Blueprint 3 hasn't even hit stores yet (it did hit MTV's The Leak, though), and Jay-Z told us he's already working on his next album, which will be his most eclectic piece ever.

"I've always said I believe in good music and bad music. ... I like music. The second Blueprint, the reason it was all over the place is because I like music so much. You have tracks with Lenny Kravitz then Sean Paul. Dr. Dre. It's all over the place because of my taste in music. I like music.

"My next album, which I'm working on now -- that's exclusive, no one knows that -- is gonna be the album that really ... it's not gonna be a #1 album. That's where I'm at right now. I wanna make the most experimental album I ever made. But let's not deal with that now; I want to deal with The Blueprint 3."

Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground

Bun B is working on his next solo album, expanding his record company and, yes, is in talks for a major mixtape. The underground CD, if it comes to fruition, will be a whole project co-starring Young Jeezy.

Bun said both members of UGK were cool with Jeezy prior to Pimp C's death despite Pimp and Young having a public falling-out.

"Young and I have had the opportunity to sit down and talk about all the great things we've been through. ... We still got a lot of love for each other," Bun said. "Now we're in a position to get back making great music together like we used to.

"We're going to take the tape back to the Streets Is Talking days when he was hungry, trying to get in the game. When I was hungry trying to tear up the game with Pimp still in prison and keep the UGK name out there heavily. Don't be surprised if you have a II Trill and CTE project in the stocking this holiday season. Hopefully, it will open the doors for a lot of other brothers to make a movement. He's still got his CTE crew he has to put out music with. I still got my obligations. At some point before the year is out, we're gonna try to do the mixtape this year. I guess now that I've said it, we gotta do it."

Bun is also expanding his II Trill Entertainment label in the very near future with more mixtapes.

"The mixtape we're getting ready to do is a partnership with Big Kap with Paper Chase entertainment. It's the beginning of II Trill West, and the tape is called American Made: Article 1. We're pushing new artists from the West Coast. The Gutta Boy Family is the first group."

When Bun and Kap talked, they said worst-case scenario, the Texas legend would lend a co-sign. Best case, he would be fully involved.

Bun also has a cat out of Dallas named Young J.R., then there's the launch of II Trill East with Manhood Entertainment. First up for that faction? Uncle Murda.

"The talent is there, the opportunity is there. I'm associating myself with artists I feel who have great talent."

Bun is gearing up for his solo LP. He said he just wants to take time and evaluate.

DJ AM was laid to rest in a private ceremony Wednesday (September 2) in Los Angeles, according to UsMagazine.com.

Guests, including AM's girlfriend Hayley Wood and friend/ collaborator Travis Barker, former fiancee Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte's Joel and Benji Madden, gathered at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles at around 3 p.m. local time for the funeral service, according to the report. AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) was found by police in his New York apartment on Friday, dead from an apparent drug overdose, although initial autopsy results were inconclusive.

The service took place in the mortuary and moved outside at approximately 4 p.m., according to the report. Barker — who had been on tour with Blink-182 but postponed three shows in the wake of AM's death — reportedly paid his respects and threw dirt on the coffin. He and Wood reportedly hugged at one point, and walked side by side with AM's family and friends.

AM will also be remembered by family and friends in a private memorial service scheduled for Thursday at the Hollywood Palladium, the same venue where he performed with Jay-Z in October of last year, a month after he and Travis Barker survived a fiery plane crash in South Carolina.

The Palladium memorial is being described as "a gathering to celebrate the life of our friend Adam Goldstein," and will reportedly pay tribute to his struggle with addiction, with a format that will be in the style of an open 12-step meeting.

Chris Brown Tells Larry King: 'I Made A Mistake'

The singer, surrounded by his mother and lawyer, tells the talk-show host he has to 'change and become a better person.'

Chris Brown was evasive at times during his interview with CNN's Larry King on Wednesday, his first televised comments since his February altercation with Rihanna. But the singer expressed his remorse throughout, calling the ordeal "possibly" the worse period of his young life.

