Eminem Turns Method Actor In VMA-Nominated 'We Made You' Clip

Director Joseph Kahn says Em would stay in character on set, in Behind the Lens.

Eminem's clip for "We Made You" might seem like a laugh, but for the rapper, the tabloid-target-blasting video was a chance to indulge in some deep method acting. Seriously.

"Having worked with him so many times, the thing people don't realize is that he's a fantastic actor," said music-video vet Joseph Kahn, who won a Grammy in 2002 for his work on Em's "Without Me" clip, which also won that year's VMA for Video of the Year. "He actually stays in character on set. So when he's Tony Romo, he's Tony Romo the whole time. If he's Bret Michaels, he talks like Bret Michaels. He learned it from ['8 Mile' director] Curtis Hanson. He's a method actor, like Daniel Day Lewis."

Kahn, who is up for Video of the Year at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards for "We Made You" — and is competing against himself in the same category for Britney Spears' "Womanizer" — said the concept for the video was a collaboration between himself, Eminem and Em's longtime manager Paul Rosenberg.

"They called me up, and Marshall — I never call him Eminem — said they wanted to do a funny video," explained Kahn, who has helmed iconic clips for everyone from Britney Spears to Wu-Tang Clan, Mariah Carey, Aerosmith, Kelly Clarkson and the Black Eyed Peas. After listening to the song a few times in a recording studio, Kahn got on the phone with Slim Shady and the rapper explained that he wanted to do a sequel of sorts to "Without Me," in which he takes out verbal and visual hits on the pop icons of the day. "He didn't know if we could hit all the references, though, because he was rapping so fast. I listened to the song, and I was like, 'Nope, we can do it. Let's hit every one of those lyrics.' "

No punches are pulled in the clip, in which Em dresses up like Bret Michaels, riffs on Jessica Simpson's voluptuous assets, pops a few shots at Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson, lays into former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, goofs on John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston and Amy Winehouse and ex Blake Civil-Fielder, and takes Kim Kardashian to the wood-chipper.

And, as with "Without Me," Kahn went into the hectic two-day shoot with just a basic sketch of what would happen, happy to let Em do what he does best: improvise. "I'm confident in his improvisational ability to come up with a million things on set, which he always does," Kahn said. After Eminem mapped out which celebs he wanted to take down and 14 different sets were built in a Los Angeles warehouse, including the repurposing of a "Star Trek" bridge that was previously used on a porno shoot for a scene in which Em's mentor Dr. Dre agreed to play Captain Kirk to his protégé's Mr. Spock.

One of the most iconic scenes, however, was shot at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas: a takeoff of the card-counting scene in the Dustin Hoffman/ Tom Cruise savant flick "Rain Man." In a nod to what Kahn said are Em's previously unknown method skills, the director said that when he went up to the rapper's room before the shoot, he found Marshall deeply studying the movie. "He was watching it over and over, saying, 'OK, this is how he stirs his drink,' breaking down Dustin Hoffman's performance," he said. "Marshall is a freak. Everyone thinks he just does stuff, but he really studies it closely, down to how they hold the cards."

Despite a nearly four-year break from solo videos, Kahn felt confident in Em's ability to nail the scenes, especially after watching his performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards. "When Brüno fell on his face, everyone was completely shocked," he said of the thong-only reverse handshake actor Sacha Baron Cohen laid on the rapper at the event. "I knew instantly that he was an amazing actor."

The one scene Kahn was nervous about, however, was a bit where Em had to play the young Elvis and do the dancing jailhouse scene from "Jailhouse Rock." While the rapper's acting skills are sharp, the director said his dancing skills are, well, not as on point. "Marshall is not a dancer. He doesn't dance, he's a rapper," Kahn said. "But he had to learn how to dance like Elvis because we're doing the actual dance from 'Jailhouse Rock.' And he did it. He learned the whole dance in an hour and nailed it."

The Rule For VMA Arrivals: Go Big Or Go Home

Posted: 11 Sep 2009 03:51 AM PDT

NYC-centric vehicles could replace monster trucks and elephants at this year's show, which airs live Sunday at 9 p.m.

