Taylor Swift On Kanye West's VMA Tirade: An MTV News Exclusive

When Kanye West jumped onstage with Taylor Swift while she accepted her award for Best Female Video, the singer was initially excited. That excitement faded, however, when the MC took the opportunity to champion Beyoncé during the time that Swift should have been giving her acceptance speech.

"It has been a crazy night, hasn't it?" she told MTV News backstage after the show. Taylor went on to say that when Kanye initially emerged, she thought it would end up being a good thing, not perhaps one of the most controversial moments in VMA history.

"Well, you know, I was up there and I was standing there and I saw Kanye up on the stage," she explained. "I was really excited ... and I kind of wasn't excited anymore."

However, the 19-year-old VMA winner got a second chance to give her speech, thanks to an "incredibly classy" Beyoncé, who forfeited her stage time when she won Video of the Year to allow Swift her moment to shine, without any interruption.

"You know, they told me to be ready just in case she might want to say something," Swift explained. "It was just so wonderful and so incredibly classy of her and just gracious and wonderful to let me say something. She's just been my hero and one of my idols ever since I was little. She's a great person."

Kanye later apologized on his blog for the interruption, saying, "I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom."

Madonna and Janet Jackson's Michael Jackson tribute and Kanye West's outburst were among the standout moments.

A blood-spurting Lady Gaga, a stage-busting Kanye West, a thrilling Michael Jackson tribute, an acrobatic Pink, the classiest move in VMA history and more surprises than even we could have predicted. That was the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, which stormed New York's legendary Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night (September 13) with more jaw-dropping moments than a season's worth of "The Hills."

In addition to wins for VMA regulars like Beyoncé, Green Day and Eminem, a couple of future icons, Gaga and Taylor Swift, got their first Moonmen in a show that was as barely contained as host Russell Brand's raging libido.

The night got off to a glittering start with the first shock of the evening, a visit from the VMA queen herself: Madonna. In a moving, nearly eight-minute speech, Madonna fondly recalled her first private meeting which Michael Jackson and the impact he had on her life and her reaction to his death in June at the age of 50. "In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the Internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and onstage and I thought, 'My God, he was so unique, so original, so rare,' " she said. "And there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king."

The full tribute ended with an intense performance from Janet Jackson, who danced along with her late brother's song "Scream" as Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Pink hollered with excitement.

Katy Perry, uncharacteristically dressed in pants, helped kick off the main program by singing Queen's "We Will Rock You" alongside Aerosmith's Joe Perry as host Russell Brand emerged at the top of a set of steps in a body-hugging tuxedo and top hat, his name emblazoned in 10-foot-tall lights behind him.

Brand set things off right by making a cheeky reference to Katy Perry's backside and stayed true to his promise to keep it all about the love by asking the audience to honor Michael Jackson by "loving one another in his memory." Of course, his version of love was what the British might call a bit "randy," and while former president George W. Bush was safe this year, the censors were working overtime to keep up with the rainstorm of F-bombs and solicitations of Megan Fox and Perry. (Katy, not Joe.)

Though Russell didn't get his biggest wish — an onstage "love guide" from Beyoncé and Jay-Z — he was happy to debunk the rumor dogging the night's other leading lady, one named Gaga. "There's been a lot of mudslinging and rumor mongering and rubbish, people saying that she's a hermaphrodite," Brand said. "I think it's a disgrace that a woman cannot be successful, sexy and have an aggressive sexuality without people saying, 'Oh, she must be a bloke.' That is sexist. And I would like to condemn the male-dominated media for their disgusting treatment of this incredible woman. And if you haven't worked it out by now, yeah, I'm trying to f--- her."

The night's first award was for Best Female Video and it served as a jaw-dropper, as Taylor Swift took the prize over seeming shoo-ins like Gaga and Beyoncé for "You Belong With Me." Clearly shocked, Swift said she'd always dreamed about what it would be like to win a Moonman, never thinking it would actually happen. She was interrupted mid-dream, however, by legendary awards-show interrupter Kanye, who took the microphone from Swift and said, "I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," as the crowd howled and booed and Beyoncé looked on in shock. "One of the best videos of all time!"