Brown, clad in a sweater and bow tie, sat across from King clasping his hands as he was flanked by his mother, Joyce Hawkins, and his attorney, Mark Geragos. The "Forever" star kept a stern face as he answered King's questions. The talk-show host pressed Brown a number of times on key questions, such as what happened between him and Rihanna in his rented Lamborghini, what transpired during the onetime couple's conversation immediately after and what the young lovers discussed during their Miami retreat shortly after the incident.

Each time Brown politely stonewalled King. The singer said it was unfair to compromise his and Rihanna's privacy to go into detail regarding those moments. "I don't want to go into that," Brown responded. "I'm sorry."

Brown's mother teared up at different points during the hour-long sitdown. She also called the aftermath of the incident the most painful period of her life.

"Seeing him go through the pain and dealing with the media, it's been very hard," she told King.

Brown repeatedly described his and Rihanna's relationship as upbeat. He shot down rumors of previous incidents of violence between the two. When King brought up the prior incidents that were unearthed in Brown's probation report — an argument overseas and an incident in Barbados where Brown allegedly broke a car window after a fight — the singer refuted any suggestion that the occurrences were evidence of previous abuse.

"I'm not aware of those instances," he explained. "Especially of that nature ... as a couple we have had arguments, but nothing to this point."

Brown said it's been months since he last talked to Rihanna, who he met when he was 15 and dated for several years. He noted the stay-away order was imposed prior to his sentencing and as a result he has had no contact with his former girlfriend. Although the entertainers have been in close quarters since they parted ways in Miami, Brown said they are no longer a couple but remain friends, a status he thinks they can ensure moving forward.

"I'm pretty sure we can always be friends," Brown told King. "I'm not sure about our relationship, but we ended as friends."

Brown admitted he "definitely" still loves Rihanna and even revealed he could see a situation where the two could potentially be married in the future. But Brown emphasized he's still young and not interested in dating at the moment.

King asked the 20-year-old star if he would be hurt if Rihanna began dating someone new.

"I'd definitely be affected by it," Brown answered. "But at the end of the day, we aren't together. If she's happy, I'm cool."

Brown said his age shouldn't be used as an excuse for his actions. He urged that there are still a number of life lessons he must continue to learn and hopefully he can discover more about himself through counseling. While Rihanna hasn't spoken much since the attack, Brown told King she never asked him why he turned to violence against her and he believes he's now turning a corner in his life.

"I made a mistake and that's just something I have to live up to and own up to," Brown said. "And change and become a better person."

Rick Ross, Bun B Remember DJ AM's Impact On Hip-Hop

'If God wanted a good DJ, he got the right one,' says Skillz of production duo Play-N-Skillz.

DJ AM will reportedly be buried on Wednesday (September 2), but the imprint he left on hip-hop won't soon be forgotten.

"Sometimes, you gotta just look in the mirror and reflect and take control of yourself first and foremost," Rick Ross said of the late DJ. "A lot of time, we're quick to speak on other's situations and what's going on. But we gotta reflect and grasp what's happening. When I hear situations like DJ AM, its very unfortunate. I'm one of the dudes that's cool with Travis Barker. They went through their situation [with the South Carolina plane crash]. I talked to Travis a short time after that. When AM made his recovery, it was at a club in L.A. I came out, kicked it, bought some T-shirts, rocked the mic. A lot of times, I just really reflect, man. These situations come and go so fast, you gotta sit back and reflect. I try to cherish the moments we have."

"I didn't know him personally, but his reputation precedes him well," Bun B said. "I have been to a lot of corporate functions, and whoever is DJing, whether it be a Clinton Sparks or a Whoo Kid or a DJ Skribble or a Clue or Enuff, whoever was doing these parties, people would talk about AM. 'AM really knows how to rock these crowds.' He knew how to get one crowd of people into it without losing the other crowd of people. He was renowned for that."

Bun said he feels especially bad for AM's close friend Travis Barker.