In just a few days, the lights on the red carpet will be lit and the 2009 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards will begin welcoming the music world's biggest superstars into the confines of Radio City Music Hall. There, a handful of celebs will no doubt continue a relatively new VMA tradition: the big, flashy red-carpet arrival. Anybody can pull up in a stretch limo, but it takes a real man to arrive to the show on an elephant, as T-Pain did at last year's show.

In fact, 2008 was a watershed year for big arrivals, as Tokio Hotel (who later went on to win the Moonman for Best New Artist) pulled up to the show in a gigantic monster truck that bore the band's logo. Paramore also arrived on four wheels, though their means of conveyance was significantly smaller, as they were in Smart cars. Fall Out Boy turned down the volume even further when they showed up in a horse-drawn carriage. But the most audacious arrival from last year belonged to Young Jeezy, who made his presence known in a motorcade fit for a president. The rapper appeared in a T-shirt that read "My President Is Black" and even had a driver who wore a John McCain mask — further proof that even though he wasn't present, Barack Obama was still the biggest star of the night.

That's not to say that 2008 had the market cornered on interesting arrivals. The VMA sojourns to Miami in 2004 and 2005 allowed a number of stars — including Ricky Martin, Usher and Diddy — to arrive via luxury yacht. The 2005 show had a custom-car theme, which allowed musicians to hit the white carpet riding some of their favorite high-end automobiles: Snoop Dogg was in a 1967 Pontiac Parisienne convertible, Ludacris pulled up in a bouncing 1975 Pontiac Grandville and Green Day had a beat-up '68 Mercury Monterey (not unlike the vehicle that carries the band in the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" video). And some people took the "go big" idea seriously, as 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew took a giant customized bus, and the five dudes from My Chemical Romance arrived in the back of an armored truck ("We just want to be safe, you know?" frontman Gerard Way said then).

The security surrounding the arrivals for this year's show has been tight, though rumor has it that a number of New York-centric vehicles will be put to good use. But which will they be and who will they deliver? You'll have to tune in to the VMA Preshow to find out.

Exclusive: 50 Cent Says He Wasn't Dissing Jay-Z On 'Flight 187'

Plus: J.Cole recalls the first time he got in the studio with Jay-Z, in Mixtape Daily.

It's VMA weekend — so many parties popping off in NYC over the next three days. If you're not in town, get your plane ticket! One of the big presenters at Sunday's Video Music Awards, 50 Cent, told us whether he told off Jay-Z. Then, we have Jay's new find, J.Cole. Cole is originally from North Carolina but moved to Queens, NY, for college and his shot at the music big time. Appearing on Hov's Blueprint 3, on "A Star Is Born," has him off to a tremendous start.

Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground

No (lyrical) shots fired. Everyone wanted to know if 50 Cent was trying to dis Jay-Z on his new mixtape track "Flight 187." The G-Unit mastermind spoke to us exclusively and said there's no beef, just observation.

"It was the glasses," 50 explained about why he compared Hov to sitcom character Steve Urkel. "They saw the glasses. I didn't Photoshop glasses on him. I think Jay is really conscious of his actual moves. He does those things to make a statement in different ways to create clarity that he doesn't have to be the way people want him to be. He can do what he wants. But [I wrote the song] out of the perspective of me mentioning things I thought were interesting."

Fif also noted that he mentioned Britney Spears and even members of his own musical family on the song, but everyone gravitated toward the Hov line because Blueprint 3 has a huge buzz.

"I even wrote, 'Em made me a star and Dre is taking a long time to mix my records. I gotta talk to Jimmy [Iovine] about it.' I wrote about Britney Spears. I said a lot of interesting things on the record, but they focus on Jay because his album is releasing. Of course, with those marketing dollars being spent, he's the focus. The new XXL, there's about 40 pages of Jay-Z on there. That boy is serious when it comes to his [album] layout. ... When it comes time for him to have companies market and promote him as a brand, he does a great job."