Brand tried to remind the crowd to remember the love after 'Ye's outburst, and then Green Day took home Best Rock Video for "21 Guns," earning a standing ovation from the competition in Fall Out Boy. The Best Pop Video award continued the temporary shut-out for nine-time nominees Beyoncé and Gaga, as Britney Spears accepted the Moonman for "Womanizer" long distance from her tour.

The reading of the nominees for Best Male Video drew some boos when Kanye's name came up — as well as shouts of "Taylor!" — but it was T.I. who won for "Live Your Life," an award he could not accept because he is currently serving a one-year prison term.

Standing in the 42nd Street subway station, Swift played the role of the world's most famous busker as she shimmied in a trainful of fans while singing "You Belong With Me," taking a ride all the way to a stage outside Radio City. Interruptions aside, the music kept rolling all night thanks to Wale and the house band, joined by 3OH!3, Pitbull, members of the All-American Rejects and Kid Cudi, who paid tribute to his pal DJ AM, who died of an apparent drug overdose last month.

Green Day brought some rock energy to the stage with a bare-bones rip through "East Jesus Nowhere," with singer Billie Joe Armstrong making full use of the stage and sauntering out to sing the gospel of punk rock among the audience. After walking up the aisle, he invited as many fans as he could onto the stage before getting swallowed up by the pogoing hordes and body-surfing his way back to his cohorts.

Standing alone in front of a sea of green lasers, Beyoncé crooned "Sweet Dreams," quickly segueing into "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." She strutted to the edge of the stage and was joined by her two dancers for the signature "Ladies" shimmy. Echoing the elegant beauty of the video, B, now surrounded by more than two dozen dancers wearing similar, though less bejeweled, gray unitards, did the signature hand flops, karate punches and hair flips that made the video one of the year's most striking clips. Speaking of striking, Muse, performing for the first time on American TV, played their new single, "Uprising," to a sweaty crowd of 700 of their biggest fans. The rousing glam-opera call to victory, accompanied by shifting apocalyptic images, had the triumphant feel of a high-tech rocking political rally and, more than likely, set the stage for their stated goal of planting their outrageous stadium-rocking flag on these shores.

Not to be outdone, Pink donned a blindfold and was lifted up to the rafters for a dramatic run through "Sober," during which she performed acrobatic spins, flips and pirouettes while suspended by a high wire.

Jay-Z, however, needed no such accoutrements, walking slowly from his stretch limo to the stage for the TV debut of "Empire State of Mind," backed by Alicia Keys at a piano emblazoned with the NYC skyline. With towering neon images of the town he rules scrolling behind him, Jay owned the stage with the only three things he needs: a microphone, a mind full of giant-slaying rhymes and the swagger of a man who knows his competition is always in the rear view.

Speaking of hip-hop legends, Eminem showed off some of his acting skills during a couple of surprise appearances earlier in the night, goofing along with Tracy Morgan as the "30 Rock" star tried to get into 50 Cent-type shape and tune up his vocals. Slim Shady later got some good news, as "We Made You" won for Best Hip-Hop Video. Looking serious while sporting dark hair, a white hoodie under a black leather jacket and black jeans, Em thanked his fans for sticking with him during hard times, as well as longtime mentor Dr. Dre, and giving a special shout-out to his fallen friend, late D12 member Proof.

After years out of the spotlight, the usually reclusive Shady came out one more time to present the award for Best New Artist to Lady Gaga, who had changed into a red lace dress topped by a mask that looked like a building on fire. "It's my first f---ing Moonman," Gaga said from behind the mask, which she pulled off to thank her fans and "the gays."

Beyoncé didn't go home empty-handed, either. She got hers when it was time for Video of the Year, as "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" danced into the winner's circle. "This is amazing," said B, recalling her first VMA nomination at 17 with Destiny's Child. "It was one of the most exciting moments in my life, so I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment," she added, in one of the classiest moments in VMA history. Accepting a big hug from B, a beaming Swift joked, "Maybe we could try this again," thanking all her fans for their support.

Among all the awards and performances, there was the first reveal of the Michael Jackson "This Is It" documentary, which promises some stunning live footage, as well as the extended trailer to "New Moon," the "Twilight" sequel that promises more Volturi, more Edward and way, way more drama.