"Travis is a good friend of mine," Bun said. "I was praying for him to be strong. He's on tour [with Blink-182]. I know he has a show to do, and that would not be easy for him. I was with DJ Premier in New York [the night before AM died], the night Premier talked to him. As soon as I heard about it, I called Primo and said, 'Wow, that's crazy.' Him and Primo was about to drop these shoes at the Magic [fashion] convention. AM is not just known in the DJ community; he's known in the sneaker community as a person with very good taste, a real strong collection and a real keen eye. It's tragic more than anything. We pray for his family, for his soul and pray for us. We lost somebody. It's gonna be real hard to replace DJ AM."

Producers Play-N-Skillz said AM's talent was immeasurable.

"When you saw him DJ, you literally wanted to go home and practice all day and every day," Play said of his friend's talent.

"Or even give up," Skillz added. "He was hands down the best DJ live we've ever seen. I'm sure every other DJ would say the same. It was definitely a tragedy. We've lost a lot of great ones the last couple of years. If God wanted a good DJ, he got the right one."

Does Wale Have Enough Going On To Be One Of The Hottest MCs?

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 04:03 AM PDT

'I absolutely don't think it's all about the music,' the rapper says of what it takes to be one of the Hottest MCs in the Game.
By Shaheem Reid

He's on a "World Tour," hustling through each and every ghetto with a mic in his hand — but is that mic hot enough to get him a spot on the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust's Hottest MCs list? Of course it is, according to Wale.

"I think I am," the MC said. "But who am I to say what a round table says? If I begin to plead my case, I don't think I deserve it."

Wale argues that his placement on the list shouldn't solely be about the music he puts out.

"I absolutely don't think it's all about the music. What else does the artist have going on? Radio spins and video spins have a lot to do with it. Consistency. Not having any moments where it's, like, [a lull] ... if I am top-10 good. If not, we gonna keep working to get there."

Does Wale have enough going on to make it on the list? He has charisma and respect from his core fanbase and peers in and out of rap.

"He's very witty when he writes," Kid Cudi recently said. "Sometimes he may not be so straightforward when he writes. I think he does that on purpose."

Coming off the heels of "Chillin" with Lady Gaga, Wale — dubbed "the greatest new rapper since Jay-Z" by GQ in their June issue — just dropped his latest single, "World Tour," featuring Jazmine Sullivan. He also has "Pretty Girls" with Gucci Mane making its way through the streets and his debut Attention Deficit due this Fall. Wale will also be the house act for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, airing September 13.

Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.

Pitbull's Rise To Fame Has Been 'An Education'

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 07:05 AM PDT

'Everything that's happened to me ... it's definitely a blessing,' the rapper says.

Pitbull
Photo: MTV News

Pitbull has come a long way from battling MCs in the back alleys of Miami. After a decade in the music game, Pit is a bigger star than he's ever been. His "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" is currently a top-20 single and "Hotel Room Service" is #10 in the country. His album Rebelution just arrived in stores and, regardless of the sales tally next week, Pit has evolved into an international star.

"As far as my career goes ... when this tsunami that's about to come in [arrives], we're prepared for it," he said about his new level of fame. "All this has been an experiment, an education. A lot of people experience fame, money or fortune and they're not prepared for it. It is something that's a drug when they're not prepared for it. So everything that happened to me, the days with Luke, what happened with TVT Records, what we went through with TVT and how we fought our way out of that situation now to be business partners with one of the biggest record companies in the world — it's definitely a blessing. If you continue to work hard, let that be the fuel to your fire. We've survived."

Pit says his international appeal is due to picking up inspiration from his travels around the world. But when he tests his material out at home, he knows what his smashes are going to be.

"Simplicity is the key to success," he explained. "My biggest A&Rs are my kids. If I see my kids singing it, I say, 'Uh oh, it's a problem.'"

DJ AM's Memorial Format: What Is The 12-Step Program?