Fire Starter: J. Cole

North Carolina rapper J.Cole's life isn't as charmed as you might think. At least not yet, that is.

Yeah, he's the first rapper signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation, a deal that will see him deliver his debut album sometime next year through Columbia Records. And yeah, he appears on Jay-Z's recently released The Blueprint 3, on the not-so-subtle track titled "A Star Is Born."

But when the two MCs collaborated on that track, it was actually the first time Cole, 24, was in the studio with the celebrated superstar and his boss. He got the call that Hov was interested in him rhyming on the track, but Cole mistakenly thought Jay found a track for him; it wasn't until a few days before that it was cleared up. By the time he got to the studio, knowing what he was heading there for, he had a few jitters about working with Jay, and then he looked up to see Beyoncé there. Talk about freshman hazing.

"[Jay-Z] was on the couch at first, right there," Cole told Mixtape Daily about the experience. "It was the first time I was in the studio with Jay. And Beyoncé was there, to make it 10 times worse. Half my thoughts are trying to think of a verse, and then Jay-Z is there watching you write a verse. So I'm soaking it up."

After taking it all in, though, Cole calmly put together his own star-making 16 bars, which resulted in the big homie responding with a resounding, "Oooooooh." It's a response J. Cole's been hearing from Young a lot lately and made famous from Kanye West's "Last Call." The first time Cole said he heard it was when Jay-Z listened to his track "Lights Please," from Cole's second mixtape, The Warm Up. That project was released in May, after he inked with Roc Nation. But when J.Cole stepped in the booth to become a part of the Blueprint trilogy's history, his buzz from the second tape hadn't really set in. Jay, though, was banking on the young upstart.

"I think the title [of the song] and the feature really says more than even what the song is saying," Cole explained. " 'Cause in the song, he's passing the torch in terms of letting me get the last verse. But he's not saying, 'Get 'em, J.' or anything like that. So the title says what the song can't even say. I mean, to list all the names he names, all the greats [in his lyrics]. Even the cats that came and went. And to get on that with no history in the game, I got to add a fresh perspective."

Cole is definitely a part of the fresh wave of new MCs, including Drake, Asher Roth and Wale. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, as Jermaine Cole, the rapper moved to New York to attend St. John's University in Queens and pursue his music career. He grew up around a military town, and his parents and stepfather served in the armed forces. But Cole ended up earning a communications degree instead, even though he wasn't planning on it.

He thought after a couple years, he'd have a deal and had to take a few telemarketing jobs to make do after graduation. He started rapping back when he was 12 in North Carolina, and by 15, he convinced his mom to buy him an ASR beat machine. "That symbolized the end of my hoop dreams," said the avid basketball fan; he's carrying a ball with him on the cover of The Warm Up. Cole then ended up teaching himself how to make beats after a local producer named Nervous Wreck from a group called Bomb Shelter took him under his wing.

In New York, after his sophomore year, he focused on his career with more zeal, and in 2007, he put out his first mixtape: The Come Up. He's been recording serious material ever since. He said he's sitting on about 10 songs that he hopes to either include on his album or hold onto for important projects in the future. One of those songs is "Lights Please," which he's released to DJs, along with "Grown Simba," although he said neither are official singles.

Recently, Cole has been in the studio with No ID, but he hopes to produce the majority of the album himself, he said. He just started working on his debut last week, making the transition from just hitting the studio to going there with a new purpose. He knows there's a lot of expectations riding on the project, particularly because a lot of people will be scrutinizing him more due to the Jay-Z co-sign.

But if that's the first impression people have, he's fine with it — so long as the second impression he makes is that he was worthy of the deal.

"I just want people to comment the talent, if that's the second thing they comment on, then say, 'Oh, the crazy-ass rapper that produces he own sh--,' " Cole said. "Until that overtakes the first thing, being, 'Oh, is that the kid Jay-Z signed?' I got to accept that until I change it."

