It's the story behind the epic performance: As Janet Jackson geared up to present a tribute to her brother Michael during the MTV Video Music Awards, she was still struggling with her emotions nearly three months after MJ passed away. While she said that the tribute was "the most fun I have ever had working on a project for TV," she also said she fought to hold back tears while a team of dancers took the stage dressed in MJ's iconic looks, from single sequined gloves to red leather jackets to glittering, military-style uniforms.

On Saturday, during MTV's exclusive 12:30 p.m. airing of "The Making of Janet Jackson's Video Music Awards Tribute Performance," Janet will give viewers a behind-the-scenes peek at what it took to put on the show and talk candidly about her swirling emotions during the entire production.

"It was very emotional for me and I was trying not to cry," Janet told MTV. "And I got choked up a few times. It gave me goosebumps. I thought [the dancers] looked incredible. They had just learned it."

As she waited to go onstage for her portion of the tribute — a raucous dance number set to "Scream," the single she and MJ recorded together in the mid-'90s — Janet was overcome by the vision of so many dancers resembling the King of Pop in wardrobe and dance steps.

"[It's] just like you're seeing all these carbon copies of your brother, and because he left such an impression with his style on so many different generations — and, still, this generation — and to see them try to mimic him to the T and doing an incredible job at it as if he was the one that taught them — 'No, this is how you do it' — and to see them look so close to his movement, it just touched me," Janet said. "It really touched me."

"The Making of Janet Jackson's Video Music Awards Tribute Performance" captures footage from the very first day of rehearsals in Los Angeles to the final moments before Janet and hit the stage of Radio City Music Hall. You can see it all on MTV this Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

"This is the most fun — from my mouth to God's ears — the most fun I have ever had working on a project for TV," said Janet.

Jay-Z Defends 'Super-Passionate' Kanye West's VMA Interruption

Posted: 17 Sep 2009 11:25 PM PDT

'Of course it was rude because it was [Taylor Swift's] moment, but that's the way he really felt,' Jay says, admitting incident was 'rude.'

Jay-Z has known Kanye West for many years, so when he watched West interrupt Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, he probably wasn't as surprised as a lot of people.

"He's just a super-passionate person, and of course it was rude because it was [Swift's] moment, but that's the way he really felt. [But] he's been that passionate from his first record," Jay reportedly told BBC Radio.

"He used to jump on tables ... I was trying to make the first Blueprint, he's jumping on tables, rapping, and I'm like, 'Yo, not now.' That was just him. He's always been that passionate."

But while Jay may have understood Kanye's outburst, he wasn't about to give his producer and protégé a pass for the way he behaved during the VMAs, either. And he told him as much when the two appeared the following night on "The Jay Leno Show" (where West would subsequently offer a tearful apology to Swift for his actions).

"[I told him] I think it was rude, [and] that he has to watch his passion. At the end of the day, we're going to celebrate him for his passion more than vilify him [for it]," Jay said. "Because his passion, which caused him to make Graduation and all these great records, is the same thing that causes him to step out of line sometimes. So as he grows, he has to learn how to balance that. And he'll learn that in years to come. That passion right there ... that wasn't fake or staged — it was how he really felt, and it was just inappropriate. It wasn't fair to Taylor."

And now that West has apologized (multiple times, and to Swift personally) for his outburst, Jay thinks it's time for everyone to move on. To him, this whole situation, while unfortunate, has been blown out of proportion

"I mean, it's an awards show, really, and I think it's a bit blown out," Jay said. "He's on the cover of every paper, he didn't kill anybody. Nobody got harmed," Jay said. " I don't think he should lay low, I think he should go on tour and have a brilliant career. It's an awards show."

Taylor Swift Gets A Few Questions Too Many About Kanye West VMA Interruption

Posted: 18 Sep 2009 12:25 AM PDT

'I'm trying not to make it into a bigger deal than it already is,' Swift says.

Kanye West's interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday remains a hot media topic, five days later. Swift talked about the issue during an interview on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show on Friday morning (September 18) and was asked to talk about it a bit more than she wanted to in an interview with a Tampa Bay, Florida, DJ.

With Seacrest, Swift talked about everything from winning a VMA as a country artist to whether she'll write a song about the VMA incident.

"Well, I think that in order to write a song about something, I have to have clarity and be completely sure, and I'm not there yet," she told Seacrest about the possibility that she may write a song about West. (She wrote the song "Forever & Always" about her breakup with Jonas Brother Joe Jonas.)