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 02:40 AM PDT

DJ AM's memorial on Thursday will use aspects of the program designed to help addicts; but what does it consist of?
By Gil Kaufman

On Thursday, DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein) will be remembered at a private ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles that will use aspects of the 12-step program in paying tribute to him. The choice of structuring the memorial for the popular celebrity DJ, 36, who died of a suspected overdose on Friday in his New York apartment is fitting, given AM's 11 years of sobriety following a struggle with drugs in his early 20s and his commitment to helping others overcome their addictions through efforts such as his recently wrapped MTV show "Gone Too Far."

But what is a 12-step program and how does it help addicts get back on the right track? "Alcoholism and addiction is chronic, progressive and fatal if untreated," explained Robert Lindsey, president and CEO of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. "One of the things we know is that there are millions of individuals in recovery and, just like those in recovery from chronic illnesses like heart disease and cancer, some will die from those illnesses because they relapse. And that is exactly what happened here." (Lindsey has no firsthand knowledge of the AM case, but was speaking about it based on news accounts.)

The 12 steps, which were developed nearly 80 years ago by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, are a guideline for addicts to first stop using, admit their addictions and then commit to making the changes in their life that will keep them drug and alcohol free. "Whether you're a doctor, lawyer, painter or unemployed, at a meeting you're all the same and you're all there for the same purpose," Lindsey said of the many different meetings for people suffering addictions to sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling or other problems. "The reality is that without that first step — admitting you are powerless over alcohol or other drugs — without that, nothing else can happen."

Lindsey said that with 22 million people over the age of 12 addicted to alcohol or drugs in this country, representing 9 percent of the U.S. population, the majority who have managed long-term recovery have done it through participation in an Alcoholics Anonymous-type program where the 12 steps are a key part of the process.

The standard 12 steps are:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His Will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Like Alcoholics Anonymous gatherings, the DJ AM memorial will stress anonymity — organizers have requested that what is said and shared there not leave the room, with press barred from attending the event and attendees asked not to bring cameras, cell phones or recording devices.

"To a certain extent, the steps are literally a progressive attempt to work on different parts of changing your life," Lindsey said. "And it's about progress, not perfection ... you can use them to mark that progress."

A History Of The MTV Video Music Awards In New York City

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 02:00 AM PDT

MTV's landmark show has a long and storied history with the city and returns to home turf on September 13.
By Eric Ditzian

It all started in New York in 1984. Ronald Reagan was president. Times Square was a neon-shrouded dump. And MTV invaded Radio City Music Hall for the first ever Video Music Awards. Madonna took the stage in a lacy wedding gown to sing about virginity, Michael Jackson nabbed three Moonmen for "Thriller" and, well, pop culture was never the same again.

With the 2009 show returning to Radio City on September 13 at 9 p.m., we had to take a look back at the many, many ways — from Madonna making out with Britney Spears to hundreds of Slim Shady clones helping Eminem out with his live act — that the VMAs have rocked New York.

After the Cars won the inaugural Video of the Year award for "You Might Think," the VMAs stayed New York-bound for just one more year. Hosted by Eddie Murphy, the '85 show featured performances by Sting, Pat Benatar and the Eurythmics. But the night's sentimental favorite was USA for Africa, the all-star charity ensemble including MJ, Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen that took home two trophies for their single, "We Are the World."

By the next year, MTV's baby was ready to stretch its legs, expanding from a purely NYC-based show to one broadcasting live from Manhattan, Los Angeles, London, Miami and, oddly, New Haven, Connecticut. For the next seven years, the VMAs stayed on the West Coast, not returning to their Radio City roots until 1994.

The '94 show was an unforgettable one from the very start. Months after they were married, Michael Jackson and wife Lisa Marie Presley took the stage as MJ said, "And just think, nobody thought this would last," before the two awkwardly played kissy-face in front of the shocked audience. Later, a disguised Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys stormed the stage to proclaim that Spike Jonze should have won for Best Director for "Sabotage" and screamed, "This is an outrage!"

The performances were unforgettable too, including the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, the Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Boyz II Men and Snoop Dogg.