Though Michael Jackson is gone, the King of Pop will be front and center during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Not only will his sister Janet make a musical tribute to her brother with a special appearance to help open the show, but we can now reveal that viewers will get their first look at the MJ documentary "This Is It" during the live broadcast, when the trailer premieres on MTV.

Drawn from more than 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage and produced with the full support of Jackson's family, "This Is It" chronicles the last three months of the superstar's life as he sought to stage a series of 50 sold-out comeback concerts at London's O2 arena. The documentary shows MJ developing the show and rehearsing a number of songs during his final days. "This Is It" is directed by Kenny Ortega, Jackson's creative partner and the director of the planned O2 stage show. Sony Pictures plans to release the film in theaters for a limited two-week engagement, starting on October 28.

MTV will also exclusively premiere an extended trailer for another hotly anticipated fall movie, "New Moon," the second installment of the "Twilight" vampire franchise. Stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be on hand to debut the footage. "New Moon" co-star Ashley Greene will also be at the show, serving as MTV News' fashion correspondent on the red carpet during the preshow, which airs at 8 p.m. ET.

The VMAs will be hosted for the second year in a row by British comedian Russell Brand. The evening's performers include Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift and Muse. Katy Perry, Ne-Yo, Nelly Furtado, Chace Crawford, Leighton Meester and Miranda Cosgrove are set to present awards.

Mary J. Blige 'Really, Really Sorry' She Can't Participate In Michael Jackson Tribute

Mary J. Blige confirmed on Thursday (September 10) that she will not be participating in Jermaine Jackson's overseas tribute to Michael Jackson.

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul said she was crushed she couldn't participate; however, a contractual obligation in Milan will prevent her from making the trip to Austria, where the tribute show is scheduled to take place. Chris Brown and Akon are also slated to appear, although Brown has yet to confirm. Jermaine Jackson, Natalie Cole and Sister Sledge will perform, it was previously announced.

"There's a lot going on at the time — I'm really, really sorry that I'm not gonna be able to be there," Blige told MTV News. " 'Cause why wouldn't I want to do a tribute to Michael Jackson?"

The singer said MJ's music meant so much to her growing up, saying the Gloved One was the reason she pursued a musical career. She even recalled one of the first times she saw his "Thriller" video.

"When we didn't have anything and we were in our neighborhood, we were running home cutting school to watch the 'Thriller' video on MTV," she said. "He broke barriers that day and every day since then."

Blige said she's looking forward to Janet Jackson's tribute to her late brother this Sunday at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. There are a number of songs Janet could perform, but any selection will do for Blige — she's rooting for Jackson.

"I'm hoping Janet shuts the whole place down," she said.

NEW YORK — Despite the racket of the Video Music Awards stage being assembled around him, Russell Brand still manages to exude an extraordinary level of cool.

This is probably because, as a soon-to-be-two-time VMA host, he's learned to maintain an even keel. Or, because unlike last year, when he took shots at the Jonas Brothers, Madonna, George Bush and others, this time around, he's all about the love.

"There's no targets this year, because I operate from love," he smiled.

And though he's trying to keep it positive, you get the feeling Brand's not afraid to slag anyone off if the situation demands it. Because, well, he admitted it himself.

"I'm not afraid of anything really," said Brand, who also talked about the show on "The View" on Wednesday. "I'm completely fearless."

Which means that on Sunday night, the Jonas Bros, the cast of "New Moon" and anyone within earshot better be ready ... and that includes Radio City Christmas Spectacular mainstay Santa Claus. Seriously!

"I can't top him. No one can top Santa. Except your parents, when they reveal the fictitious nature of him," Brand laughed. "I am a real entity, however, and that is one advantage I have over him ... as opposed to being a marketing device."

Santa: You have been warned ...

When Ellen DeGeneres was announced as the new "American Idol" judge on Wednesday, fans were up in the air and Randy Jackson was pumped — but what did Paula Abdul think about the news?

The original "Idol" judge, who made an abrupt exit from the show last month, had nothing but kind words for her replacement.

