanna's New LP: 'It's A Little More Grown-Up'

Between guesting on Jay-Z's "Run This Town," appearing in Kanye West's "Paranoid" video and being photographed while out on the town, Rihanna has certainly been in the headlines recently. And as she continues work on her next LP, some of her collaborators have been talking about their work with her — most recently, Justin Timberlake and British producers Chase & Status.

"The stuff we've come up with in the studio, it's the next step for her. It's a little more grown-up. It's got some edge to it," Timberlake said in an interview during E!'s red-carpet show prior to Sunday's Emmy Awards. The two previously collaborated on "Rehab," from Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad LP.

The songstress has also enlisted U.K. dance producers Chase & Status, who talked about her professionalism and sense of direction with the BBC. "On one track she came up with some cool melodies and cool ideas, the kind of vibe she wanted. This album for her is just about what she likes and what she's into and what she wants," said Saul Milton, a.k.a. Chase.

The duo have spent "two sessions, three or four weeks in total" working with the singer, and Milton noted that Rihanna is very direct about what she likes — and what she doesn't.

"When she doesn't like something she'll let you know. When she likes something she'll let you know as well," Milton said. "If she's not into the vibe she'll be like, 'Nope, I don't think it's for me.' Or if something is a bit too bolshie [esoteric], she's like, 'That's not what I'm trying to push right now.'

"We just spent a lot of time with the writers and with her and she's just a really cool girl, down to earth."

Milton also recalled how he found out that Rihanna was interested in working with the duo.

"I actually got a call from Rihanna at 6 a.m. one day, before we even met up, saying how she loves the tracks and that she can't wait to work with us," he said, adding, "That was a big realization that it's happening!"

At press time, a spokesperson for Rihanna had not responded to MTV News' requests for confirmation and more information.

All-American Reject Tyson Ritter and Norwegian production team Stargate have also spoken about the songs they've worked on with Rihanna in recent months.

Kris Allen Talks About His New Single, 'Live Like We're Dying'

'American Idol' champ says he 'just fell in love' with the song, originally recorded by the Script.

NEW YORK — "American Idol" winner Kris Allen had a morning of firsts. He not only had the world premiere of his new single, "Live Like We're Dying," at New York radio station Z100, but it was also the first time he'd ever heard one of his songs on the radio.

"It was really cool. You dream of this day, you dream of having a single out and having it on the radio, so this was a cool day," he told radio DJ Elvis Duran and the Z100 morning-show team.

The strummy, sing-songy tune had apparently been earmarked as a single for Kris since he began working on his post-"Idol" album back in May. Allen told MTV News, "[The song] was actually one that we had listened to really early on, and we kind of just fell in love with it. Everyone did."

A cover of a barely released track by Irish pop rockers the Script, "Live Like We're Dying" joins the tradition of "life wisdom" songs that urge the listener to live each moment as if it were their last. Think of it as a less schmaltzy version of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" or a more dude-friendly twist on Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten." Incidentally, Bedingfield's smash was co-written and produced by the same duo who worked with Allen on this track: Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner. Two of the Script members are also credited as co-writers.

The positive message is merely one reason Allen was drawn to the song. Responding to one specific lyric, "So if your life flashed before you / What would you wish you would have done?," Kris admitted that if he were suddenly on his way out, there's a big regret in his life. "I wish I would have skydived. It's random, but I have always wanted to," Allen said. "I'm really scared to, but I think that it would be the biggest rush."

While album details are still hard to come by from the tight-lipped "Idol" champ, Allen admitted that "Live Like We're Dying" is just one of many songs on his still-in-the-works CD with producers Frampton and Kipner. "We got a couple different producers on the album, but there's a couple songs that [Frampton and Kipner have produced]. And I'm actually going to London to work with them again."

Should Allen score any free time in England, the Beatles fanatic hopes to hit up Abbey Road to take in some mop-top history. "I hope I get the time. I will totally [take a pic of me crossing Abbey Road]."

Kris Allen's still-untitled major-label debut will be available everywhere November 17. "Live Like We're Dying" will hit iTunes on September 29.

'New Moon' Soundtrack: A Quick Guide To Its Lesser-Known Artists

Anyone who knows anything about "Twilight" scribe Stephenie Meyer knows that the vampire-spawning writer has eclectic taste in music. Earlier this year, she blogged about what she did all summer, which included listening to bands you may or may not know like Meese and White Rabbits, as well as some you might, like Muse, Animal Collective and Silversun Pickups.

She's posted suggested playlists for fans of her book series that includes everything from Placebo, Blue October and Armor for Sleep to Elbow, Coldplay, Patrick Wolf, Simon and Garfunkel, Korn, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails and Right Said Fred.

On Monday, the track listing for the upcoming soundtrack to "New Moon" was revealed and it has the same mix of the popular and somewhat-obscure that fans have come to expect from Meyer. The 15 all-new or exclusive tracks feature some of the names that have been kicking around for a while, such as Muse, who refashioned the baroque "I Belong To You" from their new album, The Resistance at director Chris Weitz's behest and Death Cab for Cutie, whose "Meet Me On The Equinox" debuted on MTV.com recently.

Other big names include the Killers ("A White Demon Love Song"), Radiohead's Thom Yorke ("Hearing Damage") and viral video sensations OK Go ("Shooting the Moon"). But there are also a number of acts whose names you might not recognize, so here's a quick primer:

Band of Skulls ("Friends"): This White Stripes-by-way-of-Radiohead English trio formed in 2008 and released the blues-rocking Baby Darling Doll Face Honey in March. They played at this summer's Lollapalooza festival and feature the alternating vocals of bassist Emma Richardson and guitarist Russell Mardsen.