Things went so well in New York, the VMAs decided to stick around for the next three years. Weezer and TLC were the big winners in '95, each taking home four Moonmen and, instead of an awkward kiss with his wife, Jackson rocked out a medley of classic tunes like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It." The night's most outrageous moment actually took place outside the venue, as a loopy Courtney Love interrupted Kurt Loder's post-show interview with Madonna by throwing the contents of her purse at her. Love also confronted Tabitha Soren and fell off a chair.

Dennis Miller returned as host in '96, and the show stayed put at Radio City. Oasis feuded onstage, as did Van Halen, but the band that dominated the evening was the Smashing Pumpkins, with a total of five wins.

By '97, Chris Rock had taken over for fellow "SNL" alum Miller. In what would become a legendary acceptance speech, Fiona Apple unleashed an expletive-laced tirade and Rock issued her a swift verbal takedown. Performances that year included Puff Daddy's tribute to Biggie Smalls, as well as U2, Beck, Bruce Springsteen and the Spice Girls.

After venturing west again, the show returned to New York for a new venue: the Metropolitan Opera House. Diana Ross fondled Lil' Kim, Kid Rock played with Aerosmith and Run-DMC, and 'NSYNC sang alongside Britney Spears.

Spears truly made her VMA presence known the next year at Radio City, when the then 18-year-old tore off her tuxedo mid-performance and had everyone thinking for a second she was actually naked, instead of, alas, in a flesh-colored outfit. Lest the ladies steal the night, Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford climbed up a fake palm tree onstage and refused to move, despite the crowd's vociferous chant of "Jump!"

The VMAs stayed in New York for the next three years, and 2001's Jamie Foxx-hosted event saw Brit wear a giant snake around her neck during "I'm a Slave 4 U," in addition to performances by Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule and Linkin Park. Jimmy Fallon took over emcee duties the following year, overseeing a show that had Triumph the Insult Comic Dog picking a fight with Eminem, a stellar solo performance from Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson mistakenly accepting the imaginary Artist of the Millennium award.

The year of The Kiss followed: Madonna, Britney and Christina Aguilera exchanging smooches during a medley of Madge's tunes. Perhaps the action was getting a little too hot for the city, as the VMAs headed south to Miami for two years.

The show returned to NYC in 2006, and if the action inside Radio City that year — Jack Black as host, Lil' Kim in a prison jumpsuit, killer performances by JT, T.I. and others — was any example, the 2009 Radio City show on September 13 is not to be missed.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Additional celebrity presenters and performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.

Whitney Port Takes On New Job, New Guy, New Season Of 'The City'

Trailer for season two shows Whit working for Kelly Cutrone, Olivia working for Elle.
By Jocelyn Vena

In the new season of "The City," set to return on September 29, Whitney Port faces a whole new set of challenges in the Big Apple. In the trailer for season two, we see that Port will have to learn to balance a new job, new co-workers and her old boss, while still pursuing her dream of being a fashion designer and maintaining a personal life.

Port has left the confines of Diane Von Furstenberg behind to work for Kelly Cutrone at PR house People's Revolution. Cutrone has offered her the job that would just take up "five, six hours a day" while she tries to get her fashion line off the ground. And in a gutsy move Whitney takes her designs to Cutrone to see if she has what it takes to be one of her clients too.

But all is not sunshine and roses for the ambitious designer and her boss. In the trailer some friction arises, as Port defends herself to Cutrone, and Cutrone is seen telling her, "I just hope that everything you do for all your friends — that they treat you as nice as you treat them."

Meanwhile, Port is also trying to move on from former flame Jay Lyon with a new guy named Freddy.

Whitney's former DVF arch nemesis Olivia Palermo also takes a new job at Elle magazine. But if fans know Olivia, they know that wherever she works, she's bound to butt heads. "I don't quit," she tells an Elle co-worker, and it sounds like a threat.

Watch the "The City" season premiere on Tuesday, September 29, at 10:30 p.m., right after the season premiere of "The Hills."