" 'American Idol' is a fantastic show that offers an invaluable platform to young talent," Abdul said in a statement Thursday (September 10). "Ellen DeGeneres is wildly funny and talented in her own right. I wish her and the show only the best of luck."

Abdul also took to her Twitter to congratulate DeGeneres on her new gig. "I think Ellen will b a gr8 judge on Idol," she tweeted. "She is wildly funny, talented and I wish her the best of luck!"

Since leaving the show, Abdul has announced a hosting gig for "VH1 Divas" on September 17 and a guest-starring role on Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva." She also has said she's considering a talk show.

DeGeneres called in to Ryan Seacrest's radio show Thursday to address some of the controversy surrounding her addition to the show. The talk-show host and comedian was especially concerned about what her predecessor thought of the move.

"Paula was a huge part of the show, and that's a role that needs to be filled by someone in a totally different way," DeGeneres told Seacrest. "I hope Paula's OK with it. I don't want anyone to think I took Paula's job away."

Taylor Momsen's Pretty Reckless Rock The Streets Of NYC

NEW YORK — A fashion show put on by Teen Vogue set the mood for TV's favorite aspiring fashion designer, Jenny Humphrey — er, Taylor Momsen — to take the stage with her band the Pretty Reckless. But it wasn't just any gig for the "Gossip Girl" star. The rocker put on an alfresco show right on Perry Street in the West Village. The concert was part of New York fashion week's Fashion's Night Out on Thursday (September 10).

A crowd of "Gossip Girl" fans and fashionistas gathered on the tiny street as Momsen took to the stage rocking glittery shorts, garters, tons of necklaces and a white men's shirt. The band got the crowd going playing songs that seemed heavily inspired by all the names Momsen has dropped in the past, like Nirvana and Hole. Her stage presence is definitely an ode to many great rock frontwomen — including Courtney Love, Debbie Harry and Joan Jett — but with a lot of hair bleach thrown in.

The crowd seemed to love the Pretty Reckless' dark slow jam "Zombie." Momsen even busted out a guitar occasionally, playing it during that song's chorus.

"It's awesome. We're outside," she told fans, who were probably thankful the few raindrops during the show didn't turn into a full-blown storm.

Momsen and company played a raucous set, blaring their songs for the entire West Village to hear their five-song, 20-minute show. The crowd might not have been too familiar with the Pretty Reckless' music but definitely seemed to appreciate Momsen getting her rock star on.

"The show was awesome," Momsen told MTV News after the show. "It was really cool. It was Fashion's Night Out, and it was cool. It was short and sweet, and it's awesome being outside. The weather is my favorite temperature. It was invigorating."

Asher Roth Says Lady Gaga Can Have Best New Artist VMA

In 2008, rock band Tokio Hotel beat out a quartet of pop stars — Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Swift — to nab a Best New Artist win at the MTV Video Music Awards. This year the category pits nine-time nominee Lady Gaga against 3OH!3, Drake, Kid Cudi and Asher Roth and, according to one of them, the contest is already over before the September 13 show has begun.

"I think Gaga's gonna take it," Roth told MTV News. "She's been killing it for however long now, so she can go ahead and have it. I'm not gonna put up a big fight."

Instead of a fight, he's putting forth a new look: Roth has spent the last two weeks sprouting a blondish, '70s-style moustache that would not be out of place in an adult film. By the rapper's reasoning, if he can't match Gaga and Beyoncé with a glitzy fashion choice, he might as well rock some creative facial hair.

"The moustache was European-inspired. It was supposed to last a day, but it's lasted 12!" he said, joking that it actually took six months for the baby-faced artist to grow the meager 'stache. "I'm getting some bad backlash from my inner squad, my cabinet."

Undeterred, Roth went on to suggest he might go all-in with the Euro-motivated fashion decisions and dress up like the namesake of Frenchman Alexandre Dumas' famous 19th-century adventure novel — cape, frilly blouse and all.

"You might see me as the Count of Monte Cristo at the MTV Video Music Awards!" Roth declared.