Lykke Li ("Possibility"): Another veteran of Lollapalooza 2009, the Swedish answer to Lady Gaga has gained a legion of fans (among them MTV's own Kurt Loder) for the intensely rhythmic and hypnotic dance music on her debut, Youth Novels.

Anya Marina ("Satellite Heart"): The San Diego-based singer/songwriter, sometime actress ("100 Girls") and radio DJ released her second album of playfully sexy pop tunes, Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II in January. Her songs have been featured "The Real World," "Gossip Girl," "Grey's Anatomy" and "How I Met Your Mother."

Bon Iver & St. Vincent ("Rosyln"): He's sensitive folkie Justin Vernon, whose For Emma, Forever Ago was recorded under the name Bon Iver in a remote cabin in Wisconsin in 2007 and became a blog sensation in 2008. She's Annie Clark, a member of the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band who performs as the St. Vincent. Her second album, Actor, was released in May and featured orchestrated pop songs she said were potential fodder for film scores.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ("Done All Wrong"): This L.A.-based psychedelic garage rock act — named after Marlon Brando's motorcycle gang in 1953's "The Wild One" — have been thrashing around since 1998 and have released five albums of twisty, heady rock.

Hurricane Bells ("Monsters"): A side project from Longwave singer/guitarist Steve Schiltz, this unsigned band will release its debut next year. The mellow, country-tinged songs on the Bells' MySpace page promise some seriously introspective, rainy-day pop gems.

Sea Wolf ("The Violet Hour"): The now-main project from former Irving member Alex Church, this California act got its start when Church's tunes didn't fit into Irving's more 1960s inspired psychedelic pop sound. As a result, Church broke off and pursued an Americana-inspired orchestral country-pop sound on albums such as this year's White Water, White Bloom.

Grizzly Bear ("Slow Life"): The beloved Brooklyn indie-rock band known for mixing folk with electronic instruments released one of this year's most acclaimed albums in May, Veckatimest. Their mix of acoustic guitars, chamber pop, electronic bloops and gorgeous melodies have earned them major blog props.

Editors ("No Sound But the Wind"): England's Editors emerged out of the dark rock sound of bands like Interpol and their inspiration, Joy Division, earning a string of overseas hits with alluring tunes like "Bullets" and "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors."

Alexandre Desplat ("New Moon (The Meadow)"): The French composer has scored more than 100 films and TV shows since 1985. He's best known for his Golden Globe-nominated score to "Girl with a Pearl Earring," as well as contemplative soundtracks to "Hostage," "Syriana," "The Painted Veil" and "The Queen," which earned his first Oscar nomination.

The "New Moon" soundtrack is available on October 20 on Atlantic Records, exactly one month before "New Moon" opens in theaters on November 20.

Juanes' Peace Without Borders Concert Draws Crowd In Havana

The Obama administration has been hinting at a possible thaw in the half-century standoff with Cuba, and on Sunday, Colombian pop star Juanes did his best to further the cause by headlining a massive concert for peace in Havana's famed Plaza de la Revolución.

Playing in front of several hundred thousand fans at the Peace Without Borders concert, Juanes bucked the authoritarian regime led by the Castro brothers by chanting, "Cuba libre! Cuba libre!" ("Free Cuba!") before segueing into a call for "One Cuban family! One Cuban family!" He was appealing to the many Cuban exiles who, according to The Miami Herald, had criticized the show because they feared it would appear to lend support to the authoritarian communist Castro regime. In an ominous and telling sign, a gigantic image of communist icon Che Guevara towered over the plaza where the concert was held, which has been the site of many long-winded political speeches from former leader Fidel Castro over the past 50 years.

The crowd was reportedly filled mostly with young Cubans, many of whom had arrived early in the morning to get prime spots near the stage. "I can't believe it. This is the most beautiful dream of peace and love,'' Juanes said while taking the stage to chants of his name. "Whatever differences we have, at the end we are all brothers," he added, segueing into his hit plea for peace, "A Dios le Pido" ("I'll Ask God").

Telling the young crowd "the future is in your hands," Juanes played his anthem of hope, "No Creo en el Jamas" ("I Don't Believe in Never"), and a rock song about a kidnap victim called "Sueños" ("Dreams") that he turned into a hushed ballad as he explained that it was for "everyone who is imprisoned unjustly and seeks liberty.''

The Herald said that while historic, the show was viewed as a triumph for the Castro regime by Republican U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami, who decried the fact that there was no mention made of human-rights violations by the regime or of the political prisoners behind bars for speaking out against Castro.

For a few hours, anyway, all that political drama was pushed to the side as the packed crowd took in 15 artists from six Latin American countries, including Cuba's Los Van Van and Silvio Rodriguez and island rap/funk group X Alfonso, one of many acts that included subversive lines in their songs. Despite signing a pledge not to make political statements, a female rapper with X Alfonso sang, "Down with the control. Down with those who manipulate you."

Spanish pop singer Miguel Bosé told the crowd, "We're all here together — for the dream of concord, for the dream of dialogue!" and was later joined by Cuban singer/songwriter Carlos Varela for the latter's "Muro," ("Wall"), which speaks of longing for a world outside Cuba's seawall.

Also on the bill were Puerto Rican singers Olga Tañon and Danny Rivera, Cuban artists Amaury Pérez and Carlos Varela, Orishas Italian rapper Jovanotti, Spain's Victor Manuel and Luis Eduardo Aute, New York-based Cuban singer Cucu Diamantes, and the band Yerba Buena.