As for the VMA win, she said she's "really proud to bring the first VMA home to Nashville. [It's good] to know there's a Moonman on its way to Nashville." She also spoke about the outpouring of kindness to her in the wake of the incident.

"I got flowers from Janet Jackson!" Swift said. "It was the nicest card ever — I took a picture of it! But it was really, really nice, and everyone was really sweet to me this week."

The interview with Seacrest went a lot smoother than one she did on Thursday with Tampa Bay radio station 93.3 FLZ. Radio host MJ persistently asked Swift about the incident after she'd answered his initial questions and repeatedly but politely asked him to move onto another subject.

"Well, you know, I think that the outpouring of love is what I focus on about that whole thing, and getting flowers from Janet Jackson is something that I never thought would happen in my whole life," she initially answered. "Just everybody being supportive and showing love, it was really nice [to know] people I didn't even think knew who I was were out there having my back and being really very kind to me."

After MJ, who also had Miley Cyrus abruptly end an interview with him in June, asked about it several times, she very politely said: "You know, honestly, I'm trying not to make it into a bigger deal than it already is. It's kind of become more of a bigger deal than I thought it would be. I would just like to move on a little bit. ... I didn't know what to think but I think we should talk about something else. It's nothing I feel like we should talk about."

After yet another question, she handed the phone to her rep and moved on herself — to another interview.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

Paula Abdul Parodies Ellen DeGeneres On 'VH1 Divas'

Former 'American Idol' judge mimics Ellen's talk-show dance moves in a blond wig on Thursday's show.

Halfway through Paula Abdul's hosting duties on Thursday night's "VH1 Divas" — her first prime-time gig since leaving "American Idol" — the former pop hitmaker staged an amusing send-up of Ellen DeGeneres, who's about to replace her on "Idol."

Strutting down the aisle at the Howard Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to the tune of Pink's "Get the Party Started," Abdul donned an Ellen-esque short blond wig and mimicked the comedian's well-known entrances on her syndicated talk show. Paula had no doubt been studying up on Ellen's dance moves, because she nailed 'em all as she made her way onto the stage.

Once there, Abdul was greeted by a talk-show-style set of two oversize chairs and a coffee table. The host plopped onto one of the chairs, threw her legs over one said and said, "Why are you all staring at me? Can't a girl try out a new job?"

She then got up and turned slightly serious. "All kidding aside, nothing but love, Ellen," she said. "I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on the new gig! And you've got to call me if you have any Simon [Cowell] problems, because I know him best."

It was the funniest moment in an evening packed with a range of musical performances. Miley Cyrus sang alongside Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson teamed up with Melissa Etheridge, and Jennifer Hudson stood by Stevie Wonder as he played piano and they traded lyrics on "All in Love Is Fair."

If you missed "VH1 Divas" on Thursday night, don't fret: Tune in to VH1 on Friday (September 18) at 7 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. or Sunday at 1 p.m. to see the Divas in action.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Kanye West Compares His Life To 'Truman Show' In Blog Post

'Another day in the Truman Show AKA my life!,' West writes.

In the wake of Kanye West's stage-crashing interruption of Taylor Swift's Best Female Video acceptance speech at Sunday's Video Music Awards, the rapper spent the next two days apologizing profusely for the incident. The mea culpas included a pair of blog posts, an appearance on the premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" and a personal phone call to Swift herself after she told the hosts of "The View" that he had not attempted to get in touch with her. He otherwise took a break from his personal blog, which he typically updates half a dozen times a day.

On Thursday he broke his Internet silence and resumed posting his regular collection of fashion endorsements, links to info about art installations and cool architecture photos. The only personal note in any of the posts was one with the headline "Another day in the Truman Show AKA my life!" The entire content of the post was an image of the poster for the 1998 Jim Carrey movie "The Truman Show," which was about a man who is unaware that his entire life has been constructed for a television show.

Earlier, Kanye deleted both of his apologies to Swift (his initial all-caps post and the second one, where he compared himself to Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents").

Conversely, while Swift has appeared on TV and in public since the VMA incident, she has maintained cyber silence, having not updated her Twitter since before the show began Sunday night. Swift is normally a regular user of the micro-blogging service, but as of press time, her account has now been dormant for five days.