We have no idea if Katy Perry accepted Brand's show-ending offer to join him in his room, but either way, everyone who was at Radio City went home happy Sunday night. Well, except maybe Kanye.

Madonna Wrote Michael Jackson VMA Speech 'From My Heart'

'It was a privilege and an honor for me to say what I had to say,' singer says of dedication.

After delivering her heartfelt tribute to the late Michael Jackson at the VMAs, Madonna talked with MTV News' Jim Cantiello about her speech backstage.

"Michael Jackson was born in August 1958," her speech began. "So was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was 6 he became a superstar and was perhaps the world's most beloved child. When I was 6 my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick."

She went on to talk about the time they spent together, her admiration for his talent, his "vulnerability and charm," and her sons' love for his music.

After the show, with a somber face, Madonna explained just how much the dedication to Jackson meant to her.

"[It was] extremely important because I didn't really have my chance to pay my last respects to him or speak of him in the way that I wanted to," the Material Girl said. "It was a privilege and an honor for me to say what I had to say.

"[It] took me all week to write [the speech], and I just wrote it from my heart," she added. "And I kept slashing and burning and editing."

While she did admit that she left out some choice MJ anecdotes, it was purely in the interest of time.

"I really cut it down. It was painful," she said. "I said what I had to say at the end of the day."

Jay-Z Credits 'Truth' For His Long Rap Reign

'All my music and emotions is based off real truth. I believe that's why I'm here and still competing,' Hov tells Mixtape Daily.

Hov had a big week with Blueprint 3 hitting stores on September 9. Numbers don't lie and neither does Jay-Z. Regardless of his media blitz the past seven days (really it started once "D.O.A." dropped over the summer), Jay-Z says the real key to sustained popularity is the way he articulates his personal facts in his music.

"All my music and emotions is based off real truth. I believe that's why I'm here and still competing for VMA nominations and Grammys every year," Jay said. He not only performed at this past Sunday's Video Music Awards, but was also up for a couple of Moonmen against the likes of Eminem, Kanye West and Asher Roth. "Ten #1 albums in a row. That's not something you can doctor. I can make the greatest marketing plan in the world ... I can't make that happen unless that's some truth under there."

One of Jay's good friends, Sean Combs, agrees that speaking your reality in music is key.

"With me and Jay, you gonna have to get down or lay down anyway," Diddy, whose next LP, Last Train to Paris, comes out in 2010, said of their practically unparalleled tenure. "There's other rules to this game that you gonna have to abide by. At the end of the day, we understand. We understand the importance of telling the truth. If you're just getting into the game, you're probably telling a lie anyway because you're telling somebody else's game. If we still here, we're still here because we're telling the truth. Number two, we have relationships, and number three, we still know how to make hit records. That's what this thing is about. You could be five years old, 70 years old — you make a hit record, it's gonna stand the test of time. It's something the game has to get used to."

Indeed. It's looking like Jay will have 11 straight #1 albums in a row. Blueprint 3 is on track to come in at #1 on the SoundScan charts this Wednesday.

This year's VMAs were nothing if not full of surprises, and the biggest one came from Kanye West.

At the beginning of the evening, Kanye West stormed the stage just after the first award, for Best Female Video. Taylor Swift won the award, and during her acceptance speech, West abruptly cut the teen singer off, grabbing the mic and protesting in support of Beyoncé, who was also nominated.

"I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," he proclaimed as B looked on from the crowd, stunned.

Soon afterward, West was escorted from the building.

Later in the show, after Beyoncé won Video of the Year for "Single Ladies," she graciously invited Swift onstage, waiving her acceptance speech so Swift could belatedly complete hers.

"Thank you," Beyoncé said. "This is amazing, I remember being 17 years old, up for my first MTV award with Destiny's Child, it was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment. "

At around the same time, West took to his blog to deliver one of his familiar all-caps posts (edited into sentence case here) addressing the situation.

"I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom," he wrote. "I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would've said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she's in the bleachers! I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!