Slaughterhouse Define 'Hottest MC' -- But Can They Make Our List?

Posted: 18 Sep 2009 02:21 AM PDT

Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce Da 5'9" all have their own definitions.
By Shaheem Reid

When you ask the members of Slaughterhouse — Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I — what it means to be the Hottest MC in the Game, you'll get four different opinions.

"There's so many different dimensions of a hot MC," Ortiz said. "You gotta be able to do what you do in the booth. Be yourself in interviews. Be a great showman. Be an on-spot rap dude. You gotta have the complete package. If you do records well and get up onstage and you're looking at your shoes, you're not a hot MC. You gotta have every element mastered. You gotta love the art."

Budden (who has ranked very high early on in our Hottest MCs fan poll) has a very gruff relationship with the word "hot."

"Joe Budden is against the word 'hot,' " the Jersey native said, talking about himself in third person. "I don't like it. I don't use it. 'Hot' is not something that comes down to your craft. That's why I despise the word. It's too many other things that come into the equation. The label can make somebody hot. It's to the point now where the artist and the fans don't even decide what's hot."

"I equate the word 'hot' with buzz," Royce chimed in. "Somebody can have a big buzz and be hot. It doesn't make them an MC. 'Hot' to me, I don't use the word either. 'Hot MC' doesn't mean he can rhyme. I can wake up and turn my swag on, doesn't mean I'm a dope MC. It means I'm hot for the moment."

Crooked I had the most optimistic viewpoint when talking about Hot MCs.

"I think 'hot' is a way for everybody putting together the list to create a conversation," Crook said. "You can put so many different things under 'hot' that can spark a debate. I think it's about the debate. I don't think it's about the actual list."

Crooked said if you want to just judge on skills, then you have to put the title 'dope' on the list, then all four members of Slaughterhouse would definitely make the top-10 rankings. But what about our upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list? (To see what it takes to make the list, check out our Hottest MCs criteria.)

All the members would make it if it were based strictly on lyrics. They all have a huge buzz on the Internet, especially Budden, who has been very forthcoming with his personal and professional life on Joe Budden TV and UStream. Nothing is off limits, from his girlfriend talking about a stranger punching her in the eye to Joey's beef with Raekwon the Chef to studio recording sessions.

But Slaughterhouse have put out albums independently thus far and have to complete with artists who sell hundreds of thousands in one week. Now it's up to the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust to decide.

Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.

Kermit Says He'd Never Crash VMA Stage: 'Frogs Don't Roll That Way'

Kermit also talks about Video Music Awards date with Lady Gaga.

Kermit the Frog knows Miss Piggy might make it impossible, but he would still love the chance to see his VMA date, Lady Gaga, again, even though he's confirmed that the pair are only friends.

"I'd love to hang out with Lady Gaga," he told MTV News about the VMA winner. "And if it wasn't for Miss Piggy's restraining order, and left hook, I would. ... Lady Gaga and I haven't spoken since the VMAs. We tried texting, but Miss Piggy keeps jamming the signal."

Given Gaga's penchant for costume changes and performance art, it seems like Kermit probably wouldn't know what to expect from another encounter with the pop star. As for her multiple outfits on Sunday, he says he loved everything. "Lady Gaga looked great in everything she wore. And I haven't seen that many wardrobe changes since ... well, since the last time Miss Piggy and I were late for a movie," he explained.

Asked if he felt inspired to hop onstage with Gaga at the show, à la Kanye West and Lil Mama, the show-biz veteran said it's not in a frog's nature to do things like that. "Frogs don't roll that way," he said. "We'd rather croak than crash."

So, does Miss Piggy have a guy or three that she would have liked to use to make Kermit jealous at the VMAs? "Green Day," he guessed. "For some reason, she's obsessed with that color."

Pearl Jam's Mike McCready Explains <i>Backspacer</i>'s Title

Posted: 18 Sep 2009 01:26 AM PDT

Band's new album isn't just named after a vintage typewriter key.
By Kyle Anderson

When Pearl Jam released their most recent album in 2006, they left it self-titled, as if to suggest that they were getting back to their roots. The new album, which comes out on Sunday (September 20) exclusively at Target stores, will carry the title Backspacer. Does that mean the band is on some sort of retreat, looking to erase the past few years?

Actually, as guitarist Mike McCready explained to MTV News, the origin of the title is a lot simpler. "[Eddie Vedder] got the initial idea from these 1930s typewriters that he collects and writes his lyrics on. There's a key on it that says 'Backspacer,' " he said. "Now it says 'Backspace,' I believe. But that's where he got that."

That's not to say that McCready doesn't take another, deeper meaning away from the record's title. "I think it's also about looking over your life, from when you're a kid all the way up until now. There will be some artwork that will show you what I'm talking about."

The artwork in question comes courtesy of cartoonist Tom Tomorrow, the man behind acerbic political comic strip "This Modern World." Pearl Jam even made the art a part of the build-up for the album, sprinkling parts of the record's cover across various sites on the Internet and leaving fans to find all nine components in a sort of online scavenger hunt. Ultimately, McCready promises the art will inform the songs themselves. "Some young thought processes turn into art forms on the record," he said.

Raekwon Says ODB Tops Kanye West, Lil Mama As Ultimate Stage-Crasher

Rae says his Wu-Tang Clan bandmate 'pioneered' the art of bum-rushing the stage.
By Shaheem Reid

Recently, Raekwon the Chef took time to reflect on the 2009 VMA stage-crashing incidents while visiting Power 106 radio personalities the L.A. Leakers. He said Kanye West and Lil Mama still take a backseat to the late, great Ol' Dirty Bastard.

"That's his lane," Rae laughed, remembering how Dirty interrupted the 1998 Grammys to protest Wu-Tang Clan's loss. "Dirt Dog did that because he had that suit on that day. Nobody seen Dirt Dog with a suit on before. That was Dirt. I'm sure everybody that's ridiculing Kanye or Lil Mama, Dirt was in that same position. He pioneered that beasting-the-stage sh--."

Rae did say that Kanye's interruption of Taylor Swift wasn't quite as cool.

"Why he do that? That was a f---in' little girl, B," Rae said. "That was some sucker sh--. I ain't respect that right there. I ain't respect that.

"I like Kanye," the Chef added. "He had to be drunk or he felt like, 'F--- that! I own the awards.' I feel that wasn't fair to her as a teenager. To do that against a little white teenager, that wasn't really cool. At least he apologized. When you drinking, you don't know what the f--- you gonna do. They said he had a [bottle of Hennessy] on the red carpet. You know what that Henny will do. That Henny will f--- with you."

Raekwon was confused by Lil Mama's actions as well. He initially thought it was planned for her to get onstage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

"Lil Mama was on some Brooklyn sh-- that night, yeah," Rae said. "I thought she was supposed to come out. It is what it is. I looked at it like a Brooklyn thing. She's from Brooklyn, Jay's from Brooklyn. Maybe they were feeling themselves."

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

Cash Money Lawsuit Against DJ Drama Thrown Out

Posted: 17 Sep 2009 11:56 PM PDT

By Gil Kaufman

Finding that Cash Money Records failed to provide a "valid legal claim against [the] defendants," a New York federal judge threw out a case against DJ Drama in a dispute involving the alleged illegal sales of Lil Wayne's music.

According to AllHipHop.com, the judge cleared Drama and several other defendants in the case, in which the distribution company they signed with was charged with illegally peddling Wayne's music, accusations Drama told MTV News in April were "misplaced."

The beef was not between mixtape king Drama and Wayne, who collaborated earlier this year on Dedication 3, the third installment of the popular mixtape series that helped catapult Wayne to superstar status. But when Drama began selling his mixtapes to retail outlets, Cash Money filed suit against the Texas-based company BCD Music Group, an independent distribution company that had a contract with Drama to sell his projects, including the Wayne collaboration Dedication 2.

Cash Money was given until September 9 to amend their initial complaint and continue the lawsuit, according to court documents. The attorney representing BCD Music Group told AllHipHop that Cash Money Records "had requested that the case be dismissed 'without prejudice' ... which would have meant that Cash Money could try again. ... However, the judge agreed with our request that it be dismissed 'with prejudice,' which basically drives a stake through the heart of the action and puts the final nail in the coffin of this lawsuit. It's over and done!"

At the time the suit was announced, Drama was adamant that the dispute was not about a beef between himself and Wayne. "This is not a case of Lil Wayne vs. DJ Drama. Me and Wayne are good," he said. "I am confident that this matter will be resolved quickly without harming the relationships between myself, Wayne and Cash Money Records.

Drama had no comment about the decision, while spokespeople for Cash Money could not be reached at press time.