"Beyoncé's video was the best of this decade!!!! I'm sorry to my fans if I let you guys down!!!! I'm sorry to my friends at MTV. I will apologize to Taylor 2mrw. Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna booooo me but I'm a fan of real pop culture!!! No disrespect but we watchin' the show at the crib right now cause ... well you know!!!! I'm still happy for Taylor!!!! Boooyaaawwww!!!! You are very very talented!!! I gave my awards to Outkast when they deserved it over me ... That's what it is!!!!!!! I'm not crazy y'all, i'm just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I'm sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!"

The buzz of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards certainly surrounds Kanye West and Taylor Swift, but the big headlines from the rock world all belong to Green Day, who took home three awards (Best Rock Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography) for their clip for "21 Guns," and they also delivered a triumphant, raucous performance of "East Jesus Nowhere" (where they welcomed a massive throng of fans onto the stage to rock with them during the tune's finale).

MTV News was tagging along with the band all throughout the evening, including the moments just before they hit the stage for their show-stealing performance. "It's always a little nerve-racking and fun," bass player Mike Dirnt said. "That the fans vote for it — that's the important thing." Dirnt also said that he enjoyed playing around with Jack Black's giant battle ax while frontman Billie Joe Armstrong gave the acceptance speech for Best Rock Video.

After chatting briefly, he hit the stage with his bandmates and made sure to slap hands with some fans before they were given the cue to go live. What followed is what you saw on the broadcast: Green Day storming into "East Jesus Nowhere." As the behind-the-scenes video reveals, drummer Tre Cool was also integral in bringing the fans onto the stage — a stage that was definitely full by the time the band wrapped up the song with Armstrong being held aloft by the throng.

Following the performance, the band was whisked backstage and greeted by people who declared that the band had "nailed it," and perhaps no truer words were spoken all night.

Lil Mama Crashes Jay-Z And Alicia Keys' VMA Performance

Surprise appearance causes a stir on Twitter, with #Lilmamais becoming the top trending topic.
By Shaheem Reid

Jay-Z keeps his cool in even the most awkward situations. On Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, rapper and "America's Best Dance Crew" judge Lil Mama came onstage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' performance unannounced and uninvited.

While Jay was ending his final "Empire State of Mind" verse, Mama came up from her seat in the crowd onto the stage and started bobbing her head to the beat. Jay looked surprised but continued to bop to the beat and even kept rapping. Hov patted Mama on the leg to fall back and even threw in a quick joke, saying, "You T-Paining right now," while Keys finished her chorus. The line refers to T-Pain jumping onstage with Jay-Z at Summer Jam during his "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" performance. While Pain said he was asked to get on with the Jiggaman, Jay said in interviews he had no idea the singer was coming out with him.

In Mama's case, she didn't pay attention to Jay's gesture. When it came time to take a triumphant pose at the end of "Empire State of Mind" — a pose meant for Jay and Alicia Keys — Mama came up to the front and stood beside her peers and even did a b-girl pose next to them.

Since her surprise appearance, Mama has caused quite a stir on Twitter. At press time, "#Lilmamais" was the top trending topic.

Fabolous got in on the Twitter fun with a few updates. "#Lilmamais like the dude that parachutes down on the field during a game!" Fab tweeted. "#Lilmamais gonna get security at the stages of every award show from now on. #Lilmamais the bird that flew outta Lady Gaga's nest on her face!!"

Neither Lil Mama nor Jay-Z could be reached for comment at press time.

It's no surprise "Kanye's" and "#teamtaylor" are among Twitter's top 10 trending topics early Monday morning (September 14) following Kanye West's outburst at the Video Music Awards, where he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video to protest on behalf of Beyoncé.

In addition to the outcry of fan support for Swift, fellow celebrities continue to bolster the 19-year-old singer via Twitter and blog messages. The latest celebrity to come to Swift's defense is fellow VMA nominee Kelly Clarkson, who penned an open letter to West on her blog.

"Dear Kanye, what happened to you as a child??" Clarkson wrote. "Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we're all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like sh--. I mean, I've seen you do some pretty sh---y things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, a--hole ways. It's absolutely fascinating how much I don't like you. I like everyone. I even like my a--hole ex that cheated on me over you ... which is pretty odd since I don't even personally know you. The best part of this evening is that you weren't even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a Moonman that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

"I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won, and I was excited for her ... so why can't you be??" the letter continued. "I'm not even mad at you for being an a--hole ... I just pity you because you're a sad human being. On a side note, Beyoncé has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!! Taylor Swift, you outsell him ... that's why he's bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!"

Immediately following the incident, celebrities like Katy Perry, Pink and Paramore's Haley Williams took to their Twitter accounts to express distaste for the stunt. Swift's close friend, country artist Kellie Pickler, tweeted, "Tator Tot, you handled yourself with Grace. Kanye, go grow some f-ing balls, bi---! don't mess w/my lil sis!!"

Mary-Kate Olsen took a more diplomatic approach, praising Beyoncé for giving Swift the chance to finish her speech. "I'm so glad Beyoncé gave Taylor her moment," Olsen tweeted. "She knows what's best!" "The Hills" star Spencer Pratt acknowledged that even he wouldn't pull a stunt like that. "Let's be very clear: King Spencer would never do anything like what Kanye just did to a sweet soul like Taylor!" Pratt tweeted.

Swift gets another shot at an acceptance speech after West interrupted her first attempt.

In a classy display of selflessness, Taylor Swift got a do-over at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when Beyoncé brought the teen singer up following B's Video of the Year win.

Beyoncé told the audience about her first VMA win as a 17-year-old with Destiny's Child and how much it meant to her. The singer then called Swift from backstage to huge applause.

Earlier in the show, Swift won the Best Female Video award for "You Belong With Me" over B's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." But during her acceptance speech, Kanye West crashed the stage, took the microphone from her and protested the win, saying Beyoncé deserved it.

B and Swift both wore bright-red dresses and exchanged a hug before Beyoncé passed the mic to the teen artist.

"Maybe we can try this again," Swift said, drawing a laugh.

"I would really like to thank Roman White, who directed the video, and Lucas Till for being in it," Swift said. "I would like to thank all the fans on Twitter and MySpace and everyone that came out to my shows this summer. And I would like to thank my little brother's high school for letting us shoot there."

Swift barely had a moment to utter a word during her first acceptance speech early in the show; West took the microphone away from her almost immediately.

"I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," he proclaimed as B looked on from the crowd, stunned. West later left Radio City Music Hall after he was booed heavily for his rant.

Kanye West might have had the most memorable moment of the 2009 VMAs — which says a lot, given Lady Gaga's eye-popping fashion and performance, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' electrifying love letter to New York, Madonna and Janet Jackson's tribute to Michael Jackson and the extended trailer for "New Moon."

But it was when Kanye jumped onstage while Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female Video that really had people talking. "I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," West declared during Swift's speech.

It was a moment that had many of the artists in the Radio City Music Hall crowd pretty upset.

"F--- u Kanye," Katy Perry tweeted while at the show. "It's like you stepped on a kitten."

Pink, who performed at the show, wrote a few tweets about Kanye's rant. "Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh-- on earth. Quote me," she wrote. "My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl and deserved her moment. She should know we all love her. Beyonce is a classy lady. I feel for her, too. It's not her fault at all, and her and Taylor did their thing. And douche bag got kicked out."

Kings of Leon's Nathan Followill expressed sadness for losing a Moonman, also noting that he didn't agree with West's tantrum. "We lost damnit. Maybe next year," he wrote. "At least we got to see the worst haircut since 1984 try to steal the spotlight from lovely Taylor Swift."

Perez Hilton very simply said, "WTF Kanye????" Paramore's Hayley Williams added, "Taylor swift, y'all. #TeamTaylor."

MTV News' VMA Twitter correspondent iJustine wrote, "Kanye West sucks!!! Totally just dissed Taylor Swift for winning best female artist. Jealous little non-tweeting punk!"

Jack Barakat from All Time Low noted that perhaps something had affected Kanye's judgment when he jumped onstage. "Kanye smells like he's [had] at least one drink."

"The Hills" crew also weighed in. Lo Bosworth wrote, "We love Taylor Swift. Wow, Kanye — manners? My goodness."

Heidi Montag wrote, "Congrats @taylorswift13 on your VMA!!! You deserve it more than anyone!! I saw the devil in action when Kanye west stole your mic! U rock!!! @taylorswift13 don't let that evil steal your thunder!!!!! This is your big night!!"
